Note from the composer: I wrote TaReKiTa as a gift for a choir called Urban Voices Project. They are a choir of people who are currently or have recently experienced homelessness on Skid Row in Los Angeles. They are so dear to me, and one day I just decided to teach them about Indian rhythm. They enjoyed the lesson so much that I wanted to write them a piece that would use what I had taught them. The result was TaReKiTa I literally wrote it in an hour, just in a single moment of inspiration, and recorded myself singing all the parts for them to learn. It has since become a staple of their repertoire, but it’s also been sung by so many choirs around the world. There is just something about the piece, perhaps borne out of my love for this choir, that just seems to resonate with people.
Practically speaking, this piece is based on sounds the Indian drum, the tabla, makes, called “bols” they are onomatopoeic sounds that imitate the sound of the drum. The result is something like a scat would be in jazz ecstatic, energetic, rhythmic music that feels good on the tongue
When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds

Veni Sancte Spiritus
Alleluia.
Medieval sequence for Pentecost
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free
Loving mother of the redeemer, who remains the accessible Gateway of Heaven And Star of the Sea, give aid to a falling people that strives to rise:
Oh thou who begot thy Holy Creator while all nature marveled, Virgin both before and after receiving that “Ave” from the mouth of Gabriel, have mercy on sinners.
Come Holy Spirit: fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle your love in them.
You, who through the diversity of many tongues, have gathered the nations together in the unity of faith. Alleluia.
My spirit sang all day O my joy. Nothing my tongue could say, Only My joy! My heart an echo caught O my joyAnd spake, Tell me thy thought, Hide not thy joy. My eyes gan peer around, O my joy What beauty hast thou found? Shew us thy joy.
In the bleak mid winter Frosty wind made moan; Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid winter Long ago.
Angels and Archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air;
O Radiant Dawn, Splendour of eternal Light, Sun of Justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. Isaiah had prophesied,
The Bible, Book of Romans
DaumerMy jealous ears grew whist; O my joy Music from heaven is't, Sent for our joy? She also came and heard; O my joy, What, said she, is this word? What is thy joy? And I replied, O see, O my joy, 'Tis thee, I cried, 'tis thee: Thou art my joy.
But only His Mother In her maiden bliss Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss.
What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a Shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him, Give my heart
‘The people who walked in darkness have seen the great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.’ Amen.
Now the spirit that has raised Jesus from the dead, dwells in you.The very same spirit that has raised Jesus from the dead, gives life to your mortal bodies, so that his spirit may dwell in you.
On the Danube’s shore there stands a house, from its windows a rosy girl looks out. The girl is excellently guarded, ten bolts are fixed to her door. Ten bolts of iron a mere trifle! I’ll break them down, as though they were glass
Christina Rosetti Georg Friedrich11.
Georg Friedrich DaumerSong (I gaze upon you)
I gaze upon you and the sun grows large Soon it will overwhelm our day. Awake with heart and colour in your head to chase away the night’s bad dreams. Awake that I may follow where you go. I have a body that waits to follow you, from the gates of day to the gates of dusk; a body to spend with you a life of love.
Paul Eluard2.
Georg Friedrich Daumerlittle man in a hurry little man (in a hurry full of an important worry) halt stop forget relax wait (little child who have tried who have failed who have cried) lie bravely down sleep big rain big snow big sun big moon (enter us)
E.E. CummingsNo, it is not possible to put up with these people; they interpret everything so spitefully. If I’m happy, they say I harbour lewd desires; if I’m quiet, they say I’m madly in love.
The wildly lashed waves dash against the rocks; whoever has not learnt to sigh will learn it when he loves.
George Friedrich DaumerIn the middle
of a life that's as complicated as everyone else's, struggling for balance, juggling time. The mantle clock that was my grandfather’s has stopped at 9:20; we haven't had time to get it repaired. The brass pendulum is still, the chimes don't ring.
One day I look out the window, green summer, the next, the leaves have already fallen, and a grey sky lowers the horizon.
When you gaze at me so tenderly and so full of love all the gloom that assails me fades away.
Oh, do not let this love’s sweet ardour vanish! No one will love you as truly as I.
Our children almost grown, our parents gone, it happened so fast. Each day, we must learn again how to love, between morning's quick coffee and evening's slow return. Steam from a pot of soup rises, mixing with the yeasty smell of baking bread. Our bodies twine, and the big black dog pushes his great head between; his tail, a metronome, 3/4 time.
We'll never get there, Time is always ahead of us, running down the beach, urging us on faster, faster, but sometimes we take off our watches, sometimes we lie in the hammock, caught between the mesh of rope and the net of stars, suspended, tangled up in love, running out of time.
Barbara CokerDeath Came a Knockin’
You know that death came a knockin' on my mother's door
Singin' "Come on, mother, ain't ya ready to go?" And my mother stooped down, buckled up her shoes And she moved on down by the Jordan stream
And then she shout
"Hallelujah! Done, done my duty!
Got on my travelin' shoes"
Death came a knockin' on my sister's door… Death came a knockin' on my brother's door…
Death came a knockin’ on my neighbor’s door…
Death came a knockin' on my preacher's door… You know when death comes a knockin' on my front door
Singin' "Come on, sister, ain't ya ready to go?"
I'm gonna stoop right down, buckle up my shoes And I'll move on down by the Jordan stream
And then I'll shout "Hallelujah! Done, done my duty!
Got on my travelin' shoes"
George Friedrich DaumerWithouten you No rose can grow: no leave be green If never seen Your sweetest face; No bird have grace Or pow’r to sing; Or anything Be kind, or fair, And you nowhere.
Johann FranckDo not wander, my love, out there in the fields!
The ground would be too wet for your tender feet.
The paths and tracks are all flooded out there, so abundantly have my eyes been weeping.
Vanish, spirits of gloom, for my joyful master, Jesus, enters in. For those who love God even their grief Must become pure delight. Here I may have scorn and derision, but even in the midst of suffering you remain, Jesus, my joy.
What is music if not a means to explore the depths of the human experience? Much music has been made in homage to young love, romantic love, “twitterpatedness,” love of things Divine and of things beautiful. But the task of long term relationships, with peaks, valleys, joys, and sorrows, is less celebrated in the musical canon, likely because it is both difficult and, at times, uncomfortable.
In the Middle is a narrative exploration of the lifelong journey we take in relationships. It begins with a brief prologue: an exhortation to remember that we are all connected to one another from the beginning, from before our first breath we are part of a bigger whole The eyelids open, and a young person gazes longingly across a river to the upper window of a barricaded home, wherein sits the object of their affection. Expressions of young love follow, culminating in a promise of physical, romantic, lifelong commitment. Love continues, slightly more mature, and soon a new object of affection, a child, sofull of energy and wonder, appears. The new parent observes the way in which their child’s loving face makes them feel an even deeper love than they had felt before. Time quickens, and, now just past middle aged, the parent and partner vows to cherish the small things, individual moments that pass so quickly and yet mean so much. Time marches forward again, quicker still, and the person senses that their time with loved ones will soon be at an end. Yet, as they watch their family and friends pass away with dignity and thanks, it gives them strength to face the future. Sitting at their dying partner’s bedside, they whisper a loving plea to stay for a just a bit longer, not wishing yet to be alone. Mourning follows, and the darkness comes, but only for a moment, as the person finally returns to the beginning of all things and their suffering becomes joy again.
