Ifellinlovewithcolorsasachildworkinginmyfather’supholsteryshopasIgently touchedthevibrantsamplesofvelvetsandbrocadesandsenseddelightwithmyeyesas wellasmysoul.Isatontheconcretefloorandspenthoursmovingthesmallpiecesof magenta,grape,olive,pumpkin,gold,andotherdeliciouscolorsintoallpossible combinations.Idreamedofbeinganartistandusingallthesecolorsinmyownpaintings. Ihavefollowedthisdreamandhavebeenpaintingmostofmylife.ThisiswhatIneedto do.WithaloadedbrushinmyhandIfeeltheperfectrightnessofmydestinytobean artist.

Inlate1965ImovedtoNewYorkCitynotsomuchforitsbustlingartscene,but forachancetoblendintothecrowdandtothinkclearlyaboutchoicesforafuturewhich wouldsoonbelifechanging.IgavebirthtohealthytwinboysinAprilof1966andsoon movedtoBostonwiththeirfather Twinstookalotofmytimeandenergyforthenext fouryearsbutIcontinuedtodoart.Ihadnomoneyformaterials,butImanagedtouse imagesandscrapsofcolorfromoldmagazinestomakecollages.In1969Iwasableto setupaprintmakingstudioinanunusedbedroomwhereIwouldworkatnightwhenmy childrenwereasleep.Ifellinlovewiththeprocessofserigraphy(alsoknownas silk-screening)andthebrilliantcolorsoftheprintinginks.Ibegantocreatelimited editionprints,inspiredbyplants,flowers,applesandvalentines.SoonIbegantoexhibit

Iattendedanall-girlshighschool,inBethesda,Maryland.Ipracticallylivedin theartroomwhereIhadeasyaccesstomanyartmaterials.Iusedcutpaperandwasable tolivenuptheschool’sdullhallwayswithboldcutpaperdisplaysonreligiousthemes tackedontothebulletinboards.In1959,IenteredCatholicUniversitywithamajorinart. Isoonleftahectichomeandmovedtoanapartmentnearschool.Myparentsdidn’t supportmeorcontributetomytuition,butIwasabletoworkindrugstoresandon campustoearnenoughmoneytosurvive. Itwasn’teasy.Iwasworkingfull-timeand goingtoschoolfull-timeoftenwithearlymorningclasses,butmyenthusiasmforart, literature,drama,poetry,andeventherequiredphilosophycoursesgavemeenergy. WhenIstartedthehands-onstudioclasses,Iwasinmytrueelement,intoxicatedbythe colorsaswellasthesmellofturpentine.IpaintedallIcouldandevenfiguredoutaway tosneakintotheartbuildingtopaintpastmidnight. Eachpaintingprovidedmewith seedstoinspirethenextpainting.IstudiedwithWashingtonColoristKennethNolandfor twoyears,butIknewthatIhadalreadydevelopedmyuniqueloveofcolor.Ialsostudied withNellSonnemanforpainting,ClaireFontaniniforsculptureandAlexGiampietrofor ceramics.Ofcourse,myothergreatteachersweremyclassmates,whichincludedMartin Puryear,FordStone,DavidRaymondandLorettaCampione.Iconsiderthelessonswe learnedfromeachothertobeenrichingandinvaluable.Igraduatedin1963withaBA, andthenwentontogetanMFAin1965. IwasluckytogetaWoodrowWilson Fellowshipforfreetuitioningraduateschool.Ifirstexhibitedin1964aspartofagroup showattheAdams-MorganGalleryinWashington,DC.Ialsoparticipatedinmany studentshowsandajuriedshowattheSmithsonian.

BackinBoston,Icontinuedavigorouspaceofraisingtwins,teaching,exhibiting anddoingart.Iperfectedmyprintmakingskillsandwrotethebook Silk Screening, publishedbyPrentice-Hallin1977.In1978Iwascommissionedtocreateaporcelain enamelfriezeforanewschoolinBoston.Thisworkhastwohundredlargepanelsand featuresimagesfromchildren’sartwork.Icontinuedtoproducemanyeditionsof serigraphs(silkscreenprints.) IalsobecameactiveintheBostonVisualArtistsUnion andworkedwithmanyotherartiststodevelopexhibitopportunitiesandsecureourrights asartists.Theunionwasthefocusofmylifeforthenextsixyears.Iheldvariousoffices, waseditorofournewsletterandbecameSecretaryGeneral. IparticipatedinmanyUnion shows,localgroupshows,andone-personshows.Around1980,Ibegantomake collages,largeboldweavings,andappliquepiecesfromclothesIfoundinthetrash. TeachingwasespeciallyimportanttomebecauseIlearnedsomuchfrommystudents andtheiruniqueresponsestothevisualexercisesIsuggested.

In1972,ImovedtoItalyforayearwithmytwinsandlivedinatinyvillage calledVicovaro.Inthispeacefulruralarea,Iproducedmanyoilsketchesaswellas editionsofserigraphs,artinspiredbytherichvistasofendlessmountains,theTiber River,neatlyplowedfields,andancienttwistingolivetrees.Ihadone-personshowsat theAmericanCulturalCenterinRomeandagalleryinTrastevere.MychildrenandI backpackedthroughmanyothercountries,includingIsraelandMorocco.Thistrip openedmyeyestolandscapesandculturesinexcitingnewways.

In1990,Imovedtoanoldone-roomschoolhouseintheWhiteMountainNational ForestinWesternMaine.HereIfoundaperfectenvironment,richwiththedramaof natureandcreativesolitude. FortwoyearsIdidn’thaveadayjobandhadtimeto intenselyexplorenewdirectionsinmyart:drawingandwatercolor,usingshadowand

Aftermytroubledrelationshipwiththefatherofmychildrenendedin1970,I movedtoalargerapartmentwithmychildrenwhereIhadabiggerstudiospace.Ipicked upmoreteachingjobsandproducedoriginalprintsatafuriouspace,alwaysinspiredby theprocessandthecolors.Ireceivednochildsupportanditwasarealchallengeto surviveandsupportmychildrenandstilldothatwhichwasmostimportanttome: creatingart. In1971,Ihadmyfirstone-personshowattheOfftheSquareGalleryin Cambridge,Massachusetts.IalsopaintedtwomuralsforBoston’sSummerthingpublic artprogram.Ilikedhavingmyartlarge,almostthreestorieshigh.

AsIbecameawareofartists’rightsfrommanyUniondiscussions,Ibegantosee thelargerpictureofhumanrightsandtheneedforsocialandeconomicjustice.Mytwins graduatedfromhighschoolin1985,andIwasfinallynotresponsibleforthemonadaily basis.ItooktotheroadanddrovefromBostontoNicaraguainaVWbus.Thisyear-long tripwasarevelationofthepoverty,endurance,andkindnessofthepeopleinCentral America.InNicaragua,myartbecameserioussweatycarpentryasIworkedasa long-termHabitatforHumanityvolunteerwithlocalfamiliesaswebuiltsturdyhouses.I wasgladtohelppoorpeoplewithmylabor WhenIreturnedtoBoston,Iworkedasa volunteercoordinatorandconstructionsupervisorwithHabitatinBoston.Icontinued doingmyownartandexhibiting,andgainedadeeperappreciationofnaturefrom backpackingtripstoMainefollowingthedeeplyforestedAppalachianTrail.

IlivedinMaineforfouryearsandthenrespondedtoaneedtostretchbyjoining thePeaceCorpsin1995. Boliviadelightedmewithitscolorfulpeople,indigenous culturesandstirringmusicechoingtheAndeanwind.IworkedwiththeTangaTanga Children’sMuseuminSucrewhereItaughtartandcoordinatedprojectsaboutprehistoric rockart,craftsanddifferentaspectsofBolivianlife.Iwasblessedtolearnsomuch. Workingatthemuseumwasaperfectplaceformetousemyskillsasanartist. Whilein thePeaceCorps,Imademanysketchesofthecountrysideanditsdramaticmountains, workinginwatercolor,pastelandcoloredpencil.

CurrentlyIlivewellwithsimpleabundanceasIpaint,write,singandworkfor thingsIbelieveareimportant.Myconscienceforsocialjusticemotivatesmeto continuallyadvocateforabetterworldasawriterandpublicspeaker. I’vevolunteered withBoston’sEcclesiaMinistriesinpastoralcareatanursinghomeandalsoatCommon CathedralandCommonArt,adynamiccommunityinwhichhomelesspeopleareableto exploretheircreativitythroughthevisualarts.

Theprocessofmakingartisalwaysanexcitingadventurefullofsurprises. Inspirationismyconstantcompanion.Ibelieveart,whetheritispainting,wordsormusic isimportantinallourlives.Artgivesusmuchneededbeautyandmeaningandcan motivateustoworkforgoodthings,likepeaceandjustice.

WhenIreturnedtotheBostonareain1997,Iwasstunnedatthehighrateof inflation.IgotsteadyworkintheBostonPublicSchoolsasasubstituteteacherand continuedpaintinginacrylicsandoilsaswellaswatercolors.IsoldsomearttoHarvard’s FoggMuseumandtheBostonPublicLibrary WiththehelpoftheArtConnectionin BostonandRhodeIsland,Ihavedonatedaboutfivehundredserigraphsandwatercolors tomanynon-profits,whoframetheworkandinstallitintheirofficeswheretheirclients canenjoyit.WhileIdon’tgetpaidfortheseworks,Idogetagreatsenseofsatisfaction fromknowingmyartiswhereitcanbe seenandappreciatedandthatitcancheerup peoplewhoareoftenatatroubledtimeintheirlives.Musicisalsoabigpartofmylife.I amasopranoandplayguitarandpianoandperformasmuchaspossible.

Ihavebeenenthralledbytherichcolorsachievedincreatingmanyoriginal,limited edition,serigraphs,alsoknownassilkscreenprints.Theprocessofserigraphyinvolves makingstencilsforeachcolor,veryprecisealigningofthecolorswhichareusually printedseparatelyandcloseattentiontothemanydetailswhichenhancethecreative image. Thestencilsaremadeofglueorpaperandaredestroyedafterprintingwhich makestheseprintsatrulylimitededition.Thespecialinksusedintheserigraphyprocess arethicklyappliedastheyarepushedthroughthestenciltothepaperbelowwitharubber squeegeeguidedbytheskilledhandsoftheartist. Asaresulttheseserigraphshaverich layersofvibrantcolor.Ihavetaughtserigraphyandamtheauthorofthebook, Silk-Screening. Multiple copies are available for these limited edition prints.
