TRIO DAY CELEBRATION

Over 30 years ago a congressional resolution was made to declare that February 28, 1986 would be a day to recognize the achievements of the Federal TRIO programs in schools across the nation. Since then, the fourth Saturday of February has been designated to celebrate National TRIO Day. TRIO is a group of federal programs that are funded by the Department of Education and help low-income and first-generation students enter, and earn a college degree. Since this declaration, schools have celebrated being a part of the TRIO family. This year marked the 34th anniversary of this celebratory day. Each year TRIO programs participate in events including service activities, state capital visits, conferences, and as a way of pausing to recognize this wonderful program we get to be a part of.

This year we had the privilege of spending National TRIO Day with our fellow Nebraska System TRIO members at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During this event the students were able to learn about advocacy, TRIO history, and meet participants from other TRIO programs. This gave our Project Achieve students the opportunity to learn more about how TRIO was developed, and how to champion legislation that supports their dreams while getting to know one another better. During the celebration one student from each TRIO program was honored with the “I Am TRIO” award. This award showcases the students who work hard to succeed in the classroom and give back to their community. The Project Achieve student we chose to highlight was Nyamal Khor. She is one of the most active students in our program and is always looking for new ways to give back. Nyamal is getting her degree in public health and plans to go on to get her BSN (Bachelor of Science in nursing). We are eagerly looking forward to what new ways we will celebrate and connect next year!
