A I S E N M A E V I T C E COLL Defense Secretary Dolfin Lorenzana issued a memorandum ordering the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to have the necessary preparations needed in order for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB). This is in accordance with the move of President Rodrigo Duterte to have the former president buried at the historical grounds in order for the nation to move on and heal. The move has since divided the nation even more and has started a protest action to condemn the decision of Duterte. However, Marcos loyalists also started showing their support for the former dictators burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The move of President Duterte to have the dictator buried at this site is a blatant disregard of the thousands of activists and journalists who died fighting against the Marcos dictatorship. The President must have forgotten reading his history books or even considered doing his research. He is blinded by his close ties with the Marcos family that he even considered doing this move. Established in 1947, Libingan ng mga Bayani was first known as the Republic Memorial Cemetery. It was established by the Philippine government to commemorate the lives of the fallen Filipino soldiers who fought in World War II. Its existence was in accordance with Republic Act 289, which provides for “the construction of a national pantheon for presidents of the Philippines, national heroes, and patriots of the country.” The law, signed by President Elpidio Quirino, states that the cemetery is supposed to commemorate the presidents, national heroes, and patriots, “for the inspiration and emulation of this generation and of generations still unborn.” Ferdinand Marcos does not fit the qualifications to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani for he did not ress.com ctive.wordp uplbperspe l.com ai gm e@ ctiv uplbperspe

serve as a soldier during the World War II. Throughout his political career, he portrayed himself as a heroic guerilla leader during his campaign period against former President Corazon Aquino. In an article by the New York Times in 1986, they disproved Marcos’ claims of being a solider who served during the war. Does the Libingan ng mga Bayani, a resting place of around 49,000 soldiers, statesmen, heroes, and martyrs, deserve a man who lied to the entire Filipino nation? Does having Marcos buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani contradict the law signed by President Elpidio Quirino? Does former President Ferdinand Marcos serve as an inspiration and emulation of this generation and of generations still unborn if he declared Martial Law and ruthlessly killed anyone who opposed his administration? The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) has its first share of heroes who suffered during the time of Martial Law. Leticia Ladlad, a magna cum laude and the first woman Editor-in-Chief of Aggie Green and Gold, was abducted together with her comrades in Paco Church in Manila in 1975. The group disappeared without a trace. Until now, they are not forgotten nor will they ever be. The wounds that the Martial Law has caused will always be a scar and that is what the Duterte administration needs to realize. The UPLB Perspective traces its roots from the time of Martial Law. The publication was the first one to be brought back in the whole country after the dictatorship of Marcos. Under Rogelio Sese, the first Editor-in-Chief of UPLB Perspective, it
