Dear Friends,
When St. Angela, founder of the Ursulines, wrote to her Sisters in the 1530s, her vision in faith extended far beyond her lifetime. She knew the vital importance of the work ahead when she prayed, “May the strength and true comfort of the Holy Spirit be in you all, so that you may be able to uphold and carry on courageously and faithfully the responsibility you have undertaken.”
Together, with the promised strength and comfort of God, we have undertaken our responsibility for Ursuline College.
Together, we have grown. In 2022-23, our undergraduate enrollment rebounded to near pre-pandemic levels, and we created new in-demand graduate degrees to meet the area’s workforce needs, as you see highlighted in these pages. Across the curriculum, we launched or reinvigorated the careers of hundreds of new graduates, some of you who are reading the College’s Annual Report for the first time.
You have been courageous and faithful.
I hope that I too have been courageous and faithful as a member of the Class of 1973. Since then, I have had the honor of being a teacher, an administrator,
and your president. I have seen my own Ursuline College education mirrored in the lives of thousands of new alums during my time here, each of them transformed for service, leadership, and professional excellence. Now that mission is in the hands of our new president, Dr. David King, whose commitment to you opens a new era of growth and potential for the College.
That mission is in your hands too, sustained by the prayers of St. Angela. As I write these final words to you, I can only imagine her mind and heart when she wrote, “Now it is time for me to leave you,” while urging us for the future: “Keep your faith and hope alive.”

Arrows Soar It was another exciting year for the Arrows. (1) Among the highlights, the College added its 11th team to its lineup: the emerging NCAA sport STUNT. The high-energy team sport focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, minus the shout-outs, in head-to-head competitions. (2) Ursuline College’s long-time Athletic Director Cindy McKnight, shown with Sr. Chris, was selected to serve on the NCAA Division II Management Council, which makes recommendations to the NCAA President’s Council on policies and regulations that govern the division. Building on the success for its nationally acclaimed Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions, Ursuline College expanded its portfolio to meet Northeast Ohio’s healthcare needs.
The College welcomed its inaugural class of 30 physician assistant (PA) students in January 2023 (see pages 12-13). The College also announced the addition of a nurse anesthesia track to its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in a unique collaboration with SNAP—Somnia Nurse Anesthesia Program, LLC—a privately owned nurse anesthesia educational company. Ursuline College with SNAP provides online coursework and in-person simulated and clinical learning experiences in a full-time, 36-month program.
Recruitment also began for a fall start to a new online bachelor’s degree program for Registered Respiratory Therapists with associate degrees. Modeled after the Breen’s successful online RN-to-BSN program, this degree completion program meets the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) aspirations that all respiratory therapists obtain a bachelor’s degree by 2030.
A hybrid undergraduate degree program in nutrition and dietetics was also in the works for a Fall 2023 start with both online and in-person classes. At the same time, a new part-time option was added to the College’s highly popular Second Degree Accelerated Program (SDAP) in nursing. This accelerated Bachelor of Science of Nursing or ABSN is for people who already have bachelor’s degree in another field but want a new career as a nurse.
“Many of our graduates are from Northeast Ohio and remain here after graduation to serve their local communities,” says Breen School Dean Patricia Sharpnack. “These programs build on Ursuline’s current strengths in undergraduate and graduate nursing, social work and art therapy to improve the lives of all in Cleveland and beyond.”

Selected from a pool of nearly 500 applicants, 30 future healthcare professionals arrived on campus in January 2023 from as far away as California, Iowa, Texas, and Florida. The Art Therapy Program Celebrates 10th Anniversary Ursuline College is home to one of the just two art therapy bachelor’s degrees in Ohio. This unique program commemorated the 10th anniversary of its founding in May 2023 as part of their Glow and Grow event. (1) Students and faculty gather to celebrate its graduating seniors and the program’s anniversary. (2) Students, who collectively contribute 600 service-learning hours in community-partner sites for their capstone work, show off the luminaries they made for a mindfulness walk around the labyrinth to conclude the celebration.

Ursuline Awarded Prestigious NEH Grant The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded a $173,680 grant to Ursuline College to host a NEH Summer Institute for higher education faculty. The June seminar, “Reading, Writing, and Teaching the Rust Belt: Co-creating Regional Humanities Ecosystems,” brought 25 national scholars to Cleveland and the Ursuline campus to discover the best teaching practices for sharing the story of the Rust Belt.
(1) “To teach the rise, fall and revival of the Rust Belt, you need to experience it,” explains grant recipient and institute organizer Katharine Trostel, PhD, professor of English. “This prestigious NEH grant enables Cleveland to serve as the ultimate learning lab.”

St. John College traces its roots to 1928 with a focus on educating teachers. In 1947, it added a bachelor’s degree in nursing to its offerings. When St. John closed its doors, it entrusted Ursuline College to continue its legacy of nursing excellence—a tradition that is upheld today. A look at the fiscal year spanning July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023.
The landscape of American higher education continues to evolve in the post-COVID era with new challenges from the declining birth rates, fewer high school graduates choosing college and the changing modalities of learning. While Ursuline College is not immune from these forces, it continues to have a strong financial position.
Below are several highlights from the Audited Financial Statements for the year ended June 30, 2023.
• The core revenue sources were tuition, fees, and auxiliary enterprises including room and board that represent 72% of the College’s income.
• The College’s investment portfolio is recovering from the pandemic with a slight increase to $50.15 million from $49.96 million.
• Total assets of more than $93.6 million remain strong despite a slight drop in value over the previous year at $94.0 million, largely due to depreciation.
• Approximately 84% of the College expenses are spent directly to support students through instruction, academic support, and other services.
