Yeovil's giant charity shop marks 10 years in historic spot
ADECADE after opening, a landmark charity shop in Yeovil – developed in the shell of a former town cinema – has become a thriving social hub.
The St Margaret’s Hospice charity shop at the Art Deco Old Cinema building spans three floors and dozens of rooms, offering everything from clothes, to books, to furniture.
And to mark the milestone anniversary, the team has unveiled a full refurbishment of the top floor, giving the clearance area a new look and a lease of life.
Barclays volunteers and the Wickes Community Programme – who donated £100 in supplies – have helped the space be made over, including being repainted in calming shades of teal and blue.
“The impact was immediate: in the first few days after reopening, the floor saw sales rise by around £100 per week
– no small feat when most items sell for just a few pounds,” said a spokesperson.
Darrell Symonds, shop manager at The Old Cinema, said: “When we opened, there were people who thought Yeovil didn’t need another charity shop — but here we are, 10 years later, thriving.
“This place means so much to the community, and the top floor transformation shows just how far we’ve come. I couldn’t be prouder of our team and the volunteers who’ve made it happen.”
Over the past decade, The Old Cinema has become a social hub, she said, working with organisations like Abri Group, YMCA, and SSAFA, to provide essential furniture and household items to families in need.
It has also pioneered the involvement of Community Payback volunteers, offering mentoring and skills

development to people seeking a second chance.
Susan Kerber, head of retail at St Margaret’s Hospice, added: “The Old Cinema’s success is a brilliant reminder of what can happen when people believe in something and stick with it.
“Those early headlines couldn’t have been more wrong; this shop has become part of the fabric of Yeovil. It’s proof that community spirit and compassion can transform not just a building, but lives.”
The team is now looking for more volunteers to join them – particularly to help look after the newly refurbished top floor.
“It’s such a lovely space

now,” said Darrell. “We’d love to welcome some new faces to help us keep it looking its best. Even a few hours a week makes a huge difference – and it’s a great way to meet people and give something back.”

Firefighters were sent to the scene, in the Hamp area, at around 11.15pm after reports of black smoke coming from the site.
“On arrival, crews confirmed multiple vehicles well alight,” a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.
Extra crews were sent to the scene, they said, with teams from Taunton, Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Street and Martock joining the effort.
At around 1am, firefighters were still battling the blaze, with water being taken from the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. And at 2am, crews were “damping down hotspots” before declaring the fire extinguished at just after 3am.
“There was at total of 39 vehicles totally destroyed by the fire and the cause of the fire is being investigated,” the spokesperson added.

Vandals targeted town play area
AFIRE was started deliberately at a Bridgwater play park, according to town officials.
Bridgwater Town Council praised the swift actions of CCTV operators after they spotted and reported a fire beneath the climbing frame in the children’s play area at Northgate Yard on Wednesday, November 12.
The council said operators in the CCTV control room spotted the fire in real time and alerted the emergency services, enabling the fire service to respond within minutes.
“Thanks to their rapid
intervention, the smouldering fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread or cause significant damage,” a council spokesperson said.
They said the site was then inspected and cleaned, with the play equipment safe and fully accessible.
Councillor Tim Mander, chair of the Amenities Committee, said: “We are appalled by these senseless acts of vandalism, but we are immensely proud of the vigilance shown by the CCTV team and the swift response from the fire service.
“Their quick actions
prevented what could have been a far more serious incident. Our parks should be safe havens for children and families, and we will continue to do everything possible to protect and maintain them.”
Northgate Yard remains open to the public and the council said they will continue to monitor the area closely to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all.

320 new homes for Bridgwater
MORE than 320 new homes are set to be built in Bridgwater.
Developer Persimmon
Homes Severn Valley has secured a resolution to grant planning permission for 323 homes south of Quantock Road, in the west of the town.
Somerset Council’s North Area Planning Committee backed the company’s hybrid application, which includes detailed plans for the first 111 homes on the initial phase of the development.
A detailed planning application will follow for the second phase, of 212 properties, Persimmon said, following the previous approval of outline plans.
The homes – a mixture of two, three, and four-bed houses – will be “zero carbon-ready, while 10% of them will be reserved for a local housing association to help tackle the council’s housing waiting list”, Persimmon said.
The approval also orders financial contributions from Persimmon, including £2 million for education services and £2m for the council to deliver off-site affordable housing.
Another £479,000 will also go towards off-site highway

improvements, £18,000 for a travel plan, and £22,250 for a neighbourhood centre.
Meanwhile, a Community Infrastructure Levy payment of £514,171 will be made as part of the first phase, and another £1,016,691 should Phase Two receive full permission.
Two play areas, one on each phase, are also included in the plans, as well as “sustainable drainage solutions”, the retention of trees and hedgerow boundaries, and a dark corridor, with pedestrian links throughout, the firm said.
Persimmon Homes Severn Valley managing director, Claire Burton, added: “We are delighted to secure planning committee approval from Somerset Council for our
application to bring muchneeded new homes to Bridgwater.
“Our development at Quantock Road will be a huge boost to housing supply in the area and deliver substantial investment in local services and infrastructure improvements.
“Persimmon is very pleased to have worked constructively and intensively with the local authority to ensure our community contributions work in the best interests of local people.
“We look forward to starting construction of phase one, bringing forward our reserved matters application for phase two, and leaving a positive and lasting legacy in west Bridgwater.”
Troubled care home site set to re-open in 2026

WORK is underway to bring a purpose-built but barely-used care home in Wincanton into use.

“Located in Wincanton, this luxurious new home has superior standards of design and interior finishes,” Bupa said.
“With smart technology and thoughtful spaces, it’s a place for connection and comfort.”
The healthcare firm touts 73 en-suite bedrooms at the property, “equipped to meet a range of care needs”.
In September last year, your Leveller revealed how the home was closing having only ever welcomed four tenants under previous owner, Cornerstone Healthcare.
The £10 million facility was put up for sale after a troubled birth – with work coming to a halt in 2022 amid the collapse of construction firm, Midas.

Drugs, guns and boats... How a £26.5m cocaine plot was foiled off Somerset coast
THREE men who were caught collecting more than £26 million worth of cocaine of the coast of Somerset have been jailed.
The trio claimed to have been selling a Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) off Watchet in July, but were actually collecting cocaine from a ship.
Now, they have been sentenced after being uncovered during an operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).
Craig Nuttall, 51, and his brother, 47-year-old Raymond Nuttall, both from Preston, arrived at Watchet Marina on July 23.
The pair provided details of an RHIB named Guzzla and told the marina manager they planned to be in the area for a few days to fish.
On the evening of July 30, they were joined by Greek national Anestis Tsepa, 24, from Thessalonika, and 38-year-old Albanian national, Melios Delvina.
Raymond Nuttall was seen to drive a van down the quayside before removing two jerry cans and a hose from the rear.
By 8.46pm, Craig Nuttall, Tsepa and Delvina were in the RHIB wearing lifejackets and heading out to sea.
Audio messages later discovered on Tsepa’s device showed they took the boat out to sea and were organising an at

sea drop off (ASDO), where a larger vessel, otherwise known as a mother ship, is believed to have dropped illegal drugs into the sea to be collected by a smaller boat.
In the background of the messages, the Guzzla’s engine can be heard as they travel, discussing how long it will take their smaller, daughter vessel to arrive, clarifying which mother vessel they should follow and that they were now ready, waiting for that larger vessel to

give a signal.
They returned to the marina at 1am and began to try to connect the boat to a trailer that Raymond Nuttall had driven down the slipway.
However, NCA officers stepped in and arrested the four men on suspicion of importation of Class A drugs.
The Guzzla was searched and found to contain a large number of bale-sized packages that had been stored along the floor and between the seats.
In total, there were 14 packages, containing a further 322 smaller packages weighing a kilo each.
The substance inside was tested and found to be cocaine with an 89% purity. The drugs would be worth £26.5 million at street level.
A firearm was also discovered in the boat.
The Nuttalls and Tsepa provided no comment responses to NCA officers in interview.
Delvina gave a prepared statement in which he said he
was unemployed and took work to unload items from a boat into a van with no knowledge of the drugs inside.
The Nuttalls pleaded guilty to importation of cocaine at Taunton Crown Court on August 29, with Tsepa and Delvina admitting the same charges on September 5. Tsepa also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Raymond Nuttall, Craig Nuttall were sentenced to 11-years-and-three-months and 11-years-and-two-months respectively, while Anestis Tsepa was given a 16-year jail term at the same court on Thursday (November 13).
Melios Delvina is due to be sentenced on December 11.
NCA regional head of investigations, Gavin Webb, said: "These men were working as part of an organised crime group, using the cover of darkness to collect a significant amount of cocaine that would have ended up on the streets of the UK.
"They were fuelled by greed – if their attempt had been successful it would have netted them millions of pounds in profit. The presence of a firearm in the boat shows the levels they were willing to go to with their offending.
"The NCA is confronting and dealing with at-sea drugs drop-offs as a priority to ensure illegal drugs do not make it to UK shores. Dedicated Officers from the NCA were aided by, and are grateful for, the vital support of, our partners in Border Force, the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit, Avon and Somerset Police and Devon and Cornwall Police. These criminals are now behind bars."
Two men, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were charged in relation to the same seizure on November 6.
A firearm was also found on the boat by police

Cats saved from Somerton landfill site
THESE adorable kittens were brought to safety from a Somerset landfill site.
The hungry, dying kittens were saved from the Westcombe Waste site in Somerton after they were discovered in a house-high woodpile.
Staff at the Somertonfield Road site reached out to Cats
Protection Yeovil for help with feral cats at the waste and recycling centre after they found two unwell kittens and rushed them to the vet.
Sadly, the duo did not survive, but Rebecca Dawson, coordinator for the volunteerrun branch, soon arrived to assist with the remaining cats, not expecting to find any more kittens, setting up security cameras and humane traps to track and trap feral felines.
Initially spotting purely adult cats, Rebecca prioritised vet care and new outdoor homes for two pregnant cats and one limping female, named Stumpy, who was missing a paw.
It wasn’t until Rebecca returned for the next wave of cats that a high-pitched meow caught her attention.
To her surprise, the cries led her to a huge pile of wood that was waiting to be sorted – and four black-and-white kittens.
“Stretching out behind the pile was a water treatment pool with rubber protective sides, ideal for waste management but potentially deadly to curious kittens," she said. “I returned to the other side of the pile and flung kippers across the wood, hoping to guide them away

from the pool and onto a bridge that I quickly made down from the pile.”
The kittens were too scared to venture out but Rebecca recorded their frantic meows and played the sound from out of sight. With more kippers in a nearby trap, the bravest kitten, now named Jack, led the quartet into the trap, but ran out to let them eat while he kept watch.
“I knew that was my only chance to get them, so I held my breath as Jack ran off but I played the recording again and thankfully his siblings’ recorded meows brought him back,” Rebecca added. “He checked they were all safe and eventually joined them inside the trap for food and I had caught them at last.”
The one female and three

male kittens were five to six weeks old, malnourished and riddled with fleas and worms. Jack, Jill, Skip and Marley, as they have been named, were all suffering from diarrhoea from worms and their time outside and it was not certain
they would survive.
“We really weren’t sure Jack would make it. He’d been so brave and acted like the mum for his siblings but was no more than a baby,” Rebecca said.
“After plenty of TLC and two weeks of specialist food, he’s now a lively, healthy kitten and all four love nothing more than playing together and making mischief.
“I’m so grateful to the lads on site and Sophie the manager, they have really worked with me to help the cats and we just have around four or five of the remaining male cats to trap and neuter.
"I think everyone was surprised that there were around 20 cats in total, they’d kept themselves well hidden.”
n Details for Jack, Jill, Skip and Marley will be posted at www.cats.org.uk/yeovil when they are ready for adoption.

AI cameras at accident blackspot detected hundreds of offences during trial
AI CAMERAS logged more than 4,500 offences on the A361 Frome Bypass during a fourmonth trial at the accident blackspot.
The high-tech cameras were installed by Somerset Council and Avon and Somerset Police after a number of serious –including fatal – crashes on the stretch.
Part of an ongoing package of measures to improve safety on the road, the state-of-the-art devices picked up more than 4,500 offences between March and July 2025, including 4,407 incidents of no seat belt being worn, 74 speeding offences clocked at more than 80mph and 119 instances of mobile phone use.
The speed limit on the road is currently 60mph and as part of a road safety initiative, could be reduced to 50mph.
Used by about 15,000 vehicles a day, the road has sadly seen six fatalities in the last five years – four of them between 2023 and 2024.
Meanwhile, a partnership between Somerset Council’s Road Safety Team and Avon and Somerset Police is also developing a road safety engineering scheme.

Currently the subject of a feasibility study, the scheme could include a lower speed limit along with markings and other in-built safety features, with work starting in late 2026.
In the meantime, AI cameras will continue to operate on the road.
Inspector Matt Boiles, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “AI technology is helping us to identify unsafe driving behaviours that too often lead to tragedy. The number of offences recorded on the Frome Bypass

is deeply concerning and shows that too many drivers are still taking unnecessary risks.
“This partnership approach allows us to combine enforcement with education and long-term road safety improvements. Every offence captured represents a potential life saved if that driver changes their behaviour.”
Last autumn, following the latest serious incidents, Somerset Council’s Highways Team carried out urgent work on the A361/A361 junction, including refurbishing lining, an upgrade of junction warning signs, introduction of STOP signs instead of Give Way, and an extension of the double white line systems on both approaches to the junction.
Lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “We share the concerns of the community about the number of incidents on this stretch of road. That is why we are working in partnership with Avon and Somerset Police to try to improve safety.
“AI cameras are part of a package of measures – we will also be working with police to
put together an engineering scheme which could include a reduced speed limit as well as other measures.
“Driver behaviour contributes to around 90 per cent of serious road collisions and these figures are shocking.
"We would urge all drivers – if you are getting behind the wheel of a car please act responsibly.
"Remember it is not just your life you are risking but the lives of other road users."
Reacting to the details of the camera trial, MP Anna Sabine (Lib Dem, Frome & East Somerset), said: "I am relived and encouraged to hear that a change to the speed limit is now being taken into consideration.
"This is an incredibly dangerous stretch of road, which has had far too many collisions and near misses to be considered an acceptable roadway for the public.
"When I first campaigned on this having just come into office last year, drastic changes like this seemed a long way off, so I am so pleased to see that the AI camera initiative will potentially lead to real changes being made so we can all feel safer driving."

Frome council vacancy
A FROME councillor is standing down for personal reasons – creating a vacancy on the town authority.
Max Wide, who has served on Frome Town Council as councillor for Park Ward since 2022, is standing down.

Ahead of the next full town council election in 2027, a by-election could be called if enough people ask for one.
FTC said Cllr Wide supported devolution at the authority, a well as being “instrumental” in establishing the Vale of Frome Local Community Network, which he went on to chair.
Chair and leader of FTC, Fiona Barrows, said: “On behalf of all councillors I’d like to thank Max for the contribution that he has made to the council over the last three and half years.
“He has brought valuable expertise and experience in local government. He has particularly been instrumental in shaping our response to the new unitary council, the Vale of Frome LCN as Chair and navigating devolution. We are sad to lose him, but understand his reasons and wish him well.
“It is an exciting time for us as a council as devolution continues to offer opportunities, and we implement an improvement programme to ensure we remain a bold and effective council. We will now take some time to identify an excellent candidate should Park Ward ask for an election – who we will otherwise co-opt for our remaining 18 months in office.”

Staff trek effort raises thousands for charity

ATEAM from a Somerset caravan firm completed an epic trek - paying homage to a similar effort four decades ago.
As part of Highbridge Caravans' 60th anniversary celebrations, staff took on the
challenge of completing a non-stop journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats in under 24 hours.
The feat was recreating a similar effort undertaken by founder worker Gordon in 1981, who made the same journey towing a caravan, raising £680 for St John Ambulance.

Now, 44 years later, a team from the firm has raised more than £11,000 for Children's Hospice South West (CHSW) by completing the journey in a motorhome.
Along the way, the team visited Highbridge Caravans' two retail sites, symbolically connecting the company’s past, present, and future.
The charity is close to the company’s heart and particularly meaningful to Mrs Davies, the mother of one of Highbridge’s directors, whose fundraising group has raised £170,000 for the hospice over the years.
A Highbridge Caravan Centre spokesperson said: "We are feeling a mix of excitement, pride, and pure relief as we finally reach the finish line.
"It’s been an unforgettable 24 hours. We’re so proud to have achieved this challenge together and to have raised funds for such a great cause along the way."
Lucie Perryman, area fundraiser for CHSW, added: "The team at Highbridge Caravans are incredible. Their amazing fundraising will make a big difference to the families in our care, and we can’t thank them enough for doing this challenge in aid of CHSW."
The 2025 challenge also carried historical significance for the Highbridge team.

Man, 54, jailed over messages to children
BRIDGWATER man
Andrew Cobb has been jailed after trying to message underage children for a sexual purpose - having been convicted of similar offences in 2011.
The 54-year-old, of Monmouth Street, Bridgwater, was sentenced to six years and seven months behind bars when he appeared at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse, on Friday (November 14).
He was also made subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
Cobb pleaded guilty to 15 offences including making indecent images of a child, engaging in sexual communications with a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
In April 2023, he had been messaging someone online who he believed to be a 13-year-old girl and was arrested in June that year, with several of his electronic devices seized, when officers discovered the true extent of his criminality.
The examination uncovered

several persistent, manipulative conversations with at least nine children including requests for images and discussions around sexual activity, the court was told. In several cases, it was found he had initiated the conversation and sought to build trust and secrecy, often framing the interactions as a private relationship or mentorship.
The court was told Cobb committed similar offences in
2011 and had been ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years, stopping in 2021 before his recent offending started.
Officer in the case, DC Benn Murphy, said: “This case exposes the calculated and relentless nature of Cobb’s online child exploitation.
“He deliberately targeted vulnerable children, manipulated them for his own gratification, and showed utter

disregard for the harm he caused. His guilty plea reflects the overwhelming evidence built against him.
“We will not hesitate to pursue offenders like Cobb and bring them to justice. Protecting children is one of our absolute priorities, and we will do everything in our power to ensure those who prey on them are identified, stopped and prosecuted.”
Appeal after woman forced into car by man
A WOMAN was forced into a car during incidents in and around Wells – and police want to trace witnesses to what happened.
The incidents, on Tuesday, September 30, initially unfolded in the Clifton area of Bristol.
Police said in the late afternoon that day the victim, in her 30s, was forced into a silver Peugeot 207 by a man.
He was challenged by a nearby member of the public who shouted at him.
Later that evening, while the same car was stopped on the A39 at Coxley, near Wells, the victim and the man exited the car before the man attempted to force the victim into it again.
However, he drove off without her when several cars pulled up behind.
A short while later, in Coxley, the car was driven at the victim before the man again forced the victim into the car before driving off.
There were a number of vehicles passing at the time.
The car was then driven to the small car park in Rowdens Road, Wells, where the victim shouted for help towards three members of the public before she was dragged away by the man.
The man then ran off while the victim was helped by those three men, who gave her a lift away from the area and to safety. They were driving a black saloon and detectives are keen to speak to them as they believe they could be key witnesses.
DC Kirsty Richards said: “This was a truly shocking series of incidents and we’ve carried out a significant amount of work, including reviewing CCTV footage and carrying out house-to-house enquiries, since it was reported to make sure the victim is safe and that the man is identified and brought to justice.
“We believe there’s no wider risk to the
public; this incident involved two people who were known to each other. The victim is being supported by specialist officers.
“Our investigation has identified a number of people who may have witnessed parts of this incident or the car involved and we want to speak to them.
“We are particularly keen to speak to the person who bravely attempted to intervene in Bristol, any drivers who saw anything in Coxley, and the three men who helped the victim in Wells.
“We believe they could have information that could be vitally important to our investigation and I would urge them to get in contact with us as soon as they can.”

Leonardo workers go on strike
HUNDREDS of Leonardo workers walked out at Leonardo in Yeovil amid a pay dispute.
Members of the Unite union went on strike after rejecting a revised pay offer from the aerospace firm.
They took to the picket line on Wednesday and Thursday today (November 12 and 13), as they call for an increased pay offer.
Members voted to take industrial action after an initial 3.2% increase was turned down, followed by a revised off of 3.6%, which they also rejected.
Ahead of the walkout, Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: “Leonardo workers are highly skilled and work on critical defence and aerospace systems yet are being short-changed by a company making billions.
“Leonardo continues to try and penny-pinch rather than

make a sensible offer workers can accept. Our members have the full support of Unite in their fight for decent pay.”
In response, Leonardo said it hoped to continue negotiations with the union.
A spokesperson said: “We are obviously disappointed that the revised pay offer negotiated by Senior Unite representatives and
supported by full time Unite officials on behalf of Leonardo members has not been positively received by the membership.”
They added: “We have taken all steps possible to minimise disruption to our business and our customers. We would welcome Unite back to the table in a bid to reach a resolution.”
Quick news Battery blaze
A MAN was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in Bridgwater on Thursday evening (November 13).
Firefighters from Bridgwater were sent to the scene - a two-storey property - at 5.45pm.
The blaze involved lithium batteries stored in a groundfloor annexe, a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.
"Crews used two breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to ensure the fire was fully extinguished," they went on.
"The annexe was 25% fire damaged and 100% smoke damage to the annexe.
"One male was suffering with slight smoke inhalation and received first aid from crews."
They said the cause of the fire was accidental and crews left the scene at 7.45pm.

CLARE Moody, Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset, says her work will continue – despite the government announcing the role is to be abolished.
On Thursday (November 13), Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood (Lab, Birmingham Ladywood) announced PCCs will be abolished by the 2028 election cycle, a move the Government said would save at least £100 million.
The Home Secretary said the move came as “turnout at the polls and public knowledge of who their local PCC is has been incredibly low”, with two in five people unaware PCCs even exist.
PCC roles will be absorbed by regional mayors wherever possible, or by elected council leaders in areas without a mayor – such as the Somerset Council region.
“The introduction of police and crime commissioners by the last government was a failed experiment,” the Home Secretary said.
“I will introduce new reforms so police are accountable to their local mayoralties or local
councils. The savings will fund more neighbourhood police on the beat across the country, fighting crime and protecting our communities.
“I would like to recognise the efforts of all current and former police and crime commissioners, and thank them. These individuals served their communities and will continue to do so until they have completed their current terms.”
Reacting to the news, Avon & Somerset PCC Moody, said: “It is important to stress that this is not an immediate change. The current system remains in place until 2028, and all the important work underway, including commissioning vital support services, scrutinising police performance and building safer communities, continues as normal.
“I want to reassure partners, community groups and residents that current commissioning, funding and scrutiny work will continue.
“The relationships and partnerships built across our communities remain central and will be maintained throughout any transition.
“This will not be a rushed
PCC Clare vows to continue work before roles are abolished
process. It will be carefully planned, and more details will be shared as they become available.
“Above all, my focus remains the same – working with the police to keep people safe, supporting victims and working with partners and communities to prevent crime and harm.
“I will continue to deliver on that mission with the same commitment, openness and collaboration that underpin everything I do.”
Chair of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC), Emily Spurrell, the PCC for Merseyside, said: “On behalf of our communities we are deeply disappointed by this decision and the lack of engagement with us.
“For more than a decade, directly elected Police and Crime Commissioners have transformed policing accountability and delivered essential support services for victims of crime. Having a single, visible local leader –answerable to the public – has improved scrutiny and transparency, ensuring policing
delivers on the issues that matter most to local communities.
“Abolishing PCCs now, without any consultation, as policing faces a crisis of public trust and confidence and as it is about to be handed a much stronger national centre, risks creating a dangerous accountability vacuum.
“Many of today’s flagship government missions –supporting victims, working with local partners to prevent crime, tackling violence against women and girls – originated with and are delivered by PCCs, reflecting the priorities of our communities.
“Whatever follows in our place must be rooted in local and national accountability, clear and identifiable leadership and connected to local communities. The public deserve nothing less.
“PCCs have worked hand-inhand with the Home Office and operational policing to shape a police service fit for the future and confront policing’s biggest challenges. We remain committed to ensuring that public accountability remains at the heart of police reform.”

King's Award gives royal approval for quartet of Somerset charities
A QUARTET of Somerset charities have received Royal recognition.
The Exmoor Community Bus Association, the Good Fellowship Club, based in the Yeovil area, Green Wedmore, and the Thomas Poole Library, based in Nether Stowey, have been awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS).
Equivalent to an MBE for individuals, KAVS is the highest award given to voluntary groups in the UK, celebrating outstanding work done by charities.
Justin Sargent DL, who oversees the nomination process in Somerset on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant, said: “I am delighted that each of these groups has received the highest recognition for their work in their communities.

“They are four very different organisations, but they all show the
extraordinary impact small groups of volunteers can have, making Somerset a better place for everyone. I congratulate them all.
“As well as richly deserved recognition for their hard work, the Kings Awards for Voluntary Service will enhance the reputation of these groups and raise their profile, helping them attract support for their work.”

Ben has recently been appointed to the New Homes Department at Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) following an extensive career in the property industry, most recently as a branch manager of a leading Somerset estate agency.
He particularly enjoyed working with developers as part of his former role and will concentrate on that area at GTH.
His role, as a new homes area account manager, will see Ben looking after GTH’s housebuilder clients across Somerset and Dorset.

Growing up in Sweden, Ben took an interest in architecture and enjoyed drawing property from an early age.
He moved to the UK more than a decade ago and began working for his uncle’s recruitment agency where he met his wife.
However, his interest in property remained and he was delighted to embark on a role in estate agency, where he quickly progressed through the ranks and became a branch manager within three years.
Away from work, Ben enjoys exploring the Somerset countryside with his wife,

Onset of winter brings flood concerns...
AS WE we move into the winter months communities across the Glastonbury and Somerton constituency are once again preparing for what has become a familiar and worrying reality.
We have some of the lowest lying and most flood-prone land in the country, and every year residents brace themselves for the impact that heavy rainfall, high groundwater and rising river levels can bring.
As MP, I am determined to keep the pressure on the government and work with agencies and local partners so that Somerset gets the flood resilience support it urgently needs.
This month, I met with Water and Flooding Minister Emma Hardy along with the Environment Agency, to discuss Somerset’s situation in detail.
I have also invited Emma to

by SARAH DYKE Lib Dem MP for Glastonbury & Somerton
visit me in Somerset so she can see the challenges first-handwhich I’m pleased she has accepted.
Much of our conversation focused on the troubling withdrawal of Environment Agency funding for the maintenance of Main Rivers.
While I recognise the financial pressures faced by the Environment Agency, the decision to withdraw maintenance without due consultation, an impact assessment, or transitional arrangement is unacceptable and contrary to the urgent need to improve Somerset’s resilience against flooding.
Worse still, maintenance has not taken place in some areas
for several years. This leaves the Somerset Drainage Board Consortium without the time or resources to assess risk or put in place contingency plans.
It also shifts responsibility for river maintenance, which contributes hugely to flood prevention, onto rate payers who simply cannot carry this burden alone. At a time when we should be strengthening flood resilience, this decision could have drastic consequences for residents in Somerset.
At the meeting, I made clear that people across Somerset are feeling worried and anxious about what this winter will bring, so I am calling for a coordinated plan of action involving Defra, the
Environment Agency, the Somerset Rivers Authority, Somerset Council, the Internal Drainage Boards and riparian owners. Only by working together, transparently and with proper funding can we protect homes, infrastructure and farmland.
After Christmas, I will be holding a second Flooding Symposium to bring partners and residents together to discuss potential solutions as we face the removal of this crucial Environment Agency funding.
We must ensure both that local voices are heard by the Government, and that local solutions are developed quickly.
n As always, I want to hear from you. If you would like to share your views, have an issue I can help with, or wish to attend one of my regular advice surgeries, contact me on sarah. dyke.mp@parliament.uk.
Your Party announces Somerset meeting
YOUR Party – the new political organisation founded by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and others – is hosting a meeting in Somerset for members.
On November 22, county members of the party will gather at the Avalon Room in Glastonbury “to meet and prepare for the inaugural party conference in Liverpool”.
From 1.30pm, party officials aim to capture views on the recently-released founding documents, and to identify and discuss key issues impacting market towns and rural communities.
Information gathered will be shared with Somerset delegates who are selected for Your Party’s first conference, set for November 29 and 30.
Samantha Briggs, a Your Party member and organiser, said: “We are excited to meet as many local Your Party members

as possible at this event.
“The members we have spoken to already are looking forward to working together closely to make a difference at a grassroots level, and to ensure that current distractions in the Parliamentary Group do not overshadow the wishes of
members, especially those of us in rural areas.”
Nationally, membership of Your Party has reached 50,000, with 800,000 expressions of interest received following launch.
Somerset Your Party members can email
joinussomerset@gmail.com to reserve their place at the event in Glastonbury, while supporters (non-members) are welcome to join the local Facebook group, Your Party Supporters Somerset (and surrounds) and Building ‘Your Party’ in Frome and locality.
Miles promoted - weeks after course end
JUST weeks after completing his apprenticeship, Miles Broughton has been promoted.
The former engineering student discovered a passion for construction while working with his carpenter father – and approached Taunton-based Summerfield Homes about starting an apprenticeship.
The developer took him on, with Miles attending Bridgwater and Taunton College one day a week and spending the remaining days on-site at developments in North Petherton, Watchet and Taunton.
Now, just weeks after finishing his apprenticeship, he has been promoted to assistant site manager for the firm – and recommended the route to others seeking a career in construction.
“This has been a great way to learn, gaining experience while working towards a qualification,” Miles said.

“I enjoy the fact that every day is different and am grateful for the support I have received from my work colleagues.”

Group MD, James Holyday, said: “Miles has shown real commitment throughout his apprenticeship.

Vauxhall Corsa GSE Vision Gran
Turismo is a potential gamechanger
VAUXHALL has lost the plot. A concept car is supposed to be ridiculously futuristic, stretched out to absurdly impractical lengths, and with a bonnet so streamlined there’s no way you’d fit an engine beneath it.
But as the name suggests, the Vauxhall Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo is exactly that: a Vauxhall Corsa. Surely, the decision to base a new concept on a small family hatchback is indicative of a deficiency in Vauxhall’s marble department.
Especially when the car in question doesn’t really exist outside of the digital world, having been designed specifically to be driven using a PlayStation controller.
Although, that little fact does place the seemingly strange car choice in a slightly different context, implying that; a) beneath the concept styling - and some frankly incomprehensible numbers - lies the basis of the 7th generation Corsa scheduled for release next year; and b) Vauxhall is planning a big future for the GSE badge.
Those two statements may seem strange considering we’re talking about a car designed for
a computer game - Grand Turismo 7, in case you missed the clue in the name - but when you dig down into the details it starts to make a bit more sense.
After teasing us with a few vague images, Vauxhall revealed the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo at the beginning of September. Despite the apparent frivolity, there is a serious point behind the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo. As well as showcasing the potential of Vauxhall’s performancefocused GSE sub-brand, it also hints at what could be achieved using the latest electrified small car platforms.
Although, it is hard to get beneath the surface when the surface in question is that distracting.
At the front, a new lighting signature combines with an illuminated badge, and the gloss-black Vizor from Vauxhall’s newer models has been replaced with a clear version because it now conceals the daytime running lights. I could also mention the fact the rear lights spell out “Vauxhall” across the tailgate, that the indicators are cleverly integrated into the bumpers, or that it’s full of little tributes to
iconic models like the Opel Manta 400 rally car and the Nova SRi that proved so popular during the 1980s.
But let’s face it, you’re looking an angry bumble bee wearing full body armour. If it suddenly transformed into a robot, eyebrows would remain unmoved. The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo is all angles and pointy bits and spoilers and splitters and fantastically wide wheel arches and enormous alloys. It’s gloriously and outlandishly childish, and that’s the point.
By contrast, the interior replaces the dramatic with the spartan. Boasting what Vauxhall describe as a “detoxed racing experience”, it’s a space that has clearly been designed for the sole purpose of driving the car.
The suspended driver’s seat is a masterclass in weightsaving, featuring a seat base fixed to the floor and a separate back rest bolted to the roll cage, meaning driver adjustments are made by moving the steering wheel and pedals back and forth rather than sliding the seat. The sleek GT3-style steering wheel provides an unobstructed view of the most important information which is projected
on the head-up display. And that’s about it for the interior of the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo. No infotainment screens, no dizzying arrays of buttons and switches, it doesn’t even have a traditional instrument display because the HUD does that job. Aside from a few onboard sensors to alert the driver to the presence of other vehicles, there is nothing else to do in there except drive it as fast as you can.
But beneath the digital looks, Vauxhall’s is making a serious point with some serious engineering.
The concept is built on a brand-new STLA Small platform, which by massive coincidence is rumoured to be introduced for the first time on the next Corsa. That would make it slightly longer and wider than the current Corsa, but not to any significant degree. The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo also draws its power from the same 82kWh battery you’ll find in Vauxhall’s Grandland SUV.
And thus endeth the similarities...
The next Corsa won’t produce 800bhp. The next Corsa won’t have permanent all-wheel
drive. The next Corsa won’t have active aerodynamics with a spoiler that automatically extends backwards over the rear of the car to decrease drag and improve stability at high speed. If the next Corsa has a spoiler at all, it’s unlikely to also pop up and act as an airbrake. And the next Corsa definitely won’t hit 62mph in 2 seconds or need to be limited to a top speed of 199mph.
The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo does all of that. Or at least, it has the potential to do so. Vauxhall insists that in engineering terms, that farfetched performance is as achievable in the real world as on a PlayStation. The new EV platform, the battery packs, the electric motors, all those components exist in the real world, and they can clearly achieve a lot more than we currently ask of them.
Rather than a combination of technical exercise and clever

marketing, the underlying story is the future direction of a Vauxhall GSE sub-brand.
In the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo, Vauxhall has begun to explore the boundaries of what design boss Mark Adams described as its “Type R moment”. In the same way that Honda’s Type R stands apart from its other models, the Corsa concept highlights the path
Vauxhall are looking to take with the GSE designation. The aim is to create a series of proper performance cars that will appeal to a younger audience and show Vauxhall in a new light.
In the meantime, the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo serves as an insight into the next generation of the regular Corsa before it launches next year.

Vauxhall has confirmed that some of the details in the concept will inform the design of the new model. You may not get the enormous body kit and all the performance tweaks, but things like the new lighting signature and the see-through Vizor could feature, and don’t be surprised if the overall body shape remains broadly similar, albeit significantly toned down for production versions. It won’t look or go anything like this one, but as I said earlier, some of it makes a bit more sense.

How to grow your own tasty asparagus...
by Sally Gregson
IT is definitely a delight to indulge in home-grown asparagus, pulled from the border and steamed straight away. They just need lots of creamy butter, black pepper and salt. And now is a good time to order the crowns while they go into dormancy.
Connoisseurs of asparagus recommend the variety ‘Backlim’ for its fat, green spears, or try ‘Pacific Purple’ for coloured stems.
In a new vegetable garden, it should be easy to put aside an area specifically for asparagus. They don’t like company, especially that of pernicious weeds such as dandelion, docks and ground elder.
When the crowns arrive, they should be kept in a bucket or tray of sand out of the damaging frosts – young plants are vulnerable to freezing

temperatures, especially if they have started to push up in a warm parcel. Decide on an undisturbed location for a dedicated asparagus bed and prepare it by first clearing the soil of perennial weeds. Then fork in lots of well-rotted manure mixed with mushroom compost
to make the soil friable, easy-draining. And leave the border undisturbed over the winter.
Come February, as the soil starts to warm up, a haze of green weed seedlings will need to be cut off with a hoe, at least once.
It’s a sign that the soil is

ready to plant the asparagus crowns. Give each asparagus crown plenty of room – about 30cm wide and about 15cm deep should allow space for the developing crowns to expand.
Make a mound of soil in the centre and place the crown on top with the roots spread out around. Cover the plant with about 5cm of soil firmed in gently.
Keep the plant watered during dry weather, and as the new spears extend, fill the trench up with more soil until it is full by the following autumn. The juicy spears should be ready for pulling after about three years.
The last piece of advice is perhaps the hardest – it is always important to stop pulling the shoots by the end of June. Allow the plant a little natural growth for the remainder of the summer. And enjoy the fruits of your labour, and your patience.

Sowing the seeds of environmental progress during National Tree Week

NATIONAL Tree Week will be marked at a Somerset beauty spot with a special week-long programme of planting.
Somerset Council has announced that to mark the week, which runs from November 22 to 30, tree planting will be taking place at Pit Wood, Ham Hill.
The celebration will end with
a Community Tree Planting Day on Saturday, November 29.
Carbon Aware Productions and Ham and Doulting Stone are funding and supporting the planting of 3,000 native trees, and during National Tree Week, rangers will be joined by regular volunteers, teams from RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset Council volunteers, The Friends of Ham Hill, and members of the public
to get them in the ground and strengthen Ham Hill’s biodiversity and resilience to climate change.
The tree planting schedule at Pit Wood will include:
n Monday, November 24: Dry-stone walling and construction volunteers kick off the planting.
all the benefits trees bring, and thanks to the incredible support from Carbon Aware Productions, we can plant 3,000 native trees at Ham Hill this winter.
INTRODUCE YOUR BUSINESS TO

n Tuesday, November 25: Green Estates volunteers continue the work.
n Wednesday, November 26: Regular Ham Hill practical volunteers take over.
n Thursday, November 27: RNAS Yeovilton team joins the effort.
n Friday, November 28: Somerset Council staff volunteers plant the penultimate trees.
n Saturday, November 29: Community Tree Planting
Councillor Graham Oakes, executive member for public health, climate change and environment, said: “Trees are at the heart of a healthier, greener Somerset. They absorb carbon, clean our air, support wildlife, and even help improve our wellbeing, and just spending time around trees can reduce stress and lift our mood.
“National Tree Week is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate
“This project is a great example of what we can achieve together, boosting biodiversity, building climate resilience, and helping Somerset grow its tree canopy from a low 8% to at least the national average of 13%.
“It is also a key part of delivering the Somerset Tree Strategy, which sets out our vision for a greener, more sustainable future for Somerset.
“Whether you are a seasoned volunteer or simply curious to get involved, we would love you to join us at Ham Hill on November 29 and help plant a better tomorrow, one tree at a time.”
All are welcome to join in at Ham Hill for a day of tree planting and community spirit. No experience is needed, just enthusiasm, with guidance, PPE, tea, coffee, and biscuits provided.
n Anyone wishing to take part should meet at Pit Wood, Ham Hill, at 9.30am, with parking available at Witcombe Valley Track. Use What3Words, ///waitress.state.custodian.

MP's hope pharmacies could re-open
WEST Somerset MP Rachel Gilmour is calling for pharmacy services to be restored in Minehead and Williton.
Mrs Gilmour (Lib Dem, Tiverton & Minehead), pictured, has been pressing Care Minister Stephen Kinnock to ensure pharmacy services are returned to the constituency.
On October 30, she wrote to the Minister in support of Williton Parish Council’s request for the Department for Health and Social Care to explore options for restoring pharmacy services in the town.
And she also raised the issue in Parliament, when the Minister said he planned to meet the General Pharmaceutical Council to try and resolve the problems.
Mr Kinnock said his department was actively reviewing pharmacy business regulations after the MP

explained how local NHS Integrated Care Boards were “hamstrung” by current contract regulations, after she previously raised these issues with local NHS ICBs.
Changes to emergency care
THE way people access urgent or emergency care at Yeovil Hospital has changed.
Since November 11, the hospital’s emergency department (ED) has been reconfigured to allow patients to be triaged at the front door.
From there, they can head either straight into ED if it’s an emergency or life-threatening condition, or next door to a newly-developed urgent treatment centre (UTC), which can treat urgent conditions.
Examples of an emergency condition include chest pain, heavy bleeding, stroke symptoms (sudden onset of weakness or speech difficulties), abdominal pain, breathing difficulties, and burns.
Urgent conditions – treated at the UTC – include sprains and strains, broken bones, cuts and wounds, bites, minor head injuries, chest infections, throat infections, eye infections, urinary infections, and emergency contraception.
Katy Sizer, emergency department and same day emergency care service manager, said: "By opening this urgent treatment centre at Yeovil Hospital, our aim is that patients with non-life threatening conditions will be seen quicker, reducing waiting times when our teams must also prioritise emergency patients.
"It’ll also mean that specialised colleagues in our emergency department are freed up to treat those needing emergency or life-threatening conditions."
Dr Joby Kotoor, lead emergency department consultant, added: “There’s no change to the way patients need to present to our emergency department, as they should arrive at the same front door as before. They may be triaged across to the urgent treatment centre where appropriate, where they’ll be seen by a practitioner with the right skills to treat their needs."
"essential pharmacy services"bringing hopes pharmacies at Baytree House in Minehead and in Williton could be taken over.
"My office has heard from so many constituents about the unacceptable Jhoots Pharmacy services in West Somerset," the MP said. "Following my continued pressure on the Minister, I am pleased to hear that Allied Pharmacies have struck a deal with Jhoots and now plan to reinstate essential services.
"I hope that this rescue deal will now see services improve for constituents in Tiverton and Minehead, easing the pressures on existing pharmacies.
Several Jhoots pharmacies in the area closed after the firm collapsed into administration. It has since been taken over by Allied Pharmacies, which said it intended to restore
"Although this feels like a massive campaign win, my office will continue to observe this issue closely to ensure constituents don’t have to face the long delays in receiving life-improving and life-saving prescriptions."

Somerset rescue centre steps in after dog found stuck with 6ft chain around his neck
ADOG was found trapped in a hedge - with a 6ft-long metal chain around its neck.
The Rottweiler was taken to St Giles Animal Rescue, at Wrantage near Taunton, last week, after being found as a stray.
"He had become trapped in a hedge, unable to move," a St Giles spokesperson said. "If a kind passer-by hadn’t spotted him, he likely wouldn’t have made it.
"It’s hard to imagine how scared he must have been, or how long he'd been carrying that weight — both the chain and the fear that came with it.
"But here’s the thing: despite
everything, he's gentle, sweet, trusting, grateful. He leans into our hands for fuss, and his tail hasn't stopped wagging since realising he's safe."
The rescue said the dognamed Bear by staff - was an example of how the charity's supporters help animals in need.
"You give dogs like these a second chance, a warm bed, and the kindness they’ve been missing for far too long," the spokesperson added.
"To our team, volunteers, and everyone who donates — thank you for helping us turn fear into trust, and pain into peace."
They said Bear would soon be on the lookout for his forever home as his recovery continues.

RSPCA backs plan to limit animal testing
ANIMAL charity the RSPCA has cautiously welcomed the UK Government’s first-ever strategy for replacing the use of animals in research and testing.
The charity said the proposal was as a “significant step forward” for science and for animal welfare.
However, RSPCA chiefs urged ministers to ensure delivery of the proposed actions in the plan, which could help reduce and replace the use of thousands of animals in harmful experiments each year in the UK.

in science: a strategy to support the development, validation and uptake of alternative methodsincludes initiatives such as increasing investment in people and infrastructure to support the development and uptake of non-animal methods.
It also proposes steps to prioritise human-relevant approaches, and to build awareness and confidence among scientists, funding bodies and regulators in these new technologies.
Actions will be complemented by moves to help promote the wider cultural shift required, the government said, so there is a greater challenge of a perceived 'need' to use animals, including an immediate emphasis on not using animals where alternatives already exist.
The RSPCA has called for an end to animals being used in science around the world, with animal experiments instead being replaced with humane, non-animal methods.
The charity said it believes the UK Government can play a
key role in making that happen.
Barney Reed, senior science and policy manager for the RSPCA's Animals in Science Department, said: "This strategy marks a significant step forward in ending the use of animals in science.
"We know the UK public wants to see action and supports this; with 77% of UK adults agreeing that the UK Government should commit to phasing out the use of animals in scientific research and testing.
"Huge momentum has been building in recent years, driven by the emergence and pace of development of exciting new non-animal technologies. These have allowed everyone involved to raise their ambitions for how it might be possible to do the science of tomorrow better - and without animals suffering.
"These are exciting times for innovation in the life sciences, with opportunities for UK scientists to exploit new approaches that don't cause harm to animals."
