Thesedays,mostofusprobablyhavealreadyheardtheterm“climatechange”amilliontimes weare allwellawareofwhatitmeansandwhatthingsshouldbedonetosavetheenvironment butwhat about“climateequity”?

Environmentalequitymeansbothprotectionfromenvironmentalhazardsaswellasaccessto environmentalbenetsforall,regardlessofincome,race,andothercharacteristics.Climatechangehas aectedthepoorestpopulationaroundtheworldmostdrastically,creating“climaterefugees”

AccordingtoMercyCorps“nearly70%ofallnewdisplacementsintherstsixmonthsoflastyear weretheresultofweather-relateddisasters,withatotalof9.8millionpeoplearoundtheworlddriven fromtheirhomesbyshockslikedrought,hurricanes,andlandslides around50,000peopleevery day”,and“ifsealevelscontinuetorisewithoutintervention,manyofthoselivingneartheocean about40percentoftheworld’spopulation willbeatriskoflosingtheirhomes”.

Thegoodnewsisthatmanypeopleareactivelyseekingasolution.Forinstance,theEquityFundis investingintheleadershipinBlack,Latinx,AAPI,andindigenouscommunitiesbearingthebruntof climatechange.Byengagingvotersinthesecommunities,theyaregettingclimateandcleanenergy policysolutionsthatreectcommunities'prioritiesandadvancingracial,economic,and environmentaljustice

HereatUVA,wealsowanttodoourparts.In“ClimateEquity:ABetterFutureForAll, " weare aiming toaddressthelong-ignoredissueofclimateequity,andletmorepeopleknowthatnot everyoneisprovidedtheresourcesto“gogreen”.Wewantouraudiencetoknowthatthe environmentalcrisisisnotonlyaboutsustainability,butalsoresourcesandpower Theparticipating artistsarelendingtheir voicestotheunheardtotellthestorythathasbeenlingeringoutsidethe public’ssight.

Asanenvironmentallawyer,writerandartist,Iamdrawntoexploringandexpressingthemultiplicityof interconnectedfacetsofman-madeclimatechangeandtheirimpactsonouroceans,earth,weatherand atmosphere,plantsandanimals,people,andthefutureofourworld.“BarteringtheWorld”isanassemblage drawnfromacollectionofarticlesrecoveredaftersevereoodsorwasheduponthebeachduringextraordinary weatherevents. Thearticlesselectedforthispiece,including,amongotherthings:oldphotographs,achild’s shoe,abrokenbirthdaycandle,abuttery’swing,piecesofaconstructionequipmenttoy,andarailroadtienail signifythebreadthofpeopleandcircumstanceswhohaveorwillsuerincalculablelossasaresultof human-inducedclimatechange Thispieceisdesignedtobeusedbychildrenandadultstoimaginethehistorical andfuturelivesandstoriesofindividualpeoplewhohavebeenorwillbedisplacedorsignicantlyaectedby climatechange.Together,storiesandartifactscanhelpto “makereal”asubjectthatcanseemtoolargeand abstracttoengageongoing,embodied concern.

GREENHOUSEGASCARBONDIOXIDE(CO2):AccordingtotheUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgency, carbondioxide(CO2)istheprimarygreenhousegasemittedthroughhumanactivities Themainhuman activitythatemitsCO2isthecombustionoffossilfuels(coal,naturalgas,andoil)forenergyand transportation.

QUAHOG:Thecurrentevolutionofsomespeciescallsourattentiontoclimatechange. “Clamshells,like trees,haveringsthatmarkthepassageoftime. Thesizeandshapeofthoseringsalsooeraroadmapofclimate conditionsduringthosepassingyears. Onenewstudyofshellrings,forinstance,suggeststhathumanshave reversedthewaytheoceanandtheatmospherenaturallyinteract”(KellyKasulis,TheBostonGlobe,January 15,2017)

THERIGHTWHALE:TheNorthAtlanticRightWhaleisoneofthemostendangeredmarinespecies,with under400remainingofwhich100arebreedingfemales Threefactorscontributetothedecline:climate change,vesselstrikesandentanglementsinshinggear. Climatechangedrivesthedeclinebecausethewhales havefollowedtheirfoodsourceintoareaswhicharefrequentedbycommercialvessels.

PIPINGPLOVER:Thecurrentendangermentofsomespeciescallsourattentiontoclimatechange. The breedinghabitatofthepipingplover,whichiswithinsixteenfeetoftheNorthAtlanticcoastline,hasbeen aectedbychangesinwaterlevelsduetooceanwarmingandshorelinedevelopment

LatelyIhavebeenobsessedwithOldMasterpaintings,soI’llstartonapaintingwiththeintentionofemulating HolbeinorVermeer,butthenIgetdissatisedwiththeoveralleect “thislookslikebadhotelart!” andstart addingthree-dimensionalitemstothesurface Mosaictechniquessatisfymycompulsiontoalwaysbebusy I trytopickactivitiesthatarefun,restfulorrefreshing,andthatalsosatisfymyneedtoalwaysbeproductive I’m sureitcomesfrommydriven,expectation-ladenupbringing BeingKorean,myparentswantedmetobea Nobel-Prize-winningdoctor IgraduatedfromHarvard,whereImajoredinstudioart,soI’vealwaysfelt sheepishthatIwasn’tsomesuccessfulsuperstar.I’llneverliveuptotheirexpectations,soI’mcompensatingby creatingasfastasIcan.

Therearemanylayerstoalltheproblemswefaceregardingclimatechange. Howwetendtoourselves,ourbodiesandminds,andthoseofour neighbors,reectsinhowwetendtheEarth.Thisiswhywemustreturnthe landsweliveontotheiroriginalstewards-Indigenouscommunities worldwide
