About Lewanda Lim Lewanda Lim is a Filipino-American artist, poet, and jewelry maker whose multifaceted artworks are reflective of her immigrant background. Her artistic approach varies from realism to whimsical abstractions. She works with multiple materials such as paints (oils, acrylics, watercolor), pastels, printing materials, fiber/fabrics, jewelry, clay, food, and words. Her latest works are fabric collage projects that are mixed media. Lewanda has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (Art Education) from the University of the Philippines and a Master of Art degree (Studio Art) from the State University of New York (Albany). After graduating with a BFA, she briefly taught art history and art education at the University of the Philippines for several years. While at SUNY Albany, her work developed to focus more on environmental issues. She has participated in several one-person and group shows in MA, NY, PA, OH, and Metro Manila. Her website is http://www.lewandalim.com.

Artist Statement Today, the existential issues of environmental damage, justice, and peace are burning in the minds of many people. The catastrophic results of these problems are real, alarming, and in need of urgent attention and solutions. As artists, we are duty-bound to do our part in this greatest of challenges. Clearly, global warming has brought disasters to the environment: rising temperatures, sea level rise, destruction of ecosystems, severe weather, and others. The growing economic inequality in our society bodes more suffering and unrest. Conflicts over race, territory, ideology, and economic power are the bane of civilizations. Yet, to stay unconcerned is a cowardly option, I think. In my fiber art, I try to convey the stark conditions we are facing through my unique artistic techniques and language. I manipulate my materials with scissors and a sewing machine. Countless stitching, compositional daring, and control bring elements together in unified and aesthetically satisfying results.
