s a company, Knowledge to Action has always believed in empowering people through education. Knowledge to Action is Europe’s largest trader-coaching company and specialises in teaching people to trade foreign exchange. Employing 150 people worldwide with offices in London, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Sydney, their success has been highlighted when they won the 2012 World Finance award for Best FX Education Provider, a finalist position in the 2010 London Excellence Awards and claimed 49th place in the 2010 Sunday Times Fast Track 100 Awards. The company tagline, “Skills for a Richer Life”, embodies the belief that with the right tools and strategies anyone can overcome adversity to reach their full potential. This doesn’t just apply to the customers learning to trade but also to the children Knowledge to Action support through their foundation. The Knowledge to Action Foundation was set up in 2010 with the aim of improving the lives of disadvantaged children. The founders, Katherine Scott

and Greg Secker, wanted to make sure they were giving back to the local community in South Africa and fell in love with a charity doing ground breaking

work in Port Elizabeth. The Ubuntu Education Fund (www.ubuntufund.org) provides world-class health, educational and psychological support to children who have been orphaned, abused or raped in the townships of Port Elizabeth. Their aim is to transform the lives of 2,000 children from cradle to career. Thanks to the support of The Knowledge to Action Foundation, Ubuntu launched their Early Childhood Development Program, Positive Start, in February. The initiative builds upon Ubuntu’s educational services, impacting an age group that they have not yet reached—toddlers. Research shows that the early years are crucial in a child’s development, and now 40 eager two- and three-year-olds have access to services that range from an internationally recognized curriculum to time spent in the sun growing vegetables. The ECD launched in February 2012 and has already given 43 children the opportunity to be involved with reading, writing, singing, art, movement and story-time, three days per week. 2012 marked Ubuntu’s second full year of operations in the Ubuntu Centre, their state-of-the-art, 25,000 square foot educational and health complex located in Zwide Township of Port Elizabeth. Today, the facility is bursting with activity—toddlers playing with building blocks while counting to ten in their Early Childhood Development classes, parents bringing their children to Ubuntu’s new paediatric clinic for medical checkups, and high school students quietly working on computers with their after-school mentors. The Centre continues to serve as a powerful reminder to Ubuntu’s children and their families that access to world-class education and healthcare is a right, not a privilege. The Ubuntu Centre’s paediatric clinic and pharmacy is the first of its kind for the region. The Department of

Health certified the clinic as a primary health facility, an antiretroviral drugs distribution site, and an accredited Tuberculosis (TB) and Preventing Mother-to-Children Transmission site. As such, Ubuntu now provides regular medical consultations, life-saving vaccines, HIV and TB testing and treatment, dental and vision

screenings, as well as psychosocial counselling to clients all free of charge. Ubuntu has just launched a three-year fundraising campaign by using the power of our interconnectedness. Ubuntu is U.ME.WE. The campaign aims to foster long-term financial stability, building Ubuntu’s institutional sustainability and creating a six month funding surplus. This is an essential to their ability to serve their community to the standard they deserve. On 17th May, 360 of London’s business, music and philanthropic leaders came together for a sensational gala dinner evening featuring stellar musical performances, a live auction and moving stories from Ubuntu Scholar and staff member. £550,000 was raised at this annual event, which was co-chaired by Katherine Scott and Greg Secker.
