Droga con valor de $18 millones de dólares decomisada en la frontera México-Estados Unidos REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ

REYNOSA – Agentes de la Aduana y Protección Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos (CBP por sus siglas en inglés) decomisaron distintos tipos de droga con un valor en el mercado de casi 18 millones de dólares durante el periodo vacacional de Semana Santa.

Estas drogas fueron decomisadas en ocho cruces fronterizos entre Brownsville y Del Río Texas. El vocero de CBP, Phillip Barrera, dijo que en los últimos 10 días de marzo oficiales de esta agencia habían asegurado dos toneladas 715 kilogramos de marihuana, 34 kilos de cocaína, 74 kilos de metanfetamina y poco más de 32 kilos

de heroína, drogas que en el mercado negro tienen un valor de 17.8 millones de dólares. Además, dijo que durante este mismo periodo se había logrado la detención de 42 personas que estaban prófugas de la ley y 938 personas habían sido arrestadas por violar las leyes estadounidenses de inmigración. Barrera dijo que este periodo vacacional ha-

bía aumentado en cuatro por ciento el número de permisos para entrar a los Estados Unidos, en comparación con el año pasado. Por último mencionó que aunque ha habido ajustes en el presupuesto de los Estados Unidos, estos no han afectado a los agentes apostados en los puntos de entrada y salida de los Estados Unidos.

Drugs worth $18 million seized at the border UNA VOZ STAFF REYNOSA – U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents seized several kinds of narcotics valued at almost $18 million during the Holy Week vacation period. These drugs were seized at eight

international border crossing points between Brownsville and Del Rio in Texas. CBP spokesman, Phillip Barrera, said that in the last 10 days of March CBP officers had secured two tons 715 kilos of marijuana, 34 kilos of cocaine, 74 kilos of methamphetamines and a little over 32 kilos of heroin. These drugs

have a street value of $17.8 million. Also, he said that during this same period 42 fugitives had been detained and 938 people had been arrested for violating U.S. immigration laws. Barrera said that during this vacation period the number of permits issued to foreign visitors

to enter the United States had increased by four percent in comparison with last year’s numbers. Last, he also said that even though there had been some adjustments in the U.S. government budget, these adjustments had not affected the agents assigned to work at the U.S. points of entry and departure.

Hombre de DeKalb se declara culpable de asesinar a estudiante de NIU REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ DEKALB – El hombre acusado de asesinar a una estudiante de primer año de la Universidad del Norte de Illinois se declaró culpable en corte, lo que suscitó la reacción de la familia de la víctima. DeKalb man pleads guilty to murder of NIU student

DEKALB – The man accused of murdering a freshman Northern Illinois University student pleaded guilty in court, prompting the reaction from the victim’s family. William Curl, 36, pleaded guilty in the death of Antinette “Toni” Keller on April 3 in exchange for a 37-year prison sentence, a deal that the victim’s family had criticized. In an unexpected twist, Curl pleaded guilty to one count of murder, but did not admit to being guilty of the crime, something known as an Alford Plea. In fact, Curl still says he is innocent of the accusations, but he pleaded guilty to avoid being sentenced to a longer jail term if he is found guilty at trial.

Curl was scheduled to stand trial for Keller’s murder next week. He was facing a 20 to 60year sentence if found guilty of the murder. Before he entered his plea, Curl’s sister yelled at him in court, asking him not to take the plea because he was being railroaded. She was taken out of the courtroom. Meanwhile the victim’s family was not present at the hearing. According to the family spokesman, Mary Tarling, a cousin of the victim, they had not been notified that April 3rd was the definite date for Curl to enter a plea. Through the spokeswoman the family expressed their disagreement with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s office for agreeing to this plea.

Kane County judge’s presentation to focus on student safety UNA VOZ STAFF ST. CHARLES – Kane County Judgers will be making several presentations in county schools about ‘7 Reasons to Leave the Party’, to coincide with prom and graduation season. The program focuses on the choices students face in social settings, and how the wrong choices could adversely alter their lives. Students are taken virtually through seven rooms at a house party. In each room they encounter a situation that could present

consequences, such as alcohol, drugs or social media. Students are challenged to think about how they might respond, and presented with potential consequences for poor choices. Each of the seven virtual rooms represents one of the seven reasons to simply leave the party. The program will be presented on April 12 to all students at St. Edward High School in Elgin, on April 29 to juniors and seniors at St. Charles East High School, on May 6 to juniors and seniors at Elgin Larkin High School.

Tarling said the family had been in court April 2, but they were told there were no details yet about a possible plea deal with Curl. When the family arrived at their Plainfield home a message was waiting for them with details of the plea agreement. “It was very, ‘By the way, this is happening,’ and it was very short notice,” Tarling said of the notification, and the family could not make it to DeKalb. Antinette’s father, Roger Keller, declined to make a comment on the issue when reached at his Plainfield home after the plea agreement was announced. Meanwhile Tarling said the family probably knows that there is no sentence long enough to ease their pain. However, knowing that there

is the possibility that Curl some day would walk free is something that didn’t sit well. “It’s just the concept that he could be released. When people say it’s going to be 37 years until he’s released, the only thing I hear is ‘until he’s released,’” she said. Meanwhile, the DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard H. Schmack issued a statement, saying this murder case was “extremely complex” and said that Curl will have to serve 100 percent of his sentence. Keller, 18, disappeared on Oct. 14, 2010, after she told her friends se was going to Prairie Park near the college campus. The burned remains of a woman were found a couple of days later, but it took authorities several months to confirm the remains were hers.

Can I get my green card through my job? By DAVID RICHMOND

My employer wants to help me obtain my papers. How does that work? P.P. In order for an alien to obtain immigration status, as a temporary worker in the United States or a permanent resident in the United States, they have to have a sponsor. Sponsors can be either employers or certain family members. If your employer wants to sponsor you to obtain temporary work authorization in the United States or a green card, certain requirements must be fulfilled. The first requirement is that if you are in the United States, you must have lawful

immigration status. You cannot be here with an expired visitor visa or in the United States if you entered without inspection. Under those circumstances, your will have to leave the United States for 10 years and then your employer could file paperwork and petition for you to reenter the United States, that’s assuming you have been in the United States for one year without legal authorization. If you are in the United States as a student or temporary visitor in legal status or lawful status, an employer could petition for you to either temporarily or permanently emigrate to the United States. Depending on what type of job the employer is offering you would make a determination of what type of paperwork

you will file. If you are in the United States before Dec. 20, 2000 and your employer filed a petition on your behalf before April 30, 2001, when a visa becomes available in the future, you will be able to pay a $1,000 fine, it’s the provision of the law 245(i) that allows aliens who are in the United States illegally to just adjust their status based on that provision of the law. But those two requirements of being here and having those petitions filed by those dates are required. Therefore, if you are in the United States currently without legal authorization your employer cannot file a petition on your behalf to receive an immigration benefit.

Hombre herido a tiros en Aurora REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ AURORA – La policía de Aurora está investigando un tiroteo que sucedió poco antes de las 5 p.m .del 2 de abril, en la cuadra 300 de Cedar Street, resultando herido un hombre de 24 años de edad. La policía respondió luego de recibir una llamada a las 4:51 p.m., con reporte de disparos. Poco después un hospital de la ciudad llamó a la policía para reportar que una víctima de 24 años de edad había llegado a sus instalaciones con heridas de bala. De acuerdo a la policía, estas heridas no ponen en riesgo su vida. La investigación inicial de la policía reveló que hubo una discusión entre cundo menos dos hombres dentro de una camioneta azul tipo SUV, y dos hombres que estaban a pie. Aparentemente uno de los hombres a pie realizó un número no determinado de disparos, de acuerdo con la policía. Uno de los disparos hizo blanco en la víctima, que estaba dentro de la camioneta y resultó he-

rida en el hombro. De acuerdo a la policía los hombres que estaban a pie, descritos como hombres de raza negra, corrieron en dirección norte por los patios de las casas en la calle Cedar. Suicidal woman found safe UNA VOZ STAFF

AURORA – Aurora Police said that a 32-year-old woman who had been reported missing and with suicidal tendencies had been found and is safe. Paulina F. Massier, of the 1200 block of Paddock Court, was reported to authorities at about 12:30 a.m. March 30, when an unknown person called 9111 to report Massier was posting messages on social media threatening to harm herself. When police arrived at Massier’s house, they found friend of hers, who said she had received a text message that also indicated she was going to harm herself.

According to authorities, for the next six hours Massier continued to intermittently post messages on her social media account and send texts to at least two people. She stopped all contact with anyone at about 6:20 a.m. March 30. Massier was last seen at about 9:30 p.m. March 29, on Route 64 in Wasco. She was driving a 2008 Red Chevrolet Impala, 4-door. At one point her cell phone was traced to Forrest, Illinois in Livingston County, but authorities were not able to find her. However, police reported that the woman had been located at about 8:40 p.m. April 1 and was safe.

Man shot and injured in Aurora UNA VOZ STAFF

AURORA – Aurora Police are investigating a shooting that took place shortly before 5 p.m. April 2, in the 300 block of Cedar Street. A 24-yearold man was injured in the shooting. Police responded after receiving a call of shots fired at 4:51 p.m. Shortly after that a local Aurora hospital called authorities to report that a victim had arrived at their facilities with a gunshot wound. According to police, the man’s injuries are not life-threatening. Police said an initial investigation revealed that an altercation took place between two men who were inside a blue SUV and two men who were on foot. Apparently one of the men on foot made an undetermined amount of shots, according to police. One of the shots hit the victim inside the SUV in the shoulder. According to police, the men on foot, described as black males, ran northbound through the yards on Cedar Street, while the SUV continued westbound on Cedar Street. Police is questioning a man who was in the SUV that dropped the victim off at a local hospital. The two men on foot have not been located. Police said apparently nobody else was injured. No motive has been established for this shooting, but authorities believe this was not a random shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact Aurora police investigators at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 8921000. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to any arrests.

Complaint line to be open for April 9 consolidated election UNA VOZ STAFF ST. CHARLES – Kane County voters who observe or experience voting problems or irregularities during next week’s consolidated election should call the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office to report the problems. The Election Complaint Line will be available from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 9. Anyone who experiences or witnesses any possible illegal election activity, such as electioneering, illegally placed campaign signs or denial of voting rights at any of the county’s 228 voting precincts should call the hotline at (630) 208-5328. The hotline will be staffed by Kane County State’s Attorney’s personnel. Assistant State’s Attorney’s will take the complaints about potential violations to Illinois Election Law and are prepared to go to the voting centers to make sure there is compliance with state election laws. “Because so many municipal positions are contested, we expect this will be a very active election. Our office will b ready to assist election judges and the voters to ensure polling places are run fairly and are free of political activity,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said. Voters are reminded that the hotline is not for election questions, such as polling times and places. Voters who need election information should call the Kane County Clerk’s Election Help Line at (630) 232-5990. Eligible voters must be registered, must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age.

UNA VOZ STAFF ELGIN – Elgin Police are investigating a shooting that took place the afternoon of April 2 in an apartment complex near Elgin Community College and the Elgin Sports Complex. According to authorities, no injuries were reported; however, the bus routes for several U-46 school district buses were interrupted for a while. Elgin Police Lt. Dan O’Shea said that several people called 911 to report the shots at about 1:45 p.m. at Buena Vista Apartments, located south of McLean Boulevard, in the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, on the city’s west side. O’Shea said police officers had secured the area and blocked traffic while they were conducting investigations. School buses that provide service in the area were notified and the service was interrupted until the area was considered secure. Authorities also used the armored tactical team vehicle from the police department. “Investigators from the gang unit and major investigations division responded to the scene and conducted interviews with witnesses and residents,” O’Shea said. Authorities said nobody was hurt by the shots fired. Police said the shots apparently came out of one of the buildings, maybe targeting someone outside. The first officers at the scene were told to look for a particular vehicle seen leaving the area. In the last few days there have been several gun-related incidents in Elgin. On March 26 Alexis Huerta, 19, was gunned down at the Silver Court Apartments on the city’s northwest side. He was identified as a gang member. That same day, a couple of hours later, someone fired multiple shots at a home located in the 600 block of Jay Street on the city’s southeast side. In this incident a 19-year-old gang member who lives there was arrested the following day and charged with possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Police is asking people with information about the Buena Vista incident to call the gang investigation division at (847) 289-2646. People also can leave anonymous tips or information in the crime line at (847) 695-4195 or by sending a text to 847411 and including ELGINPD in the beginning of the text, followed by the message and tip information.

Gang member in jail after rivals shoot his house UNA VOZ STAFF ELGIN – A 19-year-old Elgin gang member who is on probation was arrested by authorities after his house was sprayed with bullets. He was arrested because he was found in possession of four rounds of ammunition. According to authorities, Manuel A. Jasso, of the 600 block of Jay Street, was charged with one count of illegal possession of ammunition by a felon, a felony, and one count of possession of ammunition without a firearm owner’s ID card, a misdemeanor. Police said gang unit officers and probation officers from Kane County’s Cooperative Agencies Specialized Treatment (CAST) program decided to conduct a search of Jasso’s home after his house was sprayed with bullets at about 11:30 p.m. March 26. Nobody was injured. The day after the shots were made gang officers and probation officers conducted a search at the home and discovered four rounds of .38-caliber ammunition, something Jasso cannot have because he is a convicted felon. Elgin Police Lt. Dan O’Shea said Jasso is a known gang member and is on probation as part of the CAST program. This is a program that closely monitors adults and juveniles identified as high-risk violent gang offenders. This shooting took place two hours after a 19-year-old man was gunned down at an apartment complex on the city’s west side. Police doesn’t know if both incidents are linked. According to court records, Jasso pleaded guilty last December of manufacturing or delivering 30 to 500 grams of marijuana. He was sentenced to 180 days in the county jail, but he had already served most of this time in jail, besides 24 months on probation. Robert C. Garcia, 30, of Glendale Heights, was charged with felony aggravated battery to a police officer and a misdemeanor charge of resisting a police officer, following an incident on April 1. Garcia was accused of punching a police officer in the mouth and cheek during his arrest. His bail was set at $75,000 and was given an April 17 court date.

Aurora considera doble sentido en circulación por calle Nueva York REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ AURORA – Luego de que la ciudad convirtiera de forma exitosa las calles Downer y Benton de un solo sentido a dos sentidos, otra de las calles de la ciudad pudiera seguir este mismo cambio. La ciudad todavía se encuentra en las primeras etapas de la planificación para convertir un tramo de una milla de largo de la calle East New York Street, entre Smith Street y Broadway, a una calle de doble sentido. Con este nuevo plan, la calle East Galena Boulevard continuaría siendo de un solo sentido. El tramo de New York Street que va de Broadway hasta Oak Avenue al oeste continuará siendo de un solo sentido. Este plan todavía se encuentra en la etapa inicial y una propuesta de diseño inicial será sometida ante el Comité de Finanzas en las próximas semanas para su consideración. Aurora considers changing New York to a two-way street UNA VOZ STAFF AURORA – After the city successfully converted Benton and Downer streets from one-way to two-way streets, another important city street could be next. The city is still in the early planning stages to switch one-mile stretch of East New York, between Smith and Broadway, to a twoway street. The portion of New York between Broadway and Oak Avenue, on the city’s west side, will remain a one-way street. If this change is approved, Galena Boulevard will remain as a one way street. The plan is still in the early stages and one proposal for an early design will be submitted to the Finance Committee in the next few weeks. However, everything seems to indicate that the change will be approved, given the successful conversion of Downer Place and Benton Street in 2012. According to the city director of communications, the conversion of Downer and Benton streets was wellreceived by city businesses and had a positive impact on traffic flow.

Now part of the reason that a new traffic flow for New York Street is being considered is the success of the Paramount Theater series. With this success there is a need for a new traffic pattern. Also, with the upcoming opening of RiverEdge Park, traffic flow coming from the east has to be considered. If the initial design is approved by city council this spring, the conversion could be finished by the end of the year, but timing also depends on the weather. The city director of communications said the plan to change New York Street to a two-way street has been under consideration since 2006. Funding for street design for the conversion to a two-way street was approved for the 2012 budget, but with the Downer Place bridge reconstruction and the conversion of Downer Place and Benton Street, the New York street project was postponed until this year and the fund were reallocated to 2013. Once the design work is completed, the city will focus on getting feedback from New York Street businesses along the stretch that will be affected by the change.

Policía investiga atentado contra pareja en Rockford REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ ROCKFORD – La policía se encuentra investigando un incidente en el que una pareja de Rockford resultó herida en un doble tiroteo. En este caso la policía ha descrito el incidente como una agresión agravada con un arma de fuego. Sin embargo, una de las víctimas lo describe como un intento de homicidio. De acuerdo a las autoridades, 24 balas fueron disparadas por la ventana de la recámara de la casa en la que vivía una pareja. El incidente se registró a las 4 de la mañana del 24 de marzo en una casa de 16th Avenue. En el atentado un hombre, Mark Birmingham, recibió tres impactos de bala, mientras que su esposa, Tammy, solo fue alcanzada por una de las balas. Las balas que no los alcanzaron a ellos perforaron las paredes, alojándose en muebles y dañando la estructura de la vivienda. De acuerdo a la policía, ambas víctimas ya salieron del hospital, Mark se encuentra en su casa mientras que

Police investigates couple’s shooting in Rockford UNA VOZ STAFF

ROCKFORD – Police are investigating an incident in which a Rockford couple was injured in a double shooting. In this case police have described the incident as an aggravated battery with a firearm. However, one of the victims has described it as a homicide attempt. According to authorities, 24 bullets were shot through the bedroom window of the home the couple was living in. The incident took place at 4 a.m. March 24 at a home on 16th Avenue. In the shooting a man, Mark Birmingham, received three bullet wounds, while his wife, Tammy, was hit once. The bullets that did not injure them pierced the walls, hit furniture and damaged the structure. According to police both victims are out of the hospital, Mark is at home while his wife was released to

a rehabilitation center. Both underwent several surgeries as a consequence of this attack. Authorities said nobody has been arrested and they don’t have a motive for the shooting. “This one bothers me,” Lt. Marc Welsh said. “I believe you have innocent victims here.” What is upsetting authorities too is the lack of community outcry and lack of tips to solve this incident. “We do have a couple of tips we’re following up on, but it’s not a lot there,” Welsh said. The couple and one of their adult children were renting the home, but since the incident they have moved out. “Anyone who has information, even the smallest piece of information may be the piece to solve the puzzle,” Welsh said. Cierran carril de Interestatal 90 cerca de Rockford por construcción REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ ROCKFORD – Un carril en dirección oeste de la autopista Interestatal 90 estará cerrado hasta finales de 2013, por construcción, dijeron autoridades estatales. ROCKFORD – A westbound lane on Interstate 90 will be closed through the end of 2013 due to construction, according to state authorities. Authorities said drives headed west toward Rockford using Interstate 90 will find one lane open between Irene Road and Route I-39, from April 4 through the end of the 2013 construction season. The Illinois Tollway Authority is rebuilding and widening the bridge over the Kishwaukee River and needs to close one lane to establish a construction work zone. An alternate route has been set up on U.S. 20. Heading east traffic will continue with two lanes of traffic. This is part of the Interstate 90 rebuilding project from Rockford to O’Hare. This project is expected to take four years.
