Welcome to the September issue of the UBU and TJM newsletter
Welcome all to the Autumn 2024 newsletter!
This newsletter is collaboration between 2 of our excellent year in industry staff, who have selected UBU to give them a practical insight into working in the construction and plant hire industry in the North West.
As a family business I always feel that we offer a multitude of areas of experiences to our students covering accounts, health and safety, compliance and environmental awareness.
As part of our environmental commitments UBU have been working on another project to help identify our carbon footprint. This was another project with the team at MMU and in the next few months we hope to have an impact assessment to enable us to reduce our carbon and align ourselves with the Greater Manchester Net Zero target of 2038.
As a company we are already doing so much, but there is always scope to do more, and its with this in mind that UBU will be doing a local littler collection to improve the area which we live and work in .. If you can join us on the 18th September then please get in touch with Ajaz or Thomas via marketing@ubusweepers.co.uk.
We hope that you enjoy the newsletter and we always welcome your contributions so please get in touch if you have a story to share or a cause to support .. This is your newsletter.
Have a lovely day

New analysis of Government road casualty data, conducted by Brake for Road Safety Week 2023, reveals that road deaths in collisions involving heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) all increased between 2021 and 2023 by 6%. We kindly remind you to please drive safely.
As a friendly reminder, we urge our drivers to be mindful of the noise, particularly, between the hours of 9 pm and 8 am Below, we have outlined some measures to ensure UBU and TJM maintain harmonious relationships with others:
SOUND ONLY WHEN NECESSARY
Before leaving the depot, it's important that you all plan your route, allowing enough time to reach your destination. This can help prevent the need for you to stop and look for directions on your way.
As much as we encourage all of our employees to take breaks when needed, we also ask where possible to switch your engines off. This helps reduce any unnecessary noise and fuel consumption.
Below you can find rule 112 of the Highway Code. Please use informed judgement when sounding your horn. "When driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30pm and 7.00am, except when another road user poses a danger." Complete vehicle checks before leaving to avoid causing disturbance with your horn
Dear employee, Please make sure to check your emails and complete the docusign documents when they are sent to you. Please contact payroll@ubusweepers.co.uk if you have any questions
An early reminder that the next licence checks are in January - please send them to Payroll@ubusweepers.co.uk, failure to do so can result in a fixed penalty notice!
Please be aware that UBU operates a full defect reporting procedure and that you should NEVER carry out repairs on vehicles where you have not received the relevant training, information and instruction from a competent person.
UBU was alerted to an employee who thought they were doing the right thing by trying to fix a wagon issue on site and the results were catastrophic
After being alerted to low water levels they made a judgement based upon some reasonable assumptions that the vehicle had cooled down enough to enable them to top up the water
However after an initial turn of the cap, the boiling water came bubbling up to the surface resulting in serious burns for the employee. These injuries were treated at hospital and were very uncomfortable for the employee
We would remind you that in your induction training this scenario is specifically referred to –you should ALWAYS use the defect reporting procedure and ALWAYS wait a minimum of 45 minutes before opening the radiator once the wagon has been shut giving it plenty of time to cool. You should only carry out this procedure if instructed and competent Luckily the driver made a full recovery Please make sure you report all accidents and near misses.
As the summer days come to an end and trees begin to shed their leaves, drivers encounter a fresh array of obstacles on the road during autumn. Whether it's dealing with glare, in-car condensation, fog, frost, or strong winds, this page is a guide that will assist you in getting ready for any challenges presented by mother nature
Glare when the sun’s low in the sky is more likely to be a problem at this time of year. To improve vision, keep your windscreens cleaned and notify the garage if wiper blades are worn or damaged.
Autumn is a funny time of the year when it comes to weather, it is not uncommon to experience the weather f 4 seasons in one trip. With this in mind, please keep an eye on the forecast when planning your journey to sites.
When leaves blanket the road, especially when wet, the surface can be as slippery as driving on snow. It is crucial to exercise extreme caution in areas where leaves cover the pavement and to avoid sudden braking.
Autumn is the mating season for many wild animals that move around in herds and are more active. It's very important to slow down when driving on roads where there are signs warning of wildlife in the area.
VEHICLE
Drivers should take extra care when doing their vehicle checks, make sure that the brakes, exhaust, wipers, washer fluids and lights are all operational.
Staying hydrated is crucial for HGV drivers to prevent dehydration, which can lead to muscle weakness, headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. Dehydration can affect concentration levels, posing risks to both the driver and other road users. It is important for drivers to drink water regularly, especially during the summer months.
When there is ground frost on the road, traction is reduced. To stay safe, lower your speed, avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and make sure to clear frost from your windshield for better visibility.
During autumn, there are many distractions that can occur such as fireworks and loud celebrations. The common distractions include phones and loud music, the more your hand is off the wheel, the more chance of an accident!
TITLE: TARGET AUDIENCE:
INDUSTRY SECTOR: Jetting attachment injury
Any high pressure jetting activities
All staff, managers, customers and safety representatives
A very serious incident occurred last month involving an employee who was using a high pressure jetting attachment on a UBU tanker.
The employee was a competent and experienced employee who had undertaken the WJA training and held the appropriate card
The circumstances are that the hand lance was being used to clean a weighbridge and the lance dethatched from the hose. From our initial investigation it would appear that a component inside the lance fitting has sheard off, causing the high pressure water to fire out the metal component and this has impacted with the operative causing severe dental damage
A full investigation is still ongoing, with the manufacturers of the of the equipment now undertaking their own review of how the equipment failed
The potential risks of working with high pressure water can be fatal, and as such we are using this safety alert as an opportunity to remind all staff working with water at a high psi of the dangers and asking that you take time to review the RA and SSOW
We have also made an adjustment to the PPE being supplied to ensure that it provides the best protection for water at high impact including chin protection.
The operator must be trained and hold a current Water Jetting Association training card.
Equipment must be free from defects
A safe working area must be established to exclude members of public
The operator, or designated colleague, must have control of the emergency stop button (remote).
The operating pressure must be gradually increased.
A full face visor with chin protection, hard hat and gloves must all be worn
We are continuing to review and you may receive updated RA whilst we consider the response from the manufacturer of the jetting operation
Wear correct Hi-Vis at all times around the depot and on site.
On site, staff must wear re-enforced toe cap boots at all times. Trainers or rigger boots are not acceptable.
Wear correct PPE when carrying out daily tasks. For example goggles when jet washing.
We remind drivers to be mindful that alcohol CAN REMAIN IN YOUR SYSTEM MANY HOURS. If you are drinking in the evenings or when you are off work you should keep close track of your units. We would like to remind staff that as well as carrying out random alcohol testing, we also operate a ZERO TOLERANCE drugs policy.
Due to darker evenings in Autumn and the clocks moving being moved back 1 hour on the 27th October, we ask all drivers to use the correct vehicle lights to remain visible at all times.
FALLS FROM HEIGHT ARE A REAL RISK. Employees should NEVER climb on top of their wagon/vehicle/tanker/sweeper. The only employees who have received the relevant training an SSOW are the garage staff who have been trained to work at heights using the relevant equipment.
We remind staff that smoking is only permitted in the smoking areas provided. We also warn that electronic ciggerates can cause catastrophic damage when thrown into skips due to the batteries, please think before you throw away anything that contains batteries.
Please ensure that you empty all remaining water in the wet bay once you have finished your shift at UBU.
Drivers MUST check their vehicles regularly and report any damage/defects using the defect reporting procedure. Checking your wheel nuts is an essential part of this process.
All staff must also give way to other drivers when exiting the yard. You must look left and right to ensure other road users aren't at danger as you leave the yard. Also, All staff must follow the walkways on site at all times.
As the conditions get colder, we ask that employees take extra care and ensure that when wearing additional layers, they do not affect the visibility of your Hi-Vis clothing.
Do not leave washing and refuelling till the next day! Please refuel and wash vehicles after your shift.

Paul has been apart of the UBU cleaning team for 12 years and he has autism. We asked him a couple of questions about his experience with autism
Q1: How has your time been working for UBU for the past 12 years?
'I enjoy working at UBU because they are aware of my autism and make my working environment very comfortable. Another reason I enjoy working at UBU is because they always give me my favourite shortbread biscuits on my birthdays and Christmas!'
Q2: What does living with autism mean to you?
'I still don’t know how to explain my experience with autism but it’s something that I’m proud to be. Autism to me is about strength.'

CIEBIE I TWOJEGO SILNIKA
DŹWIĘK TYLKO
WTEDY, GDY
Pomaga to zmniejszyć niepotrzebny hałas i zużycie paliwa
Poniżej znajdziesz zasadę 112 Kodeksu Drogowego. Prosimy o świadomy osąd podczas używania klaksonu „Podczas jazdy w terenie zabudowanym w godzinach od 23:30 do 7:00, z wyjątkiem sytuacji, gdy inny użytkownik drogi stwarza zagrożenie”.
