HeatherPalecekisananaloguephotographerworkinginthe mediumsofpinholephotography,lumenprinting,cyanotype,and mixedmediacameralessphotography.Sheusesthesehistorical photographyprocessesinexperimentalwaystocollaboratewith mothernature.Shehasbeenworkingaroundthethemeof relationshipsandconnectionformuchofherartisticcareer;manyof herartisticpursuitsexploretherelationshipshumanshavetonature andtheirimpactontheenvironment.Palecek’sgoalasanartististo createartworkthatmakespeoplethinkabouttheirownrelationshipwithmothernatureandto inspirethemtobemoremindful.
PalecekhasadegreeinfinearteducationandphotographyfromMontclairStateUniversity andhasbeenahighschoolphotographyteacherinNewJerseysince2010.Sheteaches immersiveworkshopsonalternativeandhistoricphotographyprocessesandistheleaderof theNJPinholeClub.Palecek’saward-winningworkhasbeenexhibitedlocallyand internationally.

Squash ‘Em showcasesauniqueblendoftheartsandsciencestohighlightartistHeather Palecek’spassionfortheenvironmentandtoeducateviewersonthewaysinwhichthe invasiveSpottedLanternflyisdestroyingNorthEasternforests.
Astheyovertakeforestsindroves,covertreesandsucktheirsap,andfinallyleavetheforests stickyandstainedinblackmold,SpottedLanternfliesareyetanotherprominentthreatto forestsacrossfourteenstatesandcounting.Palecekcleverlyconveysthedevastatingeffects oftheSpottedLanternflythroughaseriesofsevenpieces:sixgelatinprintsmadeby combiningliveinsects,pinholephotography,andabitofchemistry,aswellasanimpressive installationcontainingover250chemigrams.Herinnovativeapproachdeliversviewerswith notonlyunderstandingoftheseverityoftheSpottedLanternfly’seffectsonforestsbutalso anemotionalresponsetotheharshrealitiesofnatureconservation.
