2024. gads – stabilitāte un jaunas

ambīcijas

2024. gadā fonds saņēmis ziedojumus attīstības projektiem un studentu stipendijām 2 175 553 eiro apmērā no 339 uzņēmumiem vai privātpersonām, turklāt mecenātu pulkam pievienojies 71 jauns ziedotājs. Pateicoties viņiem, 2024./2025. akadēmiskajā gadā fonda stipendijas saņēma 347 studenti, kuri pārstāv dažādas studiju programmas, un atbalstīti 63 pētniecības projekti. Paldies ikvienam ziedotājam!

2024. gadāizveidotas

četras jaunas stipendiju kopas, divas no tām – matemātikas un ķīmijas skolotājiem – tapušas pēc mecenāta SIA “Mikrotīkls” iniciatīvas. Savukārt stipendija “Southwestern Advantage” paredzēta ikvienam Latvijas augstskolu studentam. Tās mērķis jau studiju laikā iedrošināt un atbalstīt studentus sākt uzņēmējdarbību. Savukārt Purgaļu ģimenes stipendiju, ko iedibinājis ilggadējs LU fonda mecenāts Mārtiņš Andersons sava krusttēva un viņa ģimenes piemiņai, pirmo reizi saņēma kāds jurisprudences doktorants.

Pateicoties mecenātu atbalstam, LU fonds 2024. gadā, izmaksājot 1 296 330 eiro, atbalstījis 63 pētniecības projektus eksakto zinātņu un medicīnas jomā, septiņus –sociālajās un tiesību zinātnēs, sešus – kultūrā un piecus – humanitārajās un izglītības zinātnēs.

Veidojot Latvijas Universitāti par vienu no prestižākajām augstskolām ne tikai Baltijā, bet arī starptautiskā līmenī, LU fonds 2024. gadā uzsācis ilgtermiņa programmu “Latvijas pirmais Nobela prēmijas laureāts 2050”. Ar tās palīdzību liksim pamatus pasaules līmeņa inovācijām Latvijā. Projekta mērķis ir veicināt to, lai kāds no Latvijas zinātniekiem līdz 2050. gadam saņemtu pirmo Nobela prēmiju mūsu valstī. 2024. gada vasarā LU fonda pārstāvji kopā ar LU jaukto kori “Aura” un komponistu Raimondu Tigulu devās viesos pie mecenātiem ASV un Kanādā. Tikšanās klātienē devusi iespēju stiprināt saites un vēl plašāk pastāstīt par LU fonda darbību un īstenotajiem projektiem.

2024 – stability and new aspirations

In2024, the UL Foundation received donations of 2 175 553 euro from 339 companies or individuals for development projects and student scholarships, and 71 new donors joined the ranks of patrons. The generous support enabled 347 students representing various study programmes to receive foundation scholarships in the academic year 2024/2025, and 63 research projects were granted support. We are profoundly grateful to each supporter.

Four new scholarship groups were established in 2024, two of which – for mathematics and chemistry teachers – were created at the initiative of the patron –SIA “Mikrotīkls”, whereas “Southwestern Advantage” scholarship applications are open to every student of Latvian higher education institutions – the goal is to encourage and support entrepreneurship at an early stage, during the studies. The Purgaiļi Family Scholarship, established by the long-standing patron of the UL Foundation Mārtiņš Andersons in memory of his godfather and his family, was awarded for the first time to a doctoral student in law.

With munificent contribution of its patrons, in 2024, the UL Foundation, disbursing 1 296 330 euro, supported 63 research projects in the fields of exact sciences and medicine, seven in social sciences and law, six in culture, and five in the humanities and education sciences.

To ensure the position of the University of Latvia amongst the most prominent universities in the Baltics, as well as internationally, the UL Foundation launched a long-term programme “Latvia’s First Nobel Prize Winner by 2050”. Thus, we will lay the foundations for world-class innovations in Latvia. The goal of the initiative is to promote the efforts that would enable one of the Latvian scientists to receive the first Nobel Prize in our country by 2050.

In the summer of 2024, representatives of the UL Foundation, accompanied by the UL mixed choir “Aura” and composer Raimonds Tiguls, visited the patrons in the USA and Canada. The visit gave an opportunity to strengthen the ties and more profoundly discuss the UL Foundation’s work and the implemented projects.

Stipendiātu sasniegumi | Achievements of scholarship recipients

LU fonda stipendiāts pārstāv Latviju prestižā Nobela prēmijas laureātu pasākumā

2024. gadā no 30. jūnija līdz 5. jūlijam Lindavā, Vācijā norisinājās 73. Nobela prēmijas laureātu sanāksme, kas veltīta fizikai. Latviju šajā pasākumā pirmo reizi pārstāvēja LU Cietvielu fizikas institūta Spektroskopijas laboratorijas zinātniskais asistents, LU fonda “MikroTik” doktorantūras stipendijas eksakto un medicīnas zinātņu jomā stipendiāts Rihards Ruska.

Iespēju būt vienam no 650 dalībniekiem jaunais zinātnieks ieguva, piedaloties Latvijas Jauno zinātnieku apvienības konkursā.

Pasākuma laikā notika lekcijas, apspriedes dažādās diskusiju grupās, dalībniekiem bija iespēja tikties ar Nobela laureātiem šaurākā lokā – kopīgās pastaigās pa pilsētu vai pusdienās.

“Man izdevās uzspēlēt galda tenisu ar Nobela prēmijas laureātu Ēriku Betzigu, kuru 2014. gadā apbalvoja par ieguldījumu augstas izšķirtspējas fluorescences mikroskopa izveidē. Visi Nobela prēmijas laureātu sanāksmju dalībnieki tiek iekļauti tādā kā slēgtā grupā, kur var savstarpēji komunicēt. Tas var palīdzēt nākotnē sazināties vai uzrunāt kādu kolēģi kopīgai sadarbībai vai dalībai projektā,” iespaidos dalās Rihards.

Rihards piedalījās arī hakatonā, kas tiek dēvēts par Sciatonu (Sciathon). Komanda, kurā viņš darbojās kopā ar Francijas, Vācijas, Indijas, Ruandas un Omānas pārstāvjiem, iekļuva starp trim labākajām, gūstot iespēju prezentēt izstrādāto ideju ekspertiem un investoriem. Biznesa ideja bija saistīta ar problēmu – pesticīdus nanodaļiņās, ko izsmidzina uz laukiem, lietus ūdens ātri aizskalo. Komandas ideja – panākt, lai pesticīdi mazu bumbiņu formā piestiprinātos pie auga. Tad to iedarbība būtu ilgāka, savukārt pesticīdu patēriņš samazinātos. Kopā ar komandas biedriem darbs pie Sciatona idejas tiek turpināts.

LU fonda stipendija palīdzēja Rihardam atlases procesā, sedza daļu ceļa un dzīvošanas izdevumu.

UL Foundation’s scholarship recipient represents Latvia at prestigious Nobel laureate event

The 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Physics took place in Lindau, Germany, from 30 June to 5 July 2024. At this event, Latvia was represented for the first time by Rihards Ruska, a research assistant at the Laboratory of Spectroscopy at the UL Institute of Solid State Physics and a recipient of UL Foundation’s “MikroTik” doctoral scholarship in the field of exact and medical sciences.

The young scientist gained the opportunity to be one of the 650 participants by participating in the competition organised by the Latvian Association of Young Researchers.

The event offered various lectures, discussion groups, and participants had the opportunity to meet Nobel laureates in a smaller circle – during walks around the city or over lunch.

“I had a chance to play table tennis with Nobel Prize laureate Eric Betzig, who received the award in 2014 for his contribution to super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. All participants in Nobel laureate meetings are included in a kind of closed group where they can communicate. In the future, this can be of assistance in contacting or approaching a colleague for joint cooperation or participation in a project,” Rihards shares his impressions.

Rihards also participated in the hackathon-type event called Sciathon. The team, in which he collaborated with representatives from France, Germany, India, Rwanda and Oman, entered the top three, achieving the opportunity to present the idea to experts and investors. The business idea was related to pesticides in nanoparticles that are sprayed on fields, but rainwater promptly washes them away. The team’s idea is to devise pesticides that resemble small globules that attach themselves to the plant. Then their effect would be longer, while pesticide consumption would be reduced. Together with teammates, the work on the Sciathon idea continues.

The UL Foundation’s scholarship helped Rihards in the selection process and provided the necessary funds to meet part of his travel and living expenses.

Izcilības stipendija „Ceļamaize” sniedz iespēju atbalstīt talantīgus, mērķtiecīgus un centīgus LU pamatstudiju pirmā kursa studentus.

Nineļa Miriama Vainšeļbauma – LU Bioloģijas fakultātes absolvente, LU fonda eksakto, medicīnas un dzīvības zinātņu doktorantūras stipendijas saņēmēja – 2024. gada sākumā ieguvusi doktora diplomu par savu promocijas darbu “Ļaundabīgo audzēju ar poliploīdiju asociēto atavistisko un reproduktīvo evolucionāro adaptāciju izpēte”.

audzēji jeb vēzis stabili ierindojas nāves cēloņu vadošajā desmitniekā mūsdienu pasaulē un onkoloģisko slimību izplatība arvien pieaug. Vēža nāvējošais potenciāls saistīts ar tā šūnu spēju evolucionēt, strauji pielāgojoties apkārtējās vides apstākļiem un tādā veidā pretojoties ārstēšanai. Nineļas pētījums atklāj jaunas vēža evolūcijas nianses un var kalpot par pamatu turpmākiem pētījumiem, kas vērsti uz efektīvāku vēža ārstēšanas metožu izstrādi. Pētījuma centrālā tēma ir vēža evolūcijas virzītājspēks – poliploīdiju, proti, hromosomu komplektu jeb genoma kopiju skaita palielināšanās, kas piešķir šūnām lielāku izturību pret vēža attīstībai nelabvēlīgām mutācijām, ķīmijterapiju vai radioterapiju.

Promocijas darbs veltīts līdz šim brīdim salīdzinoši maz izpētītam fenomenam vēža attīstībā un evolūcijā – tajā apskatīta poliploīdo vēža šūnu epiģenētiskā reprogrammēšanās uz iepriekš nepieejamiem fenotipiem kā evolucionārā adaptācija pret terapiju. Rezultātā tika identificēta saikne starp poliploīdiju, atavistisko pāreju un reproduktīvo gēnu ekspresiju un asociāciju kooperatīvajos gēnu tīklos. Gametoģenētisko gēnu grupa tika izvirzīta par potenciālo mērķi nākotnes terapiju izstrādei, kas iedarbotos uz vēža šūnu augsti reorganizēto gēnu regulatoro tīklu. Šis atklājums palīdz labāk izprast vēža ārstēšanas grūtības un var kļūt par pamatu jaunu terapiju izstrādei.

UL Foundation’s scholarship recipient Nineļa Miriama Vainšeļbauma receives doctoral degree for research on malignant tumors

Nineļa Miriama Vainšeļbauma (Ninel Miriam Vainselbaum) – a graduate of the UL Faculty of Biology, recipient of the UL Foundation’s doctoral scholarship in exact, medical and life sciences – received her doctoral diploma in early 2024 for her doctoral thesis “Polyploidy-related atavistic and reproductive evolutionary adaptations in malignant tumors”.

Malignant tumors, or cancer, are consistently among the top ten leading causes of death in the modern world, and the prevalence of oncological diseases on the rise. The deadly potential of cancer is associated with the ability of its cells to evolve, rapidly adapting to environmental conditions and thus resisting treatment.

The research implemented by Nineļa reveals new nuances of cancer evolution and may serve as the basis for further studies aimed at developing more effective cancer treatment methods. The central theme of the study is the driving force of cancer evolution – polyploidy, i.e. an increase in the number of chromosomes sets or genome copies, which endows cancerous cells with a greater resistance to mutations that are unfavourable for cancer development, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Her doctoral thesis is devoted to a relatively little-studied phenomenon in cancer development and evolution – it examines the epigenetic reprogramming of polyploid cancer cells to previously inaccessible phenotypes as an evolutionary adaptation to therapy. As a result, a link was identified between polyploidy, atavistic transition and reproductive gene expression and association in cooperative gene networks. The group of gametogenic genes was proposed as a potential target for the development of future therapies that would affect the highly reorganized gene regulatory network of cancer cells.

This discovery contributes to improved understanding of the difficulties in cancer treatment and may become the basis for the development of new therapies.

UL Foundation’s scholarship recipient Glorija Nikolajeva becomes a National Guard

Glorija Nikolajeva is a 1st-year student at the UL Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences and a recipient of the UL Foundation’s M. M. V. Petkevičs Memorial Scholarship for academic year 2024/2025. She believes that receiving the scholarship is a proof that it is worth trying to achieve goals and fulfil dreams, without solely focussing on the result. The decision to join the National Guard is one of the goals that has helped her to make the dream of helping people a reality.

I always knew that my journey of life would be connected to medicine. After graduating from secondary school, I began to think about the future and my role in society. The National Guard seemed like a great opportunity to gain practical skills and a deeper understanding of the medical field, which could help me become a military medic in the future,

— says Gloria.

Participation in the National Guard training has given Gloria basic military skills, and moreover – valuable knowledge and proficiency necessary to protect herself, her loved ones, and the country in a crisis situation. Skills on the battlefield, the basics of shooting, as well as insight into topography and medicine give her confidence both as a future medical specialist and a responsible patriot of her country.

Gloria’s future plans regarding the National Guard include completing basic training, and, furthermore, a possible specialization in medicine. The scholarship holder is confident that this experience will advance her personal growth, develop discipline, strengthen her character, and broaden the horizons.

Mecenātu dzīvesstāsti pierāda, ka panākumu noslēpums ir drosme, neatlaidība un arī zināms optimisms –spēja atzīt savas kļūdas un mācīties no tām. Neveiksmju pieņemšana līdz ar spēju iet savu ceļu par spīti liktenim – tā ir liela daļa mācību procesa. Kā katrs zinātnisks atklājums vai mākslas darbs, kas dzimis pēc tūkstoš un vienas nepierādītas teorēmas vai nodeldētas otas, tā arī daudzu mecenātu ceļš uz veiksmi nebija rozēm kaisīts vien.

Sevis nosodīšana par to, ko vēl neesi sasniedzis, nekādu pienesumu nedod – atslēgvārds “vēl” nozīmē, ka šis mērķis ir izpildāms, tikai jāuzloka piedurknes un jāstrādā tālāk. Cilvēks nepiedzimst par ģēniju, bet kļūst par tādu dzīves gaitā – ar optimismu acīs un zinātkāri, atkal un atkal ceļoties kājās jaunam mēģinājumam. Vēlos ar savu rīcību iedrošināt kaut vai vienu cilvēku – ticu, ka viņš vai viņa atmodināto drosmi “pados tālāk”. Šāda pozitīvā ķēdes reakcija ir cilvēces progresa noslēpums.

Today, when smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, the flow of information is on constant rise. Probably everyone has come across so-called success stories – about a person’s path to fame, accompanied by sunny photos and long lists of achievements. Success stories can cause anxiety and fear of mistakes, making one compare oneself to others. To counter excessive perfectionism, one must look deeper into the life stories of illustrious personalities – their experience can provide valuable advice. Clearly, the patrons of the University of Latvia are such remarkable personalities, whose successes, but especially – the failures they have overcome confirm the saying that the path to the stars passes through thorns.

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again”, – the quote by Nelson Mandela imparts a panacea against excessive perfectionism, because listing successes without the “history” behind them does not reveal either the true price of triumph or the lesson behind it. The life stories of patrons prove that the secret of success is courage, perseverance and also a certain dose of optimism – the ability to admit one’s mistakes and learn from them. Accepting failures, along with the ability to follow one’s own path despite impediments dealt by fate, form a big part of the learning process. Like every scientific discovery or work of art that was

born from a thousand and one unproven theorems or worn-out paintbrushes, the path to success braved by many patrons was not strewn with roses.

The childhood of Vaira Inta Pelēķis-Christopher, Bronze Patroness of the University of Latvia, unfolded in times of change – leaving the homeland as refugees due to World War II, her family only settled permanently in the United States in 1950. However, neither the changing living conditions nor foreign language environment could impede Vaira’s optimism and desire for knowledge. Along with her thirst for knowledge, Vaira also demonstrates versatility and courage – after graduating from the French philology programme, she changed her scientific discipline entirely and moved to Switzerland to study medicine. Even in retirement, Vaira continues to strive for knowledge and popularize education – for many years she has led the Latvian readers’ group she founded in Seattle, organizing events and promoting the preservation and promotion of Latvian culture abroad. Vaira’s love for her homeland, where she was destined to spend only a short time, inspires admiration and profound respect.

When I pass the National Library of Latvia or Bergs Bazaar, I will think of Vaira, whose example taught me a lesson: sometimes youthful maximalism must be moderated. Castigating oneself for what one has not yet achieved does not contribute anything –the key word “yet” means that this goal is achievable, one just has to roll up the sleeves and work at it. A person is not born a genius, but may become one over the course of life – with optimism in their eyes and curiosity, getting up again and again for a new attempt. I want to encourage at least one person with my actions – I believe that he or she will then “pass on” their awakened courage. Such a positive chain reaction is the secret of human progress.

“Teacher of the Year of Latvia” awards presented, honouring teachers of our country

The most distinguished Latvian educators were honoured at the beautiful and emotionally sincere ceremony “Teacher of the Year of Latvia 2024” in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia (UL) on 20 November 2024. Awards were presented in 11 individual and two team nominations.

All laureates received a special glass award “Wings of Knowledge” created by artist Anda Munkevica and scholarships of excellence provided by the patrons of the UL Foundation SIA “Mikrotīkls”, “INDEXO banka” and SIA “AJ Power”. The winners of the individual nominations were awarded the scholarships in the amount of 1000 euro each, while the teams received a monetary prize of 2000 euro each.

The aim of the award established by UL is to honour talented and outstanding Latvian educators, affirming the crucial importance of the work of teachers in advancement of Latvian society and the state.

The award is organized by the University of Latvia and the UL Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science, the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments, as well as other state institutions and local government institutions, professional associations of educators, non-governmental organizations, industry experts, entrepreneurs, patrons, organizers of other educational awards. Particular gratitude – to the patrons SIA “Mikrotīkls”, AS “INDEXO banka” and SIA “AJ Power” for their support.

We truly hope that this new and unified award will not only serve as a public expression of gratitude to talented teachers, but also inspire young people to choose the teaching profession, strengthen your professional confidence as a community of educators, and foster greater collaboration among you. Iesaistīties LU fonda darbā mani pamudināja divi iemesli. Viens ir sentimentāli emocionāls – Latvijas Universitāte ir alma mater visai manai ģimenei: gan man, gan vīram, gan abiem mūsu bērniem. Mēs pārstāvam plašu zinātņu spektru, sākot no humanitārajām zinātnēm un beidzot ar dabas zinātnēm. Otrs iemesls ir vēlme redzēt Latviju kā zemi, kur attīstās tehnoloģijas, tautsaimniecība, un iedzīvotāji kļūst aizvien turīgāki. Kā ekonomiste esmu pārliecināta, ka ieguldījumi izglītībā ir galvenais priekšnoteikums valsts attīstībai,

Čikāgas apmeklējuma laikā LU fonda pārstāvji tikās arī ar ilggadējo mecenātu Kristapu Zariņu, kurš ziedojis ievērojamas summas vēstures pētniecībai, kā arī ar LU fonda ilggadējiem atbalstītājiem: Kristīnu Laimiņu, kura kopā ar vīru Laimoni Laimiņu ziedo līdzekļus stipendijām izciliem studentiem mikrobioloģijas nozarē. Fonda pārstāvji satikās arī ar Modri un Valiju Galeniekiem – Galenieku ģimene atbalsta centīgus studentus un izcilus LU pētniekus jau kopš 2017. gada. Pateicoties Latvijas Goda konsula Roberta Blumberga atbalstam, notika vairākas tikšanās ar mecenātiem, tostarp ar Latvijas Goda konsulu Mičiganas štatā Kārli Šteinmani. Viņš fondam ziedoja 10 000 ASV dolāru ar mērķi atbalstīt LU studentu biznesa idejas, kā arī LU Basketbola klubu. Pateicībā par ziedojumu K. Šteinmanis atzīts par LU fonda jūnija mēneša mecenātu. LU fonda valdes priekšsēdētāja Baiba Ebuliņa: “LU fonda Ziemeļamerikas tūre šogad bijusi ļoti sekmīga. Šis brauciens ļāva mums vēl plašāk pastāstīt visiem interesentiem par LU fonda darbību un īstenotajiem projektiem. Esam nostiprinājuši un paplašinājuši sadarbību ar mecenātiem ASV un Kanādā!”

UL Foundation strengthens ties with patrons in North America

Representatives of the UL Foundation visited the USA and Canada in the summer.

The support of donors enabled the UL mixed choir “Aura” and the prominent Latvian composer Raimonds Tiguls to join this meeting with compatriots. During the visit, a substantial cooperation agreement was signed with the Latvia Relief and Development Fund on the representation of the UL Foundation in Canada. Ina Ozoliņa, the spouse of Latvian Ambassador to Canada Mr. Kaspars Ozoliņš, pledged to contribute to the promotion of the UL Foundation.

I was encouraged to become involved in the work of the UL Foundation for two reasons. One is sentimental and emotional – the University of Latvia is the alma mater for my entire family: myself, my husband and both of our children. We represent a wide range of sciences, from the humanities to the natural sciences. The second reason is the desire to see Latvia as a country with fast-developing technologies and economy, where the population becomes increasingly wealthy.

As an economist, I am convinced that investments in education are the main prerequisite for the development of the country

— says Ms. Ozoliņa.

During the visit, representatives of the UL Foundation participated in the Midsummer celebrations in Latvian tradition in Tērvete, Canada, and also visited Toronto, where the choir “Aura” was amongst the participants in the XVI Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Canada.

During their visit to Chicago, representatives of the UL Foundation also met with long-time patron Kristaps Zariņš, who has donated significant amounts to historical research, as well as with long-standing supporters of the UL Foundation: Kristīna Laimiņš, who, together with her husband Laimonis Laimiņš, donates funds for scholarships for outstanding students in the field of microbiology. Representatives of the Foundation also met with Modris and Valija Galenieki – the Galenieki family has been supporting dedicated students and outstanding researchers at the UL since 2017. The support of the Honorary Consul of Latvia Roberts Blumbergs contributed to organisation of several meetings with patrons, including the Honorary Consul of Latvia in Michigan Kārlis Šteinmanis. He donated 10 000 US dollars to the UL Foundation with the aim of supporting the business ideas of UL students, as well as the UL Basketball Club. Expressing gratitude for the donation, K. Šteinmanis was recognized as the June patron of the UL Foundation.

Pabeigta Latvijas lielākā zvaigžņu globusa restaurācija

Viens no lielākajiem LU Muzeja krājuma artefaktiem ir zvaigžņu globuss, kas izgatavots pagājušā gadsimta 20. gados. Tā diametrs ir 80 cm, korpuss izgatavots no koka un ievietots masīvā metāla ietverē uz metāla trijkāja. Uz tā virsmas attēlotas spožākās zvaigznes, kas savienotas ar līnijām, mitoloģiskas zvaigznāju figūras, Piena ceļš, koordinātu tīkls un svarīgākās debess sfēras līnijas.

Globuss kalpoja kā uzskates līdzeklis studentu apmācībai no 20. gs. 30. gadiem līdz pat 80. gadu beigām. Viens no pēdējiem pasniedzējiem, kurš to izmantoja lekcijās, bija Profesors Šteins.

Laika gaitā tas ievērojami cietis, tāpēc globusa restaurācija bija neatliekama. 2020. gadā LU fonds uzsāka atbalstu šī vērtīgā eksponāta atjaunošanai, izsludinot ziedojumu vākšanas kampaņu globusa restaurācijai. Darbi sākotnēji tika finansēti no saziedotajiem līdzekļiem.

Restaurācijas veikšanai tika pieaicināta polihromā koka restauratore Sarmīte Balode, kas novērtēja bojājumus un izstrādāja darbības plānu – tajā iekļauta globusa konservācija pirms transportēšanas, transportēšanas iekārtas izveide, transportēšana uz restaurācijas vietu, globusa izpēte pirms restaurācijas, un, visbeidzot, pats restaurācijas darbs, kas izrādījās daudz sarežģītāks nekā sākotnēji paredzēts.

“Cik zināms, citos Latvijas muzejos tik liela izmēra zvaigžņu globusu nav, tāpēc šis eksemplārs uzskatāms par īpaši vērtīgu muzejisko priekšmetu. Tāpēc jo īpaši svarīgi bija saglabāt oriģinālo krāsojumu un detaļas. Restauratora darbam jābūt neredzamam, nemanāmam. Ir labi, ja redzam oriģinālu un skaidri saprotam, ka tas ir oriģināls, nevis uzskaistināts priekšmets ar restauratora improvizāciju,” stāsta restauratore Sarmīte Balode.

Latvijas Universitātes Muzejs aicina ikvienu interesentu apmeklēt ekspozīciju. Īpaši gaidīts ikviens, kurš ziedojis līdzekļus globusa atjaunošanai, padarot šo unikālo, vēsturisko eksponātu sabiedrībai pieejamu.

Restoration of Latvia’s largest celestial globe completed

One of the largest artifacts in the Museum of the UL collection is a star globe made in the 1920s. Its diameter is 80 cm, the body is made of wood and placed in a massive metal holder on a metal tripod. Its surface depicts the brightest stars connected by lines, mythological constellation figures, the Milky Way, a coordinate grid and the lines of the celestial sphere.

The globe served as an aid for student training from the 1930s until the late 1980s. One of the last lecturers to use it in lectures was Professor Šteins.

Over time, it had suffered significant deterioration, hence, the globe’s restoration could not be postponed. In 2020, the UL Foundation embarked upon supporting the restoration of this valuable exhibit by launching a fundraising campaign. The work was initially financed by donations.

Polychrome wood restoration specialist Sarmīte Balode was invited to carry out the restoration. She assessed the damage and developed an action plan – it included the conservation of the globe before transportation, the creation of a transportation device, transportation to the restoration site, the examination of the globe before restoration, and, finally, the restoration work itself, which turned out to be much more complex than initially planned.

“As far as we know, there are no celestial globes of such a large size in any other museums of Latvia, therefore, this specimen is considered a particularly valuable museum item. Therefore, it was especially important to preserve the original colouring and details. The restorer’s work should be invisible, imperceptible. It is good when we see the original and clearly understand that it is the original, and not an embellished object with the restorer’s improvisation,” says restorer Sarmīte Balode.

The Museum of the University of Latvia invites everyone to visit the exhibit. All those who have made donations for the restoration of the globe, making this unique, historical exhibit available to the public once more, are especially welcome.

2024. gadā jaunai rododendru šķirnei dots Latvijas Universitātes mecenāta Roberta Rūša vārds – ‘Lettonia’s Roberts Rūsis’. Tas ir jau piektais veltījums LU fonda mecenātiem. LU Rododendru selekcijas un izmēģinājumu audzētavā “Babīte” ik gadu maijā priecē rododendru ‘Teterevi Latvijai’, ‘Dagnija’, ‘Vilhelmīne Petkevičs’ un ‘Kristaps Morbergs’ ziedi.

Dagnija Rūses kundze: “Lai arī šāds notikums noteikti ir necerēts, ziņa mani patiesi iepriecina. Ir ļoti jauki, ja kaut kas tāds noticis, jo gan es, gan Roberts Rūsis esam bijuši saistīti ar dārziem. Visa mūža garumā un visā pasaulē, kur ir būts, esam daudz bijuši un strādājuši dārzos. Mīlestība pret dabu man nāk no vecāsmātes, kura man jau četru gadu vecumā mācīja par dārziem un augiem.”

Jaunais rododendrs ‘Lettonia’s Roberts Rūsis’ izceļas ar tumši zaļām, spīdīgām lapām un tumši purpursarkaniem ziediem, kuru vainaglapas rotā dzeltenzaļš lāsojums. Savukārt Dagnijas Rūses vārdā nosauktā rododendra ‘Dagnija’ ziedi ir purpursarkani, krokotām vainaglapu apmalēm un tumšu lāsojumu. Augs nosaukumu ieguvis 2021. gadā.

Pateicoties mecenāta Roberta Rūša un viņa dzīvesbiedres Dagnijas ziedojumam 50 000 ASV dolāru apmērā, ik gadu stipendijas saņem topošās medicīnas māsas. Abu šķirņu selekcionāre, LU Rododendru selekcijas un izmēģinājumu audzētavas “Babīte” pētniece Gunita Riekstiņa stāsta, ka jaunas šķirnes izveide prasa laiku un pacietību – šķirne top apmēram 15 gadu ilgā procesā. Pēc divu rododendru sakrustošanas ziedēšanas laikā, rudenī iegūtās sēklas tiek iesētas nākamā gada pavasarī. Lai sējeņi izaugtu līdz ziedēšanai, var paiet pat astoņi gadi. Un vēl tikpat daudz – līdz auga gala vērtējumam, kad tas tiek noformēts par šķirni un tam dots vārds.

Vairāku šķirņu nosaukumi doti pēc LU fonda ierosinājuma, iemūžinot mecenātu un izcilu personību vārdus. Pirmā šķirne, godinot LU mecenāti Minnu Matildi Vilhelmīni Petkevičs 150 gadu jubilejā, tika reģistrēta 2012. gadā. Tā ir viena no skaistākajām profesora Riharda Kondratoviča izveidotajām šķirnēm ‘Vilhelmīne Petkevičs’ ar maigi rožainiem ziediem. Atzīmējot visu laiku dāsnākā LU mecenāta Kristapa Morberga 170. dzimšanas dienu, 2014. gadā reģistrēta šķirne ‘Kristaps Morbergs’. Savukārt pateicībā mecenātiem Inārai un Borisam Tetereviem par dāsnu zinātnes, kultūras, mākslas, kā arī LU Botāniskā dārza atbalstu, rododendru šķirne ieguva nosaukumu ‘Teterevi Latvijai’.

Fifth rhododendron named after a patron of UL Foundation

In 2024, a new rhododendron variety was named after the University of Latvia (UL) patron Roberts Rūsis – ‘Lettonia’s Roberts Rūsis’. This is the fifth dedication to the patrons of the UL Foundation. Every year in May, the Rhododendron Breeding and Testing Nursery “Babīte” celebrates the generosity of patrons with the blossoms of the rhododendrons ‘Teterevi Latvijai’, ‘Dagnija’, ‘Vilhelmīne Petkevičs’ and ‘Kristaps Morbergs’.

Ms. Dagnija Rūse said: “Although such an event is certainly unexpected, the news truly delights me. It is very nice when something like this happens, because both Roberts Rūsis and I have been associated with gardens. Throughout our lives and all over the world, wherever we have been, we have worked in gardens a lot. My love for nature comes from my grandmother, who taught me about gardens and plants since I was four years old.”

The new rhododendron ‘Lettonia’s Roberts Rūsis’ stands out with dark green, shiny leaves and dark purple flowers, the petals of which are adorned with yellow-green streaks, whereas the rhododendron ‘Dagnija’, named after Dagnija Rūse, has purple flowers, with crinkled petal edges and dark streaks. The plant received its name in 2021.

A donation of 50 000 US dollars by patron Roberts Rūsis and his wife Dagnija every year enables the future nurses to receive scholarships.

Gunita Riekstiņa, a breeder of both varieties and a researcher at the University of Latvia Rhododendron Breeding and Testing Nursery “Babīte” explains that creating a new variety takes time and patience – the process takes about 15 years. After crossing two rhododendrons during flowering, in the autumn the seeds are obtained, and then sown in the following spring. It can take up to eight years for the seedlings to grow to flowering. And just as many more – until the plant is finally evaluated, registered as a variety and given a name.

Several varieties were named at the suggestion of the UL Foundation, perpetuating the names of patrons and outstanding personalities. The first variety, in honour of the UL patroness Minna Matilda Vilhelmīne Petkevičs on her 150th anniversary, was registered in 2012. It is one of the most beautiful varieties created by Professor Rihards Kondratovičs – ‘Vilhelmīne Petkevičs’ with delicate pink flowers. In celebration of the 170th birthday of the most generous UL patron Kristaps Morbergs of all time, the variety ‘Kristaps Morbergs’ was registered in 2014. To express gratitude to the patrons Ināra and Boriss Teterev for their generous support of science, culture, art, as well as the UL Botanical Garden, a rhododendron variety was named ‘Teterevi Latvijai’.

Janvāris: ziedojums Jura Kalnavārna piemiņas stipendijai

2023. gadā tika izveidota jauna stipendija – “Jura Kalnavārna piemiņas stipendija”, kas paredzēta LU fizikas un datorikas fakultāšu maģistrantūras studentiem par pētījumiem lietišķajā matemātikā. Anonīms ziedotājs janvārī stipendijas atbalstam ziedojis 2500 eiro.

Šī stipendija lietišķajā matemātikā domāta, lai veicinātu un atbalstītu Latvijas studentus, kuriem ir interese un dotības veikt teorētiskus pētījumus, kas ved pie praktiskiem rezultātiem zinātniskajā sfērā. Teorētiķiem šāds atbalsts ir īpaši nozīmīgs, jo ne visi pētījumi būs sekmīgi vai īstenojami īsā laikā, tomēr tie nepieciešami, lai radītu pamatu praktiskiem risinājumam, piemēram, centieniem pielietot kodolreakciju, lai ražotu strāvu. Dr. Juris Kalnavārns dzimis Vācijā bēgļu nometnē 2. pasaules kara laikā, vēlāk kopā ar vecākiem ieceļojis Kanādā. Juris Kalnavārns 1966. gadā absolvēja Makgilas universitātes inženiermehānikas programmu ar bakalaura grādu un turpināja studijas Prinstonas universitātē, iegūstot maģistra grādu 1968. gadā, bet doktora grādu – 1974. gadā. Viņa izstrādātais promocijas darbs veltīts gāzu dinamikas un plazmas fizikas pētījumiem. Ilgus gadus strādājis Kanādas Tokamak de Varennes kodolsintēzes laboratorijā, veicot matemātiskas analīzes plazmas kontroles sistēmu jomā. Dr. Kalnavārns publicējis vairāk nekā 20 akadēmiskus darbus.

January: Donation for Juris Kalnavārns Memorial Scholarship

In2023, a new scholarship was established– Juris Kalnavārns Memorial Scholarship, intended for master’s students of physics and computing at the University of Latvia, for research in applied mathematics. In January, an anonymous donor donated 2500 euro to support the scholarship.

This scholarship in applied mathematics is intended to encourage and support the students of Latvia who have the interest and ability to conduct theoretical research that leads to practical results in the scientific sphere. Such support is especially important for theorists, because not all research will be successful or can be implemented in a short time, but they are necessary to create a basis for practical solutions, for example, efforts to use nuclear reactions to produce electricity. Only recently, after more than 70 years, thanks to extensive investments and research in several countries, are we approaching this goal

— said the patron, who wished to remain anonymous.

The patron hopes that the scholarship will be among those that, similar to the work of Dr. Juris Kalnavārns, will promote research that leads to significant discoveries which contribute to the well-being of humanity.

Dr. Juris Kalnavārns was born in Germany during World War II, in a refugee camp, and later with his parents immigrated to Canada. Juris Kalnavārns graduated from McGill University, Mechanical Engineering program in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree and continued his studies at Princeton University, receiving a master’s degree in 1968, and a doctorate in 1974. His doctoral thesis was dedicated to research in gas dynamics and plasma physics. For many years, he worked at the Canadian Tokamak de Varennes laboratory, performing mathematical analyses in the field of plasma control systems. Dr. Kalnavārns is an author of more than 20 academic publications.

Februārī LU fonds no IT uzņēmuma “We Are Dots” saņēmis ziedojumu 2000 eiro apmērā ar mērķi atbalstīt LU Datorikas fakultātes (DF) 15. dzimšanas dienas svinību organizēšanu.

February: IT company “We are dots”

InFebruary, the UL Foundation received a donation of 2000 euro from the IT company “We Are Dots” with the aim of supporting the organization of the 15th birthday celebration of the University of Latvia Faculty of Computing. Rihards Kauliņš, a member of the UL FC student self-government, is grateful for the patron’s contribution: “The financial support of the company “We Are Dots” will enable both an appropriate celebration of the faculty’s birthday and awarding the best students within the framework of the event Computerist Days 2024.”

Marts: LU students Sandis Maskaļonoks ziedo Biznesa inkubatoram

LU Biznesa vadības un ekonomikas fakultātes students Sandis Maskaļonoks ziedojis 1050 eiro LU Biznesa inkubatoram (BI).

“Vēlējos ziedot, jo pirms studiju uzsākšanas piedalījos vienā no BI divu nedēļu programmām. Tā man palīdzēja iepazīt cilvēkus ar kuriem pavadīšu turpmākos studiju gadus. Ejot garām BI telpām, bieži vien apstājos, lai papētītu, kas tur notiek, kādi uzņēmumi tur tiek veidoti. Ikdienā redzu, ka aizvien biežāk mani draugi vienaudži mēģina uzsākt savu biznesu, tomēr nereti viņiem pietrūkst zināšanu kādā no jomām vai trūkst finansējuma. Uzskatu, ka BI ir tā vieta, kur var palīdzēt atrisināt minētās grūtības, tādēļ nolēmu ziedot, jo saprotu, cik tas nozīmīgi. March: UL student Sandis Maskaļonoks donates to Business Incubator

Sandis Maskaļonoks, a student of UL Faculty of Business Management and Economics, donated 1050 euro to UL Business Incubator (BI).

“I wanted to donate because, before starting my studies I participated in one of BI’s two-week programmes. It helped me get to know the people with whom I would spend the next years of my studies. When I walk past BI’s premises, I often stop to see what is going on, what companies are being created there. More and more often my friends and peers are trying to start their own business, but I see that they frequently lack knowledge in some area or are short of funding. I believe that BI is the place that can help to solve the aforementioned difficulties, so I decided to donate because I understand how important it is. By creating strong young people, we are creating a strong and prosperous Latvia,” says the patron.

Sandis is in his third year of studying e-business management, but before university he started working with e-commerce already in elementary school. Today, his hobby has turned into a company that has been operating since 2020.

Aprīlī LU fonds aizvadīja pirmās “Mecenātu brokastis”, kuras pulcēja gan fonda pašreizējos mecenātus, gan potenciālos nākotnes atbalstītājus. Pasākuma mērķis bija iepazīstināt ar paveikto un stāstīt par nākotnes plāniem un projektiem.

Pēc pasākuma divi mecenāti – Aigars Nords un Igors Skoks – izlēma atbalstīt vienu no vērienīgākajiem LU fonda projektiem “Latvijas pirmais Nobela prēmijas laureāts 2050”, katrs ziedojot 10 000 eiro. April: Aigars Nords and Igors Skoks support the project “Latvia’s First Nobel Prize Winner by 2050”

InApril, the UL Foundation held its first “Breakfast of Patrons”, convening the UL Foundation’s current patrons as well as prospective supporters. The aim of the event was to present the achievements, as well as talk about future plans and projects.

After the event, two patrons – Aigars Nords and Igors Skoks – decided to support one of the most ambitious projects of the UL Foundation “Latvia’s First Nobel Prize Winner by 2050”, each donating 10 000 euro. The aim of the project is to support the most talented UL students by 2050, providing Latvia with its first Nobel Prize laureate.

Aigars Nords says about his motivation to donate: “I consider supporting my alma mater a matter of honour, especially now that the University of Latvia has a number of ambitious and far-reaching projects that will take the university to its rightful place among the leading universities in the region,” while Igors Skoks expressed himself laconically: “I regularly support my secondary school, and now – also my alma mater!”

Maijs: Valdis Siksnis ziedo “Indexo”

akcijas 200 000 eiro apmērā

LU fonds saņēmis neparastu ziedojumu – “Indexo” akcijas 200 000 eiro apmērā. Ziedojumu veica “Indexo” līdzdibinātājs, valdes priekšsēdētājs un LU absolvents Valdis Siksnis.

Ziedojuma mērķis ir atbalstīt LU stratēģiskos un attīstības projektus, tostarp projektus “Latvijas pirmais Nobela prēmijas laureāts 2050”, “LU Akadēmiskais centrs: Veselības māja” un lekciju ciklu “Prezidenta lasījumi Latvijas Universitātē”.

Ar LU fondu noslēgtā vienošanās par ziedojumu paredz, ka “Indexo” akcijas netiks pārdotas līdz 2029. gada maijam, prognozējot, ka akciju vērtība piecu gadu laikā būtiski pieaugs, sasniedzot vismaz miljonu eiro un kļūstot par vienu no lielākajiem mecenātu ieguldījumiem LU mūsdienu vēsturē.

Tādējādi nākotnes finansējums no akciju pārdošanas būs nozīmīgs atspēriena punkts LU fonda vērienīgo projektu realizācijai.

May: Valdis Siksnis donates “Indexo” shares worth 200 000 euro

ULFoundation has received an unusual donation – the shares of financial enterprise “Indexo” in the amount of 200 000 euro. The donation was made by Valdis Siksnis, co-founder of “Indexo”, chair of the board and graduate of UL. The purpose of the donation is to support the strategic and development projects of UL, including “Latvia’s first Nobel Prize Winner by 2050”, “UL Academic Centre: House of Health” and “Presidential Readings at the University of Latvia”.

The donation agreement concluded with the UL Foundation stipulates that “Indexo” shares will not be sold until May 2029, predicting that the value of the shares will increase significantly within five years, reaching at least one million euro and becoming one of the largest patron investments in the modern history of UL.

Thus, the funds obtained from the future sale of shares will be an important starting point for the implementation of ambitious projects of the UL Foundation.

The patron graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Latvia in 1994.

Kārlis Šteinmanis dzimis Zviedrijā, vēlāk– 1956. gadā – ģimene nokļuva Amerikā, Indianapolē, kur mecenāts ieguva bakalaura grādu jurisprudencē. Līdztekus studijām Kārlis daudzviet ASV spēlējis basketbolu pirmajā divīzijā. Mecenāts 36 gadus darbojies jurisprudences jomā uzņēmumā “The Procter & Gamble”, pēdējos 12 gadus – kā uzņēmuma galvenais advokāts.

Viņa tēvs bija viens no tiem deviņiem cilvēkiem, kuri 1944. gadā organizēja iedzīvotāju glābšanu ar zvejnieku laivām no Kurzemes uz Gotlandi un palīdzēja izglābt aptuveni 4000 latviešus.

K. Šteinmanis aktīvi darbojas vairākās amerikāņu un latviešu organizācijās – viņš ir Garezera Latviešu centra labvēlis – “Mūža Namejs”, Amerikas Latviešu apvienības mūža biedrs un vadītājs Sinsinati Latviešu luterāņu baznīcā. Šteinmaņu ģimene ziedojusi līdzekļus Garezera vidusskolai, lai tā savā teritorijā varētu uzcelt divas ēkas. Kārlis arī bijis Latvijas Goda konsuls Ohaio štatā no 2001. gada un sadarbojies ar vairākiem Latvijas vēstniekiem ASV.

June: Kārlis Šteinmanis donates to support student business ideas and UL Basketball Club

I have actively supported various Latvian events and organizations in the US, but I feel that the time has come to donate to organizations in Latvia, as well. The UL Foundation appealed to me with its purposefulness and clearly formulated initiatives, so I decided to become involved and make my contribution

The patron has donated 10 000 US dollars to support student business ideas and the UL basketball team.

Kārlis Šteinmanis was born in Sweden, later – in 1956 – the family moved to America, Indianapolis, where the patron received a bachelor’s degree in law. In addition to his studies, Kārlis has played basketball in the first division in many places in the USA. The patron has worked in the field of law for 36 years at the company “The Procter & Gamble”, the last 12 years – as the company’s general counsel.

His father was one of the nine people who in 1944 organized the rescue of people by fishing boats from Kurzeme to Gotland and helped save approximately 4000 Latvians.

K. Šteinmanis is actively involved in several American and Latvian organizations – he is a benefactor of the Latvian Center Garezers – “Mūža Namejs”, a lifelong member of the American Latvian Association and a leader in the Cincinnati Latvian Lutheran Church. The Šteinmanis family has donated funds to the Garezers High School to enable construction of two buildings on its territory. “Sējiens” is a freshman camp where the newly enrolled students meet their prospective course mates, explore the faculty premises, and participate in fun and challenging activities – a pre-study adventure, which gives the future students the skills that will be handy in the future to overcome sleepless nights, difficult tests and tough sessions.

Augusts: Gunas Gregors testamentārais ziedojums

Mecenāte Guna Gregors, dz. Mežvēveris savā testamentā Latvijas Universitātei novēlējusi 65 000 ASV dolāru. 20 000 ASV dolāru paredzēti stipendiju fonda izveidei, lai atbalstītu LU studentus, kas studē lauksaimniecības, izglītības, medicīnas un tiesību zinātnes. Savukārt atlikušie 45 000 ASV dolāri paredzēti “Friends of the University of Latvia” projektiem.

Guna Gregors (1927–2022) dzimusi Rīgā, Latvijā, Voldemāra un Alises Mežvēveru ģimenē. Guna Amerikās Savienotajās Valstīs saņēma Vāgnera koledžas atbalstu izglītībai. Šo koledžu viņa absolvēja 1955. gadā. Pirms aiziešanas pensijā Guna bija mikrobioloģe Konektikutas štata Sabiedrības veselības departamentā.

Patroness Guna Gregors, née Mežvēveris has bequeathed 65 000 US dollars to the University of Latvia in her will. 20 000 US dollars are intended for the establishment of a scholarship fund to support UL students of agriculture, education, medicine and law. The remaining 45 000 US dollars are intended for “Friends of the University of Latvia” projects.

Guna Gregors (1927–2022) was born in Riga, Latvia, in the family of Voldemārs and Alise Mežvēveri. Guna came to the United States, and received a scholarship to Wagner College, graduating in 1955. Before retiring, Guna worked at a microbiologist with the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

The UL Foundation’s Platinum Patron to date has funded scholarships for seven future physics teachers, 34 doctoral students have received support for three years for the development of excellent doctoral theses in the fields of exact, life and medical sciences, 29 excellence scholarships have been received by future bioinformatics specialists specializing in bioinformatics and molecular biology. Likewise, support is provided to researchers, making a significant contribution to the development of Latvian science, both in fundamental and applied research. So far, 127 research projects have received the patron’s funding.

SIA “MikroTik” is a Latvian company founded in 1996. It manufactures and develops computer network management tools, including software and routers. The company’s equipment is distributed worldwide and used by Internet service providers, companies, as well as individual users.

Sākoties 2024./2025. akadēmiskajam gadam, LU fonds izsludināja vairākas jaunas stipendiju kopas, viena no tām ir “Southwestern Advantage” stipendija, uz kuru var pretendēt jebkuras Latvijas augstskolas bakalaura studiju 2. kursa students.

“Southwestern Advantage” stipendija 1000 eiro apmērā ir paredzēta, lai iedrošinātu un atbalstītu jaunatnes uzņēmējdarbību Latvijas universitāšu studentu vidū, aicinot jauniešus ikdienā vēl plašāk iesaistīties ārpusskolas aktivitātēs, studentu organizācijās un meklēt jaunas iespējas, kuras iespējams attīstīt studiju laikā.

October: Donation to establish a new “Southwestern Advantage” scholarship

Starting the academic year 2024/2025, UL Foundation announced several new scholarship groups, one of which was the “Southwestern Advantage” scholarship, which is open to the 2nd-year undergraduate students of any higher education institution of Latvia.

The “Southwestern Advantage” scholarship of 1000 euro is intended to encourage and support youth entrepreneurship among students at Latvian universities, inviting young people to become more extensively involved in extracurricular activities, student organizations, and to seek new opportunities that can be pursued during their studies.

“We want to continue awarding this youth entrepreneurship scholarship every year. We were very pleased to award Izolde Helma Gūtmane as the first scholarship recipient in Latvia. Izolde’s story embodies the values that we believe every entrepreneur should have: resilience, initiative, the ability to overcome obstacles, and a growth-oriented mindset. After the secondary school, Izolde courageously continued her studies in Denmark, where, despite challenges, she successfully continued to build her a career. In her free time, she led the Future Leaders programme in both Copenhagen and Sigulda, improving her financial literacy, marketing, and team-building skills. She currently works as a science teacher at Sigulda State Gymnasium, studying biology and mathematics at the University of Latvia, and continuously contributes to a sustainable leadership programme for young people and adults. Her international experience, determination to overcome difficulties, and passion for both learning and teaching make her an example of the entrepreneurial spirit,” says Madis Raud, Head of Strategic Partnerships in Europe.

The Southwestern Advantage Sales and Leadership Program has been offered to students in the Baltics for over 20 years. Many alumni aspired to collectively support the next generation of young leaders and entrepreneurs in the Baltics. As a result, the Southwestern Advantage Foundation was established in 2017, with the mission of helping young people gain knowledge and develop character to enable them to fulfil their dreams in life.

Trapezņikova ziedo stipendijai “Ceļamaize”

Viens no LU fonda vēsturē nozīmīgiem datumiem ir 2004. gada 29. novembris, kad LU Senāts lēma par LU fonda dibināšanu. Atzīmējot lēmuma divdesmito gadadienu, fonds aicināja LU absolventus un stipendiātus ziedot stipendijai “Ceļamaize”.

Viens no apjomīgākajiem ziedojumiem bija 500 eiro apmērā no Ijas Trapezņikovas.

“Pēc LU absolvēšanas turpināju studijas ārzemēs – iegūts maģistra grāds Ungārijā, Centrāleiropas Universitātē Budapeštā un doktora grāds ASV, Ziemeļrietumu universitātē Ilinoisā. Esmu veidojusi akadēmisku karjeru – jau 15 gadus strādāju Anglijā. 2024. gada vasarā man piešķirts profesora amats Londonas Universitātes Karaliskajā Holoveja koledžā Londonā. Tieši tagad man šķita, ka ir lielisks brīdis, lai atskatītos uz paveikto un palīdzētu citiem uzsākt izcilu karjeru,” profesionālajā pieredzē dalās I. Trapezņikova.

Stipendija “Ceļamaize” ir atbalsts tiem studentiem, kas uzsāk izglītības gaitas LU. Tā paredzēta jebkuras LU fakultātes studentam, kas mācās bakalaura studiju 1. kursā. Šī stipendija finansēta no īpaši tai veltītajiem ziedojumiem, tādēļ katru gadu stipendiātu skaits var būt atšķirīgs. LU fonda mērķis ir katru gadu atbalstīt pēc iespējas vairāk studentu.

“Ceļamaize”– “Bread for the Journey”

One of the important dates in the history of the UL Foundation is 29 November 2004, when the UL Senate passed the decision to establish the UL Foundation. Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the occasion, the UL Foundation invited graduates and the former scholarship recipients to donate to the scholarship “Ceļamaize”.

Amongst the largest donations was 500 euro from Ija Trapezņikova. She is a graduate of the University of Latvia and the winner of Kristaps Morbergs scholarship in the academic year 2001/2002 from the UL Foundation.

“After graduating from the University of Latvia, I continued my studies abroad – obtained a master’s degree in Hungary, at the Central European University in Budapest, and a doctorate in the USA, at Northwestern University in Illinois. I have pursued an academic career – for 15 years, in United Kingdom. In the summer of 2024, I was awarded a full professorship at Royal Holloway, University of London. It seemed a great moment to look back on the accomplishments and help others start an excellent career,” I. Trapezņikova shares her professional experience.

The scholarship “Ceļamaize” ensures a support for students who are starting their education at the University of Latvia. It is intended for students of any faculty of UL who are in their first year of bachelor’s studies. This scholarship is financed from donations specifically dedicated for this purpose; therefore, the number of scholarship recipients may vary from year to year. The goal of the UL Foundation is to support as many students each year as possible.

Decembris: “Gravity Team”

LU Eksakto zinātņu un tehnoloģiju fakultātes Datorikas nodaļas studentu dalībai Pasaules programmēšanas sacensībās ICPC decembrī saņemts ziedojums 5000 eiro apmērā.

Pasaules studentu programmēšanas sacensības (ICPC) organizē ICPC fonds (ICPC Foundation). Pasākumā pārstāvētas vairāk nekā 3000 universitātes no vairāk nekā 100 valstīm un dalībnieku skaits ik gadu pārsniedz 50 tūkstošus. Sacensību ceturtdaļfināli un pusfināli norisinās reģionos, savukārt fināla sacensības katru gadu notiek citā valstī un pulcē ap 110 pasaules spēcīgāko komandu.

December: “Gravity Team”

Adonation of 5000 euro was received in December for the participation of students of the UL Faculty of Science and Technology, the Department of Computer Science in the World Programming Competition ICPC. The patron is one of the leading algorithmic cryptocurrency trading companies – “Gravity Team”. The donation will cover the costs of participation in the camp and help the student team to take part in the future stages of the competition.

The company has been supporting the participation of UL students in the world’s oldest and most prestigious academic programming competition for the second year.

“In the “Gravity Team” collective, knowledge and skills are the strongest resource, we highly value these qualities both within the company and attracting new talent.

Achievements in STEM Olympiads and programming competitions are an advantageous record in the resumes of young specialists. Such experience is highly valued in leading technology companies,” says Lāsma Maksimoviča, a representative of the “Gravity Team”.

In 2024, the student team won the high 7th place and an entry to the next stage – the European finals in March 2025. To date, UL team has participated in the world final six times, winning bronze medals in the semifinals four times.

The World Student Programming Competition (ICPC) is organised by the ICPC Foundation. Upwards of 3000 universities from more than 100 countries are represented at the event, and the number of participants annually exceeds 50 thousand. The quarterfinals and semifinals of the competition are held in the regions, while the final competitions take place annually, each time – in a different country, and gather around 110 of the world’s strongest teams.

ArSIA “Mikrotīkls” un LU fonda atbalstu iegādātas sešas mērierīces sportistu –basketbolistu fizisko spēju mērīšanai. Tās palīdzēs sekot līdzi progresam un veicināt efektīvāku treniņprocesu. Šīs mērierīces dod iespēju individualizēt treniņu procesu un atrast katram piemērotāko pieeju treniņu procesa organizēšanai. Otrs, bet ne mazāk svarīgs pienesums ir rehabilitācijas procesu uzraudzība. Fizisko spēju mērīšana ļoti atvieglo kvalitatīva rehabilitācijas procesa organizēšanu.

“Reizi mēnesī veicam vispatverošus testus – tiek mērīts izometriskais spēks, ekscentriskais spēks, koncentriskais spēks, horizontāla un vertikāla jauda, kā arī cīpslu iestiepuma un saraušanās cikls un sprinta raksturojošie lielumi. Basketball team training according to scientifically proven methods

The use of the latest technologies in sports testing is the beginning of the path to developing the sports industry at UL and in Latvia as a whole. An analytical approach to athletes’ achievements and shortcomings gives a deeper understanding of the approach to training processes, as well as helps to build a professional and competitive team in professional sports. The importance of regular testing of basketball players and how does it affect the daily training process is explained by Artūrs Paiķis, the coach of the basketball team“University of Latvia”.

With the support of SIA “Mikrotīkls” and the UL Foundation, six specialised devices have been purchased to measure the physical abilities of athletes, in our case – basketball players. They will help to track progress and promote a more efficient training process. These measuring devices make it possible to individualize the training process and find the most suitable approach to organizing the training process for each individual. The second, but no less important contribution is the monitoring of rehabilitation processes. Measuring physical abilities greatly facilitates the organization of a high-quality, efficient rehabilitation process.

“Once a month, we perform comprehensive tests, measuring isometric strength, eccentric strength, concentric strength, horizontal and vertical power, as well as tendon tension-contraction cycle and sprint characteristic values. Individual tests can be performed even several times a week. The range of results, i.e., which result is good and which is bad, is based on previous studies conducted around the world. The summary of these results is recorded in a programme reflecting the dynamics of the work or “mishaps” performed. After each test result summary, we create an appropriate, and, wherever possible, individualized weight training programme.

With the help of this equipment, science has been linked to sports and vice versa –sports have been linked to science. As a university team, it would be a great omission not to base the training process on scientifically proven methods. This is also the reason why player testing on regular basis has been introduced”.

“The purchased devices have greatly contributed to the development of my master’s thesis, and a scientific article has been written, which will be presented at the sports science conference in Portugal at the end of November. I want to convey to our large UL community a very important consideration: we have the opportunity to develop science in many directions – in pedagogy, psychology, sports science and other areas.”

Šajos eksperimentos nepieciešami precīzi un reāllaikā iegūti gāzu, īpaši ūdeņraža un skābekļa, koncentrācijas mērījumi.

LU CFI Enerģijas materiālu laboratorijā “MikroTik” projektu konkursa dabas, tehnoloģiju un medicīnas zinātņu jomā ietvaros iegādāta ūdeņraža un skābekļa mikrosensoru sistēma Unisense X-5 UNIAMP, kas nodrošina precīzu gāzu analīzi reāllaikā. Jaunā iekārta dod iespēju noteikt iegūto gāzu koncentrāciju reakcijas vietā, vien dažus milimetrus no elektroda virsmas, ļaujot novērtēt sintezēto materiālu efektivitāti un uzlabot izpratni par procesiem reakcijas vietā.

Unikālajai mikrosensoru sistēmai ir plašas pielietojuma iespējas visur, kur nepieciešams noteikt temperatūru, šķidruma pH, kā arī ūdeņraža un skābekļa klātbūtni, piemēram, elektrohromo un fotohromo materiālu, bateriju, sensoru un bioloģisko objektu izpētē. Šī mērījumu sistēma paplašinās iespējas piedalīties sadarbības projektu izstrādē un radīs jaunas pētījumu iespējas.

University of Latvia conducts research in the field of alternative energy

Research is underway at the UL Institute of Solid State Physics (UL ISSP) to address alternative energy issues, including the production of hydrogen from water using sunlight. Photocatalytic water-splitting technique is one of the potential methods to obtain renewable hydrogen, providing an opportunity for the transition to sustainable energy production. In order to consider the implementation of the technology, well-studied and optimized processes are required that would ensure efficient and economically viable production.

Water-splitting technique requires development of suitable, efficient, and stable photocatalysts that, when applied to electrodes, can absorb sunlight and ensure the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen. These experiments are based on accurate and real-time measurements of the concentration of gases, especially hydrogen and oxygen.

The Energy Materials Laboratory of UL ISSP has purchased a hydrogen and oxygen microsensor system Unisense X-5 UNIAMP, which provides accurate gas analysis in real time, within the framework of the “MikroTik” project competition in the field of natural, technological and medical sciences. The new device makes it possible to determine the concentration of the resulting gases at the place where the reaction occurs, just a few millimetres from the electrode surface, allowing to assess the efficiency of the synthesized materials and improve understanding of the processes at the place of reaction.

The unique microsensor system has extensive possibilities for application wherever it is necessary to determine temperature, pH of a liquid, as well as the presence of hydrogen and oxygen, for example, in the study of electro- and photochromic materials, batteries, sensors and biological objects. This measurement system will expand the possibilities for participation in collaborative projects and create new research opportunities.

Pirmās “Mecenātu brokastis” pulcē fonda mecenātus un draugus

LU fonds aprīlī LU Zinātņu mājā rīkoja pirmās “Mecenātu brokastis”. Pasākumā pulcējās fonda mecenāti un potenciālie atbalstītāji. Fonda pārstāvji sniedza ieskatu paveiktajā un ieskicēja vērienīgākos nākotnes projektus, kam nepieciešams atbalsts un papildu finansējums.

Brokastu laikā viesiem bija iespēja klātienē iepazīties ar jauno Latvijas Universitātes rektoru Gundaru Bērziņu un uzklausīt viņa redzējumu par turpmāko LU attīstības vīziju un mērķiem.

Latvijas Universitātes absolvents, vīna un tautas sporta kultūras veidotājs Aigars Nords dalījās ar savu pieredzi par mecenātismu Latvijā, pasākuma beigās ziedojot 10000 eiro projektam “Latvijas pirmais Nobela prēmijas laureāts 2050”. Pēc pasākuma šim projektam savu ziedojumu 10 000 eiro apmērā veltīja arī Igors Skoks, uzsverot šī vērienīgā projekta potenciālu un nozīmību.

LU fonda valdes priekšsēdētāja Baiba Ebuliņa plašākai auditorijai izklāstīja pagājušajā gadā paveikto, savukārt Mārcis Auziņš, LU fonda valdes loceklis, sniedza plašāku ieskatu par fonda vērienīgākajiem nākotnes projektiem, ko iespējams atbalstīt:

• “Latvijas pirmais Nobela prēmijas laureāts 2050” – programma talantīgāko un perspektīvāko Latvijas Universitātes studentu atbalstam ar mērķi līdz 2050. gadam sagādāt Latvijai pirmo Nobela prēmijas laureātu;

• Lekciju cikls “Prezidenta lasījumi Latvijas Universitātē” – starptautiski atzītu izcilu speciālistu priekšlasījumi un diskusijas Latvijas Universitātes Lielajā aulā par globālām un reģionālām aktualitātēm zinātnē, inovācijās, politikā, drošībā un sabiedriskajos procesos;

• “Latvijas Universitātes Botāniskais dārzs” – Latvijas Universitātes Botāniskais dārzs ir nozīmīgs Latvijas un Rīgas pilsētas sabiedriskais objekts, kura labiekārtošanā un izveidē LU fondam ir nozīmīga loma;

• Latvijas Universitātes Akadēmiskais centrs “Veselības māja” – Latvijas Universitātes Akadēmiskā centra izveide ir viens no vērienīgākajiem akadēmiskajiem projektiem Baltijas vēsturē. Veselības māja iecerēta kā nozīmīga Akadēmiskā centra daļa. Tiek meklēti atbalstītāji augstvērtīgu pētījumu veikšanai, mācību centru izveidei, kā arī pasaules klases viesprofesoru piesaistei.

The first “Breakfast of Patrons”

convenes UL Foundation’s patrons and friends

The UL Foundation held its first “Breakfast of Patrons” at UL House of Science in April. The event brought together the foundation’s patrons and prospective supporters. The UL Foundation’s representatives provided an insight into the accomplishments to date and outlined the most ambitious future projects that require support and additional funding. During the breakfast, guests had the opportunity to meet the new Rector of the University of Latvia, Gundars Bērziņš, in person, hear his vision for future development and goals of UL.

Aigars Nords, a UL graduate and a creator of wine and public sports culture, shared his experience of patronage in Latvia, at the end of the event donating 10 000 euro to the project “Latvia’s First Nobel Prize Winner by 2050”. After the event, Igors Skoks also donated 10 000 euro to this project, emphasizing the potential and significance of this aspiring initiative.

Baiba Ebuliņa, Chair of the Board of UL Foundation, presented to a wider audience the achievements of the past year, while Mārcis Auziņš, Board Member of UL Foundation, provided a broader insight into the UL Foundation’s most resourceful future projects that can be supported by patrons:

• “Latvia’s First Nobel Prize Winner by 2050” – a programme to support the most talented and promising UL students with the aim of providing Latvia with its first Nobel Prize laureate by 2050;

• Lecture series “Presidential Readings at the University of Latvia” – lectures and discussions held at the UL Great Hall with participation of internationally recognized, distinguished specialists, dedicated to global and regional current events in science, innovation, politics, security and social processes;

• “University of Latvia Botanical Garden” – UL Botanical Garden is a prominent public facility of Latvia and the city of Riga, and the UL Foundation has an important role in its growth and improvement;

• “University of Latvia Academic Centre: House of Health” – development of the University of Latvia Academic Centre is one of the most ambitious academic projects in the history of the Baltics. The House of Health will constitute a major part of the Academic Centre. Supporters are being sought for conducting highquality research, establishing training centres, as well as attracting world-class visiting professors.

Pasākumā fonda valdes priekšsēdētāja Baiba Ebuliņa, valdes loceklis Mārcis Auziņš un LU rektors Gundars Bērziņš viesus informēja par LU fonda sasniegumiem un nākotnes mērķiem.

Viesus priecēja latviešu mākslinieka Artūra Virtmaņa performance “Pazudušā (dēla) atgriešanās”, kā arī LU kora “Aura” un komponista Raimonda Tigula kopīgi radītais muzikālais priekšnesums.

Pasākuma viesiem bija iespēja pirmajiem aplūkot dabas un mākslas satikšanos izstādē

“Satikt augu sevī. Etīde dabai un emocijām”, ko rīkoja LU sadarbībā ar Arterritory.com. Izstādē tika eksponēti septiņu mākslinieku – Reiņa Dzudzilo, Kristas Dzudzilo, Kristapa Kalns, Sarmītes Māliņas, dueta MAREUNROL’S, Artūra Virtmaņa – radītie laikmetīgās mākslas paraugi.

Reception of UL Foundation's patrons

“Harvest Festival”

Patrons and supporters of the UL Foundation met at the UL Botanical Garden on 25 September to look back on the achievements and celebrate the 105th anniversary of UL. At the event, the Chair of the UL Foundation’s Board Baiba Ebuliņa, Board Member Mārcis Auziņš, and the UL Rector Gundars Bērziņš informed the guests about the achievements and future goals of the UL Foundation.

Guests were delighted by the performance “The Return of the Lost (Son)” by Latvian artist Artūrs Virtmanis, as well as a musical performance jointly created by the UL choir “Aura” and composer Raimonds Tiguls.

The guests had the opportunity to be the first to see the convergence of nature and art at the exhibition “Find the Plant Within You. An Etude for Nature and Emotions”, which was organized by UL in collaboration with Arterritory.com. The exhibition featured contemporary art pieces created by seven artists – Reinis Dzudzilo, Krista Dzudzilo, Kristaps Kalns, Sarmīte Māliņa, the duo MAREUNROL’S, and Artūrs Virtmanis.

HOW CAN LATVIANS LIVING ABROAD DONATE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF LATVIA IN THEIR WILL?

The last will and testament made abroad is first approved in the country where the testator lives and is transferred to Latvia only after the testator has passed away. Therefore, for Latvians living abroad who wish to donate to the University of Latvia in their will, the form and content of the will depends on the regulations of their country of residence.

In accordance with section 5(1) of the Public Benefit Organisation Law, the University of Latvia Foundation has been granted the status of a public benefit organisation (501 (c) (3) charity).
