ADOZEN independent Somerset businesses have joined forces to come up with a bare-faced plan for a bit of extra exposurequite literally.
Business owners in Shepton Mallet have come together to raise money for a town cause - by posing for a 2026 calendar, almost naked.
Funds raised through the initiative will raise funds for the Shepton Community Fridge. A launch party for the calendar will take place at Bar 501 on Wednesday, December 3, from 6pm.
"The idea for the Shepton Mallet Bare Business calendar came about when one of the organisers were in discussion with the local Economic Regeneration Group about how to promote local independent businesses," a spokesperson for the Shepton Mallet Bare Business calendar said.
"Following some community WhatsApp messages and door-knocking, 12 businesses stepped up to brave the camera and the cold."
The calendar will be sold for £10 and was produced in just three weeks - from idea to physical calendars - with photography by Dan Simon and
Kayse Corney.
From each sale, £2 will go to the Shepton Community Fridge. Calendars can only be purchased from participating retailers in Shepton Mallet, available from tomorrow (November 28), while stocks last.
The calendar can be bought from:
n Dredge and Male (10 High Street)
n Junk & Disorderly (1 Great Ostry)
n The Shepton Cobbler (49 High Street)
n Bar 501 (2 Market Place)
n The Black Thistle (10 Market Place)
n The Little Farm Shed (9 Market Place)
n Minsky’s (3 Commercial Road)
n Lethal Postmen Vintage (16 Town Street)
n Phillips Tyres Shepton Mallet (5 Paul Street)
n Shepton Artists (8 Town Street)
n The Artistry (37 Town Street)
"2025 has been a tough year for many on the High Street, in Shepton and all over the country, so we thought we’d see out the year with a bit of cheer, get some visibility for our incredible independent business
scene, and raise a bit of cash for the lovely, hardworking people at the Shepton Community Fridge, a volunteer-run project that distributes surplus food to households in need," the
spokesperson added.
"An enormous thank-you to our brave and wonderful participating businesses who took on the camera and the cold to make this happen."

MONTHS of roadworks are planned on two busy Somerset routes – to replace 30-year-old traffic lights.
The signals on the A39, at the junction with the A396 at Dunster, will get underway in the new year, Somerset Council said, as the lights are “at the end of their working life”.
Work is set to begin on January 5, but won’t be completed until April, the council said.
Meanwhile, in Street, lights on the A39 junction with Clarks Village also starting on January 5 and run until May.
A spokesperson said an “intelligent temporary traffic lights system” will be installed during the work, mirroring the current lights in a bid to minimise disruption.
Replacing the lights would require “significant excavation” to replace old ducting and wiring, as well as the traffic light heads.
Lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “This is a busy junction, and we are pleased to see this vital work taking place, replacing end of life equipment and ensuring the signals are fit for purpose years to come.
“We are aware there will be disruption at peak traffic times and during school drop-offs and pick-ups. The team will be working hard to minimise this.”
Residents and businesses can ask questions and find out more during a drop-in event at Dunster Tithe Barn on Wednesday, December 10, from 3.30pm to 7pm.
In Street, a drop-in will run at Clarks Village Conference Centre on Tuesday, December 9, from 3.30pm to 7pm.

MORE than 80 homes could be created at part of the County Hall complex in Taunton.
A plan has been submitted to Somerset Council by Prime (UK) Developments Limited to change the use of Block C of County Hall into “key worker housing”.
The eight-storey building, on a site of 0.25 hectares on The Crescent and Upper High Street, was built in the 60s and 70s and was sold off by the council in March this year.
Neighbouring Block B continues to be used as council offices, but Prime Developments wants to convert Block C into 82 apartments “primarily” for occupation by NHS staff from nearby Musgrove Park Hospital.
The development would feature 42 one-bed one-person apartments, 17 one-bed twoperson apartments, two twobedroom apartments and 21 “premium studios” to accommodate “those who have just graduated or are looking for a more affordable housing option”.
“The provision of the studios is essential for meeting the needs of the key workers in the local area,” the application said, with the studio apartments
having an average floor area of around 25sqm.
New stair and lift access would be created as part of the work, with alterations to the exterior appearance of the building.
“The landscaped area to the south of the building will be enhanced to provide a shared amenity space for occupiers,” the application went on.
“Land within the control of the application will also be subject to landscape enhancements which include a perimeter hedgerow, tree planting and improving the grassed area with a meadow mixture.”
Somerset Council will now consider the application.
When the property was sold Will Bilbrough, technical development director at Prime, said: “On previous projects we have seen first-hand how having access to holistically designed accommodation can transform the experience of key workers, improving their wellbeing and supporting them to stay with employers longer.
“We are excited to get started on redeveloping C Block, County Hall, giving it a second life as an asset to the local community.”

And Cllr Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s lead member for strategic asset management, said: “We are very pleased to see this sale completed. When Somerset Council was formed in 2023, we committed to reviewing our estate and making the right decisions, including selling buildings that were no longer required, to generate income that will play a part in protecting vital services for residents."
He added: “Providing accommodation to our county’s keyworkers is also a great opportunity and we look forward to seeing these plans progress.”

AMAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an incident in Wincanton that has left the victim facing "potentially life-changing" injuries.
Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA) has launched its 2ndHeli Appeal, to raise the final £1 million needed to buy and equip a second helicopter for the people of Dorset and Somerset.
The incident unfolded at around 9.28am this morning (November 30), when police were called to reports of an assault in the High Street.
Emergency services attended and the victim, a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with injuries described as "potentially life-changing, but not life-threatening".
DSAA’s current helicopter, ‘Peggy’, is flown more intensively than almost any other air ambulance of its kind in the UK. However, the charity recognises that approximately 10% more patients require their specialist skills during their 19-hour day but cannot be reached due to aircraft unavailability. Furthermore, there is currently no pre-hospital critical care across the two counties between the hours of 02:00 and 07:00.
Lancey said: "This incident is understandably concerning but we do believe it to be one that involved people known to each other and there is not believed to be any risk to the wider public.
"Our investigation is well underway and a man was arrested earlier this afternoon while we continue to pursue all lines of enquiry.
"Officers will be carrying out increase high visibility patrols in the area over the coming days and if you have any concerns then please do speak to them.
With careful stewardship of funds and some generous legacies, DSAA is now putting those gifts to work by allocating £30 million from its reserves towards the second helicopter, redevelopment of an operational base and key modernisation projects. These commitments will also ensure the charity is able to retain financial security while preparing for potential 24-hour operations in future.
A police cordon was put in place to allow investigations to take place.
A 33-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.
The amounts designated from reserves are not expected to cover the full costs of these developments and the charity will continue to rely on the incredible support of the local community, who fund the life-saving service.
"If you witnessed the incident and have not yet spoken to an officer or you have any information you feel could be relevant to the investigation please contact us."

A GROUP campaigning to save the Britannia Inn in Wells held its first stall in Wells market on November 26 to promote their second share offer.
The East Wells Community Benefit Society (EWCBS) is hoping to raise enough funds through the purchase of community shares in order to buy and refurbish the building and reopen it as a pub.
A first share offer raised more than £76,000, with a second offer running until January 2.
The group will be promoting the campaign again on Saturday at the Christmas market, on Cathedral Green, and at Wednesday markets. Visit savethebritanniainnwells.org.
YOUNG farmers will once again roll up for an annual illuminated tractor run.

Starting out from Worthy Farm, Pilton, at 4.30pm, a parade of dozens of tractors will shine through Shepton Mallet, Wells, Glastonbury and surrounding villages.
They will be collecting for St Margaret’s Hospice and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance as they go.
The procession will include Pilton, Shepton Mallet, Croscombe , Dulcote, Wells, Coxley, Polsham, Glastonbury, and West Pennard.
AS one door closes –another one opens…
And that is quite literally true in Burnham-onSea, as the town bids farewell to its longest-serving shop, while welcoming a new tenant.
GW Hurley Newsagents, in the High Street, closed on Saturday (November 29) after more than a century serving and delivering news to residents.
Owners Colin and Monika Morris handed back their paper bags, with former paperboy Colin having been at the helm of the store for more than five decades.
His grandparents opened the shop in 1919 and Colin is the third generation to take over.
But he said the changing marketplace had made it more difficult in recent years and the couple had taken the decision to step back.
After settling on the decision, Colin and Monika reached out to town charity, In Charley’s Memory (ICM), which was facing being homeless after

being served an eviction notice from its Highbridge base.
A Crowdfunder has raised thousands to support the charity – which provides mental health care to young people across the county and beyond – as it sought a new home.
But now, the two parties have agreed a 15-year lease – giving the charity security for many years to come.
Dawn Carey, CEO of ICM, said: “I want to personally thank Monika and Colin for their

support and determination to provide ICM a home in what is a very important building to them, and to the history of our High Street.
“Thank you to every single member of our community who has donated to our appeal so far or has reached out to offer us support. There are too many to mention individually, but please know how much it is appreciated by our team, clients and the wider community.

ANEW Lidl store will open in Bridgwater tomorrow (Thursday, December 4).
The branch, part of the Bridgwater Gateway site, off Taunton Road, will welcome customers from 8am.
Grand opening celebrations will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Dave Creedy, president of the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival.
And early visitors can also take advantage of free food sampling – with some special prizes up for grabs.
Shoppers can then visit the new outlet from 8am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
The multi million-pound store will create up to 40 new jobs, said Glen Stidever, regional head of property for

Lidl GB.
He went on: “For over 20 years, we have been creating Lidl fans across Bridgwater and are delighted to open our doors to our second store in the town in time for Christmas.
“Today’s announcement is a testament to the growing demand for our affordable and
high-quality products.
“Thank you to everyone who has played a part in supporting our stores and helping to make this new store a reality. It’s always an exciting moment when we’re finally able to see our plans come to life and make a difference to local communities.”
have received is a testament to how much our community values the work we do here at ICM.
“When ICM left Burnham six years ago to take up our premises in Highbridge, we were a small charity. Today, with the continued support of the community, we are returning to Burnham as an established leading regional provider of suicide prevention and mental health care with an outstanding reputation and brimming with awards for our work.”
Work to relocate is underway, with the charity taking up residence in December.
Donations to the Crowdfunder are still being encouraged to help ICM fit out their new home ready to help people in need of support.
“We are so excited to be back

in Burnham on Sea and with the space we now have available to us, the future is very bright,” Dawn went on.
“There is a lot of work to do to get the premises up and running as a counselling service, but every single penny that people are donating will go into transforming this much-loved newsagent into a safe and inspiring space for our clients and community.”

n People can also pledge to help with building work at the site, via www. incharleysmemory.com/ skills-pledge, or donate to the new headquarters fundraiser at https://www.crowdfunder.co. uk/p/icm-suicide-preventioncentre-1.

VANDALS have targeted banners promoting a Somerset drag show –cutting out the faces of the stars.
The attacks have occurred on several banners advertising The Absolutely Dragulous Show, set to take place at Studio24 in Wells on Friday, December 19.
Posting to social media, one of the show’s founders, George Sullovan, hit out at those responsible, alongside an image of a vandalised banner on railings in Shepton Mallet.
“I honestly cannot believe I even have to write this, but here we are,” they said. “To whoever is going around Shepton Mallet cutting the faces out of The Absolutely Dragulous Show billboards and promo for our upcoming show at Studio24 in Wells: What exactly do you think you’re achieving?
“Drag artists exist to entertain, to bring people joy, to give them a night where they can forget everything heavy going on in their lives.
“We are comedians, singers,

“So

faces out, is beyond sad. It’s pathetic.
“Promo isn’t cheap. Those posters cost real money, real time, real effort. And to have someone destroy them for what? To feel powerful? To make a point no one asked for?
“The way things are going lately, with people throwing around words like ‘free speech’ while using it as an excuse to be cruel, hateful, or downright violent, it’s honestly heartbreaking.
“Drag has always been about joy, expression, community, and escape, not whatever twisted narrative people try to paint it as.
“If you don’t like drag, don’t come to the show. It’s that simple. But going out of your way to vandalise our work? It says a lot more about you than it ever will about us.
“We’re still going to turn up. We’re still going to perform. We’re still going to bring joy. And we’re still going to be absolutely dragulous.”
n Tickets for The Absolutely Dragulous Show at Studio24 in Wells cost £20 and are available via studio24wells.com/events/ the-absolutely-dragulous-show.

THE lives of lost loved ones will once again be remembered through the St Margaret’s Hospice Light up a Life appeal.
The charity runs Light up a Life over the festive period each year, giving people the chance to celebrate and remember the lives of loved ones while supporting community hospice care.
St Margaret’s aims to raise £50,000 through this year’s appeal to help provide vital care for people living with lifelimiting illnesses across Somerset.
And, after several years of virtual-only services, following requests from the Somerset community, St Margaret’s is bringing back in-person remembrance events this December.
In-person Light up a Life events 2025 in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice take place on:
n Thursday, December 4, 6pm – 7.30pm: Remembrance gathering at Monkton Elm Garden Centre, Taunton n Sunday, December 7, 2.30pm – 4pm: Remembrance service at St John’s Church, Yeovil
The events are free to attend

but booking is essential, the charity said, with the Yeovil service set to be filmed and available online from Sunday, December 14, making it accessible to those unable to attend in person.
Light up a Life is open to anyone wishing to honour someone they miss – loved ones do not need to have been cared for by St Margaret’s Hospice, offering several meaningful ways to remember, including dedicating a star in someone’s memory, attending a remembrance gathering, or watching the recorded service

from home.
“It means so much to us that the community asked for in-person events to return, and we are proud to be able to do that this year,” said Hannah Roberts, head of fundraising for St Margaret’s Hospice Care.
“Light up a Life is a time for everyone in Somerset to come together. Whether you are remembering someone who died recently or many years ago, these events offer comfort,
connection and a chance to remember their life.”
People can also dedicate a star online, including a personal message and photo to share with family and friends.
All dedications received by Friday, December 5, can be included in the filmed Yeovil remembrance service if supporters wish.
At the heart of this year’s appeal is the story of Kath and her son Jack, who are remembering Rob – a partner and father known for his warmth, curiosity and love of the stars.
Life changed suddenly when Rob was diagnosed with advanced cancer, and as his condition worsened, St Margaret’s supported the family both at home and later on the In-Patient Unit.
“For us, the hospice was a place where we could relax as a family,” Kath said. “Whether you want to laugh or cry, there is always someone there. The hospice lifted a weight off our shoulders and gave us time to enjoy our time with Rob.”

A “SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT” of cash and two bank cards were stolen from the bedroom of a woman in her 70s during a burglary at a property in Minehead.
The burglary unfolded at a home in Glenmore Road some time between 6.40pm and 7pm on Friday, November 21, police said.
The victim discovered the suspects as they were making their way back down the stairs before they fled the scene, police said.
The suspects are described as men, with the first estimated to be around 6ft tall, who was wearing dark clothing and a face covering with a yellow marking on it, while
the second is described as wearing dark clothing and a face mask, but no more information over their appearances has been established at this time.
Officers attended the scene and have carried out high-visibility reassurance patrols in the area, have conducted houseto-house and CCTV enquiries, and crime scene investigators have attended the property, Avon & Somerset Police said.
Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Jones added: “This is a high-value burglary, and the vulnerable victim has suffered significant loss and has understandably been shaken by the incident.
“The victim was physically unharmed and is being supported by officers who have given her access to any specialist help she needs. At this stage, we believe this burglary was targeted.
“We are now appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the suspects fleeing the scene or in the vicinity shortly after the time of the offence, and for any nearby residents to contact us if they have any CCTV or doorbell footage which could assist our enquiries.”
Anyone with information about the raid should contact police on 101, quoting incident 5225327512.
YOUNG people from Somerset nurseries were welcomed into a forest school to get some outdoor education.
St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, in Midsomer Norton and part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, welcomed children from Sunflowers Day Nursery in Radstock and Mogghill Nursery School, in Midsomer Norton.
The visitors enjoyed an array of outdoor activities, from making clay hedgehogs and leaf caterpillars to completing a scavenger hunt and toasting marshmallows.

Ellen Croker, headteacher at St Benedict's Catholic Primary School, said: "We were delighted to welcome our local nursery children to St Benedict’s for the forest school experience.
"It was lovely to see them all having so much fun and will hopefully help prepare them for the move up to primary when the time comes."
Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, said: "It’s always such a joy to see our schools opening their doors so warmly to the community.
"At the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, we strive to ensure our schools sit at the very heart of local life, and this forest school event is a perfect example of that mission in action."
FROME residents can meet their representatives while bagging some Christmas bargains at the weekend.
Town councillors will be at the Saturday market on December 6 between 10am and noon to chat to residents, as well as running a fun, free craft activity between 9am and 2pm, making willow bird feeders for garden birds through the winter.

The 'meet the councillor' session, outside the library, follows a successful session on November 1, alongside an autumnal apple-pressing activity led by Sustainable Frome.
Councillors will be available at the first Saturday market every month to answer questions, hear feedback and meet anyone who would like to chat.
Cllr Fiona Barrows said: "We became town councillors because we love Frome and we want to offer our time and the skills we’ve gathered from a wide range of backgrounds to make a positive difference here.
"We’re always open to hearing from residents via email, phone, at the town hall or at council events, but we wanted to add a further, regular opportunity for people to find us and talk to us."

THE streets of Frome were filled with festive light during the annual Christmas Light Switch-On and Lantern Parade.
Residents lined the streets on November 21 for the event, organised by Frome Town Council (FTC), with scores carrying their handmade lanterns, crafted with support from Frome Lanterns, down from North Parade, accompanied by the rhythms of

de Samba.
Elsewhere, the Festive Food Court was alive with music, including performances from DJ Viner, Frome Town Band and Frome Street Bandits.
Tom Carpenter and children from Tri.Art Dance and Performing Arts Academy also wowed the crowd from the balcony.
Mayor Anita Collier led the ceremonial lights switch-on, joined by Tom Carpenter and Alice and Sophia, from Tri.Art – and were joined by Father Christmas, who also welcomed families to his grotto at the We Hear You offices.
Mayor Anita said: "This night wasn’t just about flipping a switch, it was a celebration of
what makes Frome so special: creativity, compassion and a shared sense of belonging.
"It’s a highlight of the mayor’s calendar and truly one of Frome’s standout events.
"My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who helped bring it to life."
Donations from the public on the night raised almost £1,000 for Fair Frome and the Frome Christmas Get Together, to provide a free Christmas meal and companionship for sociallyisolated, lonely and vulnerable people.
And FTC said the festivities will continue in the town, with Late Night Christmas Shopping running on Friday, December 19.
BOOK lovers in Bridgwater will have to visit a temporary library after the closure of the main facility for work to repair a damaged roof.
The interior ceiling of the Binford Place library was damaged due to roof problems, leading to the temporary closure last month.
On Monday (December 1), Somerset Council opened a temporary facility at Bridgwater House, in Kings Square.
“Work is ongoing to urgently repair the roof long-term and ensure the building is fit for purpose for many years to come,” a spokesperson said.
The temporary library offers book borrowing and returns, public computer access, and some events.
Access is from the rear of the building, via Northgate, between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
There is no parking on the site, with visitors able to park in the Northgate pay and display car park nearby, or in the Aldi car park.
Pick up and drop off for disabled customers is the lay-by on Northgate.

PLANS for 150 new homes in a Somerset village have been submitted.
The scheme, for land off Broadway Hill, in Horton near Ilminster, have been submitted to Somerset Council by Gleeson Land.
Outline plans detail the proposal, which includes 35% affordable housing, also includes a play area and a potential expansion of Horton Playing Field.
A proposed section 106 agreement, which sees developers contribute to infrastructure improvements, would see money handed over for education/healthcare

A public presentation of the plans was held with villagers in July, when residents gave their views on the proposals, with more than 700 letters also sent

Access to the development would come from Broadway Hill, the application said, with the homes sitting alongside the
nearby Channells Lane scheme.
“A key element of the design approach is to include open greenspace, ecological enhancements and recreational use across the western, southern and south-eastern portions of the application site,” it said.
“This will provide large areas for both local and existing
residents to enjoy, while also enhancing biodiversity.”

WORK is underway to create a 27-hectare nature reserve on the outskirts of Wellington.
The project, to link the Trinity Nature Reserve and the Eastcombe Fields Nature Area, is the final piece of the Wellington Green Corridor scheme, aimed at protecting long-term habitats and easing planning delays for muchneeded homes and infrastructure.
When linked, the reserve will include grassland, woodland, hedgerows, lakes and wetlands designed around existing ecological networks to improve habitat connectivity for protected species.
The project is being led by landowners KS Coles in partnership with eco planning group Greenshank Environmental, with plans to designate it a Local Nature Reserve in future.
Kim Connor Streich, CCO of Greenshank Environmental, said: “This is a genuine longterm boost for Wellington. The Coles family have created
something special here – space for wildlife, space for nature recovery and a real asset for the local area.
“What I love about this project is its legacy: these habitats will be protected for decades, giving future generations cleaner rivers, more wildlife and a stronger connection to the natural landscape around them.”
The sites are also helping to unblock stalled housing and infrastructure projects by tackling the issue of nutrient neutrality, Kim said, as one of the first UK nutrient-mitigation schemes to use an innovative drainage-ditch system to mitigate phosphorus pollution – which is important in unlocking development potential elsewhere.
Many Somerset projects have stalled amid concerns over phosphorus pollution – with developers able to instead purchase BNG units or nutrientmitigation credits from the Wellington schemes to offset their own projects, allowing them to go ahead.
LANGPORT will be lit this weekend at the annual Christmas Market and Fireworks event.
The market will run from 10am to 6pm on Saturday (December 6), with quiet fireworks planned at Cocklemoor, starting at 4.30pm.
The fireworks are designed to be autism and pet friendly, without loud sounds.
Throughout the day, visitors can peruse a range of stalls, including food and drink, as well as enjoying live entertainment.
Organisers said torches and cash for collections are advised.
Parking in the town will be limited, so residents are urged to walk to the event is possible to minimise congestion around the town centre.

BARGAINS were bagged as shoppers braved the cold for the annual Glastonbury Frost Fayre.
The festive season got underway in full on Saturday (November 29) with stalls lining the High Street.
"Another Glastonbury Frost Fayre successfully wrapped up," a spokesperson said.
"The team are now taking a well-earned break, at least until we begin preparations again early next year."
The 2026 Frost Fayre will take place on Saturday, November 28.
Stall applications will open in early August 2026, with performers urged to apply in July.
HUNDREDS of workers at Leonardo in Yeovil have ceased industrial action after agreeing a pay deal.
Staff at five UK Leonardo sites, including the Somerset plant, have ended industrial action – which saw Yeovil workers walk out earlier this month – as a result, the Unite union said.
Sites in Yeovil, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Basildon and Luton, produce defence equipment for the UK armed forces, including helicopters and radar.
Now, workers have accepted a new offer from the company, worth eight per cent over two years.
Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: “There is power in a union and workers at Leonardo should be proud of the increased pay award they have secured.
“Workers stood firm against a company making billions in profits. Our members do vital

work in helping keep the UK safe and thoroughly deserve their win.”
Unite members had already taken strike action and had more dates planned across the autumn and winter.

But, having forced the company to improve its offer and accepted this pay increase, all further planned industrial action is now cancelled.
Unite national aerospace officer, Rhys McCarthy, added: “This is a positive result for workers in aerospace and should be a warning to other employers in the sector – Unite members know their worth and are willing to take industrial action to achieve their aims. Unite is the winning union for aerospace

David
AT THE age of just 14, Taunton teenager Addison Davis had the world at her feet - literally.
Having started playing football for Taunton Town Youth FC, she progressed to Bristol City and later, the FA of Wales training scheme.
Then, in October last yearthe day before her 15th birthday - Addison suffered a devastating injury.
During a routine training session, the youngster required surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), putting football on hold.
However, now 16, the brave Monkton Wood Academy pupil has turned her recovery from surgery into a mission to help others this year - pledging to run 400km by Christmas Day 2025 to raise awareness and vital support for people affected by cancer.
Starting at the end of September, she set out to complete the distance - the equivalent of nearly 10 marathons — by Christmas Day.
"Not being able to play football was devastating," she said. "And it came at a time when I lost two close family members to cancer in the space of six weeks.
"For many months it was extremely hard, but once I was able to run again I thought if I can turn something negative into something good for people facing their own battles, then every kilometre is worth it."
Addison has been hitting the road, pavements and more to raise money for Cancer Research UK, inspired by the strength of those she has seen face the disease.
Her fundraising goal is £2,000 — and she’s already

raised £1,500 thanks to the support of family, friends, and the community.
And her family hopes the story will motivate others experiencing a setback to keep pushing forward.
"We are so incredibly proud of her," said her mum, Emily. "She has shown such courage
and maturity - and wants to help others even while she’s still figuring out her own future."
Addison is continuing her rehabilitation while completing her challenge and hopes that come January, one year on from surgery, she’ll get the all clear from her medical team and will be back on the pitch she loves.

DOGS must be kept on leads and any bird remains not on footpaths will be left as bird flu cases rise across the Avalon Marshes.
The Somerset Wildlife Trust (SWT) has issued a number of guidelines to visitors as avian flu cases increase at the Somerset beauty spot, and has closed a popular hide.
“We know this can be upsetting for visitors, but we want to reassure you that the situation is being monitored closely,” a spokesperson said. To protect staff and the public,
the SWT said:
n SWT is not collecting dead birds unless they are directly on footpaths
n Dogs must be kept on a short lead and out of the water
n Do not touch sick or dead birds. As an extra precaution, do not pick up any bird/mammal related artefacts that might normally be of interest, such as feathers, pellets, bones or fur
n Wash your hands after visiting a reserve and before smoking, drinking, eating, or touching your face
n Clean footwear thoroughly between reserve visits or visits
to the wider countryside where there is known to be bird flu
“We advise bringing a clean pair of shoes to change into when leaving the reserve and a carry bag to place dirty footwear into,” they added, and urged people to disinfect shoes thoroughly when they get home.
People should report findings to Defra on 03459 33 55 77.
“Reserves are currently open, but please refrain from entering any cordoned off areas,” they said. “Please note that Island Hide at Westhay Moor is currently closed and will remain closed while we monitor the
situation.
“There is a low risk of transmission to humans, but we are taking precautions to reduce any potential risk to staff and visitors.
“With large numbers of migratory birds arriving over the coming weeks, further cases are possible – please be prepared if visiting the Avalon Marshes, including our reserves.
“We may have to close areas of our reserves for public safety reasons during this outbreak, please look out for any signage.
“Thank you for your support.”

AN ON-DEMAND bus service helping people in Langport and Somerton get around has clocked up 10,000 journeys in 18 months.
Digital Slinky minibuses, funded by the Government’s Bus Service Improvement Grant (BSIP) and operated by Somerset Council, can be booked online or via an app –helping people get to the shops, appointments, work, or social visits.
Since starting in the two towns and surrounding villages in May 2024, the Digital Slinky has completed 10,000 journeys – and been rolled out Bridgwater, Burnham, Taunton and Wellington.
The app uses existing bus stops and landmarks as pick-up points, to connect people to
local places such as supermarkets, town centres, education and health care services.
For people who can’t get to a designated pick-up point, due to mobility issues, a pick-up can be arranged from home, with booking possible up to an hour before journey time and two weeks in advance.
Lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “Demand-responsive transport is essential in a rural county like Somerset and the fantastic success of the service so far is proof that the council is providing a lifeline to local people who don’t always have easy access to a bus route or car.
“The work of the team in Somerton and Langport has been phenomenal and I

CAROLS sung by Somerset choirs will greet visitors to a county attraction this Christmas.
Montacute House, near Yeovil, is hosting a special musical event between November 29 and January 1, when people will be able to hear carols specially recorded by Somerset choirs around the grounds.
All the choirs are based near the house, with the closest – All Saints Church Primary School – based in the village itself, less than 500 yards away, with pupils lending their voices to the very jolly Jingle Bells. Other groups featured in Montacute House Sings are:
n Ilminster Community Choir
– The choir was first formed over 30 years ago and meets weekly at the Ilminster Arts Centre on Thursday evenings for two hours of singing for pleasure, generating a great sense of togetherness, and reinforcing the notion that singing is good for the soul. Led by Bethany Brown, it specialises in songs from many genres, most of which are in delicious four-part harmony.
n Harmony 303 Community Choir – There are approximately 70 members of the Harmony 303 community choir who meet weekly on a Tuesday morning at Norton-sub-Hamdon Village Hall for rehearsals. They are a mixed choir, and a group holiday is arranged each year which involves a performance.
n Montacute Village Voices – A group of local people who all love to sing. They meet once a week to rehearse a mixture of songs from old to modern, and in a variety of styles as well, such as showtunes and choral music to name but a few.
n Somer Singers, Somerton –This mixed-voice, four-part vocal harmony group of 15 members describe themselves as

‘a group of friends who just love to sing together’. The neighbours around Aller Village Hall are treated to the choirs’ talents every Wednesday evening when they practice and perfect their ever-growing repertoire of songs from the 60s through to the present day. n Children from All Saints Church School, with Luch Roberts leading the choir.
“All Saints Church School Choir were thrilled to take part in Montacute House Sings this autumn,” she said.
“The children loved performing their Christmas songs and felt part of something truly special.
“They look forward to sharing their singing with family at Montacute Houseand cherish their reindeer bell from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Recording also took place during drizzly days in October, with choirs singing in the Great Hall of Montacute House.
Montacute Village Voices said: “We were delighted to be part of this. Singing in the Great Hall under the guidance of a professional choirmaster was an inspiring and unforgettable experience.”
Award-winning Chris Grabham, a county musical director, conducted four of the
five choirs involved for the recording sessions.
“Singing carols is one of my favourite Christmas traditions (besides a good Christmas dinner and opening presents) and so it’s wonderful to be able to celebrate this in a slightly different way in 2025,” Chris said.
“By inviting hundreds of local singers to record various carols at Montacute House, we have created a unique Christmas project with its own individual charm which is rooted in Somerset heritage.
“It is so fantastic that we can recognise the talents of our local community alongside this beautiful festive exhibition.”
He added: “Community choirs are such an important part of both our Somerset tradition and our modern society, providing important social spaces for new people to meet, collaborate and make music together.
“As musical director of the project, it has been a pleasure to work with the National Trust in bringing this exciting new concept to life, and it has been wonderful to work with the singers involved.”
Throughout December, visitors will encounter the recorded songs as they stroll around the grounds; all in
different locations and each with a festive backdrop inspired by the carols and motifs from the architecture of Montacute.
Hidden in each backdrop will be a White Hart stag for visitors to spot.
Gareth Parker, property operations manager at Montacute House, said: “Christmas is an evocative time of year, with all the senses stimulated.
“We are thrilled to be bringing the sound of the season to Montacute House with the echoes of traditional carols floating through the grounds.”
“The fact the choirs are all people from local communities makes it truly special,” he added. “We hope that they have enjoyed the experience of making the recordings as much as we’re sure that visitors to Montacute House will enjoy listening to them.
“There will be such a festive feeling of Christmas carolling around the grounds, that we have no doubt people will want to lend their own voices to the songs as well, perhaps followed by a tasty mince pie and hot chocolate.”
n Montacute House Sings is open daily from November 29 to January 1, except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, from 10am to 4pm.
SOMERSET caravan site
owner John Holland has been ordered to pay more than £116,000 after being convicted of converting a site of special scientific interest into a commercial caravan site –cramming dozens of vehicles and dumping waste on the land.
Holland pleaded guilty to disturbing the SSSI at Long Load, near Long Sutton, which serves as an internationally important breeding ground for wading birds and waterfowl.
The 59-year-old, of Tapmoor Road, Moorlinch, appeared before Taunton Crown Court on November 26 for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to two offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
The prosecution was brought by Natural England following a four-year investigation into Holland’s activities.
The probe found he had turned the 1.2-hectare grassland site, which sits in the Wet Moor SSSI, into a permanent commercial caravan park, with more than 90 caravans and 40 vehicles crammed into two fields.
He has also laid 300 metres of Tarmac roads, as well as dumping household and commercial waste on the site.
Between 2011 and 2018, Holland and his family had unsuccessfully applied five times for planning consent to develop the site into a permanent caravan park – with the refusals upheld by the Planning Inspectorate.
The SSSI, which also falls within a Special Protection Area and Ramsar site, was designated in 1985 and forms part of the extensive marsh grasslands and ditch systems which make up the Somerset Levels and Moors. It provides nationally important breeding habitat for threatened populations of wading birds such as curlew and

black-tailed godwit and supports internationally important populations of red-listed bird species including the endangered Bewick’s swan, lapwing and pochard, as well as being home to over 3% of the global population of Eurasian teal.
Natural England concluded the works carried out by Holland had resulted in habitat loss, displacement and longterm disturbance to the species, and charged Holland with two offences in March 2023.
After pleading guilty, Holland – who was also convicted in September 2023 of physically threatening and abusing Natural England officers who visited the site to investigate the initial allegations in 2021 – claimed to be bankrupt.
However, Natural England commenced proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and instructed financial investigators, who found Holland had accrued more than £1 million in unexplained cash and assets, which were successfully evidenced to have arisen from his unlawful operation of the caravan park.
The court held Holland’s
offending demonstrated a criminal lifestyle and certified he had accrued £1 million of illicit financial gain from his actions.
He was ordered to pay Natural England £116,263 within three months.
The court noted that the amount it could order Holland to pay was limited in the context of the total illicit benefit accrued owing to his active bankruptcy proceedings.
day the order is not fulfilled.
Sentencing Holland, His Honour Judge Richard Shepherd, said: “You had numerous opportunities to rectify the damage caused and carried on regardless, which amplified the effects on the site’s fauna and flora.
“This was a deliberate and persistent set of offending which showed a flagrant disregard of the law.”

The court also granted Natural England an order requiring Holland to restore the site to its former condition as semi-natural grassland by January 23, 2026, removing all caravans and associated infrastructure and creating and maintaining habitat for breeding and wintering birds.
If he fails to comply, he faces a further unlimited fine plus an additional £100 fine for each
After the hearing Matt Heard, Natural England national delivery director, said: “We welcome the court’s judgement, which is the result of four years of dedicated investigation and demonstrates our clear commitment to protecting Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
“Holland’s behaviour has shown blatant contempt for this intentionally important conservation site and the rare and threatened species that depend upon it.
“His actions were completed in full knowledge of the impact they would have, yet he chose to repeatedly disregard Natural England’s advice and prioritise achieving significant illicit financial gain over complying with his legal obligations to protect the site.”

CONCERNS a longrunning annual BBC lecture was edited to appease US President Donald Trump – after he threatened to sue the broadcaster – have prompted a letter to the director general from a Somerset MP.
Anna Sabine (Lib Dem, Frome & East Somerset) has written to Ofcom after the Reith Lecture given by Dutch historian and author Rutger Bregman was edited to omit a line characterising Mr Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history” ahead of the talk being aired on BBC Radio 4.
The Reith Lecture, a prestigious annual address, came after the President threatened to sue the BBC for up to $5 billion (around £3.8bn) after it edited a speech he gave on January 6, 2021 – the day a mob attacked the US Capital building in a bid to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which Mr Trump lost.
The edit ‘spliced’ two separate parts of Mr Trump’s speech in Washington DC that day, which he claims misrepresented what he said, a charge the BBC denies, despite
apologising for the incident.
Regarding the edit of Mr Bregman’s lecture, the BBC said the comments were removed following legal advice.
Responding to the decision, Mr Bregman said: “The BBC has decided to censor my first Reith lecture.
"They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as ‘the most openly corrupt president in American history’.
“This sentence was taken out of a lecture they commissioned, reviewed through the full editorial process, and recorded four weeks ago in front of 500 people in the BBC Radio Theatre.
“I was told the decision came from the highest levels within the BBC.”
Now, Ms Sabine, who is the Liberal Democrats’ spokesperson for culture, media and sport, has written to BBC director general Tim Davie, suggesting the President’s “intimidatory tactics have been effective”.
“That should alarm anyone who values the independence of our public broadcaster,” she went on.
“To censor a speaker’s
legitimate critique of power sets a dangerous precedent,” she continued.
“It raises serious questions about whether the BBC is prepared to resist external pressure, or whether figures such as Mr Trump can influence editorial decisions simply by issuing legal threats.”
She said the incident was important “at a moment when the defence of free speech and democratic norms is more important than ever”, and urged the BBC to broadcast the lecture in full.
“I would also like a full explanation of why this decision was taken, who authorised the edit, and what steps the BBC will take to ensure that legitimate criticism of power(ful) political figures is not suppressed in future,” she added.
A BBC spokesperson said: “All of our programmes are required to comply with the BBC’s editorial guidelines, and we made the decision to remove one sentence from the lecture on legal advice.”
Mr Bregman, a long-time campaigner for universal basic income and against wealth
inequality, has previously said the United States could be on the verge of an “authoritarian breakthrough” under the Trump presidency.
And he said the edit of his lecture left him “genuinely dismayed”, adding: “Not because people can’t disagree with my words, but because self-censorship driven by fear (Trump threatening to sue the BBC) should concern all of us.
“It’s especially ironic because the lecture is exactly about the ‘paralysing cowardice’ of today’s elites.
“About universities, corporations and media networks bending the knee to authoritarianism.
"I share this with respect for the many excellent journalists at the BBC. And with the hope that transparency helps strengthen, not weaken, our democratic culture.”
Ms Sabine’s letter comes just days after she wrote to media watchdog Ofcom over a segment of a GB News show highlighting people with “foreign-sounding names” in UK courts, which she branded “frankly, racist”, which the broadcaster denied.

AHUB dedicated to recycling plastic waste from the sea has been officially opened in Somerset.
The facility has been unveiled in Weston-Super-Mare by The Birnbeck Regeneration Trust charity, aiming to “turn trash into treasure”.
Plastic recovered from the waters is transformed into newly-reimagined items, such as keyrings and picture frames.
The hub has been installed at the trust’s newly-renovated headquarters, in a former public toilet building on Birnbeck Road, dubbed the ‘Loo-vre’.
Items made from the recycled plastic will be available for purchase, with funds generated going towards the trust’s long-term aim of restoring the Victorian-era Birnbeck Pier to its former glory.
The project was made possible by community solar farm, Burnham and Weston Energy CIC, which donated
£8,000 to the project via a Sunshine Grant, which is currently welcoming applications from community groups in North Somerset.
With the grant, the trust purchased specialist machinery, such as a plastic shredder and an injection-moulding machine, allowing waste like discarded bottles to be transformed into useful items.

“Creative people doing creative things is really setting a tone for this area, while being focused on sustainability and education.”
Volunteers will collect waste plastic from the shoreline and deliver it to the hub.
Susan Cooke, from of the trust, said: “The most important part of this project is the educational aspect, and we’re imparting that message through creativity. People will hopefully stop and think about the amount of single-use plastic they purchase, and hopefully use less in the future.”

The hub opened to the public in November, showcasing some of the machinery in action and introducing visitors to a range of artworks which decorate the interior.
Ribbon-cutting duties went to MP Dan Aldridge (Lab, Weston-super-Mare) and mayor of the town, Cllr Martin Williams.
Mr Aldridge said: “The thing I love about this is that everybody has contributed something, it’s the culmination of years of work going back to before the pandemic.
Denys Rayner, of Burnham and Weston Energy CIC, said: “It’s great to see projects like this come to life. It’s a win-win for the area with the positive benefits this will have on the coastline, and the trust’s ambition to restore the old pier and give the area a real boost.
"We are still welcoming applications from charities and community organisations in the area,” Denys added. “If you have an idea for something you would like to seek funding for, please head to our website.” n For more details of the Burnham and Weston Energy CIC Sunshine Grant, visit burnhamandwestonenergy. co.uk/sunshine-fund.

PEOPLE are being urged to help tackle drink and drug driving in Somerset this Christmas.
Avon & Somerset Police is set to carry out proactive roadside checks and talking to motorists over the festive period, and revealed drink and drug driving had been the core factor in 25 per cent of all fatal crashes so far this year.
The month-long Christmas roads policing operation launched on Monday (December 1) and police said they were "urging people who live in Avon and Somerset’s villages, towns, and cities to
report those they suspect are getting behind the wheel while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs".
"Officers use community intelligence, ANPR cameras, CCTV, and other technology 365 days a year, to target those who bring misery by causing death or serious injury collisions by taking unnecessary risks," a spokesperson said.
"We are making it easier than ever before for the public to report drink drivers; simply use your camera phone to scan the QR code, which will take you to a dedicated section of our website."

Inspector Matt Boiles said: "There is no safe way to drink and drive – not at Christmas, not any day of the year. Even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can seriously impair your judgement, reaction times, and coordination, putting lives at risk. If you’re heading out to celebrate, please plan ahead and book a taxi, use public transport or designate a sober driver. Don’t be tempted to take chances, we will be out there conducting checks and responding to intelligence.
"A drink or drug driving conviction can cost you your licence, your job and impact the lives of others. If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, please do your part and report it. Together, we can stop dangerous drivers before they cause harm."
Of the 32 fatal crashes police had attended this year, drink and drugs have been a factor in eight, police added.
Clare Moody, police and crime commissioner for Avon and Somerset, said: "People should not be drink or drug driving in the first place, yet unfortunately some still make that choice and in doing so put themselves and others at real risk. Any life lost to such
reckless behaviour is one too many. If you know someone is driving under the influence, please report it – your action could save a life."
Karen MacDonald, regional manager for Crimestoppers South West, said: "Those under the influence of drink or drugs are far more likely to cause a crash, sometimes with fatal consequences. Many of those drivers regret their behaviour, but by then it’s too late.
"You can help ‘put the brakes’ on regular drink and drug drivers by telling our charity what you know. Being able to give information anonymously with no comeback is so worthwhile as it helps tackle these kinds of dangerous and criminal behaviours."
People can report suspected drink or drug drivers on 0800 555 111, or by scanning the QR code below:

ACRAZE of installing Christmas lights on cars could land vehicle owners with a fine and penalty points, the RAC has warned.
The warning comes after police issued "words of warning" to a driver in Poole, Dorset, whose car sported hundreds of lights.
The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 requires headlights to be white or yellow, and rear lights to be red - so any red lights to the front of a vehicle, or blue lights anywhere - as they are reserved for emergency vehicles - can confuse other drivers and treated as a safety hazard.
A Dorset Police spokesperson said: "The driver was stopped and given words of advice about the traffic offences he was committing and also reminded about the seriousness of celebrating Christmas before December.
"Displaying red light to the front of a vehicle or other colours to the rear that aren't listed in Road Traffic Regulations is an offence and can land you with a £50 fine."
The incident has prompted debate in Dorset and beyond, with the RAC clarifying rules over the decorating of vehicles.
While it is not illegal to decorate a car for the festive season, people may risk a fine and penalty points if the decorations do any of the following:
n Obstruct the driver’s view of the road
n Add any additional lighting sources
n Attach anything to your

vehicle that may cause an injury to pedestrians
n Attach anything to your vehicle that is likely to fall off and/or cause a danger to other road users
However, magnetic signs, stickers, or festive wraps are generally legal if they don’t obscure number plates or the driver’s view of the road.
Festive items inside the car, such as dashboard ornaments, are also allowed as long as they don’t obstruct the driver’s vision or distract other road users.
Drivers must ensure they have a "full and clear view of the road ahead".
Failure to do so risks three penalty points and a fine of up to £1,000.

MORE than 50 open and green spaces in Frome are now in local control after a 'devolution' deal was struck.
Frome Town Council has formally taken ownership of 57 spaces around the town following an agreement with Somerset Council in the spring.
On October 28, one of the new spaces, a large ‘green corridor’ at Brunel Way, was planted with spring bulbs as part of a wider bulb-planting campaign by FTC’s Resilience and Environment teams.
Residents helped out, including six-year-olds Gabriel and Oisín.
Gabriel said: "I liked planting the bulbs with my friend Oisín because we walk here together. I’m excited to see them grow."
Councillor Mark Dorrington said: "At Frome Town Council, we’ve got a long track record of working with the community
and other partners to maximise the benefits of our shared spaces, making them places for community, connection and play and havens for biodiversity and wildlife.
"The acquisition of 57 new open spaces means we can do more of the same, breathing new life into neglected and underused green spaces, as well as enhancing those that are already well used.
"Projects like the community garden at Milk Street, new play equipment at Egford and Welshmill and working with the communities at The Mount and St Johns are all part of this bigger picture.

"In addition to the land

we’ve acquired through devolution, we’re pleased to have secured an important piece of land on the river bank at Adderwell, working with

Friends of the River Frome, and the new community woodland in memory of Moko Sellars, where we’ll be planting 3,800 trees in 2026."

PARENTS and carers are being urged to check their children's symptoms using a new app.
As winter illnesses rise, increasing pressure on health services, people can find out more about symptoms using the HANDi app before deciding whether to visit their GP or A&E.
HANDi was developed by Somerset paediatric specialists and provides up-to-date information on common childhood conditions and how to manage them, including advice on whether a child can be cared for at home, if a GP appointment is needed, or if urgent treatment is required.
Dr Sarah Bridges, consultant paediatrician at the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Every Winter, we see many families and children coming to our emergency department with coughs, colds and other childhood illnesses.
"It can be so worrying and confusing knowing when and where to seek help. The HANDi app helps families have confidence in making those decisions. That’s why we’re encouraging families to download the app for expert,
local advice which is available 24/7. Built by our own paediatric team here in Somerset, it reflects the same pathways our clinicians follow every day, helping families get the right care in the right place at the right time."
Dr Joanne Nicholl, GP at Buttercross Health Centre and designated doctor for safeguarding children at NHS Somerset, added: "As a local GP, I know it can be worrying for parents if their child becomes unwell, and this happens more commonly during the winter months.
"The HANDi app is a fantastic resource that gives clear, trusted NHS advice based on Somerset’s pathways. It helps families feel more confident about when to seek help and when it’s safe to care for their child at home.
"GPs are always happy to see children if parents are concerned, but checking the app first for useful advice and guidance is a good starting point."
The HANDi app can be downloaded on Apple and Android devices and is tailored specifically for Somerset.
Parents can also access help

Asinging for lung health group in Yeovil is helping local people with lung conditions breathe more easily, feel more confident, and enjoy the power of singing together.
Yeovil Sing2Breathe is part of a wider network of singing for lung health groups with the aim of supporting people living with long-term respiratory conditions. Building on the success of similar programmes in Bridgwater, Cheddar, and Wells, the Yeovil group meets every Thursday afternoon from 2pm to 3.15pm at Westlands Entertainment Venue, led by experienced community singing leader Nikki Hewson.
Participants of the groups live with a variety of lung health conditions, including bronchiectasis, COPD, asthma, and sarcoidosis and the sessions provide a relaxing space to come together and learn breathing techniques, relaxation methods, and singing exercises to help manage symptoms and improve wellbeing. Many have reported noticeable improvements in their daily lives.
“A brilliant new class for our area,” said one participant. “It offers a valuable, previously unavailable way to help manage common lung conditions. Normally, support ends after medication or a one-off rehab course, but Sing2Breathe offers something ongoing and empowering.”
“It’s an excellent way to understand how you breathe and how to control it, all in a happy, inclusive environment. Totally positive in every way.”
“With practice, I can use the breathing techniques every day,” said one member, “Nikki’s love of singing really lifts us all.”
Sing2Breathe founder Kate Lynch set up Sing2breathe in October 2023 and this year the organisation achieved charitable status. Its summer celebration event, ‘Sing Out Loud for Lung Health’, brought together members from all its regional groups for an uplifting afternoon of shared music and experiences.
Looking ahead, Sing2Breathe is now focusing on securing the future of its Yeovil group by exploring local funding opportunities and partnerships to ensure that residents can continue to benefit from this.
Why not come along for a taster session and see how Sing2Breathe could help you breathe a little easier? Places must be booked in advance.
