from the editor Since President Obama has taken over the White House he has worked to broaden opportunity, advance equality, and level the playing field for all people, including LGBT people and its communities. In this issue we celebrate our NORMS, that’s your NORM, which no one has to subscribe to be acknowledged and respect. One of the most important aspects of Obamonation is the family unit and its representation of the Black family. I do believe in family and respect what it represents. The LGBT community is all about family and represents that in their fight to be respected as such, regardless of belief. As an influencer, UrbanSocialites stands Proud with Pride to follow in the progress of change and awareness. The diversity of the American people makess the country an example of expression, not oppression. In our Obama issue we acknowledge president Obama’s second term and his accomplishments. How do you feel he is doing as an African American in the ironic White House? What was once a place we serviced, is now a place which we command. As Father’s Day approaches we recognize Magic Johnson for his unconditional love and support to his son. Parenting doesn’t get better as he stands proud. The National Black Justice Coalition has partnered with UrbanSocialites Magazine to represent a national voice for empowering LGBT. Sharon J. Lettman-Hicks, you ROCK as an ally and Executive Director of NBJC. They could not have a better CEO. On another note we are also advocates of change and testing makes us STRONGER make us responsible for a healthy lifestyle which includes regular STD testing and knowing your status. Life is about living so we intend to promote healthy lifestyles, mentally, physically, financially and building a relationship with a physician. UrbanSocialites is not only a magazine, it’s a lifestyle.

URBAN AMBASSADOR Ervin Magic Johnson is known as the champion and LGBT ally for HIV/AIDS since he made the announcement about his HIV status in 1991 and retiring from NBA Sports. He now adds to his list of title “OUTED.” In a recent interview with TMZ, Magic Johnson took the time to speak for the first time, in an exclusive interview, giving a heartwarming, candid and insightful account of his son’s coming out. Johnson vowed to dedicate his life to educating others about HIV/AIDS, working to remove the disease’s stigma and promote safe sexual habits. “To me, AIDS was someone else’s disease. It was a disease for gays and drug users. Not for someone like me,” Johnson wrote in Sports Illustrated. “My ignorance could have cost me my life, but now I want to try and ensure that no one else would become infected with HIV for the same reason.”

Chef Shimi’s Corner

Long grain rice with greens & spicy barbecue wings Hello and thank you for visiting Chef Shimi’s Corner. I’d like to introduce a tasty and healthy lunch I made for UrbanSocialites’ recent shoot, which cost less than $20.00 and Chef Shimi took an hour to prepare. I spoke with Curtis Davis, Fashion Director for the magazine, and was inspired to make long grain brown rice, mixed green salad and my famous spicy barbecue wings. First I picked up 5 lbs of freshly cut chicken wings, a 2 lb bag of organic long grain brown rice and a mixed green salad with red peppers, white spanish onions, carrots, and beef tomatoes. I filled a large pot halfway with cold water and

placed the chicken wings in it. I added salt and pepper for taste, covered the pot, and set to boil for 30 minutes, or until chicken rises to top. Then, I took a medium-size pot, added rice and 4 cups of cold water, 2 teaspoons of butter, and set to boil for 25 minutes. Uncover when done and let stand to rest. I took the chicken wings out of the pot and drained excess water, mixed spicy hot barbecue sauce, pineapple juice, open-pit and honey sauce, and placed in the alumium

pan into the preheated oven at 400 degrees uncovered for 25 mintues (or until brown). Once slightly crispy, I added a little more sauce for flavor. Remove from oven and let stand. Now, for the salad. Chop and dice onion, red pepper, carrots and tomatoes. Mix together and place on serving dish with a splash of my secret Chef Shimi salad dressing for flavor. And there you have it: a great and tasty, healthy meal under $20 that takes less than an hour. Thank you for checking out Chef Shimi’s Corner. Eat well, chow chow.

s the Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), the nation’s leading civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, it is my privilege introduce you to NBJC. We are so excited and honored to join UrbanSocialites as a content partner and to welcome Urban Socialites readers into the NBJC family. Since 2003, NBJC has provided leadership at the intersection of African American civil rights groups and LGBT organizations, advocating for the unique challenges and needs of the Black LGBT community that are often relegated to the sidelines. Progress on LGBT social and political issues grows as LGBT people feel empowered to be open about their full identity and stake a claim in their future. NBJC strives to build an informed and strategic constituency equipped with the necessary tools to own their power. That is why each year NBJC convenes over 200 LGBT activists, elected officials, faith leaders and youth at our annual OUT on the Hill Black LGBT Leadership Summit in September. and educate Congressional leaders, the Obama Administration and federal agencies on public policy concerns of Black LGBT people and our families. It’s also why we launched our Black LGBT Emerging Leaders Initiative, designed to identify young, rising stars (ages 18-30) in the Black LGBT movement as well as provide a platform and a space for standout leaders to use their voice, build networks, and take action in their communities. Hundreds gather in the nation’s capital for our annual Black LGBT Emerging Leaders Day. They leave feeling ignited and with the tools to affect change on the local level. This is an important year for our community and our nation as a whole. We’ve picked up tremendous momentum during President Obama’s first full term in office. Support for LGBT people is at an all-time high. We are at a tipping point. It is critical that, as Black LGBT people, we continue to own our collective power and bridge the gaps between the racial justice and LGBT equality movements. POWERCOUPLE PASTOR MIKE W. HEARD ON RELATIONSHIPS, GOD & THE GOOD LIFE AWARDS

12

URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

We are responsible for making it work.

Tell me about the correlation between Religion, Money and Marriage. For us Religion, Money & Marriage affects our relationship in many ways.We are blessed because we pretty much have the same views on each matter. However, Religion at one time was a point of friction for us. Although we are both “Christian” we have very different ideas of what that looks like. So, to resolve that issue we agreed to accept each other for who we are and where we are. This conflict almost broke us up. If a couple does not share the same views or agree to accept the other individual for who they are, the relationship will NOT make it.

What were some of the biggest challenges in merging your financial lives? When we first got together we were both struggling financially. There were so many challenges because of a lack of money. I was busy trying to get my ministry off the ground and Aaron was trying to get his website/graphic firm established. We had nothing. But, we made it and are in a much better place now.

How has religion made your relationship a success even if it has its conflict? Although we consider ourselves more Spiritual than Religious, Religion has made our relationship successful. We know that when times get hard, we go to God in prayer. I mean, we pray when things are also good, but when our back is against the wall and we are about to break, Prayer is our key to getting through anything.

Do you believe that relationship counseling is essential prior to a partnership commitment? YES! Times1,000,000!

What would you like God to say about your relationship? These two young men have trusted me.Through the good and bad.Through being Broke and Having Money.Through Sickness and Great Health.Through Heartbreak and Great Romance.Through Bitter and the Sweet. They trusted me and now they can have the life and peace that I promised them. What is the most important attribute your partner brings to the relationship? Aaron is the glue that has held us together when I was ready to walk away. He has a strong sense of loyalty and commitment to anything that he is a part of. He fights hard to keep this relationship together and moving forward. Aaron: Michael has a real heart for God and God’s people. I have learned so much about my relationship with God through him. Michael is a great leader and a man that is submitted to God and I trust him with my life and our family.

How do you incorporate your individual goals with a working relationship? We make sure that our individual goals are goals that are in the best interest of our relationship.

How did the Good Life Awards come to life in celebration of recognizing the community? The Good Life Awards started out as the Victorious Woman Awards, where we honored Woman who serve in the Church. We honored First Ladies and Female Pastors. However, once I came out, I discovered that the people who used to embrace me (the traditional church), no longer embraced me. So, I felt led by God to begin honoring individuals outside of the church and, thus far, God has blessed us to be successful. How do you maintain a strong relationship after irreconcible differences? Prayer, Communication and Counseling, and Prayer again. How can your relationship influence others that a committed relationship works? We have no special plan of action because life is unpredictable. But what we do know is that if you keep God first, love without condition, ALWAYS BE HONEST and give your partner just as much grace as you desire to receive, you will make it! ARE YOU A TOP OR A BOTTOM? Words by Kyle Marchand If you’ve ever been around a group of gay men, or you yourself are a gay or bi-sexual man then you’ve probably heard, read or uttered the phrase “top or bottom.” Over the past several decades gay sex and the language pertaining to it has become much more than what its language pertains to. The language of gay sex has in itself become the fabric of identity for many gay men. Sex for many gay men is not just sex; it’s a way of life. Today, the language within gay sex is very much a part of the social norm. As the LGBT community has been able to rise up against oppressive views and political stereotypes, they still seem to lump the population into identifying groups.

not get off into the variables within these words because that’s another article all together. Given the information you just read, how would you describe a top and bottom? If you think those words mean one man plays the role of the “man” and the other the “woman” in the relationship, you are absolutely wrong. Gay men are just men and you’d be surprised by the type of men who identify themselves as tops and bottoms.

A large percentage of men that society may consider to be effeminate in fact identify themselves as a top. However, that notion can be contradictory with the application of the same stereotype for those guys who identify as a bottom. Many men who walk, talk and act like Need a little education on what a top or bottom the biggest bad-asses in the street are in fact is? Basically the “top” is the man penetrating the “super nelly” bottoms in the sack. booty and the “bottom” is the man receiving the beautiful penis. Then there is “Versatile” which Does that mean that one is more of a man than quite obviously means he loves to do both. Let’s the other? No, it does not mean that at all. So

14

URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

This is my norm.... and I am celebrating ME. the stereotype of being called a top or bottom is more often than not a very sensitive subject for some men. Given its original meaning and because of the context in which bottom is used to describe gay sex, some men feel like claiming that title emasculates the man himself. To the contrary, it is a known fact that bottoms tend to be tougher than their masculine counterparts. Just for the simple fact bottoms sometimes go through hell just having sex. They are at the highest risk for contracting STDs and not to mention they have to put in a lot more work than the top in order to have good sex. Bottoms are tough ass men! No pun intended. I recently went on a date with a very sweet handsome man. He stated to me on our drive through the Malibu Hills, that in the gay community of Los Angeles, the words top and bottom are used in conversation far more than in any other city in America. He also told to me that in earlier years, conversations gay men had with one another had far less to do with the fact that they were a top or a bottom.

Today it seems that many gay men wear their label of “top” and “bottom” as a badge of honor. But in this society where nothing is actually what it seems, bottoms and tops can be described as anything but those two categories. Let’s be honest, in most instances for sexually active gay men, when that inevitable top or bottom question is asked, it’s generally with the intent of having an immediate hook up for “right now.” Although, recently I discovered that some men ask this question casually, in conversation, in public, on a walk and when no immediate intent to have sex is present. But, if asked in the right moment, the answer to this question may open the door to conversation and more. Or, with a little bad judgment and poor timing, that same question can completely turn someone off and end the conversation completely.

I asked him, “Do you think gay men in Los Angeles can really be identified by these two little words?” His response, “I absolutely believe so!” I asked him if he thought that was a bad thing. He said, “not all the time, but it can be.” And I agree with him. Many gay men will ask you if you are a top or a bottom before even asking your name. That question is used to facilitate the quickened process of cut to the chase and let’s do the “hook up” right now.

Many men who walk, talk & act like the biggest bad-asses in the street are in fact “super nelly” bottoms in the sack. URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

POLITICS Our journey is not complete.

ANOTHER 4 YEARS OF

OBAMA Words by Rameses Frederick Each year President Obama has released his proclamation outlining all that has been done for the LGBT community by the administration during the prior year, as well as what is planned in the coming months. President Obama states, “I am confident because I have seen the talent, passion, and commitment of LGBT advocates and their allies, and I know that when voices are joined in common purpose, they cannot be stopped.” A profound statement that a lot of progress has been made, but the Obama administration and its allies have not finished their work. Since taking office, the President has demonstrated that his vision for the future of the American people also includes greater equality for LGBT Americans. The President and his Administration are dedicated to eliminating barriers to equality, fighting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and engaging LGBT communities across the country. The President’s efforts have included major legislative achievements such as the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” as well as significant administrative actions in support of equality.

It is no secret that the we are not exactly satisfied with how government is conducting its administration. There is only one way to make change in this country. Each of us must take personal responsibility to change the life around us. We don’t need a stalled Congress to tell us what to do. We don’t need to sit around and wait for someone to fix our lives for us.We have the power to change our lives instantly through our choices, our words and our actions. That’s how we create change! How can we fix the budget? How can we improve education? How can we care for the planet? How can we end obesity? We begin with yourself and those in our circle of influence. We get ourselves out of debt and stay solvent. We begin to live more simply, with more awareness and gratitude. We go online, learn something new, and teach our children to do the same. We insist on pesticide-free and preservative-free food. We limit our consumption, actively conserve energy and recycle what we use. We educate ourselves about health and nutrition, and provide it for those around us. Then we find a few friends to join with us to educate others in what we have found. We can change the world, one person at a time, one thought at time.

If we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal.

Passed the stimulus: Signed $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009 to spur economic growth. Passed Credit Card Reforms: prohibited credit card companies from raising rates without advance notification, mandates a grace period on interest rate increases, and strictly limits overdraft and other fees. The HIV conversation Your friend just told you they have HIV. Here are a few suggestions on how to respond:

Avoid Say “How long have you had it?” “You’re not alone.” “How did you get it?” “Have you started treatment yet?” “Who gave it to you?”

“I’m here for you”’

“Why am I not surprised?” “Have you found a good doctor?” “I’m not gonna get it, am I ?” “I appreciate you telling me that.” Asking questions about HIV is important for learing and understanding it. But remember, theres’s a time and place, and right now your family member or friend needs you to be strong & supportive, not offensive.

SHOES TO KICK OFF YOUR SUMMER

Looking for that great collaboration or collective nod of approval brought about from the next wave of suits, bags and, of course, shoes? Words by David White I’d have to say that the number one menswear item not lingering on the shelves or in boxes nowadays are the shoes. It’s details like footwear that male admirers and fellow male counterparts look to first with nods of approval (or looks of skepticism). For Summer 2013, I’ve narrowed down the slip-on and lace-up little cherries on top that linger around men’s ankles into the three categories I feel are electric for the season. HIGH TOPS: High fashion and mainstream designers have caused many trendy men to have a love affair with the ankleshielding calf-grazing styles that blur the lines of casual, athletic and luxury. On fire right now is Giuseppe Zanotti who plays with all three in the name luxury with his double-zip sneakers that are clearly high top but more for flaunting at an event than flossing on the black top. Whether the end result is a shoe that calls to mind the machismo of an Air Force One or the modern Goth of the Rick Owens aesthetic, high tops are similar to the innuendos of high heels in their suggestive gender referencing.

TRAINERS: New to menswear? Hardly! Reenergized in menswear? Definitely! The trainer style is seeing resurgences in men’s fashion thanks to technologies from staples such as Nike and their Flyknit line and a revamping in colors and materials from companies like New Balance, Asics and Saucony. For Spring/Summer 2013 designers like Ferragamo, Raf Simons and Valentino have offered high fashion luxury models for those seeking to have the look of a runner with the goal of oysters & fries over the finish line. LOAFERS: Color is another way to infuse modernity into men’s fashion. For example, a refreshed looking update for the season has been the colors added to men’s classic penny loafers. The verdant green and sun-kissed gold from makers like Walk-Over Shoes on natural wood soles are lively updates for the conscious modern male from the black and cordovan loafers of yesteryear. SEX & RELATIONSHIPS Find things about yourself you can say something good about every time you look in the mirror.

SPARK the flame Words by Mz Scorpion What makes you hot about your partner? Is it the way he smiles? Is it the way he kisses? The way he talks, or how about the way he puts it down on you? Either way, you love it and want to keep it going; so let’s keep it going. It is your turn to please your partner. What are you going to do? Let’s see — he is on his way home from work. So take a shower and put on nothing but lotion. Turn off all the lights and hide behind the front door. Don’t make a sound. Remain in stealth mood as you listen for the keys in the lock. When he enters, grab them quickly and push him against the wall. “Freeze, MoFo. Don’t move.” Whatever he may have in his hands, take it and put it to the side. Start kissing him on the neck very gently while caressing his manhood. (Make sure you let him know to keep his hands up at all times.) He is not allowed to touch you yet. Slowly start to remove his shirt and pants. Can you feel the heat rising? Now slowly allow your kisses to make their way down his chest (make sure to plant soft moist lips to every inch) until you reach his saluting solider. Now take your hand and grip him

firmly while parting your lips letting your tongue escape to steal some tasty licks around the head then down the shaft. Remember, you must keep him pinned to the wall. After a few pleasure dances with your mouth, stop to guide him to the kitchen. Lay him across the table and begin a body search with your hands. Fondle his balls and stroke his stick until he begs you to stop. Put your mouth around the head and suck hard and quick making a popping sound. Each time you pop, a spark flickers. Stop. Can you feel the fire blazing? Now, let’s take it to the living room. Lay him on the floor and stand over him, teasing yourself. Let him watch you as your body whines to be stroked. You see he is ready and so are you. Dance your way down to his microphone and let the two sing in harmony.Your juices are flowing like the Nile River as you keep dancing. He is ready to explode, as he grabs you tightly you throw your head back with receiving pleasure. He hits the bass and both of you reach that high note. The melody is beautiful. After the session, allow yourselves to just lay holding each other. Then, gently whisper in his ear, “how was your day?”

the question you all want to know... What makes Love Work? And they were nice enough to share some of their secrets to a successful relationship. So take notes those of you looking to get and keep a man. This is good stuff. The short answer is this: We made a commitment and we want it to work! Every human being on this earth is different and every relationship is equally different. What works for us may not work for you and vice versa and that’s OK. There is no magic formula for making a relationship

All love is equal successful, but there is one thing that we feel to be a universal ideal for those who are in it for the long haul and that is Transparency. The major way that we make LoveWork is by effectively communicating, or in other words, by being transparent to one another. This is the most challenging yet most rewarding behavior within our relationship. The effort it takes to be completely honest with one another about what’s going on in your head and heart can be immensely intimidating. To continuously face your demons head on; to own your actions in any given situation, independent of your partner’s faults; To reside in a state of constant emotional exposure can leave you feeling powerless. We know because we’ve been there. The key is to realize that the feeling of powerlessness is nothing but fear. If we allow the fear of hurt or confrontation to dictate our reality then we will continue to live in lies and deception in turn stunting our growth as a person and our progress as a unit. This is our struggle. This is where our work begins. We continuously have to work to maintain transparency, because we often find ourselves trying to protect one another or ourselves from the unspoken. We create scenarios in our head complete with dialogue, arguments, resolutions, etc. before it even happens. You haven’t said one word to your partner but fear told you that they wouldn’t like whatever it is that’s on your mind so you bottle it up. You bury it, at least for now. Come on, you know you do it. The first thing to understand when you find yourself going to that place is this: vulnerability is not a bad word, it simply means you’re being accessible. Imagine being able to share yourself completely with another person and still be loved by them. That’s unconditional love. Iyanla Vanzant put it best when she said, “You must be readily available for your partner in all ways; spiritually, mentally and physically.” Amen Iyanla. Once you are able to embody this mantra nothing and no one can divert you from making LoveWork. Remember, it takes work to make LoveWork.

We continuously have to work to maintain transparency, because we often find ourselves trying to protect one another or ourselves from the unspoken.

MUSIC Music consumes my soul.

RHYTHM‘N’BLUES‘N’SOUL Interview by Joshua Hodges UrbanSocialites: Have you always enjoyed the art of music? Devin Tracy: Yes, always on my mind, when I wake up & before I go to bed. I love how it can affect the way a person feels at that moment, the way a beat or the beginning/bridge of a song can get you in your feelings. I’ve always loved music. If I could marry her I would. US: Are there any loves, other than music? DT: No, not right now. I kind of don’t have time. I’m afraid I’m going to lose focus — I know I am — when it comes to me being in a relationship. But they say I have to make time. US: Do you have any celeb crushes? DT: Yes, Lianne La Havas, Kelis, Amerie, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jhene Aiko. US: If you could have any style what would it be? DT: Hipster, but to be honest I don’t really look for a particular style. The way I dress depends on how I feel. US: If you had the chance to perform alongside another artist, who would it be and why? DT: Lianne La Havas, because she is amazing in person and she smart, beautiful, and she looks like she has lots of fun live on stage. US: What was the best advice ever given to you in regard to your music career? Who gave you the advice? DT: Marsha Ambrosius. To build, build, build. Stay focused and worry about you first, get yourself in the door first. US: What was the first song you ever performed? DT: Singing “Happy Birthday” to a friend when I was 8 years old.

US: What are your secret cravings? DT: For some strange reason I’m always craving tropical fruits. I can eat pineapples all day or honey crisp apples with caramel dipping sauce, strawberries, sour grapes, and pomergranate. US: How has your sexuality affected your journey through the music industry? DT: I’ve never really been asked this before, but It hasn’t done anything bad, but bring good and comfortable vibes. US: What has been your hardest challenge? DT: Being able to let go on stage. People would tell me, “Your voice is amazing, but you’re holding back.” I didn’t know what that meant until recently when I was performing a song on stage, the lyrics to the song matched everything that I was going through in life and I managed to tell the story. US: What kind of music do you listen to? DT: I listen to soul, hip-hop, electronic, experimental, house, jazz. US: What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player? DT: I wouldn’t consider them embarassing, but there’s a lot of soulful house music. US: Where would you most like to perform? DT: At Webster Hall, The Village Underground in London, Itunes Festival, October Fest, and Madison Square Garden. US: If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing? DT: I have no idea. That’s kind of scary. US: What hidden talents do you have? DT: I can draw, I write poetry, and I’m great at making breakfast. URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

Never fear change.

Withholding forgiveness leaves us with a large hole. No one can move forward in their lives while being held down by the chains of resentment.

The Free Dictionary defines integrity as “steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code,” or “the state of being unimpaired; soundness.” Integrity is an essential element of our spiritual growth. While integrity serves as a means for aspiring to our personal best, it also allows us to ascend the metaphorical ladder of spiritual evolution. Integrity is a measure of our progress in our spiritual development. Integrity aids us in our quest for spiritual perfection.

they are. Acceptance doesn’t mean tolerating a bad situation. It means acknowledging the absolute right of an entity to remain in its existing state without interference from outside forces. That’s a bit of a mouthful, but the idea is that we do not attempt to change the object or situation. We can and should improve on it however. That is where integrity comes in. We are not trying to change the person with whom we are directing our bitterness. We want to improve the situation. This process can only start with us.

Without integrity, we are demoralized and incapable of making ethical decisions. This fact hinders our reincarnation cycle to the point that we are stuck in a holding pattern. We know many people are stuck in less than desirable circumstances. They continue to make bad choices. There are many poor decisions that can be reworded to read “lack of sound judgment.” One of these errors in judgment being unwillingness to forgive. Withholding forgiveness leaves us with a large hole. No one can move forward in their lives while being held down by the chains of resentment. Bitterness is the sworn enemy of spiritual evolution. Although there are all sorts of events we could perceive as personal failings, resentment is the one that can endure even beyond this life. Fortunately, resentment and bitterness are easy to lose if we would just accept the things that disturb us.

You cannot make a bad situation better by trying to manipulate the variables. The sand always slides through your fingers when you try to force change on a situation. Rather than attempting to control the uncontrollable, we must accept the situation before us. If it is a person who has wronged us, and who we feel has gotten away with “murder,” we should accept this person’s personality. You must say to yourself “This is the way this person operates, and I cannot change him.”

At first integrity and acceptance would seem to contradict each other. After all, if the definition I give to integrity means to pursue one’s highest ideals, then how could one accept things the way

Next, you must resolve to improve your relationship with this person, or at least your attitude toward them. If you truly desire to make it work, then it will happen. After acknowledging and accepting a situation, my favorite axiom is “What can I do about it?” You might start by seeing the good qualities in that person, even if it is hard. Try to see through them and into their inner being. At some point , you may want to offer a helping hand to that person. A kind word or gesture can go a long way. It’s not as hard as it sounds. Just change the way you deal with that person. It will all come together. URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

FITNESS It’s easier to stay in shape if you never let yourself get out of shape in the first place.

WARNING SIGNS OF

EXERCISE ADDICTON Words by Hollyann E. Jenkins and M.Williams

So how do you know whether you are engaged in a healthy lifestyle, or whether you have a problem? Health experts recommend 5 to 10 hours of exercise a week. But when the need for exercise becomes obsessive, doctors say that could qualify as exercise addiction, a behavior that can be both physically and emotionally damaging. Think about how you would feel if you were unable to exercise for a day, a week, or indefinitely.Would it bother you? Would it be a nice rest? Most importantly, would you find it hard to cope with life without daily exercise? People with exercise addiction may have various motivations for their behavior, including a desire to control their body weight or shape, a feeling of inexplicable dread if exercise is not performed, or to achieve an exercise-induced “high.” If you are exercising frequently, but are not concerned about how it would feel if you couldn’t exercise, you are probably not addicted, although it may be worth discussing how much exercise is healthy for you with your doctor or someone with expertise in exercise, such as a personal trainer or gym instructor. The amount and type of exercise that is healthy will depend on factors including your age, health, sex and physical condition.

7 Warning Signs of Exercise Addiction 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Always following the same exercise pattern. Always working out alone, isolated from others. Exercising for more than two hours daily, repeatedly. Fixation on weight loss or calories burned. Exercising when sick or injured. Exercising to the point of pain and beyond. Skipping work, class, or social plans for workouts.

Exercise addiction is not recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as a primary disorder. Excessive exercise is known to be a symptom of bulimia nervosa. The Diagnostic Manual defines excessive exercise as exercise that “significantly interferes with important activities, occurs at inappropriate times or in inappropriate settings, or when the person continues to exercise despite injury or medical complications.” In this case, people with bulimia will exercise excessively as a way to control their body weight or to compensate for binge eating, as opposed to or in addition to purging. People with anorexia nervosa may also engage in excessive exercise in order to achieve weight loss.

6 WAYS TO

BOOST BODY IMAGE WITHOUT LOSING A POUND

Words by Denise Martz, PhD, professor of psychology, Appalachian State University While losing weight may give a temporary boost to your self-esteem, linking self-worth to a dress size is never going to have a long-lasting effect, experts say. What can make a difference is changing the way you see what’s already there in the mirror.

1

Stop negative selftalk immediately. While you still may not like what you see in the mirror, Martz says, learning to describe yourself with neutral, objective phrases can help stop the cycle of poor self-esteem. So, instead of saying to yourself “I have really ugly thighs,” think “My thighs could use some work.”

2

Find and focus on the things you like about your looks. It’s best not to link your looks to your self-esteem, but with body image so intimately entwined with self-image, that can be hard to do.The next best thing is to find something about your image you really like. “It can be great hair, great nails, terrific teeth. Find the things about yourself you can say something good about,

and every time you look in the mirror, go there first and say something positive to yourself,” says Martz.

3

Treat yourself with the same kindness and respect you show your best friend. “Would you respect and care about a person who says about you what you are saying about yourself? If the answer is no, then begin treating yourself at least as well as you are treating others in your life.

4

Say what you mean. Sometimes, hating your thighs is all about wanting thinner thighs. But sometimes, Kaufman says, negative body thoughts are a way of expressing discontent over other issues in your life. Learn to decode these messages.

5

Dress the part. If you’re putting off buying new clothes until you like your body better - don’t. Whether you’re bursting at the seams in duds that are too tight or swimming in oversized clothing to hide your body, you are eroding your self-esteem. “Buy what fits you, and look the very best you can. It sends a powerful message to yourself that you are worth it.

6

Recognize that people naturally come in different shapes and sizes, and cherish your body’s uniqueness. Martz says, remember this: “Only 2% of the world’s women fall into the supermodel category. That leaves a lot of room for the rest of us!” URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

THE

ART OF

PACKING

Words by Jillian Scheeler With the weather in the UK seemingly determined not to improve which makes me sure there are plenty of Brits out there who have decided to pack your things and get away for a week or even longer. However, within that sentence lies a problem – packing your things for this endeavour. Some of you may be better at packing than others, and there are a select few view themselves as a master this precieved art however, even with this talent don’t exclude headaches during the process. As always, FashionBeans is here to give you a few tips and techniques to ease your pain – like a beautiful sartorial injection of endorphins. First, let me clarify: This isn’t an article for the over-enthusiastic. For those of you out there who love to over-pack, over-think and be overcharged for extra baggage (God damn you Easyjet) stop reading now. This one is for the people who are carry-on exclusives and looking for minimum fuss and sweating when boarding and leaving for their chosen destination. Let’s face it, if you are going to take a big old suitcase and struggle with it all the way to the plane, then just follow your same routine and

pack everything. However those of us who aim for versatility, simplicity and class should continue reading and head our advice. KEY CONSIDERATIONS That really is what packing for a getaway comes down to – selecting versatile, simple and classic pieces that will see you through any situation, be it sunbathing or shots at the bar. This way you’ll know that regardless of what you pull out of your bag, it will go with everything else and still look great on you. So when packing, try to stick to pieces that are in easy colours – such as navy, grey and white for monochromes and blues, greens and pinks for brighter colours – because they are all simple to mix and match. Sure, you can pack a statement piece or two (maximum) just try to not go crazy. The next thing to bear in mind is the weather. I always pack the evening before I leave and the first thing I do is confirm the forecast for the rest of the week so I know what to expect. If it’s nonstop heat then you’re going to want to pack shorts, t-shirts, a few pieces in linen or madras and some simple canvas or light leather shoes. Meanwhile,

less than ideal whether may call for you to pack a few more trouser and shirt options, with some layers in the mix too. Preparation is key here! Once you have what you’re taking set out in front of you, start being ruthless! In the heat of the moment those bright yellow chinos seemed like a must, but with a level head they could be the different between closing your bag and not. Besides, do you really need them? Holidays are about relaxing, having fun, destressing which means fashion forward thinking as a priority is thrumped by simplicity. At the height of syphostication, you’ll often find simplicity.

HOW TO PACK Next comes the hardest part: Packing. Start by removing the items you plan to wear on the plane. This is usually where the first mistake occurs. It happens once you are done packing but wrongly proceed to pick more clothes to wear. Remember that eventually you will need to pack for the return of the trip. Instead, choose the pieces you want to get less wrinkled/beat up and wear those instead. I will typically take a lightweight linen or cotton blazer with me and wear that along with a white short sleeved Oxford shirt. For the lower half, I wear khaki

chinos and black loafers (easy to slip on and off, plus the perfect nighttime shoe). The next mistake: The way we pack. Rather than folding your stuff, why not try the rolling technique? There are loads of videos on YouTube showing you how, and it is the perfect way to maximise the space available to you in your carry on bag. Just simply fold your item in half length ways, tuck in any excess and then roll from the bottom up tightly. Place inside bag and repeat until done. You’ll be surprised at how little they crease this way and, for larger items such as blazers or knits, just hang them up when you shower to steam out the wrinkles.

MIX[

Interior design ideas straight from the pros

IT’S ALL IN THE

Words by Nicholas Mayberry and Dexter Taylor

One of our favorite things to do in regards to design is to mix styles. People often times get very intimidated when it comes to trying to pair furniture from different periods. Well we will help you figure it out and show you exactly how mixing and matching works. There are three key rules you must follow to perfectly pull off “The Mix”.

58

URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

BALANCE, SCALE AND SIMPLICITY When talking about balance, we are referring to having a harmonious flow of movement in the space. You never want your home to look like a yard sale of miscellaneous furniture items. So when selecting items for the mix, make sure

you stay within two to three different styles. Anymore, will just make your life a living you know what and cause visual confusion. The eye feels more comfortable when it can rest upon things that look familiar. So the goal with mixing is to convince the eye that what it is seeing is correct. Balance will help the eye with the digestion of different styles you incorporate into your space. SIZE AND SHAPE As we move into scale, our focus shifts to how furniture relates in terms of size and shape. When different furniture has similar lines and are close in size, they work better for “The Mix”. Trying to mix a big and chunky farm table might not work well when paired with a slim Regency style sideboard, but would work well with a weather worn vintage set of metal lockers. This pairing

works because the shapes and sizes are very similar, although the styles are very different. Working within similarities is key when it comes to generating the proper scale. BALANCE Simplicity becomes important when you want to add a item to “The Mix.” for the purpose of being paired with a more ornate piece. Again, you want your space to be harmonious and void of confusion, so too many ornate items will be a distraction. Try mixing Louis IV chairs with a a sleek Parsons table. The pairing of ornate and simple works well because it gives the eye a chance to rest. Mixing also allows certain elements of a particular piece to shine and places importance in a more intentional way. Creating a balanced mix can sometimes be hard to

accomplish, but if you follow the simple rules of balance, scale and simplicity, we know you will be successful. Your home should be all about you and the things like. Find a way to incorporate all things that are important to you in “The Mix”. We always say. “if you love enough you will find a way to make it work.” So be bold, experiment and put it in “The Mix.”

Words by Persona Ng It is known that most of the bisexual and straight men have an eye after transgender people, but why is it so? I`ve been thinking about this question for the past couple of days and I`ve searched over the Internet for the most appropriate answers in order to solve the “mystery.” I`ve found some strong reasons why some men prefer transgenders over biological women, and I am not talking strictly about intercourse. I`m also talking about relationships and emotional connection. One very strong reason is that since transgender women may have some typically male physical traits such as big shoulders and prominent jawline, they have to hide them somehow. So they never leave the house without makeup and you will never see a respectable transgender wearing clothing that doesn`t suit her. Instead of masking the typically

60

URBANSOCIALITES MAGAZINE www.urbansocialites.com

male features, it highlights them. Men love women that take care of themselves: wear make up, perfume and are always trendy and classy regardless of the situation. I`m not saying that biological women can`t be trendy and classy, I`m just saying that biological women can sometimes appear natural, without make up or fancy clothes, while most of the transgender women wouldn’t ! Another reason would be that transgender people are said to understand a man better. It`s simple, since transgender women used to be men it is easier for them to understand what a straight or bisexual man thinks and wants from his life partner. This is what men are always looking for in a woman: understanding and tolerance, but sometimes it`s pretty difficult to understand men ( uh... you know what I mean, don`t you? Hehe.)

I’m comfortable in my own skin.

In addition to what I`ve said earlier, you probably know that men love beautiful women. Although some of them may say that they don`t look for beauty but for brains, trust me: they do want beautiful women next to them! So, some of the physical features that men love the most are

legs, posterior and breasts. Well, transgender women have them all! Tall, beautiful, with nice legs and bums, transgender women are a delight for most men! If you ask me, this would be the most important reasons why some men love transgender

women. It is obvious that not all men prefer a transgender woman instead of a biological one. Moreover, at a certain moment of their lives, they`ll want to have a family and a couple of children, something that’s not possible so far with a transgender woman, unfortunately.
