New Year, New Faces The Department is very pleased to welcome four new residents and two Head & Neck Oncology Microvascular Reconstruction fellows to the OMS Team. Dr. Gomez joins us from NYU and is completing her non-categorical intern year with us, Dr. Kashat recently completed a non-categorical year with one of our own alumni, Dr. Carlos Ramirez, at St. John’s Hospital in southeast Michigan, Dr. Nocella completed her non-categorical year with us last year, and Dr. Thomson joins us from Georgia. In the fellow class, Dr. Quimby recently completed her residency with us, and Dr. Fleissig joins us from Israel. We are happy to have all of them on board and looking forward to what they bring to the team.

GRADUATION AND VISITING PROFESSORS Resident and Fellow Graduation Highlights the End of a Great Academic Year The UF College of Medicine held its formal residency and fellowship graduation on June 12, 2019. There we celebrated the accomplishments of our three graduating chief residents, Abigail Estelle, MD, DDS, Kyle McCaskey, MD, DDS and Anastasiya Quimby, MD, DDS. Also during the commencement, our graduating fellows from the Head and Neck Microvascular Program, John Collin, MD, DDS and Benjamin Turner, MD, and Pediatric Craniofacial Fellowship Program, Daniel Schlieder, MD, DDS, also received certificates for completion of their training.

Dr. Estelle, who also won the Best Chief Resident Teacher Award, is now in academic practice at Tauranga Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Bay of Plenty District Hospital, Tauranga, New Zealand. Dr. McCaskey has taken a position in private practice in Tampa, FL. Dr. Quimby has taken one of the Head and Neck Microvascular Fellowship positions in our own program, the first female in the role. As for the fellows, Dr. Schlieder is now in academic practice at San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio, TX; Dr. Collin has return to England and is in academic practice at Bristol Royal Infirmary, University of Bristol Hospitals NHS Trust; and Dr. Turner has returned to British Columbia to practice.

A formal departmental graduation party with staff, friends and family was held on Saturday, June 22nd at The River Club. Dr. Klaus-Dietrich Wolff, keynote speaker, gave a wonderful lecture.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY EFFORTS Over 100 Patients Consented to Participate in Head and Neck Databank Over the last few year, the Department has been developing a patient databank in the effort to collect outcomes on malignant diseases of the head and neck. The goal is to collect data on patient demographics, H&P info, and disease specific progression in an effort build a research database leading to studies that can provide future patients with more answer on why these diseases progress the way that they do.

With approval from UF IRB and finalization of data collection points in place, we began communicating with patients about the databank and seeking their consent to include them in the system. Since the beginning of 2019 we have enrolled over 100 patients and continue to build on that number weekly. We look forward to sharing and publishing work based on this data collection with you soon.

Craniofacial Study Received Dean’s Research Grant Children born with cleft clip and palate often have a cleft defect of their alveolar bone. This necessitates bone graft augmentation between the ages of 7-10 years old to allow developing teeth to erupt into healthy bone rather than a cleft defect. This past June, members of our team including residents Jennifer Dolan, DDS, MPH, Phillip Barbee, MD, DDS, Abigail Estelle, MD, DDS, and Daniel Schlieder, MD, DDS, mentored by Barry Steinberg, MD, PhD, DDS, FACS, received the Dean’s Fund Research Award Grant for their study entitled “Outcomes of Alveolar Cleft Bone Graft Density and Volume Using Anterior Iliac Crest Autograft Versus rhBMP-2 and Allograft.”

Funds from the grant will be used to complete virtual surgical planning sessions and compare the bone density and volumes achieved by conventional anterior iliac crest bone grafting and compare it to that achieved with rh-BMP and allograft.

Jax OMS Represented Worldwide at Conferences This past academic year, our residents presented work at national and international conferences more than ever before. As the number and scope of research projects underway in the department grows, residents from all years are generating abstracts accepted for both oral presentation and poster presentation platforms.

Faculty Scholarly Honors and Accomplishments This year, the Dr. Roger M. Hehn Award for excellence in teaching in oral & maxillofacial surgery was presented to Howard Schare, DDS. The award is given annually to the faculty member in OMS who exemplifies the best qualities of a teacher to the residents and students in the field of OMS as demonstrated by Dr. Roger M. Hehn during his distinguished career.

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) sponsors the Faculty Educator Development Award (FEDA) each year. FEDA was developed to encourage promising young oral and maxillofacial surgeons to choose a long term faculty career in the specialty. This year our own Salam Salman, MD, DDS, FACS was one of the four recipients of the FEDA, which will be awarded at the 2019 Annual AAOMS Meeting in Boston.

Writing and editing a book is a great challenge for any academic.

Over the past two year Dr. Salman has worked on and accomplished just that, culminating in the publication of “Modern Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea� (Springer, New York, NY). The book also features chapters authored by OMS Faculty Dr. Anthony Bunnell, Tirbod Fattahi, Rui Fernandes and Barry Steinberg, as well as residents/fellows Dr. Rania Habib, Dr. Stacey Nedrud, Dr. Anastasiya Quimby, and Dr. Ashley Weyh.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Kristy Zanao, Residency and Fellowship Administrator Kristy Zanao joined the Department as the Residency and Fellowship Programs Administrator in early 2018. Before coming to UF she worked in Graduate Medical Education (GME) for almost 10 years, mostly in Internal Medicine programs at HCA Healthcare and University of Colorado.

Kristy has taken on the challenge of learning about OMS and the nuances of CODA accredited programs with ease. Her attention to detail and ability to connect with others makes her the ideal person to manage the complexities of a residency and fellowship based service.

“Kristy has done an amazing job with transitioning from a GME program to a CODA program. She is excellent with all of our residents/fellows and makes my job A LOT easier!”, said Dr. Salman, Residency Program Director.

Kristy’s drive for adventure has led her to reside in various states in the USA from coast to coast. She moved to Jacksonville, FL about 3 years ago. In her free time, Kristy enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, Val, and their daughter, Victoria.
