ORIGINS was originally intended to celebrate the diverse musical traditions and heritage of the UNLV students involved in the choral program. It explored the musical “origins” of students and staff, giving us a chance to teach one another about our cultural history, language, spiritual and secular traditions, and musical uniqueness. Since UNLV’s student body is so diverse, this “exploration” has allowed us to experience dozens of musical traditions from around the world, from Norway to the Philippines, Israel to Brazil, Ethiopia to Korea, and from a multitude of unique American traditions: European folk music, spirituals and gospel, Mexican classical and folk music, and music of the Caribbean. The Division of Choral Studies now explores music from many of these traditions throughout the year, every year. Audiences can expect to hear music spanning many centuries and backgrounds on most UNLV choral programs.

The world, however, remains an enormous place, and sometimes it is better to focus one’s attention more narrowly upon a single dot on the map. This narrower focus gives us time to learn more about music’s context in history and culture, to spend more time understanding different languages, to read about a place, ask deeper, more illuminating questions, and to invite knowledgeable guests to teach us how to make music in a manner that is respectful of the people who created it.

We hope that you will enjoy our program this evening and that it provides you with a peek into a vast, joyful, humorous, spiritual, and powerful musical tradition and history.

PROGRAM

TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS

O salutaris hostia

O salutaris hostia quae coeli pandis ostium. bella premunt hostilia; Darobur, fer auxilium, Uni trinoque Domino sit sempiternal gloria: Qui vitam sine termino, nobis donet in patria. Amen

O saving Victim, Who expands the door of heaven, Hostile armies press, Give strength; bear aid. To the One and Triune Lord, May there be everlasting glory; who life without end gives us in the homeland. Amen.

Only in Sleep

Only in sleep I see their faces, Children I played with when I was a child, Louise comes back with her brown hair braided, Annie with ringlets warm and wild.

Only in sleep Time is forgotten

What may have come to them, who can know?

Yet we played last night as long ago, And the dollhouse stood at the turn of the stair.

The years had not sharpened their smooth round faces, I met their eyes and found them mild Do they, too, dream of me, I wonder, And for them am I too a child?

1. Lindude ärtamine

1. Waking the Birds

Tšitšor-birds, tšitšor-birds now it’s time to wake, tšitšor, tšitšor! You have had a long sleep night after night, day after day, tšitšor, tšitšor!

Fat flounders into our sea, lean ones into another one, tšitšor, tšitšor!

Good animals into our wood, wolves and bears into another one, tšitšor, tšitšor! Good boys into our village, cruel ones into another one, tšitšor, tšitšor!

Hard-working maids into our village, lazy ones into another one. tšitšor, tšitšor!

Tšitšor-birds, now it’s time for you to wake!

4. Unehiireke

Kus sa juuokšõd, unnõ iirki, pai-pai-pai-pai?

Puud’i kaandam, sounõ kitam, pai-pai-pai.

Sa läämatõd souv sizzõl jära.

Ma pugub soona lovan ala.

Mis sa siiedõ, mis sa juuodõ, soona lovan ala puggõn?

Ljeggõ siiebõ, duuńi juuobõ.

Sinnõn paaistab maggõ ilzõ.

Ma siskabõ niglõks kat’ki.

U se sinnõn siz äb poddō?

Ma võõidabõ võõidōgõksõ.

Kus sa sjeda võõ saadõ?

Vanaääma buundlast utab.

Kus se vanaääma saabõ?

Kus se ruuogõ lada saabõ?

Uuomõgkstug tämmõn aandab.

Kus se uuomõgkastug saabõ?

Tõva joggõ puoistõ utab.

Why are you running, wee winkie mouse, pai-pai-pai-pai?

To carry the wood, to heat the sauna, pai-pai-pai.

You’ll suffocate in the smoke.

I’ll crawl under the platform.

What will you eat there?

What will you drink?

I’ll eat some mud, I’ll drink some mire. You’ll get a swollen belly.

I’ll prick it with a needle.

Wouldn’t it smart?

I’ll smear some butter on it.

Where do you get the butter from?

I’ll take it from the grandmother’s year.

Where do the grandmother get it from?

From the udder of a piebald cow.

Where does the piebald cow get it from?

From the head of a green bulrus.

Where does the bulrush get it from?

From the dew in the morning.

Where does the morning dew get it from?

From the bottom of a deep river.

Ilus Hääl

Helisege helded metsad

Hüüdke vastu hütikesed

Minu kauni heale vastu

Lahedama laulu vastu

Sang the father, sang the son, sang the two hired helps Father and his song sang well together, much better than the hired help

Rallallaa!

What’s their secret, how does it come, that their singing goes so well? They’ve been drinking a lot of beer, they have eaten a lot of honey

Rallallaa!

One barrel’s in the cellar, two mugs are on the table. Shove it here, shove it there, shove it to the end of the table. Rallalla!

Christ is risen on this day Hallelujah

Let us all, our voices raising, Jesus Christ as one be praising He, the child of Virgin bright, Shines today on us his light

Praise my soul, the Lord! (Praise the Lord, my soul!) You are praised! Lord, my God, You are great. You are praised!

How great are Your works, Lord! You have done everything wisely. Glory be to You, Lord, who has made everything!

Glory be to the Father, to the Son, to the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen

Ring out, generous forests

Shout back the huts

In return for my graceful voice

In return for my wonderful song

Kus mu healta kuuldaneksi Where my voice is heard

Kus mu laulu laksuneksi Where my song is sung

Seal kõik metsa murdunesksa

Ilma raua rabamata

There all forests will fall

Even without striking iron

The UNLV Division of Choral Studies offers four ensembles: University Chorale, UNLV Singers, Chamber Consort, and, through a collaborative partnership, students have the option to enroll in the Las Vegas Master Singers for academic credit. The Division of Choral Studies also sponsors a student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, Scarlet Tones, the university’s contemporary a cappella ensemble, and Rebel Rhapsody, a student-led show choir club. Students who participate in the division’s ensembles pursue careers in music performance, music education, composition, musicology, music technology, music business, and conducting. Its alumni have made significant contributions, locally, nationally, and internationally, to the choral and vocal arts.
