Asanenvironmentallawyer,writerandartist,Iamdrawntoexploringandexpressingthemultiplicityof interconnectedfacetsofman-madeclimatechangeandtheirimpactsonouroceans,earth,weatherand atmosphere,plantsandanimals,people,andthefutureofourworld.“BarteringtheWorld”isanassemblage drawnfromacollectionofarticlesrecoveredaftersevere oodsorwasheduponthebeachduringextraordinary weatherevents. GREENHOUSEGASCARBONDIOXIDE(CO2):AccordingtotheUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgency, carbondioxide(CO2)istheprimarygreenhousegasemittedthroughhumanactivities Themainhuman activitythatemitsCO2isthecombustionoffossilfuels(coal,naturalgas,andoil)forenergyand transportation.
QUAHOG:Thecurrentevolutionofsomespeciescallsourattentiontoclimatechange. “Clamshells,like trees,haveringsthatmarkthepassageoftime. Thesizeandshapeofthoseringsalsoo eraroadmapofclimate conditionsduringthosepassingyears. Onenewstudyofshellrings,forinstance,suggeststhathumanshave reversedthewaytheoceanandtheatmospherenaturallyinteract”(KellyKasulis,TheBostonGlobe,January 15,2017)
THERIGHTWHALE:TheNorthAtlanticRightWhaleisoneofthemostendangeredmarinespecies,with under400remainingofwhich100arebreedingfemales Threefactorscontributetothedecline:climate change,vesselstrikesandentanglementsin shinggear. Climatechangedrivesthedeclinebecausethewhales havefollowedtheirfoodsourceintoareaswhicharefrequentedbycommercialvessels.
PIPINGPLOVER:Thecurrentendangermentofsomespeciescallsourattentiontoclimatechange. The breedinghabitatofthepipingplover,whichiswithinsixteenfeetoftheNorthAtlanticcoastline,hasbeen a ectedbychangesinwaterlevelsduetooceanwarmingandshorelinedevelopment
