The Breen School of Nursing & Health Professions

Introduction Letter

The annual report of the Breen School of Nursing & Health Professions (BSONHP) summarizes the enrollment, recruitment, and major initiatives of each department within the school during the past academic year. This includes the Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing programs, the undergraduate Social Work program, the Respiratory Care completion program, the graduate Counseling and Art Therapy program, the graduate Physician Assistant program, and the graduate MA in Wellness program. The annual report is replete with data that validates the progress and success of our programs and is used in our accreditation visits.

The faculty and staff of the BSONHP have worked diligently to increase awareness of the brand and expand partnerships with health centers and other community organizations, expand the visibility of programs, grow the influence of faculty in the community and beyond, and continue to support strategic growth and viable partnerships. The BSONHP continues to expand enrollment while maintaining high standards in the quality of teaching-learning practices, retention and graduation rates, licensure and certification success, employment, and adherence to accreditation and regulatory requirements. All faculty maintain active licensure and certification in their areas of expertise, and frequently dual certification in their profession. These requirements, including active professional practice and scholarship in the art of teaching, are what set us apart from other colleges and universities.

The 2023-2024 Academic Year highlights are noted below:

Undergraduate BSN Program Student Enrollment Trends

*Undergraduate BSN Programs have continued to grow due to partnerships such as ASPIRE, HRSA grant funded STAR program, and growth in the SDAP enrollment. ^The pre-nursing designation will no longer be used in 2024.

BSN retention rates are calculated at the time the student starts NR courses.

Graduate Nursing Program Student Enrollment

*The DNP Nurse Anesthesia Program started in January 2024.

Graduate Nursing Program Student Enrollment (cont.)

The graduate MSN Programs have continued to realize a reduction in enrollment since 2018. COVID-19, changes in tuition reimbursement programs, the nursing shortage commanding high wages at the bedside, and healthcare worker fatigue have impacted recruitment and retention in advanced practice programs. The graduate programs have responded by changing to an online delivery mode for the post-graduate and DNP Programs in 2020. This year we underwent accreditation for a CRNA DNP Program in partnership with Somnia Nurse Anesthesia Program (SNAP) that was approved and admitted our first cohort of 25 nurse anesthesia BSN to DNP Program. We suspended DNP enrollments for the fall awaiting the COA approval.

The dual and rigorous accreditation, plus faculty reputation has created a strong national interest in the program. There has been a steady increase in all three-semester enrollment figures. A threat to the program is the initiation of similar programs at other institutions.

Based on new accreditation guidelines, the format for reporting now reflects retention within a calendar year tracked by cohort. This is indicated in the next chart, and publicly available on the Ursuline website. This is tracked as new students are admitted and does not reflect the total number of active students.

***Retention rate is % of students retained during the academic year out of the total number of students enrolled and active.

Physician Assistant Admissions and Enrollment

The admissions data for the Ursuline College Physician Assistant program over the past three cycles reveals notable trends and developments. The data from the 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and the current 2024-2025 cycle, which is still open, provides insight into the program’s growing popularity and the changing dynamics of the application process.

For the 2022-2023 cycle, the program received 357 applications, with 114 applications still in progress and 241 verified. Moving to the 2023-2024 cycle, there was a significant increase in interest, as evidenced by the 858 total applications, more than doubling the previous year’s figure. This surge included 160 applications in progress and 694 verified applications, indicating a marked rise in both initial interest and completed applications.

The current 2024-2025 cycle, which began in April 2024 and is set to close in September 2024, shows continued strong interest. As of now, there are 228 applications in progress, 32 verified applications, and a total of 263 applicants. It is important to note that these numbers are expected to rise as the cycle progresses, especially with the first admissions day on campus scheduled for late June 2024. The early data suggests that the program is on track to potentially match or exceed previous cycles by the time the application period closes.

Physician Assistant Program Admissions Data

The Ursuline College Physician Assistant program has seen a clear upward trend in applicant interest and engagement. The increase in in-progress and verified applications over the past few years indicates growing recognition and demand for the program. This trend not only underscores the program’s attractiveness and reputation but also highlights the need for continued support and resources to efficiently manage the rising number of applicants.

Respiratory Therapy and Development

The Respiratory Care program was successfully launched in Fall 2023. Beginning with three students, the program completed courses in Professionalism & Leadership in Respiratory Care, Research Methods in Respiratory Care, and Educational Methods in Respiratory Care. Summer 2024 saw the addition of an additional student and two additional courses: Patient & Family Communication and Current Trends in Neonatal & Pediatric Respiratory Care. With each core course in the Respiratory Care program, John Gallagher has incorporated a video podcast with an industry leader as a supplement to the curriculum.

In the Spring of 2023, Mr. Gallagher was instrumental in procuring two mechanical ventilators as a donation from Draeger Medical, Inc., an international medical device company. The devices have been a major addition to the simulation center at Ursuline College and will serve multiple departments in the training of mechanical ventilation and critical care practice. Gallagher has already conducted multiple training sessions with nursing and physician assistant students, highlighting the importance of interprofessional education (IPE). This exciting opportunity has been made public through social media.

Ursuline College participated in the Exhibit Hall during the meeting, which included a table for marketing the RC program to the 130+ attendees. All inquiries obtained during the event were shared with UCAP staff and follow-ups were completed.

Gallagher attended the AARC Summer Forum conference in Fort Lauderdale, FL in July 2023. The 3-day conference is the annual summer meeting for the AARC where educators, managers, and other leaders assemble to focus on key components of the profession, such as education. Coupled with this meeting was a workshop hosted by CoARC, the accrediting body for our program. He attended this workshop and met personally with our assigned CoARC referee. Gallagher also attended a dinner reception and award ceremony which provided further opportunity for networking with program directors from across the country.

Throughout October 2023, and in honor of National Respiratory Care Week, Gallagher met with more than a dozen respiratory care departments within the hospital systems of northeast Ohio. In addition, visits to all 3 regional associate degree programs were conducted. Each visit included an overview of the program and opportunities for questions and answers.

Also in October of 2023, a promotional video was created and distributed among mailing lists to highlight the features of the Respiratory Care program at Ursuline. This video was the latest in a series of videos featuring the program director and aimed at recruitment of new students.

In May 2023, John Gallagher visited local colleges to meet with second year students that were approaching graduation with associate degrees. These groups of students represent a strong pool of potential students for the RC degree advancement program at Ursuline College.

Counseling and Art Therapy Recruitment Events

CAT program director, Dr. Rebecca D. Miller and several other CAT faculty, together with Graduate Admissions Coordinator, Kaylee Olszewski, completed 20 recruitment and outreach events for 2023-2024. These are detailed further below. Additionally, Dr. Miller held multiple meetings with prospective students and their families, both in person and via Zoom, as well as fielded numerous inquiries on an ongoing basis to provide information about the program, conduct transcript reviews, and provide feedback on candidate materials (i.e., art portfolios) during the inquiry and/or application process. A total of 238 CAT program inquiries were tracked by Admissions from June 1, 2023- May 15, 2024 (the prior year had 502 inquiries, which was a significant uptick from prior years that may be associated with general trends in individuals pursuing new professional pathways in the post-pandemic years).

• 10 virtual information sessions were held, 1x/monthly from August to May, with 113 people registered and 59 confirmed attendees.

• Additionally, outreach presentations and/or information tabling occurred, either in person or virtually, at the following institutions, with potential impacts to over 1,500 individuals in attendance at these events, many of whom stopped by the tables to receive more information. The sessions and tabling focused on educating about the fields of Counseling and Art Therapy, and the distinctive dual-training program offered at Ursuline.

The PD brought CAT program informational materials to these conferences and posted them on bulletin boards or left on general informational tables, as possible.

Accreditation Updates

Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing

CCNE: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) passed new Essentials for Nursing that will be implemented by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for future accreditations. This adoption will shift education to competency-based assessments. The MSN Accreditation visit will take place in October 2024. The report will be submitted by August 2024. The BSN pre-licensure program will be reviewed for approval by the Ohio Board of Nursing in September (moved from June 2024). Preparation for these visits is underway.

Social Work

CSWE: The Council on Social Work Education’s 2022 Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) require all accredited programs to transition to the 2022 EPAS by July 1, 2025. The Social Work Program initiated discussions this academic year regarding curricular changes that will improve alignment with the standards.

Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care Completion Program

The Respiratory Care program was granted accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) in 2023. A site visit was completed on September 18 & 19 and the CoARC Board of Commissioners voted to approve Ursuline’s program for accreditation in Nashville, TN on November 4, 2023. The Respiratory Care program now has Provisional Accreditation by the CoARC. Continuing Accreditation is not granted until 3 years of outcome data are collected and reviewed.

Counseling and Art Therapy

Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and Accreditation of Educational Programs in Art Therapy (CAAHEP/ACATE): The CAT program completed its second yearly report for CAAHEP/ACATE, which was due September 15, 2023. All sites, supervisors, credentials, and current students were reported; retention, graduation, and positive placement rates; and program and student learning outcomes. The program accreditation was successfully renewed, with no citations. However, the reviewers requested a change to how student cohorts were reported in the management software in January. Following the submission of revised information, the program received a satisfactory renewal.

Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP): The faculty has been working diligently this past year to collect and review data to refine program policies, procedures, curriculum, and other areas as part of the CACREP self-study that has been ongoing during the 2023-2024 academic year. The faculty worked in task teams for each of the five areas of the new 2024 CACREP standards, with Program Director leading the charge for all teams. All faculty worked to update and complete curriculum crosswalk grids for their courses across the entire curriculum. CACREP is in the process of transitioning to a new online management system for the submission of the report and at this time is not clear whether it will be available by the end of July, when the self-study is due.

Physician Assistant Program

ARC-PA: The Ursuline College Physician Assistant (PA) program is currently undergoing its accreditation process with the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The ARC-PA is the recognized accrediting agency that protects the interests of the public and PA profession by defining the standards for PA education and evaluating PA educational programs within the territorial United States to ensure their compliance with those standards.

1. July 15, 2024: The accreditation packet is due to ARC-PA. This comprehensive document includes detailed information about the PA program’s curriculum, faculty qualifications, student performance, and other critical aspects that demonstrate compliance with ARC-PA standards.

2. October 7-8, 2024: The ARC-PA accreditation team will be on campus for an extensive site visit. During this visit, the team will review the program’s facilities, interview faculty, staff, and students, and ensure that the program adheres to the ARC-PA’s rigorous standards.

3. November 2024: Within approximately 30 days following the site visit, Ursuline College will receive a report with the ARC-PA team’s initial findings. The college will then have a 10-day window to respond to any findings or requests for additional information.

4. March 2025: The ARC-PA will convene to discuss the accreditation status of the Ursuline PA program. The college will recieve the final determination of the accreditation status shortly after this meeting.

Provisional Monitoring Phase: The Ursuline College PA program is currently in the Provisional Monitoring phase. This phase is part of the accreditation process for new PA programs and involves regular evaluations to ensure continued compliance with ARC-PA standards. It includes ongoing assessments of the program’s progress and adherence to the initial accreditation criteria. The college will undergo one more site visit at approximately 18 months following provisional accreditation. This visit is critical as it provides further validation of the program’s quality and sustainability.

Licensure and Board Certification

NCLEX-RN State Board Exam Pass Rates

The following statistics illustrate Ursuline College pass rates in comparison to state and national rates. For Ohio Board of Nursing approval purposes, the nursing program pass rate must meet within 95% of the National pass rates. New regulations now require graduates to take the NCLEX within 6 months of graduation, or not be counted in the school pass rate tabulation. Use of ATI, a capstone NCLEX preparation course, the ATI Live Review, and the VATI Review Course continue to be major sources of success for students and students will continue to benefit from these resources; also, faculty members are implementing new teaching/learning strategies to enhance deep learning. The success of these new initiatives continues to be monitored. During the pandemic, we saw a significant drop in NCLEX-RN scores. Lack of clinical experiences, online learning, and limited instructor contact have negatively impacted scores. As evidenced by Ohio scores, this trend is across all schools in Ohio. The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN-NCLEX) format was deployed in April 2023. Thus far, the outcomes are positive.

MSN APRN Board Certification Examination Results

These following numbers are based on the students with degrees conferred in May 2022, August 2022, and January 2023. Health Resource and Simulation Center (HRSC)

The

usage is outlined below.

Spring 2024 Usage

Main Lab Hours

Health Assessment Lab Hours

Supervised Lab Hours

Simulation Hours

HoloLens Hours

227 hours (course labs & testing) 9% increase from Spring 2023, mainly due to Part-time SDAP use

113 hours (170% increase from Spring 2023 likely due to increased use by NR 235, PT SDAP, and PA program)

33.5 hours scheduled, student practice hours logged: 53.75 hours (20% decrease in hours scheduled from Spring 2023, likely due to increase main lab time for other labs and holiday schedule)

46.5 hours (same as Spring 2023)

48 hours (118% increase from Spring 2023 likely due to increased number of cohorts and incorporating into 215 and 465)

HRC Improvements made in 2023-2024

• Upgraded simulation equipment as part of Laerdal’s flex plan. SimMan, SimMom, and SimJunior were installed in May 2023.

• Renovated spaces in Dauby to create a new classroom (DB 124), Health Assessment Room (DB 120), and Simulation Room (DB 116), as well as new storage closets for the PA and CRNA programs and a new control room (DB 118).

• Worked with Jim Simonson to purchase all equipment and supplies for new HRC spaces.

• Purchased new IV pads (5) for PIV insertion training.

• Created two mobile testing stations with laptops and webcams for use in NR 235 head to toe testing, giving us the ability to record testing in PH 107 (health assessment lab) instead of the main lab.

Evaluation of Goals from 2023-2024

• Increase use of simulation in the undergraduate program by 10% next academic year.

• Simulation hours remained the same in Fall and Spring semesters as last academic year. This is due to the same faculty continuing the same simulations as last academic year and other faculty not adding new simulations. Goal not met; will revise for next AY.

• Incorporate at least 1 simulation experience into the graduate program per semester.

• Attempted to work with acute care NP faculty to incorporate simulation experience in fall semester. We completed a simulation template with scenario, but the faculty chose to use virtual simulation experience through EHR Go instead of an in-person simulation. Goal partially met, will consider feasibility for next AY.

• Increase use of HoloLens in the undergraduate program by 10% next academic year.

• HoloLens hours remained the same in Fall semester as last academic year. Hours increased by 118% in Spring semester due to incorporating a new scenario into NR 215, a new prioritization exercise in NR 465, and trialing incorporation into NR 255. Goal Met.

• Incorporate use of EHR tutor and barcode scanning into at least 2 simulation experiences and continue to evaluate need for use/feasibility of use in kinesthetic testing.

• While EHR tutor was used to teach barcode scanning in NR 255 SDAP during lab day, incorporation of this tool in simulation and kinesthetic testing was not done. This is mainly due to students not being trained on EHR tutor in other courses, which makes it difficult to incorporate into simulation. Goal partially met, will consider feasibility for next AY.

• Streamline process for reserving HRC spaces for all BSONHP programs.

• Met with Barb Helms in Registrar’s office about utilizing Astra, an online scheduling system currently used by the registrar’s office. Waiting on grant funding to help build templates in Astra for use by HRC. Goal partially met; will continue for next AY.

• Increase accuracy of documentation of student supervised lab hours through streamlined process.

• We were able to have students sign in starting Spring 2024, in which students logged approximately 54 hours of practice time. Goal partially met; will continue for next AY.

Competency Testing

The transition from D2L based assessments to ATI based assessments was completed in spring 2023. During the 20232024 academic year all courses utilized ATI for the competency-based assessments. While we have consistently met the SEP goal that 80% of students achieve a 76% or greater on their competency exams, 2023 was the first year that we also met the ASL goal that 80% of students achieve a 76% or better on their NR 404 competency assessment.

Student comments and suggestions were reviewed, and policies were clarified for any areas of concern. Student progression and student accomplishments were reviewed as well. New program development and faculty needs were included in each meeting discussion. This academic year, the GNC continued the Student Advisory Meetings also referred to as “think tanks” for students to provide input and clarify questions or concerns. The Think Tank was revised to be integrated into courses, so a faculty member not involved with teaching the students led the discussion. Students from

Ursuline

each level of the program participated to obtain views from all levels of the program. A structured interview process was used, and constructive feedback was received from the students. In addition, a survey was developed using the Think Tank questions and feedback and emailed to all graduate nursing students to solicit feedback. The Think Tank feedback was reviewed by the A&E committee with a summary provided to the GNC.

DNP Steering Committee: Chair, Dr. Janet Baker

The DNP Steering Committee met on the following dates: September 12, 2023, Nov 14, 2023, January 25, March 21, May 9, and May 24, 2024. Additional meetings were held to hear three students’ DNP Project proposals. All DNP project proposals were approved for implementation in spring 2024. The primary work of the DNP Steering Committee was focused on reviewing student progression, reviewing new admission files, scholarly project development, and the oversight and development of DNP policies and procedures related to student learning experiences. The committee spent several meetings planning for planning for the larger classes to accommodate the nurse anesthesia students. Various teaching resources were evaluated for adaptation to the online course. Those resources included Academic Writer, Intellectus Statistics, and the SPSS Grad Packet for use by DNP students and faculty. The committee reviewed and updated the DNP Project Guidelines as well as the DNP student Handbook to incorporate changes warranted by the addition of the Nurse Anesthesia DNP track. The DNP curriculum for the Nurse Anesthesia with revisions to the postmaster DNP curriculum was added. The Postmaster DNP curriculum plan is now organized so that the coursework can be completed in 18 months. The DNP Steering Committee also reviewed and updated the DNP systematic Evaluation Plan for the 2023-2024 academic year on May 21, 2024.

The Graduate Nursing Assessment and Evaluation Committee (AEC): Chair, Dr. Richard Martin

The Assessment and Evaluation committee met on the following dates: November 16, 2023, and April 22, May 15, and May 30, 2024. The Graduate Nursing Assessment and Evaluation Committee focuses on developing the methods used to collect and analyze data to promote continuous quality improvement in the graduate nursing program. The AEC focused on data collection and analysis for the Systematic Evaluation Plan for inclusion in the Continuous Improvement Progress Report for the MSN program and ongoing evaluation of the DNP program. The Assessment and Evaluation committee reviewed data received from all program surveys including the 1 and 3 annual alumni surveys, employer surveys, and MSN exit surveys completed by students in May, August, and December. The MSN Systematic Evaluation Plan was revised to capture the data required for Standard IV of the CCNE evaluation criteria and data was collected and then entered. Results were analyzed and presented by AEC to the Graduate Nursing Committee. The A&E developed a multi-stage action plan to increase response to Employer surveys. Course evaluation surveys for both MSN and DNP courses for summer 2023 and fall 2023 were reviewed and summarized for the GNC as well.

Graduate

Nursing Curriculum Subcommittee: Chair, Dr. Connie Beal

The curriculum sub-committee had a total of nine meetings in the 2023/2024 academic year. The committee met on September 25, 2023, November 13, 2023, February 5, 2024, February 26, 2024, March 18, 2024, April 15, 2024, April 29, 2024, May 13, 2024, and May 20, 2024. The committee is comprised of 5 faculty members representing acute care, psych-mental health, and primary care tracks. The major focus of the committee was centered around mapping the AACN essentials which outline the necessary curriculum content and expected competencies of graduates from Graduate and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. The committee explored multiple APRN simulation apps and software. Additional outcomes are listed in the BSONHP Graduate Nursing Annual Report.

Mentoring and Practicum Subcommittee: Chair, Dr. Michele Duns

Five Clinical Instructors met with Committee Chair Dr. Duns on November 7, 2023 and March 28, 2024 for the fall and spring semesters. The agenda for each meeting included clinical documentation and clinical site placements. Data from the prior semester’s clinical site evaluations and preceptor evaluations were reviewed. The committee also reviewed and approved revised Preceptor evaluations developed by NONPF to be used by the Graduate Nursing Program for the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner tracks (AGNP). The revised Preceptor Evaluation of Student Form was implemented as a pilot in the Advanced Diagnostics class. The results of that pilot were reviewed, and it was determined that an additional column needed to be added to the form to allow for the students to complete their self-evaluation of the clinical experience. This change will be made to the form and this form will be implemented for students completing NR 616 and NR 617 in the Fall and then for NR 618 and NR 619 in the Spring and then NR 638 in the Summer of 2025. By Fall 2025, all clinical courses for the FNP or AGNP tracks will be using the 2024 NONPF Preceptor Evaluation of Student Form. Clinical instructors discussed ways to connect with students early in the semester to create an ongoing dialogue during the semester. It was determined that clinical instructors would attend the associated didactic courses and if this was not feasible, set up individual Zoom meetings with students. This will enhance clinical site visits and communications with the students’ assigned preceptors. The clinical instructors are pleased with the communication of the clinical assignments early in the semester with access to the clinical courses for evaluation of the clinical logs and case studies submitted by the students.

HRSA Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) Grant

For the academic year 2023-2024, Ursuline College did not apply for additional funds from the NFLP as funds were still available for students for this academic year. Eleven students received NFLP funds for the 2023-2024 academic year. Dr. Patricia Sharpnack is the PI and manages the funding.

Interprofessional Education (IPE - Graduate Nursing)

Two students were selected to participate in the Wade Park VA Nurse Practitioner Residency Program beginning July 2023. This is an interprofessional education experience and only four students are selected. The program participated in a virtual IPE learning experience with the NEOMD PharmD students and medical students in the fall of 2022. The learning experience was an interprofessional approach to reviewing case studies and discussing collaborative treatment. All the participants valued this experience. In August 2023 graduate nurses participated in a live IPE experience with University Hospitals PharmD residents who led the interprofessional discussion on six case studies. Students were assigned to an interprofessional group, and each group worked through the case students to develop treatment plans for common diagnostic areas. The event was held at Ursuline College and evaluated by all participants to be a valuable learning experience with requests for further opportunities of this nature.

Graduate Nursing Colloquium

The 2023 annual Graduate Nursing Colloquium was held at the Corporate College Colloquium on December 4, 2022, with a virtual option provided. Sixty-four individuals participated via Zoom and more than 165 guests, students, and faculty participated in this event. Thirty students presented their MSN posters. The posters and the event were positively received by all attendees as a showcase of scholarship and program integration. Sister Christine De Vinne, Ursuline College President was the keynote speaker. She delivered a message titled “Nurses Inspire.” Recognition for Sister Christine was also a part of the colloquium in honor of her upcoming retirement.

Social Work Program Development

and Maintenance

The social work program’s inaugural cohort of Survivor Link + AmeriCorps students led a donation drive for period products for local domestic violence shelters in October. The Survivor Link program provides social work students with specialized training in domestic violence assessment, intervention, and prevention, and funding stipends for their work in field placement internships.

Social Work Orientation

In August 2024, the Social Work Program initiated an orientation consisting of both asynchronous and synchronous opportunities to prepare students to enter the social work program. Daily videos were sent out to students for one week that provided information about Social Work Program expectations and policies. A one-hour synchronous session was held with students to provide information about college academic and personal resources, accommodations, and other program information.

Placements 2023-24

Nine students completed field placements in 2023-24, one of whom is in Maryland and one in Indiana.

• Visits to evaluate potential field placements were conducted in person and on Zoom.

• All field instructors possessed the necessary credentials as required by CSWE Accreditation Standards

• Field Instructor Training was conducted on Zoom by Dr. Evans.

• Students completed their field placement hours in person within the agency setting.

• Site visits each semester to monitor/assess student learning and practice competence and field setting effectiveness were conducted by Zoom or in person with Ms. Bennett and Dr. Evans.

• All student concerns and questions regarding the field placement were handled by Dr. Evans through Zoom or phone conferencing with the student and the field instructors.

• Field placement settings this year included social work and outreach to the following populations: older and disabled adults in the community; clients with mental health and substance use disorders; community-based child and family services; housing; infants and toddlers in a crisis nursery; court-mandated treatment settings; women who experienced trauma and interpersonal violence.

The December 2023 Virtual Town Hall brought social work students together to focus on some of the major changes in the 2022 CSWE EPAS related to anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices. Theoretical concepts underpinning both Annual Virtual Town Hall

practice approaches (intersectionality, cultural competence, cultural humility) were explored, and faculty facilitated break-out case study discussions with students.

Small Group Advising Sessions

In March 2024, the Social Work Program held its second annual small group advising process to increase opportunities for professional advising and professional socialization for students. Participating students met with a faculty member to explore several issues the students identified as important, including getting ready for field placement or the professional work environment, balancing responsibilities, and the barriers and challenges they experience to academic success.

Grant Activity

AmeriCorps Survivor Link Grant

Dr. Evans implemented the second year of the AmeriCorps Survivor Link program with three students in the 2023-24 academic year. The students participated in training about evidence-based domestic violence interventions, healthy relationships, and domestic violence resources in the community. The hours required for participation will be carried out as a part of the student’s field placement hours. In return, students will receive a stipend for their 450 service hours and a financial award for education. Each of the students also presented three educational programs to the community about domestic violence and carried out a service activity to benefit survivors.

Great Minds Fellowship Funding

Two students participated in the Great Minds Fellowship funding in 2023-24 and provided mental health services in the following settings:

• Brighter Tomorrow Community Services working with adolescents and adults

• Community Support Services, Inc. in Akron, working with adults

Behavioral Health Workforce Grant

Dr. O’Brien worked with the Grant Writer to identify opportunities for funding the Ohio Behavioral Health Workforce Grant. In the 2024-25 academic year, students will have the opportunity to be paid for their internships. Dr. O’Brien and Dr. Evans also developed several continuing education workshops to present to agency staff in which students complete their practicums.

Student Mental Health Support

Dr. O’Brien worked with Deanne Hurley, the CARES team, and Kathleen Wildman, the grants writer to develop a Resource Navigator position to be filled by a social work student. The student started training activities in the Spring of 2024 and will continue as a Resource Navigator through the Spring of 2025. Her work will be focused on providing information and referral services to students facing barriers to academic success. Dr. O’Brien will be responsible for developing the position and supervising the students.

NDC Transfers

Transfer pathways were formalized for social work students needing to secure alternative higher education options because of NDC’s closure. Dr. O’Brien supported admissions in evaluating transcripts and speaking with students as needed.

Respiratory Care Program Development

and Maintenance

Ursuline College is once again stepping up to meet the growing healthcare workforce needs of Northeast Ohio. Its new online Applied Science (AAS) to Bachelor of Science (BS) in Respiratory Care program received provisional accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).

Registered nurses, respiratory therapists or RTTs are eligible to sit for their licensure exam with an associate degree. However, for more than a decade registered nurses have been encouraged to continue their education and earn a bachelor’s degree in their field—a scenario on the horizon for respiratory therapists.

Counseling and Art Therapy Program Development and Maintenance

Faculty Changes and/or Updates

At the start of Fall 2023, we welcomed new Clinical Director, Areka Foster, LPCC, ATR-BC, SEP. Areka was formerly an adjunct and doctoral intern with the program during Spring of 2023, and trained under former Clinical Coordinator, Judy Jankowski, LPCC-S, LICDC, ATR-BC, CHT, who stepped down from the role at the end of Summer 2023 and transitioned into an adjunct position. Half-time faculty, Gail Rule-Hoffman, was granted emeritus just prior to the start of Fall 2023 and this was her last year as a half-time faculty.

New Graduate Assistantship Positions

We welcomed two new Graduate Assistants, Amber Bennett and Arvilla Morett, in the Spring of 2024! These two new annually renewable GA positions are part of an initiative developed through the Office of Admissions to boost Spring enrollment and increase the diversity of the student body. They offer a partial tuition waiver, along with a part-time work position. Amber currently works within the CAT department, and Arvilla works primarily with the Graduate Admissions team. We are hoping to add additional positions in the coming years.

Curriculum and Other Programming Updates

Curriculum/Course Sequencing

No major changes were made to the curriculum or course sequencing during the 2023-2024 year. A sequence of three one-credit trauma-focused elective courses, developed from within the undergraduate social work department, were approved for cross-listing (with additional requirements for graduate-level students) with CAT and will be offered to CAT students beginning in Fall 2024. These courses will be offered virtually and asynchronously. Faculty who teach the research sequence courses (CAT 591, CAT 594, and CAT 596) continued to work together over the past year to refine the capstone/research process. The program transitioned to a poster showcase this past year, with further details below.

Special Initiatives & Events, & Guest Speakers Hosted

The Counseling and Art Therapy Department was able to secure $32,375.00 from the Behavioral Health Workforce grant. The funds will be used to offer training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to students, faculty, and affiliated site supervisors, during the upcoming Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 terms. The EMDR opportunity will impact 14 students, 4 faculty, and 2 supervisors while the TF-CBT experience will impact 20 students, 2 faculty, and 3 supervisors. The training and application of these evidenced-based treatment approaches will increase Ursuline’s programming capabilities to promote positive outcomes within marginalized populations in alignment with our mission of service. These funds were largely secured through the efforts of CAT faculty member and doctoral student/intern, Diana Wallace, who collaborated with the Ursuline development office.

The Ohio Buckeye Art Therapy Association (BATA) held its 42nd annual symposium September 7-9, 2023, on the campus of Ursuline College. The Symposium was jointly hosted by the graduate CAT program and the undergraduate Art Therapy department. The symposium provided opportunities for members to connect with creative colleagues who share similar interests, attitudes, and aspirations. The theme was, “Rekindling the Art Base of Art Therapy.” Dr. Shaun McNiff, Professor Emeritus at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was the keynote speaker. Dr. McNiff is internationally known for promoting universal access to artistic expression as a source of creative well-being and human understanding. The Symposium featured presentations from nearly

all full-time CAT faculty members and several adjunct faculty and alumna, including Fawn Gordon, Ph.D., LPCC, assistant professor; Katherine Jackson, Ph.D., ATR-BC, associate professor; Rebecca D. Miller, Ph.D., LPC, ATR-BC, ATCS, CCLS, program director and assistant professor; and Diana Wallace, MA, LPCC-S, ATR-BC, instructor; adjunct instructors, Heather Denning, MA, ATR-BC, Judy Jankowski, LPCC-S, ATR-BC, and Gretchen Miller, MA, ATR-BC, ACTP; and CAT alumna, Kayla Hensel, MA; and many other CAT program affiliates from the Cleveland area. Additionally, CAT graduate work study students Monica Brown, Allysa Carlson, Amber Keaton, and Alayna Smith volunteered to help ensure that the event ran smoothly.

The CAT program has continued to invite guest speakers into CAT classes to enhance students’ learning in a broad array of topics relevant to the professions of Counseling and Art Therapy. The are a diversity of speakers and topics that have been covered just within the last two years. Because the CAT faculty lacks diversity in gender and racial representation, we have aimed to bring in guest speakers in these under-represented areas to also enhance and support the diversity of the program.

Practicum and Internship Updates

General Overview and Highlights

The Practicum and Internship Program for the 2023-2024 year remained dedicated to providing the students with a solid foundation for entry into the professions of counseling and art therapy. We welcomed several new sites and supervisors, as listed further below, with a continued focus on increasing the diversity of supervisors and sites. In addition, the curriculum was reviewed, and assignments were revised in practicum courses, particularly in areas of clinical documentation and treatment planning. To have a clearer understanding of the roles of each supervisor and to have consistent terminology with CACREP standards, the Statement of Understanding was redeveloped as the Supervision Contract. With feedback from formal and informal assessments from students about the fieldwork placement process, a checklist for Practicum and Internship preparation was developed. The year also included continued training and meetings for students, faculty, and supervisors held virtually and in person to maintain communication, solicit feedback, address updates and changes, and answer questions and provide support. Overall, the clinical component of the program continues to provide a strong foundation of clinical and art therapy skills.

Other important highlights for 2023-2024 include:

• In total, 26 students completed their clinical hours during the 2023-2024 academic year.

• Curriculum Updates: The video role-play assignment was modified in CAT 547 Clinical II Practicum to promote the development of counseling and art therapy skills. As noted above, individual and group notes, treatment planning, and supervisor contracts were updated for all fieldwork courses. The expectations and role of the CAT 649 Advanced Internship were updated.

• Updates were made to the Fieldwork Experience Manual.

• Tevera, the electronic platform for fieldwork, continued to provide the tools needed to help the students meet the requirements and to house the many roles, responsibilities, and documentation needed. It ran smoothly, and students were able to use the system with few errors or complications. Ongoing communication with sites and supervisors helped to determine sites with openings.

• Two continuing education workshops were held virtually for supervisors for OCSWMFT-approved CEUs, one in Fall and one in Spring:

• The fall workshop provided 3 CEUs in ethics: Ethics in Supervision: An Educational and Experiential Approach by Heidi Larew, LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, ATCS. There were 24 attendees.

• The spring workshop provided 3 CEUs in supervision: Integrating Multicultural Frameworks into Existing Supervision Models by Diana Wallace, LPCC-S, ATR-BC. There were 27 attendees.

• Three adjunct faculty supervisor meetings were held virtually to provide updates on the form changes, to clarify the expectation of each class (including confusion about the B sections), to provide support, review changes in the fieldwork placement manual, and gain feedback.

• Several meetings were held each term to prepare and support students in their clinical fieldwork.

• The next site supervisor orientation and meeting is tentatively scheduled for early Fall- August 27, 6:30-7:30 pm.

• Rebecca Miller, Diana Wallace, and Areka Foster have worked to ensure that CAT’s clinical fieldwork program is prepared for CACREP recertification and update to the 2024 standards.

Service-Learning

In Summer 2023 from July 3-10th, 15 students/alumni and friends of Ursuline went to Cheyenne River Reservation for one week to volunteer and provide clinical mental health counseling and art therapy to Lakota youth. The leadership team consisted of Katherine Jackson and Megan Seaman, who led the group of volunteers in working with over 75 children and created good relationships over the course of one week. This was the 8th trip to Cheyenne River to help with the Red Can Graffiti Jam. In Spring 2024, a group of 10, including faculty, students, and alumni, began preparing for an upcoming trip to South Africa, which will take place in the coming Summer, and be led again by Katherine Jackson and Megan Seaman. In addition, a group of 10 CAT students will return to Cheyenne River Reservation in the coming summer term, led by CAT adjunct faculty Heather Denning.

1. Mentoring Program: From Fall 2023 to Spring 2024, the mentoring program added 12 new mentees within their first year and 6 mentors transitioning into their final year who connected and have established a variety of mentoring relationships that best suit their needs. During the fall and spring open houses, mentors and mentees had the opportunity to learn about the program, meet other members, and participate in making paper beads and soap. It is one of the few opportunities where students within different cohorts can socialize and connect in a casual atmosphere. An open house in the coming Fall 2024 term is tentatively scheduled for early September.

2. Chi Sigma Iota, Chi Alpha Theta Chapter Activity 2023-2024: The Chi Alpha Theta (CAT) chapter of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Counseling Academic & Professional Honor Society International had a successful year of activities and membership involvement for the 2023-2024 academic year. Under the student leadership of chapter president, Bailey Campbell and secretary and presidentelect, Monica Brown, the CAT chapter expanded leadership, recruited new members, and provided various programming for the Ursuline community. These efforts were achieved through collaboration on behalf of CSI leadership, student members, and co-faculty advisors, Drs. Megan Seaman and Fawn Gordon. Programming efforts centered around advocacy, social activities, recruitment,

and fundraising. Specifically, our chapter showed our support in advocating for members of the LGBTQ+ community, creating signs aimed to increase visibility and create a space of belonging. Students also honored the life of Nex Benedict, a non-binary student in Oklahoma who was targeted at their school due to their gender identity, by creating a visual representation of ways that we create places of safety and respect. In early June, members of the Chi Alpha Theta chapter of CSI walked in the Cleveland Pride March on June 1st, 2024. The group marched to 3. honor LGBTQ+ friends, family members, neighbors, and fellow humans. Other 4. social events consisted of Pumpkin Painting and nature hikes. Areka Foster, a CAT faculty member, represented our chapter during the CSI Delegate Business meeting held during the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Conference in Denver, Colorado. The CAT chapter held its 4th formal initiation on Friday, April 19, 2024. Thirteen new members were initiated. Dr. Chase Morgan-Swaney (he/him), LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC, ACS, served as our guest speaker for the event, encouraging leadership to continue fostering their social justice identity.

There were 13 Inductees into Chi Sigma Iota, Chi Alpha Theta Chapter, Spring 2024. Chi Alpha Theta members marching in CLE Pride event.

White Coat Ceremony for the Inaugural Class of the Physician Assistant Program

At the end of the Fall Semester, Ursuline College hosted its first White Coat Ceremony to honor the inaugural class of the Physician Assistant (PA) Program as they prepare to begin their clinical rotations. The ceremony serves as a rite of passage emphasizing compassionate care and humanism in medicine.

In the presence of family, Ursuline College leadership, and peers, the students recited an oath acknowledging their core duty to put patients first. They were presented with their white coats, receiving both an iconic symbol of their profession and a powerful reminder to lead with empathy. Ursuline College is proud to carry on this tradition as our first cohort of PA students embark on their clinical training. By prioritizing humanistic values from day one alongside scientific excellence, we hope to shape healthcare providers committed to caring for the whole person.

During the 2023-2024 academic year, the Physician Assistant (PA) program at Ursuline College underwent significant curriculum updates and development to enhance the educational experience for our students and align with the evolving standards of the profession. These changes were driven by our commitment to providing a rigorous, comprehensive, and innovative curriculum that prepares our graduates to excel as compassionate, knowledgeable, and skilled physician assistants. The program implemented a range of improvements, including the addition of required readings, cumulative assessment strategies, increased emphasis on higher-order thinking skills, policy revisions, credit hour adjustments, and technological enhancements to the examination process.

The program also restructured the assessment item writing and validation process through training and consistent implementation and developed a pre-matriculation curriculum to address foundational science gaps, facilitate selfdirected learning, and familiarize students with anticipated core science content. Furthermore, the program made substantial changes to the admissions process to attract and select the most qualified and competitive applicants.

Program Initiatives and Events

The PA program has actively engaged in various initiatives and events throughout the year, focusing on community outreach, interprofessional education (IPE), and public health. Our students have collaborated with several community and national organizations, including the Greater Cleveland Foodbank, Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF Foundation), The Gathering Place, Haven’s Home, and the Red Cross. These partnerships have provided our students with valuable opportunities to serve their community, develop leadership skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health.

In addition to these collaborations, the PA program has continued its strong commitment to interprofessional education through ongoing collaborations with NEOMED across both didactic and clinical cohorts. First-year PA students and first-year Pharmacy students participated in the “Empathy, Vulnerability, and Communication Toolkit” activity, which focused on enhancing the healthcare team experience through communication across disciplines. This initiative fostered a deeper understanding of the importance of effective communication and collaboration in providing high-quality patient care.

Furthermore, second-year PA students, Ursuline Nursing students, and second-year Pharmacy students engaged in “The Amazing Patient Race,” a case study that challenged participants to make real-time decisions and navigate complex patient care obstacles. This innovative activity provided students with a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a simulated interprofessional setting, preparing them for the challenges they may face in their future careers.

Recently, our students have also become involved with Empower Sports through Ursuline College, further expanding their community engagement efforts. The PA program also provided community services and support through volunteer opportunities with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Be the Match, and NAMI of Greater Cleveland. These experiences have allowed our students to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in their community while developing a deeper understanding of the social and economic factors that influence health outcomes. Moreover, the PA program hosted a Flu/COVID vaccination clinic in collaboration with the Cuyahoga Community Health Department. This initiative not only supported the health and well-being of the Ursuline Community but also provided our students with hands-on experience in vaccine administration and patient education.

These diverse initiatives and collaborations demonstrate the PA program’s unwavering commitment to preparing compassionate, skilled, and socially responsible healthcare professionals who are well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of patients and communities.

BSONHP Community Advisory Board

A BSONHP community advisory board consisting of nursing leadership in academia and practice, physicians, and community leaders convened in person this year on September 22. 2023. The board provided valuable direction for the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs.

BSONHP Diversity Committee

The BSONHP Diversity Committee met 5 times during the academic year 2023-2024. During this time 3 additional faculty members and 1 additional student member joined the committee. During the academic year 2023-2024, the committee cosponsored 1 diversity event. On November 13, 2023, a team of Metro Health social workers and a substance abuse team presented a lunch and learn event, “Opioid Use, Stigma, and Culturally Responsive Treatment Approaches.” The event was well attended by nursing and physician assistant students. The committee strives to bring awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion to campus. There are plans for AY 2024-2025 to bring a speaker to address healthcare concerns of the LGBTQ+ community and to reflect on events geared to support findings from the 2023 campus climate survey.

BSONHP Diversity Committee Goal

The Diversity Committee seeks to provide recommendations and create opportunities for interventions that support the development of culturally diverse faculty/staff and promote educational strategies reflective of cultural humanity within the Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions.

Faculty and Alumni Awards (External)

Faculty from the BSONHP have consistently been recognized for innovation in teaching and learning, leadership, and community involvement from external organizations that are reflected in departmental reports. Some additional recipients include:

• Faces of Care Nurse Educator Award: Caitlin Yeager

• 2023 Sigma Iota Psi Virginia Olsavsky Mentorship Award: Rosa Johnson, Clinical faculty

• UHHS Daisy Award Recipient: Maria Mlinac

The Physician Assistant (PA) program faculty and students have demonstrated exceptional commitment to professional development and community service. Faculty member, Professor Adrienne Colabuno continues to serve as a PA Champion on the Mental Health Steering Committee of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Health Foundation. This prestigious role involves attending biannual meetings in January and July, contributing to the development of mental health initiatives and resources for PAs nationwide. Additionally, Adrienne Colabuno serves as a proposal reviewer for the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA), helping to ensure the quality and relevance of educational content presented at PAEA conferences and events. Faculty members Erin Basilius and Andrea Rini have also made significant contributions to the PA education community through their scholarly work. Erin Basilius co-authored “A Beginner’s Guide to AI,” which was presented as a Spotlight Presentation at the 2023 PAEA Forum. This presentation showcased the potential applications of artificial intelligence in PA education and practice, providing valuable insights for educators and practitioners alike. Furthermore, Erin Basilius and Andrea Rini collaborated on a presentation titled “Incorporating Telemedicine into and Across the Curriculum,” which has been accepted for the 2024 PAEA Forum. This timely topic addresses the growing importance of telemedicine in healthcare delivery and highlights innovative strategies for integrating telemedicine education throughout the PA curriculum.

These achievements showcase the PA program’s dedication to advancing the profession, promoting mental health awareness among PAs, and staying at the forefront of emerging trends in healthcare education and practice. By actively participating in national organizations, committees, and scholarly endeavors, our faculty members bring valuable insights and expertise back to our program and students, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared to meet the evolving needs of patients and the healthcare system.
