LIVE UNITED
2022-2023 Impact Report
Thank you for making a difference during our 2022-2023 campaign! United Way’s donors, volunteers, staff and partners make our collective impact possible. Because of you, we achieved several milestones worth celebrating. See further details inside this report.
Our organization’s board restructuring took effect this year and we began developing a new Advisory Council. This multi-year process and other strategic initiatives will continue to guide our mission, improve efficiencies, and strengthen our future.
Following our 10th Anniversary of partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, our dream to enroll children at birth was realized with the launch of SmartStart in collaboration with TidalHealth. In the first six months, over 400 newborns received their first book and were automatically enrolled at the hospital. SmartStart is a game changer to help more families access ageappropriate books and empower early development skills.
The annual Lower Shore Nonprofit Summit was better than ever in partnership with Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore and PACE at Salisbury University, with Governor Wes Moore delivering the keynote. His experience in nonprofit leadership and commitment to supporting cross-sector collaborations inspired professionals from across the region to build new connections and explore best practices.
Pam and Steve joined colleagues at the first post-pandemic United Way Worldwide conference. Being together to share experiences and brainstorm challenges with United Ways of all sizes was insightful. We are all independent nonprofits who focus, fundraise and invest in our local communities but remain United in Purpose to help everyone thrive and achieve better health, education and financial outcomes.
Our Maryland United Ways and national partner, United for ALICE, released ALICE in the Crosscurrents. Assessing COVID impacts for Marylanders, the updated report demonstrates over 43% of Lower Shore households struggle to afford the basics. The interactive data tools and expanded resources provide a framework to help leaders across sectors – business, government, education, healthcare, nonprofits and more - consider the barriers local neighbors face to find creative solutions.
Looking ahead, today’s challenges – changing trends in giving and volunteering, inflation, inequities for ALICE, and nonprofits’ capacity constraints – will drive us and inspire new opportunities for tomorrow. We appreciate your support and how every person makes progress possible. Together, We LIVE UNITED.

Our Salisbury University Student United Way (SUSUW) Club is a GREAT way for students to engage, not only with United Way, but also local nonprofits. SUSUW fosters friendship, collaboration and community spirit. Volunteer projects included: Chesapeake Housing Mission, National Folk Festival, Wicomico Humane Society, Kind SBY, Tri-County Overdose Awareness Day, Seagull Century, Wicomico Goes Purple Night of Hope, UWLES’ Campaign Kickoff, and Holiday Ball. Members also welcomed nonprofit guest speakers for club meetings and got hands-on with fundraising for local programs. Tomorrow’s leaders are already leading!
This year, Emerging Leaders had great growth and came together to serve their largest number of neighbors to date through holiday outreach. Thanksgiving meal baskets generously donated through combined efforts of TidalHealth’s nursing staff, Perdue, and Maryland Food Bank were distributed to local families. These Secret Santas also provided holiday gifts and breakfast baskets for dozens of families across the Lower Shore. They wrapped up the year in style at their annual Christmas in July joint fundraiser with the local chambers’ young professionals at a Delmarva Shorebirds game.
Women United is a group of dedicated women committed to improving the lives of women, children and families in our community. Women United’s quarterly Community & Conversations bring women of all backgrounds together to relax, connect and learn about community partners and the needs they serve. This dynamic group’s signature programs, Read to Succeed and Girls on the Run, brought volunteers together with local students to encourage, empower and build their confidence and skills. They help with other projects like Secret Santa and program supply drives, know how to put the FUN and creativity in fundraising, and welcome new members anytime!

ALICE IN THE CROSSCURRENTS
The ranks of Lower Shore households unable to afford the basics grew by more than 500 during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a total of 36,425 households or 43% struggling to afford the basics by 2021, according to a new report from UWLES, United Ways across Maryland, and research partner United For ALICE.
This staggering 43% includes households in poverty as well as those defined as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), earning above the Federal Poverty Level but less than what’s needed to survive in the modern economy. ALICE families have been overlooked and undercounted by traditional poverty measures. ALICE includes local workers in a wide range of low-wage jobs, who often have little or no savings, such as childcare workers, home health aides, and cashiers - and many more who were our front lines during the pandemic.
Updated in 2023 - ALICE in the Crosscurrents: COVID and Financial Hardship in Maryland -- includes an expanded collection of free online data tools, available at UnitedForALICE.org:
• Economic Viability Dashboard
• Legislative District Tool
• Wage Tool
• ALICE Essentials Index
• County-Level Data with Demographics
• Indicators of Well-Being
Along with increasing public and government awareness, the ALICE Report benefits local nonprofits by providing data to inform program decisions, substantiate the need for their services, and empower advocacy.
We use the ALICE data to determine a Scout’s eligibility for financial assistance because it helps us understand the true costs families face to meet their basic needs.
- J. Ray Teat
Director,
Boy Scouts of America Del-Mar-Va Council
We use the ALICE data to show potential funders how critically important the Library’s programs are for our community.

Imagination Library Grows with SmartStart
It’s a bumper crop of books and babies! More local families are getting the full early childhood literacy benefits of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library thanks to a partnership between UWLES and TidalHealth. SmartStart allows families welcoming a newborn to automatically enroll in Imagination Library before leaving the hospital. Families take home a welcome bag including a book and literacy materials available in three languages. Enrollment in all four counties continues to grow, which means more children—and their caregivers—are discovering the love and benefits of reading! We thank the Richard A. Henson Foundation, Donnie Williams Foundation, PNC Bank and other generous donors for supporting Imagination Library and SmartStart.

UWLES was proud to partner with Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore and PACE at Salisbury University to present the 2023 Lower Shore Nonprofit Summit. Maryland Governor Wes Moore gave the keynote address and emphasized the critical services the sector provides.
The Lower Shore Nonprofit Summit was one of a kind. It was especially helpful to our organization, as a smaller nonprofit, to receive professional development and opportunities to grow and increase our impact. We can’t wait to attend the next summit in 2024!
-
Natalie Bennett Executive Director, One Year to Empowerment
Over 100 nonprofit professionals gathered to explore professional development topics and network with colleagues. Attendees made new connections through speed networking and chose sessions on subjects such as advocacy, sustainability, emotional intelligence, strategic planning, human resources, and cultural competency. The Lower Shore Nonprofit Summit is part of UWLES’ commitment to providing support and training for the local nonprofit community, and we are excited for the continued growth of this annual event!
Support for the 2023 Lower Shore Nonprofit Summit was generously provided by CareFirst and Delmarva Power: An Exelon Company.

Girls on the Run, supported by Women United, empowers girls to thrive on and off the track. For the first time, the Spring 5k was held on the Eastern Shore in Wicomico county. 117 girls from 9 Lower Shore teams participated in Fall & Spring, and several Women United volunteers were coaches.
Women United, community volunteers and staff helped over two dozen elementary students in Wicomico & Somerset counties build reading skills through Read to Succeed. And we had lots of fun reading in all our counties during Read Across America week!

55 high school students from all four counties participated in the 2023 Lower Shore Addiction Awareness Art Competition. Best in Show and county-level winners were honored at the opening exhibit in partnership with Salisbury Art Space. Exhibits were also hosted by Art League of Ocean City and Somerset County Arts Council, and the art was shared at community events. The competition was possible thanks to the four counties’ Health Departments, Salisbury Elks 817, Gannett Foundation and the educators who encourage and facilitate students’ participation.

Our Neighbors
The Wicomico Retired School Personnel Association, an amazing group of retired teachers, administrators, faculty and staff had their highest year ever in the 2022-2023 campaign! These dedicated donors continue to provide leadership in our community and make a difference. We thank each of them for their years of service and continued support!
I support United Way as part of my service to the Wicomico Retired School Personnel Association’s projects to enhance opportunities for folks in my community. It is a way to give back to a community who has given much to me.
- Cheryl Doughty Wicomico Retired School Personnel Association
117 Donors ~ $21,345
I first became involved with UWLES while working as the Program Director for the Kid’s Café program at Salisbury Urban Ministries in 2009. Working with UWLES staff was always a joy because they were caring, thoughtful, and always ready and willing to help. Later, when I worked as the Coordinator of the Project READ adult literacy program, once again UWLES showed that they were there to offer not only financial support but also program support and professional development opportunities. Their efforts in the community to provide multilevel support to area non-profits have always been an inspiration to me. I was very honored when I was asked to be on the Community Impact Committee. There is no greater feeling than to be a part of an organization that cares about the citizens of our community and UWLES proves it consistently through their actions.

Give United
Our Tocqueville, Anchor Society and Leadership Circle recognize donors who give annual gifts of $250 or more. This leadership in giving inspires others to get involved, both as first time donors and those who increase their support. We are thankful for their commitment to investing in our community.

Anchor Society: $500+ 347 Donors ~ $404,978 Leadership Circle: $250+ 514 Donors ~ $149,958
United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore has been a passion of mine for many years. Serving in Worcester County Public Schools as a teacher and administrator for over 20 years, I have seen firsthand how influential and life changing UWLES has been, reaching so many families. Whether it is the personal payroll deduction of my wife and I or the school wide efforts during our annual campaign, we know UWLES is top notch.
- Matthew Record Principal, Snow Hill Middle School
The 100 DOCS Annual Campaign, founded by Dr. Mark Edney, empowers medical professionals beyond the lifesaving work they do every day. To date, nearly $411,000 has been raised by local physicians! We are thankful to this amazing group of docs who make our neighbors healthier and stronger in their practices and the community!
36 Donors ~ $23,460
The 1944 Legacy Circle has grown to sixteen individuals who have informed UWLES of their intent to support the future of our community. These individual gifts and bequests will help ensure that the needs our neighbors have tomorrow, whatever they may be, continue to be addressed. Establishing support for generations to come creates a legacy for each member and lasting impact for the entire community.
Marilyn and I are proud to continue to support the United Way as part of the 1944 Legacy Circle. The critically important work of the United Way will continue past our days on this earth and we’d be honored to be part of that work as our legacy.

I support the United Way because I’ve seen firsthand through my volunteering as a Women United committee member the real impact that my support makes to my local community. It is fulfilling to be part of something that makes a positive difference in the lives of others. I have also participated in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program with my son since his birth. Receiving a book in the mail once a month through the program is something he looks forward to and gets him excited to read something new. I’m proud to be a United Way volunteer.

Affinity FUNdraising Events
The SU Student United Way were frightfully delighted to bring back the 7th Zombie 5K Dash and 1 Mile walk on Sunday, October 23rd, on the hauntingly beautiful campus of Salisbury University! Over 65 walkers and runners joined our horde of zombies in a race to raise funds for the SUSUW and UWLES. Participants enjoyed an officially timed race event, snacks, a costume contest and awards for top finishers while dodging the dead, raising over $3,000! Special thanks to Salisbury University for their continued partnership, and to our sponsors, participants, volunteers and zombies!
Thank you to the official sponsors of the 2023 Halloween 5K: Pepsi Bottling Venture, Choptank Electric Cooperative, Avery Hall Insurance Group, Salisbury University Foundation, Chesapeake Utilities, Charles Brown Glass Co., Etch Art Awards, Red Sun Custom Apparel, Minuteman Press and Walmart
The annual Christmas in July joint fundraiser with the local chambers’ young professionals was held at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. This networking event doubled the prior year’s turnout and was our largest event attendance to date. Over $2,000 was raised to support the Emerging Leaders’ holiday outreach programs. Many thanks to these young leaders, our chamber partners, and these generous sponsors: Whiting Turner, Becker Morgan, The Insurance Market and SVN.
Women United supports programs like Read to Succeed, Girls on the Run and other projects by hosting creative FUNdraising events throughout the year. From a Sip & Paint night, Spring Cookie Decorating, or a wine dinner at Sobo’s to a Summer Sizzle Beach Bag online raffle and their signature Power of the Purse event, they enjoy getting together to make an impact. Last year they raised over $13,000 to invest in our community!

On May 5th, UWLES hosted the 3rd Annual United Way Open Golf Tournament. This has become a wellestablished event that brings together golfers and supporters from across the region for a beautiful day on the links at Green Hill Golf & Country Club. Beyond being a fun and engaging way to spend the day, it also had a greater purpose and raised over $21,000 to support United Way’s investments in our direct and partner programs.
We are grateful for our Dine, Stay and Play United participants, sponsors and partners! Thank you to everyone who supported during the summer of 2022. Over $27,000 was raised to create impact with UWLES partner and direct service programs in education, health and financial stability.
This FUNdraising program engages local hospitality partners who offer a portion of proceeds from a hotel stay, menu item or play package for UWLES during the summer months. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, you can patronize Ocean City & Worcester county business partners to help bring brighter days for 1 in 3 local neighbors all year long.

The 19th Annual Holiday Ball was filled with joy and celebration to ring in the season of giving. Over $184,000 was raised through this signature event to help our Lower Shore neighbors. Many thanks to our committee chairs, Briana Mattern and Rush Stehley, and the Holiday Ball Committee and staff for another excellent event, and to our sponsors and guests who make this our biggest fundraiser each year.

Andrea and I once again are honored to play a small part in helping the United Way tell the stories of the kindness of the people of the Eastern Shore. We are constantly amazed at the lengths that they go to in helping their neighbors. Most of the time they are helping people that they do not know and probably will never know or will ever be recognized for their kindness.
The United Way takes the efforts and contributions of so many people and efficiently and effectively organizes and allocates resources where they can best be used.
The Eastern Shore is a great place to live and work and while I have only been here a short time – as I have been told by locals many times, 32 years; this is home for Andrea and me. With God’s help, we will continue to do our small part to help out by helping the United Way.
