Dear Students,

Time has gone by so quickly! Ok, maybe not the first few weeks, but after that it has flown, and we’re almost at the end of this adventure already

We are so proud of all you have accomplished during these few months! We’ve seen you engage in the local traditions and life by cooking, surfing, hiking, picking apples, learning about the old tradition of candle making, teaching local kids English, tutoring for local families, as well as traveling to so many places and building such meaningful relationships.

We have seen you struggle and conquer all challenges We have seen you evolve, develop new abilities and skills, learn a new language (or two!) and become comfortable outside your comfort zone. You have done excellent work at all of it! In fact, we are sure you will carry all this learning and experience with you, and that it will make you a stronger, more resourceful, more prepared person for the challenges ahead.

I do not mention all of this lightly Some of you may not know, but this has been my first semester as Resident Director at USAC San Sebastian. You have been the first group I welcomed in my new role and each of you have been special for me in one way or another. I have enormously enjoyed meeting each of you and I wish nothing but the best to each of you in every challenge and project ahead

I want to take this opportunity to thank Yessenia and Xabi, who have worked so hard in creating this yearbook, as well as everyone who has contributed their time, photographic talent and/or words to creating such great memories for all of us. A very special thanks goes to Natalia Errazkin and Mari Mar Olano, who have directed this project. Without the enthusiasm, dedication and contribution from every single one of you, we wouldn’t have been able to build this beautiful memento of your semester in Donostia.

It’s truly been a pleasure walking this path with you Now that you have built a home in San Sebastian, we hope you remember us and come visit us in the future again.

From the USAC program in San Sebastian we hope that studying abroad has become one of the most enriching experiences for our students An opportunity that we trust has marked a before and after not only in their lives and emotions but also in their academic and professional profile.

Every semester we strive for USAC students to develop all their personal and professional skills and competencies and, with that in mind, we launched the T.A.B.C. (Teaching Assistant in the Basque Country) program almost fifteen years ago, which offers our students the opportunity to work as English conversation assistants at local schools.

Seven USAC students have participated in the T.A.B.C. program during the fall semester: Justinian BirchallRowan ("Hodei"), Haven Casillas, Renée Katz, Yessenia Riveros-Villar, Emily Schlundt, Greta Shawver and Rachel Simoes.

All of them have successfully overcome a double challenge: on one hand, to promote and improve oral proficiency of English in the classroom (in primary and secondary education); and, on the other hand, to strongly face the difficulties of working in a completely different educational environment, far from their comfort zone

We are sure that they have managed to motivate their students and increased their curiosity for learning English, becoming authentic "American Cultural Ambassadors" themselves, and bringing North American culture closer to their students. The results are clear: they’ve succeeded at expanding their students’ motivation and interest in learning other languages and cultures. Every effort has its reward: the gratification of a job well done And, Justinian, Haven, Renée, Yessenia, Emily, Greta and Rachel, can be really proud of what they have accomplished. Congratulations and THANK YOU all very much!

On top of that, I would like to thank Yessenia Riveros-Villar and Xabier Irujo Urdiroz as well, who have collaborated in the creation of the YEARBOOK throughout this semester. The Internships and Volunteer Opportunities are another excellent option for USAC students to open up their minds, interacting with locals and becoming familiar with a new cultural environment, enhancing the overall experience of studying abroad

We are sure that Yessenia and Xabi have improved their communication skills and increased their network of contacts and friendships. Their work in the Yearbook has also helped them to learn to better manage their time and face new challenges both professionally and personally, as well as to value, appreciate and celebrate the local history and traditions of the Basque Country

Again, THANK YOU for your hard work and congratulations It’s been a real pleasure working with all of you You all have discovered new strengths and skills, and are now ready to conquer new challenges and solve new problems.

Although I was sent to Colegios La Asunción and Aldapeta to teach, I think I ended up learning just as much as my students did! In the experience, I've gained a much wider perspective of teaching as a whole as well as how much time, work, and effort the job requires in order to be done well I think this opportunity also gave me a much closer view of Euskal Herria as I taught English to so many locals and practiced Euskara with the other teachers- I wouldn't have passed up this chance for anything! I am also very glad to say that I was "the cool teacher" for this semester!!

The opportunity to go into schools and teach English to local students was one that I could not pass up It seemed like a great way to get to know the community of San Sebastian, and it was! Though challenging at times, I think I have grown a lot, and I now have experience working in a different country I feel grateful that I was able to meet so many local students and teachers through this wonderful immersion opportunity.

Surfing here has been amazing. The waves were way better than I expected and surfing with friends was always so fun.

When I think about having a good time with my friends in Donostia, this is the class and location where most of those memories take place. Basque Cuisine is an incredible time, not just to learn recipes or Basque culture, but to apply what you learn in the most practical way, to enjoy an evening with your best friends, and to make the most out of your time here in such a way that you can bring a little of Donostia back home with you! I cannot count the fun times, conversations, and lessons I had in this class!!

No sabía nada de gastronomía vasca antes de venir a San Sebastián Para mí ha sido un gran descubrimiento conocer texturas, sabores y mezclas que no había probado nunca. Me encanta sentirme como una cocinera profesional cuando voy a esta clase Además de aprender y practicar platos diferentes, me gusta cuando nos sentamos en la mesa y disfrutamos de la cena que hemos preparado Hablamos entre nosotros, nos reímos y saboreamos los diferentes platos. Son momentos especiales en los que me siento como si estuviera en una cena familiar.

INFINIDAD DE PROPUESTAS QUE HICIERON QUE CADA DÍA FUERA UNA EXPERIENCIA DIFERENTE, SABOREANDO CON DELEITE CADA INSTANTE Y DEJÁNDOSE LLEVAR POR LOS CINCO SENTIDOS.

Cada miércoles salgo de mi casa en Gros y camino hasta la sociedad gastronómica donde me reúno con mis amigos y compañeros de USAC. Allí, nos esperan los profesores de clase de cocina y cada día nos enseñan las técnicas para preparar nuevos platos. Los cocinamos y después viene el momento que más estamos esperando: sentarnos en la mesa todos juntos Esos días de clase, sé que voy a comer como un rey, por eso, me salto el almuerzo para tener más apetito

He podido degustar pescados, postres y comidas muy diferentes. Entre todas, mis favoritas son: el txitxarro al horno, la sopa de ajo y por supuesto las torrijas. ¡Deliciosas!

Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a una clase de cocina y fue fantástico. Los cocineros que enseñaban a preparar los platos eran muy amables y estaba claro que conocían perfectamente su profesión. Explicaban las recetas de forma muy clara y sencilla para que todos las comprendieran

El día que yo fui, comimos pimientos rellenos de bacalao ¡Estaban deliciosos! También preparamos una cazuela de arroz con leche para postre. Le pusimos canela encima.

Tengo que señalar que se crea un ambiente muy agradable en esta clase y además pude practicar español con el resto de personas que coincidieron conmigo.

SOPA DE AJO

Es una sopa de aprovechamiento indicada para los días fríos e invernales.

INGREDIENTES:

Agua o caldo, ajo, huevos, pan duro, aceite de oliva, sal y pimentón dulce

PREPARACIÓN:

En primer lugar, picamos los ajos. Utilizaremos un diente de ajo por cada comensal. En segundo lugar, pondremos una olla con aceite de oliva y rehogaremos los ajos Cuando los ajos están dorados los apartamos de la olla A continuación doramos el pan duro que hemos cortado en rebanadas Lo doramos bien y añadimos el pimentón dulce Después añadimos el caldo o agua Cubrimos bien, añadimos los ajos apartados Esto lo dejamos que hierva 10 min. A continuación incorporamos los huevos. Podemos dejarlos enteros o removerlos con una cuchara para que se mezcle bien con la sopa y quede forma de hilo. Dejamos que se cuezan dos minutos más y servimos bien caliente

INGREDIENTS:

Water or broth, garlic, eggs, stale bread, olive, oil, salt and sweet paprika.

PREPARATION: First, we chop the garlic. Use a clove of garlic for each person. Secondly, we will put a pot with olive oil and sauté the garlic. When the garlic is golden we separate them from the pot. Then we brown the hard bread that we have cut into slices We brown it well, and add the sweet paprika Then we add the broth or water Cover well, add the garlic apart We let this boil for 10 min Next, we incorporate the eggs We can leave it whole or move it with a spoon so that it mixes well with the soup and is shaped like a thread We let them cook two more minutes and serve hot.

TORRIJAS

Ingredientes:

•1 litro de leche.

•200 gramos de azúcar.

•1 barra de pan.

•1 palo de canela.

•1 cucharada de canela en polvo.

•3 huevos.

•La piel de un limón.

•Aceite de oliva extra virgen.

Preparación:

UNA MIRADA CREATIVA QUE LES PERMITIÓ EXPLORAR NUEVAS INQUIETUDES.

La ocasión que se me brindó para ir a esta clase fue genial. Me divertí mucho, aprendí a cocinar algunos platos que no conocía y pude hablar en español con los cocineros Me encantó comer de postre torrijas. Es un plato que se hace con una rebanada de pan y se empapa en leche

Ha sido un honor y un lujo aprender recetas típicas del lugar en el que estoy viviendo, de la mano de cocineros conocidos en San Sebastián

Mi receta favorita ha sido la sopa de ajo, porque es un plato muy sencillo que se elabora con pocos ingredientes y tiene un sabor que te sorprende.

¡Me ha encantado la clase, ha sido muy especial para mí!

Se coloca la leche en una cazuela, la piel de limón, el palo de canela y el azúcar, dejando hervir durante unos minutos. Posteriormente se cuela y se introduce en el bol en el que se va a empapar el pan

La barra de pan se corta de tal manera que se puedan obtener rebanadas de aproximadamente 1 centímetro de grosor, que después se colocarán en el bol donde se haya vertido la leche caliente aromatizada Una vez el pan esté bien empapado, se retirará del bol, al igual que la leche sobrante

Los huevos se deben batir y se deben incluir en el mismo bol, donde luego se volverán a colocar las torrijas para rebozarlas antes de freírlas. Se les espolvorea un poco de canela en polvo también antes de freír.

El paso siguiente será echar el aceite de oliva en una sartén Cuando esté el aceite bien caliente, se introducen las torrijas, dejándolas dorar por ambos lados Se extraen y se colocan en un plato con papel absorbente, para eliminar el exceso de aceite proveniente de la fritura El proceso se repite con todas las rebanadas de pan

ESTUDIANTES DE USAC CONECTARON CON LA MADRE TIERRA EN SU VISITA A UN PEQUEÑO PUEBLO DEL PIRINEO NAVARRO DONDE SE MEZCLA LEYENDA, FANTASÍA Y SUGESTIÓN.

SUCUMBIERON ANTE LA IMPRESIONANTE VISIÓN DE LAS “CUEVAS DE LAS BRUJAS” EN LAS QUE SE DICE, REALIZABAN CELEBRACIONES CONSIDERADAS PAGANAS, RITUALES Y FIESTAS.

DISFRUTARON DEL ENTORNO DE EXUBERANTE NATURALEZA, CONTEMPLANDO LOS SECRETOS QUE ESCONDE ESTE MISTERIOSO PAISAJE. UN VIAJE EN EL TIEMPO LLENO DE MISTICISMO QUE SIRVIÓ DE EXCUSA PARA CONOCER UNO DE LOS EPISODIOS DEL PASADO MÁS OSCURO Y TRISTE DE LA HISTORIA DE ESPAÑA.

COMPLETARON LA RUTA CONOCIENDO UN PEQUEÑO E IDÍLICO RINCÓN DE LA COSTA VASCA, SAN JUAN DE LUZ UN LUGAR QUE LES INVITÓ A PASEAR Y DISFRUTAR DE LA ARQUITECTURA POPULAR Y DE LA BELLEZA DEL MAR

La excursión a Zugarramurdi fue espectacular No solo pudimos ver el norte de Nafarroa, una de las provincias más históricas de Euskal Herria, sino que, además, tuvimos la suerte de visitar el pueblo vasco de Saint Jean de Luz. Pudimos apreciar las diferencias en la arquitectura de los edificios entre Iparralde y el sur. Los colores de las casas, el ambiente en general, me encantó. Después fuimos a Zugarramurdi y eso ya fue para terminar el día de 10.

UN LUGAR MÁGICO

Después de esta excursión con USAC al pueblo de Zugarramurdi, me gustaría saber más sobre la historia de la Inquisición y las brujas.

¡No tenía ninguna información sobre todos los acontecimientos que se vivieron en esas tierras!

Probablemente es uno de los lugares más mágicos en los que he estado en mi vida ¡Me encantó!

En la cuevas de Zugarramurdi

Todo el grupo de USAC capitaneado por la directora, Miriam, fuimos a Iparralde. Llegamos a San Juan de Luz, una localidad de coloridas fachadas. Allí, paseamos, conocimos su plaza y la calle mayor llena de tiendas. Vimos su maravillosa playa y la iglesia de San Juan Bautista donde el Rey Luís XIV celebró su boda con la infanta de España “María Teresa”. También vi mi lugar favorito la “Maison Adam” donde elaboran galletas o pequeños pasteles siguiendo una receta de antaño. ¡Nada más y nada menos que de hace 357 años! Siguiendo con nuestra ruta, nos dirigimos a Sara, un pueblo pequeño, pero con mucho encanto. Recibimos información de cómo vivían las familias vascas. ¡Fue muy interesante! También el impacto de la Guerra Carlista en Sara. Para continuar el día, paramos en Zugarramurdi, uno de los pueblos más conocidos del Pirineo navarro. Allí nos detuvimos en el restaurante “Kattalin” donde recargamos fuerzas para continuar nuestra aventura. El museo de las brujas sirvió para que supiéramos todo lo que había pasado en tiempos pasados Mujeres y niñas fueron torturadas y quemadas vivas Me pareció increíble estar dentro de una cueva donde se habían celebrado “akelarres” (reuniones de brujas y hechiceros)

¡UN DÍA INTENSO, PERO LLENO DE HISTORIA!

E H I S T O R I A

Our excursion to Iparralde was special and insightful. Learning the history of the church in Sara and how a “Basque house” and family names are passed along was interesting for me. I saw quite a few of Elko's familiar last names on the graves. I also saw a lot of Eguzkilores and Lauburus which was cool to know what they meant and what they signified. The lunch we had in Zugarramurdi was delicious and fun to eat at a small Basque restaurant The history lesson we learned from the caves was inspiring and very cool to walk through them after visiting the museum.

Uno de los lugares que visitamos en nuestra primera excursión fue el pueblo de Sara. Hicimos un recorrido por sus calles, y el pequeño cementerio que rodea la iglesia. El interior es precioso, con una enorme galería de madera, típica de las iglesias vasco-francesas Recibí mucha información sobre la historia ¡Un día donde diversión, cultura y gastronomía hicieron un buen equipo!

Me encanta tener información sobre la lengua y la cultura vasca y sus tradiciones ancestrales Estoy muy agradecida de que USAC organizara esta excursión. Después de leer el libro “La Hija de la Luna” fue muy interesante visitar el pueblo de Zugarramurdi y recordar todo lo que habíamos aprendido en clase.

UNA DE LAS LABORES MÁS IMPORTANTES DEL PROCESO DE LA ELABORACIÓN DE LA SIDRA, ES LA RECOGIDA DE LA MANZANA. UN EVENTO QUE SIEMPRE HA SIDO MOTIVO DE FIESTA EN NUESTROS CASERÍOS.

ALGUNOS ESTUDIANTES DE USAC PUDIERON PARTICIPAR EN LA RECOLECCIÓN DE ESTA DELICIA OTOÑAL.

MOVIERON EL MANZANO, LO SACUDIERON Y RECOGIERON LA FRUTA DEL SUELO DIRECTAMENTE A MANO O CON “KIZKIA”, UNA VARA DE MEDIO METRO CON UN GANCHO PUNZANTE EN SU EXTREMO.

AGACHADOS, DE RODILLAS EN LA HIERBA, TODOS SE AYUDARON MANO A MANO TRANSPORTANDO LAS MANZANAS EN CESTOS Y ACERCÁNDOLAS HASTA LOS TRACTORES PARA SU POSTERIOR ALMACENAMIENTO.

VIERON COLORES, TEXTURAS, BRILLOS Y OLORES QUE SIRVIERON PARA DELEITARLES CADA INSTANTE.

TUVIERON LA OPORTUNIDAD DE INSERTARSE EN LA NATURALEZA REALIZANDO UN EJERCICIO PRÁCTICO, UNA MUESTRA VIVA QUE LES SIRVIÓ PARA DISTINGUIR LA LABOR Y EL TRABAJO, BASÁNDOSE EN LAS TRADICIONES RURALES LEJOS DEL MUNDO URBANO

UN ENCUENTRO CON AUTÓCTONOS EN EL QUE PRIMÓ EL CALOR DE LA AMISTAD, LA CERCANÍA Y LA COMPLICIDAD EN UN ENCLAVE DE VITALISTA COLORIDO.

SE CUMPLIÓ EL OBJETIVO CON EL QUE USAC TRATÓ DE PROMOCIONAR LOS ASPECTOS SOCIOCULTURALES RELACIONADOS CON LA MANZANA Y LA SIDRA.

UNA EXPERIENCIA CON BUEN AROMA

Tuve una experiencia inolvidable en un lugar situado entre los pueblos de Sara y Ainhoa Está en Lapurdi, una de las 7 provincias del País Vasco. Junto con otros compañeros del programa USAC, fuimos a vivir una gran aventura: “recoger manzanas”. Llegamos a un huerto con numerosos árboles cargados de esta deliciosa fruta y, una vez allí, nos dieron una cesta y un palo con un clavo en el extremo Este palo lo usamos para empujar la “sagarra” (manzana en vasco) Es muy práctico porque la agarra con fuerza sin tener que agacharte hasta el suelo para recogerla, e incluso puedes tirar la que está más podrida ¿He mencionado que recoger manzanas es un ejercicio? Cuando ya llevábamos recogidos unos cuantos cestos, empezamos a alcanzar las que estaban en los árboles. No puedo explicar con palabras cuánto nos divertimos esa mañana de sábado en Francia Cualquiera que lea esto, debería poner la experiencia en su lista de cosas nuevas que necesita hacer Lo recomiendo totalmente

When I initially crossed the border from Spain to France one Saturday to pick apples with friends, I didn't think too much about it But once there, we learned much more about how integral apples and the sidrería culture were to Basque tradition and history, and the experience mentally drew us much closer to the place we were beginning to call home. Outside of the practical Euskara lesson involved in the trip, the apple excursion was a very important aspect of learning about the traditional Basque way of life!

ESTUDIANTES DE USAC PASARON UNA JORNADA CON EDURNE MITXEO Y JUAN IGNACIO GONZÁLEZ SAGARDIA, PERSONAS INVOLUCRADAS EN SU CONSERVACIÓN. ESCUCHARON SUS EXPLICACIONES Y QUEDARON SORPRENDIDOS DE SU TOTAL IMPLICACIÓN.

Edurne, escritora de “Gau Beltza”, tuvo la amabilidad de venir a nuestra clase y hablarnos de las tradiciones vascas. Sirvió para darme cuenta de que desafortunadamente muchas de esas tradiciones se van perdiendo con el tiempo, si no intentas transmitirlas de generación en generación Por ejemplo, en México es muy importante el “Día de los muertos”, pero últimamente se celebra más “Halloween”. ¡Es una pena! Me encanta la gente como Edurne que intenta preservar tradiciones tan ancestrales.

Pienso que gente como ella, juega un papel primordial en la transmisión de costumbres a generaciones venideras y evitar su desaparición.

Since I’m Irish, and deeply interested in folk history and pagan religion, I’m maybe more familiar than some with the origins of American Halloween Originally called Samhain, it was the start of a new year and the death of the old, and a day when spirits could walk the earth The spirits of ancestors would come to visit homes, and tables would be set with an extra place for these spirits. Additionally, fairies were believed to be present, and wearing costumes (typically called “mumming”) was a way of disguising oneself from them. Huge bonfires would be lit, with different purposes: one my friends and I have practiced before during last year’s Samhain was that of lighting two huge bonfires Passing between them is believed to purify one for the coming new year Besides that, jumping over the bonfire is believed to bring good luck I liked learning about Gau Beltza, as it has such similar roots Like our presenter, although I can also enjoy the commercial fun and nonsense that is contemporary Halloween, I feel sad when I think about how symbolically rich Samhain once was and how relatively empty it is today. Nuestra clase de español tuvo la oportunidad de ir a Hondarribia para conocer a Juan Ignacio. Él nos explicó el origen de la “argizaiola”. Entramos en su casa y vimos las paredes decoradas con esta talla de madera tan tradicional. El olor que desprendían era indescriptible. ¡Gracias, Juan Ignacio, por enseñarme un poco más sobre esta cultura tan fascinante!

En un marco incomparable rodeado de tonos verdes y marrones se encuentra el museo donde reposa la obra de Eduardo Chillida, el escultor español más representativo del siglo XX. Los estudiantes de USAC tuvieron en este espacio una grata experiencia que fue más allá de admirar obras de arte. Pudieron interactuar y vivir la obra del artista desde dentro, pero en un entorno abierto y en plena armonía con la naturaleza.

“Lo llevaré a cabo sin marcar fechas. He comenzado a guardar obra, pero este maravilloso caserío no será un museo sino la señal de que soy de allí. No quiero una reconstrucción sino dejarlo firme y seguro tal y como está para llenarlo de una estructura contemporánea: que se vea el hoy y el ayer.”

The park was so big, and it was interesting to see how all the sculptures were scattered around it very strategically based on their meaning. I really liked the setting of how this museum/memorial was set, it was different from anything I’ve ever seen, and a place I’ll never forget.

Chillida Leku was one of the coolest places I’ve been to since getting to Donostia. The park was big and beautiful, and the art sculptures were very interesting to look at We learned a lot about Chillida and his life. Very cool experience

DESPUÉS DE VER EL EXTERIOR DEL MUSEO, CON SU FAMOSO E ICÓNICO PERRITO PUPPY, COMENZARON UN RECORRIDO POR LAS DIFERENTES SALAS DE ESTA IMPRESIONANTE OBRA ARQUITECTÓNICA DE FRANK GEHRY. UNA VISITA AMENA Y DIDÁCTICA DONDE DESCUBRIERON LOS ASPECTOS MÁS DESTACADOS DEL MUSEO.

DE RUTA POR UNA VILLA MARINERA

EL TOUR PRIVADO POR BERMEO FUE OTRA DE LAS PROPUESTAS DE USAC. LOS ESTUDIANTES PUDIERON VISITAR LOS GRANDES ATRACTIVOS TURÍSTICOS DE ESTE COLORIDO PUEBLO DE LA COSTA DE BIZKAIA. DISFRUTARON DE UN GRATO PASEO CONOCIENDO SU PUERTO MARINERO, SUS EDIFICIOS MEDIEVALES Y MODERNOS, SUS PLAZAS Y SUS CALLES CON ESTRECHAS CASAS PINTADAS EN UN ABANICO DE COLORES, INTENTANDO CONSERVAR GRAN PARTE DE SU CULTURA E HISTORIA.

¡UN RINCÓN PINTORESCO QUE LES ENAMORÓ!

The overall excursion of Bilbao was amazing. I enjoyed spending time with everyone in the program and enjoyed getting to explore the Guggenheim museum. During our free time I went to a beautiful cafe by the Bilbao river. I also enjoyed the food they served us, the lasagna was the best lasagna I've ever had.

The Excursion to Bilbao was really fun, my favorite part of the excursion was going to the Guggenheim museum. It was interesting getting to see all of the different art pieces they had as well as learning about them from the tour guide I enjoyed getting to spend time with all of my classmates from USAC After the Guggenheim museum they took us to a lovely place called Bermeo to get dinner where the food was amazing.

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao was really cool, but I especially liked the architecture. Then afterwards when we went to the restaurant, I thought the food and place was amazing.

My favorite part of the trip was Bermeo though, the views were incredible and whole town was super unique.

NAVEGANDO EN LA HISTORIA

CONOCIENDO EL PATRIMONIO MARÍTIMO VASCO

USAC ORGANIZÓ UNA VISITA A UN ANTIGUO ASTILLERO EN DESUSO RECONVERTIDO EN MUSEO. UBICADO EN UN HISTÓRICO PUERTO BALLENERO, LOS ESTUDIANTES PUDIERON VER LA CONSTRUCCIÓN EN DIRECTO DE UNA DE LAS RÉPLICAS NAVALES MÁS IMPORTANTES DEL MUNDO: “EL BALLENERO DEL SIGLO XVI SAN JUAN”.

UNA OPORTUNIDAD DE INFORMARSE DE LA RECUPERACIÓN DE UNO DE NUESTROS TESOROS HISTÓRICOS.

ORGULLO, FAMILIA, TRADICIÓN, CONSERVACIÓN DE LA HISTORIA Y SOSTENIBILIDAD, son solo algunas de las cosas que pueden definir a los vascos. ¡Es lo que me parece a mí! Todos, somos muy curiosos y necesitamos saber de dónde venimos, qué han hecho nuestros antepasados y qué impacto ha tenido en el mundo.

Es lo que pasa en todas las culturas. Sin embargo, cuando me entero de todo lo que han hecho los vascos, lo veo diferente. Parece mentira que un país tan pequeño, tenga tantas cosas en las que destaca. Por señalar alguna, sería lo que están haciendo actualmente en Pasaia.

¡Están intentando resucitar, por decirlo de alguna manera, la nao “San Juan”!

Me pareció conmovedor ver la dedicación y el orgullo de las personas que están involucradas en esta tarea.

Además, la forma en la que la guía nos contó la historia, la importancia, los hallazgos y cómo vivían el día a día, fue emocionante. ¡Se me ponían los pelos de punta!

Recordar acciones, tradiciones, aventuras…, muestra y nos demuestra el trabajo, la importancia de preservar la cultura de un país como este, el País Vasco.

Esta semana, junto a otros compañeros, fui a la Factoría Marítima Vasca Albaola Una excursión programada por USAC que nos encantó a todos. Se trata de un museo dedicado a la historia de la construcción e industria de barcos en el País Vasco. Muchas de las exposiciones de este museo, están relacionadas con la historia del descubrimiento y excavación de las ruinas del barco vasco "San Juan". Fue construido en el siglo XVI y sirvió para transportar aceite de ballena. Esta industria produjo mucha riqueza al País Vasco Esto me hizo pensar en las similitudes entre las islas del Pacífico y este país en el que estoy viviendo ahora En ambas culturas, quieren preservar los métodos para navegar en el océano. Hoy en día, el museo de Albaola está trabajando en un proyecto en el que intentan construir una réplica de la nao “San Juan” ¡Me pareció increíble la oportunidad de ver el proceso de construcción!

La visita a este museo me hizo comparar este proyecto con el hawaiano, ya que en Hawaii, también trabajan en la reconstrucción de ”Hōkūleʻa”, un barco muy famoso en su historia

Me encanta que haya gente que quiera continuar con la construcción de barcos de madera y no de vela modernos que están hechos de poliéster y fibra de vidrio Nos comentaron que muchos barcos de vela modernos son frecuentemente abandonados, con el paso del tiempo, en "cementerios de barcos".

Todas las excursiones que ha propuesto USAC me han gustado, pero tengo que decir que ésta en concreto, me ha encantado Recibimos información sobre la historia de los vascos y su ardua labor para cazar ballenas Pasaban muchos meses fuera de sus hogares puesto que necesitaban navegar hasta lugares muy lejanos. ¡Increíble su capacidad de trabajo en muchos aspectos!

La guía nos fue informando sobre la historia de los balleneros del País Vasco en Europa y Terranova Uno de los barcos, “El ballenero San Juan” se hundió en 1565 en uno de sus viajes. Más de 400 años después, el equipo de arqueología canadiense de “Parcs Canada” lo encontró y se empezó una investigación de 30 años de duración Nosotros tuvimos la oportunidad de ver cómo están construyendo una réplica.

Despedida

No es nada fácil desprenderse del lugar en donde has vivido durante unos meses, cuando has logrado coronarlo con la palabra hogar. Hay espacios a los que ya consideráis vuestros. Callejuelas escondidas, cafés, esquinas, parques y museos visitados, con los que sentís una especie de sentimiento de complicidad y que siempre estarán en vuestros recuerdos.

Os habéis detenido a escuchar sonidos de esta ciudad, habéis sentido su pulso, su ritmo de vida, lo habéis saboreado y vivido en primera línea.

Por eso, esperamos que Donostia- San Sebastián, los viajes, las actividades realizadas, los compañeros conocidos, os hayan dejado un buen sabor de boca.

Es hora de cerrar un ciclo, pero haciendo balance de lo que aspirabais y de lo que os lleváis.

Ojalá este sumario contenga esos universos de recuerdos que le den un sentido épico al ejercicio de nostalgia, de melancolía, y sirva para revivir esos momentos memorables.
