ADVANCING EDUCATION In a field with such variation among surgical cases, continuing medical education is an important piece of our practice. As academics and private practitioners alike, staying abreast of new technologies, techniques and trends allows us to provide the best care to our patients. To offer valuable educational events that meet these goals, our faculty have recently partnered with ACOMS to facilitate two well received training sessions.

In September 2018, Salam Salman, MD, DDS, FACS and Josh Lubek, MD, DDS (University of Maryland), co-directed a course titled “Management of Maxillofacial Soft Tissue Injuries.” This two-day hands-on didactic and laboratory cadaver course covered a wide range of maxillofacial soft tissue injuries, including airway management and periorbital and vascular injuries, enabling participants to perform procedures such as local tissue flap reconstruction, tissue expanders, and airway intervention.

In January 2019, Rui Fernandes, MD, DMD, FACS, FRCS partnered with Bryan Bell, MD, DDS, DACS, FACD (Providence Cancer Institute) to co-direct a two day course on “Exploring the Boundaries of Head and Neck Surgery”, providing the most up-to-date information on imaging, personalized medicine, radiation, medical oncology, and ablative and reconstructive surgery. The interactive and case-based educational sessions were attended by several of our residents, both Head and Neck fellows, various staff and alumni including Kyle Ettinger, MD, DDS, Mark Ogledzki, MD, DMD and Carlos Ramirez MD, DDS, FACS. Also in January 2019, Tirbod Fattahi, MD, DDS, FACS, Dr. Rui Fernandes and Dr. Salam Salman once again led the “UF Jacksonville Small Group Discussions in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.” This refresher course in which attendees participate in clinically relevant case presentations, is offered to all oral & maxillofacial surgeons, especially those in the process of obtaining board certification.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY HONORS Resident Receives Funding to Combat CT Overutilization in Odontogenic Infections A simple retrospective chart review has turned into quite the dynamic project for third year resident Ashleigh Weyh, DMD, MPH. Dr. Weyh, in collaboration with resident Evan Busby, DDS, originally sought out to research the rate of overutilization of computed tomography scans of odontogenic infections performed in the Emergency Department. The study looked at 470 patients over a 10 year period and revealed that 56.6% of CTs Dr. Ashleigh Weyh performed during were indeed unnecessary, most of which were prevalent in patients with low risk infections. The study also showed the need to work to establish guideline to standardize CT ordering due to the lack of uniformity among ordering providers, whether OMFS was consulted or not. The full results of this study were recently published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and can be found at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.joms.2018.10.025.

Weyh, et. al. have since collaborated with faculty from the Emergency Department to develop CT ordering guidelines based on the findings of the retrospective study. Dr. Weyh then applied for a recently received the Research Pilot Award from the University of Florida Clinical and Translational Science Institute (sponsored by NIH) to proceed with a prospective research study that will test the ordering pathway that they developed. The project will start this month and run for the next 1.5 years. A manuscript outlining the ordering pathway has also been submitted to the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Barry Steinberg Honored by Duval County Medical Society The Duval County Medical Society recently celebrated another successful year at their 166th Annual Meeting and Presidential Ball, held on December 1, 2018. At the event, the Clyde M. Collins Humanitarian Award went to our own Barry Steinberg, MD, DDS, PhD, FACS. As you know, Dr. Steinberg has been making contributions to humanitarian surgical work, military service and community service for over 20 years including founding the Facing Futures Foundation and serving as a Reserve Officer, Medical Advisor and member of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. We congratulate Dr. Steinberg on this well deserved honor.

Dr. Salman Named Fellow Member of the American College of Surgeons This past October, Dr. Salman Salman joined the 2018 initiate class and became a Fellow Member in the American College of Surgeons. As is well known in this field, the title FACS indicates that “the surgeon's education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards set by the College.” Congratulations to Dr. Salman on this important professional recognition.

GRADUATION AND VISITING PROFESSORS Annual Graduation Celebration The Department will celebrate the graduation of our current chief residents, Abigail Estelle, MD, DDS, Kyle McCaskey, MD, DDS and Anastasiya Quimby, MD, DDS, and fellows, John Collin, MD, DDS, Daniel Schlieder, MD, DDS and Benjamin Turner, MD, with dinner and dancing on Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 6:00pm – 11:00pm at the River Club.

Dr. Klaus-Dietrich Wolf

The keynote speaker at the event will be Klaus-Dietrich Wolff, MD, DDS, PhD, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Medicine, Technische Universität München and Immediate Past President of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Wolff researches in the area of plastic reconstructive facial surgery. The aim of his research work is to improve the microsurgical transfer of tissue through a better understanding of the construction, physiology and healing of tissue transplants. His main focus is on the development of an extracorporal oxygenation and perfusion system and the clinical establishment of perforator flaps to replace soft tissue.

With such wonderful views and company, we hope that each of you will be able to attend and celebrate another round of graduates becoming our colleagues. Formal invitations will be sent in the coming months, so be on the lookout. We look forward to celebrating with the whole OMFS family.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Audrey O. Misel, PA-C Just over one year ago, the department hired a new Physician Assistant, Audrey O’Keefe Misel, PA-C, to join the Division of Head and Neck Oncology. Audrey has quickly made herself an integral part of the team by providing comprehensive care to our H&N patients in our outpatient clinic.

Audrey was born and raised in the Tampa area. She received her B.S. in Health Sciences and Master of Medical Science from Mercer University in Macon and Atlanta, Georgia. Audrey is a member of the American Academy and Florida Academy of Physician Assistants, and is certified through the National Commission on Audrey O. Misel, PA-C Certification of Physician Assistants. Prior to accepting her position in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UF Health, she spent 3 years in the practice of ear, nose and throat medicine in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where she treated patients in the clinic and assisted in surgeries. Audrey is happy to be back in her home state and an honorary Florida Gator.

When not in clinic, Audrey enjoys spending time with her husband Jay, a PA in private practice, and their beloved dog Larry. They recently purchased a beautiful home in the San Jose area and are enjoying making it their own. Besides her family activities, Audrey enjoys playing soccer and exploring all the best that Jacksonville has to offer.
