FROM THE PUBLISHER

I was blessed to have two incredible role models growing up, both of whom were self-employed entrepreneurs who did their best at creating a work-life balance that prioritized my sister and I over their own wants and needs. Dad was a financial advisor and planner who decided to practice what he preached after 17 years of teaching upper division business and finance at Chico State. Mom was a tenacious Realtor whose negotiation skills remain legendary. Both moved to Chico from overseas, chasing the American dream and the promise of a life of their choosing, proportional only to how hard they worked. I still have yet to see anyone work as hard, and they continue that work ethic in business to this day.

Though both had their fair share of hurdles on the road to success, the ones that stood in front of my mother continue on as the most memorable. They both faced an uphill battle as newly-minted Americans, but she had another label working against her—she was a woman. Breaking into the local maledominated real estate industry of the 1980s and early-1990s was no easy task, and there were plenty of men around who felt it was their calling to make it more difficult. I still remember the things that were said by "colleagues" and how they affected her. She wasn't alone in the experience either, as many of her closest friends have shared similar stories with me over the years. Even so, she persevered, continuing to hold her head high, knock on strangers' doors, prove her mettle with her peers, and elevate herself to a household name in real estate. Her success is undoubtedly impressive, but even more so when you know what it took for her to get there.

Our Women in Business issue has always held a special place in my heart, having witnessed what it takes for women like my mother to make their mark as businesspeople. Though the real estate industry has come a long way in the past 30 years, there are still plenty of industries and geographic areas where women have to fight to be treated with the same respect and consideration as men. You'll find proof of this in a number of the articles in this issue, and we look forward to the day when that will no longer be the case.

This issue introduces 55 women in Butte County who have dared to dream and worked tirelessly to succeed in the business world. We're humbled by their efforts, thankful for the commitment to their craft, and honored to publish their stories. We hope they encourage you to take the next step in following your own aspirations, no matter how difficult they may seem.

Lisa Bristow, Becky Prater, and Marisa Bauer form the perfect partnership, delivering platinum-level service to the real estate market and providing opportunities for women to succeed in the industry.

A Business with Heart

Every business plays a role in its community, but few can claim the kind of impact Little Red Hen has. Starting as a swim group, Little Red Hen has grown into a patchwork of businesses that provide dignity and a career path to those with developmental disabilities. As a result of a statewide funding shift, the organization could use our help now more than ever.

Erika Birkholm was born and raised in Chico. When her brother was diagnosed with autism, her mother started the seedlings of Little Red Hen as a swim group in their backyard, with the hope of helping others like him. After graduating from UCSB, Erika returned to Chico to help her mother with the growing organization, which now included a nursery that employed several developmentally disabled individuals. It was one of the first businesses of its kind that did not pay its developmentally disabled employees below minimum wage, paving the way for laws to be made protecting their labor.

“I loved the mission and what we were doing for the community.” Erika explains, “I was here helping for a couple of years before I was offered a job at CNN working for Larry King Live. The experience was incredible, and our team won two

Peabody Awards, but I continued to help with Little Red Hen remotely during my time with the show. While I was there, we built up six stores and three horticultural divisions. I would fly up to help whenever possible, and when Larry King retired, I had options to continue in broadcasting but decided to come back and see how I could help the community.”

Erika returned to Chico and continued Little Red Hen’s expansion. At one point, they employed 175 employees locally with developmental disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and more. 90% of their employees throughout the organization had developmental disabilities, and the remaining 10% were there to teach and coach. As they grew, Erika and her team created new businesses to fill needs and skill sets within their community, opening new opportunities and career paths to those who might not have had them. As a result, many of their employees went on to find competitive careers in the general workforce. Erika notes that employees have always been excited about the opportunity to work and succeed.

Little Red Hen offered these jobs at fair pay through state support and revenues from each business, but state funding for their category of employment services

was recently eliminated. As a result, they’ve been aggressively working on ways to stay true to their mission and keep the developmentally disabled community gainfully employed. They are doing their best to maintain as many employees as possible and could use our help.

“Our program is based on in-store and online sales, donations, and community support.” Erika explained, “All Little Red Hen stores now operate independently without support from the state, but we aren’t letting it stop us. We’ll continue our mission to bring the most unique products to our communities. We believe that just because someone has a disability, it doesn’t mean they can’t work. We’re relying on our community to help support the stores so we can continue to provide dignity and a career path for these incredible individuals.”

With a beautiful mission that benefits our community in many ways, there’s no shortage of reasons to support the Little Red Hen companies in Chico. Visit them online at www.LittleRedHen.org and see how you can support the developmentally disabled in our community by shopping at one of their stores or online today.

A family business

Effie Khaki and Sherry Calbert have been full-time Realtors since the start—Effie for 36 years and Sherry for 35. They never moonlighted or worked the job part time. The business has been their passion since they started, and full-time always meant 60-70 hours per week. As a result, it probably comes no surprise when they say they’ve seen it all. More importantly though, they’ve seen it multiple times.

“Everything is cyclical.” Effie says, “You watch the news and hear the alarm bells about one thing or the other— high interest rates, high home prices, lack of inventory, etc. We’ve heard and seen it many times before. We were selling homes when interest rates were in the double digits, so these pale in comparison, though we understand most buyers are comparing rates with what they saw just a few years ago. If interest rates ever shot up to double digits like

they were in the late 70s through late 80s, I’d be wary of buying a home, but competition is inversely proportional, which means you’d likely get a better deal on a home now than when interest rates drop.”

Sherry continues, “At this point, we’ve seen interest rates rise and fall, prices rise and fall, and demand rise and fall; we’ve seen it all so many times, none of it is surprising anymore. In the end, it all balances out. It’s important to know what the difference is in terms of long-term cost between buying and renting. Potential buyers are sitting on the sidelines thinking now isn’t the right time to jump in, but with rental prices being incredibly high themselves, most are surprised at how affordable owning can be versus renting. More importantly, buyers build equity and actually own an asset which has proven to be one of the

best investments historically. We always tell our clients to sit down with us and use our expertise to go over their options.”

Not only have they amassed a stockpile of knowledge and exprerience over their 35+ years in business, but they’ve created lifelong friendships too.

“We’ve been blessed to work with so many incredible people throughout our time in real estate.” Effie says, “We’ve become so close with so many of them and are now helping some of our first clients' grandkids buy and sell their properties. It means so much to us to be trusted by our clients but also across generations of families.”

Sherry agrees, “We’ve always believed that when you work with us, you’re family, and relationships are what built our businesses. Past clients have become some of our closest friends; we travel with them, dine with them, go to their kids' weddings, and have even convinced some of them to become Realtors themselves!”

Through it all, Effie and Sherry have remained loyal to the office they started at, Century 21 Select in Chico. With 77 agents, it is the area’s largest real estate office, and the two couldn’t be happier with their decision.

“We’re open every day of the week for our clients.” Sherry says, “There’s always someone there to help. We even provide a number of free services, like a notary, to make our clients’ lives easier.”

Effie continues, “Truly, our clients mean everything to us and our office. Our annual client appreciation party is proof of it, with current and past clients visiting from near and far. We absolutely love the opportunity to reconnect with everyone.”

Effie Khaki and Sherry Calbert epitomize the strength, friendship, and success we’ve been so honored to discover throughout our women in business issues, and their commitment to their clients and community couldn't be more incredible. If you’re looking to buy or sell real estate, or need advice, give Effie or Sherry a call! Effie can be reached at (530) 514-3334 and Sherry at (530) 514-4855.

FINDING FAMILY AT BETTY MAE'S

Phyllis and Rebecca LaMalfa know food—it’s in their blood. Phyllis grew up in Chico in her mother’s kitchen learning family recipes. In college, she managed a pie shop on the corner of Second and Broadway Streets, baking and running the business. It was the first step in her dream to open a shop of her own someday. When she met her husband, she put those dreams on hold, deciding to have kids and raise them instead.

“As a kid, I remember Mom always throwing lavish Christmas parties.”

Rebecca says, “I remember looking through cookbooks and cooking with her and my grandmother. My grandfather on my dad’s side was Sicilian. He had a huge garden and was always canning. Cooking was everywhere, so it’s no surprise I decided to go to culinary school.”

Rebecca graduated with two degrees from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, before working with some of the biggest names in the culinary world. During the years following graduation, she worked with Chef Daniel Boulud, Chef Tom Colicchio, and later Chef Michael Mina at his two-Michelinstarred restaurant in San Francisco’s Fairmont. Rebecca moved to Las Vegas to help Chef Mina with his namesake at The

Bellagio, and moved again to Chicago to help the Sheeran Brothers open their restaurant, Trenchermen, before being called to participate in Top Chef on the Food Network. She became the first chef for the Virgin Hotel brand, working closely with and cooking for Sir Richard Branson. Finally, Rebecca moved to Detroit, Michigan, taking a step back to consult and start a family before deciding to return to California.

“I had been cooking and giving my food away as long as I can remember.” Phyllis says, “I decided to open a little shop and sell my food instead. Rebecca started helping me put Betty Mae’s together in 2021, before she and her husband moved back, and we’ve been growing ever since. We started with a focus on dinners you could take home on Tuesdays and Fridays, along with a full deli case, tons of pastries—including cookies, cupcakes, pies, and so much more. We got so busy during the holidays that we kept blowing the breakers in our electrical panel, so we had to look for a new location.”

The duo found a new, larger home for Betty Mae’s at 131 Meyers Street in Chico, previously home to Lovely Layers Cakery. The bigger location has allowed them to expand into coffee, breakfast, and lunch

while maintaining their smorgasbord of pastries. They also offer custom catering, which has been a massive success for the two.

“Everything we do is custom.” Rebecca says, “Mom wanted to start making charcuterie boards, so we decided to make the best ones possible. We make every kind of board, but we often make vegan and custom allergy-friendly boards. None of our stuff is the same, and we never tell anyone, ‘No.’ Before looking elsewhere, we call colleagues and farmers to figure out how to source the best options locally, but we focus on California providers. We look to source new products daily to provide our customers the highest quality at the best possible price.”

Phyllis and Rebecca plan to open a private dining room with a bar and event space next door to Betty Mae’s within six months. It will be able to accommodate up to 40 people and will serve as the perfect place to gather with family, friends, and colleagues alike while delighting in the culinary wonders Betty Mae’s has to offer. Nested in community

It must have been Chico’s windiest day as I parked in front of the Nest Bedding showroom in Chico’s Meriam Park. A table sat outside the front door, stacked high with sheets, pillows, and a comforter, all valiantly defying the wind’s whims. Gust after gust, the table and its contents stood strong, proving unshakeable and offering unexpected foreshadowing to the person I was to meet inside.

Brooke Alexander entered the showroom, offered a firm handshake, and sat down to discuss the mattress industry with me. The conversation was a breath of fresh air, and just as the products sitting on the table outside, she too proved to be steadfast and determined in the face of whatever the world threw her way.

Brooke grew up in Magalia and moved to Virginia at 18 to become a certified massage therapist. “I love the world of health and wellness.” She said, “My family is full of nurses and doctors, and I

am fascinated by how the body moves. I started doing travel massage therapy, accompanying athletes on 500-mile bicycle races, and Iron Man events. Eventually, I moved to LA, where my story in the mattress industry began.”

Brooke’s father dreamed up Nest Bedding in 2011 to offer lower costs and transparency in the luxury mattress industry, which is known for large markups and excess marketing. Eventually, he wanted to expand to L.A.; his daughter was the perfect person to help him do that.

“E-commerce was just taking off.” Brooke explained, “There was a new innovative style of shipping a bed in a box, and we rode that rocket ship. We had no middleman markups, our mattresses were non-toxic, and we offered 365-day return policies alongside removable comfort layers to keep the mattress comfortable. Our first store was in Berkeley, and I

helped my dad expand into Southern California, first in Studio City, then Santa Monica and Costa Mesa. I went to my first market at age 23 and spent most of my years flying back and forth across the U.S., opening and maintaining our 14 stores. It gave me an amazing crash course in communicating with people, and I could apply what I learned with body work and chronic pain to educate our staff and help design our products for our customers' needs.”

When COVID-19 arrived, the landscape changed for Nest Bedding as it did for many other businesses. Brooke led her team in pivoting to a fully e-commerce model, translating the brand’s knowledge and customer experience to their online platform.

“There’s a lot of emotion when it comes to mattress shopping.” Brooke explained, “When you sleep terribly, you enter with that energy. We wanted to make the experience as low-risk and pleasant as possible, so we offered our industryleading 365-day return policy and online sleep specialists to guide you to the perfect mattress. We’re confident we have the right fit for just about everyone.”

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Brooke has made her mark and actively works to shatter existing paradigms. “My dad didn’t care if I was a woman.” She said, “He loved my ideas and how I connected with people. Things are changing slowly, and the challenges are still there, but I love seeing how women who run businesses do their part to improve the world. At Nest Bedding, we believe in making a positive impact in our communities, and the 25 people working for our company are all committed to that mission. Part of making our communities better is making people happier. We spend a third of our lives sleeping and want to make that time as comfortable for our customers as possible. Rested people tend to be happier people.”

If you have chronic pain or are simply looking for a better night’s rest, visit Brooke and her team at Nest Bedding at 1905 Notre Dame Blvd, Suite 140 in Chico’s Meriam Park. You can also find them online at www.NestBedding.com.

Lawyers that Fight for You

There is no shortage of lawyers in Chico and the surrounding areas, but how do you know which firm is right for you, your case, and your company? Finding local representation rooted in this community and willing to fight for you can be confusing. To answer those questions, it helps to know something more about the attorneys and their practice before they begin working with you.

Patricia Savage and Nicole Reimer are the founding partners of Savage, Reimer & Associates, LLP. Patricia explains that as a largely woman-based firm, they bring something rare and wonderful to the field. She says, “We offer the best of what can be brought as hard negotiators, practical lawyers, and intuition about our clients’ small and large needs.”

Ms. Savage initially intended to become an environmental lawyer protecting clean water and air. However, her first job as an attorney was with an employment lawyer, and she found her niche there. She says, “Being a lawyer utilizes the best of my native skills, including reading, writing, thinking, and research, all while connecting with and helping people.”

Nicole’s career in law began after she discovered she enjoyed classes like constitutional and media law more than her journalism classes. Rather than pursuing a job in journalism following graduation, she decided to attend law school here in Chico. She says, “Your life goes down a certain path, whether that’s what you plan or not. I clearly had different plans, and now it feels like this is how my life was supposed to turn out. It feels like everything’s clicking.”

Patricia and Nicole share an extraordinary relationship, and while both women are total fighters when it comes to representing their clients, when they work together, they are incredibly cooperative. Patricia says, “That gives us a really powerful place to steer from because we get along so well and understand what it’s like to be a female fighter in what is still really a man’s world.”

The firm focuses mainly on business, employment, and estate law. Nicole concentrates on the various aspects of business and estates, including trust litigation and administration, corporate filings, estate planning, litigation, and trial

work. Patricia focuses on employment law, business law, and trial work. She also has a separate business in mediation, ADR North, Inc., which she plans to grow into as she moves closer to retirement. The firm is also committed to the client relationships it has developed. Sometimes, that means representing clients in a new area to ensure they are treated respectfully and with care.

Patricia explains, “We provide aggressive defense for businesses who find themselves being sued by employees, other businesses, or a host of other issues they may face.” They also provide advice and recommendations on how to avoid lawsuits in the future. The firm agrees that it is unified in helping and protecting people while gaining their trust and giving them a place to be heard.

If you’re looking for a firm that will stand up for you, treat you fairly, and listen, contact Savage, Reimer & Associates, LLP. Their office is located at 1550 Humboldt Road, Ste. 4 in Chico. You can find them online at www.sralawoffice.com and reach them by phone at (530) 809-1851.

Happy at Home

A list of Chico’s women in business would not be complete without Shelly Blanshei, the dynamo responsible for several of Chico’s favorite hotspots. After returning to Chico from San Francisco in 1994, she opened her first business, Bidwell Perk, with her then-husband, Lance. There were only three other coffee shops in town at the time, and their café proved to be precisely what residents were craving. The success propelled them to sell the coffee shop and launch a fresh new concept called Teaz Me in 2004. In the 21 years since, the business rebranded as T. Bar and now serves healthy meals and delicious tea creations in Chico, Redding, Sacramento, and Rocklin—with more locations on the way.

“I learned a lot over the years and made plenty of sacrifices.” Shelly said, “The biggest thing I’ve learned since COVID was the importance of work-life balance. We recently hired a CEO to run the business, giving me time for other hobbies I love. Lance and I still own it, but it’s nice to be able to experience the business in a different way.”

Baking was at the top of that hobby list, and Shelly decided to lean into it fully. “Baking is just pure joy.” She explained, “I wanted to extend my living space from my house to my garage and turn my home into an oasis where everything that fills my cup is right within reach. I really admired Ina Garten, author of the

cookbook Barefoot Contessa. She built a barn beside her house, where she films all her TV shows. I was staring at my garage and wanted to do what she did, in my own way.”

She decided to call Eric Enns at HIWA Builders to make her dreams a reality. “I had long admired Eric's work.” Shelly said, “When he arrived, I explained I wanted to wake up in the morning, take 20 steps to my future baking barn, bake, and create for the rest of the day. He took my needs and started coming up with ways we could remodel my garage to bring those ideas to life. We kept chiseling away and fine-tuning those ideas until we got the permits and started the building process.”

PHOTOS BY

Eric and his team set out to maximize the 380-square-foot garage by turning it into an additional dwelling unit (ADU) to meet Shelly’s needs for baking and hosting guests. “We kept the same footprint and the same roofline.” Shelly explained, “Eric added skylights to brighten up the space and built a large kitchen with a huge island in the middle. I wanted the garage to be multipurpose so I’d have an additional space for someone to stay in comfortably if they were visiting. To accomplish that, Eric added a Murphy bed into one of the walls, a nice-sized bathroom, and left space for a sofa or chairs. His wife, Nikole Enns of Iko Design Studio, did all the interior design, and I absolutely love it!”

To make the transition from home to hobby seamless, Eric and his team connected the house to the garage with a large deck, using the giant tree in the backyard as its centerpiece. The result is precisely what Shelly had envisioned.

“Eric is a visionary.” Shelly raved, “He’s just so creative. He helps you think differently and reach for possibilities you didn’t even know you wanted, making whatever you envision so much better. Eric added a swing to the tree in the backyard, and it gave the space a whole new level of coolness. Now, when people come over, all they want to do is enjoy the swing. He and his team were just so easy to work with, and I enjoyed not only their work but also their company.”

Nikole’s interior design work left an indelible mark on Shelly as well. “Nikole is just the most zen person.” Shelly smiled, “I would meet with her and go over ideas. Her follow-through was so timely. I never felt like I was waiting on her; she just gets things done. She’s very professional and calm, and that calm translates into the feel of the space. Like Eric, she has bold ideas and pushes you to think differently, but ultimately leaves the decision-making to you. She was so respectful of what I wanted and delivered on everything perfectly. I enjoyed her work so much that I’m having her redesign the interior of my home now too!”

Happy at home, Shelly now has the space she dreamed of to enjoy the hobby she loves most. “I’ve done a lot of construction over the years, building seven stores from the ground up.” Shelly laughed, “I know the importance of communication and how easy it can be for things to go badly. Eric and Nikole were incredible from beginning to end, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking to create the space of their dreams. Everyone who worked on the project was just wonderful, and I couldn’t be happier with their work.”

If you want a space that speaks to you, look no further than Eric and Nikole Enns. Call Eric at (530) 924-4070 or visit HiwaBuilders.com. Nikole can be reached by phone at (530) 520-1175 and found online at IkoDesignStudio.com.

Feeding the community

Originally from Pakistan, Sophia Ahmed moved to the U.S. just over five years ago and opened a restaurant in New Jersey. When the pandemic hit, she closed her restaurant and looked for an opportunity to start over. Thanks to her friend, Farshad, of Azad’s Martial Arts, she found that fresh start in Chico.

Sophia moved to town in 2021 and focused on rebuilding her life. She began taking online classes to pursue a career in the medical field and eventually secured a position at Chico Eye Center, where she worked her way up to become an ophthalmic assistant. Her coworker and friend, Laurie Abarca, learned about her previous experience as a restaurant owner and mentioned a downtown location that had recently become available for lease. After visiting the spot together, Sophia decided to lease the space and open Sofi’z Kitchen and Bar at 134 Broadway Street in Downtown Chico.

“I wasn’t sure how people would respond since there wasn’t a Pakistani restaurant in town.” Sophia said, “I didn’t know Chico that well, but Laurie, Dr. Arregui, and the rest of Chico Eye Center encouraged me to follow my passion. Farshad reminded me that the only limits were the ones I set for myself, so I took that to heart and went for it. I’m so glad I did. I’m obsessed with my restaurant, and the community has shown so much appreciation for my hard work.”

Sophia doesn’t use the word obsession lightly either—she is truly committed to every facet of her business. On any given day, you’ll find her prepping ingredients, cooking food, serving her customers, and cleaning the restaurant alongside one of her employees. Her ability to do so much and run an entire restaurant with only one other person is remarkable.

“I named the restaurant Sofi’z because

I wanted customers to know my commitment to it.” Sophia said, “I have a hand in every part of the business to ensure quality and care, whether cooking for customers or serving them. I love interacting with them! Creating new menu items leaves me feeling fulfilled creatively, and it makes me so happy to know that they’re enjoying something I made for them. There are few experiences quite like it. As an actress, I was used to playing so many different roles. It’s the same feeling when I’m working in my restaurant, and I put 100% of myself into it every day.”

Sophia’s newest dish is a deliciously balanced lamb shank that has received rave reviews. It perfectly complements her menu of Pakistani appetizers, entrees, drinks, and desserts, including samosas, chana chaat, various curries, tandooris, kebabs, malai kulfi, and so much more. In total, she has over 60 items on her menu at any given time, which is even more impressive when considering the number of people working there.

Though the restaurant is her passion, Sophia is dedicated to bettering herself in every aspect. Having already earned a degree in communication studies, she recently decided to return to school to study political science and support her son in his mission to become a lawyer.

“I want to thank everyone in our community for their incredible support.” Sophia said, “It’s our greatest joy to bring the rich and authentic flavors of Pakistani cuisine to this community through the finest ingredients and traditional recipes. We take pride in serving meals that warm the heart and bring people together. Everyone’s kindness and enthusiasm continue to inspire us daily, and we couldn’t be more grateful to be part of this wonderful community. We look forward to continuing to serve everyone with passion and hospitality for many years to come.”

Drop by Sofi’z, say hello to Sophia, and try her delicious food for yourself. The restaurant is located at 134 Broadway Street in Downtown Chico, and they are open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30am until 8:30pm.

savings you can count on

As an accountant, numbers were one thing Tara Campbell was totally comfortable with. When she saw a house listed as a short sale in 2011, she jumped at the opportunity to purchase it and make it her first home. As anyone who has been through a short sale knows, there’s nothing short about it, and the escrow took six months to close. During that time, squatters had settled in, and once she took possession of the house, it required some significant TLC.

With a dead yard and a home in disrepair, Tara didn’t want to be seen as the neighborhood's blight, so she began checking items off her to-do list as time and money allowed. She cleaned out the home, repainted the interior and exterior, and eventually re-landscaped the yards. The single-story 1,700 square foot home began to take shape, but Tara realized her energy bills were rising. In 2014, after the house was finally the way she wanted it inside and out, she decided to look into a solar energy system.

“I did the math and figured it would pay for itself in a short amount of time.”

Tara said, “Of course, rates change, so I wanted to get enough panels to last through those rate changes. I only had

one big tree out front, so I knew there was enough space to get a good amount of energy from my roof. I did my research and picked two solar companies based on reputation. Sean from Urban Design came out, and I asked him to do the math and show me his work. He showed me everything, and the numbers made sense, so I hired Urban Design to install my solar panels. I’m so happy that I did!”

Sean and his team installed 11 panels on Tara’s roof and ensured she took advantage of the tax credit offered, significantly lowering the cost of her system. “The result was just great.” Tara said, “I’m now long past the point where the system paid for itself. It’s been nice having lower energy bills over the years, and the solar panels now continue to provide energy and savings even after they’ve been paid off.”

In 2020, she added a battery backup to her solar system, allowing her to capture unused energy from her solar panels while also charging the battery during offpeak hours. Unfortunately, she purchased her new Tesla powerwall battery through a different solar company selling doorto-door and was disappointed with the process compared to her prior

experience working with Urban Design. After the installation, she called Urban Design to look over the other company's work and fix everything.

Tara’s experience was so positive that she recommended Urban Design to her mother, Dana. “My parents hadn’t looked at adding solar panels yet, but once I had mine done, I told them that now was the time to do it.” Tara said, “They were at the point where they needed to replace their roof. Sean and his team did it all at once. They paid the entire thing off quickly, and the project was worth it for them too. We’re all considering additional panels to get more from our systems. I would happily work with Urban Design again and plan to do so. I continue to recommend them to others. They were honest, clear, and transparent; they even gave me the details most people don’t ask for. They made it easy despite my not being home and having a dog on the premises. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.”

If you’d like to lower your energy bills, look no further than Urban Design. Visit them at www.UrbanDesignSolar.com or call them at (530) 645-8544 for more information.

Don't just survive—Thrive!

Beth Wasik, MSN, FNP wanted to be a nurse for as long as she could remember.

“My aunt was a nurse practitioner in cardiology in San Francisco. I remember her doing an echocardiogram on my brother who had a heart murmur, and I was just fascinated by it. I’ve been interested in the body and how it worked since childhood, so it wasn’t much of a surprise that I decided to pursue nursing when I grew up.”

During nursing school at Humboldt State University, it became clear that Beth would go on to become a nurse practitioner like her aunt before her. Several teachers encouraged her to make the most of her continuing education and obtain an advanced degree, so she set off to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she earned her MSN/FNP as a family nurse practitioner. She’s been practicing as a nurse practitioner ever since.

Beth works two days a week at Ampla Health. The remaining three business days are spent at her business in Chico,

Thrive Aesthetics, alongside her friend, Jocey Mallinger, RN. The two work closely to provide clients with the best aesthetic care.

“My experience working at Ampla Health augments my practice at Thrive Aesthetics.” Beth explains, “It helps me see what risks someone might have regarding aesthetics. The knowledge is useful when it comes to knowing what medications and supplements people are taking, and whether or not there could be an issue. My husband is a physician, and we chat extensively about patient care, current studies, etc. It helps to determine what information is evidence-based, and I use that when discussing procedures with my clients.”

Beth became interested in aesthetics due to issues she faced with her own selfesteem. Struggling with severe acne, she took Accutane in her 20s, which left her skin blotchy and discolored. She went to see an aesthetic provider who offered her excellent skin care and laser treatments that made her feel like she didn’t need to

hide her skin under layers of makeup. A family friend was practicing in aesthetics, and after shadowing him, she knew it was the perfect fit for her.

“I just found everything about it so joyful!” Beth smiled, “Oftentimes in medicine, you’re working to cure or treat someone, but you’re just alleviating pain. When people leave Thrive Aesthetics, they’re walking out feeling radiant, in an incredible mood, and on top of the world. You really feel like you’re enhancing people’s lives. It’s a uniquely satisfying experience.”

Beth is quick to note that there’s a fine line when it comes to aesthetics, as they can easily be overdone. She says, “The best injectables are undetectable.” The phrase is a driving force behind who she decides to take on as a client.

Beth and Jocey provide various services, including injectable neuromodulators like Jeuveau and Botox, alongside a portfolio of hyaluronic-based fillers like Juvederm by Allergan. If you have stubborn fat under your chin, they offer Kybella to dissolve it. Their Sofwave machine delivers heat energy into the mid-dermis without a laser, denaturing the proteins and causing the body to rebuild collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This provides a non-invasive treatment for people wanting a facelift, necklift, blepharoplasty, or help with acne scars, cellulite, loose or crepe skin.

They are also the only medspa in the area offering PDGF+ by Ariessence. 400 times more potent than PRP, PDGF+ provides human-derived growth factors that stimulate collagen. As a biostimulator, it’s a way to achieve a more natural result than you might see from fillers. Along with medical-grade skin care and micro needling, they have everything you could need to achieve that glow your skin deserves.

Behind The Bar with Melissa Schuster

Hop into one of the comfy leather chairs at the bar inside Burnt Barn Distilling Company and get ready to taste how Paradise’s cool, clear water lends itself to creating one-of-a-kind, locally crafted spirits.

Melissa Schuster beams as she stands behind the bar in the tasting room, whose motif she describes as industrial glam. Hearing her discuss the wonders of the distillation process, you can’t help but be drawn in by her friendly smile and passionate dedication. Melissa opens the door to the operations, and the delicious aroma of bourbon fermentation fills the air. She explains that the stainless steel vats of mash are just finishing up and will enter the stripping run tomorrow. She laughs and says, “We just get so excited about grain and yeast doing their thing!”

Burnt Barn Distilling Co. has been operating since 2024. The company's first batches of Embers to Eden Vodka and Gin are bottled and ready for tasting and purchase, and its rum will soon follow. The first barrels of Burnt Barn Bourbon will be evaluated for release beginning in

April 2026.

Head distiller, Massimiliano “Max” Stecca, joined them in December and is a consultant in the industry, coming up from Southern California. Melissa shares, “He’s such a great fit for us. He’s been in the industry for quite a while and knows it inside and out.” Once Max arrived, they completed their gin, which had already been in progress, and began making more of their smooth-tasting vodka. She pulls a bottle of their vodka from the freezer and explains they wanted to source locally, so they use Lundberg organic rice. This is highlighted in the intricately designed label of Embers to Eden. It features their black distillery barn surrounded by rice plants, the barn’s roots anchoring it to Paradise's community.

That kind of thought and attention can be felt in every piece of this labor of love for Melissa. She says their vodka is some of the best, thanks to local rice, 25 distillation levels, and Paradise water. She explains that her husband Cliff installed a custom water treatment system to

increase the filtration and quality even more. Each bottle of their vodka has only the hearts of the distillation process and that pure Paradise water, resulting in an icy, refreshing, smooth taste.

Melissa wants the community to understand that visiting the Burnt Barn is about the experience. It’s not just tasting their spirits (although they are amazing); it’s about sharing the art behind the craft, its history, and soaking in the beautiful nature surrounding them. She says, “It makes my heart sing to be able to represent Paradise in this way!” She expects the summer to be full of exciting developments for the distillery, including expanded hours, live music, 4th Friday Food Truck nights, and more special events.

The distillery’s Facebook page, Burnt Barn Distilling Co., has the most up-todate information on all the happenings you can expect to find at their location on 195 Wayland Rd in Paradise. Check it out and visit Melissa behind the bar, where she’ll take you on a distillery tour and introduce you to her newfound passion.

The Properties of Platinum The Power of Three

Some businesses are built on strategy, others on luck. But Platinum Partners Real Estate? It was built on grit, passion, and an unshakable commitment to excellence. Lisa Bristow, Marisa Bauer, and Becky Prater didn’t just create another real estate brokerage. They built a movement—one that’s changing the way real estate is done in Chico and beyond.

Three Paths, One Vision

The journey to success looks different for everyone, and it was no exception for Lisa, Marisa, and Becky. Each of them came into real estate for different reasons, but their drive to create something bigger than themselves is what brought them together.

Together, their collective experience in the field spans more than 80 years, Becky being in the business for more than 40 years and Lisa and Marisa for over 20 years each.

Marisa Bauer’s story started most unexpectedly. Fresh out of San Diego State with degrees in business and finance, she had her sights set on hotel management or finance in San Francisco. Searching for jobs in the want-ads of a local newspaper, she saw a listing for a real estate assistant and clearly remembers circling it as she rode BART around the city. Something about it called to her. Nine months later, at just 24 years old, she became a licensed agent—

and that was it. She had found her calling.

Lisa Bristow was thriving in corporate event planning at Canyon Oaks, but deep down, she knew she wanted more. "I was planning golf tournaments and events, and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t see it as something I wanted to do forever. I wanted to build something for myself, to have control over my own success," she says. A friend suggested real estate, and the idea stuck. She took the leap—and never looked back.

Becky Prater laughs when she looks back at her start in real estate. Studying fashion merchandising at Butte College, she quickly realized she didn’t like the ‘broke college

student’ lifestyle. Someone pointed out she was a natural at selling, and she asked herself, "What’s the most expensive thing I could sell?" The answer? Houses. At just 19, she got her license, found a mentor, and hit the ground running. "Real estate has been my life calling," she says. "I love the hospitality aspect of it—taking care of people and making their dreams happen."

Building a Business, Building a Legacy

Lisa and Marisa worked together at another brokerage for 13 years, developing their own way of doing things— one that prioritized relationships over transactions and personalized service over volume. Becky, running her own brokerage, was searching for a more collaborative environment. The three women had long respected each other’s work, and in 2024, they took the leap together to create Platinum Partners Real Estate.

"We each bring different experiences and perspectives to the table, but the common thread is our belief in doing real estate the right way—by putting people first," Becky says. "We aren’t just here to close deals. We’re here to serve."

Their business is always evolving and adjusting to the fluctuations in the market and the real estate industry as a whole. Throughout these developments, Becky explains that they continue to educate clients and agents in order to help them successfully navigate the changes.

Real Estate, The Platinum Way

Platinum Partners isn’t just about transactions—it’s about making the process seamless, stress-free, and even enjoyable. "Our ultimate goal is to make everything as smooth and amazing for the client as possible. We don’t just help people find houses—we help them create homes, build wealth, and establish their future," Marisa explains. "And we don’t disappear after the deal is done. We want to be your lifelong real estate resource."

Lisa adds, "Our job doesn’t end when the keys change hands. We’re here to guide our clients every step of the way. Whether it’s finding a contractor, a plumber, or even a dog sitter—we’ve got them covered. We’re a full-service concierge brokerage."

Empowering Agents to Build Their Own Success Stories

Beyond their clients, Lisa, Marisa, and Becky are passionate about helping agents grow. "We’ve all been there—starting from scratch, trying to figure it all out," Lisa says. They’re helping agents grow their business from the beginning stages to a full-fledged career that fully supports themselves and their families. One of their favorite stories involves a new agent who had been renting an apartment with her fiancé and three children and never thought she’d be able to purchase a home at that time. After a while with Platinum Partners, she found a promising listing that needed some work, but the idea of making such a big investment for the first time was intimidating. Her mentors at Platinum Partners Real Estate encouraged her to take

advantage of the opportunity and supported her throughout the process. That first home changed her life. She has since turned it into an investment property and then bought a larger home as her career has continued to soar. It’s stories like these that drive Platinum Partners Real Estate. “There’s nothing more rewarding than watching someone realize their own potential."

Platinum Partners is always looking for likeminded, hardworking agents who want to

build a career, not just sell houses. "We’re big enough to offer incredible resources but small enough to give every agent the mentorship and personal attention they need to succeed," Lisa explains.

More Than a Boutique Brokerage— A Real Estate Powerhouse

Platinum Partners’ services extend beyond Chico and their market share around the North State continues to grow. Their boutique brokerage isn’t just a name—it’s a

testament to their hard work, expertise, and relentless dedication to their clients and agents.

Platinum Partners Real Estate handles not only residential sales but also commercial sales, leases, and property management. Whether you’re investing, relocating, or need real estate advice, Lisa, Marisa, and Becky are ready to help. Visit them online at www.PlatinumPartnersRealEstate.com or call (530) 228-2550

Standing tall & Staying active

Judy Donohue remembers San Jose as a bustling city throughout her childhood, and her high school was no less busy. At a towering 5’10, she stood out among the other girls in her freshman class. During a big assembly in the gym, she saw a boy in the stands. “He was the tallest one there.” Judy remembers, “I went home and told my mother, ‘I found the man I’m going to marry.’” Leon’s height was a good starting point for the two, especially since Judy was taller as a freshman than most of the boys in the senior class. The pair started dating and were eventually married shortly after high school.

Judy began working at the Crocker National Bank, and Leon was drafted into the NFL as an offensive guard for the

San Francisco 49ers. The two had their first child, Carrie, and Judy decided to stay home to raise her, eventually giving birth to their other two daughters, Linda and Janet. “It was a good living.” Judy remembers, “Leon was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, so we kept a house in the San Jose area and traveled back and forth with the kids. After retiring from the NFL, he returned to San Jose State and earned his degree. He got a job teaching and coaching football at Shasta College, so we moved up to Redding, and I raised our three girls there.”

All three of their daughters went on to college, married, and had children of their own. “In total, if my memory doesn’t fail me,” Judy smiles, “I now have three

daughters, eight grandchildren, a greatgrandson, and just received news that another great-grandson is on the way!”

After her daughters left home, Judy worked as a classroom aide in Redding before assisting at its juvenile hall to give kids the support they needed. “I loved that experience.” She says, “I was there for a couple of years, and we created a safe place for the kids to receive focused care and engage in something meaningful. We continued living in Redding, and I sold our place on the river after Leon passed. I moved to Rocklin to be closer to family, but didn’t feel like I was keeping busy enough. The girls didn’t think so either, so I asked them to look at various senior living communities, and that’s how we found Westmont of Chico.”

After doing their research, Judy’s daughters decided Westmont of Chico would be the ideal community for her. With Carrie and her family in Chico, they would never be more than a short drive apart. She moved into her one-bedroom apartment on January 31, 2023, and has loved the experience ever since.

“Everyone keeps me pretty busy here!” Judy laughs, “I go on a lot of walks, we have wine tastings each month, and we take trips often—whether for sightseeing or shopping. Sometimes, I have to hide away in my bedroom because there are so many activities going on! I have a beautiful view of the lake from my room, and they do a really good job with the food and offer quite a variety of menu items. I honestly think this place has kept me going and busy. I could just sit and watch TV at home, but I truly enjoy the other people here, and we’re constantly inviting each other out to do something. I’ve made several friends here, and it’s very welcoming. Plus, I get to see my daughter Carrie and her husband often. They pick me up a lot to go shopping together. I would recommend this community to any senior looking for a place to stay active that feels like home.”

Providing peace of mind

Dana Campbell was a CPA for 35 years, working in public and private accounting, and eventually as a CFO for nonprofits. After serving as a juror, she fell in love with the law and decided to go to law school at the age of 54. She graduated from Cal Northern School of Law’s fouryear evening program, passed the bar exam, and became an attorney in 2017 at Tyree & Campbell, LLP.

When Cheryl Tyree decided to retire, Dana reached out to her daughter Tara, also an accountant and CFO of a nonprofit in Chico, encouraging her to practice law as well. After nearly 20 years in accounting, Tara began attending Cal Northern School of Law remotely during the pandemic and joined Dana’s office as a legal assistant. Tara graduated in May of 2024, passed the bar exam in July, and was sworn in as an attorney this February. She is now an Associate Attorney in Dana’s law office, and one half of the mother-daughter team.

As longtime accountants with non-profit backgrounds prior to practicing law, Dana and Tara have a bit of a different take on things. “We’ve done a lot of disaster relief work.” Tara says, “We got through the Oroville Dam disaster, Camp Fire, COVID, and Dixie Fire. It was exhausting,

but we both developed a strong sense of empathy working in the nonprofit world. We bring a legal and financial perspective to everything we do.”

Dana and Tara provide estate planning, trust administration, probate, conservatorship, and special needs trusts. Only 35% of people have ever considered an estate plan, but 95% of people should have one. Dana says, “As we get older, our needs change, but there are boxes you should check at each stage. In your 20s, you should have a power of attorney designated, as we tend to live more dangerously during those years. In our 30s, we should create a will so matters of guardianship of our children and finances are properly spelled out in the event of an accident. As soon as you buy your first property, you should create a trust, as the threshold for probate in California is under $200,000, with very limited exceptions. All of these things make the administration of your estate much easier in the event of an accident or passing.”

“There are so many little-known opportunities out there, and having started on the financial side, we love being able to surprise clients with them in our law offices.” Tara says, “It used to be that the only way Medi-Cal paid for

skilled nursing was if you had less than $2,000 in assets. Now, you can own property and become qualified if you’re over 55 years of age. Medi-Cal will pick up around $14,000 per month of skilled nursing care if you get your estate set up properly in a trust. Any funds you have locked up in a trust can help supplement your needs, and when you pass, your beneficiaries get what remains instead of the state. We want to make sure people hold onto their estate and pass it on, and we want to work with them before they’re in a position of desperation. There’s so much more you can do if you plan early. We can even help create trusts for those with special needs to ensure they’re taken care of when their conservator or guardian passes away.”

Dana and Tara also provide education. Together, they teach Estate Planning 101 in the fall and Estate and Trust Administration in the spring as volunteer instructors through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Chico State, making their knowledge accessible to all.

If you need a will, trust, or even just advice, visit www.DanaCampbellLaw.com or call (530) 894-2100 to schedule an appointment and discover peace of mind today.

Turning Softness into Power

Tucked into the corner of the Almond Orchard Shopping Center in Chico is a place that feels like stepping into your most fabulous daydream—Sultry Silhouette Boutique & Studios. Here, lingerie shopping is fun, bras finally fit how they’re meant to, and boudoir photography becomes a full-on celebration of you.

At the heart of it all is Kylie Jungling, a devoted wife, mother, photographer, and avid book lover. Radiant, authentic, and refreshingly relatable, Kylie has created something truly unique: an experience designed to honor every woman’s individuality, confidence, and beauty with a thoughtful blend of style, support, and self-love woven into every detail.

Sultry Silhouette is more than just a boutique; it’s the realization of passion and purpose. What began as a personal journey to find deeper meaning and growth has transformed into a space that uplifts and empowers women from all over Butte County and the Bay Area. “I didn’t grow up dreaming of this,” Kylie admits. “It isn’t an ‘I’ve been doing this my whole life’ story. It came about because I was searching for that thing that made me want to grow as a person and make others feel empowered.

The boutique side of Sultry Silhouette is a vibe all its own—think tasteful, luxe, feminine, and completely non-intimidating. Kylie and her team offer personalized bra fittings (because, let’s be honest, we’ve all been wearing the wrong size) and style guidance that’s empowering, not awkward. The pieces she stocks are curated with you in mind—size-inclusive, quality-driven, and perfect whether you’re prepping for a shoot or just want to feel good under your clothes.

Plus, Sultry Silhouette isn’t just about shopping; it’s a community. From stained glass workshops to girls’ night pop-ups and body positivity events, Kylie always creates ways to connect, uplift, and celebrate local women.

The boudoir experience at Sultry Silhouette is anything but cookie-cutter. Kylie starts with a phone call—yes, even if you hate them—because she believes connection matters. “Boudoir shouldn’t feel like you’re just another body in a room,” she says. “You should enjoy the whole process. You should feel seen.”

Once booked, you’ll receive prep emails, a custom questionnaire, and an exclusive 25% off shopping appointment in the boutique to select your outfits. On session day, the studio is all yours. Hair and makeup? Included. Nervous giggles? Totally normal. Kylie’s been there, and she’ll guide you through every pose with her signature mix of humor, grace, and energy.

You’ll laugh, you might tear up, and you’ll definitely leave feeling like the most radiant version of yourself. And within just a few days, you’ll return for The Reveal—your own private viewing where you’ll relive the magic, choose your favorites, and see yourself through a new lens (literally).

What Kylie has built is more than a boutique and more than a studio—it’s a place where women come to remember who they are, where vulnerability turns into strength, and softness becomes power.

So whether you’re looking for the perfect lace bralette, your confidence boost moment, or just want to experience some serious self-love, Sultry Silhouette is waiting—with bubbly in hand and Kylie ready to cheer you on every step of the way. Art Festival Season

May, named after Maia, an ancient Roman goddess of springtime, warmth, and growth, is the month of two celebratory art events that will lift your spirits. The spectacular Chico Art Festival, now in its twelfth year, features over 50 artists plus performances, including classical guitar, jazz, ballet folklorico, fire dancing, demos, art for kids, taco trucks, and a margarita bar. It runs Friday, May 9, from 4-8pm and Saturday, May 10, from 10am-4pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church, located at 2341 Floral Avenue in Chico.

In the more intimate “Wild Bunch” show (now in its fourth year), you’ll discover 20 artists tucked into nooks and crannies of a straw-bale house and wrap-around garden. There will be a mother and daughter mellow music duo and soup simmering on a stovetop at 2414 Irene Street, from 10am-4pm, Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18.

Both shows suit Upgraded Living’s theme for May of “Women in Business.”

They also demonstrate how men and women can collaborate to build a strong art community. You may not often think of artists as entrepreneurs, but like other small business owners, they buy supplies, create and promote inventories, keep records, and pay taxes. The Chico Art Festival team gives local artists a showcase by renting the venue, tents, and mobile bathrooms, buying spot announcements, stocking the bar, hiring security, and much more. On a smaller scale, in hosting The Wild Bunch show, Maggie Dietz draws upon her experience running Maddy’s in Downtown Chico, where she sold her hand-fashioned clothing.

You can plan your visit to the Chico Art Festival by using the ChiVAA.org (Chico Visual Arts Alliance) website. Searching for a Mother’s Day gift? Try browsing through photos of paintings, sculptures, prints, jewelry, and wearables by festival artists. For example, a ceramist, Katie Shrank, specializes in vividly colored,

wheel-thrown marbleware. You'll also find a performance and demo schedule on the website, including a plein air painting competition that lets you watch artists paint St. John's Episcopal Church and its parklike setting. There are spinning and weaving demos by the Mt. Lassen Fiber Guild, and jeweler Marion HunzikerLarsen will show how to assemble bracelets.

Marion Hunziker-Larsen, though trained as a silversmith, creates jewelry using cord, thread, gemstones, and glass beads. Her fiber techniques include micro macramé and Cavadoli knotting, double half-hitching, kumihimo, braiding, cord making, and bead crochet. Some pieces take many hours to design and create, while others contain only five to ten knots, a zen statement, much like a haiku. In 2006, Marion launched an online supply business offering cord, thread, and fiber jewelry kits. Throughout her journey, she has received unwavering support from her husband, Nicolai Larsen, who is a painter.

Marion will demonstrate her technique for creating Turkish bead crochet bracelets during this year's festival. Visitors can select the beads, a cord color, and a metal button, and watch her create bracelets to fit their wrists.

The secluded oasis of St. John’s is a perfect place for individuals and families to relax and recharge. In addition to art displays, there's a playground, an orchard, and a labyrinth to explore, and picnic tables shaded by old-growth trees for lunch or dinner breaks.

On Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, you can visit the “Wild Bunch” show. Maggie Dietz, its organizer, welcomes visitors with open arms into her strawbale house, studio, and garden that she co-designed to suit her needs as a clay artist and clothing maker. “Skip the garage,” she told her architect, “and build me a studio large enough for a kiln, industrial sewing machines, and worktables for a dozen people.” Maggie’s artistic family and friends, including professional artists and teachers, occupy those work tables on “Clay Tuesdays." They form the core of the “Wild Bunch” and share Maggie’s need to keep making

things.

The show is small enough so as not to tire you and large enough to pack plenty of surprises that’ll get you thinking about how to enliven your own home and garden. In addition to art by the Wild Bunch, you can get ideas from how Maggie has decorated her walls with an eclectic mix of watercolors and oils, family photographs, and souvenirs from her travels.

I’ve fallen in love with Maggie’s L-shaped garden. As a novice cultivator, it embodies what I hope for in my garden— that it will survive, thrive, and amuse me. It seems larger than its modest size because of eye-catching surprises—a sculpted dog you’ll want to pet, a gazebo, and a fairytale cottage. Imagine sitting in a wicker chair under a mirror that Maggie’s late husband framed with metal equipment he salvaged from the family business, Longfellow’s Lumber, as sounds of LeAnn and Lydia Cooley singing and strumming guitars come from the nearby patio. You can stop by the gazebo, where I’ll display my paintings, to pick up a free treasure map I’ve drawn of the garden’s delights.

Many of the exhibitors' works of art are inspired by nature's beauty and complexity. Eva Farley will display acrylics of her garden’s produce, and Katherine Dietz’s ornamental glass windows will add year-round color to gardens.

Yvonne Anderson says, “In college, I studied biology and anatomy, and became very interested in bones, which I would take home and draw. Size makes no difference in my style, whether I am working on a twenty-foot-high sculpture or a ring—they'll both have been inspired by nature.” Yvonne’s husband, professional photographer Ron Schwager, brings out the glowing, natural colors and sinuous curves of Yvonne's jewelry.

Why choose between these May exhibits when visiting both will immerse you in double the positive energy? This May, seize the chance to leave your accustomed environment behind for a complete change of scenery without the expense and hassle of travel by car, train, or plane.

Jenn Salisbury always felt there was something more for her than her nine-tofive job in insurance. Not feeling fulfilled, she told her ever-supportive husband, Wes, she wanted something else. Together, they bought and reopened Lassen Steakhouse in January 2022 with a new take on an old classic. They quickly grew the business, but decided early on to split the responsibilities to ensure they never ended up stepping on each other's toes. Ava Schmidt | Buoyant Primary Care

Ava Schmidt graduated from Chico State and began her nursing career in 1989. Over the following 25 years, she worked in all the area hospitals before retiring in 2014 and beginning humanitarian work with the Red Cross. During that time, she realized she had more to do in healthcare, so she returned to school, becoming a nurse practitioner in 2018. In November 2022, she partnered with Dr. Burgess to open Buoyant Primary Care. Without the volume pressure that many private practices have, she strives to dedicate half an hour to each patient, giving them the time they need to be properly seen and cared for. She takes private insurance, and as a family care provider, sees patients ages 12+. Beyond primary care, Buoyant also offers weight-loss services, including meal plans, weigh-in schedules, and weight-loss medications when safe and appropriate. True Team Players

Walking into the office, I’m greeted with a friendly, “Hello.” I instantly feel at ease. It’s not hectic or impersonal; it’s like they’re welcoming me into their family. A company is only as successful as its team, and Culligan of Chico is the perfect example. Meeting with the company's women, each one reiterates that the supportive nature of the entire company, both internally and in its support of the community they serve, sets Culligan apart.

Marianne White has been with the Culligan team since 2012 and handles the company’s accounts receivable department. She’s lived in Chico for almost 50 years, where her children and grandchildren were born. She appreciates Culligan’s customers and how she’s really come to know them over the years. They become part of the Culligan family.

Jacklyn Farrel joined the team in 2021 to help her husband, Clay, as he and his partner, William Bocast, purchased the franchise. She says she was happy to come in and assist in the office through the transition. As the office manager, she

continues to be an integral part of the business.

Jenn Moore is the newest addition and is in charge of coordinating the service crews installing and maintaining water softeners in homes and businesses across Butte County.

Finding a balance between work and family can be challenging, and each of these women addresses it in their own way. Jacklyn laughs and says, “You know I calendar. I just finished our paper calendar and will transfer it to everybody’s Google.” She shares that balancing isn't easy with four kids ranging in age from 9 to 18, and her husband owning a business.

Marianne says that now that her children are grown, she focuses on making time for her grandkids. “They’re getting older and out and about in their lives, but when they spend time with grandma, that’s great.”

Jenn explains that one of the reasons she was drawn to work at Culligan was their

focus on family. “I knew they were very family-friendly and very family-oriented.” Everyone is exceptionally supportive regarding scheduling time for field trips or unexpected sick days. Jenn says that before working at Culligan, she had no idea how important water quality was and how much of a difference good water can make in people’s lives. “It’s been very rewarding to work for a company that provides such a cool service.”

Jacklyn explains that they care a lot about their team and their customers. William and Clay had always wanted to own their own company, where they could create an atmosphere and a work environment where people wanted to come to work and help clients. The positive group dynamic they’ve created is evident.

If you’re looking for clean and pure water from a company that cares for its team and community, look no further than Culligan of Chico. Visit them online at www.culliganofchico.com, stop by their office at 2377 Ivy Street in Chico, or call (530) 343-5100, and see what the Culligan team can do for you.

At Privvy Modern Health, they’re all about helping you feel confident, refreshed, and glowing from the inside out.

Let’s get one thing straight: they’re not your typical med spa. At Privvy, they’ve raised the bar. There are no generic “injectors” there, only MDs, licensed medical providers, and registered nurses who are experts in their technique. That means every injectable, laser session, and treatment is performed with skill, precision, and actual medical knowledge. You’re in the best hands possible, and it shows in your level of care and on your face!

So, what can they do for you? The better question is what can’t they do, and all without making you look “done” or overdone. Whether you’re looking to smooth out fine lines with injectables like Botox or Dysport, restore volume with dermal fillers, or smooth and resurface skin texture and tone with lasers, they’ve got you covered. Think of it as subtle, little tweaks that make a big impact—refreshed, not frozen.

Their clients love their natural approach to Botox and Dysport. These powerhouse neuromodulators relax those expression lines (think forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet) so you look rested and relaxed, not like you’ve had “work done.” And if you want to keep everyone guessing, they promise your secret is safe with them.

Have you recently lost weight or are you starting to notice some loss of facial volume that accompanies aging? Want a little extra contour or fullness? Their hyaluronic acid-based fillers are perfect for adding volume where you want it most, like cheeks, lips, jawline, and more. They’re all about balance and harmony, not exaggerated or puffy results.

And don’t even get us started on their Cutera laser treatments. From allover hair removal to sunspots, pigmentation, acne scars, dullness, and uneven texture, their lasers are like a magic wand for your skin. They stimulate collagen, smooth out imperfections, and leave you with that litfrom-within glow that screams, “I woke up like this.”

What makes Privvy the place to go in Chico and beyond? It’s the perfect mix of top-tier expertise, personalized care, and a modern, welcoming vibe that’s totally focused on you. An Adventure in Downtown Chico

Walking into The Peddler’s Closet, you’ll immediately understand this isn’t your average boutique. Leann Powell has pulled from her childhood memories of road trips along the coast, her love of camping, and the quirky vibes she encounters along the way. The manzanita tree in the center of the store should probably be your first hint that this is a different kind of space. The tree symbolizes resilience and rebirth as it thrives in harsh environments. Once you know Leann’s story, you’ll understand why it is a fitting focal point for her store.

Our past experiences shape our lives, but don’t necessarily determine our path. Instead, our reactions to those experiences shift our life’s direction.

Leann didn’t easily fall into where she is today; she fought and overcame many challenges. As a teenager, she tragically lost her little brother in a drowning accident, and then two years later her father passed away in a car accident. She says, “You can go through hard things, you can be depressed, and you can struggle, but ultimately you have to decide on what you’re going to do with your life. You can take those really hard, awful experiences, push forward, and use them to help make you a better person

down the road.” She shares that after struggling with depression and darkness for three years, she shifted her focus towards her Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and it made all the difference.

Shortly thereafter, she met her husband, Kirk Powell. While attending Chico State, they started a janitorial company, bought their first home, and went on to have three children: Cherstyn, Ethan, and Annika.

She opened The Peddler’s Closet in 2019, selling artisanal tie-dye clothing from the back of her 1974 VW Thing. What started with a handshake deep in the redwoods for her first batch of inventory expanded into a brick-and-mortar store in 2020. Leann says her husband Kirk encouraged her to move from the mobile pop-up shops to her own space and has been super supportive throughout her journey.

This April, she celebrated a year at her newest location, 127 Main Street in Downtown Chico. The entrance to the shop doesn’t hint at what customers will find on the inside. Leann shares, “It’s like an adventure!” There’s a baby grand piano in the middle of the store where musicians and customers will stop in and play. The walls are decorated

with vintage items, family heirlooms full of history, and fun quirky pieces that draw the eye around the store. Leann loves collaborating with and promoting other area businesses as they build up Downtown Chico, like the classroom she started with Davin from Needham’s Stained Glass. And she often has something to snack on as you browse, from fresh sourdough bread to appetizers from nearby Meze Moon.

Shopping at The Peddler’s Closet is never dull. Leann works hard to find one-of-akind, funky, and unique items she knows her customers will love. She scours shops, trade shows, second-hand stores, and estate sales for ideas. Whether it’s jewelry from a local artisan like Designs by Jennie 17, mixed media art from Judy Abbott, hats by Brimmed Beauties, or eclectic pottery pieces from Petaluma, CA, Leann says, “I just love hunting for treasures!”

Consistency, quality, and a better profit mArgin

If you want to run a successful restaurant, three things outrank everything else: offering stellar customer service, providing consistent quality, and making a decent profit. Simran Kaur was tasked with ensuring all three for several Wingstop locations throughout Northern California. As their district manager, the success of each location is directly tied to her choices, and she devotes significant time to finding vendors who save the restaurants time and money. She found this and more when she decided to hire Filta of Norcal to make her Wingstop locations more efficient and profitable.

While in high school, Sim began working at the Yuba City Wingstop and worked her way up through each position. The restaurant’s owner recognized her hard work and promoted her to general manager and later district manager, overseeing seven of his Wingstop franchise locations from Lodi to Redding.

“As a district manager, every day is different, and there’s always something new that needs to be taken care of.”

Sim said, “After the pandemic, staffing became an issue throughout the restaurant industry, and we felt that stress at our restaurants too. Restaurants are only as strong as the staff they have, so I’ve always tried to hire the best teams

possible, but during busy times, staffing can still be an issue. We look to vendors to try to alleviate some of the more time-consuming tasks so our employees can focus on the work only they can do. That’s how I ran across Tim Whipple at Filta of Norcal.”

Filta of Norcal offers commercial cleaning and fryer oil filtration services that save restaurants time and money. Tim visited the Yuba City Wingstop location and spoke with them about how he could extend the life of their fryer oil while lowering their liability exposure. Fryer oil has to be changed relatively often to maintain quality and effectiveness, and hot oil can be a significant liability for restaurants. Filta of Norcal filters the fryer oil at temperature, often doubling its lifespan, thereby saving the restaurant money. They also recycle the oil when it's no longer useful, creating a safer work environment for employees and lowering risk to restaurant owners.

“I talked with my boss about Filta’s services, and we decided to give them a trial run at our Yuba City location.” Sim said, “We were impressed, and Tim did exactly what he said he could do. His services benefitted our Yuba City location and cut many of our daily tasks, so we added their service to our other locations

after the trial run. Tim was honestly offering quite a bit. At first, it was just fryer cleaning and filtration, but then we added his cleaning services. I feel like he’s always trying to find ways to help us out and make our job easier.”

Tim and his team at Filta of Norcal clean the fryers at Sim’s Wingstop locations, filter the oil, recycle it, and clean the kitchen, saving them considerable time and money while eliminating many of their safety risks.

“Honestly, there are a lot of positives working with Tim and his team.” Sim said, “The quality of our food is even better, we have shorter wait times, and we’ve seen a better profit margin at our locations. Tim has been super responsive whenever we've reached out—he’s our most responsive vendor. After 2020, customer service went downhill with vendors, but not with him. He responds within 30-60 minutes when I leave him a message, and he handles everything thoughtfully. I would 100% recommend Tim and Filta to any restaurant, and I do often.”

Patricia A. Savage, Esq. | ADR North

We’ve all had disagreements, but going to court over them can be daunting. That’s where ADR North comes in. ADR stands for Alternative Dispute Resolution. Alternative Dispute Resolution encompasses arbitration and mediation, two ways to avoid endless fighting and big expenses in civil court. Patricia says, “Mediation is a non-binding opportunity for two individuals to resolve a disagreement in one day instead of over a period of years. It is faster, less expensive, and less emotionally and psychologically destructive. Whether it’s a civil dispute involving your business, trust, employment, or property issues, hiring a mediator is well worth your time. ADR North, like other mediation centers, offers people the power to control the outcome of their disagreements, maintain relationships, and often, reach more successful outcomes. As a mediator, I help people understand their case, their strengths and weaknesses, and work towards a resolution that saves time and money.”

Originally from Magalia, Jessica met her husband, Phillip, who worked at Nobby’s in Chico. He dreamed of owning a restaurant, so the two purchased Nobby’s and began working together. Since taking over, they’ve added new burgers to the menu and considerably improved the outdoor dining experience. Having been customers of the Cheesesteak Shop in Chico since it opened, the two jumped at the chance to buy it and expand their growing restaurant empire in 2024. They’ve since remodeled the interior and are excited to complete their first full year as its owners. “Everyone should have experience in the restaurant industry.” Jessica says, “What you see is so different from what goes on behind the scenes. A lot of time and care goes into the food being served, and owning a restaurant opened my eyes to that. We couldn’t be more thankful to our customers who have continued supporting both restaurants. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without them!”
