NOTE FROM THE

PUBLISHER executives, producers, sound engineers, roadies and etc. We also give respect to music veterans and legends that have paved the way in sustaining and growing urban music in South Africa. Our publication specializes in entertainment art and music development, with an aim to provide an accessible, affordable and sustainable community based platform which will respond to the needs of emerging and established artists in all genres (music, drama and dance) to ensure that they are developed to the level of marketing and economical viable professionals. We give an insight on the importance of buying original music in a fight against music piracy and look at the opportunities that are available for aspiring musicians and artists as we profile programmes like the Arts & Culture Trust Scholarship. Hip Hop has taken over this year, as we celebrate the youth month and try to encourage our sons and daughters to grab the opportunities that are before them, it is only right to profile talented young women that have made their mark and claimed the spot in the rap game.

Unleashing only best in the music & entertainment hub As the South Africa's number one music and entertainment magazine we pay a special tribute to the artists that passed away in the 2014/2015 calendar, the likes of Flabba, Johnny Dimba, Bujo Mujo, Lulu Dikane, and many more others that have contributed immensely in creation and promotion of our South African music. Urban Sounds Magazine celebrates 21 years of our democracy with a focus in addressing the ever challenging issues of musicians, independent record companies, event organizers and music promoters. We serve as an edutainment guide for musicians and music lovers, as we cover entertainment industry news, artist profiles & music reviews, book reviews & movie reviews, television music shows, music venues, concert & festival news, live performances & live shows, music academy institutions, people behind the music label

Trevor Noah has proven without a doubt that there are huge opportunities in the creative industry, not only locally but as well as abroad, one only needs to love and perfect his or her skill than the sky is the limit. The uncomfortable truth of success and fortune is that it can only be achieved by people who work hard and this has been testified by the true Hustler himself Gayton McKenzie. Urban Sounds Magazine is all about empowering the youth and unleashing only the best in the music and entertainment hub. “Nothing limits achievement like small thinking, nothing expands possibilities like unleashed imagination. There is a bigger picture,” she asserts. Having recently moved from Cape Town to Johannesburg after signing to After Life Talent,

South African Film & Television Awards The South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA), also known as the Golden Horns, are awards for film and television presented in South Africa and first given out in 2006. They are awarded by the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa (NFVF). All SAFTA winners are presented with the Golden Horn, the official SAFTA Trophy. The faces on the statues are derived from artifacts of African heritage that date back to 800 AD and were discovered near Lydenburg in South Africa, referred to as the Lydenburg Heads. The three figureheads represent excellence in visual creative arts, performance and drama, only South African film and television productions are eligible for the awards. Noah’s Ark To The Daily Show 20

www.urbansoundsmag.co.za

Trevor Noah Born 20 February 1984 is a South African political satirist, writer, producer, DJ, television host, actor, media critic, and comedian. In March 2015, Comedy Central announced that Noah would become the host of The Daily Show, following the departure of Jon Stewart. Nominated as MTV Africa Music Award for Personality of the Year in 2014, Trevor Noah is a polyglot; he speaks several languages including English, German, Xhosa, isiZulu, Sotho, and Afrikaans. Noah's mother, Patricia Noah, is a black South African (Xhosa), and his father, Robert Noah, is white (of Swiss–German descent). His parents' relationship was illegal at the time of his birth, and his mother was jailed and fined by the South African government. His mixed-race heritage and his experiences growing up in a Soweto township, as well as his observations about race and ethnicity are leading themes in his comedy.

www.urbansoundsmag.co.za

Noah had a major role on the South African soap opera Isidingo in 2002, when he was 18. He then began hosting his own radio show Noah's Ark on Gauteng's leading youth radio station, YFM. Noah then went on to host an educational program Run the Adventure from 2004–06 on SABC 2. In 2007 he hosted The Real Goboza, a gossip show on SABC 1 and Siyadlala a SABC's sports show. Noah co-hosted alongside Pabi Moloi on The Amazing Date (dating game-show) in 2008 and was a Strictly Come Dancing (celebrity dance competition) contestant in Season 4. In 2009 he hosted the 3rd Annual South Africa Film and Television Awards (SAFTA Awards) and co-hosted alongside Eugene Khoza on The Axe Sweet Life (reality competition series) at the 15th annual South African Music Awards. In 2010 Noah hosted the 16th annual South African Music Awards and also hosted Tonight with Trevor Noah on MNet (in the second season it moved to DStv's Mzansi Magic Channel). Trevor Noah also became a spokesperson and consumer protection agent for Cell C, South Africa's third largest cellular provider. Noah dropped his radio show and acting to focus on comedy, and has performed with South African comedians such as David Kau, Kagiso Lediga, Riaad Moosa, Darren Simpson, Marc Lottering, Barry Hilton and Nik Rabinowitz and international comedians such as Paul Rodriguez, Carl Barron, Dan Ilic and Paul Zerdin, and as the opening act for

Gabriel Iglesias in November 2007 and Canadian comedian Russell Peters on his South African tour. He has performed all over South Africa in The Blacks Only Comedy Show, Heavyweight Comedy Jam, the Vodacom Campus Comedy Tour, the Cape Town International Comedy Festival, the Jozi Comedy Festival, and Bafunny Bafunny (2010). His stand-up comedy specials in South Africa include The Daywalker (2009), Crazy Normal (2011), That's Racist (2012), and It's My Culture (2013). On 6 January 2012 Noah became the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on The Tonight Show and on 17 May 2013, he became the first to appear on Late Show with David Letterman. Noah was the subject of the 2012 documentary You Laugh But It's True. The same year he starred in the one-man comedy show Trevor Noah: The Racist which was based on his similarly titled South African special That's Racist. In 2013 he performed the comedy special Trevor Noah: African American and On 11 October 2013 he was a guest on BBC Two's comedy panel show QI. On 29 November 2013 he was a panelist on Channel 4 game show 8 Out of

10 Cats, and appeared on Sean Lock's team in 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown on 12 September 2014. In December 2014, Noah became a recurring contributor on The Daily Show. On 30 March 2015, Comedy Central announced that Noah will take over as host of The Daily Show when Jon Stewart leaves later in the year. His tenure will begin in either late 2015 or early 2016. Within hours of his announcement as Stewart's successor, several controversial jokes were brought to light on his Twitter feed that some people deemed offensive to women and Jews. Noah defended himself following the backlash. "To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn't land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian," he tweeted. Comedy Central stood behind Noah, saying in a statement, "Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included...To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.

published or released by the rights holders. The main feature of pirated music is the fact that on face value it doesn't look the same as the original although all sound recordings on the pirated cassette or disc are usually from a previously released legitimate album.

Simple piracy as referred to by the IFPI, is music which has been pirated, meaning that it has been copied (duplicated) from a legitimate or pirated copy, usually by computer without the consent of the rights holder and for commercial gain. There are several elements common to most pirated product of this kind. For one the packaging of pirated product differs from the original. Pirated copies are often compilations - for example, purporting to be the "greatest hits" of a specific artist, or a collection of tracks drawn from a specific genre, such as dance music. Frequently (although not always) these kinds of albums were never www.urbansoundsmag.co.za

Artists and the record companies loose an estimated R500 million each year to piracy. Shwi, Lucky Dube, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Steve Hofmeyr, Chicco, Arno Carstens, Rebecca Malope, Mandoza, Joyous Celebration and the late Brenda Fassie are some of the most pirated artists in South Africa. Music piracy is one of the main reasons why young and upcoming local artists don't make it as artists in South Africa.

Bootleg It is unauthorised recordings of live or broadcast performances. They are duplicated and sold often at a premium price - without the permission of the artist, composer or recording company

Counterfeit It is music copied and packaged to resemble the original as closely as possible. The original producer's trademarks and logos are often reproduced in order to mislead the consumer into believing that they are buying a legitimate product.

Internet Piracy It is music being compressed, posted and transmitted globally via the internet without payment to those who invested in the creation.

Famo music

Famo is a type of music from Lesotho in Africa consisting of a singing accompanied by the accordion, the moropa and skupu drums, these days often made from oil cans because of scarcity of wood and occasionally a bass. Famo consists of male or female singing and ululations; Songs often refer to urban life, and female singers can use their singing to challenge their male counterparts. The music has its origins from the South African mines of the 1920's but is now a popular form of music for Sesotho speakers. It originated in the setolotolo bow, with the

introduction of European instruments, the korosetina (concertina) and koriana (accordion) were adopted. The concertina was initially favoured as it could be played whilst singing and was easily carried but the accordion was eventually favoured for its bigger sound which was better for dancing.

ensembles that were rounded out by a drummer. The moropa drum they used was a 20 litre tar can topped by a piece of inner tube as the drumhead, with manyenenyene, metal bottle tops or jangles, to provide a jingling alternative to the thump of the drum. The drumsticks themselves were made from slices of tire.

The music and singing combination of famo was performed in the shebeens where the workers drank and chatted and also down in the mines whilst they toiled. The name famo came from the phrase ho re famo, to flare the nostrils or to throw up one's garments. The dancing girls who had followed the men to South Africa and entertained them in the shebeens perfected a dance with their short skirts that allowed them to artfully flick up the skirt, exposing their naked rear.

Since the 1920s music companies had been looking for African music they could commercialise. What turned the music of the shebeens into a national music for the Basotho was the rise of major recording personalities amongst the famo ensembles. In the late 1960s the first major recording artists to

In 1963 reforms to South African regulations meant the repatriation of thousands of women and famo performers and shebeen dancers were forced back to Lesotho. This encouraged the creation of www.urbansoundsmag.co.za

The pair met and honed their musical act in the mines and shebeens but their success with albums such as Peete Kea Falla released by EMI led Ntabanyane to leave and set up his own group.

Later successful artists include David Sello Motaung's Tau ea Linare in the 1980s and southern Lesotho's Mahosana Akaphamong. It was hard for many to give up their normal jobs and make a living from famo performances and records, but some shebeens would offer paid competitions for female singers, the most renowned being Puseletso Seema, a veteran with 40 years of performance experience.

Mandla “The King Don Father” Mafokeng started his music career as a dancer in 1985, under the guidance of South African musician Sello “Chicco” Twala. He later formed as a disco group called MM Deluxe with friend M'du Masilela in 1988. This duo recorded two successful albums

in 1989 and 1990 and introduced what came to be known as township kwaito today. He is one of the master minds of the Dangerous Combination Crew and the CoFounder/Director of the most influential record label in Kwaito music Kalawa Jazzmee. Spikiri is a seminal founder member of the original pantsula group Trompies and has made successful contributions in music production through his musical diversity and talent he has produced award winning tracks for Mafikizolo, Kabelo, Hugh Masikela, Don Laka, Vicky Vilakazi and Hhashi Elimhlophe.

MM Deluxe a disco group consisting of the two biggest kwaito stars of the 90's, inspired by Sello “Chicco” Twala, “Where were you” was a slick early house album made without any real instruments, the missing link between bubblegum and kwaito. The album featured tracks like New Generation, Hipo-Jo, Muchacho and Hurry Up, released by Cool Spot Productions and produced by Monwa & Son. This was the beginning of another musical journey as the two musicians, M'du and Spikiri later went their separate ways to unleash a string of hits in the new genre

called kwaito music. M'du worked with musicians like Pat Shange, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Chicco at Dephon to gain more experience and exposure. He started experimenting with sound, mixing European and township sounds to create new sound. In 1990 he found himself working with Peter Snyman as producer and engineer and released LA Beat, which did very well and encouraged him to continue with production, while Spikiri joined M'Du's brother-in-law Jairus Nkwe, Eugene Mthethwa and Zynne Sibika to form a kwaito music group called Trompies. The name was insipred by a naughty, always-in-trouble but bright kid in an Afrikaans cartoon titled Trompie En Die Boksombende."

Great from Experience Magix Music Software Glancing at the broad product portfolio of software specialist MAGIX, Ăt's easy to forget that everything started years ago with some of the first music software for PC. Music Maker appeared as the first product from MAGIX Technology GmbH. The common idea of making Samplitude's technology accessible to everyone by combining it with musical content (Music Maker) provided the four founders with their first hit in the industry. From its beginnings with music software to its current product portfolio of over 60 products in Germany alone, the company has grown considerably, changed locations in Germany, opened branches in nearly every European country, and changed its entire corporate structure. However, the vision has remained to make this technology accessible to every PC user. "Our vision to make innovative multimedia technology accessible to

private users was often doubted back then," outlines MAGIX General Manager JĂźrgen Jaron. "Computers were purely devices for calculation and not intended for brightening up everyday life with music, videos, and photos. In retrospect, we can say that we took the right step by working to make this vision a reality. Innovation is still our motto, and that's why the majority of our company's investment goes into product development." In the beginning, there was single vision music software However, advanced users are not left out, since individual song passages can now be edited in detail with the help of the Object Microscope, among other features. It all started with music software, but the vision of making multimedia technology available to everyone has endured for all these years.

SHWELE BAWO DATE: 5 - 29 AUGUST 2015 VENUE: MOMENTUM THEATRE WRITTEN BY: MOTSHABI TYELELE DIRECTED BY: LYNNE MAREE STARRING: MOTSHABI TYELELE Shwele Bawo looks at the juxtaposition of old traditions fighting for survival against modern ways in South Africa and the effect this has on society. Through the story of the protagonist, Dikeledi Nkabinde, told retrospectively from Dikeledi's place of imprisonment, many themes create multiple layers for thought: identity crises among men and women, the disintegration of family structures, women and child abuse, relationships, incest, the power of the media and the inequalities in our justice system, all come under the spotlight. The play reveals how these issues, ignored for far too long, have created a social time bomb of secrets and lies that threaten to destroy our society.

townships where they came from and give faces and names to the fallen brothers, sons, fathers and uncles. Twenty years into our democracy, can we say that we are a tolerant society if we can lose so many lives at our own hands? The killing did not start on the day of the shooting and after it started it spread like wildfire and “Tomorrow morning, the men will sing again. Their spears, pangas, inculas and sticks will clatter menacingly. They will recite battle cries from their homelands, and move about in organized columns, raising clouds of dust. But 34 of them will sing for the very last time”.

Marikana the Musical is a new South African Musical adapted from the book “We Are Going to Kill Each Other Today”. This explosive musical returns to the stage after a successful season at The South African State Theatre in 2014. Marikana The Musical will return with the same cast and team and will continue to heal, educate, mourn and most importantly, do justice to the arts and the story. Sello “Chicco Twala Laid the foundation

for Afropop & Kwaito Music Born in 1963, Sello "Chicco" Twala developed a passion for music from a young age. His ambition saw him joining soul bands such as Umoja and Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse's Harari in the 1970s. Chicco later formed his own group - Image. The group lifted him to the next level in the industry, recording no less than 12 albums within a period of 10 years. In 1986 Image got the attention of world class music producer Tony Visconti. Visconti was well known for producing for the likes of Paul McCartney and David Bowie.

38

In the mid-80s, Chicco became one of South Africa's sought after musicians as a solo artist. An architect of the disco and bubblegum revolution, he became an instant hit with the youth of the time when he released sing-along tracks such as Teacher we Love You and We can Dance. He went on to create major stars such as Yvonne Chaka-Chaka and Brenda Fassie & the Big Dudes. His partnership with Fassie became one of the most successful ones in South African music history.

In 1989, he released one of his most popular classics, We Miss You Manelo – which was released as calls to have Mandela freed gathered momentum. During a time of sanctions and censorship, the hit, among others played a critical role in sending out a strong message about the struggle and freedom. The song was a commercial success and achieved triple platinum status. His enigmatic work was also exhibited when he composed I am Winning for Yvonne Chaka Chaka. The song spoke about and paid tribute to Winnie Mandela. To spread his wings and message Chicco along with Secunda Boys

composed a song of dedication to the then Mozambican President Samora Machel. The song Some More Cherry featured on an album produced by Chicco for allgirl trio “Chimora” in 1989. His somewhat controversial approach challenged the apartheid system and political oppression throughout the continent in some very unconventional ways. During this time Chicco also catapulted Brenda Fassie to the top with Too Late for Mama. In 1990 Twala went a gear up and wrote Black President for Brenda Fassie, one of the greatest dedications to Madiba. Another one of his great hits was Papa

Stop the War which featured poet, Mzwakhe Mbuli and was a direct cry to Nelson Mandela. In 1992, he released the peace narrative, the Peace Song, recorded by an all-star South African cast. Peace Song was in line with the late founding democratic President Nelson Mandela's reconciliatory tone for a new South Africa. In 1996, in the new democratic Republic of South Africa, Chicco released Black Man, White Wife, reflecting on the new democracy and the transformation that South Africa was undergoing as a 'rainbow' nation. In the same year, he produced Brenda Fassie's hit, Memeza, which went on to sell over half-amillion copies and in 1999, he was the force behind the hugely successful DJ Walker project, Chesa Mpama. Some of the songs he composed were selected by Walt Disney for the 'Lion King II'; in particular, I Wanna See the Moon, in the Return to Pride Rock album, originally released in 1998, and re-released in 2004. Today, Chicco is still a force to be reckoned with. He has played a pivotal role in the careers of a number of contemporary South African music household names. Singer, producer, arranger and instrumentalist, Chicco has been a solid icon in the South African music industry and deserves a salute. – SAMRO
