SANTA took time out from his busy pre-Christmas schedule to visit a Somerset care home.

Crandon Springs Care Home, in Wells, launched its festive celebrations in style at the weekend as around 100 residents, families, friends, and visitors came together for its annual Christmas Fayre.

Handcrafted gifts, live music, and a special visit from Santa Claus were all part of the event, with the home dressed for the occasion with sparkling lights, Christmas trees and seasonal displays.

Pebble art, jewellery, plants, and stationery and gifts were among items on sale, while

guests enjoyed live Christmas music, mulled wine, mince pies, and a tempting selection of homemade cakes prepared by the Crandon Springs team.

Fayre favourites, including a raffle, bottle tombola, and lucky dip, helped raise £200 for the Residents’ Fund, which supports enrichment events throughout the year.

An appearance from Santa Claus saw visitors pose for photos, including baby Laurie, 10 weeks old and the grandchild of resident Archie, who enjoyed his very first festive photo with the man himself.

Crandon Springs manager, Meg Cleal, said: "We were thrilled to welcome so many

Fayre sees baby enjoy first photo with Santa - at just 10 weeks

people from Wells and the surrounding areas to our Christmas Fayre.

"Events like this mean a great deal to our residents, and seeing the home filled with laughter, conversation, and community spirit was wonderful."

Activities coordinator Emily Merchant added: "Our team

worked hard to make the fayre special, and seeing the residents so happy made it all worthwhile.

"We’re very grateful to the local stallholders, to Santa for taking time out of his busy schedule, and to all the families and friends who helped make this year’s fayre such a success."

The incident occurred between Sparkford and Wincanton at around 2.15pm and involved a single vehicle, police said.

“Sadly one person, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

Three other people were taken to hospital, one of whom is believed to be in life-threatening condition, they said. One remains in hospital with non-lifethreatening or life changing injuries and the third has since been discharged to recover at home.

The road was closed in both directions.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has any dashcam footage, should call 101 and quote reference 5225328170.

“The cause is not thought to be deliberate.”

Dawn French sitcom filmed in Somerset set to hit screens

ANEW BBC sitcom starring comedy legend Dawn French - and filmed in Somerset - is set to hit TV screens early next year.

The first glimpses of the show - Can You Keep a Secret?have been revealed, including a backdrop of stunning Somerset.

The six-part series, starring national treasure Dawn and Mark Heap (Friday Night Dinner, Green Wing), was filmed on location in Axbridge, Cheddar and beyond, in February and March last year with the help of Screen Somerset.

Axbridge’s Medieval square is set to feature heavily, as it did in the recent series, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

Filming for feature films and tv brought an estimated £4.2m of spend to the county last year and Screen Somerset, Somerset Council’s film office, said it is helping entice more productions this way.

Warning over anti-social behaviour in village

POLICE have been patrolling a derelict Somerset factory after reports of anti-social behaviour – and young people entering the site.

Avon & Somerset Police PCSO Will was in Evercreech following the reports and took the opportunity to warn people that entering such sites is illegal – and dangerous.

“We want to remind everyone that entering derelict buildings is not only illegal but extremely dangerous,” a police

spokesperson said.

“These sites often contain unstable structures, broken glass, hazardous materials, and other unseen risks that could lead to serious injury or worse.

“Parents and guardians, please speak with your children about the dangers and legal consequences of trespassing. Let’s work together to keep our community safe.”

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or has concerns should report it on 101.

Hundreds of jobs at risk in factory closure

HUNDREDS of jobs are set to go at a Somerset cosmetics factory.

On Wednesday (November 19), workers at the Swallowfield KDC/One plant in Wellington, were stunned to be told news of the firm’s plan to close the branch.

The factory is understood to employ around 260 people, ranking it among the largest employers in the Somerset town.

A spokesperson for the firm said: “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to propose to close our Swallowfield Wellington production site.

“This proposal was not taken lightly, and it comes after an extensive review of various factors regarding our manufacturing operations.

“As a result of the review, we propose to absorb the volume from Swallowfield Wellington and allocate it to our Barony Universal site in Scotland so we can operate more efficiently.

“Our priority remains the well-being and support of our

employees during this proposed transition. We will be providing assistance and resources –including a number of relocation opportunities – to employees that may be impacted by this.”

President and CEO of KDC/ One, Nicholas Whitley, added in a letter to workers: “While we have made significant investment in our Wellington Somerset site since it was acquired by KDC/One in 2019, it has become clearer to the Board that the current infrastructure does not provide us with what we need to support our future growth ambitions.

“As a major employer in

Wellington, we recognise the impact that this proposal will have on the town and surrounding areas,” he added. “Therefore, we look forward to working closely with the region’s business community and local job support and skills agencies to assist those employees affected.”

MP Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton & Wellington) has written to Mr Whitley calling for more information.

“After 149 years of

Swallowfield in Wellington and the recent investment made in the premises in 2023/24, your proposals are totally unexpected and beg the question: Why you are not willing or proposing to sell the business as a going concern?,” he said.

“With over 250 jobs at stake, I urge the company to put their interests, and those of Wellington, ahead of short-term considerations by thinking again and keeping the premises operating until a buyer is found.”

Mr Amos added: “While I am pursuing continued operation as a priority, I have also spoken today with the leader of Somerset Council, Bill Revans.

“He has now asked the Economic Development department team to step up support for those affected.

“If the closure is to go ahead, we must do everything we can to help them.”

Long-awaited roundabout work finished after £10.7m scheme

A£10.7 MILLION upgrade of a roundabout near Bridgwater is fully operational after months of lane and road closures.

Drivers can now utilise changes to the Dunball Roundabout and surrounding routes, which links junction 23 of the M5 with Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea and the new Gravity campus at Puriton,

which is set to bring thousands of new jobs.

Carried out by Somerset Council contractor Centregreat, the work aims to improve traffic flow and improve the space for cyclists and pedestrians.

The roadworks began in November last year, with various road and lane closures in place throughout the year for works and resurfacing.

A Somerset Council spokesperson said: “The upgraded Dunball roundabout is now fully operational. Our specialist teams will stay on site for the next few weeks to ensure the junction is operating as efficiently as possible.

“We’re grateful to residents, businesses and road users for their patience and support. Thank you.”

Bridgwater footpaths get a powerful deep-clean

BRIDGWATER’S main thoroughfares have had a deep clean.

King Square, The Cornhill, Fore Street and High Street are among spots that have had a spruce as part of efforts by Bridgwater Town Council (BTC).

The areas were refreshed between 5pm and 11pm using high-pressure cleaning techniques to improve the appearance and safety of public spaces.

The project is being delivered by specialist contractor Haloblast and

Coatings Ltd, with cleaning including pathway washing and chewing gum removal.

Deep cleans occur in the town twice each year, alongside regular cleaning by BTC staff.

Cllr Tim Mander, chair of the BTC Amenities Committee, said: “Keeping our town clean and welcoming is a shared responsibility. These deep cleans are an important part of our efforts to maintain public spaces, and we encourage residents to let us know if they spot any issues. Together, we can make Bridgwater a place we’re all proud of.”

Bridgwater couple take dementia care VAT fight direct to the Chancellor...

TWO veteran Army doctors from Bridgwater have taken a campaign for fairness in the tax system affecting people with dementia directly to the Treasury.

Dr Michael Staunton and his wife Dr Avril Staunton were in London to hand-deliver an open letter calling on Chancellor Rachel Reeves to end a VAT rule that adds 20% to dementia care costs faced by families.

Avril was diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), a rare form of dementia, at age 60.

The couple were joined at The Treasury by Libby Price and Dr Liz Dennis from non-profit The Filo Project that offers dementia care, alongside Somerset MP Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dem, Tiverton & Minehead).

Tax issues arise from the fact dementia care is not routinely provided for free on the NHS, leaving families to cover all or part of the cost themselves. And a tax anomaly means The Filo Project must charge families an extra 20% in VAT because they are a Community Interest Company.

If they offered the same service as a state-regulated institution or charity the service would be tax-exempt.

For Filo clients who attend twice a week and pay for all their care, the issue means families pay more than £3,000 a year (£3,120) extra in VAT. Since The Filo Project was set up in 2014, families have paid an extra £500,000 in VAT for their day care.

Avril, who was a notable gynaecologist and authored several books, now attends two Filo Project groups for her dementia day care.

Her husband Michael said: “If Avril had a different permanent disability, we wouldn’t have to pay VAT on her care or it would be paid for

by the state.

“The Filo Project is a life saver to me and many other family carers. It’s not a matter of convenience, it’s a lifeline in giving families respite. Especially when I am exhausted and Avril’s needs have escalated.

“And looking at the bigger picture, day care like The Filo Project saves money for Local Authorities as families are less likely to reach crisis point and need expensive residential care.

“It’s unfair that a tax anomaly means they have to charge families extra just because they’re a CIC.

“That’s why we made the trip to Westminster to hand-deliver our open letter to Rachel Reeves. We’re calling for this unfair dementia tax to be removed as soon as possible.”

The open letter has been signed by 150 supporters, many of whom have family members with dementia or who work in social care.

And MP Mrs Gilmour is also backing their call for changes to the tax system.

“I have seen first-hand the high-quality care delivered by The Filo Project for people with

dementia in Mid Devon,” she said.

“Dementia is a very important issue for me, and it is groups like The Filo Project who are providing the important connection, community and care for those with dementia, as well as much-needed respite for their loved ones.

“The Filo Project operates as a CIC and service users are required to pay 20% VAT for each session if their care service isn’t commissioned by a local authority. This in effect creates a two tier system.

“I am proud to support the Filo Project’s campaign to remove VAT on CICs that provide crucial dementia care

services. Only by removing this VAT will we see the expansion of community-focused service providers like Filo – benefiting people in Tiverton and Minehead and across the UK.”

Libby Price, co-founder and director of The Filo Project, added: “The Government waives VAT for caviar, yet essential dementia care provided by a social enterprise like ours is considered a taxable luxury service. For many families it means choosing between their loved one receiving care, and eating or heating.

“Removing this VAT wouldn’t cost the Treasury much but would mean the world to families facing dementia.” Campaigners, including the Stauntons, are urging the Chancellor to make this simple change to the VAT rules at the Budget today (November 26).

A Government spokesperson said: “We are putting Britain at the forefront of transforming treatment for dementia through continuing to fund high-quality research into the disease and ensuring new clinically and cost-effective treatments are rolled out in a safe and timely way.”

Appeal to save Taunton hydrotherapy pool

AFUNDRAISING effort

has been launched to save a hydrotherapy pool at a Taunton community hub.

Compass Wellbeing, on the Belvedere Trading Estate, is run by the Compass Disability Services charity and operates the pool, used by around 100 people each week.

However, the fully-accessible pool is at risk of closure if urgent repairs are not carried out – with the charity now appealing for support to fund the project.

MP Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton & Wellington) recently toured the facilities – including the pool – with centre manager Michelle Edwards, who spoke of the urgency of the appeal.

“As the only publicly bookable hydrotherapy pool in the area, we are relied upon by a lot of people and fully booked until January,” she said.

“Our users often do not feel

comfortable at other pools, whether that be because of the noise, accessibility, expected behaviours, or temperature difference in and out of the pool. Hydrotherapy is so important for pain management, rehabilitation, and emotional regulation, it also provides that feeling of being free.”

She said fundraising efforts have been going well, thanks to support from the local community, but still needed backing.

“We’ve raised £12,000 out of

the £35,000 target, so we are a third of the way there,” she added. “The response from the community and local businesses has been amazing and it has given us the confidence that we will be able to hit the target.

“We just want to keep pushing to ensure that the hydrotherapy pool stays open, and continues to provide an essential service for our community.”

Mr Amos backed the campaign and said “everything possible needs to be done to

stop the pool closing”.

“Michelle and the rest of the team are doing an amazing job, and there is far more to Compass than just the hydro pool,” he added.

“I will be doing everything I can to support Compass through working with businesses and looking for grant opportunities.”

Family's warning over flu jabs after a lost Christmas due to the "scary" illness

“I HAVE never felt so ill. It took me six months to fully recover and rebuild my energy after having flu.”

Those were the words of Jill Pettitt, who was hospitalised on Boxing Day last year after contracting the flu – along with much of her family.

Now, the 65-year-old is urging others to get their flu jab as peak season approaches –and avoid Christmas being ruined by illness.

It all began for the Pettitt family, from Taunton, when Jill’s granddaughter, Astrid, starting feeling poorly.

Her mum, and Jill’s daughter, Rebecca, said she thought the one-year-old had picked up a bug from her nursery.

“She had a sudden fever, was very lethargic and couldn’t settle and then became very poorly,” the 32-year-old went on.

“The next day I felt unwell with aching bones and was so tired I couldn’t stay awake, so I asked my mum if we could go and stay with her and my dad, so she could help look after us and she kindly did.

“A few days later, about a week before Christmas, my little girl got bronchiolitis and had to be admitted into A&E and be treated with a nebuliser.

“Then my mum also started to feel unwell.”

The family tested for Covid, she said, but came back negative, and things got worse.

“Although we were all feeling unwell, Christmas is such an important time for our family and particularly my mum, who wanted to make it special, so we tried to struggle on,” Rebecca added.

“My mum started to feel more unwell and by Christmas Day I have never seen her look so ill. She looked grey, she couldn’t move or eat and had lost a lot of weight very quickly.

“My dad, my brother and I

were so worried about her, particularly as she has asthma, although it is normally very well controlled.

“I tried to persuade her to go to hospital, but she didn’t want to ruin Christmas Day for the family.

“My dad was so worried as her breathing was rattling, and she couldn’t even keep down a sip of water.

“On Boxing Day, we persuaded her to go to Minehead Minor Injuries Unit. They were absolutely fantastic. They organised for an ambulance to take her to Musgrove Park Hospital.

“When she was admitted into A&E and was swabbed to understand what was making her ill. They found she had flu (Influenza A); her oxygen saturation levels were low, and they were worried about sepsis, so they admitted her to resus initially, and then she was sent to a respiratory ward where she received antibiotics and anti-viral medication for five days.

“It was really scary. I love my mum so much and rely on her a lot. It was terrifying to see

her so unwell. And to see the effect it had on my dad and brother. We were all so frightened. She was so fragile when she’s normally so strong.”

She urged people eligible for a flu vaccine – including elderly people, those aged from two to three, and anyone with an autoimmune disorder – to get one before peak season.

“Having flu is so much worse than having a bad cold. I have never felt so unwell,” she added.

“I had no energy. I felt drained and just wanted to be left alone. It was like being hit by a truck.

Thankfully, Jill has now recovered, but said it was not easy.

“I have never felt so ill,” she said. “It took me six months to fully recover and rebuild my energy after having flu.

“I went from being very fit and active, walking my dog every day to someone who had no energy, struggled to get out of bed, was exhausted and couldn’t eat.”

Dr Rob Weaver, deputy chief medical officer at NHS Somerset, said: “With the flu

season hitting the NHS more than a month earlier than usual and cases three times higher than at this time last year, there has never been a better time to get your flu vaccination to protect yourself and your loved ones ahead of the festive season.

“Last winter (September 2024 to March 2025), 1,780 people were hospitalised in Somerset as a result of having flu, Covid and RSV.

“With it taking up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to provide optimal protection –now is the best time for those who are eligible to be vaccinated.

“You can get vaccinated at your GP, your community pharmacy and at pop up clinics for pregnant women and school children.

"And, for the first time you can now get your two-three year vaccinated at most community pharmacies.”

New community car

ANEW car is now transporting people around in rural Somerset communities.

Wivey Link Community Transport is celebrating after it was able to add a new vehicle to its iconic red fleet, set up to help combat rural isolation by way of a membership taxi service, open to all ages and for any reason if they have no access to transport be it public or private.

Wivey Link manager, Bec Briar, secured funding through a bid to the Rural England Prosperity Fund.

"West Somerset ranks very high nationally for poor social mobility and the inadequate transport connectivity exacerbates this," she said. "Wivey Link aims to facilitate transport throughout the community and this has widespread benefits to people’s lives and also the rural economy. That applies to young and old, whether for attending leisure activities, appointments or simply getting to work."

Dunelm opening date

A WORK is progressing on the refurbishment of Yeovil Dunelm –which was destroyed by fire last year.

In August 2024, the roof of the store – in the Quedam Centre – was severely damaged in a blaze.

It has been closed since, though it has partially re-opened as a collection site for online orders.

However, work has been ongoing to bring the shop back to life, with the Quedam now saying it will on December 16.

In an online update, the centre said: “The Dunelm store is coming together beautifully — lighting’s up, flooring’s down, and we’re counting the days until we open on December 16.”

Work on the second phase of refurbishment work at the site was completed in October in preparation for the fit-out, which is now proceeding.

£100,000 a year to protect Brewhouse

FUNDING of more than £100,000 a year aims to secure the future of The Brewhouse theatre in Taunton.

Taunton Town Council (TTC) has agreed to providing £105,000 each year for five years, starting in 2026.

In October last year, the theatre's future was thrown into doubt after Somerset Councilowner of the building - said it would no longer be responsible for paying for 'significant repairs', with the responsibility passing to the tenant, the Taunton Theatre Association (TTA) charity.

At the time, TTC said it would work with Somerset Council and the TTA in the hope of securing a model to protect the Brewhouse in the long-term.

Now, after a spokesperson said a "significant amount of work has since been undertaken by all parties to arrive at a fair and robust outcome", an agreement has been approved for funding.

And the new agreementincluding the funding - was agreed by TTC unanimously at a meeting on November 11.

TTTC said as part of the new agreement, TTA will provide annual reports to the Community and Place

Committee, measuring performance against five key indicators: the number of live performances, cinema events, creative workshops, community activities, and total unique visits.

Val Hammond, chair of TTA, said: "We are all delighted by the decision of Taunton Town Council to support Taunton Brewhouse with regular funding from 2026 when TTA will assume responsibility for maintaining the structure of the Theatre.

"TTA is a charity, so we are

especially grateful for this assistance in meeting our increased responsibilities for the building itself, thus enabling us to maintain our programme of live and screened performances along with a broad range of cultural activities.

"TTA and Taunton Brewhouse look forward to working closely with Taunton Town Council in the years ahead."

Councillor Tom Deakin, leader of TTC, added: "I’m delighted that we’ve reached this agreement, securing the

future of one of Taunton’s most important cultural assets.

"Taunton Brewhouse is so much more than just a theatre, it’s a place that brings people together, nurtures creativity, and provides opportunities for people of all ages."

He added: "Our partnership with Taunton Brewhouse, through initiatives such as Taunton Together, demonstrates the power of collaboration in strengthening our community and ensuring that arts and culture continue to thrive at the heart of Taunton."

MP hits out at 'racist' GB News segment

SOMERSET MP Anna Sabine (Lib Dem, Frome and East Somerset) has hit out broadcaster GB News for presenting viewers with “unverified and frankly, racist” information.

The MP has written to the chief executive of media watchdog Ofcom to request a formal investigation into a recent GB News programme, hosted by Martin Daubney, which appeared to draw a link between people with “foreign sounding names” and those in court under sex offences.

The segment was broadcast by GB news on November 10 and Ms Sabine has called on the regulator to formally investigate the claims made under Section 5.7 of the Ofcom broadcasting code which states: “Views and facts must not be misrepresented”.

In the show, Daubney and guest Marcus Johnstone presented “statistics” which claimed to show how people with “foreign-sounding names” were represented at a

proportionally higher rate than those with “British surnames” in court – particularly in instances of sexual crime.

“These statistics have not been verified and are not methodologically sound,” Ms Sabine said.

“This bogus research was based on Johnstone choosing nine crown courts and counting the number of ‘foreignsounding names’ on a given day.

“Both Daubney and Johnstone admitted that the methodology was flawed, yet still chose to broadcast these outrageous claim.”

GB News said it would not allow “politically-motivated complaints” to dictate its output.

During the broadcast, Johnstone said: “We know that the analysis based on names is not scientific. We know there’s problems with that, but it’s the best that we can get at the moment because there’s no other data being obtained.”

However, the Somerset MP said it should not have been allowed to go on the air, adding:

“Immigration and social integration are important and legitimate subjects for discussion. However, such debates must be grounded in verifiable data and handled with care to avoid misleading audiences or inflaming prejudice.

“It is deeply concerning that GB News chose to air unverified statistics that risk heightening tensions and fuelling hostility toward immigrant communities who contribute significantly to British society and our economy.”

Ms Sabine – the Lib Dem spokesperson for culture, media and sport – said the GB News figures were “unverified and frankly, racist” and demanded Ofcom hold the broadcaster to account.

“While we must support the independence of our media institutions, we hold great pride in this country in our rules around fair reporting and news based in facts and truth,” she added.

“In a world of

misinformation, it’s vital that our broadcasters and news programmes are held to a high standard of integrity and accuracy, whether that be the BBC or GB News, and that we insist upon truthfulness before any political angle.

“GB News peddled unverified and frankly racist statistics to thousands grounded in dodgy methods.

“Turning up to court and counting people with names that don’t sound British to you is no way to engage with the complex and sensitive topic of immigration.”

A GB News spokesperson said: “Unlike some other broadcasters, GB News takes its compliance seriously.

"We will never let politically motivated complaints by political parties shape our journalism.”

An Ofcom spokesperson said the watchdog was “assessing the complaints against our rules but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate” the matter further.

Gap is bridged in latest Strawberry Line expansion

THE King of Wessex Gap has been bridged!

Volunteers and locals gathered to celebrate the achievement on Friday, November 14 – part of the Strawberry Line path in Somerset.

They were joined by Somerset Council representatives at the opening of a link that bridges a section, known as the Kings of Wessex Gap, in Cheddar.

The new section, supported by funding from the council, was built by Greenways & Cycleroutes and runs from the Cheddar Leisure Centre in Station Road, around the perimeter of the Kings Academy playing field, over a new bridge across the Cheddar Yeo.

The route connects to the existing stretch of the Strawberry Line south of Cheddar and enables direct access for people living south of the Yeo to Kings Academy, Cheddar Leisure Centre, Sharpham Road sports ground, the new Bloor estate, Axbridge and Cheddar Reservoir and onto Yatton Starion for national rail access.

Councillor Ros Wyke,

associate lead member for active travel and public transport, said: “It’s fantastic to see yet another section of the Strawberry Line delivered and it represents another Active Travel initiative in Somerset – a priority for us as a council.

“The link will provide direct access to the leisure centre, and I hope this will reduce the incentive to drive there.

“Students and teachers at the school now have an off-road route directly to the school gates. Parents will be more prepared to let their children gain the independence to walk or cycle to school – good for both physical and mental health.

“I would like to thank the school, Wessex Learning Trust and the leisure centre for their enthusiasm in making this section of the Strawberry Line turn from being an ambition to a reality.”

The Strawberry Line is a traffic-free path reaching from the Mendips to the sea and has been developed between

charities, volunteers, contractors, community groups, councils, Historic Railways Estate and private landowners.

Between them contractors –both local to Cheddar – Holcim UK and Somerset Council’s highways resurfacing partner Heidelberg Materials UK have donated more than 1,200 tonnes of aggregates for the project – worth £25,000.

Simon Parkes, Heidelberg’s unit manager at Batts Combe quarry, said: “Hats off to the Trustees of the Strawberry Line for their incredible work in creating this new link.

“We know it will be valued and enjoyed by the local

community including many of our Batts Combe colleagues, so we’re thrilled to play our part in supporting the project.”

And Simon Evans, quarry manager at Holcim UK’s Callow Quarry, added: “Our team at Callow is proud to have played its part in this project. As well as donating aggregate to help reinstate and construct pathways for the Strawberry Line we also volunteered on site as a team.

“As part of the community for many years we recognise what a difference this will make for local people and we look forward to enjoying it alongside them.”

CREATIVE writers and musicians are being urged to put pen to paper – in tribute to Shepton Mallet.

The South & West Eating Disorders Association (SWEDA) is calling on creatives to pen a Song for Shepton, be it music, a poem, or story that celebrates the town.

The mental health charity has been supporting people of all ages affected by eating disorders for more than three decades.

And fundraising manager, Gavin Osborn, said he is excited by the possibilities the project creates.

“Shepton has so much going for it and a rich history of creativity, culture and community,” he said.

“Everyone who has lived here, worked here or visited has a story to tell, whether that’s school memories from Whitstone or falling in love on a walk through Collett Park.

“We want to hear them all and celebrate the town that we are proud to call our home.”

The charity is raising vital funds and awareness, while also bringing people together as part of next February’s Snowdrops Festival.

“All ages and abilities are encouraged to get involved and submit ideas, and everyone will get the chance to perform their compositions at a live event during the festival,” said Gavin.

“Participants can write a

song, story or a poem about the town or reflect on a memory of a great night out or a happy day spent in Shepton, which could then be set to music by others.

“Our Song for Shepton project is also a great chance for people to get to know SWEDA and hear more about the amazing work we do.”

Chefs showcase tastes of Exmoor

TASTY treats were the order of the day at a special event honouring culinary creativity in Exmoor.

The Exmoor Young & Aspiring Chef event took place on November 15 at West Somerset Community College, aimed at "celebrating the creativity, passion and promise of young culinary talent from across the region".

Organised by Visit Exmoor as part of its Eat Exmoor commitment and the Centre of Excellence for Hospitality, the event shone a light on West Somerset artisan suppliers and the next generation of chefs inspired by the landscapes, heritage and produce of the area.

Entrants showcased their abilities by producing memorable dishes for professional judges Phil Trevett and Rob Marshall, of Somerset Larder.

This year’s participants were Maddie Kennealy, 15, from South Molton Community College, Blake Jennings, 16, from West Somerset Community College, and Lauren Lewis, 21, from Somerset Larder.

Each will now represent young culinary arts across

Exmoor for the next twelve months, with a number of celebrations and engagements planned, including producing canapés at the Houses of Parliament, helping raise the profile of local food producers and the richness of Exmoor’s food heritage.

Trophies were presented by Rachel Gilmour, MP for Tiverton & Minehead.

Max Lawrence, of Visit Exmoor, said: "The day was a celebration of the region’s wonderful producers and the culinary talent that brings their ingredients to life. He added that the event reflects the strength of Exmoor’s food culture and the importance of supporting young people who aspire to work in the industry."

And Emma Thomasson, CEO of Visit Exmoor, added: "The event demonstrated the energy, ambition and potential of young people across the region and the vital role they will play in shaping the future of Exmoor’s hospitality and food sectors."

She highlighted the value of nurturing local talent, championing local suppliers and providing platforms where emerging chefs can grow in confidence and gain meaningful experience.

MP slams Reform comments over young people with SEND as "dangerous"

ASOMERSET MP has branded remarks made about children with special educational needs and disabilities by Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice “dangerous”.

During a press conference this week Tice, the MP for Boston and Skegness, claimed conditions such as ADHD are over-diagnosed, and that the sight of young people wearing ear defenders in classrooms was “insane”.

His comments, including a claim there is a “crisis of overdiagnosis of children with neurodiverse issues”, has prompted outrage from parents and campaigners – including Somerset MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil).

Mr Dance said Tice’s broadside was “deeply insulting to families”, and part of a narrative that risks taking the country backwards in the treatment and understanding of neurodiverse children.

“Richard Tice’s comments about so-called ‘over-diagnosis’ of children with SEND are not only wrong, they are dangerous,” he said.

“There is no crisis of over-diagnosis in this country – there is a crisis of children being missed, misunderstood, and left without help for far too long.

“Parents are not fighting for assessments because it’s fashionable. They are fighting because their children are struggling and the system is failing them.

"To suggest that families are part of the problem is deeply insulting to thousands of parents who have had to battle every step of the way to get even the most basic support.

“As someone with dyslexia and ADHD, I know exactly how life-changing the right diagnosis and help can be. It gives children confidence,

understanding, and a sense of belonging. Denying that — or belittling it — does real harm.”

During his press conference, Mr Tice said: “You’ve got to the mad situation now where children who don’t have any form of label are starting to feel left out.

“They’re feeling that in inverted commas, they’re the normal minority, it’s insane and it’s becoming a sort of school joke.”

He did not give any evidence for his claims, but added: “I’ll just raise one more point, the sight of children in classes wearing ear defenders, I’m sorry, this is just insane. It’s got to stop. The teachers want it to stop. Heads want it to stop. It’s not the right way forward.”

Many children and adults with autism exhibit a heightened sound sensitivity, meaning they can be affected by loud or recurring sounds in a more extreme way than others. For example, many autistic people struggle when around sounds like a vacuum cleaner, or hand dryers.

To combat the impact of their sound sensitivity, many choose to wear ear defenders to lessen the noise. It is this that Mr Tice seems to have a problem with.

The National Autistic Society explained it by saying: “If you are hyper-sensitive, sounds may seem much louder and sudden noises may be more distressing to you than they are to other people.

“You may avoid loud places, cover your ears when you hear noise (this is known as ‘sensory-avoiding behaviour’) and become distressed by unexpected noises or if your environment is too loud for too long.

“You may also enjoy your sensitivity to pleasing sounds.”

The NAS said research suggests between 53% and 95% of autistic people experience sensory processing difficulties.

“People often describe sensory processing differences as ‘sensory issues’ or, for hyper-sensitivity, as ‘sensory sensitivity’,” the charity added.

Joey Nettleton Burrows, of the NAS, added: “Parents aren’t profiting from the education system, they are spending time and money fighting against a broken Send system, just to get the most basic support at school.

“Claiming there is ‘overdiagnosis’ couldn’t be further from the truth. The system needs reform to meet the needs of all children, so that

Send children, including autistic young people, can access a suitable school place and thrive.

“Spreading these kinds of lies stigmatises autistic people and makes life harder for them and their families.”

Mr Tice’s comments come as Reform-run local authorities – who fund social care, which can include people with autism and other SEND –struggle to make spending cuts promised ahead of local elections which saw them elected.

But Mr Dance rejected the claims made by the Reform figurehead, adding: “Reform UK’s approach would take our country backwards. It risks a return to a time when children were punished for behaviours they could not control, written off as ‘difficult’, or pushed out of classrooms instead of being supported. That is not the future our children deserve.

“We need early screening, proper teacher training, fair funding, and compassion, not rhetoric that stokes division and undermines vulnerable children.

“I will keep fighting for a system that lifts children up, recognises their strengths, and gives every young person the chance to thrive. Reform’s vision does the opposite.”

Mr Dance warned that Reform UK’s rhetoric risks reversing progress on inclusion and SEND support in schools, as he leads work in Parliament to improve support for neurodiverse children, including calling for universal screening in primary schools, mandatory teacher training on neurodiversity, and fairer SEND funding.

Students discover history on their doorstep

HISTORY students transferred their learning to the real world during a site visit in Glastonbury.

Year 8 pupils from Crispin School, in Street, visited a piece of industrial history on their doorstep.

They linked their classroom learning about the Industrial Revolution to local industries in Somerset, visiting the Morlands and Baily’s: Industry and Community in Glastonbury and Street project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and based at the Red Brick Building in Glastonbury. There, they learned about important Somerset industries such as sheepskin and leather production, cheesemaking, mining, brickmaking and the peat industry.

Project co-ordinator Alison Horgan teamed up with Crispin head of history David Mason to introduce the day to the whole year group.

Students then spent the morning investigating how they could use oral histories, photographs and maps to deepen their historical understanding of what it was like to work in various industries in Somerset, and why these industries were - and in some cases still are - essential to the county’s economy and community.

They also had the chance to handle objects such as sheepskin boots, letters and copies of Morlands Magazines and think about the stories associated with these artefacts.

Mr Mason encouraged the students to think about how historical topics that they study as part of the curriculum have a local, and often personal connection. "History isn’t just about kings and battles," he said. "It is also about the people, places and stories that built the world right here on our doorstep."

Mrs Horgan highlighted how many students would have family connections with the industries explored and that several of the primary sources had never been studied before.

As a follow up to the day, a group of the Year 8 students will visit the Heritage Cafe in November to chat with older people from our community who worked at Morlands and Baily’s.

The day was part of a larger industrial history project that will be running until October 2026 at the Red Brick Building.

Other activities include a successful monthly Heritage Cafe for people who have an interest in or connection to Morlands or Baily’s, primary school activities and visits to organisations such as Scout groups and care homes.

Volunteers from GWS Radio have been working on recording some interviews with people who go to the Heritage Cafe.

In addition, a small secure archive is being created at the Red Brick Building where all artefacts donated will be organised and stored safely.

Mrs Horgan added: "We are so grateful to The National Lottery Heritage Fund whose support has made this project possible.

"We believe it is vital to preserve, celebrate and share our industrial heritage and that

working with younger people is a fantastic way to foster local pride and create a sense of belonging."

The Red Brick Building, originally part of the Morlands sheepskin factory, is now a community and arts hub with a prize-winning community garden.

Yeovil Probus club welcomes new members after a successful year

TWO new members were admitted to the Probus Club of Yeovil at its recent AGM.

The group gathered at the Quicksilver Mail on November 10, with the existing Committee re-elected – but with the addition of two new members.

Chair, David Parsons, highlighted the successful year they had with excellent guest speakers and interesting visits.

Although Probus is a club for retired professional and business people they also hold a number of events throughout the year when wives and partners are invited.

At every lunch they have a charity collection and this year it was donated to Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Sarah Armstrong, from the charity, was present to receive a donation of £620.

After thanking the members, she gave a brief outline on how the organisation helped people and their families cope with this serious neurological disease.

“Next year, Yeovil Probus has already got a full programme of speakers and are looking forward to another exciting year,” a spokesperson said.

The group meets once a month at the Quicksilver Mail, Hendford Hill, to listen to a guest speaker followed by lunch, in “a very friendly atmosphere for like-minded retired gentlemen”.

The first meeting of 2026 is on January 12 at the Quicksilver Mail, starting at 11am. Details are available online at https://yeovilprobus.com.

WORK is progressing ahead of the reopening of a landmark Somerset pub.

The Candlelight Inn, at Bishopswood, in the Blackdown Hills near Chard, is gearing up to welcome guests from November 30 with a soft launch, before fully re-opening in January.

The new owners are Maddie Beaumont and Ben Porter, who met at the pub in 2015, and have returned with pub company Redefined Hospitality to breathe

new life into the Candlelight.

In May, the pub permanently closed, citing the impact of the A303 closures and rising costs.

The new owners are also behind the nearby awardwinning Cotley Inn, at Wambrook, and are promising to bring The Candlelight “back to life”.

“After a short closure, we’re opening a fresh new chapter, rooted in everything you’ve always loved about this special place,” they said.

UK 'most expensive in the world' for nuclear, says report

A GOVERNMENT review reveals the UK is the "most expensive place in the world" to build nuclear power plants - as work at Hinkley Point C in Somerset continues.

The report, commissioned by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, calls for a "one-stop shop" for nuclear decisions amid spiralling and costly bureaucracy which it said has seen the industry decline in recent years.

Hinkley Point C, near Cannington, is set to start operating in the early 2030s, while Sizewell C is also set to operate in the 2030s as the UK government looks to build a new generation of nuclear plants to meet the country's future energy needs and net zero targets.

Smaller nuclear power stations are also set to be built in a bid to cut

building times, with the report calling for planning to be streamlined, as well as rules over radiation exposure levels for workers.

Taskforce chair, John Fingleton, said: "Our solutions are radical, but necessary. By simplifying regulation, we can maintain or enhance safety standards while finally delivering nuclear capacity safely, quickly, and affordably."

Lib Dems mark successful year at AGM

LIBERAL Democrats in Taunton and Wellington celebrated a “formidable and effective” year for the party.

More than 130 party members gathered for its annual meeting on November 14, at Taunton Rugby Club.

John Wakefield, chair, told the meeting work to promote the Liberal Democrat message was more important than ever.

He spoke of highlights during the past 12 months, including the opening of permanent offices in Taunton’s Tower Lane, shared with MP Gideon Amos, as well as by-election victories on Somerset Council, Taunton Town Council and Wellington Town Council.

“These results indicate that we are on a bit of a roll but we definitely can’t be complacent,” said Mr Wakefield.

“They show how formidable and effective we are as a party when we all come together.

“Our Liberal Democrat values are very much alive and kicking.”

Presentations made at the AGM came in the form of the Tim Pugsley Award for individual achievement, to Paul Adams; top deliverer, to Angela Ashley; and top canvasser, to Cllr Tom Deakin.

Three Lib Dem MPs were speakers at the dinner which

followed the meeting – Gideon Amos, Rachel Gilmour (Tiverton and Minehead) and Roz Savage (South Cotswolds).

Dr Savage also holds four Guinness World Records for ocean rowing and told of her exploits in becoming the first woman to row solo across three oceans.

Have your say in Youth Parliament polls

YOUNG people in Somerset are being urged to elect their representatives in the UK Youth Parliament.

The Somerset Youth Parliament elections are underway, with young people being encouraged to cast their vote to elect three Members of Youth Parliament, to each run on a campaign of their choice.

Candidates have produced manifestos outlining their election pledges, which can be viewed online at somersetyouthparliament.org. uk/elections.

Elected Members of Youth Parliament debate, campaign for, and influence important decisions, working with community representatives and politicians to make change and identify opportunities to create better outcomes for children and young people across the county.

This is a unique chance to represent the voice and interests of local young people across Somerset and at a national level.

Members of Youth Parliament represent Somerset’s young people and their interests. They go to school, college or a youth club in the county and campaign both locally and nationally on the issues

that young people are passionate about.

Emma Brown, Somerset Member of Youth Parliament, said: “The running, voting and the election of members of Youth Parliament gives young people the power to create real change and make our mark. Get involved, you will not regret it.”

Members of Youth Parliament are supported by an Advisory Group of self-selected young people from all backgrounds, who bring a range of experiences, opinions and abilities with them. The group is free to join, it’s fun, interesting and always welcomes new people.

Find out more information at somersetyouthparliament.org.uk/elections.

Voting in the elections closes on Monday, December 15.

The evening concluded with an auction conducted by Cllr Derek Perry.

One-in-10 Somerset drivers say they would fail their test today: Survey

MORE than one-in-10 drivers in Somerset believe they would fail their driving test if they took it today, according to a new survey.

To mark Road Safety Week, a Specsavers poll found that nearly 39% of drivers in the area fear they’d be marked down for their inability to parallel park, while 11% admit they are confused by new road signs and driving laws.

Elsewhere, a lack of awareness around vision requirements also contributes, with just 14% of drivers describing their understanding of the UK’s eyesight rules for motorists as ‘excellent’, and 12% of those without perfect vision believe their years of driving experience compensate for not being able to see clearly.

Simon Simmonds, a director at Specsavers Minehead, said: "There are some places you should never be if you’re worried about your eyesight, and behind the wheel is one of them, especially at this time of year when we’re often driving in wet and dark conditions, because we have to be so careful.

"And not only when it comes to other vehicles – pedestrians, cyclists and even pets can dart in front of our cars in the blink of an eye."

The study also found potholes, or changes to the road surface, are the most common things motorists in the south west struggled to see while driving (26%), while 18% have failed to spot cyclists in blind spots or low light, and 13% have had difficulty making out

lane markings, and 15% admitted they struggle to see anything at all when it’s raining.

As a result, 50% of drivers in the region believe eyesight checks should be a mandatory part of renewing a UK driving licence.

A further 32% don’t think poor vision is treated seriously enough as a road safety issue, and 13% have worried about someone else’s eyesight while being driven by them.

When struggling to see properly behind the wheel, 45% of drivers in the south west have simply slowed down and hoped for the best, while 27% have avoided driving at night altogether.

Of the 57% of motorists in the region who are supposed to wear glasses or contact lenses while driving, 23% admitted to going without them. The most common reasons were forgetting them (40%), only travelling a short distance (40%), or finding them uncomfortable (15%).

Simon added: "If you do need prescription glasses or contacts to drive, you should

always wear them regardless of the journey.

"It’s been reported that most traffic accidents happen close to the person’s home, as that’s naturally where they do the most driving.

"So even if you’re only going

half a mile up the road, you should do all you can to keep yourself and others safe."

Making a raised bed...

SOON, while the summer garden is sleeping, it will be time to work out plans for next year.

After a summer of intense heat, it is tempting to think our climate has changed to a drier, hotter one. But, as the weather pundits tell us, it could equally be wetter and stormier.

On heavy ground, one answer is to raise the soil level of the borders. Raised beds are not just a relief to aching backs, they enhance healthy growth. Water in general retains its temperature longer than the surrounding air, and this applies to soil water. Wet soil could mean a later start to spring, and well-drained, dry soils warm up sooner.

We could take a tip from a great garden designer, Piet Oudolf, who raised all the borders of the new garden, Oudolf Field, that he designed

around the Hauser & Wirth art gallery in Bruton, Somerset. The soil was heavy, wet clay, so lifting the level of all the borders was well worth the extreme effort.

First, it is important to improve the drainage by breaking it up with a fork to prevent the formation of a ‘pan’

– an impermeable, solid layer. Then add plenty of grit and sharp sand loosely mixed with topsoil, to the desired depth. Consolidate this and prevent the invasion of weeds, by laying plain cardboard over the whole area, and covering it with a mixture of well-rotted manure and mushroom compost. By the time winter has worked its

magic and spring has returned, you should have an area that will be perfect for planting. The edges of the bed could be formally enclosed or left to drift into the surrounding paths. Small, formal beds are usually best framed with an edge, to accentuate their shape, and prevent the soil from washing away in a torrential downpour.

At Oudolf Field, the edges are left proud of the surrounding paths and well planted to prevent erosion. The loose, relaxed feel to the planting is Piet Oudolf’s intention. And the year-round beauty of all those plants thriving in the correct conditions brings a contented smile to every visitor, and gardener.

Eco award for Somerset scheme to recycle electrical items

ASOMERSET scheme that helps people recycle and reuse electrical and electronic items has scooped a top international award.

The Fixy project, which sees a van travel around the county collecting items for recycling and reuse, has been awarded an International Green Apple Environment Award, in recognition of its outstanding contribution to environmental sustainability and community engagement.

Managed by circular economy experts Resource Futures, in partnership with Somerset Council and DonateIT, Fixy was selected from more than 700 global entries and honoured at a prestigious ceremony at the House of Lords in London on Monday (November 17).

The award celebrates Fixy’s innovative approach to one of the UK’s fastest-growing waste streams: electrical and electronic waste (WEEE), the awards said.

The Fixy van hit the road in 2022, and has sparked more than 8,700 conversations with residents and prevented more than 13,400 tonnes of electrical items from ending up in landfill or incineration.

“Winning a Green Apple Award is a huge honour and a powerful endorsement of Fixy’s mission to empower communities to embrace electrical repair and reuse and make it accessible to everyone,” said Linda Hull, Fixy project co-ordinator.

“It’s a celebration of the communities we’ve worked with, our dedicated partners, and the thousands of devices we’ve saved from waste.”

Research shows only 33% of UK residents feel confident about how to recycle their electricals, and in Somerset, 71% of Fixy participants had never come across a repair group before.

Co-designed by Somerset Council, Resource Futures, and DonateIT, Fixy is entirely grant funded – with initial funding from Ecosurety (2022–2023), followed by Material Focus’ Electricals Recycling Fund (2023–2024), and bridge funding provided by Somerset Council and SUEZ which has kept Fixy’s wheels in motion in between grants.

In 2025, the project has continued to thrive

thanks to ongoing funding from the Hinkley Point C Community Fund and the National Lottery’s Awards for All.

Fixy has also supported the creation of three repair groups, enabled electricals recycling trials in flatted properties, and helped bridge the digital divide by redistributing refurbished devices to those in digital poverty.

The Green Apple Award puts Fixy among the world’s leading environmental initiatives.

“This Award energises us to keep expanding Fixy’s reach and impact across the UK,” said

Charlie Eddisford, communities lead at Resource Futures.

“We’re excited about the opportunities this recognition brings to deepen our impact on addressing the national e-waste challenge – especially the opportunity to work with forward-thinking funders and businesses who share our commitment to sustainability.”

Yeovil players back blood pressure event

PLAYERS from Yeovil Town Football Club joined a match-day effort encouraging fans to have their blood pressure checked.

While performances on the pitch might raise blood pressure at Huish Park, away from the action, members of Somerset Council’s Public Health team and NHS Somerset were at the ground to give supporters, visitors and match-goers a free check over.

Dozens of fans took a moment to ‘Know Their Numbers’, alongside the Mayor of Yeovil, the club’s owner and several Yeovil Town players, who all stepped forward to get their blood pressure checked and highlight the importance of looking after your health.

“High blood pressure is often called the silent killer, as it rarely shows symptoms but significantly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. A

quick, simple test can be lifesaving,” an event spokesperson said.

Supporters were able to drop in before kick-off to learn more about their heart health, pick up resources and find out how to borrow a blood pressure monitor for free from any Somerset library or get checked at their GP or local pharmacy.

“We were also joined by colleagues from the Public Health SmokeFree Somerset team, who were on hand to promote the free stop-smoking support available across Somerset – helping people take the next step towards a healthier, smokefree future,” the spokesperson added.

Councillor Graham Oakes, lead member for public health at the council, said:

Vaccination catch-up clinics for children in Bridgwater

CHILDREN who have missed their flu vaccination can get the jab at upcoming clinics being held in Bridgwater.

Anyone from reception to year 11 who missed their school vaccination can attend the sessions, with no appointment needed.

NHS Somerset is running the clinics, which will be held at Bridgwater Community Hospital, in Bower Lane:

n December 6: From 9.30am to 2.30pm n December 16: From 2pm to 5pm

"If you'd prefer to choose if your child has the nasal spray or the injection, just chat to the team on the day," a spokesperson said.

For more information, visit https://nhssomerset.nhs.uk/ my-health/staying-well/ flu-vaccination.

“Football brings our community together – so it’s the perfect place to spark conversations

about health.

“We were delighted to see fans, players and local leaders all taking part. Knowing your numbers is one of the simplest and most powerful things you can do for your long-term health. It’s also a great time to quit smoking and our team will always be there to help.”

The event was part of the wider Take the Pressure Off campaign, delivered by Public Health Somerset and NHS Somerset, encouraging people across the county to check their blood pressure regularly and stay well.
