Tiroteo en Santa Mónica deja 5 muertos REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ SANTA MÓNICA, CALIFORNIA – Un hombre solitario desencadenó el pánico en esta ciudad del sur de California, cuando atacó a dos miembros de su familia, secuestró un vehículo y atacó a varias personas más en una universidad local antes de ser ultimado por las autoridades. Los hechos sucedieron el 7 de junio, un día antes de que el pistolero cumpliera 24 años. Todo comenzó en la casa del padre del pistolero John Zawahri. Ahí Zawahri dio muerte a su padre Samir y a su hermano Chjris. Su madre se encontraba de viaje en el extranjero. De acuerdo a las autoridades, luego de asesinar a sus familiares, Zawahri incendió la vivienda. Testigos informaron que después de incendiar la vivienda, Zawahri abrió fuego contra una mujer que pasaba en su automóvil por el lugar, hiriéndola. Luego secuestró a otra mujer que conducía un auto, obligándola a llevarlo al campus de la Universidad de Santa Mónica. En el camino realizó disparos en contra
de un autobús del servicio público y varias personas en las calles. Dos de los pasajeros del autobús resultaron lesionados. Una vez en la universidad, Zawahri disparó contra una camioneta Ford Explorer, matando al conductor. El vehículo se estrelló contra un muro de ladrillo en el estacionamiento y la pasajera resultó gravemente herida. El chofer de la camioneta fue identificado como Carlos Navarro Franco, de 68 años de edad y empleado de la universidad. Su hija Marcela resultó gravemente herida y murió dos días después. Carlos no debía estar en la universidad trabajando ese día, pero había llevado a su hija Marcela de 26 años a comprar libros ya que estaba inscrita para comenzar a tomar clases ahí. Joe Orcutt, un empleado de la universidad y testigo del tiroteo, dijo que al escuchar disparos fue a ver lo que sucedía en el estacionamiento. Se dio cuenta de la camioneta estrellada contra el muro y comenzó a buscar a la persona armada cuando a poca distancia vio al hombre disparando contra personas como si fueran parte de
un ejercicio de tiro al blanco. “Estaba allí, como alguien que está modelando para una revista de armas de fuego”, dijo Orcutt. “No se veía presa de ninguna emoción. No sé si estaba muy concentrado o qué, pero estaba muy calmado”. Orcutt buscó refugio cuando una bala pasó cerca de donde él se encontraba. De acuerdo a testigos, Zawahri comenzó a recorrer la universidad, haciendo disparos al azar. Algunos alumnos brincaron por las ventanas de los salones, mientras que otros buscaron refugio en salones o escaparon usando las puertas de emergencia. Trena Johnson, empleada de la universidad, dijo haber visto cómo un hombre vestido de negro con un arma muy grande le disparaba a una mujer en la cabeza a la entrada de la biblioteca. De acuerdo a las autoridades el hombre disparó por lo menos 70 veces en la biblioteca. Un grupo de alumnos que logró entrar a un “aula segura” colocó artículos contra la puerta y los usaron como escudo cuando el pistolero disparó en contra del salón a través de los
muros. Nadie resultó herido en la biblioteca. Dos oficiales de policía de Santa Mónica y un guardia de seguridad de la universidad lo confrontaron y le dispararon varias veces. Zawahri murió en el lugar. De acuerdo a la jefa de policía de Santa Mónica, Jaqueline Seabrooks, el sospechoso fue estudiante de la Universidad de Santa Mónica. La jefa de policía, mostrando armas y municiones decomisadas en relación con este ataque, dijo que el cobarde asesino había planeado este ataque, ya que tenía la capacidad de disparar mil 300 proyectiles. “En cualquier momento que alguien se pone un chaleco, sale con una bolsa llena de cargadores, tiene piezas de repuesto para el arma, una pistola y un fusil semiautomático, roba vehículos a la fuerza, mata a varias personas y tiene que ser neutralizado por la policía, yo diría que eso es premeditado”, dijo Seabrooks. Las otras dos víctimas mortales fueron identificadas como Albert Vásquez, jefe de la policía de la universidad, y una mujer que recolectaba latas de aluminio para venderlas.
Las autoridades desconocen los motivos por los que Zawahri cometió este ataque, sin embargo, dicen que tenía problemas mentales. En 2006 la policía ya había tenido contacto con él, pero no se pudieron dar detalles porque en ese tiempo Zawahri era menor de edad. Santa Monica shooting leaves 5 people dead UNA VOZ STAFF
SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA – A man spread terror throughout this Southern California city when he attacked two relatives, carjacked a vehicle and attacked several people at a local college before being gunned down by authorities. The shootings took place June 7, a day before the gunman’s 24th birthday. Everything started at the home of the gunman’s father, John Zawahri. There Zawahri killed his father Samir and his brother Chjris. His mother was overseas. According to authorities, after killing his brother and father, Zawhari set the home on fire, and then shot a woman who was driving by injuring her. He then carjacked another woman, forcing her to drive to Santa Monica College. On the way he shot a public transportation bus and several people on the street. Two
of the bus passengers were injured. Once he arrived at the college, Zawahri made several shots against a Ford Explorer truck, killing the driver. The vehicle crashed against a brick wall on the parking lot and the woman on the passenger seat was severely injured. The driver was identified as Carlos Navarro Franco, 68, a college employee. His daughter Marcela was severely injured and died two days later. Carlos was not supposed to be working at the university that day, but he was there to take his 26-yearold daughter to purchase some books for classes she was going to take. Joe Orcutt, a college employee and shooting witness, said that when he heard shots he went to see what was going on. He noticed that the Explorer was against the brick wall and started looking for the shooter when he saw a man shooting several people, almost like a target practice. “He was there, like someone who
was modeling for a gun magazine,” Orcutt said. “He didn’t display any emotion. I don’t know if he was fully concentrated or what, but he was very calm.” Orcutt sought cover when a bullet went by near him. According to witnesses, Zawahri then walked throughout the college, shooting at random. Some students jumped out the windows, while others sought cover inside classrooms or used the emergency exits. Trena Johnson, a college employee, said she saw how a man dressed in black with a large weapon shot a woman in the head by the library entrance. According to authorities the man made at least 70 shots in the library. A group of students who entered a “safe room” barricaded the door and then protected themselves when the shooter shot them through the wall. Nobody was injured at the library. confronted the man and shot him several times. He died at the scene. According to Jacqueline Brooks, Santa Monica Chief of Police, the suspect was at one time student at the college. The police chief, displaying some weapons and ammunition seized in connection with this attack, said the coward murderer had planned this attack because he had the capability of shooting 1,300 rounds. “Any time someone puts on a vest, of some sort, comes out with a bag full of loaded magazines, has an extra receiver, has a handgun and has a semi-automatic rifle, carjacks folks, goes to a college, kills more people and has to be neutralized at the hands of the police, I would say that that’s premeditated,” she said. The other two victims were identified as Albert Vasquez, chief of the police university, and a woman who collected aluminum cans for a living. Authorities don’t know the reason being Zawahri’s attack; however, they
said he suffered from mental illness. In 2006 police had contact with him, but no details were given because he was a minor at the time. Sources close to the investigation say Zawahri suffered from mental problems and had been hospitalized after injuring someone. According to authorities, Samir Zawahri, 65, had moved his family to this neighborhood of small homes and apartment buildings in the mid 1990s. Shortly after they moved here, the Zawahri’s went through a difficult divorce and the son’s custody was split. One remained with the father and the other went to live with the mother. Some sources say the divorce is a factor in this attack. Zawahri’s mother is outside the country and is expected to return in a week. Meanwhile, it is not clear which one of the two sons was living with her: the gunman or the murder victim.
Seven bodies found in illegal graveyard in Baja California Sur UNA VOZ STAFF BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR – Seven bodies, among them the remains of a woman, were found in a clandestine gravesite in the state of Baja California Sur, which until now had been free of the high crime indices that are seen throughout the country. “It has been confirmed the discovery of … a total of seven people that were murdered and then buried,” on the back of a subdivision on the south side of La Paz, state capital of Baja California Sur, according to Isaias
Arias, vice director of Special Investigations in the state. The remains were found on June 11. Authorities have arrested a 20-year-old suspect, but believe there may be more human remains on site. They continue the investigation using ultrasound equipment. This discovery is the first of its kind in this state with lots of touristic activity. Meanwhile authorities in Naucalpan in Mexico State reported the discovery of two burned bodies in the area of Villa Alpina, early June 12.

Senado estadounidense propone nuevas leyes de inmigración son elegibles para ningún beneficio de ayuda pública federal. Este programa permitiría al secretario de Seguridad Nacional el recolectar una cuota de procesamiento de personas que se registran para obtener el estatus RPI. Una vez que una persona ha tenido el estatus RPI por 10 años puede convertirse en residente permanente. Para eso deben de haber mantenido una presencia física continua en los Estados Unidos, deben de haber pagado todos sus impuestos durante los últimos 10 años, deben de haber trabajado regularmente en los Estados Unidos y demostrar un conocimiento de civismo e inglés, esto es un requisito. También permitiría a personas que actualmente están en el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) obtener sus tarjetas de residencia permanente en cinco años en vez de ocho. Usted no será elegible para el programa si fue encontrado culpable de una felonía agravada, encontrado culpable de una felonía, encontrado culpable de tres crímenes menores o más, votó de forma ilegal, o es determinado no admisible por razones criminales, de seguridad nacional, de salud pública u otras razones morales. La legislación se encuentra en sus primeras etapas de debate y será debatida en el Senado y posteriormente en la Cámara de Representantes. Por DAVID RICHMOND Ocho senadores estadounidenses han anunciado una reforma migratoria radical, que permitiría el cambio de la mayoría de las leyes de inmigración actuales. Las nuevas leyes propuestas incluirían mayor seguridad en la frontera, un nuevo programa de legalización de inmigración, verificación obligatoria de elegibilidad para trabajar y nuevas visas de trabajo. El nuevo plan de seguridad fronteriza requiere que el secretario de Seguridad Nacional proporcione vigilancia persistente en sectores de alto riesgo en la frontera sur, y un índice de efectividad de 90 por ciento de detenciones para todos los sectores de alto riesgo en la frontera sur. También incluiría tres billones de dólares para implementar el nuevo plan de seguridad fronterizo. U.S. Senate proposes new immigration law would allow individuals who are in the United States prior to Dec. 31, 2011 and maintained continuous presence since then, to pay a $500 penalty and this would allow them to adjust their status to registered provisional immigrant status (RPI). Immigrants would have a period of one year, with the possibility of an extension by the secretary of Homeland Security for an additional year, to apply for the program. It would allow immigrants to work in the United States with a valid social security number and travel outside the United States. Immigrants in the RPI status are not eligible for any federal means- tested public benefit. It would allow the secretary of Homeland Security to collect a processing fee from individuals who register for RPI status. Once an individual is in RPI status for 10 years, they may become a lawful permanent resident, they must have maintained

Eight U.S. senators have announced sweeping immigration reform, which would overhaul most of our current immigration laws. The new proposed laws would include greater border security, a new immigration legalization program, employment verification that would be mandatory, and new employment work visas. The new border security plan would require the Department of Homeland Security secretary to provide persistent surveillance in high-risk sectors along the southern border, and an effective rate of 90 percent of apprehensions for all high-risk sectors along the southern border. It would include three billion dollars to implement the new border security plan. Under the new legalization program, it
continuous physical presence in the United States, they must have paid all their taxes owed during the last 10 years, they worked in the United States regularly and, demonstrated knowledge of civics and English, that would be a requirement. It also would allow people who are currently in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) to get their green cards (lawful permanent resident) in five years instead of eight. You will be ineligible for the program if you were convicted of an aggravated felony, convicted of a felony, convicted of three misdemeanors or more, unlawfully voted, or inadmissible for criminal, national security, public health or other morality grounds. Monterrey mayor hands the keys of the city to Jesus Christ
Alcaldesa de Monterrey entrega las llaves de la ciudad a Jesucristo REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ MONTERREY – La alcaldesa de Monterrey, Margarita Arellanes Cervantes, hizo entrega de las llaves de la ciudad a Jesucristo, causando con esto gran polémica. “Humildemente Dios que entre a esta ciudad y la haga su habitación, señor Jesucristo, bienvenido a Monterrey”, dijo Arellanes Cervantes en un evento multitudinario denominado “Monterrey Ora”, organizado por la Alianza de Pastores de la Ciudad de Monterrey. “Es por eso que hoy estamos aquí reunidos, y yo, Margarita Alicia Arellanes Cervantes, entrego la ciudad de Monterrey, Nuevo León a nuestro Señor Jesucristo para que su reino de paz y bendición sea establecido”, dijo. En este evento ella entregó simbólicamente las llaves de la ciudad a Jesucristo, diciendo “Abro las puertas de este municipio a Dios como la máxima autoridad, reconozco que sin su presencia y su ayuda no podemos tener éxito real”. Cervantes, de extracción panista, se encuentran en las redes sociales. Este acto, al hacerse público, le trajo fuertes críticas, ya que se puede entender que ella violó las leyes de México, en las que se determina que existe una separación entre iglesia y estado. Sin embargo, durante una conferencia de prensa, aclaró que su asistencia al evento fue a título personal y no como funcionaria municipal. Además, le extrañó que la gente se ensañara con ella, cuando ya los alcaldes de Guadalupe y Juárez también habían encabezado eventos similares en sus municipios sin ningún problema. “Monterrey Ora no es el único evento de ese tipo que se ha realizado en el estado, ya se hizo en Guadalupe en diciembre y en enero en Juárez”, expresó. Mencionó que no tuvo la intención de ofender a nadie con sus actos en ese evento. “Si en algún momento alguien se ha sentido ofendido eso no ha sido la intención de mis actos por el contrario asumo al responsabilidad de gobernar para todos y procurar el mayor bien posible para Monterrey”, reiteró.

MONTERREY – Monterrey Mayor Margarita Arellano Cervantes gave the keys of the city to Jesus Christ, a controversial move. “May God enter this city and make it his home, Jesus Christ, welcome to Monterrey,” Arellanes Cervantes said during a massive event named “Monterrey Prays”, organized by the Monterrey Pastors Alliance. “This is why we are gathered here and I, Margarita Alicia Arellanes Cervantes, hand over the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, to our Lord Jesus Christ, so that His kingdom of peace and His blessing is established,” she said. At the event she symbolically gave the keys to the city to Jesus Christ saying “I open the doors of this municipality to God as the highest authority, I acknowledge that without His presence and His help we cannot have real success.” The event took place June 8 and videos of Arellano Cervantes at the event are now in social media. She is a militant of the
National Action Party. This participation, when it became public knowledge, brought her many criticisms because it can be taken as a violation of Mexican law that states a clear separation between church and state. However, during a press conference, she said she had been there as a private citizen and not as the head of the municipality. Also, she was surprised that people were attacking her, because the mayors of Guadalupe and Juarez in the state of Nuevo Leon had headed similar events without a problem. “Monterrey Prays is not the only event of its kind that has taken place in the state, it was done in Guadalupe in December and in Juarez in January,” she said. The mayor also stated that she didn’t want to offend anybody with her participation in the event. “If at some time someone has been offended, that has not been the intention of my behavior, on the contrary, I assume all the responsibility of governing for everybody and do the best for Monterrey,” she said.
En Jalisco iberan a 275 jornaleros y desmantelan red de trata de personas REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ TOLIMÁN, JALISCO – En un operativo en el que participaron elementos federales y estatales, así como el Ejército, 275 personas fueron liberadas de una empresa productora y empacadora de tomate en el municipio de Tolimán en el sur del estado de Jalisco el 11 de junio. Los liberados eran obligados a trabajar contra su voluntad. De acuerdo a Salvador González de los Santos, fiscal regional, el campamento está ubicado en los límites con Colima. Ahí encontraron a personas originarias de comunidades rurales de Veracruz, San
Luis Potosí e Hidalgo. Esta planta y la situación de los trabajadores fueron descubiertas porque una persona logró escapar de ahí la semana pasada, llegó hasta Guadalajara y presentó una denuncia ante el gobierno estatal. “El jueves (6 de junio) se acercó a nosotros, refirió que logró escapar de este lugar, lo canalizamos a la Fiscalía Central, hizo la denuncia e iniciamos las investigaciones. Entonces encontramos graves violaciones y delitos, entre ellos privación ilegal de la libertad y trata”, dijo González de los Santos en una entrevista. Entre las personas rescatadas hay 15 familias y 39 adolescentes, quienes
fueron contratados para trabajar para la empresa Bioparques de Occidente S.A. de C.V. Los jornaleros esperaban tener una mejor condición de vida, pero fueron engañados. ““Los contratistas se anunciaban en la radio, en las comunidades, les ofrecían trabajo remunerado, comida y casa por tres meses, pero aquí la situación es otra. Ganan menos de lo que les ofrecían. Les dijeron que iban a ganar 100 pesos diarios y les pagan entre 50 y 70 pesos, los tienen en condiciones de hacinamiento, y des aseo, con mala alimentación y refieren que los retienen a la fuerza. Además les pagan con vales de despensa, no en efectivo”,
Regidora de Reynosa baleada en emboscada, segundo intento de matarla en un hospital REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ REYNOSA – Alguien tiene la intención de hacer desaparecer a la regidora de Reynosa Martha Josefina McDonald Chávez. Esto se hizo patente luego de que la política priísta sufriera dos atentados contra su vida en menos de una semana: uno en carretera y otro en el hospital. La mañana del 7 de junio la concejal sufrió heridas de bala cuando un grupo de personas armadas la atacó, con el pretexto de robarle su vehículo, mientras ella transitaba por la carretera Reynosa-Victoria. McDonald Chávez, su hijo y un secretario
fueron atacados a la altura de San Fernando. Ella fue trasladada a un hospital de Reynosa para recuperarse de las heridas sufridas, junto con su hijo. En el hospital otra persona intentó acabar con su vida. En este caso, un hombre de aproximadamente 40 años de edad, quien dijo ser reportero, pero no logró su objetivo. El hombre, al no llevar libreta, cámara de fotografía o video e identificación como reportero, levantó las sospechas y fue enfrentado por familiares de la concejal, quienes no permitieron que entrara a la habitación. This was evident after the PRI-affiliated politician was the target of two attempts against her life in less than a week: one on a highway and the other at a hospital.
The morning of June 7 the councilwoman suffered gunshot wounds when a group of armed people attacked her under the guise of stealing her vehicle, while she was traveling on the Reynosa-Victoria highway. At the hospital someone else tried to kill her. In this case it was a man about 40 years old, who said he was a reporter, but he didn’t succeed.

275 farmhands released, human trafficking ring busted in Jalisco UNA VOZ STAFF TOLIMAN, JALISCO – Federal and state authorities, with the support of the Mexican Army, freed 275 people from a tomato packing company in the municipality of Tomatlan, on the south of the state. The workers, who were freed on June 11, were forced to work against their will. According to regional prosecutor Salvador Gonzalez de los Santos, the camp is located near the border with the state of Colima. There authorities found people from rural areas of Veracruz, San Luis Potosi and Hidalgo. The packing company and the situation the workers were in were discovered because someone was able to escape last week, reached Guadalajara and denounced the situation before state authorities. “On Thursday (June 6) he came to us, told us that he was able to escape from this place, we sent him to the Central Office, he filed a complaint and we started the investigations. Then we found severe violations and crimes, among them illegal deprivation of liberty,” Gonzalez de los Santos said in an interview. There have been people whose contracts end and they are retained without pay for up to a month more,” he said. Gonzalez de los Santos said they are working directly with the company to get the money owed to the workers and to get the necessary means to return them to their communities. He also said that five supervisors were arrested and the investigation continues to determine the level of responsibility of the company, whose main headquarters are in Culiacan, Sinaloa.

Ten people injured in accidental shooting at a Kane County club UNA VOZ STAFF BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Ten people were injured when a shotgun accidentally went off inside the St. Charles Sportsman’s Club, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s office. Police responded to the club, located in an unincorporated area of Blackberry Township, at 7:30 p.m. June 4, after receiving a report of a gun that had
been fired in the club house. Seven people were treated at the scene as a result of the shooting, and three people were taken to a local hospital with non lifethreatening injuries. No charges were filed against the 69 year-old resident in St. Charles, who was handling the shotgun when the shot was fired. The man was treated for minor injuries.

Sentenced to 15 years in prison for selling cocaine UNA VOZ STAFF ELGIN – An Elgin resident has been sent to prison for possessing large amounts of cocaine, as well as a substance that he claimed was cocaine. Jorge A. Tejeda, 41, of the 300 block of North Crystal Street in Elgin, was sentenced to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Tejeda was convicted June 27, 2012, by a Kane County jury of one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class X felony, one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony, one count of unlawful delivery of a lookalike substance, a Class 3 felony, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card, a Class A misdemeanor.
On March 26, 2010, Tejeda exchanged with an undercover police officer $40,000 and six kilograms of a substance he said was low-quality cocaine for two kilograms of high-quality cocaine. Tejeda was arrested immediately after the transaction. The investigation revealed that the substance Tejeda had claimed was low-quality cocaine was not cocaine at all. According to Illinois law, Tejeda must serve at least 75 percent of the sentence. He was given credit for at least 1,168 days served in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest. “Mr. Tejeda told police that he already had a buyer for the cocaine, so his arrest kept two kilograms of cocaine out of Elgin, and his conviction and prison sentence takes another drug dealer out of our community,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

count of felony aggravated battery to a police officer and one misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing a police officer, after an incident on June 8.
Boyzo is accused of pushing an officers and stiffening his arms when officers tried to handcuff him. His bail was set at $100,000.

Sentenciado a 15 años por vender cocaína REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ ELGIN – Un residente de Elgin ha sido sentenciado a prisión por poseer grandes cantidades de cocaína, así como una substancia que él dijo era cocaína. Jorge A. Tejeda, de 41 años y residente de la cuadra 300 de North Crystal Street en Elgin, fue sentenciado a 15 años en prisión estatal. Tejeda fue encontrado culpalbe el 27 de junio de 2012 por un jurado del Condado de Kane de un cargo de posesión ilegal de una substancia controlada con intención de entregarla, una felonía; un cargo de posesión ilegal de una substancia controlada, una felonía; un cargo de entrega ilegal de una substancia parecida, una felonía; y un cargo de posesión ilegal de un arma de fuego sin una tarjeta de identificación para dueño de arma de fuego, un crimen menor. El 26 de marzo de 2010 Tejeda intercambió con un oficial de policía encubierto 40 mil
dólares y seis kilogramos de una substancia que él dijo era cocaína de baja calidad por dos kilogramos de cocaína de alta calidad. Tejeda fue arrestado inmediatamente después de que se realizara la transacción. La investigación reveló que la substancia que Tejeda dijo era cocaína de baja calidad no era cocaína. Supermercado niega haber huido de East Dundee sin pagar préstamo REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ EAST DUNDEE – El dueño de un supermercado en esta localidad que ya cerró sus puertas ha negado acusaciones del administrador de East Dundee Allen Skillicorn de que se fue debiendo un préstamo de 30 mil dólares. “Veo que esta persona me está usando como instrumento para vengarse de yo no se quien, pero de alguien”, dijo Fred Thompson, ex dueño del supermercado que estaba ubicado en el Centro Comercial River Valley en Dundee Road. Thompson dijo que la villa está enterada que él tiene una demanda interpuesta contra el dueño de ese centro comercial, Emin Tuluce. En 2011 la mesa directiva de la Villa de East Dundee aprobó con 5 votos a favor y 1 en contra el dar a Discount Grocery LLC 30 mil dólares en fondos de financiamiento de incremento de impuestos, para que se estableciera en la villa. Supermarket denies charges of leaving East Dundee without paying loan UNA VOZ STAFF EAST DUNDEE – The owner of a nowclosed supermarket has denied charges from village administrator Allen Skillicorn that he left owing the village $30,000. “I see this guy as using me as a pawn to get back at I don’t know who, but somebody out there he’s got it in for,” supermarket owner Fred Thompson said. The business was located at the River Valley Shopping Center on Dundee Road. Thompson said the village is informed that
he has filed a lawsuit against the shopping center owner, Emin Tuluce. In 2011 the East Dundee Village Board voted 5-1 to give Discount Grocery LLC $30,000 in tax increment financing funds to establish the business in the village. Thompson said that after he opened up his business at the shopping center, Tuluce told him he couldn’t afford to keep the space in the shopping center and that all the tenants may have to be released. A short time later there was a fire in the supermarket. “Because of it, we were told we couldn’t run
the lights or air conditioner on the south side of the store or it would keep popping circuits and maybe cause another fire,” Thompson said. “Could you run a grocery store with no lights or air conditioner? Do you think customers could come in and buy stuff?” Thompson filed a lawsuit against Tuluce, who countersued and notified Thompson he had to vacate the place. Tuluce said he is astounded by what Thompson has said and denied a fire happened at the store. Meanwhile Skillicorn has said Thompson only collected a few hundred
dollars in taxes for the village and still owes East Dundee taxpayers over $29,000. Thompson said any money not recovered through taxes, he would pay but that “right now I don’t have two quarters to rub together.” As for the charges that he left the village, Thompson said he has items from his grocery business stored in an empty commercial space in the same shopping center, but in an area belonging to a different owner. The village president said this matter is under investigation, including what Skillicorn said about the money owed to the village.

Playa en Rockford abre luego de derrame de amonia REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ ROCKFORD – Una playa de Rockford reabrió sus puertas esta semana, luego de que la semana pasada se registrara una fuga de amonia anhidra, de acuerdo con información del Distrito de Parques de Rockford. De acuerdo a investigadores, el 4 de junio un camión tanque abrió una tubería al echarse en reversa. Luego de esto, se pudieron observar peces muertos en un estanque en Conserv FS, en South Meridian Road. El estanque está ubicado a tres millas al oeste de Stanfield Beach en el Parque Levings. El distrito de parques informó que la playa fue cerrada para realizar pruebas de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de Illinois. Rockford beach reopens after ammonia leak UNA VOZ STAFF ROCKFORD – A Rockford beach reopened to the public this week, after an anhydrous ammonia spill registered last week, according to the Rockford Park District. According to investigators, on June 4 a tanker backed into a pipe, breaking it open. After this happened, dead fish were spotted in a pond at Conserv FS on South Meridian Road. The pond is three miles west of Stanfield Beach in Levings Park. The park district said the beach was closed to perform Illinois Environmental Protection Agency tests. The park remained open to the public, but swimming was prohibited. The park features swimming, beach volleyball and paddle boats.
Police officers involved in deadly shooting in Beloit UNA VOZ STAFF BELOIT – Two Beloit police officers were involved in a deadly shooting in the city’s downtown on June 11. Officers were trying to pull a man over, but the man refused and officers shot when they felt the situation was out of control. “The officer on that side of the vehicle feared he was going to be ran over and shots were fired by the officers, the suspect unfortunately did not survive,” Beloit Police Department Captain Vince Sciame said. Investigators with the Drug and Gang Unit said they had been following the man because he had a Wisconsin Department of Corrections warrant. The shooting happened shortly after the man left a home in the 1100 block of 5th Street and ended in downtown Beloit, near Grand and State streets. The name of the man was not released. However, the mother of his child said this was a tragic end to his life. “He was on probation, he did have warrants out for his arrest, that is true, but him trying to run an officer over and trying to get away, I just don’t believe it. I feel like they had no reason to shoot him. Now he’s dead and he’s got a four year old daughter that never going to see him again,” Shawnna Meinen said. The officers were reassigned to desk duty while the investigation continues.

Sgt. Larry Marino from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s office said Dusting McIntire, 31, was trying to convert marijuana into hash oil or hashish, using butane. Marino said that when McIntire tried to place the concoction in the freezer, it exploded. The front windows of the home were blown out and the kitchen was heavily
damaged. The freezer door was found on the front lawn. Two other people who were at the home were not injured and are not related to the explosion. McIntire was charged with possession with intent to deliver 30 grams of marijuana and of not having a FOID card for ammunition found in the home.

Rockford police responded to the Marathon Gas Station located at the corner of 11th Street and Sawyer Road at about 2 a.m. June 9. There they found Henson and two other people with gunshot wounds. The other two victims were treated and released from
area hospitals. Police believe Henson was involved in a fight with another group and someone supporting the other party pulled out a gun and fired shots. Police are still investigating this murder. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (815) 963-7867.

terminaron siendo anulados. El primero en octubre de 2012, cuando un testigo hizo un comentario en la corte en pleno, luego de abandonar el banquillo de los testigos. El segundo juicio terminó en enero de 2013, cuando el jurado no se pudo poner de acuerdo.
La selección del jurado comenzó el 10 de junio. Kerry Davis fue encontrado con un tiro en el pecho en un callejón en el área de 800 King Street y Evelyn Street en julio de 2009. Herrera se ha declarado no culpable de este asesinato.
