“There’s no place like home,” Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz. No truer words have ever been spoken. Where ever life leads or takes us – from college to jobs, family or wanderlust, the place we call home is so much more than a roof and four walls. It’s a state of mind: safety, respite, delight, celebration and joy. I’ve traveled throughout Upper Bucks County astonished, pleased and delighted by the sheer beauty of our region. Our good earth’s bounty, and the stewards who keep it, are our communal blessing. I believe the 2020 cover of focused Upper Bucks County perfectly conveys this comfortable feeling. I encourage everyone who picks up and pages through our newest edition, to take a moment to appreciate on its pages and drink in our past, savor our beautiful present, and embrace our unstoppable future. I’m honored and proud to offer my first issue of focused to our residents, community members, businesses and visitors – to showcase what makes us unique and openly charming. But home is so much more than my address. It’s where I entertain, host kid’s birthday parties and family get-togethers. It’s where my husband smokes the best brisket and wings over nut or fruit hardwoods. It’s where I come home at night. Home as refreshment, as comfort and where I’m most content. To feel at home or be at home – I’m sure like me you’ve walked into a new place and immediately felt at ease because of the authenticity of the space, a warm welcome, something yummy baking or fresh cut flowers everywhere. It’s a wonderful greeting, and you’re made to feel it, honored and at ease. Home is a sense of place, even if I can zoom in and find it on Google Earth. I know it’s there, and I can always find my way without a map. Ask anyone you meet who lives in Upper Bucks County and they happily name names: Bedminster, Perkasie, Quakertown or Milford, Pipersville or Tinicum. Home and the rich good earth it’s built upon is ours, and we’re blessed. Home is where I always return. My parent’s family home in Sellersville and its surrounding community rooted my love for Bucks County into my college years at Penn State in Happy Valley. Upper Bucks County will always be home for me.

Or shop for cascading hanging baskets for the front door, filled to overflow with begonia. From Perkasie to Quakertown, Ottsville and beyond, plant and garden people love to help others – they’ll chat you up over the azaleas and share what they know. Our farmers and gardeners never take earthworms for granted. They’re a sure sign of great

THE DOGWOOD, once found from Maine’s southern coast to the northern tip of Florida and westward to the Mississippi, is Bucks County’s official tree. 8

Recreation Take a deep, full breath. What do you smell in “Penn’s Woods”? White pine and blue spruce? Rambling wild honeysuckle? Freshly tilled fields with a mix of corn sweet scent and leftover tang from last night’s rain? Remember pressing colorful autumn leaves between waxed paper as a kid to trim and hang in windows? Or doing bark rubbings with a clean sheet of white paper and your favorite crayons or artist charcoal. Like plentiful wellsprings, earth’s abundance births forests and foliage, attracts native fauna for bird and wildlife watching, and creates a wonderland stewardship we all can share. Earth is one of the four classical elements along with air, fire and water. Our earth and soil in Upper Bucks County are rich, fertile places. Unspoiled landscapes are as natural as breathing and ideal for active outdoor recreation, passive pastimes and for working your own little corner of paradise, with a shovel and well-worn gloves. Whether a balcony filled with terracotta planters or a proper garden carved from a side yard, visit a local nursery yard and take to the soil. Get fit through biking, hiking and walking the dog. Enjoy picnics in the park or friendly disc golf games. Keep the great outdoors in mind for camping and seasonal explorations any time of year. Look for pick-up “shirts and skins” basketball games, or learn pickleball and sign up for a tournament. Sign up the kids for baseball and softball leagues, where they’ll discover the meaning of personal best alongside how to handle a bat or ball. Where else can you transform natural rock formations into a singing alfresco concert for anyone with a hammer in hand? Ringing Rocks Park in Upper Black Eddy, that’s where. Don’t be a bystander, grab some gear. Dust off that bicycle helmet, pump up the basketball, or give something brand new a try. Our Outdoor Tips: Look for swimming, boating, picnicking, hiking, disc golf and cross-country skiing in Lake Nockamixon. Horseback riding at Haycock Stables in Haycock Township. National music headliner concerts, youth leagues and nature trails in Quakertown. Basketball, more disc golf and dog walking and biking in Milford Township. Pickleball and nature trails in Richland Township. Tubing, canoeing and rafting along the Delaware in Point Pleasant. Pumpkin picking in Blooming Glen. Remember what it felt like to finger paint? Pure joy! While primarily thought of as an educational and therapeutic tool – and specific to young children, finger painting covers the gamut in age and outcomes. For all ages finger painting is a great way to explore creativity. Consider this: Modern artists working right now create using their hands and fingers instead of assorted brushes. You may not have a brush handy, but chances are you’ll always have your fingers for creative work. Look for semi-annual arts festivals in downtown Quakertown, hosted by Quakertown Alive! Arts Alive! offers block party, street events for high quality juried artists and crafters to showcase and sell their wearable, decorative and functional arts and crafts. For 70 years the Tinicum Arts Festival held in July on the grounds of the Tinicum Park along the Delaware River has brought together artists and crafters with discerning patrons. Live music, breezy shade trees and fresh lemonade refreshes young and old through sight, sound and sturdy ground underfoot. The annual festival benefits the Tinicum Civic Association, and it’s run entirely by volunteers! Throughout the summer months look for artist gallery openings, studio tours, classes and arts events throughout Upper Bucks County. Meet the artists. Experience their worlds through fine art and craft, and find a place in your home for something unique and handcrafted.

Look for outdoor Quakertown Band concerts, too. At the Perkasie Summer Concert Series emerging talent takes the stage, and outdoors at Perkasie Farmers Market from June through October, look for local talent performing along with vendors. Tickets sell fast for national headliners at the Sounds of Summer Concert Series held at The Univest Performance Center in downtown Quakertown. Live music is everywhere: from café’s to microbreweries. Where food trucks gather and bonfires signal harvest time, look for old friends and make some new. While summer is a busy time with festivals and community day celebrations don’t forget area fall and winter for concerts, jazz band competitions, student art shows and high school musicals! Check our three public school districts’ websites: Palisades, Pennridge and Quakertown, for listings. Find events like the YMCA Food Truck Festival in Quakertown, Perkasie Fall Festival, and St. Patrick’s Day & Celtic Festival in Sellersville. Get in the Yule-tide spirit with outdoor Christmas tree lighting ceremonies – enjoy Victorian-era strolling carolers in Quakertown. Roll back the clock to 1909 and be part of the annual holiday traditions in downtown Perkasie. PENNSYLVANIA IS DIVIDED INTO SIX WINE GROWING REGIONS, with Bucks County in the southeast region. Our longer growing season includes long hot stretches. It’s why you’ll find classic European varietals and blends like Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir style wines in our tasting rooms. AND DON’T FORGET THE SUDS!! Shopping Few joys are as simple as a deep red tomato packed with sunshine, heat and just pulled from the vine. It’s just not summer without a classic BLT – composed of thick slices of fat, Big Boy tomatoes, snap-crisp Romaine and hand smoked slabs of local bacon. Add a hearty schmear of good mayo and lightly toasted sourdough bread. Now you’ve got something!! Wait, there’s a little juice running down your chin…. Upper Bucks County enjoys a bumper crop of farmers markets. We have roadside stands, and we’re home to avid gardeners who’ll put out surplus harvest from evening picking at the end of a driveway with an honor jar to pay. Rhubarb in May. Sunflowers, stocks and zinnia bunches in July. Local brown eggs in a cooler. Tomatoes, potatoes, onions, peppers and more. Our good earth is where the fruits (and veggies) of the land come right off the field moments after picking. If you time it right, those gifts from the land head straight into your shopping bag or basket. Scout a local farmers market the next time you’re pantry needs restocking, and enjoy a community where fresh from the farm is part and parcel of weekend living. While we enjoy seasonal abundance and pick-your-own operations – especially during fall harvest time –

roadside stands are another way to stock up on fresh produce staples. Shopping in Upper Bucks County runs the gamut. Look for boutique and unique gifts for the home and garden. Perkasie’s phoenix is strong and smart. Quakertown’s history is a visual touchstone and Riegelsville played an important industrial role in shipping and trade.

It was an ordinary summer day in June, 1988, in Perkasie Borough. A fire started by two youngsters raged out of control and before its hungry flames were quenched more than $9 million of damage and about 15 percent of property was laid waste. Thirty years on Perkasie’s consistent, thoughtful downtown revitalization efforts are yielding a cohesive renaissance. Rather than rebuilding the status quo borough officials, community members, business owners and economic consultants are as hungry as that decade’s gone fire to dig deep, and create a vibrant future. Since the catastrophic Great Fire of Perkasie this Upper Bucks County community has been reinventing itself. Smart new housing crafted from defunct manufacturing sites, fresh redevelopment – from boutique shops and retailers to co-working business start-up space and inventive business sourcing aims to honor the borough’s past and family-first legacy, while keeping pace with a dynamic and changing American culture.

Quakertown takes revitalization seriously, too. Long-time natives are fierce about their history – whether it means honoring architecture or respecting the past through festivals, home and garden tours or an extensive archive of memorabilia, photographs and even grainy, silent short films. These elements ensure not just pride of place, but a rooted touchstone, preserved for future generations to recognize, and call their own. A new public market, crafted from four adjacent buildings on East Broad Street and patterned after successful markets here and abroad, aims to divert traffic passing through the downtown while serving residents local wine, beer and spirits, provisions and comestibles and of course great food to enjoy or take home. Along the Delaware River and home to “Mansions Row” Riegelsville Borough was a capital of commerce during the early 1800s as goods moved from Easton to Bristol and Philadelphia along the Delaware Canal. An important trade route for coal, stone, iron and food crops, Riegelsville became a giant among American cities during its mid-19th century heyday. Twenty-first century Riegelsville maintains its lush, picturesque landscape, and an important place in Upper Bucks County’s lexicon as a gateway north to the Lehigh Valley. Did you know the word culture comes from the Latin word colere, which means cultivation, to nurture or grow something? Tending the earth – another word for colere – our unique culture surrounds us. A gathered heritage knits us together. Whether we’re ninth generation natives or newcomers to the region the land is our inheritance. It’s rooted in seasons of fallow and plenty. In full fields of corn, soy or sorghum (an Old World cereal or grain, mainly used to feed livestock), in perfect peach orchards, October’s plentiful pumpkin patches, ruddy apples and in acres of rye and wheat fields.

While the farm-to-table movement has been around for a while we’ve always known the best meals come from the family-farm down the road, a favored stand you visit in season on the way home from work, or your own backyard garden. Peel back some late July corn husk from a farmers stand and allow its sweet scent to fill you. There’s nothing quite like it. For those without a little land or garden patch to call their own, a feast can grow from patio or porch, deck, or even balcony container gardens. We’re not afraid to get our hands dirty in Upper Bucks County – it’s a part of who we’ve always been. We understand and live the maxim, ‘you reap what you sow’. We’re honest folk. We make choices. SPEAKING OF GROUNDING, Bucks County is home to 475 miles of trails — perfect for every skill level - from beginners to experienced overland trekkers. 22

LifeQuest, best known for the skilled nursing facility and day care it has provided to the region for over 35 years, is proud to announce the completion of The Village at LifeQuest, a modern concept for today’s assisted living community. The new facility’s 123 units range from a 350-square foot studio suite to a 700-square foot two-bedroom companion suite. The building includes 18 companion suites, 49 one-bedroom units and 56 studio units. This building connects with the existing LifeQuest Nursing Center, sharing a newly constructed, state of the art kitchen and commissary, to be used for both buildings. The Village at LifeQuest will be part of Milford Village, a planned community, which is on 206 acres surrounding LifeQuest Nursing Center and LifeSpan Daycare in Quakertown. Eventually, Milford Village will offer other housing options as well, including single family homes, townhomes, condominiums, apartments, independent living for seniors and secured memory care, along with retail establishments. The Milford Village campus is conveniently located on John Fries Highway which provides easy access through northern Bucks County. With its’ close proximity to I-476, it also has access from Philadelphia to Scranton as well as the Lehigh Valley. St. Luke’s Hospital Network is currently constructing St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus, a new hospital to replace the old Quakertown Hospital, that will be located on 40 acres of Milford Village property and be open in December, 2019.

LifeQuest is a not-for-profit organization that provides senior care, skilled nursing and child daycare services in the Quakertown and Lehigh Valley areas. Our operations include: • LifeQuest Nursing Center - a 140-bed skilled nursing facility, inclusive of 20 short-term rehab beds, which is undergoing some renovation to include a 16-bed secured memory care unit as well as renovated dining, reception and garden areas. • LifeSpan Day Care - child care for ages 6 weeks to 12 years with locations in Quakertown, East Greenville and Allentown.
