For two years our families, businesses, communities and our world have dealt with the most significant public health crisis in a century. While Covid-19 did not exist before 2019 even the youngest among us is all too familiar with the coronavirus, and its impact continues to influence our lives. 4

While our past may have been defined by common interests like sports, schools, a faith based community, music, or our jobs and careers recent history reminds us we all experience the same trials – and triumphs – together. Whatever change we’ve experienced and whatever the future holds we are all in this together.

While times have been tough and many have endured great loss and sorrow, there have been times of resilience positioning us for positive and lasting change. It’s been remarkable watching our communities reassess what was – and is – happening around them. We’ve added new words to daily conversations, like Zoom, and we’ve used virtual platforms to gather socially, conduct business, seek medical care, learn and celebrate. We’re reinventing what work looks like, and how it feels in different settings. Some of us have carved out home office spaces – using them routinely rather than grabbing a few weekend hours to “touch things up, or get ahead of Monday’s workload.” For others home offices have become a catalyst driving employment choices, maybe for the very first time. For others, remote work has created more life/work/family balance – and provided a sense of ownership they may not have experienced before. We’re reimagining what the future can bring, in how we interact, how we live, work and play. We’ve learned how to reach out in new ways, and we’re discovering new ways to help others. On a deeper level, I’ve seen many in our communities continue to look out for each other and redefine what keeping in touch looks like.

Exciting changes in business and manufacturing are evolving. Some are ready to test the waters with terms like nearshoring and reshoring, or bringing how we source goods and some services closer to home. Supply chain, raw materials and labor shortages driven by the pandemic are stark reminders of the cost of having trading partners located oceans away for daily staples. UBCC also reimagined its efforts to serve the business community. Collaboration was the key when joining task forces with local community organizations and the County of Bucks. UBCC offered free Zoom meetings with legal advice, infectious disease experts, human resources pros and state unemployment compensation officials. And SCORE offered business webinars and virtual business counseling to help small businesses keep moving forward. We’ve witnessed competition businesses become collaboration businesses in our hometowns. Businesses were corralling all their collective resources and communicating in new ways. From restaurant and bakery partnerships to retail businesses offering space for artists to display their craft. Whether navigating the pandemic or helping with storm aftermath, like Hurricane Ida in 2021, our communities stepped up, and they leaned in. They responded to changing dynamics, like pivoting from non-essential to essential designations in a variety of sectors, like home building materials and food and grocery store locations. Our hospital systems and health care providers continue to provide reliable, crucial care as well as an information lifeline to our businesses, communities and families. Time and again, our businesses responded by feeding hungry health care providers.

Resilience, Reinvention, & Reimagination Change is never easy. The past two years of world-wide pandemic have meant changes large and small for every one of us. Through it all – and among the many things we’ve discovered – is that our communities are strong and enduring.

There is power in our great outdoors. We’re not alone in rediscovering local trails and park sites. Record numbers of locals and out-oftowners flocked to our parks since early 2020 to enjoy our natural and beauty assets – those waterways, forests, woods, and groves we’re blessed to have located in our own backyards. In fact, visits were up a whopping 26.6% during 2020 over the previous year. When we tune into resilience we see how habits, families, communities, and economies can adapt. Resilience allows us to weather the storm, and whether or not we come to the other side better off, we can come away renewed. If we’re lucky, we’ve learned a thing or two.

Our schools found ways to offer musicals in outdoor venues and continue to support the music and art education of our next generations. En plein air painting continued to draw scores of artists to the landscapes revered by generations before then, continuing a legacy of shared communal arts. Farmers markets were once again strong performers, creating community and financial support for local growers and makers. Meeting the farmer, distiller, wine maker, butcher or baker gives patrons a chance to get closer to the source, creating a nourishing sustainable local cycle. And there’s no doubting the tonic a clear, crisp blue sky can offer on any Saturday morning. Hands down, our restaurant, bar and pub owners were among the hardest-hit economic sectors during the pandemic. THE 2022 SPRING EQUINOX was at 11:32 am on Sunday, March 20. Snowdrops are the earliest spring bulbs. You’ll see their gently drooping pendants peeking out from a light carpet of melting snow. Crocus, daffodils, and tulips, along with Iris reticulate, bloom in succession against an ever-green backdrop of foliage, grasses and fields.

In spring and like all seasons of change, everything feels fresh and new. Do you smell it? Skunk cabbage leaves are among the first growth you’ll notice in low lying wet and marshy areas as spring comes to the region. Can you hear it? The return of birdsong is a welcome shift away from winter’s hush and silence. Do you see it? Pristine snowdrops, buttery yellow daffodils, early red species tulips and tiny grape hyacinth are familiar, welcome reminders of spring’s resilience and renewal. These harbingers offer dependable cues of our resilient landscape reminding us there is power and might in the great outdoors. From the warmth of summer sunshine to the rustle of November leaves we’ve born witness to winter’s ice palace sheen and if we were lucky, we got to play with youngsters, puppies or even older dogs in lightly falling snow. You’ll find plenty of active recreation across the region and throughout the year. Take a walk. Paddle a boat, kayak or canoe. Grab your bike and head for one of the many rail trails offering connected links between Upper Bucks communities. Take a hike at Lake Nockamixon and discover the Stover Mill stone by the waterfall. Learn about this Bucks County family of millers and their contribution to Bucks County’s growth and abundance. Enjoy Peace Valley Park and the view from a lavender hillside at Peace Valley Lavender Farm. Flowers and fragrance are in peak during late June and July. If you close your eyes, you could be in the south of France. Check out disc golf, tennis or pickleball at many municipal parks, or seek solitary sojourns for a gentle walk and wonder into the woods. Resilience is all around us – our families, our friendships, our work, and our communities. In order to thrive during the coronavirus pandemic’s upheaval, we’ve had to adapt. Resilient Recreation

Reinvented Arts & Entertainment Arts festivals are nothing new to Bucks County – in fact artists continue to thrive here as they did more than a century ago when the New Hope School of American Impressionists crafted an artist’s colony. In fact, art is made for outdoor creation and enjoyment. En plein air (French for out of doors) painting method, attributed to Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes in the early 1800s, is a popular Bucks County fair weather pastime. With its focus on color, light and the timeof-day artists can explore natural surroundings in new ways. Upper Bucks Artist Jim Lukens tested the waters in 2021 with an en plein air artist outing, and he plans to hold another outdoor event in 2022. Keep an eye out for details. Look for solo acts in and around our bars and restaurants. Musicians perform at the seasonal Perkasie Farmers Market while patrons shop local. Ensemble groups like Gypsy Stage Company, an acting ensemble in Quakertown, offer fresh inventive takes on stories performed live in Quakertown. Indoor venues also sepped up, providing safe ways to enjoy entertainment, including live in person and Livestream events. Perkasie’s Summer Concert series at Menlo Park offers visitors a chance to enjoy and support local and up and coming musicians in an outdoor

setting. The Univest Performance Center at The Park at 4th in Quakertown attracts national headliners at its Sounds of Summer concert series. For the first time in 2021, Quakertown Community High School performed its musical Into the Woods outdoors, allowing students to showcase their talents in an open air outdoor setting. The annual 71st Tinicum Arts Festival is in the planning stages for July, 2022, after a two-year pandemic-related hiatus. Check its website for updated information about the festival at www.tinicumcivicassociation.org. Spring, summer, and fall prime the shopping canvas with Arts Alive! Fine Arts & Craft and Autumn Alive! fall outdoor festivals, offering curated crafts, art, food and shopping in downtown Quakertown and the popular Upper Bucks BrewFest in August. Perkasie offers festivals like the Under the Stars Car Show in August and fall festivals. Cap off the year at our Christmas tree lighting ceremonies in downtown Quakertown and Perkasie. In fact, Perkasie has the distinction of being the nation’s oldest continuous community Christmas tree lighting ceremony – and it has a fully restored carousel that operates earlier on the Christmas tree lighting date, as well as select Saturdays during the year. Reimagined Dining The table’s set, and the food’s ready. Food is primal. So is our need to share it. While the pandemic forced our restaurateurs, chefs, and owners to rethink what it means to buy, prep, cook and serve patrons great food, the demand for eating out remained. Many restaurants responded by creating out of the box solutions. Reinvention is on the menu of Bucks County’s culinary pros. So, while the coronavirus pandemic hit this sector with the force of a fist many used the opportunity to re imagine their menus. They reinvented business models. They proved resilient by plating and serving delicious food to patrons, meal after delectable meal. Local, farm fresh ingredients have never been more meaningful. Some chefs even made space for small on-site gardens to grow their own herbs, garnishes, or other staple ingredients. Cocktails to go were temporarily allowed in Pennsylvania, providing a way for bars, pubs, and restaurants to offer signature drinks to patrons, alongside those pizza Margheritas, grilled steaks, chops, seafood, or comfort food dinner orders. Many experimented with menus. Others opted to dive into online ordering or expand services like curbside pickup. Some created takeout menus, while others opted instead to offer the whole house as take-out friendly fare. Those

with access to parking lots or sidewalks expanded outdoor dining, creating more usable seating, and offering those not ready to eat indoors the option to enjoy al fresco meals. For more go to our website @ www.ubcc.org

Farming the land and hand-crafted goods are part of Bucks County’s heritage. With just-right soils, temperatures and a balance of sunshine and rain the dependable cycles honored for generations by our family farmers are resilient. You can rely on June’s ruby red strawberries, Redhaven peaches, and tart crisp September apples, while pumpkins are plentiful for carving, pies, soups, breads, and harvest home decorations. Shopping in Upper Bucks County runs the range. From daily food staples, home accessories, clothing, and outerwear to one of a kind wearable crafts, home accessories and furnishings, we can source just about anything we need or want right in our own backyards. Whether it’s for the home, garden, lawn or landscape, Pennsylvania’s small business sector makes up about 98.2% of employers. We’re a continually evolving microcosm of the entrepreneurial spirit. Take a trip back in time on Quakertown’s “antiques row” or visit the area’s newest public market style food court, the Trolley Barn. KNOWN FOR FARMING Bucks County ranks 12 th out of 67 Pennsylvania counties in agricultural production. There are 824 farms in the county, with an average per farm size of 10 to 50 acres. Most of our farms are still family owned and operated having been passed down from generation to generation. 14

History of Resilience

Upper Bucks County was settled by sturdy stock, many of whom had known hardship and sought a new life in the New World. Today’s natives – whether they’re newcomers or sixth generation residents, continue to fiercely lay claim to the townships and boroughs they call home. In boroughs across Upper Bucks notably Quakertown and Perkasie, the pandemic brought about change – in how we shopped, dined, and lived. Many sidewalks and public parking areas were converted – with the blessing of borough councils and administrators – to outside retail space for shopping and café-style dining. During the 1600s Dutch, Swedish and German settlers came to Quakertown and built their lives from scratch. The “Great Swamp” (as it continues to be known) was home to Native Americans before European’s came north from ports in Philadelphia to settle, build homes in the style of the Old World and work the land. Quakertown has endured through world and civil wars, the ups and downs of the

Industrial Revolution (and associated manufacturing booms) and is – along with other communities – amid 21st century reinvigoration. The roughly 11,500-acre Manor of Perkasie as it was known in William Penn’s time, was surveyed about 1708 and settled by Dutch, Swedish and later those from England. Perkasie, too, has enjoyed cycles of manufacturing and reclamation from the Great Fire in 1988, establishing itself as an incubator for entrepreneurs within a varied and eclectic downtown sector. In 2021 “America’s Hometown” cleared one of three hurdles to become a National Historic District. Its architecture and preservation efforts aim to pay tribute to a rich past by preserving its unique treasures for the future. With an eye to reinvention, Perkasie’s star continues to rise. Known as “Red Hill” Ottsville was formally settled in the early 1700s by Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. The Red Hill Church and school are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A quiet village, Ottsville nevertheless, continues to play an important role as part of Tinicum Township. It is among the oldest European settlements in Upper Bucks County, remarkable for its enduring landscapes, charming roadways, bucolic environment, and close proximity to Lake Nockamixon. PERKASIE, or Pocasie, comes from a Native Leni Lenape word loosely translated as “where hickory nuts are cracked” or “a place to crack nuts.” 16

Reimaged Culture Close enough to major cities like Philadelphia and New York; Upper Bucks communities are blessed to embrace the best of all worlds. From the Delaware River to inland rolling hills, fields and waterways, robust farming communities offering fresh local produce and a distinctive change of seasons few areas are as rich with abundant natural assets and the will to preserve them. These elements provide a foundation to explore our interests and contribute to the common good. Culture is norms, behaviors, traditions and rites we practice and share. When we participate in downtown festivals and events, and even support local businesses by buying their goods and services, we are part of the collective culture. As Upper Bucks is changing – our “salt of the earth” foundation – from mom and pop shops to solopreneurs and new business incubators remains refreshingly the same. From reclaimed structures becoming housing in Perkasie to a hip public market on Broad Street in downtown Quakertown – some of the touchstones we count on to define our way of life and associate with this honest “salt of the earth” region continue to be part of our reimaged culture. We’ve discovered we can connect and reconnect in different ways, using different platforms like social media, virtual meetings and in person events and meet ups. Health care has faced unprecedented change, obstacles and challenges over the past two years. Building and investments are the tangible results of any organization’s commitment – and hospital expansions are never taken lightly.

Upper Bucks County is fortunate to be home to several health care networks and systems – poised to increase service to their communities. Capital building campaigns are aimed at addressing the needs of our growing and increasingly diverse populations. By offering an abundance of worldclass care close to home, health care is not only resilient; it is also reimaged. The coronavirus pandemic revolutionized health care access by accelerating virtual physician treatment and visits. Seeing a doctor online has changed the way care is sourced and delivered for many people. By making care more convenient and easier, patients may avoid complications, rather than waiting too long for an appointment or putting it off altogether. From accelerating and expanding virtual doctor visits – from physical and mental health practitioners – to providing leadership and guidance about

coronavirus pandemic protocols and treatments, our health care systems best serve their communities. In Sellersville, Grand View Health anticipates opening its hospital expansion in 2023 including a 190,000 square foot, six floor pavilion with rooftop helicopter pad access, expanded Intensive Care Unit and Progressive Care Unit services, state of the art patient room technology and enhanced air circulation capabilities in response to infectious diseases like Covid-19. In Milford Township, St. Luke’s University Health Network is investing $72 million to nearly double the size of its existing St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus. A target opening in spring 2023 will add services including expanded cancer care, palliative care, expanded obstetric services and birthing and a neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) unit. Additional space is being constructed and set aside for future department and unit expansion. Lehigh Valley Health Network Health Center at Richland Township offers primary, specialty and express care, blood tests and diagnostic testing – including X-ray and ultrasound services, all under one roof. Also available in Richland Township are women’s services, pediatrics and orthopedic services. Bringing communities high quality care and offering care provider options addresses different patient needs. A Chamber Story

If we’ve learned anything since March 2020 – and we’ve learned an awful lot – the pandemic’s impact was individual and unique to each and every chamber member.

Because of this reality our approach and response had to be both resilient to our core mission, compassionate to our business community’s experiences and specific to meet their needs. Since the beginning, the coronavirus pandemic upended life, work, social activity and how we communicate with one another. Upper Bucks Chamber of Commerce pivoted and re imagined its role in the region’s economy and its welfare. When Zoom became the way businesses met, we reinvented our in-person events to adapt to the virtual environment. We learned – along with you – how to host meaningful events including weekly opportunities to learn and grow. We provided a virtual venue for members and the community to keep up to date with the evolving pandemic

guidance, the impact of mandatory business shutdowns, employment recruiting and reinvention, human resources issues, vaccine timeline rollouts, personal protective equipment (PPE) availability and distribution and much, much more. Because of how we spent time during the early months and first year of the pandemic, we collaborated more closely with organizations – sometimes checking in with them on a weekly basis. Our connection with and open pipeline to Bucks County agencies, commissioners and various local government departments made us a partner to share PPE kits, as well as information about government grants and funding programs aimed at easing the financial burden to our business communities. We no longer take in person events for granted, and we make the most of the interactions we have. We appreciate the quality time spent together and the nuances of face-to-face interactions, probably more and in different ways than any of us could have imagined. We’ve grown, and we’ve learned to plan knowing that anything – and everything can change.

UPPER BUCKS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE was founded in 1954 by Woodrow “Woody” Wehrung, and a group of Quakertown businessmen. His grandson Jason Wehrung, a UBCC past president, continues to honor his family’s legacy — passed down from his grandfather and father Vernon — as a stewardship of community involvement. 24

In a post pandemic economy, what will work look like in a reinvented landscape? As droves of professional and white-collar employees were sent home and encouraged to work from home during 2020 many continue to enjoy more freedom and flexibility in their work lives than ever before. From county and local government officials to attorneys, insurance pros and many others figuring out the short-term pain (how to stay healthy and productive) and creating long term gain (will a remote or hybrid workforce be permanent in my company) continues to evolve in many employment sectors. The evidence around remote work productivity is mixed, and a majority of those who work from home discovered not only improved work productivity and a work/home/life/family balance they’d never imagined. Resilient & Reimagined

From widespread virtual classrooms to health and safety protocols aimed at keeping students, faculty, and staff safe, Upper Bucks County schools have reimagined their classrooms, adapted instruction, and continued to educate the future our workforce. They are: •

Advancing education in STEM (science, technology ,engineering, and math) programs – and bringing building block concepts down to the elementary grades.

• Implementing best practices to prepare students to enter college or skilled trades positions. •

Keeping an eye on the next wave of emerging sectors like pharmaceutical and biotechnology to guide students in cutting edge industries and careers.

• Crafting education to create the next generation of thinkers, movers, idea makers, and entrepreneurs. It starts with reading. Galvanizing reading skills among the youngest learners – those in pre-K to third grade – is among Quakertown Community

School District’s goals. Through the LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training initiative, Quakertown instructors will be better positioned to ensure students in those pivotal early years stay on track and ramp up reading and language skills to be better prepared for the next grades and concepts by learning to learn. The Pennridge Takes Pride initiative at Pennridge School District aims to reinforce social and emotional intelligence and learning. Some key elements include becoming trustworthy, accepting of others, how to be kind and empathetic and building self esteem. Studies indicate students who have finely developed social and emotional intelligence tend to have fewer behavioral problems, are better at goal setting and achievement and are more motivated learners and individuals. At Palisades School District, established partnerships with Bucks County Community College and Lackawanna College (Scranton) give students a leg up to begin college study for careers in medicine, business, global studies, engineering, and design and education before HS graduation. Students from all three Upper Bucks County public school districts may opt to take courses and programs at Upper Bucks County Technical School
