Introduction to the Summit 6

THE UA GLOBAL SUMMIT 2017 November 7th - 9th 2017 Dublin, Ireland

T

he UA Global Summit is a unique event, during which the top performing students and recent graduates from across the world are brought together for three days of networking, discussion and celebration. The theme for the Summit is ‘Know Your Worth, Know Your Responsibility’ and is designed to influence future influencers by impressing upon them the importance of leadership, while equipping them with the knowledge necessary to further their careers, their ideas and their research.

The Summit is designed to allow participants to take time out of their everyday lives and routines and to focus on personal development, and to reflect on their achievements heretofore. This year attendees will be coming to Dublin from countries all over the world such as Singapore, Canada, Vietnam, Qatar, Sweden, Australia, Iran, South Africa, the Netherlands and Japan. The international aspect of The Undergraduate Awards programme and summit is extremely important and valuable.

The UA Global Summit is built around the central tenet of sharing information, knowledge and ideas, while making long-lasting interdisciplinary and international connections and friendships. This is embodied by UPresent, during which 70 of the 130 participants will present their winning research. The Colloquium is another crucial component of the three-day event, where inspirational speakers are assembled from a diverse range of backgrounds and industries to share their success stories as well their tales of perseverance over failure.

This year’s Global Winners will be presented with the Inaugural Thomas Clarkson Gold Medal at the Gold Medal Ceremony in Dublin City Hall. Opening Dinner

OPENING DINNER Tuesday 7th of November, 7pm Smock Alley Theatre

T

he UA Global Summit kicks off with the Opening Dinner taking place in the historical Smock Alley Theatre. This stunning theatre dates from 1662 and was the first Theatre Royal to open outside of London, during the Restoration period. The theatre remains largely unchanged since its doors opened in the mid-17th century and, for this reason, it is one of the most important sites in European theatre history. During that time it became a Catholic Church, from 1811 until 1989, including during the Catholic Penal Period, when Ireland, under English rule, was forbidden from calling the Catholic faithful to prayer. This

was an injustice the parish priest, based at the renamed St Michael’s and St. John’s, could not abide by. He famously climbed to the top of the building and rang the illegally installed bell, which was the first time a Catholic church bell had sounded in Ireland for 300 years. This earned the bell the nickname of ‘Ireland’s Liberty Bell’. In 2012 the building returned to its roots, reopening as a theatre. This dinner will see the UA Global Summit 2017 opened by local writer, historian and artist, Pat Liddy. We will also have a panel discussion where some of our international judges will discuss their highlights of this year’s entries.

GUEST OF HONOUR

PAT LIDDY

Pat is an Irish artist, historian, writer, illustrator, broadcaster, mapmaker, and environmental lobbyist who has helped make Dublin a global tourist attraction. Pat published a column in The Irish Times for ten years, in which he illustrated the various fascinating faces of Dublin, and he is the author of ten books. In 2005 he founded Pat Liddy’s Walking Tours of Dublin. 8

T

he Colloquium is another highlight of the UA Global Summit 2017. We have assembled speakers and breakout leaders from the worlds of science, business, the arts, humanities and activism. We want to provide as diverse and thought-provoking a schedule of speakers and interactions as possible and this year we have the most relevant and exciting speakers from Ireland and internationally. The Colloquium is all about discussion, debate and deliberation. We encourage participants to engage with the speakers and breakout leaders to challenge, inquire and, ultimately, think big. The theme is centred around the tagline of ‘Know Your Worth, Know Your Responsibility’, and is designed to light a spark to allow you to unleash your full potential.

Farmleigh House is the official guest residence of the President of Ireland and the Irish government. Those who conduct state visits to Ireland stay in this spectacular house, including former guests such as Barrack Obama and Queen Elizabeth II. This house originally belonged to the preeminent Guinness family – famous brewers, innovators and philanthropists. The house itself dates back to the mid-1700s, with the current incarnation built in 1873 by the grandson of Arthur Guinness, Edward Guinness, who became Baron Iveagh and later Earl Iveagh. The house was acquired by the Irish Government in 1999 and opened for use in 2001 following an extensive refurbishment.

B

orn at a very difficult period in South Africa’s history, Chris made a decision early in his life to become an activist and oppose the racially based system of ‘apartheid’. This decision was to put him on a direct collision course with the ‘apartheid regime’ which resulted in several spells of incarceration, torture and near-death experiences. After Nelson Mandela’s release in 1990 and the fall of ‘apartheid’, Chris worked with Nelson Mandela until his retirement as a bodyguard and also got involved in the delicate negotiations with the ‘apartheid regime’ resulting in subsequent agreement and

the drafting of the new constitution. At present Chris works within various sectors as a keynote speaker and uses stories from his past to inspire positive change. His talks cover various themes including determination, resilience, courage, humanity, courage and forgiveness. Chris draws mainly from the important lessons he learned from Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

THOMAS CLARKSON GOLD MEDAL

I

n 1785, Thomas Clarkson entered an essay competition at the University of Cambridge on the topic of Is it lawful to make slaves of others against their will? In researching and reading around this topic in preparation for the essay competition, Clarkson became an abolitionist as he learned more of the horrors of slavery. This one essay changed the course of history as one of the most effective slavery abolitionists came to the fore. The essay was the beginning of a path which Clarkson would follow, which saw him help found the Society for Effecting the Abolition of Slavery and helped enact the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which ended British trade in slaves. In recognition of this, The Undergraduate Awards have named the Gold Medal after Thomas Clarkson to highlight the potential of well-crafted research and its power to change the world. 21 21

Gala Dinner

GALA DINNER

Thursday 9th of November, 8pm The Pillar Room

T

he Gala Dinner marks the finale of the UA Global Summit 2017, and will take place in the historic Pillar Room. Originally built in 1785, the Pillar Room has witnessed some highly significant events in the history of Ireland. In 1913 the Irish Volunteers was set up by Eoin MacNeill and held its first recruitment drive here at a time of heightened tensions amid a campaign for greater autonomy from the United Kingdom. The Irish Volunteers are considered the precursors of the Irish Army, making this event a significant milestone in the history of Ireland.

22

In 1927 the Pillar Room played host to the remains of Ireland’s republican heroine and first female government minister, Countess Constance Markievicz. After the recent Civil War in Ireland, the then government of the day refused to allow Markievicz to lie in state in the Mansion House or City Hall, and so it was the Pillar Room, steeped in military history, which received her before her burial. Markiewicz, who fought in the Easter 1916 Rising, was the first ever women elected to the UK parliament in Westminster, following a by-election in December 1918. She did not take her seat as the policy was one of abstention and so took up her seat in the first Dåil (parliament of Ireland) in January 1919.
