Do you hear it? Walk along any Upper Bucks County rural back road after the spring thaw and April showers, listen closely and be rewarded. The gurgle of groundwater as it swells to the surface. The soft, rich sounds of water threading through new grass, searching for a gully or ravine. The crystal bell-chime of water tripping over smooth stones on its way to the streams it feeds. If you’re lucky, quiet and patient, you might hear all three – all at once! Upper Bucks County is water rich. Water represents renewal, refreshment, growth and survival. After last year’s landscapes, water was a natural fit for us to explore in this year’s edition of Focused Upper Bucks County.

From lake and stream, brook and creek, we’re part of the Delaware River Basin and Perkiomen and Cooks Creek watersheds. We’re generous in this primal, indispensable resource. Bounded by the Delaware River and home to a unique river town culture that defies state lines by nature of its inclusiveness, the “river towns” of New Jersey and Pennsylvania are a tiny pocket of paradise. Evolved over hundreds of years of commerce and trade, stroll along the canal walk. Enjoy breakfast, coffee or dinner overlooking the river. Poke around in specialty shops for handmade craft items and a friendly chat with the proprietor. Take a moment to glimpse perfection reflected over the water’s sheen. Summer festivals, turn of the century architecture, shopping, dining, biking and hiking - resonates with natives and visitors. Lake Nockamixon, the largest lake in Bucks County, is home to a community of migratory water birds and thriving wildlife, just below the water’s gleaming surface. Fisher-folk, boaters, kayakers and picnic enthusiasts populate the lake and park, reminding those who visit how truly special this place is.

The 518-acre wetland Quakertown Swamp, known locally as the Great Swamp, provides nesting and safe haven fledgling habitat for more than 91 bird species, including the region’s signature Great Blue Heron. A favored nesting rookery, the Great Swamp flutters in springtime when the majestic birds return to rustle their plumage, attract a mate and raise their young. Head east on Route 313 – the major thoroughfare from Quakertown to our County Seat and Lake Galena beckons, just off to the side. Located in Peace Valley Park in nearby New Britain Township, Lake Galena offers residents and visitors canoing, fishing and sailing, making it an aqueous island, surrounded by Peace Valley’s luxuriant landscape.

As I venture into retirement’s new ocean waters along the Delaware coast, my rear-view reflects how far we’ve come together. The horizon’s line of sight – whether full of morning sunrise, crashing waves or streaming along rocks in Upper Bucks waterways, is holding steady; ripe with promise.

This is my last Focused Upper Bucks County edition, as Executive Director of UBCC. Three years ago, I gave our small team a charge: To bring this publication in-house and make it our very own. An authentic reflection of this place we call home. I’ve spent the last 18 years in service to UBCC and have lived here most of my life. Along the way I’ve explored our region with delight and wonder. I’ve spent every day learning and growing alongside you. I’ve experienced joy as our annual events and member ranks swell, and we’ve expanded and bolstered our mission and commitment to this community. I’ve caught my breath, as many of you have done, as we strive to remain relevant during scary and skittish economic times. I’ve known sorrow as I watched promising new businesses shutter their doors. I’ve said goodbye, while attending funerals for long-time members.

Upper Bucks County

Close your eyes: Imagine the rustling of Silver maple foliage in June, fresh, green and full from last night’s storms. Or the gritty swoosh of twirling loose soil on a dirt road gathered up into a twist. Even the sound of road noise, when it’s steady, rhythmic and buffered by trees or high fencing, can mimic – from a distance, the sound of ocean crest and tumbled waves.

Take a walk on a back road in Milford, West Rockhill or Bedminster townships after a July thunderstorm, when roadside ravines are swollen and rushing. Get caught in a spring rain storm while shopping in Perkasie’s downtown, or visiting its award winning seasonal farmers’ market on Saturday morning. Tromp though fresh snow hunting the perfect Christmas tree in December, with a steaming cup of hot cocoa in hand. Stand still and hear the chinking sound as hungry water slides over worn rocks in its rush for going

someplace. Known as The Great Swamp, Quakertown’s water table is high as is many of the surrounding municipal landscapes. It makes field farming ideal, because there’s no real need for complicated or expensive irrigation systems. It makes livestock farming easier, too, because water is accessible for large animals like bison, beef or dairy cattle, as well as chickens and turkeys. An essential element, water is synonymous with life. An agreeable water table makes home building less challenging and abundantly stocked wells mean fieldstone homesteads remain viable – and happily occupied, often by generations of the same families – for centuries. Slow and steady or sudden and impatient, we’re blessed to live in Upper Bucks, where water nourishes and sustains. Rain is usually regular, if sometimes unpredictable. Our coffers are usually full to brimming with this most precious, elemental resource. For those of us who plant and tend gardens, sow seeds, dig dahlias or peonies and collect rain water in barrels, we consciously (or not) believe in the flow of cycles and seasons: Autumn follows summer and winter provides a restful snow-pack where everything beneath lies waiting. Whether we watch slowly falling snowflakes or a rare pounding hail storm, we know water will be in abundance ready when we need it.

Water draws us in - it draws us to it. Whether settled in an inner tube to trail a lazy line in a quiet mid-summer amble, a cooler of beer or bottle of wine trailing in the wake or wrestling a white water release in a kayak, most of us relish time spent in, on or near the water. Floating, bobbing, skimming or swimming, we are embraced by pristine water sources and abundant options for water recreation in Upper Bucks County. Lounge on a boat dock and watch water percolate as fledgling fish burble the surface. Cast your line for pumpkinseed sunfish, walleye or white perch. where old-fashioned, hand-made crafts shiny with fresh coats of varnish, puff their way across the landscape. As water carved the cliffs, discover rock climbing in Ralph Stover Park where the Tohickon Creek formed a gorge north of Point Pleasant. With surface names like Neolithic, Tango Wall and Weeping Wall, Cramped Face and Hawk’s Nest Area, take your pick — based on skill, strength and the day’s ambition. Enjoy a hot air balloon ride and see the landscape with an avian’s eye. Streams and shallows are ripe for exploring. Let water lead the way.

One of the two largest tributaries to the Delaware River in Bucks County is Tohickon Creek, which empties into the river at Point Pleasant. The 29.5-mile long Tohickon emerges in Springfield Township, threads through multiple municipalities and is located entirely in Upper Bucks County.

Arts & Entertainment Palette, easel, canvas and brush. For more than a century, Bucks County’s landscapes, stone and stucco farmhouses, barns, bronze fields, pumpkin patches, downtowns and creeks, marshes and streams have captured the imagination, skill and wonder of artists, poets, musicians, natives and visitors. For the past three years the Bucks County Plein Air Festival, held annually in June, draws visual artists out of their studios from across the country and takes them outside to work ‘en plein air’. Plein Air, or painting outside, is often associated with artists like Monet and van Gogh in France, and the New Hope School or Pennsylvania School. These painters bore witness to what they saw: scenes of everyday life, cafes, crowds of people, wheat fields and water lilies. A French method made popular by 19th century Impressionists on both sides of the Atlantic, created an environment shaped by light and weather. In an era of pop-up shops, cafes, bars or cinemas, plein air painting has created more accessible awareness between artists and the public. Look for arts festivals throughout Upper Bucks County such as the annual Tinicum Arts Festival, held in July alongside the river, and downtown spring and fall street fairs. Check on-line for scheduled gallery open houses and impromptu studio tours. The sound of banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass reverberates through jazz to folk, rock to ‘strike up the band’ marches. Look for local performers at cafes, restaurants and outdoor venues. The region enjoys support by both musicians and audiences alike.

Summer is a great time to take in an outdoor concert without travel, high ticket prices or expensive parking. Quakertown’s Univest Performance Center is home to an outdoor summer concert series that draws national talent and big crowds. The Sellersville Theater 1894 provides a year-round line-up. Riverside Symphonia in Erwinna offers Concert Under the Stars along the banks of the Delaware to celebrate America’s birthday. Don’t forget to check out live free summer music at Perkasie Farmers Market, Quakertown Farmers Market and your favorite distillers like Hewn Spirits in Pipersville, offering summer and autumn spirit tastings, bonfires, food trucks and entertainment.

The Delaware Canal towpath is a 58.89 mile long trail along the Delaware River that once provided mule-fueled transport for hard coal from northeastern Pennsylvania to cities along the East Coast.

A fit Johnny Rivers, dressed in satin boxing shorts with fists at the ready and an intense gaze, looks out from a life-sized portrait. Gone but not forgotten, the portrait hangs inside the John Rivers Memorial VFW Post 11322 in Quakertown.

Rivers would have been 100 years old in 2018! Instead he died at 22 on Aug. 21, 1942. Rivers lost his life manning a machine gun during World War II in the Solomon Islands. He and his Marine comrades were fighting for their lives during a fierce attack by Japanese forces in Tenaru, Guadalcanal. They fought until Rivers was dead, another man was blinded and another wounded when their machine gun was taken out of action. Originally from Riverside, NJ, as a young teenager, Rivers found a home in rural Applebachsville, a village in Haycock Township. It’s said he was good on the gridiron and graduated from Quakertown High School. Maybe he played at Tohickon Creek or found his way to the lapping shoreline at Lake Nockamixon. Did he scout for tadpoles, or catch bullfrogs there at twilight? As a young boy from a troubled, broken home, Rivers found salvation – if all too briefly – when

a Haycock family took him in and made him one of their own. Private John “Johnny” Rivers, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve received a posthumous Navy Cross and was awarded a Purple Heart medal for his valor. The northern tier of Bucks County has a long lineage of patriotism dating to the Revolutionary War. No less significant were the sacrifices of Rivers and others who fought and died defending freedom – often an abstract notion – until home and a threatened way of life makes it all too real. Private Wallace Willard Keller was the first Quakertown man killed in France during WWI Quakertown’s American Legion Post 242 was named for him. Founded on Aug. 27, 1919, the original post was located on the second floor of the Wiedner Building. Owned and operated by Howard B. Sine as The Five and 10-Cent store, Sine’s still operates in downtown Quakertown. Keller’s name resurfaced in 1986 when it was discovered that 18 soldiers who died during WWI did not have their names etched in war memorial monuments in Quakertown Memorial Park on Mill Street. A quest followed to discover those other names belonging to the fallen. Newspaper clippings were gathered and researched. Local cemetery pilgrimages were made looking for clues to their identities. The Holy Grail reward was intangible – to discover them and honor them by remembering.

The Sheard’s covered bridge was built in 1873, and is 15’-wide and 130’ long, making it one of Bucks County’s longest bridges— it crosses the Tohickon Creek on Covered Bridge Road.

When you see water cascade over rocks or a staircase there’s a lustrous sheen on the steps. Upper Bucks County is the step braced between the risers. Do you like working with your hands? From a welding certification to a PhD – just about any educational experience and pathway to success may be achieved right here in Upper Bucks County. New programs developed in partnership with Bucks County Community College, Bucks County Workforce Development Board, Inc. and Upper Bucks Career and Technical School aim to provide a route for young adults to succeed in careers right out of high school. And those who’ve graduated high school but not found their niche, new training and fast-track certifications in metalworking are available to residents 18 and older. While blacksmithing has become a boutique craft occupation with centuries old roots, modern metalworkers enjoy a variety of career opportunities in production and precision machining, tool and die making, fabricating and erecting. Credits earned at UBCTS and BCCC are transferable to Bloomsburg University, where students can continue their educations, and/or move right into the workforce. Upper Bucks County’s public school districts feed students to the UBCTS campus, as well as help ready college bound students. Youngsters in ninth grade can select from programs like diesel mechanics, health care, agriculture, culinary arts, law enforcement, welding and more. In addition to metalworking, adult students may learn trades like mechatronics technology, plumbing or carpentry. At UBCTS students can train on state-ofthe-art equipment and pursue a hands-on career.

College may not be the right path for every skill or talent. Recognizing what engages youngsters and supporting their skills can mean the difference between a productive post-graduation young adulthood, or a frustrating hit or miss experience. Getting youngsters, families, educators and government on board is essential to moving trades forward, and filling well paying indemand jobs. In fact, among the top five industries predicted for job growth – those ranking first to third all employ students with vocational and trades education. Support services, waste management and remediation services, and construction trades ranked second and third behind health care and social assistance. And in sixth place for growth sits transportation and warehousing, which would include logistics workers. For the college bound, two-year programs through BCCC are a great way to take the bite out of college education costs by earning an associate’s degree and transferring credits to a four-year college. At nearby Delaware Valley University in New Britain Township, a host of programs provides the path to earning a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree. Head a few miles north to neighboring Lehigh and Northampton counties and you’ll find college programs at Cedar Crest, Lafayette, Moravian and Muhlenberg or study at universities such as DeSales and Lehigh. Milford Township Cornerstone of Bucks County Spurred by the turnpike exit, Milford has become home to St. Luke’s new hospital and thriving businesses accommodated within a framework of planned green space. History permeates from the original Lenape through the era of Mills and Fords. Germans first settled by 1712, William Penn sent English. Swiss and French arrived. Farms emerged along with villages. Milford Square served in-town mills. Spinner created 1700’s sgraffito technique on red ware opposite the Spinnerstown Hotel. The stagecoach route’s Brick Tavern Inn used the same red clay. Roaring 20’s Finland was the “Poconos of Philadelphia, Fineland”. Originally Aurora, the Jamison (Geryville) Publick House was central to the Fries Rebellion of 1799. Steinsburg’s hotel, tannery, coachmaker, butcher, blacksmith, grist mill, creamery, undertakers, bottling works all ceased by the 60’s. New and Old, History and more! Come see for yourself!

Quakertown Borough "The Heart of Upper Bucks County"

The Borough offers a variety of family and youth programs and activities throughout the year. It is home to Quakertown Memorial Park, Quakertown Community Pool, Quakertown Action Park, and the Univest Performance Center, which holds a summer concert series, and a series of events throughout the year. With revitalization efforts, new businesses are joining long established quaint shops and restaurants. The unique mix of old and new makes it a memorable place. Quakertown reflects the history and current life in Upper Bucks County making it a truly great place to live, work, and play.

Richland Township Richland Township has much to offer our community; trails, parks, shopping, restaurants, large preserved areas, housing for all ages, and easy access to major highways. Our beautiful parks all have their unique characteristics. Great Blue Heron Park has a playground, pavilion, and a trailhead for the Brayton Gardens Trail that connects to the Pennsylvania Highlands Trail Network. Veterans Park provides a home to RASA with a new restroom facility. Robert O. Keller Memorial Park includes a pavilion which can be rented for private events or parties, and pickle ball courts. The Township offers free summer movie nights and hosts an annual Community Day. Our Police provide 24 hour coverage for safety. They also host free shredding and drug takeback events. Annually RTPD joins forces with Quakertown Borough PD by taking part in a Bike Rodeo and Shop with a Cop Program. Come out and explore Richland Township!

Upper Bucks Visitor Center Take a “staycation” and see your hometown through a visitor’s eyes. The Upper Bucks Visitor Center is a rich tourism resource, based inside the offices of the Upper Bucks Chamber of Commerce. Out-of town visitors regularly stop by, meet the staff and get recommendations for lunch, dinner or a drink. They get pointers about the best sites in our area to visit: from Ringing Rocks to seasonal farmers’ markets, downtown shopping to summer outdoor concerts, boat or canoe rentals at Lake Nockamixon or hitting the walking trails.
