Leadership Reflection

Reflecting on our 2021-2022 year brings back a wide range of memories and emotions for everyone. The experiences everyone faced during the pandemic –at home, school and work - were life changing for many.

Locally, as we balanced caution with a desire for normalcy, we stayed resilient, knowing recovery cannot happen overnight. The public, private, and nonprofit sectors continued to embrace collaboration and explore new ideas to meet the Lower Shore’s needs. Neighbors stepped up to give, advocate, and volunteer where they could. And it seems more of us have embraced the gift of grace -- for each other and ourselves.

United Way’s fundraising initiatives, partnerships, and outreach support dozens of local health, education, and financial stability programs. These efforts remained strong, and we were thrilled to have renewed events and new engagement during the year. But there is still opportunity, and need, for growth. We began implementing our recent Strategic Plan to improve efficiencies and explore how to impact our community in more meaningful ways.

A large focus this year was a restructuring of our Board of Directors’ size and terms, along with our bylaws. We simplified our Executive Committee structure, effective for the 2022-2023 year, and over the next several years will reduce our Board by more than half. These smaller groups will allow us to be nimbler and more responsive to changing community needs. We will soon develop an Advisory Council to provide broader representation from the counties we serve and flexibility for members to engage.

Improvements included embracing more digital outreach and reducing printed and mailed materials, saving resources and time in response to communication trends and supply challenges. To that end, we’ve streamlined the pages in this Impact Report by combining categories and moving our traditional lists of individual donors to the full digital version (which we hope you will view online, or please contact us for a copy).

We also began board and staff training to better understand the inequities and hardship that exist for countless neighbors due to race, disability, gender, age and more. Our increased attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion strives to reduce barriers for local nonprofits seeking United Way funding and partnership, while maintaining our commitment to responsible stewardship for our donors. Improving equitable access to United Way support will help all communities be better served by nonprofits that understand their needs and how to best provide help.

As we continue to improve and evolve, we thank you for your support of United Way and our community. Together, we inspire hope and create a stronger future for everyone.

IMPACTING HEALTH, EDUCATION

SUPPORTING YOUTH & FAMILIES

Several of our direct programs share a focus on children and families, and the pandemic continued to underscore this need. Our Imagination Library free book program is a key resource to reduce barriers of access to books and improve early learning. We celebrated a big anniversary and met new milestones this year – learn more on the next page! We were happy to have a small but successful return of Read 2 Succeed, and paired local elementary children with volunteers. Girls on the Run also returned to empower local girls to achieve health and wellness goals and build self-esteem while training for a 5k regional fun run. Our holiday outreach touched more families than ever by providing free meal baskets, gifts, hope and relief from the added financial and emotional stress the holidays bring.

PARTNERING FOR IMPACT

UWLES funding supported partner agencies engaged in vital work in our community. Our vulnerable populations received resources to increase financial stability through programs addressing a range of needs such as homelessness, food insecurity, social services and case management. Health programs supported physical, mental and developmental needs and improved access to care. Youth were able to succeed through enrichment activities and athletics, mentoring, and academic help.

ADDICTION AWARENESS

In 2022, 71 middle and high school students participated in the Lower Shore Addiction Awareness Visual Arts Competition. Thanks to funding from the Maryland Opioid Operational Command Center prizes were awarded in each county, and to one overall Best in Show winner. The awards were announced at an opening reception and exhibition at Salisbury Art Space. Exhibitions were also held at Somerset County Arts Council, Art League of Ocean City and other community events. The competition is offered in partnership with the Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester County Health Departments. Art by Best in Show Winner, Brianah Shockley. Learn more and see art online at uwles.org/art.

Wellness Made Easy is a health literacy curriculum for local partners to use with client programs. The materials are provided in two levels of general literacy – 3rd grade reading level and a pictorial version - to help learners gain the knowledge and confidence to be more in charge of their own health. Participants reported a better understanding of their needs and more confidence to find their voice in their own care. SingleCare is a free prescription assistance program available to any household struggling to cover prescription costs. Through a partnership with United Way, last year 1,351 local neighbors saved over $154,000 using SingleCare. Savings cards are available in English and Spanish, and the discounts and other health tools can also be accessed through a free app available on Google Play or iTunes. Find out more at uwles.org/SingleCare.

JUMPSTART FOR NONPROFITS

UWLES,

NONPROFIT SUMMIT: TOGETHER AGAIN

UWLES was proud to partner with Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore to present the 2022 Nonprofit Summit in June. The theme for the day-long professional development event was Together Again, was an opportunity for about 125 local nonprofit professionals to gather in person at the Wicomico Civic Center as pandemic restrictions eased. The event featured a keynote address by Paula Morris, a vendor expo, and sessions on topics of importance to the sector. Support for the Summit was generously provided by CareFirst and the Campbell Foundation.

Our annual campaign videos share the stories behind the impact. In addition to Imagination Library, last year we featured these partner programs:

• Meals on Wheels, with MAC and Delmarva Community Services, who provide healthy, home-delivered meals for seniors.

• Kids’ Café, with Salisbury Urban Ministries, who support local youth with academic enrichment, and inspire families to give back.

• Maryland 211, with Life Crisis Center, who manage resource referrals 24/7/365 with live call support, answering thousands of calls monthly for neighbors seeking help. Many thanks to our partner, TidalHealth, for making the videos possible. Follow the QR to hear the stories and learn more!

the Richard A. Henson Foundation, and Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, in partnership with Network for Good, invests in local nonprofits with integrated tools, planning, and one-on-one coaching over a 12-month period. This program known as Jumpstart helps nonprofits immediately sustain their programs. The most recent cohorts were Horizons Delmarva, Tri Community Mediation, and Village of Hope.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS!

2022 marked ten years of UWLES providing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. The popular early childhood literacy program provides a free book each month through the mail to children from birth until their fifth birthday. We’ve grown from just over 100 children in our first month, to now over 4,600 served monthly and are the 2nd largest program in Maryland.

While building critical early learning skills, the program promotes positive engagement between children and caregivers. Children learn that reading is fun, and early exposure to books means they are more likely to enter kindergarten ready to learn. In fact, our participants perform better on annual kindergarten readiness assessments, and that’s a big win! Find

SmartStart

Year-round outreach and partnerships to enroll children in Imagination Library at an early age has driven the program’s growth. But to maximize the benefits of early development and kindergarten readiness, reaching them sooner is crucial. What if we could enroll babies when they are born? During our Anniversary Celebration in Summer 2022, we announced the SmartStart partnership with TidalHealth to make it happen! With SmartStart, all babies born at TidalHealth can automatically enroll and receive a Welcome Pack with their first book, parent reading guide and local resource information. Welcome Packs will be provided in English, Spanish and Haitian. Families will also have access to car seats and additional supports through TidalHealth as the initiative grows. We thank the Richard A. Henson Foundation for their leading support to inspire other donors and make this dream a reality. Watch for the launch in early 2023!

Volunteers LIVE UNITED

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

From serving those in need to celebrating local communities, opportunities to volunteer abounded on the Lower Shore. And volunteers responded to the call! Individuals, families, workplaces, civic groups and our own UWLES affinity groups continued to make a positive impact through their willingness to give their time, energy, and expertise. The National Folk Festival continued to bring hundreds of volunteers together from across the region. The Get Connected Volunteer Center connects volunteers with more than 150 nonprofits through this free resource. Learn more and get involved at ShoreGetConnected.org. 1,749

INSPIRING CHANGE

Our Salisbury University Student United Way Club is a great way for students to engage with United Way and local nonprofit organizations. Over 65 active members gave over 260 volunteer hours towards more than 32 volunteer and advocacy projects, raised over $400 to support local programs and impacted more than 1,405 families and individuals. They took part in a wheelchair ramp build, National Folk Festival, Humane Society Dog Walk, Kind SBY school support. Plus, they helped with UWLES engagements such as Wild about Reading at the Zoo and the Women’s Leadership Conference and Holiday Ball. And that’s all on top of club meetings with local guest speakers!

INSPIRING HOPE

This year Emerging Leaders came together to serve their largest number of neighbors to date. Thanksgiving meal baskets - generously donated through combined efforts of TidalHealth’s nursing staff, Perdue, and the MD Food Bank - were distributed to 25 families. In addition, their Secret Santa program was able to provide holiday gifts to over 75 children in 26 households, along with breakfast baskets for each family. These leaders wrapped up the year in style for their annual Christmas in July joint fundraiser, networking with local Chambers’ young professionals at a Delmarva Shorebirds game.

INSPIRING ACTION

Women United continued to drive impact through hands-on programs, new projects and Community & Conversations events. The Read 2 Succeed program returned to help students in several classes at Pemberton Elementary strengthen their reading skills. Girls on the Run inspired nearly 50 girls through training and mentoring to complete a local 5k fun run. A new project supported Salisbury’s Anne Street Village for our homeless population by supplying all items to prepare a pallet house for occupancy. Additionally, in partnership with Piedmont employees, Welcome Home bags were prepared including toiletries, blankets, stationary and more home items for each of the 25 residents at the Village. Our 1st Annual Beach Bag raffle raided over $3,000, and Power of the Purse returned, raising nearly $10,000 to support Women United’s programs and outreach.

INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY

UWLES’s partner agencies provide invaluable programs supporting health, education, and financial stability on the Lower Shore. Through the work of the Community Impact Committee those partnerships are strengthened. The committee conducted annual site visits — many back in person — which provide the opportunity to more deeply understand the work taking place and the impact of the funds invested. Partner agency MAC, Inc. once again generously provided the meeting space and refreshment services for the committee’s final review sessions.

INDIVIDUAL GIVING

Our Tocqueville, Anchor Society and Leadership Circle recognize donors who give annual gifts in excess of $250. The generosity of these groups inspires others in our community to get involved. We are thankful for their giving leadership and commitment to supporting our work.

The 100 Docs campaign, founded by Dr. Mark Edney, empowers medical professionals beyond the lifesaving work they do every day. To date, nearly $400,000 has been raised by local physicians! Many thanks to this special group of doctors who embrace working together to create a healthier and stronger community.

The Wicomico Retired School Personnel Association, an incredible group of retired teachers, administrators, faculty and staff, continue to “raise the bar” on giving by encouraging new retirees to participate. Through their years of service in our schools, they understand our community’s needs first hand and continue to step up to make a difference. We appreciate their years of service and continued support!

Our 1944 Legacy Circle recognizes donors who have shared their intent of support for United Way’s future work. Their giving through a trust, will or other financial plan will sustain our mission for generations to come. Last year brought the launch of our Legacy Fund, providing for financial growth of these investments and the potential for annual microgrant program support. We are honored to carry their love for our community into the future.

107 Teachers from Wicomico Retired Teachers Association contributed $13,125

The Wicomico Retired School Personnel Association, an incredible group of retired teachers, administrators, faculty and staff, continue to “raise the bar” on giving by encouraging new retirees to participate. Through their years of service in our schools, they understand our community’s needs first hand and continue to step up to make a difference. We appreciate their years of service and continued support!

“We have been blessed in our lives. To demonstrate our gratefulness, we wanted to continue our support of UWLES and all the community agencies who serve those needing educational, financial or health assistance. Our gift is a way to sustain the mission of United Way well into the future.”
- Ginny & Walter Matern

Our 1944 Legacy Circle recognizes donors who have shared their intent of support for United Way’s future work. Their giving through a trust, will or other financial plan will sustain our mission for generations to come. Last year brought the launch of our Legacy Fund, providing for financial growth of these investments and the potential for annual microgrant program support. We are honored to carry their love for our community into the future.

“The United Way’s mission of using the community to advance health, education, and financial stability has always meant so much to me. I am so thankful for the blessings in life my family and I have received. It seems like the best way to express my gratitude is by passing some forward. There is a quote from William James, “The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” I hope by this legacy gift to the UWLES; I am doing a bit of that.”

UWLES serves as a conduit of resources for every aspect of human services across a broad range of recipients; seniors, youth, and vulnerable populations - all while building community trust and relationships. As a long-time donor and volunteer, I have the privilege of helping to determine where those resources are distributed with the same integrity, inclusion, diversity, and equitable opportunity for each nonprofit.”
- Sharon Morris

We love our Dine, Stay and Play United participants, sponsors and partners! Thank you to everyone who participated for our 2021-22 campaign year. Over $36,000 was raised to support local health, education and financial stability programs. Did you know? $36k provides the funds to answer 3,450 resource and referral calls through MD 2-1-1. $36k covers the cost for 138 seniors to receive one month’s worth of home delivered meals and safety checks. $36k gives 1,384 children enrolled in Imagination Library program one free book a month for a full year. $36K affords 23 individuals in transitional housing one year of utility costs. Now that is real impact!

Frisbee Golf

Frisbee Golf returned as Risk Placement Services (RPS) and Gallagher presented the 9th Annual Disc Golf Tournament for United Way’s Imagination Library Program at Schumaker Pond Park in the summer of 2022. 30 teams and multiple sponsors braved the heat for a fun day on the disc course, with opportunities for networking, lunch and games while raising dollars to provide more books to local children. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and players, this was a record breaking year, raising over $28,000 to provide Imagination Library for more young children on the Lower Eastern Shore.

Andrea and I once again are honored to play a small part in helping the United Way tell the stories of the kindness of the people of the Eastern Shore. We are constantly amazed , at the lengths that they go to in helping their neighbors. Most of the time they are helping people that they do not know and probably will never know or will ever be recognized for their kindness.

The United Way takes the efforts and contributions of so many people and efficiently and effectively organizes and allocates resources where they can best be used.

The Eastern Shore is a great place to live and work and while I have only been here a short time - as I have been told by locals many times, 30 years; this is home for Andrea and me. With God's help, we will continue to do our small part to help out by helping the United Way.
