370 ENGINEERING STUDENTS ENGAGE IN BAGUIO-SUBIC-MANILA INDUSTRIAL TOUR 2023 Exploring Greater Heights in Construction: Civil Engineering Industrial Tour ‘23

by Danell Jumayao Delving into the structures of the metro, two hundred fifty (250) fourthyear civil engineering students participated in this year’s Industrial Tour dated from November 20 to 25.

The six-day tour included immersion in various destinations from Baguio, Subic, and Manila where students visited and benchmarked multiple companies and construction sites to engulf themselves in the industry.

“It’s amusing to see the difference in structures back home and at Luzon area. We were able to gain valuable perspectives from professionals during our tour,” CE student France Beatriz Caballero expressed.

SM Engineering Design and Development learning tour highlighted the aspiring engineers’ first day as they took part in a company introduction and site visit to the ongoing construction of the extension of the Mall of Asia, on November 20.

For the second day,

tigers dipped through the breeze of Baguio City — touring around their famous attractions such as Strawberry Farm and Wright Park, and also benchmarking at the St. Louis University and DPWH construction sites.

The department also had the chance to visit the Casiciaco Recoletos Seminary in Baguio City.

CE students explored the Multi-Rock Batching Plant and stopped by for leisure time at the Zoobic Safari at Subic on the third day, November 22.

For the Manila tour, CE students went to various companies such as Steel Asia, DM Consuji Construction and Company, and Boysen Paints.

The department also exlored ongoing construction sites at UP Diliman College of Arts and Letters, Las Pinas General Hospital, and Las Pinas Satellite Hospital.

Alvin Go Ping, Engr. Daniel Pollentes, Engr. Faith Geria, and Engr. Frances Quinco.

Touring through multiple companies and gathering insights from professional engineers, the industrial tour aimed to expose aspiring civil engineers in their chosen industry, especially to workspaces and sites away from Negros.*

Gearing Towards Expanding Knowledge: Mechanical Engineering Industrial Tour ‘23

Seeking to discover best practices and attain fresh ideas on great far-flung cities, the forty three (43) fourthyear Mechanical Engineering students joined the week-long Industrial Tour from November 20 to 25.

Included in the six-day tour were engagements and visits to multiple companies and plant sites from Baguio to Subic and up to Manila to explore the different scopes of the mechanical industry.

“During my ME Industrial Tour, I gained insights into real-world applications of mechanical engineering principles. Understanding the importance of collaboration, problem-solving, and staying updated on industry advancements will be crucial for my future as a Mechanical Engineer. Additionally, handson experience with different technologies and machinery has broadened my practical skills, enhancing my readiness for diverse challenges in the field,” Erika Gwyneth Estosos,

a Mechanical Engineering Student conveyed in an interview.

The students’ tour stop started with Oriental Tin Plant to kickstart their knowledge on tin can manufacturing and as well as the sheet metal production process, Nov.20.

For the next day, ME students visited the St. Louis University ME Department and toured around Baguio Sewerage Treatment Plant and the Balatok Mines.

The ME students stopped by two locations— the One Subic Power Plant and the Giga Marie Mechanical Department while also spending leisure afterwards at their Subic Tour and Zoobic Safari Adventure on the third day of the tour, November 22.

Their Manila Tour commenced on the fourth day, exploring two locations on the metro namely the Ichivan Metal Casting Co. and the DOST Metal Industry Research and Development Center.

A day before the end

of the tour, the department visited the Asian Transmission Corporation in Calamba, Laguna, November 24.

Afterwards, along with the other departments of the College of Engineering, the students enjoined themselves through the fun and thrilling rides at the Enchanted Kingdom at Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

“I learned so many things on my ME Industrial Tour, one of which was how to manufacture materials we use daily, for example tin cans and “tansan” at Oriental Tin. The process, which ensures that our food is safe, involves processing even the packaging of our products.

It’s reassuring to me as a future mechanical engineer that the processes I’m seeing on the

tour need a hand and a brain of a mechanical engineer.

In these days of advanced technologies, it ensures that the whole world needs ME,” Jervien Real, President of the Mechanical Engineering Student Society expressed.

Uveiling the wide industry for the mechanical engineering profession, the immersion of the students to various companies and sites hopes to provide clear insights and perspectives to the future mechanical engineers of the opportunities to workplaces outside Negros.*

Uncovering Prospects in Chemical Engineering within the Field

Increasing expertise and discovering new things, this year’s Industrial Tour was participated by twelve (12) fourth-year chemical engineering students, last November 20 to 25.

Over the course of six days, tigers had the chance to fully engage in a broad spectrum of locations around Baguio, Subic, and Manila. Students had the valuable experience of

visiting various companies and construction sites, enabling them to closely see the other lab apparatus, and learn from industry practices.

“Of all the companies that accommodated us, SCPA was the only one that felt so welcoming and we can feel how prepared they are in accommodating us despite of having no electricity that day.

It’s a bit sad because, I was expecting that we could visit Petron, Bataan Plant. Nonetheless, the experience in every company was superb.” chemical engineering student Erika Labios expressed.

Camp Crame Laboratory in Quezon City, Metro Manila was the first stop of the twelve ChE students as they took part

NEWS in a forensic introduction comprised of different divisions such as DNA testing, gathering of evidences, autopsies and other forensic services.

At the second day of their tour, tigers enjoyed the breathtaking views and breeze of Baguio City and visited the Baguio Sewerage Treatment Plant.

They also explored One Subic Power and stopped by for leisure time at the Zoobic Safari at Subic on the third day, November 22.

Orocan Manufacturing Company and Sanicare Manufacturing Co. were the two companies they visited as part of the fourth day of their tour.

Boysen Paints was the only company they visited on their fifth day as they conducted a tour from the company’s 4th to 1st floor

which is also the order of the process in their plant, they were introduced to the raw materials of paint namely, pigments, additives, binders ,and solvents, and these are dispersed and mixed laminarly until the desired quality of formulation is achieved then the packing quality of the paint in their lab.

Engr. Ashraf Khater, ChE Department Head, and Engr. Nieves Canja joined the ChE students in their industrial tour.

“Besides going to Baguio, seeing tigers and lions at Subic, and of course, riding extreme rides at Enchanted Kingdom, I think the highlight of our industrial tour was going to the different industries, especially at Sanitary Care Products Asia, Inc.,” Labios added.*

Igniting Transformation and Electrifying Progress: Electrical Engineering Industrial Tour 2023

Forty four (44) fourth year electrical engineering students participated in an industrial tour last November 20-25, 2023.

UNO-R’s electrical engineering students immersed themselves in the business by visiting and assessing multiple electric companies and testing facilities in Baguio, Subic, and Manila.

During the first day, November 20, they started it with a quick city tour in Manila - highlighting their day exploring the Columbia Wire and Cable Corporation.

On the second day, students welcomed the spark of coldness in Baguio City as they headed for the city tour, spotlighting the visit to the Baguio

Electric Company and St. Louis University College of Engineering [Electrical Engineering Department].

On the next day, November 22, EE students started their day exploring the One Subic Power/Giga Marie Electrical and ended it with an entertaining Subic tour and Zoobic Safari Adventure.

On November 23, EE students traveled back to Manila and visited the Department of Energy (DOE) Laboratory and ACLARA Meters Philippines, in which they learned deeply about their chosen professions.

Next, students inspected the SOLARACE Energy Company, and embedded it with fun in the Enchanted Kingdom as

part of the tour on the fourth day, November 24.

Lastly, on their last day, students reminisce about the history and culture of the Filipinos by visiting the National Museum and other parts of the metro as part of their industrial tour.

“The tour was a practical application of our knowledge and experiences for our almost four years of being in this program. It enlightened us with the reality of our career path. The tour was also a gateway for us to apply the knowledge and theories we learned when we become professionals in the future. It also gave us the courage to pursue things that we thought were impossible being exposed to the workplace we’ll be in

someday. This knowledge we acquired helps in developing our overall personality as students and future engineers.” EESO President, Lynne Michelle Salazar stated when asked about the knowledge she gained from the tour.

The goal of the industrial tour is to introduce aspiring electrical engineers to electrical sites and industrial workspaces.

Educational trip Unveils Innovation: Electonics Engineering Industrial Tour ‘23 byJohn Mark Belleza

In a whirlwind of innovation and discovery, eight (8) electronics engineering students took part in a memorable six-day industrial tour last November 20 to 25.

Quinzy Corr G. Dojoles, a 4th year ECE student, expressed her thoughts when asked regarding the benefits acquired during her industrial tour. She said, “Companies that are in line with Electronics Engineering jobs are limited here in the province, so exploring numerous companies was exhilarating but daunting at the same time. It provided me input on where to explore more to deepen my wisdom and be fit for future job opportunities.

Furthermore, they gave us a chance to have a sneak peek at technologies that are still not available in the market,” For day 1, tigers went to Packetworx Techno Hub and

witnessed the production of various IoT components.

On the second day, amidst the humid air of Baguio, ATO CAAP BAGUIO accommodated them by providing an overview of their operations. Students learned about flight plans, different call signs, and the communication devices used by pilots and controllers. They also toured famous attractions in Baguio City.

Additionally, they visited St. Louis University College of Engineering (ECE Department) and Casiciaco Recoletos Seminary.

On the third day of the tour, ECE students visited the PAG ASA WEATHER BUREAU. They learned that in analyzing weather, certain teams are assigned specific roles, providing mainstream news regarding density, wind speed, direction, and other factors that must be accurately analyzed

to deliver reliable information.

Moreover, the students also participated in a fantastic Subic Tour for leisure time.

The department also toured Columbia Wire and Cable, where the engineers demonstrated the various procedures that a wire undergoes before it is shipped and sold. Additionally, they went to HYTEC ROBOTICS, where students were introduced to advancement within the realm of robotics, such as educational aid robots, digital whiteboards, and more, on November 23.

On the fifth day of the tour, SMART TELECOM captivated students with an exceptional experience, offering insights into their unreleased future plans.

Culminating the tour, the tigers explored the Enchanted Kingdom and the National Museum of the Philippines.

Ms. Dojoles also added, “In our industrial tour, I also learned

that, despite the hectic schedule, rest and patience are essential.

We cannot fully enjoy the whole itinerary if we are tired and stressed, for it will affect our mood and the surrounding people. As a future Engineer, always expect unforeseen situational problems, spontaneous talk, and on-thespot questioning; learn to solve them and go with the flow. The six-day tour seemed short but long enough to witness one of the contributors to technological innovations, the vanguards of society, the Electronics Engineers, with their work on continuously improving technology, which gave me enough strength to view the hard work I put in studying with great enthusiasm.”

The tour aimed to bridge the gap between practical knowledge and real-world application, empowering students to broaden their perspectives within their respective fields of study.

Engaging in the World of Hardware and Software: Computer Engineering industrial tour ‘23

From November 20 to November 25, 2023, thirteen (13) fourth-year Computer engineering students from the College of Engineering participated in a six-day industrial excursion in Manila, Baguio, and Subic.

The objective of the itinerary is to immerse students in the realm of computer engineering while also visiting tourist attractions to provide them with new experiences and to help them grow their knowledge and skills in their chosen field.

Their voyage kicked off with a city tour from Manila Cathedral to Saint Augustine Church,

followed by a visit to the PACKETWORX TECHNO HUB to discover more about technology.

Tigers didn’t miss the opportunity to explore the famous Night Market of Baguio during their stay in the city.

The fourth-year CpE students also benchmarked other sites, notably The St. Louis University College of Engineering where they welcomed the Tigers in their own computer engineering department.

They also visited the PAG-ASA Weather Bureau.

The Columbia Wire and Cable and HYTEC ROBOTICS accommodated

the CpE students on the 4th day of their tour while Smart Telecom highlighted their last day.

Engr. Gustillo and Engr. Shayne Sumagaysay led both ECE and CpE departments’ joint tour.

“The most memorable experiences during the industrial tour are the bonds and friendships that we created along the way. Also, gaining a deeper understanding of the industry, witnessing innovative processes, and interacting with professionals.” Kyle Pineda stated, a BSCpE E41 student.*

An Adventure Worth Remembering

The engineering students of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos began to delve deeper and immerse into the world of engineering with their recently concluded Baguio-Subic-Manila industrial tour. In partnership with Jaunts and Journeys Travel Center headed by Mr. Fredrick Pe and accompanied

by Dean Christopher Taclobos, department heads, and engineering professors, a total of 370 engineering students participated in the tour last November 20 to 25.

Industry Immersion As they undertook their immersive tour in the city’s capital, these students witnessed various processes behind several industry sites. As they further explored the vicinities in the area, the students acquired numerous vital insights from professionals in their chosen fields. For instance, in the procedures of establishing diverse structures, there are differences from one to the other.

Home Away from Home Furthermore, the students were also given ample time to relax and take in remarkable sights of the charming metro. As such, this immersive field trip also gave them unforgettable experiences with their peers. From spontaneous karaoke during the long bus rides, late night strolls, sight-seeing at some of the tourist attractions around the areas, the memories formed during the industrial tour was surely one for the books.

Widening Perspectives Above all, this productive industrial tour contributed in morphing the students’ perspectives regarding their program. They gathered valuable knowledge correlating with variety of industry niches. They were exposed to large companies, new industries, and hands-on experiences.

Hence, this field trip is deemed memorable and, at the same time, insightful to their future career paths. Their experiences taught them the ropes of the engineering field and strengthened their camaraderie and connections throughout their lives. Indeed, it is a productive and gratifying journey in the life of an engineering student.*

What is your Industrial Tour 2023 highlight?

MICHAEL FRANCIS TAN, BSCE I finally experienced, with my own eyes, the reality that engineering is society’s way of shaping and controlling the world for the betterment of human life. The many lectures and seminars were eye-opening.

However, the highlight of my engineering experience was on the evening of the first day. As everyone else on the bus was asleep, I beheld the wonders of the efficient and high-speed Luzon highway network.

I saw a glimpse of how engineering connects places and people to create an interconnected world.

JOHN FRIX ALEJANO, BSCHE One would expect it to be enchanted kingdom, bagiuo or subic, but truly for me it was the night flight, it was my first flight after all, just that experience of letting go of fear, and just being in the moment of flying above beautiful night lights also made my soul fly, and I will forever remember that moment. JAN MARIANNE TRINIDAD, BSEE Engaging on an industrial tour in the field of electrical engineering unfolds a series of captivating and insightful highlights. Exposure to diverse industrial environments, observing handson demonstrations, and interacting with professionals have broadened our perspective and understanding of electrical systems, control systems, automation, renewable energy systems, etc. It equipped everyone with practical knowledge that complements our academic learning beyond the four walls of our classroom. All in all, Industrial Tour 2023 was a remarkable yet tiring experience.

PAUL FRANCIS DY, BSECE Our field trip was an enriching and diverse experience.

We had the opportunity to tour several companies within our field, gaining valuable insights. I think the one major highlight for me was when we visited packetworx, where i got to see the Internet of Things (IoT) applied in a more practical scenario as opposed to theoretical knowledge. This is of great interest to me seeing as how tips from professionals and acesss to tools and IoT kits could help me create my thesis prototype. Overall, the industrial tour was a combination of professional exposure, leisure activities, and social bonding. It was a memorableexperience that contributed to our growth as future engineers.

CHESTER ALLEN CASAS, BSME As engineering students, we are often labeled as “Sa balay, eskwelahan, kag library lang ga-tinir” students.

Therefore, having this industrial tour where we can break-free from the pressure of studying and the stress of obtaining high grades is something new to us. All the days and nights spent together during our tour are undoubtedly a highlight for me. We relished the company of students from different engineering programs, strengthened our bonds within our batch, and, lastly, had our moment of escaping reality for a week.

TRIXIE ESTANIEL, BSCPE One of the most cherished moments during my travels was the tour of Enchanted Kingdom, a place where pure joy and excitement intertwine. Moreover, exploring the Smart Telecom Company in Manila was a glimpse into the heartbeat of technological innovation. We witnessed the cutting-edge infrastructure and innovative solutions that power our modern world was truly captivating. These experiences, from Enchanted Kingdom’s sheer thrill to Smart Telecom’s technological prowess, collectively crafted a tapestry of memories that illuminate the diverse and dynamic facets of the Philippines.

Additionally, visiting the HypTech Company was an extraordinary experience that delved into the cutting-edge world of technology. Engaging discussions with experts in the field broadened my perspective on the potential of tech, leaving me inspired and fascinated by the endless possibilities that innovation holds. Witnessing firsthand the creativity and dedication of the team at HypTech left an impression of awe and admiration, igniting a newfound interest in the ever-evolving realm of technology.
