12 TECHNOLOGY A FRIEND OR FOE The times are changing and nowhere more rapidly than in the music industry. SAMRO’s Xolani Zulu, Accounts Executive for Mechanical Rights, shares his insights on how technology presents music creators with more opportunities than threats. Technology knows no borders. Take IT and infuse it with music… you are guaranteed a lifestyle so big, it created the Gangnam Style and now the

demand, according to the recent Digital Music Report 2013, published by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. According to the report, technology in the form of digital music piracy is the greatest single enemy of the music industry. But in marketing circles, they call it “conversion” when threats or risks are turned into opportunities. Streaming is one of the tools being successfully used by the music industry to turn the threat of technology into revenuegenerating opportunities. Music streaming is as good for consumers as it is for music creators and for the industry as a whole. In Sweden, for example, sales of recorded music – which had long been stagnant or in decline – grew by almost 14% in 2012, and by 7% in Norway. This growth can be directly attributed to positive developments in the licensing and regulation of music streaming services. Video streaming is the most popular form of streaming. On YouTube, for example, 90% of the most popular videos are music related. Satisfaction with legal digital music services, including internet radio, sits at 77% globally. This is a compelling customer satisfaction rating, achieved by what many thought was a failing industry. Audio or video streaming can take many forms. Webcasts, podcasts and on-demand streaming are just some of the better-known music streaming services available. Each of these and other related uses is licensed by SAMRO.

Harlem Shake phenomena. We all remember the bad old days when technology was viewed with great suspicion and paranoia by the music industry. Some of those fears carried weight. But this is new era and the music industry fortunately has legal and copyright systems in its corner of the ring. Last year, the UK High Court ruled that internet service providers must censor file-sharing site the Pirate Bay. Search engines like www.google.co.uk are finally joining the fight against piracy by, for example, down-ranking such websites in their search results. As a result, the music industry continues to ride the technology wave across cultures, classes and income levels. Music consumption is higher than ever. The momentum is driven by consumer

Book Review

Powerful and inspired, DO YOU! Is a rare blend of business acumen, fierce spiritual faith and priceless advice. Since rising out of the New York City streets over 25 years ago, Russell Simmons has helped create such ground breaking ventures as Def Jam Records, Phat Farm and Def Comedy Jam, in the process becoming known to the world over as “The CEO of Hip Hop.” Russell might have helped introduce hip-hop to the world, but he credits his success to his belief in a strong set of principlesor laws--which he shares for the first time in this book. In 12 straight forward steps, Russell reveals a path towards success that can be followed not only by those looking to duplicate his professional success, but anyone struggling to realize their dreams. Indeed, those solely looking for advice on how to build up their bank accounts at the expense

of personal integrity should probably look elsewhere. That’s because these laws stem from the belief that all success, be it professional or personal, comes from a connection with your higher self. Using examples from his own experiences and observations, Russell demonstrates how tapping into that connection will allow you to get your mind right, find the motivation to start instead of stall, surround yourself with the right people, appreciate the power of hard work and understand the power of karma. But most importantly, this book will demonstrate how it’s impossible to receive any sort of lasting success from the world without giving something of lasting value to the world first. That’s a practice that is reflected in Russell’s own work as a mentor and philanthropist and one that he promotes as being fundamental to empowerment and success on every level. Blending business insight, universal spiritual truths and an inspired sense of purpose DO YOU! crosses the lines of age, race and background with wisdom that will lift you up and motivate you to pursue your vision. The Meditators opened for The Parlotones in 2011 and Mango Groove in 2012 at The Botanic Gardens in PMB and Durban respectively.

Chilling at uShaka Marine sipping cocktails, enjoying the cool breeze and watching the tide splashing against the peer we met up with the one of the original reggae groups of the Durban. The Meditators a musical group that has represent South Africa in world stages with their funky yet motivational sounds of Rasta music. Who are The Meditators, when was the band formed? The Meditators was formed in 1992, in Johannesburg and moved to Durban 2000 and joined up with I-Land Crew and Sista Free.

How can you describe your music, what makes it unique? The music is original roots reggae, a combination of sweet melodies, intelligent POSITIVE lyrics and solutions to life’s struggles! It is happy music!

What defines The Meditators, their beliefs and values? The Meditators are defined by the belief and practice of Unity Consciousness. We are all ONE defines the way we live, knowing that the basis of all experience is CAUSE AND EFFECT. This makes it easy to be conscious when making choices, knowing that by making the best choice for SELF one is making the highest choice for the WHOLE. The band believes that

Unity is strength and WE are a tight knit family that supports one another through good times and bad.

Where do they draw their inspiration? Inspiration comes from all around – Nature, Relationships, and Society, what we see around us every day and understanding the power of music to affect change in thinking and awareness. Love is the most powerful healing force on the planet and the key to freedom and peace on earth. Music has a way of connecting people heart to heart and we believe music and art to be sacred Jah’s works. This inspires the band to continue keeping on.

The Meditators has recorded four albums, which album will they say is their favourite and better explains who they are? Jah Kingdom is the most popular album and the bands favourite because it embodies the

spirit of The Meditators. ‘Jah Kingdom’ delivers a message about Heaven on Earth. Right here, right now. Also the track CELEBRATE is a song of thanksgiving and gratitude for Life itself.

The band has performed and shared the stage with many huge artists, which performance stands out for the band and that they always look back on? Tony Rebel and Queen Ifrika In 2011 from Jamaica, and Linton Kwesi Johnson UK in 2009 definitely stand out as highlights. Also Nkulee Dube (Lucky Dube’s daughter) headlined the Bob Marley Earth Day Tribute Concert at uShaka Marine World in February 2013 with The Meditators as her backing band.

Blazing the stage with the icon Rita Marley and the I’Threes of Jamaica must have been a blast, share the experience? That was in 2004 Women’s Day celebrations at the Bat Centre - Rita and the I Threes arrived more than 2 hours late for the show, they were chilling on Umhlanga Beach apparently!!! But the band almost took the roof off in a performance of Redemption Song with Rita on stage in 2009 at Zulu Jazz Lounge, when she brought the Bob Marley photo exhibition to the City Hall in Durban. We celebrated Bob Marley’s Earth day at the Beach Café, North Beach at Sunrise that morning with Rita and family and friends and elders from the Rastafarian Community. How has the music industry been treating you? The music industry is slowly becoming more reggae friendly in SA, thanks to bands and artists like The Meditators, Azania, Tidal Waves, One People Band and Nkulee Dube who are busy on the production side as well as out there performing in and out of SA. We continue to push for more recognition, radio airplay, legitimate (not lip service) inclusion in the SAMA’S and mainstream radio play listing.

What keeps you motivated? The power of love, the love of music and knowing that the work being done is significant. It is meaningful and important to all the members of the Meditators family. Regular gigs keep us

inspired to carry on because you know where there is a demand and people love the music, there is value, and we place big value on each member’s contribution and commitment to the band.

What advice would you give the aspiring musicians? NEVER GIVE UP and collaborate with as many other musicians and artists as possible when the opportunity arises.

MM Deluxe a disco group consisting of the two biggest kwaito stars of the 90’s, Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng and Mduduzi “The Godfather” Masilela. Inspired by Sello “Chicco” Twala, “Where were you” was a slick early house album made without any real instruments, the missing link between bubblegum and kwaito. The album featured tracks like New Generation, Hip-o-Jo, Muchacho and Hurry Up, released by Cool Spot Productions and produced by Monwa& Son. This was the beginning of another musical journey as the two musicians, M’du and Spikiri later went their separate ways to unleash a string of hits in the new genre called kwaito music. M’du worked with musicians like Pat Shange, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Chicco at Dephon to gain more experience and exposure. He started experimenting with sound, mixing European and township sounds to create new sound. In 1990 he found himself working with Peter Snyman as producer and engineer and released LA Beat, which did very well and encouraged him to continue with production, while Spikiri joined M’Du’s brother-in-law JairusNkwe, Eugene Mthethwa and ZynneSibika to form a kwaito music group called Trompies. The name was insipred by a naughty, always-in-trouble but bright kid in an Afrikaans cartoon titled Trompie En Die Boksombende.”

Mbaqanga is a style of South African music with rural Zulu roots that continues to influence musicians worldwide today. The style originated in the early 1960s and developed in the South African shebeens, its use of western instruments allowed mbaqanga to develop into a South African version of jazz. Musically, the sound indicated a mix between western instru-

mentation and South African vocal style. The genre gained popularity as a result of radio play by stations under the South African Broadcasting Corporation. Early artists included Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Letta Mbulu and Simon Mahlathini Nkabinde, one of the most well-known mbaqanga singers and arguably the most famous mbaqanga “groaner”, nicknamed the “lion of Soweto”. Mbaqanga maintained its popularity until the 1980s when it was replaced by South African pop music known as bubblegum. Bubblegum is a genre

highly influenced by mbaqanga. One of the earliest innovators of mbaqanga was the Makgona Tsohle Band, a group comprising five domestic workers from Pretoria - Marks Mankwane (lead guitar), Joseph Makwela (bass guitar), Vivian Ngubane (rhythm guitar), Lucky Monama (drums) and West Nkosi (saxophone). Mbaqanga, a Zulu word for steamed cornbread, fused

marabi and kwela influences. The cyclic structure of marabi melded with traditional dance styles such as the Zulu indlamu, combined with big band swing. The indlamu input developed into the “African stomp” style, giving a notably African rhythmic impulse to the music and making it quite irresistible to its new audiences. Rupert Bopape, enticed by the successful Gallo Record Company to be their African production manager, brought together the musicians of the Makgona Tsohle Band with Mahlathini and a new female chorus, the

Mahotella Queens. This was when mbaqanga really took off - or more specifically, “vocal mbaqanga” later nicknamed simanje-manje or mgqashiyo. In addition to Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, singing stars such as Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe and Letta Mbulu who had all began as marabi stars during the ‘50s created a large base of fans, as did the Dark City Sisters and the Soul Brothers.

Mbaqanga’s popularity faded during the 1970s because of the influence of Western pop, soul and disco into South Africa. Public performances declined because labor migrants no longer wanted to be in the spotlight. Additionally, audiences sought more urbanized language, vocal, and instrumental styles. However, it was revived between 1983 and 1986. The reversal of fortunes was in part due to Paul Simon’s incorporation of South African music into his Graceland album (1986) and subsequent tour. Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens’ appearances at festivals in France and at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday concert in Wembley Stadium, London in 1988 signaled its return. White South African musicians influenced by this style include singer song-writer Robin Auld. Veteran Afrikaans piano accordion player Nico Carstens produced a boereqanga hit with Viva Madiba. Mbaqanga was fully replaced as the dominant music genre in the 1980s by a new urban

genre called ‘bubblegum.’ An Afro-dance pop, Bubblegum was mainly influenced by mbaqanga and other popular African styles. With the introduction of television in 1976, this musical genre was promoted as music across all ethnic groups. Characterized as a representation of a move towards music that was more urban than traditional,

the Bubblegum genre had many successful musicians, including Chico Twala, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Brenda Fassie. The derivation of mbaqanga into bubblegum contributed enormously towards the development of kwaito.

Several mbaqanga acts are still recording and performing today,

including the Mahotella Queens and the Soul Brothers. Mbaqanga also continues to influence musicians worldwide. For example, the Norwegian group Real Ones included a tribute track, All the Way Back (Shades of Mbaqanga), on their 2003 album This Is Camping.

The Groovy boys, the Soul Brothers, the Kings of township jive After the Soweto student uprising of 1976 and its violent suppression, young South Africans stepped up the fight against apartheid. In this context, traditional pop and mbaqanga gave way to music modelled on American soul, and later disco. Soul bands like the Movers rarely addressed politics directly, but they rejected the ethnic associations used to divide people under apartheid and embraced the international sound purveyed by the likes of Wilson Pickett and Percy Sledge.

The Soul Brothers, the band that would most successfully realize the South African soul concept, grew out of a group called the Groovy Boys in Natal in 1970, led by bassist Zenzele “Zakes” Mchunu. Zakes, along with drummer David Masondo and guitarist Tuza Mthethwa, went to work in textile factory when the Groovy Boys failed to pay the rent. They changed the group’s name to Young Brothers, but the real turning point came when they moved to

Johannesburg. Life was tough for the band as they sought jobs and lived in abandoned buildings. Their first break came when they recorded with The Mthembu Queens. In 1974, they changed their name to Soul Brothers. David Masondo came forward to sing with his unique, quavering voice. The band then recruited organist Moses Ngwenya in 1976, and he added a unique, Booker T, Jimmy Smith element with his powerful Hammond B-3 playing.

29

From the moment they recorded their first two singles in 1976, the Soul Brothers were consistent hit makers. The band’s township jive and mbaqanga beats, combined with Ngwenya’s billowing organ riffs and Masondo’s shimmering, breathy vocal sound, caught on fast and inspired many imitators. A series of untimely deaths then hit the band, starting in 1979 when Tuza Mthethwa and one of the sax players died in a car accident. The band’s stylish rhythm guitarist American Zulu left the band in 1982, and in 1984, founding member Zakes Mchunu also died in a car crash.

David Masondo and Moses Ngwenya faced a moment of truth at this point and even considered disbanding the group out of fear that it was somehow jinxed. But they found the strength to go on, and the 13-piece juggernaut lineup they created in 1985 is still going strong today, featuring five singers with tight dance moves, and three saxophones led by sax jive veteran Thomas Phale, the Soul Brothers’ teamwork on stage in legendary, and now world famous following international releases and tours in the 1990s. Even before their first international tour in 1990, the Soul Brothers had sold four million albums in South Africa, and they remain the one township jive act to survive the rise of disco, bubblegum, and now kwaito music. With over 30 albums to their credit, the Soul Brothers now operate recording studios, a record company and a publishing business. They stand as one of the great success stories of South African music.

T

o celebrate music and the talents of our young South African women that continue to possess greatness and admiration against all odds, ladies who always seize the opportunities and platforms to express their inner beauty. Who is better suited for this profile other than the singing sensation, songwriter, performer and a big little diva Nomfusi Gotyana. We got the opportunity to have a sit down with this young lovely and bubble songstress just to have an understanding of where she draws her inspiration.

Please tell a little of your background where you were born and raised? I grew up in Kwazakhele township outside of Port Elizabeth with my two siblings and my mother who was a domestic worker. Take us back to when you started being a singer? After completing school I moved to Cape Town, and became a worship leader at the Way of Life Church in Khayelitsha. During that time I got a waitressing job at a diner restaurant where I was expected to sing between serving tables. I was better at the singing part! You got your big break 2009, how did it feel? I think I got a series of smaller breaks in my career so far which have collectively amounted to something big, but there was no defining “bang” moment. I feel blessed for all opportunities that have come my way. Getting a scholarship for singing and songwriting from the Born to Be Famous Academy was a good starting point where I also met my manager Philip de Villiers. He introduced me to my current label Universal Music and my publishers Universal Publishing. It lead to my first album release in 2009, “Kwazibani.” How was it to represent one of the greatest female legend such as Meriam Makeba? It was a truly humbling experience. Mama Miriam was not only a musician. She was a mother, an activist, a wife, she got married six times! I sang a liberation song from her early career, “Mayibuye Afrika.” Tell us more about your current album, and what it means to you have worked with Ringo, Robbie Malinga and Dj clock, how was the experience? It was a challenge since Ringo is such a veteran in the studio, I am not going to lie it was intimidating! When it comes to singing on stage I am very confident, but the studio environment still leaves me cold. Him being a producer who is also a very good singer, he guided me beautifully with my vocals and his musical arrangements are out of this world! Robbie and M’Jakes were wonderful. They were warm and the sessions were fun. With DJ Clock it was a new experience to work with a musician who works with a different medium. The writing sessions were fruitful though and contributed three beautiful tracks to the album. Who would you like to collaborate with in the future and why? Zakes Bantwini - so I can reach a younger audience AND Tina Turner - so I can faint from excitement! How do you stay humble and true to yourself in this industry? Just being grounded in the realities of life and taking each day as it comes. In this industry today you’re up, tomorrow you’re down. It’s important to connect with real people around you who have normal lives who can still enjoy the small things in life and don’t have to be the centre of attention to be happy. What advice would u give to young female artist? Develop your skills, not only as a singer, but as a fully rounded musician. Study an instrument besides your voice like piano or guitar. Develop your songwriting skills or if that’s not your cup of tea team up with writers. You’re not going to crack it out there as a cover singer, the world is hungry for new material.

You were nominated for the Sama’s and Metro awards what did that mean to you? It was great to be acknowledged for my work and to be in the same categories as musicians that I admire. What are the highlights of your career? The privilege of doing music as a day job since 2009 on a global scale is one continuous highlight. How is performing internationally or the reception different from performing at home in terms of audience? They long for the Motherland, therefore they become quite emotional to hear African sounds, especially the Xhosa clicks. They mostly don’t understand the language I sing, but yet connect with the story. Back home, audiences find specific meaning in my songs that’s specifically relevant to them, like Nontsokolo, Ungamyeki, Kunjalo, HayiSuka...they also become emotional, but it’s because my songs speak very directly to them. Overseas it’s more about the entertainment value and the enjoyment of the music. I know you’ve achieved a lot in your life, but the sky is the limit, what do you still want to achieve? An international hit record. I want to be as big as Aretha or Mama Angelique Kidjo. Who is your biggest influence? Most likely Tina Turner. What can people expect from your new album? “Take Me Home” features beautiful songs, beautifully arranged and produced. It will creep under your skin and grow on you. It also has a beautiful album sleeve with English translations of all the songs and pictures taken in and around Nyanga East. How do you give back to the community, and what does it mean to you to help people? I go to schools with my band and give motivational talks, and we teach music workshops like singing, drumming and songwriting. Making the world a better place, what does that mean to you and how do you understand that? Making a world a better place means freedom of the mind and knowledge. It starts with yourself, knowing who you are, knowing your short falls and strengths and being free from fear. Saying that, I don’t think i can ever succeed in making this world a better place. We need each other, church, education system, parents, businesses ....every system out there and what will fail us is greed. A better world is a world where everyone can sleep in peace. What are your favorite’s albums? Nneka - Uncomfortable Truth, Thandiswa Mazwai – Ibokhwe. Take me home – Nomfusi, Lauren Hill Unplugged AND Tina Turner - Workin’ Together What is your current play list? Try - Pink, I will survive - Gloria Gayonor, Ingoma – Thandiswa Mazwai, Ungamyeki - Nomfusi (written by RingoMadlingozi), Proud Mary - Tina Turner If you were have to bring back one of your fallen legends or artist who would it be and why? Brenda Fassie because she always gave her best as if it was her last performance. For performances and the latest on Nomfusi visit: www.nomfusi.com, follow @NomfusiSA and www.facebook. com/biglittlediva

the industry. He is a singer and songwriter and has worked with many great international artists, icons of the music business backing live performances by Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, John Legend Beyonce, Celine Dion, Bebe, Deborah Cox and Westlife amongst others. “Bheki Nene has a honey coated soulful voice... a touch of R&B, afro-pop, jazz and gospel...” Lawrence Matshiza (renowned South African producer and hit maker) In South Africa he has worked with the late Miriam Makeba, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Hugh Masekela, Judith Sephuma, Malaika, Lira, Danny K, The Parlotones, Vicky Vilakazi, Sibongile Khumalo, Tshepho Tshola, Themba Mkhize to name a few.

BHEKI NENE WORLD CLASS He is one of the original and leading vocalists of the multi- award winning Soweto Gospel Choir the group that won the 2007 & 2008 Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music. Bheki Nene is spreading his wings, using his talents to direct and choreograph the Tshwane Gospel Choir, a unit formed in 2010 and destined for global acclaim. This is in addition to his solo endeavours as Bheki is also currently in studio recording his anticipated debut album simply entitled Abantu. It is a project produced by Lawrence Matshiza, who has also produced for Judith Sephuma, Siphokazi, Busi Mhlongo and Ringo Madlingozi.

Bheki’s unique selling point and what sets him apart from his contemporaries is his depth and versatility. He captures the spirit of old school music legends yet he just as competently delivers the tempo of his pop contemporaries. His sound is best defined as refined and he is without doubt one of the sparkling gems in South Africa’s musical landscape. Jazz, soul, gospel, pop and African melodies, Bheki delivers them all in a breathtaking manner. Born in Soweto, Bheki started singing at a very tender age and always involved himself with the community. At the age 13 he was singing professionally, working with the top names in

Bheki Nene is destined for even greater things as he has enormous experience in theatre and has performed in London, Sweden and Madagascar. His album is yet to come but has already secured big gigs in China and Paris; he is bound to succeed as he plans to feature international artists in his albums to give it world class standard.

SAMRO OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS COMPETION A dozen of the country’s most gifted young pianists have booked a date with destiny at the end of August, when they will compete for one of two sought-after R170 000 overseas scholarships offered by the SAMRO Foundation. Over the past half-century the SAMRO Overseas Scholarships Competition, which is one of South Africa’s most lucrative music education awards, has cemented its status as a desirable addition to any emerging musician’s CV. The 2013 competition focuses on pianists and keyboard players, and this week the SAMRO Foundation announced the six semi-finalists in the Western Art Music and Jazz/ Popular Music categories, who will vie for the scholarships. In the Jazz/Popular Music category, the semi-finalists are Lifa Arosi, Bokani Dyer, Sibusiso

Mashiloane, Wandile Molefe, Gabriel Montgomery and Nicholas Williams. The Western Art (classical) Music candidates are Coila-Leah Enderstein, Jan Hugo, Sylvia Jen, Nina Phillips, Megan-Geoffrey Prins and Daniel Strahilevitz. They will all take part in the intermediate round of the competition at the SABC’s M1 Studio in Auckland Park on Thursday, 29 August 2013, where they will be put through their musical paces by a panel of accomplished adjudicators. Two finalists in each genre will then be selected to go through to the final round, to be held at the same venue on Saturday, 31 August 2013. The duel between the two classical and two jazz pianists is always highly charged and superbly entertaining, and serves as a ringing endorsement of the standard of musical talent coming out of the country’s university music programmes. What is particularly gratifying, according to André le Roux, Executive General Manager of the SAMRO Foundation, is that through its various music study awards SAMRO is helping to build a tight-knit artistic family who are influential in the music world.

He explains that one of the semifinalists, Gabriel Montgomery, has previously been the recipient of music study bursaries from SAMRO – and is now trying his luck at reeling in the big fish, the Overseas Scholarship. Two candidates – Bokani Dyer and Sibusiso Mashiloane –entered the competition four years ago and made it to the finals, and have now set their sights on bagging the main prize the second time around. Another example of how SAMRO is continually ploughing back into the South African music family is that two previous scholarship winners are now serving on the judging panel. “It shows SAMRO as a patron is not just supporting one-off events, but reinvesting in growing our cultural wealth and our community of musicians over time, the culmination of which is the scholarships competition, and being involved in their career trajectories thereafter.” For more information, visit www. samrofoundation.org.za, or contact Naseema Yusuf at the SAMRO Foundation on 011 712 8417 or naseema.yusuf@samro.org.za.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE BLIND Music and technology open up a broad new perspective and a variety of new job opportunities for the blind. Emendy Sound & Music Technology College provides a computer-based music production and sound engineering course for the blind. Now you can produce your own music, record, edit, arrange, mix and master with the help of specially developed music software, equipment and study material. This combined music production and sound engineering NQF level 4-diploma course is specially developed for the blind to teach a learner the entire process of producing their own music, from the basic principles of sound, recording, programming and editing, up to the final mixing and mastering process. Students are not limited to a specific music genre and are enabled to produce any style of music Dance, Kwaito, House, R&B, Hiphop, Jazz, Rock, Blues and many more. This course includes both aspects of sound engineering and

music production, including drum and instrument programming, sequencing, production technique and music theory. It also includes aspects such as audio to script conversion, audio restoration, Live DJ’s, converting of LP’s to CD and other music industry related tasks that can be carried out by the blind. According to Emendy Managing Director, Martin Willemse, the college’s main philosophy is to enrich people’s lives through music education. “We always had a passion for the disabled and saw the need and opportunity to develop the course. Our classrooms and facilities also accommodate wheelchairs and we would like to see that everyone gets the same opportunity to start a career in the music industry.” The business side of the course focuses on developing and maintaining independent entrepreneurial business, whether in the music or corporate scene, from finances to marketing, research,

products and services, corporate strategy, goals and business planning. Most of the students’ classes are presented one-on-one. A blind lecturer who has successfully completed the MPB course teaches the music software subject, and it is really amazing to watch two blind people making music on a computer without the need for computer monitor.

KNOW YOUR

MUSIC RIGHTS Performing Rights belong to the person or people who own the music. That’s music composers, lyricists or music publishers who wrote, created or produced it. They earn royalties when the music is either performed in public, or broadcast on mediums such as TV or radio. And even when it’s used in a telephone message service or played in an elevator SAMRO makes sure that playback time is payback time. Mechanical Rights is a fancy name for the royalties that composers, lyrists and music publishers earn when their music is copied and

transformed into mediums such as cassettes, CDs, DVDs, MP3s and ringtones for public use, reproduced by a device or machine.

in public. These are the people who were in the studio playing the instruments, or singing the lyrics when the recording was made.

Music Creators trust SAMRO to manage these rights for them. They license your tracks and collect fees from Music Users including radio stations and advertising agencies, DJ’s and anyone who makes copies, cover versions, compilation CDs or when it’s made available for legal download on the internet. SAMRO makes sure playback time is payback time for Music Creators.

Even if they didn’t write the song or the lyrics, their talent contributed to the final product. So they should get paid any time the song is played on the radio or anywhere else in public for that matter.

Needletime Rights make sure performers and Recording Artists get paid when their music is played

As long as they contributed to a recorded performance that was captured on CD, tape, MP3 or any other recording device, Recording Artists have Needletime Rights over that recording

ARTISTS AND REPERTOIRE

Artists and repertoire (A&R) is the division of a record label that is responsible for talent scouting and overseeing the artistic development of recording artists. It also acts as a liaison between artists and the record label. The A&R division is responsible for discovering new recording artists and bringing them to the record company. They are expected

to understand the current tastes of the market and to be able to find artists that will be commercially successful. A&R people are often young, well-rounded and experienced in music culture, and often they are former musicians, music journalists or record producers. An A&R executive is authorized to offer a record contract, often in the form of a “deal memo: a short

informal document that establishes a business relationship between the recording artist and the record company. The actual contract negotiations will typically be carried out by rival entertainment lawyers hired by the musician’s manager and the record company. A&R executives rely mostly on the word of mouth of trusted associates, critics and business contacts.

ers and producers. As the record nears completion, the A&R department works closely with the artist to determine if the record is acceptable to the record company. This may include suggesting that new songs need to be written or that some tracks need to be re-recorded. A key issue is whether the album has a single: a particular track which can be used to market the record on the radio. Once the record is completed, the A&R department with assistance from marketing, promotion and the artist chooses a single to help promote the record.

They also tend to favor bands that play in the same city that the record company is located. Contrary to popular belief, their decisions are rarely based on unsolicited demo tapes sent by musicians. The A&R division oversees the recording process. This includes helping the artist to find the right record producer, scheduling time in a recording studio and advising the artist on all aspects of making a high quality recording. They work with the artist to choose the best songs (i.e. Repertoire) to record. For artists who do not write their own music, they will assist in finding songs and songwriters. A&R executives maintain contact with their counterparts at music publishing companies to get new songs and material from songwrit-

JAY Z $20 MILLION MUSIC DEAL Samsung has signed the biggest Music Deal of its kind with rapper and businessman Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, the owners of Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II devices can now download rapper Jay-Z’s new album on a first come, first serve basis, delivered through a special Samsung Android app. For a price of $5-million dollars, Samsung bought one million copies of Jay-Z’s new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, part of a broader deal estimated to be worth $20-million over all. Apple Inc. isn’t the only industry player wooing artists into exclusive early access deals. This time it’s Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. forking out millions to make Jay-Z’s new album available to owners of its Galaxy phones and

tablets first, three days before Magna Carta Holy Grail’s official release. On the surface, it’s a smart move. Apple did the same with Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience and Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories – both big budget, big-name albums streamed via iTunes ahead of long awaited releases. Samsung readies new Galaxy S4 that’s twice as fast as its current model; Wi-LAN shares soar on Samsung deal renewal Samsung shares hammered as analysts slash Galaxy S4 sales forecasts. But this isn’t about the music industry. Despite the album’s novel method of distribution, it’s not about the music at all. For Samsung, it’s an attempt to raise the profile of the South

Korean manufacturer’s Galaxy S smartphones and Galaxy Note tablets outside tech-savvy circles and partnering with Jay-Z taps Samsung into an industry that has significant cultural pull. On Somewhere in America, the album’s seventh track, Jay-Z even raps, “a million sold before the album dropped.” (Can we still say “dropped” for an album launched via app?) Never mind the fact that Samsung’s servers were seemingly overwhelmed when the album preview was released at midnight, July 4. If you owned a Samsung device, you technically got early access to something new, hip and highly regarded. Perhaps that makes Samsung devices new, hip and highly regarded by association.

In autumn 2008 Ralf toured in South Africa for the first time with great response and was

released. It gained global critical acclaim and reached gold status in South Africa. The hallmark of Ralf’s sound is his love for live instrumentation coupled with wicked deep house beats. But the distinctive groove isn’t the only reason for Ralf’s success, his passion and love for all things soulful shines through all time and helps create a simply irresistible vibe. The organizations major goal is to identify local potential music artists, groom and promote them to levels of national’s recognition and self-sustainability. Their aim is to create awareness and imparting knowledge on prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, HIV/AIDS and Crime. This is achieved through musical performances in the public place and in high density areas such as quarter camps and townships having an interjection awareness sermon

in helping, housing and raising our vulnerable and abandon children to assist them in raising funds so they can continue doing this wonderful and selfless job of raising our children. Most of these victims are abandoned by their loved ones and the society as a whole. During the festive season the rate of suicides increased due to the fact that these children feel the pain of loneliness. It is the most painful time of the year for these victims since they have no families to spend their time with. It might sound clichĂŠ but it is a well-known fact that there is no place like home. Imvelaphi for the Youth is on a mission to make a better living for those affected by HIV/ AIDS. It is though very hard to accomplish such a mis-

about after the realization or seeing the opportunity that during the festive season there are lot of festivities happening around our communities to celebrate the season, the closing of school, the Christmas and the New Year. None of these festivities are aimed or targeting the most vulnerable people in our communities which is the children and the youth in homes and orphanage’s, none of these festivities are addressing or creating awareness on drugs and alcohol abuse. December being the awareness month of HIV/Aids none of the events that are organized during this time are making an impact or an effort to spread knowledge and engage the community in coming up with ways to mobilize the youth and become

IMVELAPHI FOR THE YOUTH between artists in each and every performance. The organization has embarked on the mission to work tirelessly in empowering and uplifting the community and also have seen the need of love and support amongst those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, and abandon children. Their initiative is to produce sporting and musical events that will empower the youth, encouraging entrepreneurship and job creation through promoting tourism and entertainment in KwaZulu Natal. Imvelaphi for the Youth decided to gather its forces and approach orphanages, places of safety and homes that are going an extra mile

sion without any assistance that is why they have created an musical event that will respond to the opportunity that every living person has been given, the greatest opportunity to love and to be loved. South Africa a country in unity striving to live out its vision of cultures coexisting and embracing one another is seemingly on the right path to reaching a South African utopia. Skomplazi Arts & Music Festival is about enhancing and preserving the distinct richness of culture that is the foundation of South Africa we know today. Skomplazi Arts & Music Festival is an annual event that will be held every 1st week of December, the event came

part of the awareness drive. IMvelaphi for the Youth made it their mission to respond to the needs our vulnerable children and the youth by creating a community based event that will raise, gather and generate resources to support our orphanages and homes within our communities in and around KwaZulu Natal. Skomplazi Arts & Music Festival will combine arts, music and sports to create awareness and to empower our communities youth. Article by: Josephine Mafa
