Inleiding Introduction

Zowel in haar fotografie als in haar beelden laat Micky Hoogendijk haar kracht en haar kwetsbaarheid zien. Van haar eerste foto’s uit 2012 tot aan haar laatste serie The Meetings of the Waters, alsook in haar sculpturen The Ones weet zij deze twee uitersten onlosmakelijk met elkaar te verbinden.

Deze monografie plaatst Hoogendijks werk in het licht van haar persoon, van heden en verleden en van de kunstgeschiedenis.

Het is een oprecht, open en intrigerend beeld van haar leven en gedachtewereld ter duiding van haar kunst.

Waarom ben je wie je bent, doe je wat je doet en maak je wat je maakt? Waar is de tijd tussen geboorte en dood voor bedoeld? Is leven tijdverdrijf? Hoe geef je zin aan je bestaan?

Ik vroeg het Micky tijdens onze gesprekken in haar huis in Hoogeloon. Ik wilde weten wie zij was. Simpelweg vanuit een onbeschaamd verlangen de ander te kennen – en daarmee ook mezelf. Want in een ontmoeting komen levens samen. En in dat spanningsveld tussen twee ogenschijnlijk verschillende werelden ontstaat herkenning of onbegrip. Door je open te stellen en onbevooroordeeld te luisteren naar wat de ander te vertellen heeft, leer je ook jezelf beter begrijpen. Micky heeft zich voor mij opengesteld. Zij heeft mij in alle openheid haar verhaal verteld. Zij heeft mij toegelaten tot haar gedachten, mij meegenomen in haar leven en haar kunst. Niet omdat haar verhaal uitzonderlijk is, maar omdat het, zonder enige normering, waard is verteld te worden, net als elk ander verhaal van elk ander mens.

Met haar werk vertelt Hoogendijk over de keuzes die het leven haar geeft: ga je door of breek je? Sta je stil of ga je verder? Ze kiest ervoor het leven te vieren. Vreugde en pijn zet zij om in zowel eigentijdse als tijdloze beelden: in fotografie en sinds 2020 ook in sculptuur. Haar thematiek kenmerkt zich door aandacht voor de mens in al zijn diversiteit. Hoogendijk focust zich op portret- en naaktfotografie en haar foto’s tonen universele tegenstellingen als licht en donker, leegte en vervulling, openheid en verhulling, als metafoor voor geboorte en dood, de essentie van ieders leven. Terugkerende onderwerpen zijn vrijheid en bevrijding, de vrouw en het moederschap, evenals water, naaktheid en maskers. In het verhalende karakter van haar serene en verstilde voorstellingen vind je herinneringen aan de schilderkunst van de Vlaamse primitieven, aan Vermeer en aan het laatnegentiendeeeuwse symbolisme. Hoogendijks dromen komen erin voor, net als zijzelf. Gestileerde distantie, rauwzoet realisme en verfijnde esthetiek tekenen haar beeldtaal, waarbij digitale beeldmanipulatie de gelaagdheid versterkt. De symboliek van haar foto’s is zowel klassiek als hedendaags, universeel als persoonlijk. Net zoals die van Hoogendijks sculpturen 8

Micky Hoogendijk shows her strength and her vulnerability in both her photographs and her sculpture. From her first photographs taken in 2012 to her latest series The Meetings of the Waters, and in her sculpture series The Ones, she always manages to inextricably link these two extremes. This monograph considers her work in the context of Hoogendijk as an individual, of the past and the present, and of art history. This sincere, frank and intriguing look at her life and ideas will give readers a deeper understanding of her art.

Why are you who you are? Why do you do what you do and make what you make? What is the time between birth and death for? Is life just a matter of passing the time? How do you give your life meaning? These were questions I put to Micky when we talked at her home in Hoogeloon. I wanted to know who she is, simply from a desire to know another, and thus also to know myself. For in every encounter lives collide. And the tension that arises between two apparently different worlds is where identification or misunderstanding occurs. Opening yourself up and listening without prejudice to what another has to say can teach you a lot about yourself. Micky opened herself up to me. She told me her story quite frankly. She let me into her mind, guided me through her life and her art. Not because her story is exceptional but because, without wishing to pass any judgment, it is worth telling, just as the story of every other person is.

Hoogendijk’s work tells us about the choices life has given her: carry on or break down, come to a standstill or keep moving. She chooses to celebrate life, converting both joy and pain into contemporary yet timeless images, in the form of photographs and – since 2020 – sculptures.

The themes in her work centre on humankind in all its diversity. Hoogendijk focuses on portraiture and nude photography, and her images feature universal contrasts like dark and light, emptiness and fulfilment, disclosure and concealment, as a metaphor for birth and death, the essence of every life. Freedom and liberation, woman and motherhood are recurring themes, as are water, the naked body and masks. The narrative nature of her serene, tranquil images is reminiscent of the paintings of the Flemish primitives, of Vermeer and of late nineteenth-century symbolism.

Hoogendijk’s dreams feature in her pictures, as does the artist herself. Stylised distance, bittersweet realism and refined aesthetics define her visual idiom, with digital image manipulation enhancing the layered quality. The symbolism of her photographs is both classical and contemporary, universal and personal.

The same is true of the sculptures in The Ones, Hoogendijk’s first venture into sculpture. Just

as Hoogendijk’s photographs are self-portraits, she reveals herself in these abstractly rendered human figures too. Her work cannot be understood without knowing her a little: she is what she makes.

At the same time, she is in turn reflected in her viewers.

“What I do makes me genuinely happy. It’s my happiness machine and a sheer necessity, perhaps even to carry on living. I know there is another, darker side in me, the flipside of the will to create.

But I don’t allow myself to go that way. Up to now I’ve always been thankful that I keep choosing the good side.” Hoogendijk is referring indirectly here to the main human archetypes identified by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, much of whose work she has read: the Persona, the Shadow, the Anima, the Animus and the Self. The Persona is the mask someone wears when they show themselves to the rest of the world, and are not revealing their true self. Jung regarded the Shadow as the dark side of the unconscious. Then there is the Anima, the female side of the psyche and the Animus, the male side. The Self symbolises someone’s entire personality, the merging of the conscious and subconscious. Though Jung associates these five archetypes with all people, it is a marvellous coincidence that they can be linked so specifically to Hoogendijk’s art.

“If I hadn’t started working on myself, I would have become an entirely different person.

Accommodating the hardness of the things that befall you seems like an impossible task. But I wanted to do something with it, I have to. And the only way I’ve found I can is to make things.”

The beauty of art helps Hoogendijk to embrace the darker side of life – the pain and sadness, the grimness and emptiness. She deliberately chooses to focus on her work, simply because that is what she finds most rewarding. “I set out to transform major events into something wonderful.

The loneliness I show is never explicit, always concealed. But when I take photographs and make sculptures, the dominant feeling is pleasure. I love creating and making images.” Hoogendijk started documenting her feelings in order to let them go.

She believes she would never have achieved what she has so far without her work as an actor.

Finding meaning within the chaos of life is hard work, and takes a lot of searching. Hoogendijk finds her answers in her boundless imagination, her constant companion.

Art has a purifying effect, both for the maker and for the viewer. Its enchants, nourishes and heals.

The powerful emotions that art evokes fill and empty your mind at the same time. Experiencing art with all your senses allows it to overwhelm you and stimulate your fantasy. It is an endless source of amazement, one of the most important human abilities, which connects and transcends

The Ones, haar eerste beeldhouwproject. Zoals haar foto’s zelfportretten zijn, zo geeft zij zichzelf bloot in deze abstract vormgegeven mensfiguren. Haar werk kan niet worden geduid zonder haar te kennen: zij is dat wat ze maakt. En tegelijk spiegelt zij zichzelf in de beschouwer.

“Ik word oprecht gelukkig van wat ik doe. Het is mijn gelukmaakmachine en pure noodzaak, misschien ook wel om te blijven leven. Ik weet dat er in mij ook een andere, donkere kant zit, de keerzijde van de wil tot creëren. Maar ik sta mezelf niet toe om die richting op te gaan. Tot nu toe ben ik alleen maar dankbaar dat ik steeds de goede kant kies.” Hoogendijk verwijst indirect naar de belangrijkste menstypen die de Zwitserse psychiater Carl Jung – van wie zij veel heeft gelezen – onderscheidt: de Persona, de Schaduw, de Anima, de Animus en het Zelf. Met de Persona doelt hij op het masker dat iemand draagt als hij zich aan de buitenwereld presenteert en dus niet zijn ware ik toont. De Schaduw beschouwt Jung als de duistere zijde van het onbewuste. Dan zijn er de Anima, het vrouwelijk deel van de psyche, en de Animus, de mannelijke kant. Het Zelf staat symbool voor iemands totale persoonlijkheid, voor het samengaan van het bewustzijn en het onderbewustzijn.

Hoezeer Jung deze vijf archetypen ook koppelt aan alle mensen, het is een wonderlijk toeval dat ze zo specifiek kunnen worden gerelateerd aan Hoogendijks kunstuitingen.

“Als ik niet aan mezelf was gaan werken, was ik echt een heel ander mens geworden, ondanks de onmogelijkheid de hardheid van wat je overkomt een plek te geven. Maar ik wil er wel iets mee doen, dat moet ik gewoon. En de enige manier die ik voor mezelf heb gevonden is door dingen te maken.”

De schoonheid van kunst helpt Hoogendijk de schaduwzijde van het leven – waarin pijn en verdriet, zwaarte en leegte – te omarmen. Ze maakt bewust de keuze om zich te focussen op haar werk, simpelweg omdat ze daar het meeste uithaalt: “Ik ambieer het omzetten van grote gebeurtenissen naar iets moois, waarbij de eenzaamheid die ik laat zien nooit expliciet is, altijd verhuld. Maar bij het maken van mijn foto’s en beelden overheerst alleen plezier. Ik vind het heerlijk om te creëren en te verbeelden.” Hoogendijk is gaan vastleggen om los te laten. Ze gelooft dat ze nooit had kunnen bereiken waar ze nu is zonder haar werk als acteur. Zingeving ontdekken binnen de chaos van het leven is hard werken en zoeken. Hoogendijk vindt haar antwoorden in de oneindigheid van haar verbeeldingskracht die ze altijd met zich meedraagt.

Kunst werkt louterend, zowel bij maker als toeschouwer. Het betovert, voedt en heelt. De krachtige emoties die kunst opwekt vullen en legen je gedachten tegelijkertijd. Door deze met al je zintuigen te ervaren kan kunst je overweldigen en je fantasie 9

stimuleren. Ze is een eindeloze bron voor de verwondering, één van de belangrijkste menselijke vermogens die verbindt en alles overstijgt, omdat het van alle tijden en van iedereen is. Hoogendijk ervaart de kracht van de verbeelding als de onbevangenheid en energie van een kind. Kunst maken is voor haar als spelen. Het bevrijdt haar van zorg, stelt haar gerust en overtuigt haar dat het goed is wat ze doet. Hoogendijks intrinsieke behoefte om te creëren is sterk aanwezig. “Het maken, dat is voor mij het belangrijkste, en daarna laat ik het los.” Dat creatieve proces brengt haar terug naar haar gevoel van kind zijn. Ze is heel bewust bezig goed en autonoom werk te maken, maar wel volgens haar eigen maatstaf. Daarbij wil ze niets verliezen van haar belangrijkste drijfveer: zo dicht mogelijk bij zichzelf blijven. Ze maakt, omdat ze daar simpelweg gelukkig van wordt. “Uiteindelijk komt het er gewoon op neer dat ik mensen wil raken, omdat dat voor mij de bedoeling is van het leven.

De onzichtbare connectie tussen kunstenaar en beschouwer is voor Hoogendijk waardevol. In haar werk geeft zij zichzelf weer en daarmee ook de ander. Want hoe verschillend je op het eerste gezicht soms lijkt, hoe anders je context en ideeën, uiteindelijk ga je door dezelfde emoties. Liefde en verdriet, geluk en teleurstelling: in de kern zijn deze gevoelens voor iedereen gelijk. En hoewel geboorte en dood – en alles wat daartussen zit – universele begrippen zijn, begrijp je ze pas als je er zelf mee te maken krijgt. Collectieve emoties worden altijd ingekleurd door individuele karakters. En dat maakt ieders verhaal bijzonder.

Binnen het grotere geheel van het universum is de mens een onbeduidende stip, vindt Hoogendijk Tegelijk stelt het haar gerust dat alles veel groter is dan de wereld waarin je leeft.

“Wij denken dat dit het is. Maar het is veel mooier dan dit. Er is een ondefinieerbaar gebied waar alles samenkomt. En ergens daar zit de magie voor mij.” Het gaat haar om wat er gebeurt in de onbegrensde ruimte tussen mensen. Als de hunkering naar herkenning de rode draad kan zijn van het bestaan, dan blijft ongetwijfeld ook de verwondering aanwezig.

Dit boek is niet alleen een ontmoeting met Hoogendijk, maar eveneens met jezelf. Het is een bewijs van overeenkomende levens, een getuigenis van de kracht en kwetsbaarheid die in ieder mens schuilt.

everything because it is timeless and universal.

Hoogendijk experiences the power of imagination as the energy and spontaneity of a child. Making art is like playing. It frees her from her cares, reassures her and convinces her that what she is doing is right. Hoogendijk’s innate need to create is very strong. “Making, that’s the most important thing for me, and then I let it go.” This creative process takes her back to the way she felt as a child. She quite deliberately sets out to make good autonomous work, but she judges it by her own standards. She is careful not to lose the thing that drives her: staying as true to herself as possible. She creates simply because it makes her happy. “At the end of the day, I simply want to touch people, because to me that is the meaning of life.”

The invisible connection between artist and viewer is important to Hoogendijk. Her work reflects herself, and thus also the other. However different you may seem at first, however different the context of your life and your ideas, ultimately we all experience the same emotions. Love and loss, happiness and disappointment: in essence, these feelings are the same for everyone. And although birth and death – and everything in between – are universal concepts, you only really understand them when you experience them yourself. Collective emotions are always coloured by individual personalities, and that makes everyone’s story special.

Humans are an inconsequential speck of dust in the larger whole that is the universe, Hoogendijk believes. Yet she is consoled by the fact that there is something much bigger than the world she lives in. “We have the idea that this is it. But it’s much more amazing than this. There’s an indefinable place where everything comes together, and that’s where the magic lies for me.”

She is interested in what happens in the limitless space between people. Whilever the longing for identification remains the common thread of human existence, there will undoubtedly always be wonder and amazement.

This book is not only an encounter with Hoogendijk, it is also an encounter with yourself. It is evidence of corresponding lives, a testament to the strength and vulnerability in us all.

Onderstroom Undertow

Zwembad Waar muze Elisabeth Siddal in de winter in een door olielampen verwarmde badkuip met water poseerde voor Millais, maakte Hoogendijk voor haar onderwaterfoto’s onder andere gebruik van het zwembad bij haar huis in Austin in Texas, waar ze in 2012 kwam wonen. “Het water vond ik daar zo mooi. En vooral dat ieder uur van de dag de kleur anders was. Het was een prachtig zwembad, rechthoekig maar zonder hoeken of lijnen, alleen maar rondingen. De perfecte fotostudio.” Het was een intensief proces om onder water te fotograferen: “Ik stond in het zwembad en moest tegelijk met het model naar beneden gaan. Ik hield mijn adem in, ging onder en mee in haar beweging en knipte dan. Heel praktisch en basaal, maar het was zo magisch onder water.”

De Sunlight-serie uit 2014 beschouwt Hoogendijk nu als een vingeroefening; haar latere waterfoto’s vindt ze in technisch opzicht beter geslaagd (afb. 83-85). De werking van de zon in het water en de manier waarop het licht wordt weerkaatst, waren voor haar een geschenk dat ze alleen maar hoefde te ontvangen: “Het was er gewoon. En het werkte.”

Hoogendijk bepaalde daarentegen wel wat haar beelden moeten uitdrukken. Al haar modellen vroeg ze om zo gracieus mogelijk te bewegen, zoals ze zelf deed in Selfportrait (afb. 86). “Ik wilde dat bewegingen elegant zijn. Maar ik wilde ook dat er een kracht doorheen gaat. Ze moesten voelen wat ze aan het doen waren.” Onder water zijn betekent voor Hoogendijk een verblijf in een andere wereld. Voor haar is het een plek die voelt als haar dromen: vol mysterie, beweging en stilstand. En precies dat moment van opperste verstilling probeert zij vast te houden in haar foto’s.

Bron In 2016 toonde Hoogendijk enkele onderwaterfoto’s in haar solotentoonstelling Through The Eyes of Others in Galería Arte XXI te Mexico City. Ze vroeg zich af of haar naakten wel geaccepteerd zouden worden binnen de religieuze Mexicaanse gemeenschap. Maar binnen die gelovige context kon ze juist rekenen op instemming, want haar naakten worden bedekt door water, symbool voor zuiverheid. De algemene symboliek die aan water wordt toegekend is tweeledig. Enerzijds wordt het geassocieerd met leven en vruchtbaarheid, anderzijds staat het voor zonde en dood. Water wordt beschouwd als de bron van het leven, heilzaam en reinigend. Als een kind wordt gedoopt, betekent dat dat het wordt ingewijd in een nieuw bestaan, dat het toetreedt tot het geloof in God. Het water dat daarbij gebruikt wordt, symboliseert het afscheid van het oude en het kwade, waarbij hergeboorte het nieuwe en het goede betekent. Hoogendijks waterscènes tonen een persoonlijke symboliek, passend binnen de individualisering van de eenentwintigste-eeuwse kunst. Maar de aloude duiding van water als reflectie van de ziel en verbeelding van puurheid is evengoed in haar fotografie terug te vinden.

Wassende maan Water stroomt. Het komt en gaat, zoals de maan in de nacht. Binnen Hoogendijks fotografie vormt het een rode draad waar zij telkens weer bij terugkomt. In haar onderwatervoorstellingen, in The Meetings of the Waters (afb. 6, 8-22) en in The Art of Love (afb. 115-118, 121-127, 130) staat water centraal, alsook in The World Is Your Oyster (afb. 91).

Zoals haar foto’s zelfportretten zijn, zo is Hoogendijk zelf het water dat zij afbeeldt. Zonder waarde te hechten aan het geloof in de relatie tussen de stand van de hemellichamen en het lot van de mens, maar ook zonder 108

Swimming pool Millais’s muse Elizabeth Siddal posed for him in the winter, in a bathtub heated by oil lamps. Hoogendijk took her underwater pictures in the swimming pool at her home in Austin, Texas, where she moved in 2012. “I thought the water there was so lovely. And particularly the fact that the colour changed every hour of the day. It was a beautiful pool, rectangular but without corners or lines, just curves. The perfect photographic studio.”

Taking pictures under water was an absorbing process. “I was standing in the pool and had to go down in time with the model.

I held my breath, went under and tracked her movement, then squeezed the shutter. Totally practical and basic, but it was so magical under the water.”

Hoogendijk now regards the Sunlight series of 2014 as a mere exercise; she thinks her later water photographs are technically much better (figs. 83-85). The effect of the sun on the water and the way the light is reflected felt like a gift, and all she had to do was accept it. “It was just there. And it worked.” But Hoogendijk controlled what her pictures would express. She asked all her models to move as gracefully as possible, as she herself did in Self-portrait (fig. 86). “I wanted the movements to be elegant. But I also wanted there to be power in them. They had to feel what they were doing.” Being under water is like being in another world for Hoogendijk. It is a place that feels like her dreams, full of mystery, movement and stillness. And it is precisely that moment of ultimate tranquillity that she tries to capture in her photographs.

would be accepted in Mexico’s Catholic society. But the Mexicans were perfectly accepting, for her nudes are surrounded by water, symbol of purity. The symbolism of water is twofold. It is associated with life and fertility, but also with sin and death. Water is regarded as the source of life, healing and cleansing. When a child is baptised, it is inducted into a new way of life, entering into the faith. The water used in the ceremony symbolises the renunciation of the old and of evil, as rebirth signifies the new and the good. Hoogendijk’s water scenes have a personal symbolism that is consistent with the individualisation of twenty-first-century art. But the traditional interpretation of water as a reflection of the soul and symbol of purity is also there.

Waxing moon Water flows. It comes and goes, like the moon in the night. It is a recurring thread running through Hoogendijk’s photographic work. In her underwater images, in The Meetings of the Waters (figs. 6, 8-22) and in The Art of Love (figs. 115-118, 121-127, 130) water is the key feature, as it is in The World Is Your Oyster (fig. 91). Just as her photographs are selfportraits, Hoogendijk is also the water in her images. Without necessarily giving credence to the belief that the position of the heavenly bodies determines human fate, but also without any wish to dismiss astrology as hocus-pocus, it is a fact that Hoogendijk’s star sign is Cancer. Cancerians are said to be creative, imaginative and empathetic. It is regarded as one of the most emotional signs in the zodiac. Those born under the sign of the crab are characterised as open, intuitive and sensitive, and are associated with water, the moon and, due to the link with the planet Venus, with the symbolism of the female.

astrologie als sterrenwichelarij te bestempelen, is het een vaststaand gegeven dat Hoogendijks astrologische teken ‘kreeft’ is. Degenen die kreeft als sterrenbeeld hebben, zouden creatief en fantasierijk zijn en een goed inlevingsvermogen en sterke verbeeldingskracht hebben.

Een kreeft wordt gezien als één van de meest emotionele tekens van de dierenriem. Het karakteriseert haar dragers als open, intuïtief en gevoelig en wordt geassocieerd met water, de maan en, door de koppeling van het sterrenbeeld aan de planeet Venus, met de symboliek van het vrouwelijke.

In Moonlight uit 2014, één van Hoogendijks lievelingsfoto’s, zijn al deze elementen terug te vinden (afb. 87). “Deze foto is met maanlicht, in het donker gemaakt. In de luchtbellen herken ik het universum. Het is de sterrenhemel onder water. Dus eigenlijk zie je hier wat daar is.” Hoogendijk spiegelt de nachtelijke hemel in het donkere water. De naaktheid van de weergegeven vrouw licht daarbij op als een maansikkel in de duisternis.

Haar houding is zeer sierlijk en uitermate feminien. “Ik hou van het fluïde van water. Daarbij is water heel vrouwelijk. De vrouwen in mijn waterfoto’s stellen zich zeer kwetsbaar op, zoals alleen vrouwen dat kunnen. Daar komt ook hun kracht uit voort. Of ik mezelf in hen zie? Ja, dat denk ik wel.

Net zoals ik ook wil dat mijn houding zo veranderlijk en beweeglijk is als water.”

Onderstroom Undertow

Symbiose Hoogendijks zoektocht naar symbiose kleurt de foto’s zie zij maakte in 2016. Met Danser dans l’Eau, een serie van negen foto’s, drukt ze de kracht van samenwerking tussen vrouwen uit (afb. 89). “Deze reeks gaat over de verfijndheid van de relatie tussen vrouwen. Ze kunnen elkaar ook naar het leven staan, maar toch weten ze elkaar te versterken.” Ze vroeg twee vriendinnen om in haar zwembad voor haar te poseren. “Ik wilde dat ze met elkaar een verhaal vertellen over aantrekken en afstoten.” Voor Hoogendijk symboliseren deze foto’s de samenkomst van twee vrouwen die in hun streven naar acceptatie en goedkeuring elkaar aftasten in een wervelende onderwaterdans.

In Clashing of Two Worlds uit 2016 laat Hoogendijk de mannelijke en de vrouwelijke wereld samenkomen in eenzelfde spel van vasthouden en loslaten (afb. 88). De weergegeven vrouw houdt haar bekken vlak onder het – gekantelde – wateroppervlak. Deze botsing met een muur van water hult haar in een stroom van luchtbellen. Voor Hoogendijk is dit de vrouw die haar orgasme beleeft. “Het is wat ik begeer, wat ik nodig heb en wat ik wil van een man. Maar het is ook moeilijk om met een man te zijn, vind ik. Want we zijn ook heel anders, mannen en vrouwen.” In Clashing of Two Worlds stelt zij een seksueel hoogtepunt voor als de ultieme vorm van bevrijding.

De kracht van water Selfportrait uit 2016 is Hoogendijks schreeuw om vrijheid (afb. 86).

De emotionele kwelling die zij hier uitdrukt, doet haar denken aan het schilderij De Schreeuw van de Noorse kunstenaar Edvard Munch uit 1893. Waar Munch in de golvende lijnen op zijn doek geluid suggereert, is op Hoogendijks foto geen enkele uitroep te zien. Haar lichaam drijft onder water terwijl haar gezicht zich onzichtbaar boven het wateroppervlak begeeft, kijkend naar de andere kant. Hoogendijk wil ergens doorheen breken en haar schreeuw resoneert in de weerkaatsing van haar lichaam in het deinende water. Ze portretteert zichzelf krachtig en kwetsbaar en, in haar roep naar het nieuwe, ook als nieuwsgierig. Dezelfde symboliek toont ze in Water Windows uit 2019 (afb. 90). Hoogendijk heeft ramen geplaatst bij een door water omhulde vrouw. Ze heeft haar gesitueerd op de bodem van een door God vergeten en door alles en iedereen verlaten plek.

Eenzaam en stil zit zij, met haar blik gericht op de vensters. De vergezichten die zij daar ziet weerspiegelen de beloftes die Hoogendijk voelt bij elke keuze die zij maakt en bij elke stap die zij zet.

Het samengaan van kracht en vrijheid is ook zichtbaar in de serie The Meetings of the Waters uit 2019 (afb. 6, 8-22). Naakt en water zijn hier onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Voor Hoogendijk zijn haar zeegodinnen een metafoor voor vrijheid en bevrijding. “The Meetings of the Waters symboliseert voor mij de ontmoeting tussen de mens en het water. Het water ziet de mens en de mens vloeit mee met de stroom van het water. De mens is vrij van het land en van alle invloeden. De mens is naakt en vrij.” In haar foto’s drukt Hoogendijk uit hoe water haar tegelijkertijd geborgenheid en vrijheid geeft en hoe de oneindigheid van de onderstroom haar telkens blijft vervullen.

All these elements can be seen in Moonlight from 2014, one of Hoogendijk’s favourite photographs. “This photo was taken in moonlight, in the dark. I can see the universe in the air bubbles. It’s a starry sky under water. So in fact you see right here what is out there.” The night sky is reflected in the dark water. The naked body of the woman in the image lights up like a crescent moon in the darkness. Her posture is very elegant and extremely feminine. “I love the fluidity of water. And water is very feminine. The women in my water photos are all very vulnerable, as only women can be. That is also their strength.

Do I see myself in them? Yes, I think I do. Just as I want my position to be as mutable and dynamic as water.”

Symbiosis Hoogendijk’s quest for symbiosis coloured the photographs she took in 2016. Danser dans l’Eau, a series of nine images, is about the power of collaboration between women (fig. 89).

“This series concerns the sophistication of the relationship between women. They may be at loggerheads, but they still manage to reinforce one another.” She asked two friends to pose for her in her pool. “I wanted them to tell a story of attraction and repulsion.” To Hoogendijk the pictures symbolise the coming together of two women who, in their quest for acceptance and approval, test each other in a swirling underwater dance.

In Clashing of Two Worlds from 2016 Hoogendijk brings the male and female worlds together in a similar game of holding on and letting go (fig. 88). The woman in the image holds her pelvis just beneath the tilted surface of the water.

This clash with a wall of water wraps her in a flood of air bubbles. For Hoogendijk, this is a woman in the throes of orgasm. “It’s what I desire, what I need and want from a man.

But it’s also difficult to be with a man, I find, because we’re very different, men and women.” In Clashing of Two Worlds she presents a sexual climax as the ultimate form of liberation.

The power of water Self-portrait of 2016 is a cry for freedom (fig. 86). The emotional torment Hoogendijk expresses here reminds her of The Scream by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, painted in 1893. While Munch suggests sound in the undulating lines on the canvas, there is no exclamation in Hoogendijk’s photograph. Her body floats under the water but her face is above the surface, unseen, looking to the other side.

Hoogendijk is seeking to break through something and her scream resonates in the reflection of her body in the water.

She portrays herself as strong and vulnerable, and as curious, crying out for the new. She uses the same symbolism in Water Windows of 2019 (fig. 90), which shows a woman under water with a row of windows behind her. She sits at the bottom of a godforsaken, abandoned place, still and alone, her eyes averted, looking towards the windows. The distant views she cannot see reflect the promises Hoogendijk feels every time she makes a choice or takes a step in a certain direction.

The combination of strength and freedom can also be seen in the 2019 series The Meetings of the Waters (figs. 6, 8-22).

Nakedness and water are inextricably linked in these images.

The curves of the female body are reflected in the ripple lines on the sea bed. To Hoogendijk, her naked sea goddesses are a metaphor for freedom and liberation. “To me, The Meetings of the Waters symbolises the encounter between humans and water. The water sees the human being, and the human being flows with the currents in the water. The human being is free of the land and any influences. The human being is naked and free.” Hoogendijk shows in her pictures how water gives her a sense both of security and of freedom, and how the eternal undertow fulfils her time and again.

8 Sterrenstof Stardust “The world is your oyster.” Dat is wat Gine Hoogendijk dikwijls tegen haar dochter zei, ‘de wereld is jouw oester’. Daarmee wees zij op de oneindigheid aan mogelijkheden die het leven kan bieden en de grenzeloze vrijheid die daarmee gepaard gaat.

Hoogendijk leerde dat het haar ervaringen, ontmoetingen en kennis zijn die haar maken tot wie zij is. Ze is dat wat ze heeft gezien, gevoeld, gelezen en gehoord. En daaruit komen haar verbeeldingskracht en dromen voort, haar grootste vermogen en de onbegrensde bron waaruit zij als kunstenaar eindeloos put. Hoogendijk noemt het infinity en koestert de ruimte die het haar geeft.

“The world is your oyster” Gine Hoogendijk would often say to her daughter, referring to the infinite possibilities life brings, and the boundless freedom that goes with that. Hoogendijk has learned that it is her experiences, encounters and knowledge that have made her what she is. She is what she has seen, felt, read and heard. And that is where her imagination and her dreams originate, her greatest assets and the unlimited source from which she endlessly draws as an artist. Hoogendijk calls it infinity and she cherishes the space it gives her to create.

The World Is Your Oyster I-VIII, 2016

Oester “The world’s your oyster” is een Engelse uitdrukking die gebaseerd is op de zinsnede “The world’s mine oyster” uit het toneelstuk The Merry Wives of Windsor van Shakespeare. Waar het oorspronkelijk verwijst naar het verkrijgen van geld op een onhebbelijke manier, wordt het tegenwoordig gebruikt als metafoor voor de rijkdom van het leven. Daarmee wordt niet gedoeld op materiële welvaart, maar juist op de overvloed aan vooruitzichten en kansen die het leven je kan geven: het leven als zoektocht naar geluk.

Gine Hoogendijk moedigde haar dochter aan altijd op zoek te gaan naar de parel. Zij gaf Hoogendijk mee dat de wereld aan haar voeten ligt en dat keuze hebben de ultieme vorm van vrijheid is. “Zij heeft mij opgevoed met het rotsvaste vertrouwen dat ik kan zijn wie ik wil zijn, en dat de wereld mijn oester is”, omschreef Hoogendijk in 2017 in Through the Eyes of Others haar moeders zienswijze. “Ze heeft me geleerd dat ik anders mag zijn en dat ik niet hetzelfde pad hoef te bewandelen als zoveel anderen. Dat ik mag liefhebben en ophouden met liefhebben, dat ik kan leren door fouten te maken.” Gine Hoogendijk opende de wereld voor haar dochter, die zij zowel vol vrees als onbevreesd inging.

Oyster “The world’s your oyster” is an English expression based on the line “The world’s mine oyster” from The Merry Wives of Windsor by Shakespeare. Though it originally referred to obtaining money by disreputable means, it is used nowadays as a metaphor for the richness of life, not in material terms, but in terms of the abundance of prospects and opportunities it can bring. Life as a quest for happiness. Gine Hoogendijk always encouraged her daughter to look for the pearl. She taught her that she has the world at her feet, and that having choices is the ultimate freedom. “She raised me with a firm conviction that I can be who I want to be, and that the world’s my oyster” was how Hoogendijk described her mother’s views in Through the Eyes of Others in 2017. “She taught me that I could be different and I didn’t need to follow the same path as so many others. That I could love and stop loving, that I could learn by making mistakes.” Gine Hoogendijk opened up the world for her daughter, who fearfully and fearlessly stepped out into it.

Hoogendijk chose to celebrate life and she has succeeded in transforming her strength and vulnerability

into images, as in The World Is Your Oyster. This 2016 series shows the same face eight times, created by merging two faces: that of a woman and that of a man (fig.

91). Hoogendijk created an androgynous person with eyes behind which an entire world might lie and skin as delicate as porcelain. The contours of an oyster cover the head as if they were a veil, sliding before the eyes like a mask, the mother-of-pearl inside the shell leaving behind a tear. This is Hoogendijk’s personification of a human being become one, who carries in them both joy and pain – two extremes that are inextricably linked. She depicts life, which always gives you a choice: carry on or break, use your strength or be paralysed by uncertainty, be strong or let in the fear, stand still or move forward. The eye of the viewer makes the connection. As we look at Hoogendijk’s work we connect with her emotions, and at the same time we feel our own.

Hoogendijk heeft ervoor gekozen het leven te vieren en zij slaagt erin haar kracht en kwetsbaarheid om te zetten naar beelden, zoals in The World Is Your Oyster. Deze fotoserie uit 2016 toont acht keer hetzelfde gelaat dat ontstond door twee gezichten samen te smelten: dat van een vrouw en dat van een man (afb. 91). Hoogendijk creëerde een androgyne mens, met ogen waarachter je een hele wereld vermoedt en een huid breekbaar als porselein. De contouren van een oester bedekken het hoofd en omgeven het als een sluier, een transparante voile die als een masker voor de ogen schuift, waarbij het parelmoer van de schelp een traan achterlaat. Dit is Hoogendijks personificatie van de één geworden mens die vreugde en pijn in zich draagt, twee uitersten die onlosmakelijk aan elkaar verbonden zijn. Zij stelt hier het leven voor dat je altijd twee keuzes geeft: ga je door of breek je?

Ga je in je kracht staan of in je onzekerheid? Sta je sterk of sta je je angsten toe? Sta je stil of ga je verder? Het oog van de beschouwer zorgt vervolgens voor verbinding: door te kijken naar Hoogendijks werk verbind je je met haar emoties en voel je tegelijkertijd je eigen gemoed.
