LEND A HAND

You probably remember how the first semester of university is both an exciting and challenging time.

If you’re in your third year or higher and in good academic standing, you can mentor one or more junior Science students through their university experience while building your leadership and mentoring skills.

You can make a difference for 1st and 2nd year students by connecting them to resources on campus, supporting study schedules, introducing them to new friends, and more.

THE SPECIFICS

The time commitment needed to enrich your mentee’s university experience — and your own — is probably less than you’d think!

As a mentor, you’d be asked to commit to:

• Mentorship training and resources

• Monthly meetings between you and your mentee

• Attending social and professional development events

My mentee started off his first semester with feeling a little uneasy and overwhelmed with university, but he gradually became more and more comfortable throughout the semester. I could see his confidence grow over time, and I was positively surprised with his swift transition into university.

I can see him excelling in his degree, and I am very happy to see him getting involved in the campus community as well.”

Sharon, 3rd year mentor.

START YOUR ADVENTURE

The application process is easy — the hard part is deciding where to go!

We partner with universities, corporations, not for-profit agencies, and small businesses to open up your university experience beyond our campus. Enhancing your degree by studying abroad will enrich your life, open your mind, help make you a global contender in the job market, and give you an edge on grad school applications.

MAKE IT HAPPEN

If you’re an undergraduate student in good academic standing entering your second or third year of full-time studies, you’re eligible to apply.

When you start the application process, you’ll meet with a Faculty of Science advisor, who will work with you to plan out your goals and your trip. Whether you’re interested in an exchange program, a group study program, or an international internship, our advisors will guide and support you at every phase of the process.

TAKE YOUR PLACE IN THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY

Good news! We have supports that take away some of the obstacles that you’d think might hold you back from studying abroad.

Students who plan to travel internationally can spend a few weeks up to a full academic year studying abroad. However you choose to internationalize your degree, you will gain valuable global leadership experience by immersing yourself in a different culture and by building a network of colleagues and friends from around the globe.

Studying abroad is more affordable than you might think. You don’t have to pay foreign student fees to the host university; instead, regular tuition fees are paid to UCalgary. You are responsible for airfare, food, residence fees/rent, books and personal expenses. A number of study abroad scholarships are available to help you finance your experience.

Even if English is your primary language, it won’t hold you back! You can study in English in your field, even in many non-English speaking countries. A number of programs offer language learning options at basic and intermediate levels — or take advantage of an intensive language learning opportunity through an immersion experience.
