A Season of Change: On June 21, 2024, the Ursuline College Board of Trustees announced David A. King, EdD, as the College’s 18th president, effective July 1, 2024. He succeeds Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD, who retired at the end of the 2023-24 academic year. The first layperson and male to preside over the historically women’s Catholic college, King was president of Malone University for more than 10 years. Previously he spent 20 years at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania, in leadership roles in human resources, fundraising, and eventually as provost. His complete biography can be found on https://www.ursuline.edu/inside-ursuline/leadership/office-of-the-president.
Letter from the President
Dear Members of the Ursuline College Community,
In the spirit of a Season of Change for Ursuline College, I write my first annual report letter as president. Like the deep roots of our towering trees, a remarkable legacy of leadership and service has anchored our institution since 1871. The spring of 2024 marked a season of discovery, when as a candidate for the presidency I witnessed the vibrant spirit of our faculty nurturing minds, our students blossoming with possibility, and our alumni and trustees standing strong like evergreens in their support.
The warmth of your welcome has embraced both me and my presidential partner, my wife Winnie, who shares my deep commitment to nurturing this extraordinary community. Through my cherished relationships with Sr. Diana Stano and Sr. Christine De Vinne during my time at Malone University, I came to understand the profound beauty of the Ursuline tradition. Their mentorship planted seeds of wisdom that continue to grow.
St. Angela's words resonate through the seasons of our history: "If, according to the times and circumstances, the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do it prudently and with good advice." Like the natural rhythm of seasons, change arrives with purpose. Our Board of Trustees has thoughtfully cultivated a path that will sustain and strengthen our roots while allowing new growth to flourish. Our heritage remains our foundation, unchanging as the earth beneath our feet.
Our partnership with Gannon University emerges as a season of renewal. This collaboration, allows us to intertwine our strengths while preserving the unique essence of each institution. Together, we will cultivate expanded opportunities for our students while ensuring our garden continues to thrive for generations to come.
I understand that seasons of change can stir the winds of uncertainty. Yet just as spring follows winter, this partnership promises new life and growth while preserving the heart of Ursuline – our nurturing community, our dedication to personal growth, and our commitment to sending forth graduates who plant seeds of positive change throughout society.
As we tend this garden together, your voices will help shape the landscape of our future. In the coming year, every member of our community – faculty, staff, students, and alumni – will have opportunities to contribute to this flourishing partnership. Your wisdom will help us cultivate success.
My heart brims with gratitude for the Board of Trustees' careful stewardship, our faculty and staff's tireless cultivation of minds and spirits, our students' fresh energy and creativity, and our alumni's enduring commitment. Together, we are nurturing not just the preservation of Ursuline College, but its continual renewal as we grow in our second century and beyond.
With deep appreciation and hope,
David A. King, EdD President
Sister Christine De Vinne, PhD, OSU, announces her retirement as Ursuline College's 17th president
The academic year started off with Ursuline College President Sister Christine De Vinne, PhD, OSU, announcing that this would be her final year at the College’s helm.
“It’s been an honor to serve Ursuline College–my beloved alma mater–as president,” stated De Vinne, better known on campus as Sister Chris, who celebrated her 50th college reunion here with her Ursuline Class of 1973 a month after the announcement. “The timing is right for me to relinquish my keys to a new president, ready to lead our incredible faculty and staff and build on the momentum of their accomplishments.”
The member of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland continued, “Our undergraduate enrollment has rebounded to pre-pandemic growth levels. We’ve created new in-demand graduate degrees to meet the area’s workforce needs, including a physician assistant program, a nurse anesthetist program in our Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, and a re-imagined MBA for online learners. Our graduates
go on to serve Northeast Ohio as the region’s most dedicated nurses, entrepreneurs, educators, artists, and scientists.”
De Vinne was appointed president in July 2015, after 14 years as a faculty member, then dean, at Ursuline. She also served five years as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Notre Dame of Maryland University. During her time as president, the College increased undergraduate student retention, launched a Student Success Center, renovated the Dauby Science Center, and opened the Besse Library Learning Commons.
It was named the #1 college in the nation for student upward social mobility in a study by the American Enterprise Institute. The National League of Nursing (NLN) named Ursuline College a Center of Excellence for Nursing Education. The College also initiated an Anisfield-Wolf Faculty Fellowship in partnership with the Cleveland Foundation and launched its annual Juneteenth Celebration in collaboration with the city of Pepper Pike.
Sister Chris is seen (1) presiding over her last graduation ceremony, (2) admiring some of the decorations at her 50th reunion luncheon (3) and sharing a moment with a family at the College’s Juneteenth Celebration.
“Sr. Christine has driven the College forward under two strategic plans, undeterred even by a global pandemic,” said John “Jack” M. Newman, Jr., past Chair of the College’s Board of Trustees. “Under her leadership, the College has carried out its mission in new and transformative ways. She has left an indelible mark on this campus.”
He added, “I am grateful that we have had the opportunity to serve Ursuline College together and appreciate that she has created a dynamic launching pad for her successor.”
After her announcement the College immediately launched a search to identify a new president with a committee led by current Board Chair Teri Corletzi, ’90. “A little over a year ago, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of Ursuline College,” said Corletzi. “Sister Chris has positioned Ursuline and its new president to be ready for our next century of service to Northeast Ohio.”
Founded in 1871, Ursuline College today serves a diverse population from across Northeast Ohio and beyond, many of its students the first in their families to seek a degree. “The College is proud of its role in Catholic higher education and grateful to the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland for their sponsorship and support,” said Sister Chris. “The commitment of the College’s leadership and the whole campus community will ensure that our 18th president begins a new era from a strength rooted in pride and history.”
Sister Chris officially retired on June 30, 2024. After a much-deserved break, she accepted a year-long position at an Ursuline school in Poland, teaching English.

Apollo's Fire founder Jeannette Sorrell receives Women Who Light the Way Award
Ursuline College named Jeannette Sorrell, founder, artistic director, and conductor of Apollo’s Fire, as its 2024 recipient of its Women Who Light the Way award.
The event honors a woman leader of national stature who serves as an inspiration to Ursuline students and to future generations. Sorrell frequently talks about the challenges she faced in the world of classical music where only 13% of conductors are women and how her struggles and passion led her to launching Apollo’s Fire, which performs sold-out concerts around the world. The GRAMMY®winning conductor is recognized internationally as one of today’s most compelling interpreters of Baroque and Classical repertoire.
“Ms. Sorrell embodies the essence of this award: women who have risen to leadership roles in their fields to inspire future generations through their courage and determination,” stated Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD. “She has been an unstoppable force in an industry dominated by men and a role model for the next generation of women leaders.”

STUNT partners with Team IMPACT to sign 7-year-old dermatomyositis survivor
College Signing Day is special for any young athlete, but for one Northeast Ohio seven-year-old, it was the chance of a lifetime. (2) Ursuline College STUNT team partnered with Team Impact to add (3) Natalie*, who lives with juvenile dermatomyositis, to its roster in a special signing ceremony. As a team member, Natalie joined in practices and games. She will have UC STUNT team gear and uniforms like the student-athletes. While she did not actually compete or do drills, she was on the sidelines with them and joined in other team bonding activities throughout the year.

The Breen School Blazes New Trails in Healthcare Education Excellence
The Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions continued to its legacy of innovating the future of health care.
The Breen School welcomed its inaugural cohort of 25 students to the new Nurse Anesthesia track within its BSN-to-DNP program after securing accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). This dynamic 36-month online program represents a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Somnia Nurse Anesthesia Program, LLC (SNAP).
Kathleen Boylan Novak '88 & The Novak Family
Margaret Solar & Donald Gorman and The Gorman Family
Responding to healthcare workforce demands, The Breen School expanded its online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program with five new options, creating flexibility for today's busy professionals. Students can customize their educational journey through in-person or online studies, or blend of both. The Breen School also launched an online post-graduate certificate with a Mental Health Nursing track alongside fully online dual degree options for MSN/MBA and DNP/MBA.
Breen also introduced several forward-thinking programs, including a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care, a flexible part-time pathway for the high-demand Second Degree Accelerated Program (SDAP), and a specialized trauma-informed care certificate program cross-listed with Counseling and Art Therapy (CAT). The Physician's Assistant Program welcomed its second cohort of 30 students, further cementing The Breen School's reputation for excellence.
Embracing cutting-edge technology, The Breen School transformed its Health Resource and Simulation Center with two state-of-theart campus facilities featuring completely modernized simulation equipment. It also implemented a comprehensive competency based RQI system for pre-licensure students, ensuring graduates enter the field with exceptional clinical readiness.
Outside the classroom, The Breen School's faculty continued to shape the future of health care through service and leadership on regulatory boards and professional organizations. Dean Patricia A. Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN exemplified this commitment during her second year as chair of the National League for Nursing (NLN) and with her appointment to the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Education Experts Advisory Committee.
Dr. Sharpnack completed her second year as NLN chair.

Trustee of the Year
John M. “Jack” Newman, Jr., an Ursuline College 29-year trustee including 14 years as board chair, was named the 2024 Earl F. Morris Trustee Award recipient from the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC).
The award is designed to recognize current trustees of OFIC member colleges and universities who have demonstrated commitment and service above and beyond the norm to the guidance and betterment of the institution and its students.
Sister Christine De Vinne, PhD, OSU noted, “Without fanfare, without headlines, he has dedicated 30-plus years of his life and career to making a difference for our students.”
The Trustee Award was accompanied by the OFIC Staff Scholarship for a deserving student at the award recipient’s institution. (1) Alivia Rovder, a junior studying art therapy, was also present to receive the scholarship.
US Dept of Education awards $2.24 million grant to strengthen at-risk student services
Ursuline College was awarded
$2,248,276 over five years from the U.S. Department of Education through its Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP).
The grant called Project UPWARD (Ursuline Progressing With Actionable Resources and Data) builds on the College’s success in supporting at-risk, low-income students with additional services and programs as well as better access to data for decision-making.
Kathryn LaFontana, PhD, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, and grant project director states, “Ursuline College has a great track record of supporting first-generation and low-income students with wrap-around services that keep them on track to persist and obtain their degrees.”
She continues, “Project UPWARD helps us to continue and expand our ability to help these students
feel that they belong here. They learn to be advocates for themselves and their education, adding more value to their academic experience.”
Specifically, the grant will fully fund a new retention management system as well as training and professional development opportunities to assist faculty and staff in promoting holistic, personal, and proactive advising. At the same time, the grant adds new staff positions to support student writing and the establishment of living-learning communities or LLCs to promote a sense of belonging for resident and commuter students with similar academic interests.
The grant will also fund an Office of New Programs and Partnerships to facilitate new learning opportunities and collaborations as well as expand the college’s portfolio of academic offerings.
Dr. LaFontana explains, “Simply stated, this grant will help increase the number of students who attend Ursuline College, finish their degrees, and launch exciting careers.”
2023 - 24
Financial Summary
A look at the fiscal year spanning July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024.
The evolution of American higher education continued in the 2023-24 academic year as colleges and universities, including Ursuline, addressed the challenges of declining birth rates, fewer traditional students choosing college, and changing modalities of learning. With thoughtful budgeting and planning, Ursuline College sustained a strong financial position as it explored possible partnerships and new structures.
Below are several highlights from the Audited Financial Statements for year ending June 30, 2024:
• The College’s main revenue sources of tuition, fees, and auxiliary enterprises including room and board represent 63% of the College’s income.
• The College’s investment portfolio continues to perform well with a slight drop to $48.89 million from $50.15 million.
• Total assets were just over $93.2 million, down slightly by $0.4 million from the previous year.
• Almost 86% of the College’s expenses are spent directly to support students through instruction, academic support, and other services.
Ursuline College deeply appreciates the continued generosity of our many donors and volunteers who support our mission of education to transform students for service, leadership, and professional excellence. We also deeply appreciate the gift of time, treasure, and expertise by the members of the Board of Trustees.
