In de supermarkten weet men het ook: sinds enige tijd kun je in sommige frisdrankschappen kaartjes vinden die per drankje aangeven hoeveel suiker erin zit. Van de 7 genomineerde docenten heeft een jury bestaand uit een student van iedere studievereniging van de faculteit de winnaar, die pas drie jaar bij de Universiteit Leiden werkzaam is, gekozen.

Voorwoord Met grote verbazing keek ik met de redactie naar de lijst met thema’s van vorige Origins. Iemand had tijdens de vergadering het thema ‘duurzaamheid’ voorgesteld, waar velen met grote zelfverzekerdheid tegenin waren gegaan; dit onderwerp was ongetwijfeld al eens behandeld in een van de vorige Origins. In principe was dit inderdaad zo, aangezien de themalijst ons vertelde dat editie 7.3 in het teken stond van ‘Environmental sustainability’. Dit is echter alweer zo’n 5 jaar geleden, de tijd waarin je een bachelor en master zou kunnen afronden. Duurzaamheid is een onderwerp wat ontzettend belangrijk is en blijft, aangezien de meeste problemen nog niet zijn opgelost. Vandaar dat we het er met de redactie snel over eens waren: wij gaan voor duurzaamheid. Lees dus snel verder om meer te weten te komen over de Plastic Soup Surfer (p. 8), bekijk wat Leiden doet aan duurzaamheid (p. 28) en hang de aarde, waar we het allemaal voor doen, op in je kamer (p. 16)! Daarbij is een gedeelte van Origin vernieuwt. De ‘Betavraagbaak’ heeft plaatsgemaakt voor een nieuwe rubriek, namelijk ‘Origin zoekt uit!’, waarin de redactieleden thuisexperimenten uitvoeren of proefkonijnen spelen om brandende vragen te beantwoorden. ‘Uit den ouden doosch’ zien jullie deze editie ook niet terug, maar hiervoor is onze mini-krant ‘De oorsprong’ in de plaatsgekomen met korte artikelen die je snel tussen de colleges door kan lezen. Verder lijkt het de redactie leuk om meer interactie te hebben met jullie, de Originlezers! Like ons dan ook op Facebook, zodat je leuke posts op je tijdlijn krijgt!

Longontsteking binnen 35 jaar dodelijker dan kanker? Toen in 1928 penicilline werd ontdekt, kon niemand overzien tegen welke gevaren de mensheid nog geen 100 jaar later aan zou lopen. Hoe staat het er met de antibiotica anno 2017 voor? Welke consequenties heeft het hedendaags gebruik van antibiotica voor ons? Hoe moeten mensen het antibioticagebruik veranderen om de duurzaamheid ervan te bewaren? Zonder drastische maatregelen kan een simpele longontsteking rond 2050 dodelijker zijn dan dat kanker nu is. Antibioticaresistentie: de gevreesde werkelijkheid Bij toeval ontdekte Alexander Fleming in 1928 dat de aanwezige sporen van een kleine, groene schimmel, Penicilliumchrysogenum, de groei van bacteriën tegenhield of zelfs de bacteriën doodde.1 De stof penicilline werd vervolgens het belangrijkste bestanddeel voor antibiotica. In de loop van de 20e eeuw werd het gebruik van antibiotica binnen de geneeskunde razend populair. Hierdoor werd de ziekte tuberculose zelfs bijna uitgeroeid. Echter, de hoge effectiviteit en beschikbaarheid van antibiotica zorgde al snel voor overmatig gebruik.2,3,4 Dit had tot gevolg dat veel bacteriën resistent werden tegen de verschillende antibiotica. Deze resistentie is vandaag de dag dus geen toekomstvrees meer; het gebeurt nu, in elke regio van de wereld en kan iedereen, van elke leeftijd, achtergrond, of leefgewoonte treffen.5 Tegenwoordig sterven er jaarlijks ruim 50.000 mensen aan infecties als gevolg van antibioticaresistentie in enkel de Verenigde Staten en Europa.4 Over de hele wereld zijn dit zelfs 700.000 sterfgevallen per jaar. Wanneer er geen

drastische maatregelen worden genomen, waarschuwt The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention voor een stijging tot wel 10.000.000 sterfgevallen in 2050 wereldwijd als gevolg van de antibioticaresistentie. Toenemende resistentie volgens het “domino-effect” Een van de voornaamste redenen dat antibioticaresistentie een steeds groter probleem is geworden, heeft te maken met de makkelijke toegankelijkheid van antibiotica. Zeker in high-incomecountries (HICs) heeft dit geleid tot overmatig gebruik van antibiotica. Bovendien worden er steeds vaker sterkere second- en third-generation antibiotica ingezet voor het bestrijden van bacteriële infecties. Dit betekent dat ook deze zwaardere antibiotica steeds sneller zijn effectiviteit verliezen.6 Tegelijkertijd is er voor patiënten in lowen middle-incomecountries (LMICs) vaak geen antibiotica beschikbaar.7 Dit komt doordat er in deze landen geen tot weinig regelgeving is met betrekking tot de farmaceutische productie van de antibiotica. Dit leidt tot een ander groot probleem: in deze landen worden antibiotica van lage kwaliteit toegediend, met als gevolg verdere stimulatie van

antibioticaresistentie en een toenemende vraag naar de second- en thirdgeneration antibiotica.8,9 In delen van de wereld als Afrika en Azië wordt daarom verwacht dat er rond 2050 de meeste sterfgevallen zullen optreden als gevolg van antibioticaresistentie.

Bovendien is de verspreiding van resistente bacteriën in deze landen erg groot vanwege onder andere vervuild water, overbevolking, besmet voedsel en het gebrek aan goede hygiëne.10 Hierdoor is er overgevoeligheid voor infectieziektes, waarna vervolgens het domino-effect weer optreedt: meer mensen worden ziek waardoor meer antibiotica wordt voorgeschreven met als gevolg meer kans op resistentie. Daarnaast spelen de financiële regelingen in zowel HICs als LMICs voor het verstrekken van antibiotica een grote rol in dit maatschappelijke probleem. Verkoop van antibiotica levert namelijk zowel farmaceutische bedrijven als zorgverzekeraars erg veel geld op. Daarom wordt antibiotica steeds vaker (te veel) voorgeschreven wat weer bijdraagt aan het ontstaan van resistentie.11 Wanneer de dominostenen kunnen “blijven vallen”, zullen bepaalde medische behandelingen en ingrepen die vandaag de dag simpel zijn uit te voeren, rond 2050 erg onveilig of zelfs niet meer mogelijk zijn, waarschuwt de World Health Organization.12 Grote operaties, kankerbehandelingen en zelfs een “simpele” longontsteking en andere infecties

bijvoorbeeld kunnen binnen een kleine 35 jaar meer levens eisen dan dat kanker nu doet.4 Keep the antibioics sustainable! Om ervoor te zorgen dat de sterk toenemende resistentie de das om wordt gedaan, zullen er ten eerste nieuwe afspraken gemaakt moeten worden tussen zorgverzekeraars, farmaceutische bedrijven en de ziekenhuizen die antibiotica voorschrijven.13 Er zal minder moeten worden gefocust op het behalen van winst; de zorg voor gezondheid moet in het middelpunt komen te staan.

Daarnaast moet er over de hele wereld een balans worden gevonden tussen het voorschrijven van antibiotica en anderen toereikende medicatie zodat overmatig gebruik wordt tegengegaan.

Belangrijk is ook het bevorderen van de hygiëne en het stimuleren van voorlichting over het gebruik van antibiotica in LICs. Hier zal tenslotte de meeste winst te behalen zijn. Dit zijn wellicht veel uitdagingen om de toegang en het gebruik van antibiotica terug te dringen, maar identificatie van het probleem maakt duidelijk dat onmiddellijke actie nodig is om ook op de lange termijn het gebruik van antibiotica mogelijk te maken en ervoor te zorgen dat antibiotica een duurzame medicatie blijft.

Tijd voor versnelling Om praktische redenen heb ik het onderwerp van mijn verhaal niet in de titel genoemd.

Bij mijn dispuut (Het Zoutkorrel) is het woord ook al verboden. Af en toe kom ik er zonder ‘straf-adje’ mee weg als ik het beschrijf als het D-woord. Het woord trekt alleen mensen die het al belangrijk vinden en schrikt mensen af die er moe van zijn. Het D-woord is helaas



helemaal niet leuk of mooi, het is een onderwerp dat de sfeer snel kan laten omslaan, net als vegetarisch eten, minder energie gebruiken, minder afval creëren en korter douchen. Wij weten allemaal ergens wel dat het belangrijk is, maar er invulling aan geven komt later wel. Bij het benoemen van ‘duurzaamheid’ zet ik mijzelf voor velen in hetzelfde rijtje als jehova’s, straatverkopers en zeikende huisgenoten. Toch start ik met het deprimerende verhaal, omdat urgentie iets is dat constant moet worden verkregen. Daarna kom ik met een wat optimistischere kijk en bespreek ik wat onze universiteit, de faculteit W&N, jij en ik kunnen doen. Nu komt het deprimerende verhaal. Wees niet bang,het duurt maar twee alinea’s. Op dit moment is de concentratie CO2 in de atmosfeer ongeveer 400 ppm. De laatste keer dat er op

aarde zoveel CO2 in de lucht zat, was 3 miljoen jaar geleden, de zeespiegel was 40 meter hoger, er was geen noordpool en de Sahara was groen. Wij hebben gezamenlijk in Parijs afgesproken om onder een temperatuurstijging van twee graden te blijven. Hierbij kozen wij voor 450 ppm, wat ons met 50% zekerheid onder die twee graden houdt. Geen persoon zou ooit een brug oversteken met 50% kans op instorten, maar als samenleving kiezen wij daar wel voor. Die twee graden zelf hebben al enorme gevolgen op de voedselvoorziening, biodiversiteit, zeespiegel, migratiestromingen en nog onvoorstelbaar veel meer. Veel van deze problemen zijn met elkaar en met temperatuurstijging verbonden, ik zal er een paar noemen: Afgelopen jaar is er een recordaantal van 6000 km2 bosgrond verbrand in Noord-Amerika, het roet slaat neer op de Noordpool en versnelt daarmee het smelten van de steeds kleiner wordende Noordpool. Gevaarlijker nog, in het zuiden knaagt warm water van onderaf aan de grootste gletsjer van Oost-Antarctica. Dat is landijs, dus

verhoogt het de zeespiegel. Syrië had de vijf jaren voor de oorlog een aanhoudende droogte, een miljoen boeren trokken naar de stad. Het wordt door veel wetenschappers gezien als een van de belangrijkste stressoren die heeft geleid tot de spanningen nu. Ook California kampt met meer droogte dan ooit, terwijl het verantwoordelijk is voor 25% van de voedselvoorziening van Amerika. Hiernaast zijn de oceanen al 30% zuurder in vergelijking met 1850. Naast dat dit slecht is voor koraal, de broedkamers van veel vis, is het ook slecht voor schaaldieren; het basisvoedsel van veel organismes (inclusief wijzelf). Minstens zo alarmerend is dat 2/3 tot 4/5 van de kolen, olie en gas in de grond moet blijven zitten als we onder de twee graden willen blijven. Kortom, ik maak mij oprecht enorme zorgen. Duurzaamheid, het D-woord, wordt vaak als heilig woord der oplossingen gezien. Een terugkerend fenomeen is echter dat wanneer mensen over duurzaamheid gaan nadenken, ze ineens zien dat haast niets 100% duurzaam is. Elke hap vlees, elk flesje dat je weggooit, elk kledingstuk dat je koopt en zelfs elke keer dat je uitademt heb je impact op onze blauwgroene bol. Veel mensen leven in de illusie dat duurzaamheid betekent dat je geen enkele impact mag hebben. Dat je haast in een grot zou moeten leven en gras zou moeten eten. Vaak verwijzen mensen naar de natuur die volledig circulair zou zijn. Als dit waar was dan hadden Paleontologen niets te bestuderen, dan hadden wij geen fossiele brandstof gehad en zou het tijdperk tussen 14266 miljoen jaar terug nooit het ‘Krijt’ heten. Ook de zuurstof die ons leven mogelijk maakt is weer een afvalstof van planten. Wij moeten af van het woord duurzaam en wat beters verzinnen. Voor het gemak draai ik het woord om en maak er ‘niet-duurzaam’ van. Wanneer je dit

VAN BIOLOOG NAAR PLASTIC SOUP SURFER

Surfend naar een duurzame wereld

“Plastic afval is iets waar ik tijdens het surfen steeds weer van schrik”, vertelt Merijn Tinga, inmiddels bekend als de Plastic Soup Surfer. In de zomer van 2014 kitesurfte Merijn van België naar Duitsland op een zelfgemaakt surfboard van verzamelde PET-flesjes. Vervolgens, in september 2016, surfte Merijn over de Noordzee naar Engeland. Met deze acties trekt hij aandacht voor het probleem van zwerfafval. Daarnaast startte Merijn een petitie voor de uitbreiding van statiegeld op kleine PET-flesjes.

Ik moest studeren van mijn ouders. Het liefste was ik gaan reizen. Toen heb ik simpelweg afgestreept wat ik allemaal niet wilde. Uiteindelijk bleven biologie en cognitieve artificiële intelligentie over. Dat laatste klonk wel cool, maar was te veel computerwerk en in Utrecht. Leiden was dicht bij het strand en omdat ik toen al surfte, was dat belangrijk voor me. Biologie trok me daarnaast ook omdat ik toen bezig was met “de waarheid”, althans om te ontdekken hoe alles in elkaar zit. Ook is het natuurlijk hartstikke mooi dat deze studie zowel theoretisch als praktisch is. Ik was lid van Augustinus én, net als alle biologen in die tijd, van Catena, omdat het toen nog om de hoek zat van biologie. Ik kan me ook nog goed herinneren dat ik vaak ’s avonds in de UB zat te studeren. Om kwart voor 10 schrok ik me dan helemaal wezenloos van het belletje en de omroeper. Zo geconcentreerd was ik bezig met de stof. Daarnaast gingen we vaak de hortus in. Studeren met vrienden en tussendoor discussiëren tussen het groen. De hortus voelde dan echt als ons wereldje. Tijdens mijn stage in Togo miste ik mijn vriendin, dat was wel een moeilijk moment. Over moeilijke momenten gesproken, misschien wel het allermoeilijkste moment was het schrijven van een scriptie. Uiteindelijk heb ik me twee weken opgesloten bij mijn ouders in Groningen om die af te schrijven. Even helemaal geen afleiding en echt alleen

maar werken aan mijn scriptie. Voor mijn gevoel was ik niet voorbereid op wat erna kwam. Op een gegeven moment ben je klaar met je studie en dan sta je wel zo van, en nu? Als je kiest voor onderzoek of het onderwijs, is het pad duidelijk. Uiteindelijk belandde ik toen ook voor de klas, maar na twee jaar ben ik gestopt. Ik denk omdat ik eigenlijk nog te jong was om voor de klas te staan. Toen ben ik naar Marokko gefietst om een half jaar op een strand te zitten en te surfen. Eindelijk deed ik iets wat ik altijd al wilde. Alles heeft wel een doel. Natuurlijk zijn er dingen waar ik achteraf spijt van heb en die ik anders had willen doen, maar dit soort keuzes vallen daar wat mij betreft echt niet onder. Zelfontplooiing is eigenlijk het allerbelangrijkste. Zolang je niet stilstaat en jezelf blijft ontwikkelen, is alles goed. Het zat er altijd al in, maar in Marokko realiseerde ik het me pas goed: ik wilde iets met kunst gaan doen. Sindsdien ben ik dan ook actief als kunstenaar, het liefst betrek ik de kunst op de mens en de maatschappij. Plastic zwerfaval is iets waar ik als surfer elke keer weer van schrik. Maar kunst is vaak erg abstract en het viel me op dat als ik duidelijk vertel wat ik er mee wil zeggen, de boodschap beter aankomt. Zo is de Plastic Soup Surfer geboren. Sinds 2014 doe ik daarom loodzware recordpogingen om aandacht te vragen voor het probleem van plastic zwerfafval in zee.

De ochtend na een gemiddeld studentenfeest (foto Eelk Colmjon) Het is mooi hoe je als Plastic Soup Surfer inspireert. De natuur heeft geen stem en daarom moeten wij haar stem zijn. De ‘Ocean Cleanup’ van Boyan Slat was belangrijk voor de bewustwording. Die kwam op in 2014, precies toen ik met mijn eigen surfboard kwam. Onderzoeken hebben laten zien hoe snel plastic uiteenvalt, dus het is niet logisch om te wachten tot het midden op de oceaan ligt. Het moet in mijn ogen daarom meer om preventie gaan. Statiegeld op kleine PET-flesjes is een maatregel die het verschil kan maken en ook succesvol is doorgevoerd in Duitsland, Scandinavië en delen van Amerika. Opruimen van afval, zoals de Ocean Cleanup doet, is veilig voor mensen. Je hoeft zelf niks te veranderen. Je geeft gewoon wat geld en het wordt voor je

gedaan. Preventie betekent daarentegen dat ook jij wat moet doen. Jij moet je leefstijl aanpassen en dat is natuurlijk niet voor iedereen even makkelijk. Om mensen te inspireren zo te veranderen is daarom ook best een uitdaging. Deze bewustwording dient zich ook binnen de studenten- en studieverenigingen nog verder te ontwikkelen. Een goed voorbeeld is het beleid omtrent plastic bekertjes. Het is makkelijk om je bekertjes op de grond te gooien en de dag erna door een ploeg te laten opruimen onder het mom van ‘veiligheid’. Maar juist die studenten worden later voor veel mensen rolmodellen. Straks zijn zij de mensen die op veel plekken het beleid maken. Die moet je niet leren dat je alles gewoon op de grond kan gooien.

Gelukkig is de gemeente Leiden al wel bezig dit beleid te veranderen. Zo gebruiken zij steeds vaker statiegeldbekers bij evenementen. Ik vind het daarom ook schandalig dat de universiteit nog wegwerpbekertjes heeft. Daarmee moedig je aan dat mensen te gemakkelijk over het gebruik van plastic blijven denken. Dat zijn hele slechte signalen wat mij betreft. Docenten en studenten kunnen immers prima zelf een kopje meenemen. Ook de universiteit zou hier een voortrekkersrol in kunnen spelen. Het is eigenlijk net als het verbod op plastic tasjes. Binnen twee maanden was iedereen gewend om zijn eigen tas mee te nemen. Je moet iets een paar keer doen en dan zit het in je systeem. Als je niets doet, verandert er in ieder geval niets. Dat werkt ook zo met statiegeld. Als consument krijg je zoveel informatie dat het soms lastig is om te begrijpen wat voor effect iets heeft. Uit onderzoek is bijvoorbeeld gebleken dat maar 19% wordt gerecycled van het ingezamelde plastic in de containers van ‘Plastic Heroes’. Waarom je het dan toch moet doen? Omdat 19% toch nog een hele hoop plastic afval is en omdat het scheiden van plastic je bewust maakt van hoeveel je zoal gebruikt. Natuurlijk is duurzaamheid veel breder dan afval, denk bijvoorbeeld aan groene energie of betere isolatie. Maar dat is het mooie van afval, dat gaat letterlijk door je hand. Op het moment van schrijven (januari 2016) heeft Merijn zo’n 31.000 van de benodigde 40.000 handtekeningen verzameld voor uitbreiding van statiegeld op kleine PET-flesjes. PORN WRECKS THE BRAIN Multiple cases have been reported of women being raped by pornaddicted men or of freak porn accidents where someone was watching it. Is porn really just a fantasy or could it be harmful for your brain? There have been several cases where the fantasy of porn merged into the reality of people’s lives. Just a few examples: a young man threw a pregnant woman off her bike and tried to rape her, because he had seen porn involving pregnant women (White, 2016); a tenyear-old boy raped an eight-year-old girl, because he was addicted to porn (Tahir, 2013); another addict watched porn while driving and was killed in an accident (Boyle, 2016). To find out why these people did what they did, we need to dive into the chemistry and complexity of the human brain. Our brain is what neuroscientists call ‘neuroplastic’: pathways in the brain can be changed, weakened or enhanced, either by compounds like drugs and alcohol or by certain behaviours. These behaviours may include eating disorders, video game addiction and, perhaps the worst of all, pornography addiction. Watching porn actually is addictive, as was shown by over twenty studies (Wilson, 2010). But how does that work? You might think that porn couldn’t be that harmful. It’s ‘just a fantasy’, isn’t it? Well, think again. When we view sexually explicit con-

tent, we get aroused by the images or clips. Although watching porn in itself does not harmfully affect your brain, what is done with the arousal is essential. Masturbation, often following the arousal, and orgasm bring forth a massive chemical cocktail in the human brain, including dopamine. This cocktail gives our brain a ‘high’. Importantly, it also makes our brain remember how to get that high again. But why does the brain remember so well that we can get that ‘nice feeling’ from watching porn? Why isn’t getting a good grade addictive, for instance? Our grey matter contains many chemicals, receptors and complicated networks of nerves, enzymes, proteins etc. One of the brain’s superheroes is the molecule dopamine. It gives you focus, highlights what’s important at a specific moment and opens rewarding circuits in the brain if something pleasurable is experienced. In other words, we wouldn’t make anything of our lives without dopamine. So what does this have to do with pornography? In his book The Porn Circuit, internet safety consultant Sam

Black describes what happens in your brain step by step (Black, 2013). When you start to watching porn, dopamine is in the brain. Then, the act of masturba-tion releases testosterone, also known as the ‘man hormone’, and norepinephrine. Dopamine, testosterone and norepinephrine provide an extreme focus. After a while, oxytocin, often called the ‘lovehormone’, and vasopressin are made in the brain. They give a feeling of ‘connection’ with the porno­graphic images. At the climax, endogenic opiates, like endorphin, are emitted. Together with dopamine they reduce feelings of stress and fear. Finally, serotonin, a mood and sleepneurotransmitter, makes you feel calm and content. “You can compare this neurological process with a walk through the forest”, illustrates Black. “If you take a stroll through the woods and use the same paths over and over again, you will carve a clearly visible way on the ground. The same goes for pornography: if you watch it a lot, the neurological pathways that are ‘walked on’

will be carved into the brain more and more deeply. The brain gets ‘rewired’.” There is, however, another aspect in this process responsible for the addictive nature of porn. A high consumption of porn means a high level of brain chemicals. And your brain may not be able to keep up. When it gets an overload of these chemicals too frequently, some of the receptors will shut down. This means that the brain is limited in the uptake of for instance dopamine. This process is called ‘inhibition’. Due to the inhibition of receptors, you need to watch more porn or even more extreme versions of porn to get that same level of satisfaction. That’s why themes like BDSM/torture or rape suddenly will look more appealing for some, because they need new material to get that ‘high’ in their brain. And when more and more is needed, an addiction is at hand. “The molecular switch that kicks in with porn consumption, called Delta FosB, is observed in every addiction,” Gary Wilson explained in his TEDxTalk ‘The Great Porn Experiment’ in Glasgow on May 16, 2012 (Wilson, 2012). “I can’t emphasise enough that every addiction shows these same brain changes.” Wilson is the author of the book ‘Your brain on porn: Internet pornography and the emerging science of addiction’. He has

compiled all the current studies on his site ‘YourBrainOnPorn.com’ (Wilson, 2010). In Wilson’s TEDxTalk, he warns about the addictive potential of porn, especially for teenagers. Nowadays, watching porn starts at a very young age. Some kids get their first ‘porn experience’ before their twelfth birthday, and before their eighteenth 90% of boys and 60% of girls have been exposed to internet porn. This is very troublesome for the 21st century kids, because teenage brains “are at their peak concerning dopamine production and neuroplasticity”, Wilson explains further. This means that they have the highest risk of incurring an internet porn addiction, or any addiction for that matter.

availability, and accessibility of porn. Our neurological pathways get hijacked by the billions of images freely distributed over the internet. Eventually, the borders between fantasy and reality will be nothing but blurred lines. So, yes, porn is harmful for the brain. The shortterm satisfaction will in the long run turn into dissatisfaction. And what person in their right mind would want to be dissatisfied?

Because this makes getting pleasure so simple and quick, the natural reward system is being shut down, meaning longterm brain rewards aren’t good enough anymore for the brain. And exactly the same goes for marital sex and pornography: sex with your partner is rewarded naturally, while porn instantly fulfils the need for ‘happiness’, nullifying the reward system.”

We frenziedly patent and innovate, we seek to unchange or at least not change the world, all to bring about something called sustainability. The word itself, like any worth its salt, has taken on a life of its own. It does not mean one thing, and whenever a meaning is pinned down it likely won't keep long. And so, when we choose to sustain or act sustainably, we must wonder: do we only concern ourselves with our species or does it matter to us that if we would undo ourselves we should at least leave something good behind for all the other species? What, exactly, do we seek to sustain? Answers are not, and cannot be, definitive. We must stare at the world and decide by some metric what we wish to keep, and what we can put on the back burner. Let's start with three cases, each bearing its own lessons: one of a toad, one of a sloth, and one of a tree.

The Toad

SUSTAINABILITY

In 1935, the Australian sugar cane business was booming. Expansion led to the proliferation of pests, most notably the dread cane beatle (Dermolepida albohirtum), native to Australia and excessively fond of sugar cane. Whilst one may think that biological pest control is a thing of recent years, it didn't take long for the Australians to catch on to the fact that South American cane plantations were thriving because of the presence of the native cane toad (Rhinella marina) which takes care of pests like nobody's business. And so, in August 1935, over 100 toads were released near the northeastern coast. The story of the cane toads has become an ecological parable. The toads feralised and began to spread along the coast. Wherever it was at all moist, the cane toad appeared. It drove native amphibians to the brink of extinction, or over it. It spreads parasites and destruction, and there's no way to stop it. Bad news, to be sure. Bad news for Australia's unique, long-suffering ecology. But what of the toads? The toads are doing just great - so great in fact that they've begun forming their own, brand new ecosystem. For five years, evolutionary biologist Rick Shine's team looked at toads in one spot, all the way up north, near Darwin. They headed there at a time when the toads hadn't arrived... yet. The team started taking measurements from day 0 to determine the speed of the invasion. It came to a rather alarming 55 km per year. But what they also saw was that the toads, all descended from those early few, were no longer homogenous. At the invasion front toads were larger,

more muscular, some moving twenty kilometres in a month - whereas the toads that followed the front were smaller, slower and more likely to settle down. In a matter of seventy years, a hundred toads have created a toad ecology, distinct and entirely new. What was before slowly recedes beneath the new world order. Toads, as far as the eye sees. With such abundance, how long will it be until equilibrium is reached? A thousand years? Time alone will tell. For now, barring some new breakthrough in disease engineering (which is being looked into), the cane toad is in Australia to stay. There are currently over 200 million toads hopping about, wreaking havoc wherever they go. Toads, all the way down.

The Sloth

I did not know that thou wert dead before; I did not feel the grief I did sustain; The greater stroke astonisheth the more; Astonishment takes from us sense of pain. -Henry Constable The Long Now Foundation, which hopes “to provide a counterpoint to today's accelerating culture” and “to foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years”, has propositions all worked out to revive the woolly mammoth

(Mammuthus primigenius). The foundation enthusiastically describes various experiments that have yielded elephant-mammoth hybrid cells in petri dishes - but its brief on the reasons for resurrecting the mammoth is just that, brief. Besides the usual “who knows what we could learn”, only one theory, proposed by Russian geophysicist Sergei Zimov, is trotted out. It states that large herbivores once maintained steppes where now lie forests and tundras, and that steppes reflect more sunlight, lowering the temperature although it is admitted that this may have had more to do with the amount of snow and ice in the Pleistocene. Further reading rouses the suspicion that the mammoth is an easy sell and not much more. The amount of knowledge we'll gain is astounding and the impact on arctic ecology may even be good - but similar arguments can be made for the return of any species. All we know for now is that the mammoth is an animal with allure: a popular animal the public would be willing to spend some money on reviving. Consider, however, what the Long Now Foundation does not. At this very moment, in the living deserts of the western United States, ecologists witness the slow demise of the Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia),

named so by Mormon settlers who were reminded of the biblical figure reaching his arms up to the sky in prayer. Its golf-ball-sized fruits are dispersed only barely, eaten and excreted only by chance passersby... it seems as though something large and fructivorous is missing from the picture. 12,000 years ago, in those very same deserts, the last of the pony-sized Shasta ground sloths (Nothrotheriops shastense) died. It left behind ecosystems of which its species was an integral part: mummified sloth dung teeming with Joshua tree seeds, found in the caves of the easternmost deserts, show that the tree and the sloth once depended on one another. 12,000 years, incidentally, marks the moment at which human settlers arrived in the Americas, and it seems that the sloths disappeared right after the first big game hunters appeared. As with the mammoth, it is suspected that we ate this species to death. What can we suspect from the above information? The sloth played an important role in an environment that still exists, though it exists on life support. We know of one way the sloth still matters, and restoring it to the deserts will restore at least that part of it. Furthermore, as we hunted it to its death, it is most likely tasty. In 2015, the United States counted some 77 million heads of beef cattle; these are animals that did not evolve on the arid plains of Texas, Kansas or California, and do not thrive on what the desert offers them. What of 77 million sloths? Of herds of them, lumbering about in what any cattleman would now consider useless land? Thriving, reviving the desert as they go? It would take a greater effort to bring back the sloth than it would to resurrect the mammoth, it is true. The sloth's closest living relatives are considerably smaller and a 50/50 hybrid

would not likely work - but there are clever, hybridising ways and really, if the size difference was the big issue we'd have done it by now. Besides it, all hurdles are the same as for the mammoth or any other mammal. Let's do it, for until we do, the fading Joshua tree continues as it has for 12,000 years to supplicate, its branches heavenward, for its sloth to return. Science is sometimes accused of trying to play god - this may be our first opportunity to answer a prayer.

The Tree

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. -Jane Austen Take a trip to your local botanical gardens, find someone who looks like they belong, and ask for Wollemia (tell them I sent you). If your local gardens do house a specimen or two, have a good gander at it. Admire its elegant, vaguely palm-like habit and its trademark double rows of needle-like leaves. Likely you'll see some saplings sprouting near or on the main trunk. Wollemia nobilis, called the Wollemi pine, has been a mainstay of botanical gardens since 2006. Full disclosure: it's not a pine though it is a conifer, and it's more closely related to groups that had their heyday in the Triassic and Jurassic eras, many dozens of millions of years ago. You may know some of these oddball trees, like the monkey puzzle or the Cook pine. Another peculiar thing about the Wollemi pine, a plant that can be found in botanical gardens the world over, is that it's extinct. September 1994, Wollemi National Park in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. A park officer comes across a grove of unfamiliar trees. It's quickly discovered that

they've never been described by science, and their location is kept secret to protect them from tourism, as fewer than a hundred trees are known to exist. But rarity, of course, is not extinction. That verdict did not come until 2003, when extensive testing revealed that the trees were genetically identical, clones or grafts of the same individual - one male tree, unable to selfpollinate. Only one Wollemi pine remains. Ambitious botanists have looked long and hard, but it seems there's shallow chance of a female grove of clones hiding somewhere in the Blue Mountains, biding its time. No one knows what happened to Wollemia, whether it was struck by disaster, or steadily fragmented by the rising of mountains, or just the victim of unlucky winds, spreading their pollen just in the wrong direction for long enough that only one tree remains, unpollinating and unpollinated. And so we sustain the Wollemi pine, a lonely bachelor forever alone, until we ourselves are no longer capable of car-

ing for it. In hopes, perhaps, that we may just stumble across a female tree for it to reinvigorate the species - but under the assumption that we never shall. The Wollemi pine is extinct, a dead end: doomed to be forever grafted, forever cloned. It has nowhere to go but sideways.

The end

Whether you're a toad, ending the world to make a new one, a sloth, whose world ended long ago whilst continuing diminished, or a tree who has only to wait for the end... what must, in that very end, be sustained? Is it sustainable to change an ecosystem after 12,000 years, or to exterminate a species that is more suited to its environment than any of its peers, or to keep a lonely tree, extinct already, forever on life support? Here I fail you, dear reader, as I do not have the solution to the problem of the toad, the sloth and the tree. Would that I did as I'm sure many people would like to hear about it - all I can give you is the following. Answers lie in what we feel we wish the world to be; some philosophical foundation to the decisions we make. Do we, in our solutions, seek beauty, which is in the mind of the beholder? May it be harmony, of which nature knows nothing? We certainly don't like quarrel and competition - but

they're what make for great beauty and dazzling complexity... which may lead us closer to an answer. Complexity: for as many forms to exist, perhaps in strife and hideous, but glorious in their madness. In the final passage of his life's work On The Origin of Species, Darwin declared that “there is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.” Grandeur then, finally, may be the metric - or even more fundamentally: a sense of grandeur may be the thing we're sustaining. Impossible to grasp, yet so essential to what we are that scientists devote their lives to mapping it in all of its forms. And that, unlike so much talk of the fate of nature, is an optimistic story. It matters not where we look or how, what we test or why; our deepening understanding ever deepens our marvel, our sense of grandeur, and if we could only tell the whole world about how we felt, sustainability wouldn't seem as abstract or distant a goal as it seems right now. What seems grand to you? What solution would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up? What, dear reader, would sustain not just nature itself, but also that unrestrained grandeur of nature without which we would and could not exist? For it is there, and not before, that sustainability begins.

Tolerating the extremes We live in a world of fantastic animals with colourful patterns, magnificent defence mechanisms and extraordinary mating habits. It isn’t necessary to search on other planets for alien-like creatures because we already share our planet with animals tolerating extreme temperatures. In this article, I will tell you something about a rather unknown but interesting little creature; the Triops. Triops is a genus of small crustaceans in the order Notostraca. Some species are considered living fossils, from which the first fossils are traced back to the late Carboniferous, 300 million years ago. They live in temporary pools that dry out during the summer. Most Triops live up to only 90 days and can tolerate a broad pH range of 6-10. Triops are also able to withstand very high temperatures most living organisms wouldn’t survive. This is why they can be found anywhere on the planet, except for Antarctica.

Living in harsh conditions

Dr. J. Rzóska was one of the first scientists who investigated the temperature tolerance of Triops eggs in diapause, a physiological state of dormancy. His investigation leads us to rain pools in Khartoum, the capital of the Republic of Sudan. The environment in which those Triops live is very harsh, to quote Rzóska: “[…] its annual rainfall averages about 12 or 15 cm, almost all falling within 2 months in late summer. Between Sep-

tember and May there is no rain and the skies are generally cloudless. The extensive rain pools that form during the rainy season last about 4 to 6 weeks (depending on the frequency of rainstorms) before drying for the rest of the year. The mud in the pools first dries to a cracked crust before disintegrating to a dust that may reach a temperature of 80C during the heat of the day between March and May. Even in midwinter in January the dust may be so hot in the afternoon that bare feet are blistered by contact for only 2 or 3 minutes.” (Rzóska, J. 1961) Would you expect a crustacean to survive such conditions? Nor did many biologists, and it was Dr. D. B. Carlisle who continued the investigation. He was interested to find out the highest temperatures the Triops eggs could withstand (Carlisle D.B. 1968). In his investigation, Triops eggs were hatched from mud that had been placed dry in an incubator for 1 week at 80°C, and also from mud samples that had been kept for 16 hours in an oven at 98±1°C.

When the eggs in the mud were incubated for 15 minutes at 102°C, they did not survive. When the mud samples were placed under vacuum which caused the water to boil at 70°C, the eggs did not survive 30-minute exposure to 75°C. When mud samples were placed in a pressure vessel and subjected to pressures causing the water to boil at 105°C, the eggs withstood 16 hours at 103±1°C but were killed within 15 minutes at 106°C. from wet mud kept overnight at 50°C but not from wet mud kept at 60°C.

Desiccation

Carlisle concluded that desiccated eggs survived much higher temperatures than eggs after wetting, the eggs can tolerate temperatures within 1°C of the local boiling point of water and the Triops eggs did not survive the temperature of boiling water. He mentions: ‘The mechanism of death in desiccated eggs must therefore involve the boiling of any water retained within the eggs: when the water boils, the eggs are killed; if it does not reach boiling point they survive.’ (Carlisle D.B. 1968) His conclusion leads to my main question: what is preventing Triops eggs to denature at high temperatures, causing the Triops not to die?

Anhydrobiosis

Normally, a protein works best under certain conditions such as temperature and pH. When for example the temperature is increased, denaturation will often take place, making the protein ineffective. Because of this phenomenon, you would expect a Triops egg to denature at a temperature a couple of degrees higher than the temperature inside the egg, not at 98°C.

The answer to my question could lay in the fact that Triops eggs go in a so-called anhydrobiosis when dehydrated to survive their severe natural environment (Ito C., Goto S.G., Numata H. 2013). Anhydrobiosis, "life

without water" is the desiccation tolerance observed in certain invertebrate animals. Invertebrates undergoing anhydrobiosis often contract into a smaller shape. During desiccation, various proteins like heat shock proteins and Late Embryogenesis Abundant proteins accumulate in anhydrobiotic organisms during desiccation (Cornette and Kikawada, 2011; Rebecchi et al., 2007). Heat shock proteins help stabilize new proteins to ensure correct folding or by helping to refold proteins that were damaged by the cell stress; Late Embryogenesis Abundant proteins protect other proteins from aggregation as a result of desiccation or osmotic stresses.

These proteins may have an important role for vitrification of Triops eggs (the formation of a biological ‘glass’ layer around the egg) as suggested in previous reports (Gusev O, Cornette R, Kikawada T, Okuda T (2011)).

Conclusion

Triops can survive the high temperatures best as eggs when the eggs go in an anhydrobiosis. The anhydrobiosis would probably help the egg create a glass-like protection, and thereby, with the help of various proteins, denaturation won’t take place. Yeah, evolution rocks!

Why were they so against something that would produce clean energy? That’s where my interest in energy and society stems from.

What is the driving force that leads to community opposition to wind farms?

Featuring Bríd Walsh Bríd Walsh is an assistant professor at LUC in The Hague. We met her in her small, homely office in the Hague, which is just big enough for 3 people. It is decorated with small wind turbines standing next to a mini transformer doll, which fit very well with the topic of our conversation, sustainability. What sparkled your interest in sustainability?

Well, that’s a long story! I grew up on a dairy farm and a forestry plantation in the middle of nowhere in rural West of Ireland. My family have lived in that same place for generations, and the history can be traced back hundreds of years. There is a strong sense of community and a sense of attachment to place. I spent my youth on that farm, walking the length and breadth of the forestry – to be fair, there was not much else to do. We had a ring fort, a river, and a small lake within the forestry as well, which provided endless hours of entertainment for myself and my

brother. I suppose I have a connection to that land, that place, and an appreciation for the environment and everything that lived within it. When I finished secondary school at seventeen years old, I had no clue what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. I knew there were two things that seemed interesting to me: the sciences and law, but they seemed like uneasy bedfellows at the time. There are no Liberal Arts& Sciences programmes in Ireland. In fact, I’m sure that I had never heard of it at that point! So, what did I do? Well, I started studying law and geography at the National University of Ireland, Galway. When I finished my undergraduate, I had to make a decision about whether to specialise in law or geography. I chose geography because I was fascinated by the big global environmental questions, especially those related to climate change. I moved

to California where I spent two years at UCLA studying a Masters in geography with a focus on climatology. During this time, I also worked on a project exploring sea-ice depletion in Antarctica. After that, I moved back to Ireland where I started a PhD which investigated the social sustainability of wind energy development in Ireland, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Broadly, I was seeking to understand why local communities oppose both commercially owned and community owned wind energy projects. My interest in this topic went all the way back to my childhood. My father was involved in the early days of wind energy in Ireland, back in the 1990s. At that time, people were hesitant about the technology and worried about noise and the impact on the landscape. I was very young, but I remember that it caused considerable problems within our community. People my

In the past, such opposition has been explained as NIMBY (not in my backyard). NIMBY suggests that those who are opposing wind energy in their community would be supportive of wind energy in general. It suggests selfishness on the part of those opposing the project at local level. This simplistic characterisation misses the multitude of reasons as to why community members might oppose a development. Although, the term NIMBY is still used in the media to explain this. So, if NIMBY doesn’t offer a sufficient explanation, what is actually happening? The answer is not so simple with factors such as politics and socio-economics influencing perceptions of wind farms. Another issue is inadequate local involvement in the design and planning phase of the wind farm project. The local consultation processes for large infrastructure processes are often insufficient to engage community members

in a meaningful manner, and often take place too late in the planning process – at a time where the major decisions on siting and design have already been taken. Communities can then feel railroaded over. In Ireland, we see that communities often have a bigger problem with the transmission lines than with the turbines themselves, because these lines go through their land and people are worried about the health impactsof them. In my research, I try to understand how these communities function. More specifically, I tackle questions related to community wind energy. For example, why might a community oppose a community wind farm that is being developed in their locality? What factors shape their perceptions?

What will the effect of Trump’s presidency be on the overall outlook on sustainable energy?

It’s hard to say what exactly will happen over the next 4 years, but it doesn’t look good at the moment. From an international perspective, the US could potentially pull out of the Paris agreement, with the withdrawal process taking a few years. Internally within the US, there are many individual states such as California, Texas and Iowa which are developing renewables at pace. They have made huge strides forward in terms of installed renewable capacity over the past decade. I imagine the momentum generated by this development will continue at State level in the US as these technologies continue to become cheaper. That said, it could be that the transition to sustainable energy systems is slowed down over the next years in the US.

What could the students of the University of Leiden do to contribute to a more sustainable world?

They can eat less meat! It is a good example of one personal change that people can make. The main driver of climate change is still the emissions associated with electricity production and manufacturing industries. But our global agricultural system is responsible for a quarter of the total greenhouse gas emissions. The beef industry is especially carbon intensive.

There are a lot of embedded emissions within the agricultural sector. Take beef, for example. There are emissions associated with the production of the feed that the animals eat in the winter, when they cannot eat grass. There are emissions associated with the slaughtering, processing, and distribution of beef to the customer. As well as the methane produced during their digestion of food. Yes, cow burps and farts are contributing to climate change. In fact, there are researchers working on this here in the Netherlands and further afield. For example, there is a study underway in Australia which is exploring the impact of feeding cows seaweed as opposed to the regular diet and they are expecting a reduction in methane emissions to the tune of 85% or so. The issue with methane is that it has a higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide which means that it absorbs much more energy than carbon dioxide. As part of our Global Challenge: Sustainability course, which is a mandatory course for all of our first year students at LUC, our students calculate their ecological footprint. In that calculation, they discover the emission footprint of their diet, their energy consumption, their travel and their meat consumption. The results are often quite unsettling for the students as their emissions are a lot higher than they would have expected. Afterwards, many students cut down their meat consumption to try and reduce their emissions.

The use of zebrafish in computational drug development

Drug development is a complex process that can take as much as 10-14 years and 1-2 billion dollars. Almost two thirds of the projected budgets to bring a drug to the market is required for clinical trials; studies with healthy volunteers and patients aiming to find the right dose for an efficacious and safe treatment. Since costs and attrition rates are highest in the latest clinical phases, selection of the most promising drug molecules to progress from preclinical studies to studies in humans, is crucial. This selection can be improved by optimally informing the decision with modelbased approaches that integrate all knowledge obtained in preclinical research and translate these findings to humans. Computational approaches in pharmacology

At the division Pharmacology within the Systems Pharmacology cluster of the LACDR the interactions between a drug and an organism are studied. The focus is on understanding and predicting the pharmacology of a drug by computational modelling its concentration over time in the body after administration, as well as the intended and adverse effects resulting from different concentrations. An example concerning the neurodegenerative disease ALS has been published here earlier (‘LACDR joins the fight against ALS’ by Dr. Åsa Johansson, Origin Magazine 10:3, p.14-15). Systems pharmacology takes these largely empirical models to the next

level by integrating information on the biological system, to obtain a more complete and mechanistic description thereof. This systems approach is complex, requiring large amounts of data from specifically designed experiments. It is however worth it; when understanding systems and the differences between systems (e.g. animals and humans), and the corresponding interactions of drugs with those systems, translation between systems becomes more reliable. The result is an improved prediction of drug effects from one species to the next.

The zebrafish as promising model organism

Traditionally, studies in cell cultures, rodents and other animal models,

healthy volunteers and patients are performed before a drug reaches the market. For translational pharmacology, a new model organism is of special interest: the zebrafish. The zebrafish, an Asian freshwater fish, is a small, fast developing and fertile vertebrate organism, that is increasingly used in biomedical research. It combines the best of two worlds: as vertebrate organism with 70% genetic overlap with humans, it has an increased translational potential compared to cell cultures, while their size and fast reproduction and development still allows large scale studies on short time scales. This is especially important given that computational modelling is an iterative process of learning and confirming, where new findings require additional experiments. Using traditional vertebrate models, this process can take months or even years, while similar data can be gathered in days or weeks from zebrafish. The use of zebrafish in pharmaceutical research within both academia and industry is increasing as well. An experiment is easily planned and executed, by dissolving a drug in the fish’s aquarium. The downside is that the internal exposure of the fish to the drug, and the processes of uptake and clearance that are responsible for it, are unknown. This black box clouds the interpretation of the experiment, as the internal drug concentration drives the observed effects. The aim of our collaboration between the LACDR and the IBL is to develop a method to quantify this internal exposure, and explore the

Three requirements had to be met to reach our aims. Firstly, the experiments are performed on zebrafish larvae of maximum 5 days old, which are only millimetres in size. Very sensitive methods were necessary to quantify the drug amount inside these small organism. The LACDR division Analytical BioSciences, our partner in the Systems Pharmacology cluster, has much expertise on such measurements. Secondly, the concentration over time profile of the drug needed to be described by quantifying the processes of uptake and clearance. These processes are the result of interactions between the zebrafish and the drug, for example the passive diffusion of the drug through the skin, the active absorption through the mouth, but also the metabolism of the drug in the liver and the excretion by the kidneys. We used non linear mixed effects modelling techniques to quantify these processes, based on the observed drug amounts over time. Thirdly, the precise volume and weight of the larvae were required for translational

purposes. Bodyweight is often used as predictor of physiological processes. Together with the LIACS and the IBL, a 3D silhouette model of individual larvae was made based on Cell Observatory microscopy images from different angles. The volume and weight of the larvae were then computationally determined.

phase attrition, and among others innovative methods have to be developed to improve decision making in drug selection. The unique multidisciplinary research environment of the Faculty of Science here in Leiden provides ideal opportunities to develop these methods.

Meeting these three requirements, allowed us to perform a proof of principle experiment describing the pharmacology of paracetamol. This drug, of which much is already known, was chosen to compare the findings in the zebrafish with literature findings in other species. In the experiment, the uptake and clearance of paracetamol by zebrafish larvae over five hours was determined, and the obtained clearance was compared to reported values in higher vertebrates (figure 1). As can be seen, the zebrafish clearance does not deviate much from the correlation between paracetamol clearance and body weight in higher vertebrates. The underestimation can be explained when considering that larvae are still developing, and immature metabolism has been shown in children to result in lower clearance levels as well.

Voor dit vraagstuk zijn veertien verschillende frisdranken getest. Van de alom bekende dikmaker Coca Cola tot de caloriearme Spa Rood. Over ice tea bestaan geruchten dat het slechter voor je is dan cola, en van vruchtensappen is bekend dat ze vol met suikers zitten. Crystal Clear beweert 0 kcal te bevatten en ook op de verpakking van Taksi is te lezen dat het “minder calorieën bevat”. Tijd dus voor de test.

Resultaten De gevonden waardes zijn terug te vinden in de tabel. Per categorie zijn twee kolommen te vinden: de eerste met de betreffende categorie en de tweede met de naam “geschaald”. Het getal in deze tweede kolom geeft de relatie van de gevonden waarde weer ten opzichte van de waardes van de andere drankjes, op een schaal van nul tot tien. Een 10 betekent dat de gevonden waarde het beste is voor deze categorie (dus: de laagste prijs, de minste suiker of de minst lage pH) en een 0 geeft het slechtste weer (duur, veel suiker of erg zuur). Alle andere waardes zitten hier tussen in en geven aan op welke plek het drankje in de categorie staat.

Categorieën De veertien frisdranken hiernaast zijn gescoord in de volgende drie categorieën: hoeveelheid suiker, pH-waarde en de prijs. Van suiker is bekend dat het slecht voor je lichaam is: je wordt er dik van. Ook wordt suiker in je mond door bacteriën omgezet in zuur. Dit zuur tast het glazuur van je tanden aan, waardoor er meer kans is op gaatjes. Hier komt ook de pH-waarde om de hoek kijken: hoe

Wat valt op? • De grote winnaar (Spa Rood) en de grote verliezer (Coca Cola) zijn geen verrassing. Deze twee frisdranken dienden in deze test als controledrankjes om de rest mee te vergelijken. • Ice tea is niet slechter voor je dan cola. Het is niet goed voor je, zeker niet als je voor de sparkling variant van Lipton gaat. Wil je toch graag ice tea drinken, dan is Lipton Ice tea green of Pickwick Ice tea peach een gezondere keuze. • Crystal clear bevat geen suiker (net als Spa Rood) en is daarom een gezonde keuze. Het is wel zuurder dan Spa Rood, maar vergeleken met andere frisdranken valt de zuurgraad mee. • Bitter lemon, ook wel eens “frisdrank voor volwassenen” genoemd, is zo mogelijk nog slechter voor je dan cola. Bitter lemon is alleen in literflessen verkrijgbaar, dus deze prijs geeft de literprijs x 1,5 weer. • In appelsap zit bijna evenveel suiker als in cola. Ook is de pH-waarde vrij laag. Op de verpakking wordt aangeprezen dat er “alleen suikers in zitten die van nature al in fruit aanwezig zijn”. Dat is mooi, maar voor je lichaam maakt het niet uit. Het is nog steeds slecht voor je tanden en je wordt er nog steeds dik van. Natuurlijke suikers zijn echter wel duurzamer dan geraffineerde suikers, omdat er geen productieproces aan van pas komt. Dat is dan toch weer een pluspuntje voor de appelsap ten opzichte van de cola. Conclusies Wil je écht voor gezond gaan en ook nog eens op je portemonnee letten? Dan is Spa Rood je beste optie. Ech-

ter, we hebben in deze test in slechts drie categorieën gescoord. In sommige drankjes zitten extra vitamines, die een drankje minder nadelig kunnen maken. Het is natuurlijk ook geen ramp om af en toe iets ongezonds te drinken, zolang het maar met mate gebeurt. Geniet vooral van wat je lekker vindt, en laat op het volgende feestje de straaljagers (een mix van jenever met bitter lemon, mijn favoriete drankje) staan!

Flexstuderen: college wanneer het jou uitkomt Vaak komen collegetijden niet goed uit. Op de tijd die je eigenlijk in de collegebanken moet zitten zou je ook kunnen werken of is er een leuk evenement waar je graag naar toe wilt. Het idee is ontstaan om studenten meer flexibel te laten studeren, maar hoe bereik je dit? Onder meer door het digitaal aanbieden van colleges. Voor docenten biedt dat ook voordelen. Zo kunnen ze een groter aantal studenten bereiken, bijvoorbeeld in de vorm van MOOC’s: Massive Open Online Courses. In 2013 lanceerde onze universiteit zijn eerste MOOC en dit najaar biedt de universiteit er al 16 aan. Met behulp van digitale colleges kunnen studenten bepalen waar, wanneer en met welk tempo ze kunnen studeren. Dit maakt studeren een stuk flexibeler en beter te combineren met het verenigingsleven, sport of werk. Behalve investeren in digitale cursussen is er sinds dit studiejaar een nieuw initiatief voor flexibel studeren gestart. De Universiteit en Hogeschool van Amsterdam experimenteren met een nieuw financieringssysteem. Daarbij krijgt de student de mogelijkheid per ECTS (1 ECTS is 28 studie-uren) te betalen in plaats van in één keer collegegeld voor een heel jaar. De wereld redden met je dieet? Cybugs: sciencefiction of realiteit? In sciencefictionfilms heb je ze misschien weleens voorbij zien komen: insecten met een rugzakje om en een verrekijker in de hand die de kleinste kiertjes binnengaan om daar de vijand te bespioneren met een minicameraatje. Hoe bizar zou het zijn als deze cybugs (‘cyborg bugs’) binnenkort in het echt kunnen worden ingezet? Insect-spionnen zijn realistischer dan je denkt: onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Berkeley en de Universiteit van Singapore hebben het al gepresteerd om levende gehoornde kevers te besturen op afstand. Ze deden de beestjes een rugzakje om met onder andere een batterij, een ontvanger en elektrodes die verbonden waren aan de spieren die gebruikt worden bij het vliegen. Zo konden de onderzoekers bepalen welke richting de kever op vloog. Naast de ‘rugzak-methode’ kunnen er ook kleine chips in de larven van insecten worden geplaatst, die tijdens

ontwikkeling en metamorfose in het systeem dan al verweven zijn met spieren en zenuwen, waardoor het dier beter te besturen wordt. Enkele testen bij motten bleken al veelbelovend: ze overleefden de procedure en waren na afloop inderdaad bestuurbaar. De beestjes kunnen worden ingezet bij reddingsoperaties of kunnen een ruimte in worden gestuurd die te gevaarlijk is om als mens te betreden. Echter zijn er ook mensen huiverig over deze ontwikkelingen: zij uiten zorgen over hun privacy en wat er gebeurt als de insecten worden ingezet om mensen te bespioneren. Zo ver is het natuurlijk nog lang niet, maar aangezien er al miljoenen dollars in dit project zijn gepompt zullen verdere ontwikkelingen niet lang op zich laten wachten. Let volgende keer dus maar goed op als je een kever ziet lopen of een motje ziet vliegen in je kamer: wellicht wordt je in de gaten gehouden… Door Suzanne Vink

Veganisme: een levensstijl waarbij men geen dierlijke producten nuttigt en ook geen andere producten koopt of gebruikt waarbij sprake is van dierlijk leed. Je komt ze steeds vaker tegen, personen die vegan zijn gaan eten. Waar je tien jaar geleden bij het woord veganist dacht aan een persoon met geitenwollen sokken die alleen gras eet is het tegenwoordig een hip fenomeen geworden. Maar is deze Lifestyle nou wel echt zo goed voor de gezondheid en de natuur? In Nederland eet slechts 10% van de vrouwen en 6% van de mannen de aanbevolen hoeveelheid fruit, voor groenten liggen deze percentages nog lager. Ook onder kinderen wordt te weinig groente en fruit gegeten, 1% van de aanbevolen hoeveelheid groente en 5% van de aanbevolen hoeveelheid fruit. Binnen een veganistisch dieet wordt de nadruk voornamelijk gelegd op producten rechtstreeks uit de natuur, zoals verse groenten en vers fruit. De hype die veganisme met zich meebrengt zou dus misschien helemaal niet zo’n slecht idee zijn onder de Nederlandse bevolking. Echter bevat vlees veel essentiële voedingstoffen zoals eiwitten (voor de bouw van lichaamscellen), ijzer (nodig voor de aanmaak van hemoglobine in rode bloedcellen), Vitamine B (is essentieel voor de verbranding

van koolhydraten en een goede werking van het hart en zenuwstelsel) en vitamine B12, welke nodig is voor de aanmaak van rode bloedlichamen en een goede werking van het zenuwstelsel. Door veganistisch te eten zou een flink tekort in deze voedingsstoffen kunnen ontstaan waardoor het lichaam niet meer naar behoren kan functioneren. Op lichamelijk aspect is er dus nog een flinke discussie mogelijk over of veganisme wel of niet beter zou zijn voor de gezondheid. Er hangt nog een belangrijk aspect aan veganisme, namelijk duurzaamheid. De milieubelasting voor het produceren van dierlijke product ligt erg hoog, de broeikasgasuitstoot is 2 tot 60 keer zo groot dan voor het produceren van plantaardige producten. Voor land- en energiegebruik is dit 3 tot 10 keer zo groot en voor zoetwatergebruik 30 tot 40 keer zo hoog. Een voedselpatroon zonder vlees geeft dus wel degelijk een lagere milieubelasting. In de tijd waarin we nu leven is het zeer belangrijk om mee te denken aan milieu en klimaatverandering. Veganisme is zeker een levensstijl die bijdraagt aan het milieuprobleem maar of we door een stukje vlees te laten liggen echt zorgen voor een betere toekomst? Ik weet het niet. Door Wieneke Carree

Concentratieproblemen? Heb jij ook zo’n moeite om je smartphone te laten liggen terwijl je aan het studeren bent? Vooral wanneer je een berichtje binnenkrijgt is deze verleiding bijna niet te weerstaan. Echter kunnen de studieresultaten hieronder gaan lijden. Mijn persoonlijke favoriet om afleiding te bestrijden is de mobiele app en Chrome plugin ‘Forest’. Je stelt zelf een tijd in dat je geconcentreerd wilt werken en plant dan een boom, bijvoorbeeld een ‘lemon tree’. Zodra je de app verlaat op je telefoon, of een door jou gekozen website in je browser bekijkt, sterft je boom. De uitdaging is om het grootste bos te planten van al jouw studievrienden. Daarnaast ontvang je voor elke geplante boom ‘muntjes’. Daarmee kan je, na even doorsparen, ook het planten van een echte boom in een ontwikkelingsland sponsoren. Zo pluk je uiteindelijk figuurlijk, misschien ook letterlijk, de vruchten van jouw goede studiegedrag! Door Liselotte Rambonnet

Grondstofjutters

Leiden University Green Office

Noortje en Floor, twee alumni van de Universiteit Leiden, streven naar minder plastic afval in zee en een circulaire economie. Met ‘Grondstofjutters’ belonen ze strandgasten voor het verzamelen van gejut afval (foto Sean van der Steen).

Verpakkingsvrije winkel

De verpakkingsvrije winkel in Leiden kende een succesvolle start in het pop-up warenhuis en komt terug op een nieuwe locatie (foto uit archief Verpakkingsvrije winkel).

Meet-ups Gemeente Leiden

Duurzaam Leiden 2030 Sinds september heeft de Universiteit Leiden een ‘Green Office’, een platform voor duurzaamheid gericht op de ­studenten en staffleden van de Universiteit (foto Marc de Haan).

“Als het in Leiden sneeuwt dan zi e je in een straal van 15 meter om het Gorlaeus nog steeds gras” De Gemeente Leiden organiseert meet–ups om in gesprek te gaan met inwoners over de toekomst van Leiden. Maandag 12 december was er in Scheltema een meet-up over duurzaam Leiden in 2030 (foto Liselotte Rambonnet).

Repair Café

Bij het Repair Café helpen vrijwilligers bij het herstel van elektrische apparaten, kleding, fietsen, meubels of speelgoed. Zo verkleinen ze de afvalberg én bovendien is het leerzaam en leuk om te doen (foto uit archief Repair Café).

De Universiteit Leiden heeft nu een website ‘Duurzaam in beeld’ die het verbruik van alle univ ersiteitsgebouwen zichtbaar maakt, waaronder het nieuwe duurzamere Gorlaeus gebouw.

Green Keys

Green Keys is de studenten duurzaamheidscommissie van de Universiteit. Zij gaan vaak in gesprek met de Universiteit, o.a. over het grote aantal beeldschermen dat ’s nachts nog brandt in gebouwen en organiseren activiteiten zoals filmavonden en borrels (foto uit archief Green Keys).

De Gemeente Leiden voert verschillende campagnes voor Duurzaam Leiden 2030. Zo zijn vanaf april 2017 deze harde plastic glazen verplicht tijdens evenementen (foto Petra Polane).

KouweKleren

Hermien Buis, geschiedenisstudent uit Leiden, is bezig met het verduurzamen van haar levensstijl en verdiept zich daarnaast in ‘fair fashion’. Op haar blog KouweKleren schrijft ze over haar “vondsten, worstelingen en afwegingen” (foto Hermien Buis).

GIF GROEN

De kleur groen is hét symbool voor duurzaamheid. Groene stroom is goed voor het milieu, met groen sparen draag je bij aan een betere wereld en als je in de supermarkt een groen label op je doosje eieren ziet is dat vast een goed teken. Iets wat je echter niet groen kan noemen, is de kleur groen zelf. Zeer toxisch

De kleurstof groen is namelijk de moeilijkste en meest milieuonvriendelijke kleur om te produceren. Bij het maken van groene verf, plastic of inkt worden veel giftige stoffen gebruikt. Gevaarlijke, soms zelfs kankerverwekkende stoffen als chloor, kobalt, titanium, nikkel en zink komen hierbij aan te pas. Daarom is het recyclen van groene verpakkingen ook geen goed idee. De Universiteit van Osaka in Japan werkt aan non-toxische alternatieven, maar die zijn nog niet op de markt.

Doodsoorzaak Napoleon

Ook vroeger al was de giftigheid van de kleur groen een probleem: door de bijtende stoffen brandden schilders gaten in hun doeken als ze een mooi groen gazon probeerden na te schilderen. Het verhaal gaat

zelfs dat de kleur groen de doodsoorzaak is geweest van Napoleon Bonaparte. Tijdens zijn gevangenschap op St. Helena zou hij zijn bezweken aan arsenicum dat door het warme, vochtige klimaat verdampte uit het groene behangetje dat in de cellen op de muur zat.

Groenkoorts

Toch werd de kleur groen rond de jaren zeventig het favoriete symbool van milieuactivisten. Groen doet immers denken aan de mooie, pure natuur. Greenpeace werd opgericht en in allerlei landen kwamen ‘groene’ politieke partijen van de grond. Inmiddels is er van alles wat je kan bedenken wel een groene variant: groene batterijen, groene auto’s, groene treinen en zelfs groene scholen. Vandaag de dag trekken we dus nog steeds het verband tussen de kleur groen en een beter milieu. Het is fijn dat er veel milieubewuste producten zijn, maar besef je wel dat het maken van al die groene pakjes, zakjes en flesjes hartstikke giftig is. Misschien wordt het tijd om een andere kleur als symbool te kiezen voor een écht duurzame wereld.
