About the Cover: Acclaimed local artist Eileen Dorsey, right, produced an on-the-spot painting appropriately titled “Sesquicentennial Gala for Ursuline College” during the event of the same name. The custom painting was created live during the 150th celebration held last April at the Cleveland Museum of Art. As part of the celebration, guests were asked to join a video to toast the College’s next 150 years. In our Honor Roll of Generosity, you’ll find that toast as a way of thanking you for your support during this special year and in the years ahead.

A Postponed Passion Play & Pilgrimage Realized
Thanks to a little bit of faith and perseverance, Ursuline College travelers turned the postponed kick-off to Ursuline College’s 150th anniversary into its grand finale. Share their journey through biblical expressions and sacred spaces.
Letter from the President
Dear Friends,
Thanks to COVID-19 pandemic, our yearlong celebration of Ursuline’s sesquicentennial lasted a joyful 18 months. It culminated last April at a sold-out gala in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Many people talked there about Ursuline College as 150 years old, but I prefer to think of Ursuline as 150 years young.
I say this because we continue to find innovative ways to serve the world, new ways to promote a more inclusive, global perspective. One notable example was our community-wide Juneteenth celebration, co-sponsored with our hometown of Pepper Pike. Festivities included “Juneteenth:
The Freedom and Responsibility Exhibition” in the Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery, featuring 10 Northeast Ohio artists.
This forward trajectory adds to the quality of our value-based curricula, affirmed by the Higher Learning Commission, which has reaccredited the College for a full ten years, and the National League for Nursing, which has named our nationally ranked Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions a National Center of Excellence in Nursing Education.
As we grow in mind and spirit, we honor our Catholic and Ursuline heritage. We marked our 150 years with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. John the Evangelist
Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD, ’70 has lead Ursuline College since 2015. One of her favorite times of year is late summer when new students arrive. Left, she joins the festivities during Orientation Week.
Cathedral. On campus, we hosted the Most Reverend Edward Malesic, the twelfth bishop of Cleveland, for a visit with students, faculty, staff, and trustees.
But what truly keeps Ursuline College young is the people who grace our campus and our lives.
Fall of 2021 brought the largest incoming classes in the last decade, and at the May 2022 Commencement 373 graduates joined the ranks of Ursuline graduates. Supporting them were
alumnae/i and friends like you who gave a record $1.7 million to our annual fund. Along with our dedicated faculty and staff, you breathe life into our mission of service, leadership, and professional excellence.
Our mission never grows old, no matter how many years we commemorate. We continue to transform our students by—to paraphrase St. Angela Merici—putting our whole souls into this enterprise and rejoicing!
With faith, hope and gratitude,
Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD ’73 President
Bishop Malesic shares a laugh and a smile with student leaders while they examine the Ursuline College charter from 1871.
Cleveland’s New Bishop Visits Campus
On October 6, 2021, the Most Reverend Edward C. Malesic, the 12th bishop of Cleveland, accepted our invitation to visit Ursuline College, the oldest Catholic college in his diocese after the Saint Mary Seminary.
During his visit, Bishop Malesic sat down with a group of student leaders to learn why they chose Ursuline. He offered words of encouragement for them to pursue their passions as he enthusiastically posed for “selfies.” The group also had the rare opportunity to view the College’s original charter from 1871 as part of its 150th anniversary.
“Seeing the school’s charter was a marvelous experience,” states now-senior Melanie Rakoczy. “Witnessing the college’s first stepping stone
represents the legacy that our founding Sisters left behind. A legacy that lives on to this day.”
That evening, Bishop Malesic attended a reception in the Besse Library Learning Commons, where faculty, staff, and trustees had the opportunity to meet Cleveland’s new bishop.
Ursuline College traces its roots to the first bishop of the diocese, Bishop Amadeus Rappe, who in 1850 asked the Ursulines from Boulogne-sur-Mer in France to establish Catholic schools in the city. Mother Mary of the Annunciation Beaumont, one of those who made the journey to Cleveland, founded the College that bears the congregation’s name.

Strong Bodies & Stronger Minds
The Ursuline Arrows celebrated the College’s 150th anniversary in style by demonstrating why they are called scholar-athletes. The Athletic Department’s overall grade point average (GPA) was 3.48 or close to an A- for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Among these academic all-stars were members of the Ursuline basketball team with the second highest GPA in all of the NCAA Division II women’s basketball. In addition, Lucille Petkac won the Elite 25 Award for women’s golf, a recognition awarded to the athlete with the highest GPA in their respective sport in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Ninety-four Arrows were also honored by the G-MAC as Academic All-Conference Athletes.
At the same time, eight members of the softball team-- Sara Fessler, Alyssa Baratta, Tara Backherms, Kristin Kopp, Nicole Rawlings, and
Kiley Gallagher—were heralded for their athletic achievements and named G-MAC All-Conference team athletes for their 2022 season. Rising cross country star Emma Esteves won the G-MAC Freshman of the Year in her sport.
The players on the field and in the classroom weren’t the only ones winning accolades. Athletic Director Cindy McKnight and Ursuline President Emerita Sr. Diana Stano received G-MAC Distinguished Founders Awards for their dedication and service as founding members for the conference.
In accepting the award, Sr. Diana said, “I hope we continue to be institutions and a conference of very strong values and integrity, because that’s what is needed in the world today.”
Ursuline Arrows are doing their part for the College’s next 150 years.
A Celebration of Freedom and Community
With Juneteenth declared a federal national holiday a year earlier, Ursuline College partnered with the City of Pepper Pike to co-host its first familyfriendly Juneteenth Celebration on June 18, 2022. The free event invited the public to campus for a collective immersion experience featuring live music by Ikembe and The Cover Girls, storytelling, a drumming circle, face painting, local vendors, food, and an art-making station.
“Ursuline College collaborated with the City of Pepper Pike to celebrate and educate about Juneteenth by coming together as a community,” said Yolanda King, assistant dean for diversity. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, when Union Army troops reached Texas to deliver the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865.
Pepper Pike Mayor Richard Bain added, “We were very proud to host with Ursuline College the celebration of this important new federal holiday.”
One of the many highlights of the celebration was the opening of “Juneteenth: The Freedom and Responsibility Exhibition” in Ursuline’s Florence

O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery. This moving collection of fine art included powerful works by 10 Northeast Ohio artists.
“The show created a stunning visual dialogue recognizing racial and social inequities in our region and invited residents and visitors to participate in shaping our community’s future,” said Anna Arnold, director of the gallery and curator of the show.
Approximately 400 people attended the celebration and exhibition, which were supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Additional funding was provided by the City of Pepper Pike. The city has already agreed to partner again with the College for the next celebration, scheduled for Saturday June 17, 2023. The program will feature another Juneteenththemed art show as well.
“Ursuline College is proud of the rich diversity of our student body,” states Ursuline College President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD. “I’m glad that we can come together with our students, our alumnae, and our neighbors to commemorate this important date in American history.”
A Postponed Passion Play & Pilgrimage Realized
Almost every decade for four hundred years, the people of Oberammergau, Germany, have performed the Passion play, the Gospel story of the passion and death of Jesus.
This world-renowned biblical reenactment traces its roots to a solemn vow made by villagers to God for sparing the tiny hamlet during a 16th-century outbreak of bubonic plague. In an ironic twist of fate, the 2020 production consisting of 110 fivehour performances with over 2,000 people including actors, musicians, stage technicians, and others--all residents of the town--was cancelled due to another pandemic: COVID-19.
Among those impacted were a small group of Ursuline College travelers who were to be audience members as part of summer 2020 tour of Germany’s memorable holy and secular sites. The tour was intended to be the kickoff of the College’s 150th anniversary celebration. Instead, it extended the celebration into the summer of 2022,

when many travel restrictions were lifted and the play was rescheduled, serving as the finale of our sesquicentennial.
Ursuline sister, St John College graduate, and College trustee Sister Gretchen Rodenfels, OSU, ’70 SJC, joined the group of travelers. “The unique location and the involvement of 2,000 of the local inhabitants made the familiar story come alive in new ways in the hearts and minds of the audience,” said the former president of Beaumont School.
Besides Oberammergau, the group also visited Trier, Strasbourg, Constance, Fussen, and Munich, as well as Cologne, home of the Basilica of Saint Ursula. This basilica was built on the ruins of a Roman cemetery, where according to legend, the virgin martyrs associated with Saint Ursula were buried.
The basilica visit was of special significance to Sr. Gretchen and her two fellow Ursuline Sisters on the trip, Ursuline President Sr. Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD ’73 and Ursuline Director of Mission Sr. Virginia DeVinne, OSU ’72.
“Besides bringing insight into the early history of our patroness and of our community’s development,” Sr. Gretchen explained, “the trip was truly one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”
Perfect for a year filled with once-in-a-lifetime celebrations for Ursuline College.

College Reaccredited through 2032
During the 2021-2022 academic year, Ursuline College underwent an extensive review process to renew its Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accreditation. Institutional accreditation validates the quality of an institution, from its mission to its academic programs, from its governance and administration to its financial health, and more. It ensures the institution has satisfied all federal compliance requirements, a condition necessary to enable the College to award federal financial aid to students.
An April visit by an on-site review team from HLC was the culmination of more than a year of preparation. This campuswide self-examination included assessments of student learning and institutional effectiveness combined with summaries of initiatives from the past decade and plans for the future, to present a multidimensional picture of the College today.
Among the highlights of results from HLC, reviewers found that Ursuline College has a clear mission that guides its operations and a strong commitment to the success of its students, with particular attention to diversity and community engagement. The visiting team noted that the College regularly analyzes data and uses data in strategic ways to make informed decisions for its future. The team concluded that the College met every component of all 5 criteria required in the evaluation.
“The success of our HLC reaccreditation reflects the deep commitment of the College’s to our students and their continued success,” explains Kathryn LaFontana, PhD, vice president for academic affairs. “I’m very grateful for the hard work of the faculty and staff during the accreditation process.” The College will be reviewed again in 2031-2032 academic year.

Still Teaching: Jo Ann Lane ’62
Jo Ann Doller arrived at Ursuline College in the late 1950s as a member of the “Sputnik Class.” Eleven of her classmates were enrolled as biology majors, like her, and another 12 in chemistry. The former high school biology teacher explained, “We were part of a
push by the federal government for better science education which included grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for teachers to earn master’s degrees.”
After graduation, Doller took advantage of the NSF program. She worked on her master’s degree at Duke University during summer breaks from her first teaching job at Collinwood High School. At Collinwood, she met a fellow teacher, John Lane. Almost 60 years later, the couple have two sons, John Thomas and Joseph, plus seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. John Thomas is better known as Father Lane, the pastor of St. Paschal Baylon in Highland Heights.
Her teaching career took her to the Hebrew Academy, St. John College, and Beaumont School. She eventually joined the all-boy St. Ignatius High School in 1979 as one of only a few female teachers. Lane noted, “My first year was a challenge. I had to learn how to handle a room of sophomore boys after teaching mostly girls.” She managed the transition well and retired from St. Ignatius 25 years later.
She always remained close to her Ursuline roots as a member and eventual president of the Ursuline Alumnae/i Board. She’s given to the College’s Annual Fund every year since the mid-1980s and earned the College’s Crystal Award in 2017 for her dedication and support. “I received a scholarship for half of my Ursuline tuition and was the first in my family to go to college,” she explained. “I want to ensure other students have the same opportunities I had at Ursuline.”
A valuable lesson for all.

Saint John College
St. John College traces its roots to 1928 focusing on educating teachers. In 1947, it added a bachelor’s degree in nursing to its offerings. When St. John closed its doors, it entrusted Ursuline College to continue its legacy of nursing excellence—a tradition that is upheld today. We deeply appreciate the continued support of the St. John College graduates.

Financial Summary
A look at the fiscal year spanning July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022. Revenue
Like most colleges and universities across the country, Ursuline College faced numerous obstacles from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic during the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Despite these challenges, the College maintained a strong financial position. Below are several highlights from the Audited Financial Statements for year ended June 30, 2022:
• The core revenue sources of the College continued to be tuition, fees, and room and board, representing 69% of total unrestricted revenue.
• The College’s 150th anniversary generated a banner year in gifts and commitments including more than $220,000 from the sold-out Sesquicentennial Gala at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
• After experiencing years of strong investment performance, the College’s portfolio declined, as was experienced in the overall market; however, the College hopes to recover unrealized losses as markets strengthen in the future.
• Total assets remained strong at more than $94 million, despite the investment value loss.
• More than 84% of the total $28.9 million spent directly supported students through instruction, academic support, and other services.
As in years past as well as those in the future, the College deeply appreciated the dedication of our many donors and members of the investment, finance, and development committees of the Board of Trustees, who give generously of their time, talents, and treasures to benefit the Ursuline College community.

Statement of Nondiscrimination
Ursuline College strives to provide an environment that promotes the worth and dignity of each individual. The College supports the principle of diversity and believes it is the responsibility of every member of the Ursuline College community to conduct themselves professionally at all times and to cooperate in maintaining a work and academic environment free from unlawful harassment and discrimination. Accordingly, Ursuline College prohibits harassment and discrimination on the basis of certain characteristics, including race, color, national origin, religion, age, ancestry, sex, pregnancy, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, genetic information, military or veteran status, or any other basis prohibited by federal, state, or local laws. These characteristics are also referred to as a person’s “Protected Status” or “Protected Class.” The College does not tolerate conduct that violates this policy and makes
every effort to maintain a work and academic environment free from unlawful harassment and discrimination. The College responds to harassment and discrimination complaints with measures designed to immediately stop and eliminate the prohibited conduct, prevent the recurrence of the prohibited conduct, and remediate any adverse effects of such conduct on campus or in College-related programs or activities. Thus, all forms of prohibited conduct under this policy are considered serious offenses, and violations will result in discipline, up to and including possible suspension, expulsion, dismissal, termination, or removal and exclusion from the College.
