Welcome to the June issue of the UBU and TJM newsletter
Welcome to the Summer edition of the UBU and TJM newsletter.
Since the last newsletter there has been a number of great achievements for the business.
We have enjoyed supporting some new local charities and been able to make a difference to some community initiatives. We look forward to strengthening these relationships with 'The Shed' and 'Walkden in Bloom' to help promote and support people living in the local areas of Walkden and Salford.
UBU has been fortunate to be involved in some high profile roadsweeping projects, and even had some Disney exposure after a UBU sweeper was seen in a tense nail biting scene from the 2025 thriller 'The Stolen Girl' ... Over the coming weeks and months we look forward to focussing on high levels of customer service and showcasing our exceptional fleet of roadsweepers and tankers to the construction and highways sector. UBU prides itself on gaining success and work through recommendation and networking, so if you see a site that you think needs the UBU touch, then always let the HireDesk know. We also have some business cards for you to hand out!
We hope that you all have a wonderful Summer, with some rain to keep the UBU sweepers busy and we hope you enjoy the newsletter.
Thanks again to Thomas for collating this information for all our team at UBU and TJM.
Warm regards,
Rebecca Murphy - Peers, Director
Speed is a critical factor in road safety, as nearly 60% of accidents are linked to excessive speed. As a professional driver, you must maintain appropriate speeds to prevent collisions and you must at all times foster safer driving standards.
Factors Affecting Speed Choices:
Fatigue, stress, and road rage
Weather and road conditions
Vehicle type and stopping distances
Distractions and medical conditions

As a business operating within a residential area we urge all drivers of company vans, vehicles and wagons to be mindful of noise, particularly, between the hours of 9 pm and 8 am. Below, we have outlined some measures to ensure UBU and TJM maintain harmonious relationships with others:
PLAN YOUR ROUTE AT THE DEPOT BREAK FOR YOU AND YOUR ENGINE
SOUND ONLY WHEN NECESSARY
Before leaving the depot, it's important that you all plan your route, allowing enough time to reach your destination. This is to prevent the need to pull in on Moss Lane or Sharp Street to review directions to your destination.
As much as we encourage all of our employees to take breaks when needed, we also ask where possible to switch your engines off. This helps reduce any unnecessary noise and fuel consumption.
Below you can find rule 112 of the Highway Code. Please use informed judgement when sounding your horn "when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30pm and 7.00am, except when another road user poses a danger." Complete vehicle checks before leaving to avoid causing disturbance with your horn

Dear employee, Please make sure to check your emails and complete the docusign documents when they are sent to you. Please contact payroll@ubusweepers.co.uk if you have any questions.
A reminder that the July licence checks are coming up - please send them to Payroll@ubusweepers.co.uk, failure to do so can result in a fixed penalty notice!

Please be reminded that UBU has a comprehensive defect reporting procedure in place, and you should NEVER attempt repairs on vehicles without having received the appropriate training, information, and instruction from a qualified individual.
Recently, UBU was notified about an employee who had an accident in the depot where he was trying to be helpful after having a hydraulic oil leak so he lifted the body of the sweeper, climbed on to the platform and started to jetwash the donkey engine to remove the oil
He slipped and fell off the sweeper, causing injury to his arm and back.
We want to remind you that this scenario is specifically mentioned during your induction training. You should ALWAYS follow the defect reporting procedure Only perform this action if you have been instructed and are deemed competent Fortunately, the driver made a full recovery Please ensure that all accidents and near misses are reported.
Safety is our top priority, and we urge you to remain vigilant and cautious at all times. Remember, your wellbeing is more important than any task, and following the correct procedures ensures not only your safety but also the safety of your colleagues
As we welcome the summer season, temperatures are climbing, and drivers should be mindful of various risks to ensure the safe operation of their vehicles.
During summer, increased road construction means more workers are present. Stay vigilant, reduce speed, and watch for workers near your vehicle to ensure safety in construction zones.
Drivers must exercise caution during their vehicle inspections, ensuring that the brakes, exhaust, wipers, washer fluids, and lights are all functioning properly
Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time for reaching their destination and to focus on using major road networks, as these routes are more likely to be less congested.
During the warmer months, when road traffic tends to increase, it's essential to modify your stopping distance to accommodate congestion and unfamiliar drivers This adjustment will enhance safety throughout the summer holidays.
Radiant summer days can enhance our mood but also heighten the risk of vision impairment due to glare while driving towards the sun This distraction may cause delayed reactions to road hazards.
Wearing shorts outside the cab is unprofessional and unsafe; fulllength trousers are required Always wear necessary PPE, including hivis, safety boots, and job-specific gear, to ensure safety and compliance.
Hot weather raises dehydration risks, impacting focus and performance Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, keeping a bottle handy, and topping up frequently, regardless of thirst.

Wear correct Hi-Vis at all times around the depot and on site.

On site, staff must wear re-enforced toe cap boots at all times. Trainers or rigger boots are not acceptable.
Wear correct PPE when carrying out daily tasks. For example goggles when jet washing.
We remind drivers to be mindful that alcohol can affect your driving the day after consumption and that you should keep close track of any alcohol consumption. Under no circumstances are you permitted to use any vehicles if you are over the legal limit. We also remind staff that as well as carrying out random alcohol testing, we also operate a ZERO TOLERANCE drugs policy.

As the conditions warm up - SHORTS are not appropriate workwear and must not be worn outside of the cab. To stay cool, ensure you have water to stay hydrated.
Under no circumstances must any employee climb on top of their wagon/vehicle/tanker/sweeper. If there is a problem, please follow the company defect reporting procedure and inform the hire desk.

H E A L T H & S A F E T Y
We would like to remind all staff that smoking is strictly only allowed in designated smoking areas. Additionally, please be aware that electronic cigarettes can pose serious risks when discarded in skips due to them containing batteries. Think carefully before disposing of any items that contain batteries.
Please make sure to completely drain all remaining water from the wet bay after your day at UBU. If the temperature drops overnight, this water may freeze, leading to additional issues with your vehicle's water tank.

Throughout the day, drivers are REQUIRED to routinely inspect their vehicles and report any damage or defects following the defect reporting procedure. An important aspect of this process is checking your wheel nuts.
All staff are required to yield to other drivers when exiting the yard. It's essential to check both left and right to ensure the safety of other road users as you leave. Additionally, all staff must consistently adhere to the designated walkways on the site.
To avoid damage to skin from the sun, please use a high factor sunscreen of at least SPF15 on any exposed skin, and reapply it every two hours, especially if you are working outdoors for extended periods. Wearing a hat and sunglasses can also help protect you from harmful UV rays.
Make sure to wash and refuel the vehicles before leaving for the day! Please take care of these tasks after your shift.
All garage staff are reminded: do not walk over the pit in the garage. The pit is there for working underneath vehicles - not for walking across. Walking over it is a serious safety risk and if done it may lead to disciplinary action for a serious safety breach

Please ensure that all garage staff familiarise themselves with the designated pathways and adhere to these safety protocols diligently. Use the proper walkways around the pit.
In December 2024, the DVSA introduced stricter loadsecuring rules to improve road safety. Non-compliance now carries heavier fines and stricter penalties

Dangerous driving incidents surged in 2024, with over 24,000 videos submitted to the National Dash Cam Safety Portal. Law enforcement now uses dashcam footage as valid evidence, leading to fines and legal actions.
Benefits of Dashcams for Fleets:
✔ Identify drivers needing training
✔ Speed up insurance claims and reduce fraud
✔ Document incidents like break-ins or hit-andruns
Dashcams enhance safety, lower costs, and offer better protection for fleets.

A woman tragically died after being struck by a road sweeper while using a pedestrian crossing in West Yorkshire. This wasn’t a UBU incident - but it's a sharp reminder of how quickly things can go wrong.
Key Reminders:
Reduce speed to walking pace near crossings, schools, and high-footfall areas
Scan constantly – pedestrians can appear suddenly
Never assume someone has seen you, even if they’re at a designated crossing
Use horn and hazards to increase awareness when visibility is limited
Stay sharp. One moment of inattention can be fatal.
A planned fire drill will take place at the UBU depot on Friday 11th July 2025. All staff must ensure they understand the fire evacuation procedure in advance.

Meeting point signage is in place for: Hire Desk Bungalow Garage Treatment Plant
✅ Know your exit route
✅ Leave immediately — no stopping for belongings
✅ Report directly to your fire point
Please see the map below for the dedicated parking areas - Parking is not permitted anywhere else on site

TITLE:
Nesting Birds in Movable Structures and Machinery
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Movable structures and idle machinery at construction sites can inadvertently serve as nesting sites for wild birds, especially during nesting season Not checking these before use may lead to the destruction of active nests, which is illegal in the UK This alert emphasises the ecological risks, legal responsibilities, and necessary actions to protect species and ensure compliance on site
Hazards to Be Aware Of:
Uninspected Equipment: Materials and structures left idle for extended periods may be chosen as nesting sites
Disturbance of Active Nests: Movement of stored materials without checks can lead to destruction of eggs or injury to chicks
Legal Breach: The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects all wild bird nests and eggs – even for non-native species.
Increased Risk Period: Between February and August, there is a higher likelihood of nesting activity on construction sites.
Unexpected Nesting Locations: Birds may choose non-traditional locations such as staircases, vehicles, plant, and equipment
Legal Responsibilities:
Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981: It is an offence to damage or destroy nests of any wild bird while in use or being built, including the taking or destruction of eggs.
Non-compliance can result in legal penalties, project delays, and reputational damage.
INDUSTRY SECTOR:
Construction, Environmental Compliance and Infrastructure

Pre-Use Checks: Always inspect stored or unused materials, machinery, and structures for signs of nesting birds before movement or use
If a Nest Is Found:
Stop all work immediately in the surrounding area.
Establish a buffer zone of 5–10m with appropriate signage
Do not attempt to disturb or relocate the nest
Notify the Project Ecology Manager for further instruction
Maintain Awareness: Unexpected nesting locations should be considered part of regular pre-use inspections
Takeaway: Always inspect materials and machinery for nesting birds before use. Early checks help prevent ecological harm and ensure compliance with legal protections.
TITLE:
Personal Protective Equipment
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Sweeper Drivers, tanker operators and site operators.
Wearing appropriate PPE can significantly reduce the risk of injury, illness, and even fatalities on site. It is the final layer of protection when other control measures either fail or are not feasible To be effective, PPE must be selected, worn, maintained, and managed correctly This alert outlines what to consider when using PPE, and reinforces the importance of following task-specific requirements and Safe Systems of Work (SSOWs)
Hazards to Be Aware Of:
Inadequate Protection: PPE that is damaged, unsuitable, or poorly fitted can fail during use
Non-Compliance: Ignoring PPE requirements puts individuals and teammates at risk
Lack of Training: Improper use or misunderstanding of PPE can lead to exposure to hazards.
Complacency: Over-reliance on PPE without following other safety controls increases risk.
Legal Responsibilities:
The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 2022: under this act employers must provide suitable PPE and ensure it is used properly.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974: The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 act requires everyone to take reasonable care of themselves and others PPE must be compatible with other equipment and be properly assessed, maintained, and stored
INDUSTRY SECTOR:
Construction, Infrastructure, Engineering, Health & Safety and Sweeping

Check for Damage: Always inspect PPE for signs of wear, tear, or defects before use.
Ensure Proper Fit: PPE must fit the individual correctly and comfortably to function effectively. Keep on top of your PPE Knowledge: Make sure everyone understands how to wear, adjust, and maintain their PPE
Store Correctly: Keep PPE in clean, dry conditions to prolong its lifespan and effectiveness
Replace When Needed: Damaged, worn out, or expired PPE must be replaced immediately
Follow SSOWs and Standards: Adhere strictly to PPE requirements outlined in relevant procedures and documents.
Takeaway: PPE is not optional – it’s your last line of defence. Use the right gear, maintain it well, and never skip checks Protect yourself and those around you by making PPE compliance a daily habit
TITLE:
Fatality – Reversing Incident
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Sweeper Drivers, tanker operators and site operators.
An incident involving a reversing vehicle - resulting in a fatality - was brought to our attention by one of our customers, Vinci. This accident is still under investigation
Reversing remains one of the highest-risk manoeuvres in our industry, with a consistent pattern of serious incidents and near misses As employers, UBU and TJM are responsible for reviewing risks and implementing effective control measures. We have developed robust procedures, training programmes, and operational standards to reduce reversing risks wherever they cannot be eliminated
Drivers and operators must continue to follow all reversing protocols without exception
Hazards to Be Aware Of:
Limited Visibility: Blind spots can obscure people or obstacles behind the vehicle
Complacency: Relying solely on cameras or mirrors increases risk of incident
Unclear Communication: Misunderstood or unagreed signals between driver and banksman can lead to dangerous manoeuvres. Site Conditions: Uneven ground, poor lighting, or distractions can impair safe reversing.
Legal Responsibilities:
Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992: Employers must organise traffic routes to ensure safe vehicle movement.
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974: All individuals have a duty to prevent harm through safe operation of plant and vehicles
PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations): Reversing aids must be used correctly and maintained in working condition
INDUSTRY SECTOR:
Construction, Infrastructure, Engineering, Health & Safety and Sweeping

UBU Reversing Safety Video – please review the following reversing video:
Eliminate Where Possible: Plan routes to avoid reversing Only enter work areas in forward gear when feasible
Read Site Rules: Always check site-specific reversing protocols on arrival
Adhere to Speed Limits: Slow manoeuvres reduce reaction time and damage potential.
Use Reversing Aids Effectively: Check mirrors, monitor cameras but never rely on them alone.
Get Out and Check: If visibility is uncertain, stop and physically inspect the area.
Use a Banksman: When available, ensure communication is clear and agreed before starting The banksman must stay in sight throughout the manoeuvre

TITLE:
Roundabout Lane Discipline – No Lane Changes
TARGET AUDIENCE:
UBU and TJM have introduced a strict policy regarding lane discipline on roundabouts: lane changes on roundabouts are now prohibited.
This decision follows a high number of avoidable incidents caused by vehicles attempting to switch lanes mid-roundabout Going forward, any collision resulting from lane changing on a roundabout will be treated as a disciplinary matter
If you're in the wrong lane, stay in it. Complete the roundabout and re-route safely on the main highway - even if it means taking a longer route or using extra fuel. Safety takes priority over convenience.
Blind Spots: Large vehicle dimensions limit visibility, increasing risk when changing lanes.
Unexpected Movement: Lane changes at low speed in confined space catch other drivers off guard.
Side-Swipe Collisions: These are common in roundabout incidents and often result in vehicle damage or injury
Chain Reactions: One bad lane change can trigger multi-vehicle collisions in busy areas
Legal Responsibilities:
Highway Code Compliance: All drivers must drive with due care and attention, and lane discipline is a legal obligation.
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974: Operatives must take reasonable care not only for themselves but also for other road users
Company Policy Enforcement: Breaches of this rule will be escalated through the disciplinary procedure without exception.
INDUSTRY SECTOR:
Construction, Infrastructure, Engineering, Health & Safety and Sweeping

Plan Ahead: Know your route and select the correct lane before entering the roundabout No Mid-Roundabout Adjustments: If you’ve made a mistake, complete the roundabout and correct the route safely afterward
Use Indicators Clearly: Signal your intentions well in advance - don’t confuse other drivers. Stay Predictable: Safe driving is predictable driving. Stick to your lane and avoid sudden changes. Accept the Delay: A longer route is always better than a collision. Fuel and time can be recovered lives can’t

Wraz z nadejściem lata temperatury rosną, a kierowcy powinni być świadomi różnych zagrożeń, aby zapewnić bezpieczną eksploatację swoich pojazdów.
KONTROLE POJAZDÓW
HAMOWANIE
Latem wzmożone prace budowlane oznaczają większą obecność pracowników. Zachowaj czujność, zmniejsz prędkość i obserwuj pracowników w pobliżu pojazdu, aby zapewnić bezpieczeństwo w strefach budowy.

ścieżkami i ściśle przestrzega niniejszych protokołów bezpieczeństwa.
Niestabilność pojazdu i wypadki
Zagrożenia drogowe i potencjalne działania prawne
Wzrost kosztów ubezpieczenia i szkody dla reputacji
Najważniejsze aktualizacje DVSA:
 Większa odpowiedzialność kierowców i operatorów
 Wymagane częstsze kontrole ładunków
Obowiązkowe szkolenia dla kierowców zabezpieczających ładunki

 Wyższe kary za nieprzestrzeganie przepisów

Liczba niebezpiecznych incydentów drogowych gwałtownie wzrosła w 2024 r., a ponad 24 000 filmów zostało przesłanych do National Dash Cam Safety Portal.
Kamery samochodowe zwiększają bezpieczeństwo, obniżają koszty i oferują lepszą ochronę flotom.

TYTUŁ:
Śmiertelność – wypadek przy cofaniu
GRUPA DOCELOWA:
Kierowcy zamiatarek, operatorzy cystern i operatorzy placów budowy.
Kierowcy i operatorzy muszą nadal, bez wyjątku, przestrzegać wszystkich protokołów cofania
Obowiązki prawne: Przepisy dotyczące miejsca pracy (zdrowie, bezpieczeństwo i dobrostan) z 1992 r : Pracodawcy muszą organizować trasy ruchu w celu zapewnienia bezpiecznego ruchu pojazdów.
Ustawa o bezpieczeństwie i higienie pracy z 1974 r.: Wszyscy mają obowiązek zapobiegania szkodom poprzez bezpieczną obsługę maszyn i pojazdów.
PUWER (Przepisy dotyczące udostępniania i użytkowania sprzętu roboczego): Urządzenia wspomagające cofanie muszą być używane prawidłowo i utrzymywane w dobrym stanie technicznym.

Przestrzegaj ograniczeń prędkości: Powolne manewry skracają czas reakcji i zmniejszają ryzyko uszkodzeń.
