BEHIND THE SCENES

The theme of UR’s new 30-second television spot is “What could you do at Richmond?”

Three students — basketball player and graduate student Matt Grace, ’22, rugby player Jocelyn Hernandez, ’23, and race car driver Ally Raphael, ’25 — show possible answers through footage combining their academic and athletic interests.

“It’s a celebration of our exceptional students,” said Megan Condict, director of multimedia in UR’s communications division.

“When you come to Richmond, you have an opportunity to see how far you can go, not just in academics but as a person.” Use the QR code to see the spot.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Quiet moments

A couple of months ago, the managing editor of UR Now, Paul Heltzel, sent an inquiry around the office: What are our favorite campus spots for taking a quiet break? He was getting ideas for a photo essay he expects to run at exam time.

It was a very Richmond question. This campus is a beautiful place to be, whether you are here to study or work or just visit. I often take walks during lunch breaks, and I schedule my interviews in other people’s offices whenever possible to add extra minutes outside. We often think of getting out in the wilderness when we think of being in nature — and that can be spectacular (see Page 32) — but even brief moments in fresh air are restorative. On some walks on campus, I see great blue herons and maybe a

turtle in the lake. On others, it’s just squirrels and chirping birds in the distance that I can’t identify. But it always does me good. I was one of the early responders to Paul’s email, offering the walled garden at the end of Keller Hall, among other places. His list took on life as others suggested favorites. I won’t play spoiler here. You can look for UR Now’s photo essay at the end of the semester. The point is that the hard part wasn’t thinking of great spots. The hard part is narrowing them down.

Paul’s question also got at something significant about Richmond strategic direction. The things on our to-do lists (exams, next week’s course plan, this column) remain important, but we also increasingly recognize the value of maintaining our well-being while doing them. Of course, faculty and staff have long cared deeply about the students on campus. The difference is that in recent years this care has risen as one of the highest priorities of the institution. It currently sits alongside things like academic excellence, access and affordability, and other Guiding Lights, five in total, identified by President Kevin F. Hallock.

Which brings us back to Paul’s list. Generations, in many cases, have found each of its spots a beautiful, welcome break from daily pressures and demands that teenage and early 20-something students worry about. That said, we’ve shifted from seeing concern for well-being as nice to seeing it as necessary. Luckily for students and all of us at Richmond, this calming place offers options and a culture that encourages taking advantage of them. Here, in the quiet of the office, having already responded to Paul’s note and with most of a day’s work behind me, I am already thinking I’m overdue for a walk.

Editor’s note: Spiders and others reacted with a lively discussion on LinkedIn to English professor Elisabeth Gruner’s essay “Ungrading” [Autumn 2022]. In it, she described her decision to stop putting letter grades on individual assignments to better promote student learning. Here is a bit of what they said:

1000% … “One student, a senior, thanked me for treating them like adults.” … This “ungrading” process sounds so much closer to what students might experience when producing work at jobs in the future and participating in performance review processes. The point is to produce your best work and receive mentorship on getting there.

Another stupid and “coddling” policy which does not prepare youth for real world experiences where performance and effort does matter to be successful. The whole idea that grading is inequitable because some students in her class don’t have the same “educational privilege” as other students is ridiculous. They got into U of R — that should be educational privilege enough for a literature class. This coddling may make students “feel” better; however, it ill prepares them for the real world that will judge them on performance, not feelings.

Really good wisdom in here about how the process of learning actually works. Personally, my business school used a variant of ungrading that fundamentally transformed what could have been an incredibly competitive and dysfunctional learning environment into one that was collaborative and enabled true learning and mastery.

A great question to ask

The many ways we support students set Richmond apart. But we should always ask, “How can we do better?”

My parents always encouraged me to ask questions and work hard. I had several jobs growing up — from delivering newspapers to picking cucumbers and tobacco to operating a forklift in a lumberyard. These experiences opened a few doors for me and opened my mind to questions about how people are paid and why they earn what they earn. Before graduating from high school, I knew I wanted to become an economist. Economists think about maximizing all sorts of things. In my role as president at Richmond, I think about how we can help our students make the most of their time here and beyond.

At its best, the college experience can enhance students’ ability to engage in the world by opening their minds to continued learning and preparing them to lead more fulfilling and resilient lives. When our students graduate, I hope they’ve opened doors they couldn’t have imagined were even doors. I hope they’ve developed a strong educational grounding and deep knowledge in a field of interest — and that they’re better prepared to lead lives of purpose.

At Richmond, our academic recipe for

“ We must continue to ask how we can help open doors and minds to more expansive futures.”

engaging students is rooted in teaching and mentoring relationships.

As teachers, we help students establish a foundation in communications, writing, research, and critical thinking skills; refine their knowledge in specific areas; and broaden their perspectives. Last semester, I dipped my toe into the teaching pool at Richmond, offering a First Year Seminar on compensation to 16 new Spiders. Students proposed theories and listened to one another as we discussed important topics, like how the gender pay gap has evolved in the U.S., how things differ internationally, what

this means, and what to do about it.

As mentors, we offer individualized support for students to engage in learning and growth beyond the classroom. Take senior Harry Dang, for example, who has conducted research with chemistry professor Dr. Mike Leopold for three consecutive years. With Dr. Leopold’s mentorship and funding from the Richmond Guarantee, Harry’s contributing to the development of cost-effective sensors to screen for explosives, drugs, and disease biochemicals. Harry’s research has earned him two national awards, and he is the first author of two peer-reviewed publications. This is just one example among many. At our annual A&S Student Symposium, undergraduates across nearly 30 disciplines will present faculty-mentored work through poster sessions, performances, and art exhibits. I loved the 2022 Symposium and am counting the days until April 14.

As we seek to make Richmond more remarkable, we must continue to ask how we can help open doors and minds to more expansive futures and how we can equip our students to engage in meaningful learning now and for the rest of their lives. I am excited about our path ahead, and I look forward to our work together.

With the Richmond Guarantee, every undergraduate student is eligible to receive a fellowship of up to $5,000 for an unpaid or underpaid summer internship or faculty-mentored research project. For more information, go to guarantee. richmond.edu.

A PROVOST?

Legro moderated the panel because he is an expert on international affairs. He also happens to be UR’s provost, a position often unfamiliar to people outside of academia.

The provost is the institution’s chief academic officer.

Legro oversees the five schools, the library, faculty development, and other areas at

the core of UR’s academic mission.

Closer connections

In October, UR played host as the U.S. Department of State began rolling out a new initiative focused on developing closer international ties at state, city, and other levels below national governments and world leaders. The panel discussion was also the debut event for the U.S.’s first-ever special representative for subnational diplomacy.

During the event in the Robins School of Business, Nina Hachigian, the new ambassador, called subnational diplomacy “foreign policy for the middle class.” Cities and states have a lot of soft power, she noted, and can serve as a ballast for strained national relationships during troubled times.

COVID-19, cyberattacks, climate change-driven weather disasters, and other transnational, global challenges

“affect people in places,” she said.

“Learning from mayors and governors about how they’re coping with these challenges and what they’re seeing — we really want to bring their views into the creation of our foreign policy on these tough challenges.”

The State Department’s effort to

strengthen its bonds with cities and states is a welcome development, said Jenna Ben-Yehuda, president and CEO of the Truman Center for National Policy. It’s time to tap into “all of the richness American cities have to offer,” she said. “Folks face a lot of the same challenges.”

Seated just to their right was one of those mayors, Richmond’s Levar Stoney, who stressed the importance of direct foreign investment for local economies and the role of an inclusive, welcoming environment in attracting it.

The panel was moderated by political scientist Jeffrey Legro, UR’s provost and an expert in international affairs. He noted that UR students participate in civic engagement and international education.

“We’re trying to connect those two to give students a better understanding that actually what they’re seeing when they go abroad are the issues and challenges of their local community,” he said. “If you’re working on programs here locally, there’s a lot to understand and learn from by looking at international examples.”

PHILANTHROPY

Top honor

In January, the university awarded its highest honor, the Paragon Medal, to Marcus Weinstein, R’49 and H’02. The award honors his enduring legacy of leadership and philanthropy as well as his advocacy for and support of both the university and broader region.

Gifts from Weinstein, his wife, Carole, W’75, G’77, and H’04, and their family led to the creation of the Carole Weinstein International Center, the Weinstein Center for Recreation, and Weinstein Hall. They have also supported endowed professorships, scholarships, and programming opportunities, including the annual Weinstein-Rosenthal Forum and other chaplaincy initiatives.

Marcus Weinstein said he owes his philosophy on education, service, and philanthropy to his mother. “By sharing what I have with other people, I feel like I am helping to make the world a better place and making my mother proud,” he said.

Weinstein is the second person to receive the medal. The first was E. Claiborne Robins, R’31 and H’60, in 1986.

MENTORSHIP

More student research

For the sixth time since 2006, the university has received a prestigious Beckman Scholars grant for faculty-mentored student research. The three-year, $156,000 grant will support six student research scholarships over three years.

“This grant support will allow six of our most talented students an immersive research experience and will help set their careers in motion,” said Carol Parish, associate provost and Floyd D. and Elisabeth S. Gottwald Professor of Chemistry. Richmond is one of 14 total and only four primarily undergraduate schools to receive funding from the Beckman Foundation this year.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

Innovative approach

The University of Richmond claimed two top-five spots in the latest “Open Doors Report” by the Institute of International Education, a reflection of its innovative problem-solving despite the pandemic.

Richmond ranked No. 5 overall and No. 2 for short-term study abroad programs based on numbers from the 2020–21 academic year, when the pandemic’s impact on global mobility was at its height. Forty-five students participated in study abroad programming that year.

Short-term abroad programs typically last from one to three weeks, are connected to a class, and take place during one of the breaks during the academic year. These short-term programs provide real-world illustrations of points made in class and provide

additional opportunities to study abroad outside of the full semester or year options.

The university also earned high marks for international students. For 2021–22, UR ranked 12th for total number of international students. UR students call more than 75 countries home.

“UR remaining nationally ranked for study abroad during the pandemic reflects the hard work of our intrepid students and the international education team,” said Martha Merritt, dean of international education. “We also developed options for 54 international students who were unable to travel to Richmond so that they could study in their own country, as well as maintain contact with UR faculty and staff during this difficult period.”

IN THE NEWS

When media cover news and events, they come to Richmond for perspective and expertise. Here’s a sample of recent stories that put the university in the news:

SANDRA PEART, dean of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, spoke about how unique majors help universities stand out.

“It’s important to emphasize what’s different” in the competitive higher education marketplace, she said.

Biology professor JONATHAN RICHARDSON commented on a book called Pests. “There’s also some irony in how we view pests,” he said. “Other species would certainly characterize Homo sapiens as having some of the same traits that mark pests as pests.”

Journalism professor KAREN MASTERSON authored a piece about how the complex relationship between Liberia and the U.S. is shaping West Fargo, North Dakota. “No other African nationals can make such a clear claim to their American ties,” she writes. “The United States has always had a strong hand in the flow of people, ideas, and even violence in Liberia.”

SHORT-TERM?

For a variety of reasons, not every student can study abroad for a semester. Shortterm study abroad provides a great alternative. For an example, see the story on Page 12 about a visit to Germany by an American studies class.

Law professor JULIE MCCONNELL spoke about the legal questions raised by the shooting of a Newport News, Virginia, teacher by a 6-year-old student. Because of his age, “he just doesn’t have the intellectual capacity to even understand how to form the intent to commit a crime like this,” she said.

Political science professor ERNEST MCGOWEN spoke about unusual tactics increasingly being used by climate change activists. “As soon as I glue myself to the basketball court, I make the evening news or USA Today,” he said, “and then they have to tell why I glued myself to the floor.”

BOOKS

Looking for a thoughtful read for the spring or summer? Consider these recent books by UR faculty that draw insight from the past.

A forgotten attack

MANAGEMENT

In American Caliph, journalism professor Shahan Mufti revisits a 1977 two-day siege in Washington, D.C., by dozens of gunmen and takes up the question of why the attack is little remembered today. Publishers Weekly named it one of the best nonfiction books of 2022, and it received favorable reviews in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, among others.

NEW MASTER’S The Robins School of Business announced it will launch a one-year Master of Science in Management degree in July. The program is designed to give non-business majors a deeper understanding of business fundamentals as they prepare for roles in the private, government, and not-for-profit sectors. More information is available at msm. richmond.edu.

Shaketh, not stirreth

James Bond may be our model of English spycraft, but for its origins, leadership studies professor and Shakespeare expert Kristin Bezio looks back centuries. In The Eye of the Crown, she traces the rise of spies in early modern England as various majesties’ governments sought advantage during a period of conflict. Secret codes and shadowy figures populate her densely researched book alongside familiar names like Elizabeth I and playwright-spy Christopher Marlowe.

Grim lessons

MCDOWELL INSTITUTE

Socratic growth

A UR fellowship program described by one former fellow as “the way college should be” doubled its capacity this year, inviting more students to engage with ideas from across the ideological spectrum.

They also attended lectures on free speech and the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In Wartime Suffering and Survival, sociology professor Jeffrey Hass examines the experience of living through the 872-day blockade of Leningrad during World War II. “Who are we when our backs are against the wall?” he asks. He considers its effects on civil, social, and family structures, often quoting from diaries and letters to illuminate the strategies and costs of survival in such desperate circumstances.

In addition to fellowships, the McDowell Institute hosts guest speakers, seminars, and conferences. Its namesake is the late Jepson professor and constitutional scholar Gary L. McDowell, continuing his commitment to exploring diverse viewpoints in ethics, law, and politics.

This year, roughly two dozen students participated in the McDowell Institute Student Fellows Program, “an intellectual space for free inquiry, thoughtful deliberation, and rigorous discussion,” said the institute’s co-directors, professors Terry Price and Dan Palazzolo. The program, an initiative of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, is designed to attract students from a broad range of political perspectives for discussions about issues raised in classical texts and their application to contemporary issues.

In the fall, they read Plato’s Apology and met at the Greek theater to conduct their own trial of Socrates.

During the spring semester, the fellows are participating in a cocurricular reading group led by professors Kevin Cherry from the political science department and Jessica Flanigan from the Jepson School. Their text is the 2021 book Rescuing Socrates. In it, author Roosevelt Montás, who emigrated from the Dominican Republic at age 12, tells the story of how texts often called the “Great Books” transformed his life as both a student and a teacher. He also argues that these texts “have the power to speak to people of all backgrounds.”

Montás is scheduled to visit campus in mid-March for a public lecture. As part of his visit, he will meet with McDowell Fellows for a small group discussion.

DIALOGUE
The number of McDowell fellows — who explore modern questions evoked by classical texts — rose.

PSYCHOLOGY A senior-year course helped Pascaline Munezero, ’22, decide on her next steps — and the ones after that.

Pascaline Munezero, ’22, knew that she wanted to study psychology at Richmond, which is why she pursued a neuroscience concentration and research in the cognitive neuroscience lab with professor Cindy Bukach. But it was a class during her last semester on trauma and resilience taught by professor Janelle Peifer that helped shift her focus.

“It completely changed whatever research I’d done,” she said. “I was like, ‘OK, that’s what I’m going to study now.”

Growing up in Rwanda in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, Munezero has seen firsthand the effects that trauma — intergenerational trauma — can have on individuals.

“Rwandans have been exposed to so much trauma, and so many people are resilient; they go past that experience,” she said. “But so many people stay under that yoke of having flashbacks haunt them every night, falling into that trap of [post-traumatic stress disorder] or even having addiction issues and stuff like that because of that trauma.”

That’s why she wanted to better understand the long-term implications and find her role in helping those in her community.

Munezero interned at the University of Rwanda and then worked as a research and content development assistant at the University of Global Health Equity after graduation. She is now in her second semester of an online master’s degree program through the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, studying psychological approaches to mental health in children and young people. The online program allows her to pursue a degree while working — and volunteering — to grow her professional experience. She hopes to continue on to a clinical psychology doctoral program, focusing her research on adverse childhood experiences, their relationship to parenting style, and the types of interventions that can be applied to stem trauma’s impact across generations.

“[Traumatic] experiences can be very detrimental, not just when you are a child, but when you grow up and are an adult,” she said. “They still follow you. They still impact you. They tend to define your trajectory in life.”

Munezero also hopes that her continued education will give her the broad perspec tive necessary for working with patients. It’s something she feels is needed more in the many areas of her country where clinical psychologists typically don’t advance be yond their undergraduate studies.

[in Rwanda] do not have the opportuni ties to continue their specialization or further their research — or be exposed to development outside their practice,” she said. “And that tends to hinder the patient experience.”

sees potential in the future to work with other clinical psychologists to better the experience of their patients.

act with mental health issues in Rwanda,” she said. “I want to encourage other mental health profession als to be more specialized so they’re better prepared to treat their patients. May be I can be one of the persons who creates platforms for such opportunities.”

DESTIGMATIZING MENTAL HEALTH

Munezero admits her college years were challenging; she took a two-year break to deal with stress-related issues. She said people struggling often have so much self-stigma that they feel others will stigmatize them, too. She felt lucky to be in a supportive community.

“There is so much access to mental health support, and so many people are not aware of that,” she said. “I try to live openly because talking about it can give hope to someone else.”

SIDE TRIP

Berlin attracts artists from across the world, and some of their most celebrated work takes the form of street art. When Ashe’s class wasn’t on or near a basketball court, it was often spending time touring some of the city’s iconic outdoor artwork, including Dmitri Vrubel’s image of socialist politicans Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker greeting each other, a work popularly known as “Fraternal Kiss.”

Black life” that drew material from, among other places, the NBA’s rule book.

On a Tuesday night just before finals last semester, a dozen sophomores were unpacking one of their newest experiences in a classroom in the Humanities Center.

Just three days earlier, they’d woken up in central Berlin at the end of a weeklong trip during Thanksgiving break. The main attraction wasn’t Checkpoint Charlie. They went to see how people in Germany play and think about basketball.

The students were participants in an American studies course called the Art of Basketball with English professor Bert Ashe. It was an SSIR seminar — Sophomore Scholars in Residence. The program combines traditional academic coursework with cocurricular components, including short-term travel, often internationally.

Before leaving for Germany, they read selections from The Norton Anthology of African American Literature, viewed the films Hoosiers and White Men Can’t Jump, and visited a museum exhibition described as “an experimental portrait of improvisatory

Their goal was understanding the harmonies and tensions between individual creativity and team play as expressed in the playing and presentation of competitive basketball, a sport long interwoven with and strongly influenced by African American culture.

“The key thing we’re exploring is how a rhythmic, improvisational Black culture has influenced the playing of basketball over the years,” Ashe said.

Part of the class also included attending Spider home games and a game at Virginia State University, a historically Black institution, to compare and contrast the playing styles and arena cultures they encountered. The trip to Germany expanded that comparative analysis with examples from a European context — a professional EuroLeague game, a night streetball tournament, and a basketball camp among them. They also met with three coaches — two white Europeans and a Black American expat.

During their first class session after the trip, they sorted through all they’d noticed. One of the first things? Clapping. As in,

the Richmond students were not in sync with when German fans clapped or didn’t. There was also no pregame national anthem and little in-game entertainment. “No kiss cam,” one of them observed.

There were also similarities. The music that played was familiar — mostly Black American artists like Jay-Z and Grandmaster Flash, “the kind of Black music white people like,” a student joked. “Crossover music,” Ashe said, diplomatically. But for the most part, it was a different game environment than what they know.

With a small sample size, they could only speculate about the reasons. “There’s a difficulty in knowing what’s normal and what’s not,” Ashe reminded them.

But the wheels were turning as they drew in more than game references. They had also noticed that Berlin’s public transportation operated largely on an honor system for payment and that Germans memorialize the most troublesome aspects of their past more visibly than Americans. They speculated about reasons for those differences, too. As with any comparative analysis, the data illuminated by one example shed light on all of them.

HUMANITIES A group of students reflects on a trip to Germany they took to learn more about American culture.

AROUND CAMPUS

“Doctor by day, rock star by night.”

BILLY APOSTOLOU, ’24 , quoted in The Collegian on his goals He is on a pre-med track and guitarist in a band called Dogpark with Richmond classmates.

Green commitment

Senior Sarah Murtaugh, a data visualization intern in the sustainability office, believes in the power of numbers.

“It’s a very transparent way of seeing the emissions we’re creating every year and the progress we’re making there,” she says.

UR’s numbers certainly said something to the Princeton Review, which ranked UR as a Top 50 Green College for the first time for “superb sustainability practices, a strong foundation in sustainability education, and a healthy quality of life for students on campus.”

Sustainability is a way of life at UR. Faculty, staff, and students go to the Spider Exchange to donate and pick up office supplies, clothing, kitchen tools, and more. Dining Services participates in Lean Path, a program that reduces food waste during

cooking. Students can commit to sustainable living through the Green Room program. Every part of campus contributes to an overall effort toward a sustainable future.

“I think that everyone needs to put a little bit of energy toward addressing [climate change] if we are going to keep our world livable,” says Murtaugh “I really think that addressing sustainability at the University of Richmond is a great way to address the issue on a small scale.”

Rob Andrejewski, director of sustainability, agrees with Murtaugh’s commitment. “My vision for this place is that anybody who comes to campus sees possibility in doing things a little bit differently,” he says.

“I just want people to see that there is a deep commitment to change.”

— Amy Ogle, ’26

LESS IS MORE

Reducing the volume of waste delivered to landfills is an important part of Richmond’s sustainability efforts. The university diverted 205,650 pounds of organic waste through composting initiatives in 2022.

A suitable feast

What happens when Spiders studying abroad can’t be home for the holidays? If you’re Elizabeth Francy Demaret, W’88, you make a second home in France for them.

This self-declared “Spider mom” invited a dozen Spiders studying in Europe to her home in Talloires, France, for Thanksgiving. Students from five study abroad programs in four countries spent the holiday together socializing, taking bike trips and, of course, eating.

That’s the tea

A beverage developed by UR student entrepreneurs may one day be coming to retailers near you.

Three students — junior Grace Clarke and seniors Sarah Edwards and Brendan Fowler — emerged as the winners of the second annual Bench Top Innovations competition. Their product is Lume, a cold-brewed iced tea that delivers “controlled energy.”

The competition is part of a yearlong interdisciplinary course in which students envision, develop, and commercialize an innovative food or beverage product. They compete as small teams during the fall semester and then rally as a class behind the competition winner in the spring to bring the product to market.

Among Virginia’s best

Two University of Richmond professors recently received Virginia’s top honor for faculty at the state’s public and private colleges and universities.

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia named management professor Jeffrey Harrison and law professor Julie McConnell recipients of its 2023 Outstanding Faculty Award. They were two of 12 recipients from among 74 nominees.

Princeton Review ranked the university as a Top 50 Green College for the first time.

Pillars of philanthropy

In December, the university’s advancement division published Pillars, a new annual report created to illustrate “how the generosity of the Spider community carries forward the promise of access and opportunity to the next generation.” The publication also represents UR’s commitment to transparency and sincere appreciation for those who give to the university through their service and support.

Highlights of the inaugural issue include profiles of scholarship donors such as Brent Clark, ’97, whose $50,000 pledge created the Fleming Scholarship in honor of his maternal grandfather. It was awarded for the first time in fall 2021 to Isaac Lee, ’24, a New Jersey native majoring in psychology and health studies. Clark said he was motivated to make the gift because a scholarship and financial aid package allowed him to graduate without debt, “and I wanted to help someone else receive the same opportunity.”

The report also includes financial information about Spider giving, its impact, and the performance of the endowment, as well as numerous student profiles showing the ways their fellow Spiders’ generosity supports their goals and changes their lives.

For web and PDF versions, go to giving. richmond.edu. On that website, you can also ensure you’re on next year’s distribution list with one simple step: joining the more than 8,000 Spider alumni who made gifts last year.

Every gift matters. As the report points out, more than $350,000 in support for students came from gifts of $100 or less last fiscal year.

COLLEGE DAYS

Pendergrass had an outstanding Spider football career. He rushed for more than 100 yards in seven games and is No. 8 for career rushing yards in the Spider record book.

Still, NFL teams overlooked him on draft day. Weeks later, he got a call from a Spider football alum about an opportunity to be in The Replacements, the film that launched his career.

Spider in Wakanda

For more than two decades, former tailback for Spider football Jasper Pendergrass Jr., ’98, has carved out a career in Hollywood as a stuntman and actor. He’s appeared in eight football films and hundreds of commercials and TV shows, including The Replacements, The Wire, and The Longest Yard. For his latest role, he helps bring to life one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, Black Panther, as a citizen of Wakanda.

“I’m in the big fight sequences, doing brawl fighting,” he said. “Being in the Black Panther movies, just the experience in itself, it’s like being part of history.”

By day, he works full time as a physical education teacher in South Central Los Angeles. He does auditions on his lunch breaks and even hosts karaoke as a side hustle.

“People who say they were never good at anything or only good at one thing, I don’t think that’s true,” he said. “Anything that you can do to

make money, you should do it. I don’t care if it’s 15 things or just one thing. You define your own success.”

Size has its advantages in his stunt work. “Like in a bar fight, if someone is thrown over the bar, it’s going to be the little guys,” he said. “I’ll be the one that’s throwing you.”

One of the many things that distinguishes the Black Panther series is the opportunities it gives female stunt performers, in keeping with its themes of female leadership. “The women are just absolutely phenomenal,” he said. “We often see men doing these stunts, but in Black Panther, it puts the females in the forefront to show that they do all this stuff, too.”

Elmer S. West Jr., R’43, will never forget the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Japanese military aircraft struck the U.S. naval base in a surprise attack on Dec. 7, 1941. The next day, a radio speaker positioned over the front door of the men’s dining hall broadcast President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s declaration of war on Imperial Japan. West, a junior at Richmond College, stood outside listening with a few hundred students.

Eighty-one years later, Pearl Harbor “symbolizes the shock of the strike and the tragedy of the ships that were sunk and the hundreds of servicemen who were killed,” said West in an interview from his home in Chesterfield County, Virginia. “It was the focal point that made it inevitable to get into World War II.”

West, who turned 100 in October, was a transfer student from Cumberland Junior College in Williamsburg, Kentucky, about 150 miles from his hometown of May’s Lick in the Bluegrass State.

Just as he had at Cumberland, West worked his way through Richmond College.

His first year, he worked three nights a week shelving books in the library and also waited tables. His senior year, he became the headwaiter, supervising 18 student workers.

He carried 20 credit hours for all but the last semester, making the dean’s list. He sang in the men’s glee club and, during his senior year, served on the honor council. “I had no social life. There was no time for one,” he recalled.

He majored in chemistry and minored in biology, planning to become a medical missionary. By the time he graduated in May 1943, West had been accepted into the Navy’s V-12 program for medical training with plans to attend Duke University. Because of the war and the pressing need for doctors, medical schools offered first-year classes starting in September and January. West would enroll in January.

In the meantime, he worked at the naval hospital in New Orleans, entering the service as an apprentice seaman and managing the blood bank. He began to question whether medical missions were his true calling and realized he wanted to serve in the chaplain training program. After a semester in medical school, he was able to change course.

Still in the Navy, West earned his master’s degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in New York and studied at the University of Chicago. During the summer of 1945, he worked as a chaplain’s intern at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and joined the crush of people in Times Square on V-J Day celebrating the end of the war that August.

West left the Navy as an ensign in 1946 and embarked on a remarkable career in ministry.

He was a highly regarded leader in the Southern Baptist Convention, holding key posts in its International Mission Board. He also served as pastor of three churches across Virginia and North Carolina, then after retirement served as interim pastor in 11 churches. In 1958, the University of Richmond awarded him an honorary doctorate of divinity.

He and his late wife, Betsy, had four children, 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-greatgrandchild.

Asked about this Spider’s secret to a life well lived, West responded: “Grace and gratitude.”

HISTORY On Dec. 7, 1941, Elmer S. West Jr. was on the Richmond campus as an undergrad. That day altered his life forever.

➤ THE GREENEST OF GREENS

Another fall highlight for Spider golf — both the men and the women — was a trip to Ireland, where they played four rounds in four days.

“The hustle was there.”

Women’s basketball coach AARON ROUSSELL praising his team after a win over Fordham Jan. 21. The team continued its upward momentum during Roussell’s fourth season with a record of 16-8 as of press time.

A 7-birdie start

Hannah Lydic has dreamed about playing competitive golf since she was 6 years old. “I’ve been wanting to play competitive rounds forever,” she said. “I was like a racehorse trying to get out of the gate.”

The first-year student from Ocean View, Delaware, came out of the gate strong, breaking the Richmond Spider women’s golf team record for lowest 18-hole score in program history at the William & Mary Fall Invitational. It included seven birdies.

“All I was thinking during each round was, ‘Trust your training,’ something my parents tell me whenever I go out to play tournament golf,” she said. “As a team, we have put in many hours in the gym and on the course. Being able to trust in all our hard work makes competing much easier.”

Lydic went on to place first in the tournament with the lowest individual tournament score of 205, 11-under par, another Spider record. The team also set a new team scoring record for a single event, and they’re only getting started.

“We’re really excited for the season and for the rest of the year,” Lydic said.

It was the third time in Spider history that a first-year has won a tournament, and Lydic is the first player to break the scoring record since 2018.

“We were all able to show up at this tournament and break the team record in our first event of the season,” she said. “It has always been my goal to play collegiate golf, and to be on a team where we can all play at a high level means the world to me.”

RUNDOWN

Milestone anniversary

Bob Black — the voice of the Spiders — celebrated his 40th anniversary calling games for the University of Richmond this season.

He first called the team’s games during the memorable 1983–84 season, when UR upset Charles Barkley’s Auburn Tigers in the NCAA Tournament. That timing led to jokes with then-coach Dick Tarrant that Black’s arrival started Richmond’s tradition of big upsets, according to WTVR, Richmond’s CBS affiliate. “Well, that’s quite a coincidence,” the story quoted Tarrant.

“That’s all I can say.”

Black is often praised for his professionalism and objectivity. His longtime broadcast partner Greg Beckwith, R’86 and G’89, said Black’s play-by-play calling style makes the broadcasts better for him as color analyst. “He’s so good, so smooth, so knowledgeable,” he told WTVR. “It just makes it so easy and so comfortable for me.”

New coach

Women’s soccer named Liverpool, England, native Adam Denton as the third head coach in program history.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to lead the women’s soccer program at the University of Richmond,” he said.

“It’s a program I’ve seen and respected from the outside as a competitor, and I’m thrilled to now be joining the Richmond Spider family.”

Denton was previously head coach at Davidson University. He led the Wildcats to a 13-3-4 season in 2022.

tionally ranked Syracuse. The Spiders play Hobart in an away game April 22, which, Derrek acknowledged, will be a little odd for him.

During the 2022 season, Lance Madonna, ’24, gave defenses headaches with his 25 goals and 12 assists. This season, opposing teams have twice the Madonnas to worry about.

Lance is joined on the 2023 team by his older brother Derrek, who transferred to the team as a graduate student. With four years of experience playing for Hobart College, Derrek helps bolster the offense of the Spiders as they move from the Southern Conference — whose championship they won last year — to the Atlantic 10, which added men’s lacrosse this year.

The league begins small with just six teams. Four of them already play other sports in the A-10: UMass, St. Bonaventure, and St. Joseph’s, plus Richmond. High Point University and Hobart will play as affiliates. Yes, that Hobart, where Derrek led the team in scoring his senior year with 33 goals, including a hat trick against na-

“I’ve never entered the stadium at Hobart on the opposing side, so that’s definitely going to be the weirdest part, I think,” he said. “I’ve got a ton of lifelong friends on that team, so it’ll be a good time.”

Derrek’s arrival at Richmond reunites the two brothers, who’ve been playing together since they were kids in their backyard. They overlapped for two seasons in high school, but when Lance came to Richmond while Derrek was at Hobart, it looked like their days playing competitive games together were over. Then the pandemic hit, the 2020 season was largely canceled, and the NCAA gave affected athletes an extra season of eligibility.

“We joked about him coming to Richmond for his fifth year,” Lance said. “When he made it happen, it was pretty cool. Our parents will be able to watch us again.”

The team ranked as high as No. 19 in preseason polls and figures to have a potent offense. In addition to the Madonna brothers, the team also returns last season’s

second-leading scorer, senior Dalton Young.

Putting up points is what each brother says the other does best. Lance describes Derrek as a scorer who shoots really well from the outside and is probably faster than opposing teams realize. Derrek says Lance is a true all-around attacker who can shoot, pass, and dodge — or fake out opponents with quick moves — with the best of them.

“You can take away one part of [Lance’s] game, but he’s always going to be able to make an impact,” Derrek says.

Derrek’s arrival in Richmond puts him in position for the one accomplishment that eluded him in his four years with his previous program — a championship. For Lance and the other returners, it’s a chance to earn back-to-back championships while making a statement to the rest of the A-10 that Richmond is the team to beat in the conference’s newest sport.

“I came down here to have fun and win games,” Derrek said. “I believe in this team, and I believe in the coaches. I really want a championship more than anything, and I think this team definitely has the capabilities to do that.”

A field guide to GEN Z IN THE WORKPLACE

SPIDER EXPERTS TALK CANDIDLY ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO HIRE

AND RETAIN

TODAY’S COLLEGE GRADUATES.

Back in early December, just as the 2022 holiday season was ramping up, The Washington Post published one of those tech-in-the-workplace stories about how the old folks just don’t get today’s up-and-comers. “Gen Z came to ‘slay,’” the headline read. “Their bosses don’t know what that means.” It was accompanied by a clickbaity “Cringe Quiz” called “Are You Fluent in Gen Z Slang?” (Dear reader: I was.)

The trope of experienced workers not knowing what to make of a new generation goes back a long way. In 1990, Time magazine warned Baby Boomers that Gen Xers “have the power to wreak havoc.” In 1951, the same magazine coined the term “Silent Generation” for the younger generation and asked what the silence meant, what it hid, and whether “youth’s elders [are] merely hard of hearing.” One can almost see Marie Curie sizing up lab assistants or Johannes Gutenberg eyeing print shop apprentices and muttering, “Kids these days.”

In light of this tradition — but, we hope, with a markedly different spirit — we offer guidance on today’s young workers. Our mentors are Spiders with expertise in recruiting and retaining new graduates beginning their careers. They run search firms, lead the HR functions of large companies, recruit college students, and prepare them to be recruited. They’re strong advocates for the value that young workers offer their employers and have a few words of gentle guidance for employers about them — and for the graduates themselves, too.

YOUR GUIDES

FRANK ALLEN, ’94 , UR’s director of employer relations

MATT APRAHAMIAN, B’92 , principal with Monument Consulting. His firm helps large companies manage what he calls “their non-employee workforce” — think gig workers like temps, contractors, consultants, freelancers, and the like.

DENISE DWIGHT SMITH , UR’s assistant vice president for alumni and career services

MARISSA KLEIN KAY, ’99 , founder and executive vice president of Choice Associates, a family-run staffing firm. In 2018, she launched the podcast The Dreamcatchers with her sister and subsequently developed The Dreamcatchers (www.thedreamcatchers.life) as a brand focused on résumé writing, job search strategy, and career empowerment and satisfaction.

MICHAEL KYLE, ’23 , current student and peer adviser in UR’s career services office. He did an internship in talent recruitment with Amazon and will join the company full time after graduation.

AZURÉE MONTOUTE-LEWIS, ’01 , global chief people officer with Hill+Knowlton Strategies, a global communications consultancy with more than 3,000 employees and 80 offices worldwide. She has also served in senior leadership positions with Fitch Group and Citibank.

DAVE ONG, R’87 , former president of the National Association of Colleges and Employers. He is an experienced campus recruiting leader who has led recruitment efforts for Capital One, Citibank, and Maximus.

LESLIE STEVENSON , UR’s director of career development

WHO ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

Generational divisions are always fuzzy. The Pew Research Center, which often dissects data from its surveys generationally, defines Gen Z as anyone born from 1997 forward. The oldest of them turn 26 this year, so most of them started graduating college with the class of 2019.

No generational cohort is a monolith. For Gen Z, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are immense, according to Allen. He notes that today’s Gen Z graduates, unlike their slightly older peers, experienced the height of the pandemic during their college years. “Within the newest graduates, maybe we should really be talking about a postCOVID generation,” he says.

Consider the scale of upheaval they experienced as teenagers and young 20-somethings. Without warning, their classes began meeting remotely. When they resumed in

person, everyone was separated by distance and face coverings. In an environment of fluctuating case counts, expectations relaxed about attendance, participation, deadlines, and such. As school got hard, having fun got even harder. They didn’t get together with peers to play intramurals, run student organizations, or dance at parties.

Resilience became the word on every educator’s lips. Parents and institutions did as much as they could, but there was only so much they could do.

Yet, like the Welsh nation defying English dominance, Gen Zers can proudly proclaim, “We’re still here.” They have developed enduring inner strength and resourcefulness, qualities they bring to the job market. And they’ve given serious thought to what matters most and what doesn’t seem so important anymore.

“They’re authentic, they’re introspective, they’re emotionally mature.”

WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT THEM?

“Where do we start?” was the collective sense of our experts. “The generation that I am seeing now, I’m super-impressed with,” says Kay. “They’re authentic, they’re introspective, they’re emotionally mature. I feel like they have more of an emotional understanding of the world that’s ahead of them.”

According to the panel, here are the generation’s main strengths from an employment perspective:

1. SUPERB TECH SKILLS.

“It’s impossible not to acknowledge their tech savviness,” says Aprahamian. “Ask younger people to do [unfamiliar] things, and they can figure it out.” He offered the example of a Gen Z employee who learned to write Excel macros on the fly by watching YouTube tutorials. “They’re resourceful and adept.”

Adds Montoute-Lewis, “They are keeping up with the pace of change.”

Keeping up also presages future adaptability. “Their mindset makes them better prepared to learn new technology than other generations,” says Ong.

2. ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET.

“More students are coming into the university with side gigs, and they’re more comfortable with risk-taking,” says Dwight Smith. Aprahamian adds, “They don’t mind betting on themselves” in everything from jumping on new opportunities to where they live and how they work.

The panel generally sees an inherent self-reliance and self-assurance nurtured by the culture they grew up in. “They believe they can do anything, anywhere, anytime because the world is at their fingertips, and it’s on 24 hours a day,” Montoute-Lewis says. “There’s an entrepreneurial spirit.”

This disposition shows up in how Kyle describes his approach to his internship at Amazon: “You have a baseline level of, ‘OK, here are your job responsibilities,’ but if you see something [else] that needs to be done, you should take care of it because you understand that it’s beneficial in the long run.”

3. COMFORT WITH BEING CHANGE AGENTS.

All of us, of every generation, went through the pandemic, says Kay. “It’s a unifier, so now if a Gen Z person says they want quality of life, the interviewer or manager will hear the request in a more receptive way because we all experienced it.”

As a result, they’re asking for and accelerating positive changes to workplace culture, says Montoute-Lewis. “What they’re asking for will benefit all of us.”

She points to the post-pandemic persistence of flexible work arrangements. “My younger employees are saying, ‘This is absolutely what I expect,’ and because of that I can work remotely, too. That’s not something I was personally fighting for. I was taught coming up to assimilate. They are pushing organizations to adapt to their needs.”

WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO THEM?

As companies evaluate Gen Z prospects, they should know that Gen Z prospects are evaluating them, too. Some of their criteria are evergreen. The security of having a fulltime offer out of college was one of the biggest factors that led Kyle to his post-graduation position with Amazon.

But they want other things if they can get them, and they bring these expectations to their job searches. Employers are wise to listen. Given the current candidate-driven job market, “this generation is in a position to push its interests,” Dwight Smith says.

These interests include a preference for hybrid work environments and ample opportunity to develop new, transferable skills. “I’m really surprised at how aggressively Gen Z is seeking out training opportunities,” Aprahamian says.

They make values-driven career decisions. “They’re not just hungry to get a job,” Kay says. “They’re hungry for a job that will fill their bucket, and I respect it.” Aprahamian sees the passion, too. “Gen Z uniquely brings a broader

expectation of their employers” in areas such as sustainability and diversity, equity, and inclusion, he says. Montoute-Lewis describes it as an alignment between personal and professional senses of purpose. They “need to believe in the values of the company,” she says.

It’s not an all-or-nothing proposition, notes Kyle. “I would definitely prefer to work for a company that is in line with my personal values,” he says. “The flip side of that is that a paycheck and job security are super attractive.”

The trade-offs are something that Kay counsels job candidates about. “You have to put everything into your decision-making and decide what is most important to you,” she says. “No matter what happens, with every generation reality will hit.”

They’re also highly motivated by a sense of purpose, Allen says. It’s not enough for a supervisor to ask them to do a task. “They want to know what the value of their work is. What is the point? They want to know and connect with the bigger picture.”

“They’re hungry for a job that will fill their bucket.”

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES?

Most of the panelists zeroed in on communication skills as the area of career preparedness in which Gen Z has the most room to grow.

Ong chalks it up, in part, to the pandemic. “Most of them lost anywhere from one to two years of what we would think of as a normal college career,” he says. That included the cancellation of many corporate internships in summer 2020. Aprahamian sees technology playing a role as people increasingly text and IM. “That outreach, that ability to make small chat and converse — I’m a little nervous about some of the communication skills.”

Mental health concerns were at the forefront of many minds during interviews. Gen Z is driving a national conversation about anxiety, burnout, and balance — concerns they are bringing with them to the workplace.

Some experts expressed, with a request for anonymity, a sensitivity to accountability. One told a story about a Gen Z employee missing a task, yet still being disturbed when a supervisor called attention to it. “I’m observing a little bit of softness,” the person said.

Gen Z’s comfort with job mobility will likely challenge employers, but they bear some blame for Gen Z’s attitudes, acknowledges Montoute-Lewis. “They’re much more skeptical [that companies value them], and rightly so if you

imagine what they’ve seen,” she says, noting that the job market often rewards moving from job to job. Kyle says many of his friends already think so. “If you’re job-hopping, your salary’s going up,” he says. “Then your old company might want you back, and they’ll give you more money than you would have gotten if you’d just stayed there.”

More broadly, there’s a question of whether Gen Z’s expectations of the employment landscape are too idealistic and, if so, how they will cope with compromise and disappointment.

“They’re coming in hot, right?” Kay says. “They want what they want. But if an industry or company doesn’t offer what you want, it would be very unrealistic to interview and expect treatment that they do not provide.”

“We spend a lot of time preparing students for what to expect and how to succeed,” Stevenson says. “That includes conversations about being realistic.”

Lastly, several people pointed out that Gen Z’s experience is shaped by growing up during a period when the economic scales have generally tipped in favor of job seekers. “They’ve never seen sustained, bad unemployment figures,” Aprahamian says. If the economy shifts, so will job-seekers’ calculations.

WHAT CAN EMPLOYERS DO?

1. FOCUS ON COMPETENCIES, NOT JUST CREDENTIALS.

The companies recruiting out of colleges and universities most successfully are increasingly focused on the skills applicants have developed, not their majors, Ong says. “You’re seeing a lot of firms realize that the quantitative skills, the problem-solving skills, the communication skills can exist in a lot of different majors and a wider group of candidates. You can teach somebody how to do financial modeling, for example, but it’s harder to teach flexibility of thought or work ethic.”

2. OFFER TRAINING AND CLEAR CAREER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS.

“We want our organization to be a destination for talent because people understand that we’re going to invest in them,” Montoute-Lewis says. “It’s important that we are helping grow their skills and capabilities and creating pathways for them so that they know we’re going to help them reach their potential.”

3. BE READY TO TALK ABOUT VALUES.

Aprahamian says that organizations historically didn’t worry about candidates asking questions about their values or sustainability or DEI plans. But now, he says, “these questions are coming.” Organizations need to be ready for them.

4. DON’T TRY TOO HARD.

Attempts to relate to the newest generation can backfire badly, warns Kyle. “When you use Slack, sometimes you react with an emoji, but the older generation won’t always grasp the concept,” he says. “We might interpret the emoji differently. Sometimes I’ll see companies put emojis in job listings or descriptions, and it makes me laugh.”

5. ALWAYS CONNECT.

Remember that people are people. “This isn’t super-insightful from a business context,” Aprahamian says, “but I think young people are still the funniest people in the world in every generation. When I get the chance to have lunch with five or six of them and watch their banter and humor, that’s one of my favorite things.”

“It’s not easy out there,” Kay says. “You have to be more human than ever.”

From the classroom to podcasts to the TEDx stage,

clinical psychologist and assistant professor of psychology

takes a creative Sherlock Holmes approach to unpacking identity, trauma, and personal development, especially during the college years. UNIVERSITY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMIE BETTS
JANELLE PEIFER

AT THE START OF HER CLASS SESSIONS, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PSYCHOLOGY

JANELLE PEIFER OFTEN ASKS STUDENTS TO SHARE THREE THINGS: A HIGH, A LOW, AND A NEED.

“It helps me gauge where students are, how they’re feeling, and what they need from the class session,” she says.

Peifer herself is feeling like she’s in a pretty great place since joining the University of Richmond in fall 2021. Her teaching, research, and clinical experience — she is a licensed clinical psychologist — all dovetail in her ongoing professional exploration of students’ development during the college years — “an incredible period of infinite malleability and potential.”

Peifer examines how college students and recent graduates, especially those from historically marginalized groups, navigate issues of identity, culture, and mental health, particularly complex trauma. In an ongoing longitudinal study (now at seven years and counting), she has asked thousands of students about their values and life paths and posed the big question, “Why does college matter?” And she is dedicated to engaging in critical conversations about mental health and identity, equity, and inclusion not just on campus but far beyond, in public scholarship that spans from a popular podcast about the HBO program In Treatment to a recent TEDx talk. “Public scholarship is a duty and an imperative for us to think about how what we do can serve and better the world,” she says.

FORGING HER PATH

Peifer’s own life path had an oversized fork, with one branch leading to psychology and the other to a professional dance career. For high school, she attended a rigorous boarding dance academy where she trained in classical ballet for hours every day.

“There was this increasing realization that there were whole parts of myself that were harder to practice because dance is all consuming,” she says. “To be done at a very high level, dance requires an absolute immersion that blocks out all other aspects of your life and your mind. I found that I really liked intellectual engagement. I concluded that dance could always be involved in my life but without it being my profession.”

She continued to dance and choreograph as a creative outlet as she pursued her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Wake Forest University and doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Virginia and during her six years as an assistant professor of psychology at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. (She’s still looking for her “dance home” in Richmond.)

Peifer was drawn to psychology by what she describes as “the Sherlock Holmes element” of it. “Growing up, I really loved Sherlock Holmes stories,” she says. “I loved the ability to use your mind and awareness to solve problems and put together the pieces of a puzzle. Often, in therapy and in research, it feels similar to that. It requires me to have this presence and ability to be empathetically attuned to

people and to have the right pieces. Now I recognize even more it isn’t me coming in as an individual and figuring out the puzzle of another person but this cool process of putting the puzzle pieces together with your client in this collaborative way.”

Peifer didn’t envision a career in academia when she started at Wake Forest. As a Black woman, she didn’t see herself represented in the faculty. But one particular psychology faculty member, professor Lisa Kiang, an Asian American woman, took Peifer under her wing. “I was fortunate that Lisa went above and beyond to invest in me, mentor me, and show faith in my abilities,” Peifer says.

Kiang helped Peifer design and execute her first independent research project, at a home for orphaned girls in Kenya. In this “photo voice” project on self-esteem and self-construction, the girls took photos that reflected their identities, lives, and community.

“It was the first time I saw the artistry of research, where you’re able to take something that you care about — this question — and design something that needs to be clever, well-grounded, and innovative to respond to that question,” Peifer says. “So many of the questions I’m interested in, so many of the things I care about, the data is not there because the people who were asking the questions didn’t look like me. So I could feel viscerally this sense that I could contribute to the field in meaningful ways and bring perspectives that would enrich our understanding of psychological functioning.”

STILL MALLEABLE, OPEN, WILLING TO LEARN

Peifer’s ongoing research — her “dream research project” that she launched in her final year of her doctoral program — takes a long-term perspective on college students’ development, particularly the development of their intercultural competence.

“I love studying emerging adulthood,” she says. “I see college as this space where you have this psychological openness that sets you on a pathway that can have ripple effects for communities and organizations. I love being in the classroom with students when they’re at this transition point, where they’re still malleable, still open, and still willing to learn.”

how it may be showing up in ways that I think will have ripple effects for decades to come.”

The longitudinal study also prompts students to evaluate the big picture: What is the purpose of higher education? How does it shape the way that students see themselves and the world? How does it expand their minds from what they would have been had they stayed at home and not attended college?

I LOVE BEING IN THE CLASSROOM WITH STUDENTS WHEN THEY’RE AT THIS TRANSITION POINT.”

The longitudinal study involves thousands of students across three higher education institutions: Agnes Scott College, University of Redlands, and St. Mary’s College in Indiana. Peifer and her collaborator, Elaine Mayer Lee, provost at Goucher College, survey each cohort in their study right before they start college, follow up with them each year they’re in school, and check in on them a year after graduation. Then they will complete a capstone survey five years after graduation.

“You have this remarkable portrait of someone from the time they’re 17 or 18, into their mid-twenties,” she says. “You get this decade of information about their developmental path and see which experiences in college may have had — or not had — immediate impacts. People are able to reflect on and connect the dots of how they got to where they are.”

The first cohort started college in 2015; its capstone interviews will take place in 2024. Results so far show that having diverse social relationships on campus — for example, in the classroom or in living/learning communities — can be even more transformative than travel-based experiences in fostering lasting empathy and connection with others. This knowledge can inform college faculty and administrators in their efforts to provide more inclusive education.

The coincidental timing of the study during the pandemic provided an unexpected additional lens through which to view students’ mental health. “We’re able to look at these students before and after the pandemic, and we see not only increased mental health concerns, but declines in empathy,” she says. “In many ways, institutions across the United States are plowing ahead like, ‘The pandemic’s over now; let’s get back to life.’ But in the classroom, we’re seeing similar burnout to what we’re seeing across the nation. The psychological toll of the pandemic caused a lot of disruptions of key social development moments for students that I think they’re still reconciling and making sense of. Institutions need to slow down and recognize

“I’m interested not just in the impact on the individual, but on the community and the world,” she says. “It’s especially true for historically marginalized groups who haven’t had access to education and who are taking on enormous debt that college needs to have a financial payoff. So we do ask a lot about their professional outcomes. But we also ask about meaning and purpose and values. What is the meaning of the work that they do? How can it be utilized to serve not only themselves, but their community and the entire world in meaningful ways? As a faculty member, I think that’s our sacred duty to make sure that students see their education not just as a way to get a job and to take care of themselves, but to better the world.”

UR HOME

When Peifer read the University of Richmond’s call for applicants for her position, she sensed that she’d found a place where she could contribute in meaningful ways. The posting called for someone with training in mental health disparities and diversity sciences — check. It also stated the university’s commitment to developing a diverse workforce and student body and to modeling an inclusive campus community that values the expression of difference. “That was extremely compelling for me; I couldn’t get it out of my head,” she says. “I loved the idea of creating inclusion within the psychology department as well as within the broader institution so that it could yield the benefits of having a truly diverse and integrative educational experience.”

Peifer has worked diligently toward those aims since arriving on campus. She has led faculty training sessions on how taking a culturally informed and inclusive approach improves outcomes for all students. Doron Samuel-Siegel, professor of law, legal practice, worked with Peifer on a training for law school faculty. “Some participants might find themselves wondering, ‘Are these questions (of inclusion) intractable? Is this work I can really participate in?’”

Samuel-Siegel says. “But the way that Janelle did her work and the information she communicated really allowed people to come away with a sense of practical applicability — to think not purely in aspirational terms, but with a sense that this is realistic and accomplishable.”

The Power of Rest

“The individual act of rest is a powerful thing,” Peifer told the audience at TEDx RVA in November. “A rested world has more capacity for kindness, compassion, and creativity. It has the ability to help us heal traumatic wounds that keep us from living our most expansive and free lives.”

Here are Peifer’s three tips for restorative rest.

1. Examine your rest narratives. Our behaviors and attitudes toward rest have back stories — either explicit messages told to us in our youth (“You can rest when you’re dead”) or ones we picked up implicitly while observing our family and community. Reflecting intentionally on those stories — by journaling, by talking them out in a video on your phone — can help you better understand what is driving your actions, for better or worse.

2. Inventory the resources you have. Ask yourself: When do you rest best and most restoratively? What are the key elements of those experiences? A quiet room? Calming music? What support do I need in my relationships, community, and workplace that will enable me to rest?

3. Develop individualized, tailored rest action steps.

Goals without specific plans tend to flop. So think about the specific, measurable, and achievable actions you can take. They don’t need to be huge. It may mean practicing a new rest technique or committing to taking a proper lunch away from your desk twice a week.

Peifer’s expertise in the role of identity and culture lends itself to a $625,000 grant awarded in November by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to an interdisciplinary team of faculty at University of Richmond. Peifer will work with colleagues Karen Kochel, associate professor of psychology, and Kristjen Lundberg, associate professor of social psychology, to develop a project to better understand belonging among college students, particularly those who are from historically underrepresented groups, and what institutions can do to foster a better sense of belonging and overall functioning for students. “It’s a really cool opportunity for the three of us to bring together our different skill sets and perspectives to look at the question of student belonging in a holistic way,” she says.

Just as Kiang did for Peifer at Wake Forest, Peifer is passionate about mentoring the next generation of clinical psychologists of color. She currently has six undergraduates in her research lab and is co-mentoring a seventh. “Undergraduate research is a really important way of building pipelines,” she says. “We have a huge representation and diversity problem in our field. Less than 5% of psychologists at the doctoral level are Black. One of the big issues is that we don’t engage students of color in early, frequent, and high-quality mentored research experiences, which are necessary if you’re going to later get into those doctoral-level programs.”

Then there’s the informal mentoring that simply happens in the course of, well, Peifer’s courses. Like when she starts a class session by turning off the lights and leading students through a guided meditation. “It really helped me to calm down and prepare for class,” says Yangyue Li, ’24, a psychology major. “You can tell she really cares about her students.”

Or when she welcomes students to her home. She purposely chose to live close to campus so that she would have more opportunities to attend her students’ events and connect with them outside of the classroom. “Getting students out of the classroom enables you to see and hear different sides of them,” she says. “You can make connections between their background and identity, who they are and what they care about, and how it’s relevant to what we’re talking about in class.”

And they get to know her better, too. Peifer considers herself a huge nerd who has always been into works of fantasy. She is fluent in Harry Potter and Star Wars and plays Magic the Gathering. She relishes working pop culture references into her classes. “I’ll name-check programs in my class and encourage them to consume different media because that helps bring these topics we’re talking about to life,” she says. For example, one doesn’t need to dig too deeply into movies like Wakanda Forever or Encanto to find vivid examples of intergenerational trauma.

She could teach a whole class on her favorite TV show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or the works of H.P. Lovecraft. “Fantasy is very much about imagining new futures and other worlds — how things could be, not how they are,” she says. “There’s infinite potential of creation.”

SHARING KNOWLEDGE WHERE IT’S MOST NEEDED

Peifer is dedicated to sharing her own creative output and expertise far beyond academic circles. Her public scholarship takes many forms: serving as a source for reporters, sharing mental health tips on Instagram, and publishing her research in open-access journals that don’t require costly subscriptions. “I knew if I was going to be in higher ed that I didn’t want to be in an ivory tower where the production of knowledge is kept away from the people who can most benefit from it,” she says.

Her guest appearance on the podcast Therapy for Black Girls — another example of her public scholarship — led to the thrilling invitation to co-host In Session, the official podcast for the HBO drama series In Treatment. The show’s fourth season follows Brooke Taylor, a Black psychiatrist, as she helps a trio of patients grapple with their complex issues while working through her own. In the podcast, Peifer and her co-host, writer-actor Brandon Kyle Goodman, break down the episodes, demystify the therapy process, and examine the relationship between therapist and client.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to reflect not only the therapeutic process that centers on the client, but to zoom out to think about, ‘Who is the psychologist? What are the pressures of being a Black woman clinician sitting in that chair? What are the responsibilities, the joys, and gifts that come with that process?’” Peifer says.

Listeners reached out to Peifer to express their appreciation. “People told me they’ve never felt seen or validated in that way, and that felt really cool,” she says. Peifer and the podcast also have fans within the Richmond psychology department.

“It’s wonderful that Janelle has the outlet she does to talk about things that aren’t always discussed,” says Camilla Nonterah, assistant professor of health psychology and one of Peifer’s colleagues. “The work that Janelle is doing — to disseminate her knowledge in ways that communities can digest it, share those real examples of what people may be experiencing, and be able to connect — is extremely empowering.”

For their final episode, Peifer and Goodman interviewed the star of In Treatment, Uzo Aduba, who has won three Emmy Awards and is best known for her role Crazy Eyes in the prison drama Orange is the New Black. “How she described preparing for the role of Brooke is indicative of her understanding the importance and relevance of representing something that, within the Black community in particular, is still in its nascent stages of being acceptable and destigmatized,” Peifer says. “It was wonderful to hear someone with her platform being really conscientious and thoughtful about that responsibility and recognizing the intricacies of the work we do as psychologists.”

In her own clinical practice at the Center for Inclusive Therapy and Wellness, Peifer specializes in trauma-based care and particularly enjoys working with high-achieving “badass change-making women and nonbinary folks.” “They’ve checked every box and are at this point of, ‘What

now? Is this it? Where’s the joy? Where’s the freedom for me to actually bask in what I’ve achieved?’ For many of them, the act of rest and joy is revolutionary because they’ve been told their entire life that they are what they do.”

Peifer drew on that very theme for her TEDx talk in Richmond in November. In her talk, “The Freedom to Rest,” Peifer examined how our hustle culture has diminished the value and practice of rest. “Right now, in this era of massive burnout, exhaustion, disillusionment, our bodies, our minds, and spirits are calling out for rest,” she told the audience, and she shared three tips for restorative rest (see sidebar).

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IS A REALLY IMPORTANT WAY OF BUILDING PIPELINES. WE HAVE A HUGE REPRESENTATION AND DIVERSITY PROBLEM IN OUR FIELD. LESS THAN 5% OF PSYCHOLOGISTS AT THE DOCTORAL LEVEL ARE BLACK.”

Peifer admitted to the audience, “I think it’s important that I self-disclose: I’m a hypocrite.” Given her many roles — psychologist, assistant professor, wife, and mother of two young children — rest is difficult for her, too.

How does she meet that need in her own life? She bikes to work each day. “Like most academics, I have a tendency to push myself to my limit with no breaks built into my day,” she says. “Biking becomes a moment where I can only focus on the wind, the sky, the trees, and the fact that I am alive in this viscerally freeing way.”

She also reads a ton of books, much of it fantasy, of course. There’s family board game night. And with her kids, there’s dancing — lots of dancing — around the living room.

D DENALI TEST THE

Two Spiders ventured into the Alaskan wilderness to challenge themselves, marvel at the majesty of the natural world, and continue a friendship forged at Richmond.

Arealtor and an insurance broker walk into the wild.

If it sounds like the setup for a joke, for Rick Stockel and John Sherman, it was a plan. Two years of preparation and anticipation had brought the two longtime friends and Richmond classmates, both just past their 61st birthdays, to the shoulder of this hard-packed dirt-and-gravel road more than 4,000 miles from home. At their feet, the ground dropped away into scrub. In the distance, the terrain rose again to steep ridges.

“This is where we have to start walking,” Rick says in the video footage he captured in the moment, the camera panning the spare landscape.

It was a Sunday, late August of 2022, and ahead of them lay what they had come here for: five days and nights trekking in Alaska’s Denali National Park and Preserve, a raw and challenging subarctic wilderness larger than the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware put together. The gravel road where Rick and John stood, along with two fellow adventurers Rick had picked to join them, is the only one that serves Denali’s more than 6 million acres. Fifteen percent of the park is covered by glaciers. It is braided by multiple rivers and thousands of miles of streams. More than 200 species of animals live in the park, including grizzlies, black bears, wolves, coyote, lynx, caribou, and moose. If you’re not conversant with a compass, a topographical (aka “topo”) map, and some solid backcountry skills, you might quickly find yourself lost and in a load of trouble.

But whatever the weather, the wildlife, or the landscape might throw at the four men in the days to come, they would have to depend only on those skills, each other, and what they were wearing or carrying in the backpacks to navigate. For true emergencies, they had a satellite-linked GPS transponder. But for anything short of that, no matter how weary or worn or beleaguered they might find themselves, they’d have to get out of the wilderness the same way they were about to get in: on their own two feet.

“I knew it was going to be hard,” says John. “But I didn’t know it would be as hard as it would be.”

COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE

The first day of their adventure, the four men rose at 5 a.m. to catch the park shuttle bus that delivered them to their point of departure into the backcountry. Leaving the road behind, they began a steep descent, bushwhacking into the scrubby brush.

To minimize human impact on the land and preserve the park’s wild character, Denali is divided into 87 separate “units,” each one thousands of acres. Not quite half

of those units are assigned limit on the number of trekkers permitted to camp overnight. Rick and John’s group would spend two nights in Unit 7 (quota: six people) and three in Unit 8 (quota: four people). Chances were good that the four might go the entire trip without seeing or hearing another human besides themselves. Bears, on the other hand, were a distinct possibility.

Hundreds of black and brown bears make their home in the park — how many is only a guesstimate. From a safe (read: “very long”) distance, or from the safer confines of a park bus, a bear sighting is one of the thrills of a Denali visit. But even if there has been only a single recorded case of a fatal bear encounter in the park’s more than 100-year history, nevertheless, nobody wants a chance to be the second. On a trip to Alaska in his 20s, Rick had experienced two too-close-for-comfort bear encounters he wouldn’t care to repeat, and as they made their way through the brush now, they saw enough fresh bear scat to know the risk of a surprise encounter was more than theoretical.

I need these challenges physically and mentally just to feel alive as a human being.

Fortunately, bears have excellent hearing, so hikers in Denali are advised to make a racket that (hopefully) encourages any bears in the area to clear off. As they hiked, Rick blew a piercing whistle while the others shouted, “Hey bear!” and, “Hi Yogi!” Still, being “constantly on alert for running into a bear,” Rick recalls, was “mentally taxing.”

And physically, that first day, and indeed any of the days that would follow, was no stroll in the park either. “It’s constantly up and down these small mountains,” Rick says. “We had to descend maybe 600 or 700 feet, and then we followed a small creek bed, and then we were bushwhacking up the next mountain. And then, all of a sudden, we were on frozen tundra, sinking down into loose sand.”

There were also repeated crossings of the swift-flowing glacier-fed rivers and streams, slate-colored with silty runoff, the water so cold it burned. “The river is split into 20 or 30 branches, and you have to cross every single one to get from one side to the other,” says John. “Cold water is not my favorite thing, and so I would go to great lengths to cross rivers and streams at their most narrow point, even walking hundreds of yards up or down river to find the ‘ideal’ place to cross, while others, like Rick, would just bite the bullet and cross whenever he encountered the barrier. I

was like a cat, and Rick was like a polar bear.”

At every water crossing, they also had to pause to loosen their backpack straps. You cross by facing the oncoming current and taking careful side steps. Lose your footing, and you could easily be swept away by the fast-moving current. Fall over backward with a 40-pound dead weight strapped to your back — “turtling,” they call it — and you would likely drown, says Rick.

“After hiking for five-plus hours up and down hills and through water, I came to the conclusion that meeting up with a bear was the least of my worries,” says Rick.

Their destination that first day was to find a place to camp within sight of the East Fork Glacier, which they hoped to hike to the following day. With only a topo map to follow, though, the four were regularly forced to backtrack, reroute, and, several times, chance it with questionable ascents and descents of steep, crumbling slopes.

“All the hiking I had ever done was on a trail,” says John. “This was the first time I had ever done true backcountry hiking. We ended up going over some terrain that was pretty dicey.”

And then there was the weather. Most days, the temperatures hovered in the 50s and at night sank into the 40s or lower. The wind was constant, sometimes gusting more than 50 mph. Every day it rained; it was impossible to stay dry.

“You are uncomfortable a lot, and you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” says John.

LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO TWILIGHT

Their LinkedIn profiles might not mark Rick Stockel and John Sherman as the likeliest two to trade their beds for Therm-a-Rests, bear spray, and five days and nights of that kind of discomfort. In fact, though, neither of them was a stranger to such challenges; they’d come to Denali in search of them.

“For me the draw was the rawness of the weather and environment with no guardrails to protect ourselves should we fall and slip down a slope, have an animal encounter, fall in a river or stream and get hypothermia, says Rick. “I need these challenges physically and mentally just to feel alive as a human being.”

Rick Stockel (blue hat) and John Sherman (black hat) spent nearly a week trekking in the Alaskan backcountry. “I knew it was going to be hard,” John says. “But I didn’t know it would be as hard as it would be.”

You just stop and stare with no words needed. That’s how beautiful this glacier was. It left me speechless.

In his later 20s and early 30s, in the years after he graduated from Richmond, Rick had been a river rafting guide. “I thought I was invincible,” he admits. There were wild whitewater excursions to West Virginia and Maryland, a few scrapes with near-drownings, a taste for pushing hard and doing it all. At some point, he proposed an “epic trip” to a couple of younger Richmond alumni he’d rafted with.

The seven-day paddling excursion on Alaska’s Copper River (“We literally walked in places no human has ever been,” says Rick) was followed by another seven days hiking in Denali. Thirty years later, he was making good on his dream to return.

As for John, when his family moved from the Chicago suburbs to southwest Virginia when he was 12, he found himself drawn to the outdoors and the nearby Blue Ridge. He joined the Boy Scouts, eventually rising to Eagle Scout. He spent “a ton of time” hiking before heading off to Richmond for college. He’s traversed the length of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. He’s hiked in the Great Smoky Mountains and the Sierra Nevadas, up Mount Whitney, and rim to rim of the Grand Canyon. He’s no stranger to putting one foot in front of the other. “I am very comfortable in the wilderness,” he says, and for years, he and Rick had been tossing around the idea of Alaska; finally, they’d found the time and put it on the calendar.

Their Denali companions, Sean and Luke, were a retired capitol police officer and a former Army Ranger who came with their own skills (not to mention relative youth: Sean, 52, and Luke, 42). Rick had specifically invited them “because I knew that they would work well with Johnny and me in any situation.”

Nevertheless, they were all grateful to reach their planned first night’s camp by the glacier-fed East Fork River at the end of that long first day — considerably more damp, dirty, and tired than when they’d set out, but otherwise reasonably unscathed.

Not that rest was the first order on arrival. In Denali, bear-safety guidelines require not only that you take a bear-proof container to carry and store all your food and anything else aromatically enticing (toothpaste, lip balm — bears have a sense of smell keener than a bloodhound’s), but also that you keep a distance of at least 100 yards between your tent and cooking area and another 100 yards between where you prepare meals and where you store your food. By the time they’d set up their tents, fetched water from the river, trekked the distance to, and back and forth between, their cooking and food-storage areas, fired up their backpacking stoves, and finally scarfed down their meals, the four had been on the go for more than 12 hours and covered more than 13 miles. Rick was so hungry that he didn’t bother to wait for his backpacker’s meal — chicken fettuccine — to fully rehydrate in its pouch, wolfing it down still half-crunchy. “Food never tasted so good,” he recalls.

Then it was a quick cleanup and finally crawling into their tents at 11 p.m. under the lingering twilight of arctic summer.

Under the best of circumstances, though, inch-thick backpacking mattresses on hard ground don’t make for the

most restful sleep. “Then that first night we had pouring rain and winds gusting 50 or 55 miles an hour,” says Rick. The storm nearly flattened their tent; John had to prop his trekking poles against the fabric, “or the tent would literally have been on my face while I was sleeping.”

Yet even if restless, the hours in their shared tent also gave Rick and John time to laugh over past adventures and misadventures, to joke, to recall songs they’d loved and moments they’d shared in their college years, to reminisce about that wild ride they’d taken when they’d started a business together in their 20s, launching — of all things — a hypoallergenic baby shampoo that had come this close to making the jump to the big time.

“We talked a lot about life and told a lot of stories,” says John.

WILD BEAUTY

And so it went in the days to come: the relentless wind, the intermittent rain, the constantly wet feet, the icy streams, the arduous treks, the bear wariness, the hasty meals, the restless nights, the dicey terrain, the sketchy scrambles.

But also the jokes, the stories, the lighthearted banter, the deepening friendships. “There is no doubt that a sense of humor is essential when you’re undergoing difficult circumstances, and we laughed a lot,” says John. Food, he recalls, was often fodder for good-natured teasing. “I took the opportunity of the trip to clean out every old dehydrated dinner I have accumulated over my time on Earth and ate some food that was upwards of 20 years old. So I regularly got the question, ‘Hey John, how old is dinner tonight?’”

Then there was the park itself, an expanse of natural beauty so vast and so wild that it was impossible for the four men not to find themselves in constant awe. Herds of caribou roamed past without apparent fear of humans. Wildflowers found purchase and bloomed in dry riverbeds.

The untamed landscape, the dizzying sweep of open vistas, the towering Alaska Range, the miles-long glaciers and broad river plains all dwarfed human perspective. John compares the experience to astronauts viewing the Earth from space; you see that we are part of a vast and

intricate puzzle we can barely grasp.

“I think people would have a lot more appreciation for the wilderness if they spent more time there,” says John. Monday (11 miles), they made the ascent to the East Fork glacier, a steep, barren expanse of stone, scree, and ice, a palette of gray and brown and white wreathed in mist that might put one in mind of Robert Scott’s dismay upon reaching the South Pole: “Great God, this is an awful place.”

The adventurers, though, saw it differently. “Beauty does not have to fit society’s standard of what beauty is,” says Rick. “Beauty is seeing something so majestic in its own unadulterated state that you just stop and stare with no words needed. That’s how beautiful this glacier was. It left me speechless.”

Standing on the glacier “is like being on a massive living thing,” says John. “There is nothing like being on top of this giant piece of ice that is moving and changing, especially when you are in the middle of nowhere, in a place where few people have ever been.”

THE 30-PERCENT CLUB

Tuesday (14 miles), they packed up in the still-fierce wind (“I hate you, Rick Stockel,” Sean shouts good naturedly, barely audible above the noise of the wind, in a video from that morning) for a cross-country haul to their second campsite. The day’s journey demanded another death-defying clamber up a precipitous, rock-strewn slope and a careful skirting of the zone decreed “no-go” by the park authorities due to high bear activity. If a third day of dirt and sweat and rain and river didn’t improve anybody’s appearance, still, nobody had turtled, twisted an ankle, or fallen off a cliff, and they’d so far encountered nothing more deadly than a moose — which, surprisingly, are actually responsible every year for more human injuries than bears are in Alaska, but this one had been contentedly munching leaves. So all four men were reasonably none the worse when they finally pitched camp and waited eagerly to see if John’s dinner predated the invention of the iPhone.

Wednesday was a big day, a 21-mile round-trip expedi-

You don’t have to disappear into the Denali backcountry, dodge bears, and clamber onto glaciers. But putting ourselves in green spaces, even if it’s a stroll in your local park, can be remarkably therapeutic, improving our health, emotional well-being, and cognitive function. Kelly Lambert, University of Richmond professor of behav ioral science in the department of psychology, has spent years studying how we benefit from immersing ourselves in nature. “Our ancestors evolved not in cities but in these natural terrains, and our brains evolved in sync with our environment,” says Lambert. When we place ourselves in the outdoors, “we are putting our brain in its natural habitat,” she says. “Going into nature helps us recalibrate.”

We are part of a vast and intricate puzzle we can barely grasp.

tion to the bridge where the Denali Park Road crosses the Toklat River, a destination now imbued with something of an abandoned, end-of-civilization desolation thanks to a landslide that blocked vehicle access miles before the river crossing. Carrying only day packs, however, considerably lightened the load of their trek, and John lightened it further by unraveling the tale of the time he was robbed, then successfully recovered his possessions, in Dallas — a multi-chapter saga peopled with a Dickensian cast and the plot twists and comic foibles to match.

“Out there, you have nothing but time,” says John. “And when you have nothing but time, you tell those kinds of stories, and nothing deepens relationships more than spending that carefree timelessness together.”

It was on that hike, too, that the group was unexpectedly rewarded with a rare gift: a lingering clear view of Denali.

At 20,310 feet, the mountain — North America’s highest — is an enormous chunk of mostly granite amidst the tall peaks of the Alaska Range, hulking evidence of the tectonic forces at work that make the area North America’s most geologically active region. Denali is so massive that in effect it makes its own notoriously volatile weather. Thus, despite its bulk, it frequently remains so thoroughly shrouded in cloud cover that it is virtually invisible 70 percent of the time; visitors fortunate enough to catch sight of it join the enviable “30-percent club.”

That morning, Rick had entertained a brief fantasy of how easy it would be for them just to call it an adventure and pack up, get out, and return to the world of hot showers, fresh meals, dry clothes, a real bed to sleep in. But any such thoughts evaporated when the weather suddenly cleared, and for nearly 90 minutes as they hiked, the group enjoyed breathtaking, unimpeded views of the mountain, a spectacle that made every one of the day’s 21 miles worth the effort.

“It renews my spirit to go into the wilderness,” says Rick. “It gives me perspective again that we are here on Earth for such a short time and that there is such beauty and adventure waiting for those of us who choose to explore.”

Thursday, the group confined themselves to more local hiking. Friday, their final morning, they rose before dawn. “We had to get up early to hike the last five miles to get to the end of the road where the bus picks up everyone who was in the wilderness past the point where the road ends,” says John. As they left the wilderness behind, Rick captured a final video of the four of them collapsed inside a stationary bus the park service leaves as a shelter for the returning hikers. The mood is fatigue. “We made it out alive,” says Rick. Then someone cracks a remark about the aroma wafting from John’s now-bare feet, and the laughter breaks out again.

THE STORIES GET BETTER WITH TIME

Months later, considerably cleaner and notably less perfumed in wilderness expedition, the four adventurers, along with their wives, gathered again for the first time since their Denali trip for a long weekend at Rick’s house at the beach. “We had a blast, and somehow the stories grew larger than life with our wives in the room,” Rick says.

Those memories, the stories, the profound bond of a shared challenging experience, are why a couple of 60-yearold guys and their middle-aged companions decided to put themselves through all of it and come out the other side glad that they did. Not despite the discomfort, the physical exertion, the mental demands, the uncertainty and exhaustion and risks to be navigated and difficulties overcome — but because of them. For the misery and the beauty, the fatigue and the wonder, the simple necessity of having to work together, the power of depending on another person for your life.

“It is a story about friendship as much as it is about wilderness,” says John. “Life is short. It’s important to spend time with people you love and do it in amazing places where you can make memories you never forget.”

WHAT THEY SAID

Bailey’s quilt includes panels with handwritten messages from people throughout the Spider community.

Here’s a sample:

• “Spider Pride! The UR experience lasts forever.”

• “Beauty of the place, beauty of the people.”

• “I love that UR gave me some of my best friends in the world.”

Welcome, Kevin

Chloe Bailey, ’10, learned to stitch in a costume course in the Modlin Center for the Arts, a skill which helped her launch her own quilting business in 2022. Her first major project: a community quilt with handwritten messages from Spiders honoring Kevin F. Hallock’s inauguration as president in April.

“I like to connect with people, and a fun way to do that is through the arts,” Bailey said. “Creativity is my space where I feel most free, most relaxed, and people really connect to that.”

Kimberly Dean-Anderson, a member of the inauguration planning committee, saw a quilt Bailey made for a friend using a UR T-shirt and commissioned her to make one for Hallock’s inauguration.

“We wanted an activity participants could contribute to at the community festival that would demonstrate the diversity of our community and commemorate the

inauguration events,” she said. The committee sees the quilt as a lasting symbol of Spiders coming together to celebrate a new era, she added.

The gift surprised and delighted the Hallocks. “Tina and I love it,” Kevin Hallock said. “We are so grateful to be welcomed so warmly.”

Bailey presented the quilt to them in October. The design features a Richmond jersey with the president’s name in the center, surrounded by handwritten well-wishes from the Spider community. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others were encouraged to write notes to the Hallocks for the quilt during the inauguration festival in April.

“I wanted the president to feel supported not just by his professional team, but by the entire UR family,” Bailey said. “I feel very honored that someone saw my art and wanted me to create something for the University of Richmond.”

Rusty Burrell, ’07, turned heads at the 2022 Richmond half-marathon when he ran the course in Spider football gear. Burrell, a former UR track high jumper and hurdler, borrowed the uniform from UR’s athletics department. He has also run events in Washington, D.C., in Nationals gear and in Philadelphia in a 76ers uniform.

“It’s fun to pump up the crowd,” he told Runner’s World. “One guy even called his mother on FaceTime and had me wave to her.”

A LEADER AMONG LEADERS “All of us look to do something that is so special and so different that it grabs the attention and admiration of the world and makes it a better place,” said Robert S. Jepson Jr., B’64, GB’75, and H’87.

He spoke in September as alumni, faculty, students, and more gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, the nation’s first undergraduate school dedicated to the study of leadership.

PHILANTHROPY

All-star legacy

In her Westhampton days, Betty Gustafson, W’47, was a multi-sport all-star. She excelled in basketball, tennis, field hockey, and track, lettering enough her junior year to earn the Blazer award. She also earned the Seal award, which honored her sportsmanship and enthusiasm.

But her biggest impact on UR athletics arguably came after her induction into its Hall of Fame in 2001. Soon after, a friend, Mary Murphy, further honored her by establishing an athletics scholarship in her name to support access and affordability.

The scholarship’s first recipient, JoAnna Ubiwa, ’10, was a track and field sprinter who majored in psychology and communication studies. Today, she is a licensed clinical professional counselor with a master’s degree from Loyola University and a

doctorate from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

“[Betty and Mary] paved the way for me to be at UR,” Ubiwa said. “We stayed in touch for years after I graduated. They didn’t just give me the scholarship — they cared about me as a person and a friend.”

As the years passed, Gustafson celebrated her 80th and 90th birthdays with parties at UR, asking friends to buttress the scholarship fund in lieu of birthday gifts.

Gustafson, who died in 2016, also designated a portion of her estate to fund the scholarship, providing more support for generations of student athletes. Murphy has, too.

“Betty and I believed in using our resources to make a difference in their lives,” she said. “It just made sense to us.”

MAYBE AN ARTIST LIZ MONTAGUE, ’18

Montague became a New Yorker cartoonist soon after graduation, which makes her career as an artist seem foretold. Not so, as she reveals in this poignant and funny graphic memoir. It follows young Liz as she is pushed and nudged, including at UR, to overcome her doubts and find the courage to follow her dreams.

INTO THE ROOM STEVEN ROGERS, G’92

This novel tells the story of a reluctant religious pilgrim coming to grips with his alcoholism, his alienation from family, and his sense of living his life adrift from any sense of meaning. One reviewer on Amazon called it “a beautiful reminder that God’s grace is available to all.”

PSYCHEDELICS FOR EVERYONE

MATT ZEMON, ’94, EDITOR

As research at places like Johns Hopkins and Harvard renews therapeutic interest in psychedelics, Zemon offers a beginner’s guide to what they are, how traditional practitioners have used them, what researchers are learning about them today, and more.

FILM CREWS AND RENDEZVOUS HEATHER WEIDNER, G’00

The second book in Weidner’s Jules Keene Glamping Mystery series finds Keene working to solve the murder of a Hollywood writer and the disappearance of a publicist. At stake is the survival of her business, a bucolic resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

SERVICE Calista Anderson, ’20, is telling her family’s difficult story to support a community making sacrifices for our nation.

When Calista Anderson’s name and photo popped up in an Associated Press story distributed nationwide in the fall of 2022, her phone buzzed nonstop.

Many of her Spider pals reached out with a similar quip: “Your name is Calista?”

WHY RICHMOND?

Anderson’s father suggested she check out UR. He was familiar with the Robins name and legacy because of his work in the pharmaceutical industry.

“He took me on a tour, and I just fell in love with it,” she said, citing its beauty, location, and study abroad options. “After that, I was like, ‘Dad, don’t take me on any more tours.’”

(She’s Callie to them.) But they were really writing because they’d just learned about a deep loss borne by a friend with whom they’d gone to the library and the lodges, and they wanted to show their support.

The AP article presented Anderson as the face of the CIA Officers Memorial Foundation, which provides scholarships and other financial support to the families of recently deceased CIA officers and contractors. Anderson works for it as an events coordinator, helping organize fundraising dinners, golf outings, and other events to support its mission of serving these families. Families, the AP article made clear, like hers.

Just a few weeks after her 12th birthday, Anderson’s mother was killed in Afghanistan. The death of her mother, who was a CIA station chief, and six others came during a meeting with a suicide bomber

posing as an intelligence asset. The loss was a total shock to Anderson, who didn’t know that her mom worked for the CIA.

At the time, the family lived in Stafford, Virginia, a place chock full of federal workers with an implicit understanding of her family’s sacrifice and the inappropriateness of curiosity. But still, everyone knew about her family’s experience. Coming to Richmond meant a new beginning. On campus, with hallmates and classmates, she could be just Callie on her own terms.

“I really relished the opportunity that that wasn’t my identity,” she said. “I could explore and figure out who I was and what I was interested in and wanted to do.” She started out in Moore Hall, majored in global studies, and went off to London to study art history in graduate school.

Her education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels was aided by scholarships from the nonprofit where she now works. In 2021–22, it provided 73 family members with more than $1.7 million in scholarships and other support. Anderson is one of its eight employees.

Anderson emphasizes that the spouses and children the foundation serves have a diversity of experiences. Some, like Anderson, lost a parent or spouse suddenly in the

line of duty, while others lost loved ones to accidents or illness. “The common thread is secrecy,” she said. “You’re not sure who you can talk to or how much you can say.”

Though some days are draining and she needs to step back, working at the foundation also gives her unexpected moments of joy. Sometimes, someone will quietly pull her aside and say, “I knew your mom,” and share stories. “People are so caring and so giving,” she said. “A lot of people are very supportive.”

She recognizes that the attention that her story draws — her mother’s death made international news and is depicted in the film Zero Dark Thirty, for example — puts her in a unique position within this unique community, where few of the other families’ sacrifices get similar attention. That discrepancy motivates her immersion in the foundation’s mission and her willingness to share her story.

“Maybe I’ll hit a point where I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I can keep doing this every day,’ but right now, I’m really grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given,” she said. “There are so many people who don’t know about our foundation. It’s important we get out there and talk about the life-changing work that we do.”

LEADERSHIP

A heritage reclaimed

The sun was shining, the temperature was perfect, and Keith Anderson, R’89, had a beautiful view of the Nansemond River. On an emotional day for the Nansemond Indian Nation, Anderson, the tribe’s principal chief since 2021, participated in a ceremony for the re-acquisition of 500 acres of ancestral land in Suffolk, Virginia.

“We can now, as kindred spirits in Virginia, continue to have programs like [the re-acquisition] and build relationships with communities of all races,” said Anderson.

The Nansemond Indian Nation is one of seven federally recognized tribes in Virginia, and it has more than 500 citizens. As chief, Anderson commits himself to honoring and preserving American Indian traditions.

The process of re-acquiring the land began when the family that owned Cross Swamp contacted Ducks Unlimited, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving waterfowl habitats, about selling and conserving the land. The organization reached out to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, which recommended returning the lands to

the Nansemond. With the land, the nation plans to build an educational facility and share it with the public to foster understanding of Nansemond culture and traditions.

“We are making a combined effort to ensure that we are visible, that our tribes are featured, and that history is told the way it should be,” he said.

A longer version of this story, including photos of Anderson with his dance troupe Red Crook-ed Sky, appears on the magazine’s website.

This semiautobiographical novel follows a young American soldier as he experiences the horrors of World War II and awakens to a new conception of his Jewish identity. Novelist James Patterson calls the book “incredibly readable, intelligent, and highly emotional.”

MIFFLIN DRIFT

MATTHEW ELY, ’14

Ely’s novel, cowritten with his father, is a smalltown, coming-of-age tale centered on 15-year-old Larry, who comes from a dysfunctional home, runs around in the woods with his sometimes questionable friends, and navigates teen love as he grows up in pre-Vietnam America.

A DREAM WORTH FIGHTING FOR TIM HIGHTOWER, ’08 Hightower’s memoir tells his story of perseverance as he recovered from a catastrophic injury to reclaim a spot on an NFL roster. But that is only one layer of this Spider’s larger story of overcoming obstacles and developing a deeper sense of self and purpose.

Sky-high, sea-deep briefs

Think a government job is boring? Glenn Tallia, B’84, says think again. Over his 25 years as chief counsel for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, his work has spanned air, sea, and space, ranging from safety regulations for NOAA deep-sea research divers to climate assessments to developing a traffic management system for satellites.

“You have the opportunity to do some really great things in government that you could never do in the private sector,” he says.

Tallia has direct legal oversight over the three divisions. He handles intellectual property and technology transfer for the research coming out of the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. For the National Weather Service and its 4,000 employees, Tallia’s legal team handles everything from safety protocols for hurricane flight teams to lawsuits over weather balloons gone astray and forecasts that missed their mark.

The National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) “is one of the most important government agencies that people don’t know about,” Tallia says. He negotiated international agreements on the collaborative operation of NOAA’s geostationary and polar operational environmental satellites, which provide the underlying data for all weather forecasts. He is particularly proud of pioneering an open-data policy for sharing all NOAA data with the public. “Smart people will use the data to build businesses and create jobs,” he says.

NESDIS also controls space weather satellites that monitor and warn for solar flares and other potential hazards. He’s currently working with the National Space Council in the White House to develop a satellite traffic management system, which will alert operators of the increasing number of satellites in orbit about space junk and potential collisions.

“Every time I’ve had the privilege to go to the White House, I can’t believe I’m actually there for my work,” he says. “I’m always blown away by it.”

The robot at the door

During the pandemic, as restaurants experimented with new approaches to food delivery, a small army of robotic vehicles could be seen traversing a growing number of city streets and college campuses.

Behind some of these meals on micro wheels is Rob Zehner, ’94, vice president of vehicle engineering for Coco, which offers electric robot couriers piloted by a remote team of human operators. Zehner oversees the development and maintenance of the vehicle fleet.

“We see ourselves as the canonical last-mile delivery company,” he said. “We want to deliver anything from locations in your community to your doorstep or your office. Food delivery is a great place to start because it’s something everybody is familiar with.”

Zehner joined Coco in February 2022 after 11 years at Amazon, where he worked on the Kindle e-reader display, tablets, and Echo devices. He says the principles of electrical and mechanical design carry over, but the scale is vastly different. Instead of millions of devices intended for mass consumption, Zehner and his team are building a fleet of thousands of robots.

The pivot also marks a return to the startup environment where he began his industrial career. Before Amazon, he worked for E Ink, the company that developed the paper-like display technology used in the Kindle.

Zehner said it’s exciting to work in a company’s formative stage where he has a direct sense of his role in a product’s successes — and its failures. Right now, Coco is looking to a future where the vehicles are operated autonomously rather than by remote drivers. That means his team is developing camera systems, ultrasonic and radar sensors, and the computing capability to map the world and give driving directions to the robot.

“It’s truly interdisciplinary work, which I find a lot of fun,” Zehner said. “I feel like I get paid to do my hobby.”

An exercise in adaptability

Beth Parker Visscher, ’01, joined ElliptiGO, manufacturer of the first elliptical bicycle, as vice president of operations in 2010, two years after the company’s founding, and built its business operations from scratch. But even she couldn’t have predicted the impact a global pandemic would have on her business.

“That first week of the pandemic, our sales skyrocketed,” she said. “We quickly figured out that we were going to run out of product.”

Visscher began working with vendors to meet the needs of customers looking for new ways to stay fit at home. Time, however, was not on her side. Supply chain disruptions caused delays, leaving the company “in backorder for almost a year and half,” she said. When product finally started rolling in, newly available vaccines were prompting a return to pre-pandemic activities. Sales started to decline.

“We had already started to put the brakes on production,” Visscher said. “We hadn’t actually seen a decline in sales, but we were predicting we probably would. If we hadn’t started to push orders out and make cancellations early on, we would’ve been in a worse spot.”

Visscher found ways to support essential but cash-strapped suppliers by purchasing their parts and reselling them online as spares, creating a new revenue stream. The company also reined in its own costs by opening a warehouse. “I researched, did all the modeling,” she said. “It’s been a huge, huge, cost savings for us.”

The ups and downs of the pandemic have made Visscher, who previously worked in sales operations at DC Shoes, Quiksilver, and Adio Footwear, more opportunistic and more apt to question processes that were always standard practice.

“Sometimes you get put in these challenges and then pivot what you’re doing to make it work, and it creates real opportunity,” she said. “The pandemic opened us up to things we never really thought to do before.”

The power of parks

Expansive wetlands make Constitution Lakes Park near Atlanta an inviting stopover for migratory birds piloting their seasonal change of scenery. Open, outdoor space was also just what Rachel Maher, ’07, needed at the height of the pandemic. She couldn’t meet up with friends at restaurants, but they could take a walk in a park, something she did often.

Parks are both a personal and professional interest for Maher. She is director of communications and policy for a nonprofit called Park Pride, which champions small parks and the communities they serve. The organization works with more than 100 Friends of the Park groups in the Atlanta area, providing resources for neighborhoods that want to improve their local parks.

“A lot of the larger parks have dedicated park conservancies,” she said. “One of the ways that we think about Park Pride is as a park conservancy for the rest of the parks.”

Interest in the quality of green spaces in the Atlanta area is strong right now, she said. During the pandemic, visitor rates at public parks soared and reminded many people of their value to communities. At the same time, some of these same people saw a need for better upkeep and more community involvement in the parks they visited. Green spaces also have the attention of Andre Dickens, Atlanta’s mayor, who formed a green space advisory council that includes 13 nonprofits. Maher is the group’s facilitator as it provides the mayor’s office with input and guidance, elevates issues, and helps shape the implementation of Atlanta’s 10-year master plan for parks and recreation adopted in 2021.

“We have never had this kind of momentum, and we’ve never worked this closely with our partners or the mayor’s team before” she said. “Everybody’s very optimistic about the future of Atlanta’s parks. It’s a really good time to be doing the work that I’m doing.”

Making a federal case out of it, happily

After nearly a decade of legal practice, Dan Warhola, ’09, is still invigorated by the chance to articulate an argument and think on his feet.

After graduating from the University of Denver’s law school in 2013, he began making his case in courtrooms as a state prosecutor in Colorado. But he always kept his sights set on a federal role.

Warhola got that chance in August 2022 when he landed a position as an assistant United States attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado. He works in the Transnational Organized Crime and Money Laundering section, where he focuses on prosecuting narcotics offenses. In particular, he targets the trafficking of fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and other controlled substances.

“It’s a lot more working hands-on with investigations and agents who are leading bigger, longer, and more complex investigations,” he said. “That’s one thing that really piqued my interest.”

Every day is different. He might be learning the processes and procedures of working for the U.S. Department of Justice, writing legal briefs in preparation for court appearances, reviewing pre-sentencing investigation reports, or litigating a case.

Warhola appeared at his first solo federal hearing in October. While state prosecutors are inundated with hundreds of cases at a time, he said, assistant U.S. attorneys typically carry lower case numbers. However, the cases are more sophisticated, and attorneys are expected to be prepared with comprehensive research and finely tuned arguments.

In the end, however, he said it was satisfying to argue his position and have the court agree.

“As prosecutors, we’re known to wear what’s called the white hat, and I love that,” he said. “We’re held to a higher standard. We have to understand our cases and what’s appropriate. That combination of being persuasive and executing justice — that’s rewarding.”

AMBER ROUDETTE, ’13

Diverse pets — and vets

By the time she was 5 or 6 years old, Amber Roudette, ’13, knew what to tell grown-ups when they asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. She wanted to treat illnesses and send patients home feeling better. However, her patients needed to have key features: fur, feathers, or scales.

“I just honestly … never really had that interest in the human side of [medicine],” says Roudette, a veterinarian in Charlottesville, Virginia. “I’ve just always felt that I kind of like that my patients don’t look like me.”

Roudette treats a variety of pets, from your standard cat and dog to reptiles and even a peacock. Her most common case is the annual wellness visit, which includes vaccines, heartworm testing, and flea and tick prevention. A typical checkup also requires Roudette to examine all parts of the body and look for abnormalities such as masses on the abdomen or swelling.

Even though she spends most of her time with animals, part of Roudette’s job is working with humans. “Half of the challenge is figuring out what’s going on with the sick pet and trying to get them feeling better. But the other half is definitely comforting the owner, explaining things to them without overwhelming them,” she says.

She often discusses uncomfortable topics with her patients’ owners. They range from financial issues to the severity of an illness to euthanasia. Veterinary science is not only a medical field; it is an emotional field.

Despite the emotional challenges, Roudette finds pride in her work. It allows her to meet diverse owners. It gives her the opportunity to treat exotic animals. Most importantly, it allows her to pursue her dream and, as a Black woman, diversify her profession so that more pet owners see someone who looks like them when they come in for care.

“Just because you don’t look like the vets that you know doesn’t mean you can’t be a vet,” she says.

Another kind of campus tour

Runners and walkers in ones and twos are familiar on campus. But for one day this spring, they’ll number in the hundreds. On March 25, the university is hosting its first-ever 5K for the campus community as part of broader efforts to promote health and well-being on campus. Richmond’s natural beauty takes center stage on the course, and breakfast in Heilman Dining Center awaits everyone at the end.

There are Spiders everywhere.

AND THAT’S A GOOD THING.

Bright minds arrive at the University of Richmond with the expectation to exceed expectations. Their ambition combines with Richmond’s innovative programs, weaving together in ways that invite Spiders to grow, evolve, and succeed. This web of excellence propels Spiders from Richmond to all corners of the globe. richmond.edu

A RELAXING SPOT

With natural décor and a vibe that oozes “aaaah,” the Well-Being Center is an oasis of mindfulness, self-care, and community. It opened in 2021.
