On the contrary, they may as well be the answers to the original space conditions and the correct settlement to the contemporary demands. The studies that have, for a long time, been promoted by the University of Coimbra, and conducted for each individual building or area (The Botanical Garden, for example), aim at determining the most correct way to intervene. There was no general formula but a specific plan for each situation according to a common strategy. (Compare in particular with the volume Master Plans). In cultural terms, the statutes themselves show the authenticity of the traditions, festivities and cycles of student life, dress and the Song of Coimbra. They have survived practically unaltered throughout the centuries, with slight changes due to the need to adapt to new historical moments, thus showing their ability to endure and to maintain their significance. As the academic and symbolic centre of a city, a region and a country, the Alta reveals the character and the spirit of this place, being easily recognisable by its urban profile or by the image of one of its most conspicuous elements, the University Tower. On its top, four bells continue to strike the hours that regulate the rhythm of the academic life and the everyday life of the city. Canção de Coimbra e os próprios Estatutos relevam a sua autenticidade pela permanência ao longo de vários séculos, com pequenas adaptações pontuais devidas à necessidade de integração aos novos momentos históricos, patenteando igualmente a sua capacidade de resistir e de manter vivas essas tradições.
Finally, the main attribute for the authenticity of the applicant property, the University of Coimbra — Alta and Sofia is expressed in the ability to self-establish and write the history of the university education since the Middle Ages until the present in all its material, cultural, ideological, scientific and pedagogical dimensions.
