MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

2020 was a year of worldwide challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, Universidad de las Américas Puebla reinvented itself to guarantee the institution’s sustainability, diversifying and using resources efficiently to retain personnel, maintaining the levels of investment in technology and facilities, and extending financial support for students. Organizational units innovated different processes, adapting current activities to contribute to UDLAP’s mission and vi-

sion and continue to be the best private university in Mexico. Without a doubt, the actions implemented backed our institutional prestige while maintaining the academic quality that characterizes our university. For this reason, on this occasion the annual report is aligned with the key objectives defined in the strategic plan that allow us to meet the university’s guidelines, mission, and vision.

FINANCIAL STABILITY

One of the university’s strategic objectives is financial stability. Thanks to the efficient use of resources in previous years, we could respond assertively and quickly in 2020. Doubtless, UDLAP not only was able to maintain healthy financials

that guarantee the continuity of academic quality, creation of alternatives for students, and preservation of jobs, but also made important investments in technology, facilities, and sanitary protocols to benefit all members of the UDLAP.

Financial Situation

The institution’s financial statements for 2020 (in auditing process) and 2019 (audited) reflect the solid financial stability of the University, even for this complicated year due to the COVID-19 sanitary crisis.

There are positive relations in the ability to cover shortterm debt with current assets, while having net positive working capital. Cash and equivalents represent 127% of short-term debt. Considering the solidity of the financial situation and its sound administration, banks have given UDLAP their vote of confidence, providing several credit lines that total 540 million pesos, which allowed the

university to respond opportunely and adequately to student’s financial needs, as well as pandemic-related products and equipment. In December 2020, the credit balance was 528.3 million pesos.

The 2020 EBIDTA was a net loss of 63.2 million pesos, a lesser amount than was expected because of the pandemic. Even though we lost complementary income from colleges, lottery, and others, we reduced the economic impact because the income from our main activity, tuition, improved due to increased enrollment and we controlled costs and expenses. It is important to point out that the financial statements are audited every year by a prestigious firm, which has issued an opinion without comments every year.

Financial SuStainability

The world economic situation has motivated us to establish support plans for students’ families, keeping the same tuition and increasing scholarships, thus receiving 2,953 new students for licenciatura and graduate studies from Puebla, Veracruz, Mexico State, and Mexico City.

We also established a cautious expense policy that contemplated drafting operation plans that allows the institution to maintain academic quality and efficient services. In this period, the achievements were:

► Student enrollment was maintained at over 9,500 students on average between Spring and Fall.

► 80% of new students enrolled in licenciatura, and 20% in graduate studies.

► Net income from training and consulting was 8.4 million pesos.

► We formed strategic alliances, adding over 11 million pesos in sponsorships and donations.

► A total of 290,000 Sorteo UDLAP tickets were issued, of which 285,000 were printed and 5,000 were electronic.

► The sale of Sorteo UDLAP tickets and promotion was carried out nationwide, especially in the central and southern states with the participation of over 18,600 collaborators that included students, employees, and the general public.

► Sorteo UDLAP, duly registered and supervised by the Secretary of the Interior, raised 129 million pesos gross revenue. We delivered 630 awards with a value of 57 million pesos.

Financial aid ProgramS

Understanding the economic uncertainty derived from the pandemic, the university created programs that have provided financial support to students and collaborators.

► From Fall 2020, we granted 249 UDLAP Contigo education credits to support students who were affected economically.

► Sorteo UDLAP aided over 77% new and returning students, approximately 7,380 students who have some type of scholarship.

KEEPING THE SAME TUITION AND INCREASING SCHOLARSHIPS, THUS RECEIVING

2,953 NEW STUDENTS FOR LICENCIATURA AND GRADUATE STUDIES

► To face the financial aid requirements of our student community (scholarships and credits), we acquired credit lines with several banks for 540 million pesos.

► We implemented free food-service for employees who had to come to campus, as a bonus due to the sanitary emergency.

technology

To continue to excel in academics, we developed the “Hybrid UDLAP” model which lets students attend classes virtually and on campus. We equipped all the classrooms and labs so practices could be recorded and consulted by students online.

Working from home made technology the main tool to continue the university’s operations, so we had to adapt in a short period of time to offer innovative solutions with quality and warmth. The most relevant actions are:

► The faculty designed 2,000 licenciatura courses on the LMS platform for Fall 2020, including learning modules and multimedia resources for students.

► The 2020 Technological Master Plan included projects related to adapting information systems for financial and human resource management, contemplating training processes required to prepare users on their application.

► We redesigned and implemented an institutional continuity process that allows 5 critical systems to operate in case the data center is unavailable.

► We lowered the UDLAP community reported security incidents to fewer than 15 by incorporating commitment indicators to the security management system.

► 400 people attended the online course on information security.

► The Information Technology Department increased by 30% the reach of information security awareness campaigns, compared to 2019.

► We changed the safeguard of mobile and radiocommunication equipment to an electronic signature platform.

► UDLAP Consultores’ training programs were taught online using Zoom, Blackboard, Telmex, and Microsoft Teams.

► Zoom, Teams, and Telmex Videoconferences were used for 1,200 university online events.

FacilitieS

As part of its strategic guidelines, UDLAP is committed to having vanguard facilities and, even though activities were online, we continued to maintain the campus and make adaptations to meet the regulations established by the authorities for prevention and attention protocols for the community because of the pandemic. Among the facilities projects are:

► Construction of 6 infiltration wells with collection systems that direct rainwater to aquifers, helping to maintain the hydrological level of the area and avoid floods on campus.

► We received from the verifying authorities an outstanding evaluation of the electric and gas installations and the equipment subject to pressure.

► We remodeled the Physical Plant’s electrical substation, changing equipment that was over 25 years old, guaranteeing the correct operation and security of illumination systems, pumping equipment, and administrative buildings such as Human Resources and Physical Plant.

► We accomplished 85% of the Yearly Maintenance Plan in the three areas of hydraulics, electricity, and infrastructure.

► We complied with 2,283 (85%) orders out of the 2,675 ones created by the 7070 system for user areas.

► We gave preventive maintenance to 90% of the university fleet.

The pandemic brought different challenges for the institution, prompting the design of action plans to protect employees and students; thus, aligned with official regulations, we purchased personal protection equipment, designed safe spaces by disinfecting all areas and furniture, and provided health services to all who required them through specific COVID-19 protocols.

► We increased the number of Residential College rooms to over 1,200 by including the Macías Rendón building, an investment close to 40 million pesos.

► We installed open study spaces on campus.

► We prepared the campus buildings, creating a COVID-19 medical attention area, open air study spaces in the Agora, improving ventilation, redistributing furniture and equipment to avoid contact (partitions,

hand dryers, soap dispensers, and trashcans), installing signs to promote good practices, and others.

► We traced routes to avoid cross-traffic of people, installing mosquito nets in classroom windows for better ventilation, and installing physical barriers in the reception area of all residential colleges.

► We purchased furniture and medical equipment for the second floor of Medical Services and an autoclave for sterilization. To complement the disinfection of academic labs, we purchased cabinets with UV lamps, as well as portable UV lamps and four thermographic cameras in the highest-traffic areas.
