Pre-press is a term used in printing that describes the process that files go through before printing actually takes place It's the stage where they're prepared and edited, where graphics are checked, and all proofing is performed to ensure the information is correct and arranged so that it will print just the way the customer desires Digital pre-press is visual information taking on an electronic form in order to output film for printing Over 75 percent of all prepress work is now being done digitally in the graphic arts world

Today, pre-press houses are able to work with large, complex files to produce film with special screenings, drop shadows, four-color images, traps and bleeds This results in beautifully crafted pieces with lifelike photographs, sharp text and stunning graphics, all creating visual interest for the reader

The pre-press process begins with the creation of digital artwork saved in a software layout program such as QuarkExpress, the industry standard The file is given to a prepress house, where transparencies of photos are drum scanned, turned into high resolution digital information, downloaded onto a disk and output on thick specialty paper for proofing At this stage, color correction (minor adjustments) or retouching (major additions or deletions to an image) are done in Adobe Photoshop, an image manipulation and special effects software program The high resolution images are dropped into the layout and a sent to the preflight department, where disks are scrutinized, with specialized software, like Extensis ProFlight, for corruption, missing logos, fonts and correct color Once a file has passed thorough inspection, it is sent through a complex computer network to an image setter, a computer controlled device that outputs images as a pattern of millions of tiny dots on photographic paper that will be developed into film

High end print jobs would not exist without the preparation of digital files and the creation of film by pre-press houses, which are the two main applications for this industry Both designer and printer rely heavily upon the pre-press house to produce quality film that will manifest itself into an ad, brochure or coupon

The printing and publishing industries are among the most geographically dispersed in the United States While pre-press jobs thus are found throughout the country, large numbers are concentrated in large printing centers such as the Chicago, Los Angeles–Long Beach, New York City, Minneapolis–St Paul, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, DC metropolitan areas

The worldwide printing consumables market, including film, plates and proofing materials, is a $5 billion industry With companies needing to produce more and more promotional materials to market their goods and services, quality pre-press work has become critical. Growth in this industry is inevitable, but it is an expensive proposition. With client needs expanding, pre-press houses must stay current on changing technology and make shrewd, timely investments in software and equipment Macintosh hardware continues to dominate this segment of the market, to the point that many pre-press houses will reject PC files because of consistent problems with this format

Employment of prepress technicians and workers is projected to decline rapidly through 2019, because of improvements in printing technology that require fewer of these workers Despite this, job prospects are good for prepress technicians with good computer and customer service skills

A key trend observed in the global prepress market for packaging is the crucial emphasis given by packaging converters to color management and proofing requirements The steady growth of e-publishing and the advancement in traditional pre-press services has enabled the expansion of the printing industry as a whole. With the growth of e-publishing and rapidly changing ways in which people consume the print media, it is imperative for pre-press professionals to stay up-to-date with the latest changes

Fast-Curing Silicone Ink Opens new Doors for 3D Printing

Kodak will highlight unmatched speed and versatility in inkjet production printing by running live demonstrations of the KODAK PROSPER 7000 Turbo Press, the world's fastest webfed full-color inkjet press, at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2025 (Feb 24-27, Lucerne, Switzerland), booth P4 in hall 1 The show will be the PROSPER 7000 Turbo Press’s first appearance in Europe Kodak will showcase the PROSPER 7000 Turbo Press printing with water-based KODAK EKTACOLOR Inks in a roll-to-roll configuration with an unwinder and a rewinder designed and manufactured by Kodak The PROSPER 7000 Turbo Press is the world’s fastest inkjet press, according to Kodak, capable of printing at speeds of up to 410 mpm (1,345 fpm). Its three print modes Turbo, Performance and Quality enable printers to easily fine-tune optimal speed and quality balance for each job. These capabilities make the PROSPER 7000 Turbo Press an excellent solution for migrating larger direct mail, commercial, transactional, and book printing jobs from offset to digital.

Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed a new method to 3D print sturdy silicone structures that are bigger, taller, thinner and more porous than ever before The team’s two-part “fast cure” silicone-based ink for direct ink writing mixes just before printing and sets quickly at room temperature, allowing for longer print times, simplifying the fabrication process, and ensuring structures will not collapse or sag, even in complex

configurations. Their research appears on the front cover of the October issue of

this is the simplest solution and the bulletproof one,” said Anna Güell Izard, a postdoc in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) and the paper’s first author. “There is nothing extra to worry about; you can just print ” Silicone is a widely used polymer known for its flexibility, resilience and biocompatibility, making it ideal for protective materials, biomedical devices especially implants and prostheses flexible electronics, soft robotics and more 3D printing, a type of additive manufacturing, makes the material even more versatile by fabricating hollow or porous structures that traditional manufacturing cannot.

roland DGa announces north american Launch of new Ty-300 DTF Printer

Roland DGA Corporation announced the North American launch of the new Roland DG TY-300, a state-of-the-art direct-to-film (DTF) printer engineered for exceptional image quality, productivity, and cost-efficiency.

The TY-300 delivers vibrant, detailed transfer graphics for apparel customization at speeds up to four times faster than competitive models while minimizing running costs

manage diverse job sizes efficiently.

Bema and W&H have been partners since 2007, when they purchased their first press, a PRIMAFLEX Since then, they have continued to invest in W&H technology, which also includes a MIRAFLEX II and blown film lines for their sister company, Elite Extrusion Technology.

“This investment aligns perfectly with our core business p h i l o s o p h y o f e x c e p

adaptability,” said Glen Galloway, President at Galloway Consolidated Holdings “We are known for our ability to handle high-quality small to medium sized jobs The VISTAFLEX II’s advanced features, like fast makeready times and robotic interfaces, will further enhance our capabilities ”

While the DTF transfer method is a relatively new solution for creating custom apparel and textiles, it has gained tremendous popularity over a short period of time The process involves just four simple steps After printing on a special film, hot-melt powder is applied and thermally melted, then the film is layered on fabric and heat-pressed

One of the primary reasons the DTF method is becoming so popular is that it allows complex printed designs and even smaller text to be transferred effectively to a wide range of materials, including cotton, polyester, cotton polyester, denim, nylon, and rayon, as well as dark and light pigmented materials The DTF process also allows for the creation of garments and accessories with a “soft-hand” natural feel and outstanding washability

The TY-300 boasts newly developed printheads that allow for the precise expression of fine lines, small letters, and detailed designs, as well as highly accurate photo reproduction

With smartGraVurE, gravure printing enters the digital age

A smart investment with significant benefits

The benefits for converters and brand owners are immediately clear Downtime in job changeovers is reduced by up to 70%, enabling significant productivity gains.

The machine provides 100% job repeatability and perfect color consistency In fact, the MASTER RS 6003 with oneECG technology is officially Pantone validated, providing complete peace of mind

It has significant sustainability benefits The innovative technology reduces waste and ink waste drastically by up to 50%, and lowers the energy consumption of this printing process, which also provides an economic advantage

Excitingly, it opens up gravure printing for medium and short jobs It enables profitable production of smaller and medium-sized orders from about 5,000 m². Orders can be delivered faster with high profitability, whether they are small, medium or long runs.

For brand owners that require premium quality packaging, gravure has always been the obvious choice. However, until now, it has been a challenge for gravure printers to meet the increasing demands for shorter print runs, faster delivery and more sustainability

Now, with the leap forward in innovation provided by smartGRAVURE, all of this is possible, setting them on the path for a highly productive and profitable future.

KODaK Plates made in Gunma improve reliability of supply and sustainability for printers throughout japan

The supply chain issues and geopolitical developments of recent years, along with the increasing focus on sustainability, have created challenges for offset printers seeking a reliable supply of plates from suppliers focused on minimizing their car b o n f o o tp r in t. C o n s id er in g th es e ch allen g es , K O D A K

SONORA Process Free Plates, manufactured at Kodak’s Gunma plant are a smart choice for any printer in Japan. Kodak has a long history of manufacturing high-quality and technologically advanced offset printing plates to exacting standards and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as the first and longest-running manufacturer and supplier of true process free printing plates in the world Kodak’s state-of-theart plate manufacturing plant in Gunma, 70 km northwest of Tokyo station, underscores the company’s commitment to greener, local production of consumables

The location on Japan's main Honshu island and the well-established supply chain and logistics infrastructure in the country ensure that KODAK printing plates can be shipped quickly and efficiently in all required sizes and quantities so that customers across Japan are supplied on time

Local manufacturing + process-free = compelling sustainability benefits

The procurement of plates from domestic manufacturing reduces the carbon footprint due to significantly shorter and more efficient transport routes In addition, in the case of SONORA Process Free Plates, the product itself is considerably more sustainable and has a more favorable ecological footprint compared to traditional wet processed plates

The switch from processed plates to SONORA Plates eliminates electricity, water, developer, replenisher and gumming solution, and clean-out finisher required for traditional plate processing Since there is not any chemistry used, and no plate processor in need of cleaning and maintenance, there are no waste chemicals or contaminated residual liquids to be disposed of Furthermore, printers benefit from more consistent and stable plates that enable more reliable press make-readies and no downtime and paper waste due to plate processing defects This also means that SONORA Plate users can streamline their platemaking operations enormously, get to press much faster, and reduce job turnaround times All of this can make a huge difference in terms of carbon footprint

The most critical feature of SONORA Plates is to enable printers to run their businesses more eco-friendly and resourcesaving without having to compromise on image quality, productivity and run length stability A constantly growing number of Japanese printers are taking advantage of these benefits Impressive proof of this is that SONORA Plates now account for more than 60% of Kodak's plate production volume in Japan

Plates from the domestic market for the domestic market

Mitsuru Sasaki, Plant Manager at Kodak’s Gunma plate plant, answers a few questions regarding the production of SONORA Plates in Japan and their delivery to customers Why is it important for Kodak to have domestic plate manufacturing and related R&D in Japan?

The Japanese market places special demands on the high, consistent quality and performance of printing plates Local plate manufacturing with our own research and development is extremely important for us to meet these high demands and ensure ontime shipment to our customers Moreover, domestic manufacturing helps Kodak to compete successfully in the Japanese market and continue to grow our plates business

What are the benefits to Japanese printers of using Kodak plates made domestically?

The technical and performance features of domestic-made Kodak plates are optimally matched to the needs of Japanese print businesses, making these products an excellent choice for them With many of Kodak’s customers keeping tight control of their inventory and attempting to keep inventory low, a domestic source is the logical choice to quickly replenish stock in the event of sudden increases in demand. Thanks to local manufacturing, Kodak can offer a robust and flexible supply chain with short transportation routes, ensuring on-time shipment to customers. to be Continue......
