Program-providing psychological rehabilitation for Ukrainian women and children severely affected by the war.

Yosyf Zisels, a former Soviet dissident and political prisoner, is co-president of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine. In the early 1970s, he worked with the Jewish and democratic underground movements in the Soviet Union, and in 1978, joined the Ukrainian Helsinki Group. He was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for “slanderous insinuations that denigrate the Soviet state and social order.” In 1984, he was sentenced to another three years.

He is now leading a project called Recovery During the Time of the War to provide psychological counseling to thousands of Ukrainians who have been traumatized by the Russian invasion.

Making a difference – Helping to heal: Highlights of the HWF

“We have created a women-support group at Three Holy Hierarchs parish in Brovary. Father Oleh is always here for us, praying together, showing support and care. We mourn our loved ones, but we also learn to trust the Lord and support each other the best we can.”

The HWF has supported eight summer camps serving over 200 children of IDPs as well as those in need. Children from eastern Ukraine have not been able to return to school after the Russian invasion, which damaged 3,428 schools and completely destroyed another 365. The remaining school buildings in the region cannot be opened because of the constant air raids and bombing. Summer rehabilitation camps conducted in western Ukraine helped the children to heal from war trauma, restoring a small part of their stolen childhood.

When the Russian missiles hit one of the largest children’s hospitals in Kyiv, Okhmatdyt, on July 8, 2024, killing and wounding innocent children and medical personnel, we rushed in to provide help. The HWF worked with our reliable partner: the Kyiv Archeparchy of the UGCC. We helped to purchase necessary medical equipment and provided air conditioning units for children who survived the bombing and were moved to other medical hospitals in Kyiv.
