or most gymnasts the story is pretty much the same-training in the gym four hours per day, four to six days per week; eating on the run, and competing weekends in different cities. The story for Madison Torok is somewhat different.

Madison was born with a birth defect called Arthrogryphrosis Multiplex. In most children, this birth defect is crippling with possible surgeries involved. For Madison, the right side of her body was affected, most severely in her right foot and hand. Madison's mom Lisa said, "When Madison was a baby we were told by the doctors that she would probably never run and even walking would be somewhat clumsy for her. Her foot and leg were casted at birth and surgery was performed in her first year to correct her foot. She couldn't bend her arms until the age of 4." To this day, Madison still struggles to grasp with her right hand. She has minimal fine motor skills and bending her arm to bring her right hand to her mouth to do the simple task of biting a cookie is still difficult for her to do. Madison started gymnastics at age 5 as a means to stretch and condition her body and develop her motor skills. It was through this training that it was discovered Madison not only loved being in the gym but she was also very flexible and eager to learn. Lisa said, "I was a high school gymnast and knew that the sport has so many benefits. 1 knew that conditioning and stretching could help her body. She was so small and frail and 1 thought gymnastics could help her muscles develop." With the help of Peter (shown at right) and Tania Gueorguiev (shown above) of Euro Stars Gymnastics in Plymouth, Mich. Madison's dream to actually become a gymnast came true. The coaches saw the passion and determination in Madison and decided to dedicate their time and knowledge to help her achieve her goal. It took many hours of practice and conditioning before Madison finally made it to Level 4 as a pre-team gymnast. At that level she was able to participate in "Fun Meets" and it was only the beginning! Peter said, "Madison's story is just amazing. Our gym philosophy is that all children have a place in our program and

we wanted to give her an opportunity. Our expectations for Madison were to improve her disabilities, but we never dreamed she would be a member of our competitive team. We treated her the same as the other kids in our gym and she continued to improve." In September of 2004 Madison became a member of the Euro Stars Level 5 team. Madison's right hand and her arm strength are her biggest obstacles physically, but her setbacks have not discouraged her. Madison just finished her first competitive year as a Level 5 and placed fifth on floor and 13th on vault at State Meet in the gold level. She also started the season scoring 5's on bars but managed an 8.00 at State Meet despite her difficulties of even grasping the bar!

With the help of some very caring coaches and the determination of one child, anything is possible even when the odds are against you!

"We felt like we wanted to go out on top," said Arthur. "I wanted to focus on my professional life and it was tough to just train and compete. It was time to retire." Arthur and Shenea may have retired from national and international competition but they haven't stopped performing. Arthur said, "My coach Youri Vorobyev and I formed Realis, a performing company where we do acrobatic shows. Shenea is also a part of the show. We're still training twice a day. The u.s. trio of Danielle Heider, Samantha Schabow and Jennifer daSilva, 2004 World bronze medalists and National Champions, have also retired from competition and are in our show, based out of Riverside, Calif." Alicia Sacrarnone continued her domination of the Vault apparatus, as she added another gold to her collection winning in finals at the Paris Berry World Cup, May 17-22. Sacrarnone easily topped Lais Souza of Brazil and Aagje Vanwalleghem of Belgium. This marks Sacrarnone's third World Cup vaulting victory this season as she was also crowned champion at the American Cup in February and at the Belgium event in April. She also added a sixth place finish on Floor scoring 8.525. The U.S. men tallied a pair of fifth place finishes in event finals with Houston Gymnastics Academy's Sean Townsend competing on Parallel Bars with 8.975 and University of Minnesota's Guillermo Alvarez on Floor scoring 9.025. Rings specialist Eric La Morte narrowly missed out on making finals in his signature event, despite putting up a strong 9.525. National Gymnastics Day, August 6, 2005, is rapidly approaching and hopefully you have been thinking about how your club is going to celebrate this special day. For the past six years, National Gymnastics Day has shown the benefits that the sport of gymnastics has to offer and has helped a good cause in the process. In 2004, clubs participating in National Gymnastics Day raised over $129,000 for the Children's Miracle Network (CMN) through Cartwheel-A-thons and other fundraisers, and USA Gymnastics would like to see this same success in 2005! Nationwide, almost 80,000 gymnasts and other supporters participate in National Gymnastics Day and have raised a total of $379,000 for CMN. lhrough fundraisers and other open-house events, clubs have also been able to show how beneficial gymnastics is for children. Supporting the sport and helping the Children's Miracle Network have proved to be a win-win situation for all those involved. Proclamations from all 50 states, the United States Olympic Committee and the International Gymnastics Federation, as well as testimonials and endorsements from celebrities, are being secured to help show the importance of the day, but USA Gymnastics still needs your help. If you have not already made plans for National Gymnastics Day, we encourage you to do so quickly. Through a Cartwheel-Athons or other fund raisers, your club can help with the continued success of NGD. After planning your events, we encourage you to post them on the USA Gymnastics website. So far, almost 150 clu bs have posted plans on the website.

wo-time National Champion and Olympian Kristen Maloney, 24, recently graduated from UCLA with a degree in psychology, a long list of gymnastics accomplishments, and many great memories. UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field, summed it up best, "Kristen accomplished so much in her career, on a national, international and collegiate level, but what she will always be remembered for is her heart and her determination. She truly has the heart of a champion. I've been saying all year that she is a living legend in the sport of gymnastics, and I am thrilled that she is being recognized as such." USA Gymnastics Vice President of Programs Kathy Kelly said, "Despite Kristen's busy schedule she finds time to volunteer at USA Gymnastics as an athlete representative on the board of directors. Throughout her career as an elite and collegiate gymnast she has been an inspiration to all athletes for her true grit and determination." Senior All-American NCAA vault and beam champion, Kristen was named the nation's top collegiate female gymnast, an honor based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program. She was also a nominee for the Honda Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate female athlete. A native of Pen Argyl, Pa ., Maloney was a member of the 2000 U.S.

Olympic team. She won back-to-back U.S. all-around titles in 1998 and 1999. A nine-time All-American, she spent the final 10 weeks of the 2005 season as the nation's top-ranked all-around gymnast and placed second in the all-around competition at the NCAA Championships despite competing with a sprained ankle. She also won the vault and beam titles. When asked what it's like to compete in collegiate competition Kristen said, "Collegiate gymnastics is all about the team. Everything is focused on the team and the only time you compete for yourself is at NCAA Championships during event finals. There is much camaraderie and friendships among the team members, it makes competing so much fun." Kristen still enjoys watching elite gymnastics and tries to stay up on what's happening in the elite ranks. "r get occasional updates from my former coaches Bill and Donna Strauss from Parkettes," said Kristen. ''I'd like to go to the Visa Championships this August in Indianapolis if I can work it into my schedule." Kristen is working in San Diego, Calif., at Sea World in a show called Riptide. ''I'm dancing and doing tumble track in the show. The show runs late May through Labor Day. We do two shows a night, five nights a week."
