Thank You for Living United What an incredible community we live in. While the year brought continued challenges for everyone, it has been remarkable at United Way to witness and be part of the local work to help one another. Thank you to everyone who tirelessly helps our neighbors stay healthy, safe, educated, fed, and housed. For many, this is their work as healthcare, first responders, educators, nonprofits, social services, government, retailers and more who strive each day to serve others, and they are all heroes. But we also must thank each other, as there are many silent heroes. Whether checking on a neighbor, following safety protocols, or donating time, talent and dollars to help meet local needs, there are big and small ways we all make a difference. As the pandemic continued to unfold and affect how we live, work, learn and play, we all learned that zoom means more than moving fast and pivoting means being very flexible. Most importantly, truly working together means finding new ways to drive progress and empower hope. At United Way, we embraced this in our daily work, collaborations, and as we embarked on a new Strategic Plan. We appreciate you - our nonprofit and community partners, volunteers, donors, and local heroes who bring hope for a better tomorrow – reminding us how powerful it is when Together, We LIVE UNITED.
Bryan Newton, Ph.D., J.D. 2020-21 Chairman of the Board

2021-2024 STRATEGIC PLAN
United Way’s Board of Directors approved a new Strategic Plan in August 2021, following a multi-phase process facilitated by the Business, Economic, and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) of the Franklin P. Perdue School of Business at Salisbury University. We appreciate the team at BEACON and the many community stakeholders, board members, volunteers and staff who participated – entirely virtually – in this important work. The plan includes updated mission, vision, shared values and diversity, equity and inclusion statements to guide the work of UWLES. The driving strategies will allow UWLES to leverage our strengths while working on areas for improvement over the next several years. These strategies share equal importance, with many actions progressing concurrently. This is a fluid and adaptable framework to be reviewed regularly with stakeholders. Learn more and follow our progress at uwles.org/mission.

The importance of good health continues to impact our community more than ever. United Way’s focus on bridging the gap to better health has been a cornerstone of our mission since 1944. SingleCare The prescription assistance program formerly known as FamilyWize, is now SingleCare. The program, provided free to the community through a partnership with United Way, offers discounts on prescription medications with no registration or eligibility requirements. SingleCare includes the same great benefits and can be accessed through a savings card or free app available on Google Play or iTunes. In 2020, 3,147 Lower Shore residents saved over $245,000. Learn more and download a free card at uwles.org/SingleCare.
Wellness Made Easy UWLES’s collaborative health literacy initiative Wellness Made Easy has continued to engage with issues made more critical by the pandemic. A new website — MyWellnessMadeEasy.com — launched as a key information hub for community members to find information on local health-supporting resources. A health literacy curriculum continues to be available and partners such as MAC, Inc. relaunched its use when clients returned on site to help empower participants to be better advocates for their health.
Lower Shore Addiction Awareness Visual Arts Competition With the generous support provided by the Maryland Opioid Operational Command Center (OOCC) and the partnership of the four county Health Departments and school systems, UWLES was able to offer the art competition in-person in 2021. Seventy middle and high school students submitted works exploring the subject of addiction and recovery. The works were exhibited at our partnering arts organizations: Salisbury Art Space, Somerset County Arts Council, Art League of Ocean City, and Dorchester Center for the Arts. Learn more and view winning entries online at uwles.org/Art.

United Way’s partnerships with local nonprofits and all local school systems help expand opportunities for every student to reach their potential. Whether focusing on early reading, mentoring, physical & emotional supports, or college & career readiness, each program helps build the skills and confidence students of any age need to succeed.

Read to Succeed Despite pandemic school closures, over 50 children received virtual reading mentorship through Read to Succeed to help them meet the goal of grade-level reading. Volunteer readers and students connected over a good book—and Zoom!
Women United Literacy Kits 500 local families received early learning kits through a Women United service project. Women United members sponsored and assembled the kits, which included books, blocks, coloring supplies, and other educational activities. In partnership with the four Lower Shore Judy Centers for early learning, the kits were distributed to families with children ages birth to five who could most benefit.
Imagination Library
EDUCATION
Programs
United Way’s partnership with Dolly Parton’s Dollywood Foundation has provided a free book each month by mail to participating local children ages birth to five for nearly a decade. Not only does the program prepare children for kindergarten, it also builds bonds between little ones and their caregivers as they share story time and fun literacyboosting activities. The model of home delivery continued to be even more important than ever as the pandemic limited access to libraries for many families. Learn more or enroll at uwles.org/ImaginationLibrary. Join us in summer of 2022 as we celebrate 10 years of Imagination Library on the Shore!

FINANCIAL STABILITY & ALICE
® 6
Financial Stability continues to be out of reach for many local families. The pandemic’s lingering effects have raised more challenges for families to meet their basic needs as stable employment, food security, affordable housing and child care remain obstacles every month for nearly half of our neighbors. Together, we continue to stabilize families for stronger communities across the Lower Shore.

Pandemic Response
The pandemic created overwhelming financial hardships for many of our neighbors. Crucial services were able to continue and respond thanks to a spirit of collaboration. Maryland 211 continued operating 24 hours a day throughout the closures to direct callers to resources at local nonprofits. UWLES was proud to participate in the Vulnerable Populations Taskforce. One Stop events continued in local parks, parking lots, and other sites in the region to distribute food, PPE, information, and vaccines to those in need.
Maryland ALICE® Report
COVID-19 Impact Survey: In the spring of 2021, UWLES partnered with United Ways across Maryland to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Marylanders living as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) or in poverty. The survey revealed that these lower-income groups reported significantly greater challenges related to employment, childcare, and meeting household expenses. Applying a Racial Equity Lens: The 2020 report, ALICE in Maryland: A Financial Hardship Study, shows that 46% of Lower Shore households struggle to afford basic expenses such as housing, childcare, healthcare and transportation. The burden is greater for most non-white households. Over 60% of African American households are below the ALICE threshold compared to less than 40% of white households across the Lower Shore. Learn more and access free online reports and data tools for other demographic groups at uwles.org/ALICE.
The Maryland ALICE Report is possible thanks to the Maryland State Association of United Ways, United for ALICE and these generous sponsors:

VOLUNTEERS LIVE UNITED Volunteering in a Pandemic During the COVID-19 pandemic, nonprofits across the country saw an increase in need for services, funding, and volunteers. While closures and social distancing protocols disrupted some volunteer opportunities, others were able to adapt and continue — and new ways to serve emerged. Neighbors on the Lower Shore still showed up to assist their community through UWLES affinity groups and with local nonprofits through the Get Connected Volunteer Center. Our Student United Way continued to come together both virtually and in person during the 2020-2021 year. Students engaged in SUW create change and impact through volunteerism, engagement, advocacy and FUNdraising. While the 2020-2021 student year was heavily impacted by COVID, SUW participated in several community service projects and fundraising events.
During a year when many families with children saw even greater needs, the Emerging Leaders continued their focus on youth and families in our community. They provided Thanksgiving meal baskets for 21 local families in partnership with TidalHealth’s nursing staff, and together with Women United, brought holiday hope, breakfast baskets and gifts to 75 neighbors, easing the financial burden and stress the holidays can bring. They capped it off with a fun networking and fundraising evening with local chambers’ young professionals at a Delmarva Shorebirds game. Women United continued to fulfill their mission of supporting women and children, though like so many others, most was done virtually. Throughout the year, WU hosted 5 Community & Conversation gatherings via Zoom, assembled 500 Literacy Kits for the four counties’ Judy Centers, and worked alongside Emerging Leaders to create a special Holiday season for local families. Although we were not able to meet in person to continue our Read To Succeed program, many of our volunteers were able to read with students via zoom. Even the annual fundraiser, Power of the Purse, went virtual with an online auction. The Community Impact Committee dedicated nearly 800 hours of volunteer service alongside staff to do the work of allocating 2022 funding to our partner agencies. Site visits were conducted virtually again this year—and CIC members and agency staff alike were experienced pros this time around! Two days were set aside for the CIC to come together—in person—to make critical funding decisions. Investing donor dollars in the most impactful way is paramount and CIC volunteers devote their time, energy, and knowledge to ensure this outcome. MAC, Inc. generously provided the hospitality of their meeting space and catering services. 10

While our traditional Dine & Stay United annual program in Ocean City was on hold for the 2020-21 campaign due to the pandemic, the Ocean City HotelMotel-Restaurant Association, the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Ocean City and the resort’s businesses, staff and residents showed resiliency in true LIVE UNITED fashion, working together to welcome visitors and locals. To honor this and the nonprofits helping our neighbors, the Harrison Group and 5th Generation/Tito’s Vodka generously donated $10,000 for the Dine & Stay United program. As of 8/31/21, the program has raised over $226,000! Thank You to our Program Partners!

In its place, we swapped ball gowns and tuxes for fun jammies to present Home for the Holidays: A Night of Giving — a virtual live stream event to help support United Way’s mission. The evening featured stories how every gift makes a local impact with perspectives from donors, volunteers and partners. Emcee Randy Scott, producers PAC 14, and a small team of elves kept the festivities moving. Wrapped up with special musical performances, a grand prize drawing and a companion online auction, our community embraced the season of giving and raised over $65,000!

During this incredibly challenging year, local docs and the entire medical community stepped up in countless ways for all of us. On top of their everyday heroics, 54 physicians gave over $33,000 from their hearts for this year’s 100 Docs campaign! Since 2013, thanks to the leadership of Dr. Mark Edney, Dr. Charles Silvia and Dr. Letitia Banks, over $362,000 has been raised to help create a healthier community for us all. We thank all our local docs & medical professionals for all they do!

The LIVE UNITED Response Fund helped provide access to care for our clinical program. The need for access to mental health therapy was, and still remains, critical. -Worcester Youth & Family Services 24 24

We are constantly amazed at the lengths that they go to in helping their neighbors. Most of the time they are helping people that they do not know and probably will never know or will ever be recognized for their kindness. The United Way takes the efforts and contributions of so many people and efficiently and effectively organizes and allocates resources where they can best be used. The Eastern Shore is a great place to live and work and while I have only been here a short time – as I have been told by locals many times, 30 years; this is home for Andrea and me. With God’s help, we will continue to do our small part to help out by helping the United Way. Darrell and Andrea Fearin, Owners Delmarva Printing & Design, Inc. Rogers Graphics
