Welcome to the March issue of the UBU and TJM newsletter

Welcome, everyone, to the first newsletter of 2025.

This year, we have many new and exciting plans for the business, and we need your help and support to achieve them.

Our most important target is to reduce all accidents and near misses in the company. UBU and TJM are committed to safety across all operations, and as such, we have gone right back to the beginning - with a full review of our inductions.

The new process is much more seamless and, for those who drive for the company, includes a simple yet effective practical driving assessment. This will also be rolled out to all existing drivers to provide information, instruction, and training to those who may have picked up some bad habits during their driving careers.

We will also be focusing on our environmental impact. As detailed in the last newsletter, we were fortunate to receive funding through the GM Business Growth Hub, which allowed us to create a robust carbon footprint assessment for UBU. We will be sharing ideas on how we can all help reduce our footprint and support Greater Manchester’s net zero target of 2038. While this may seem a long way off, achieving carbon neutrality requires action now. You can make a difference by driving efficiently, planning routes effectively, and reducing vehicle idling.

Finally, we would like to say well done for the significant improvements in yard safety. Last week, the Directors, senior managers, and our external safety consultant, Andy Banks, conducted a random site inspection. Aside from a few non-conformers, it was fantastic to see walkways being used, vehicles being supervised at all times, and all PPE being worn appropriately. Those who have helped make this the new normal should give themselves a big pat on the back.

We wish you a very happy Easter and look forward to the brighter months ahead.

SPRING SAFETY REMINDER

As a quick refresher for all road users, it’s essential to stay up-to-date with the latest Highway Code rules. Here's a helpful reminder on some key points:

HIGHWAY CODE

Be mindful of weight restrictions when planning your route. These restrictions are in place to protect infrastructure and ensure the safety of all road users. Look out for weight limit signs and avoid restricted areas to prevent fines and potential damage to your vehicle.

AI CAMERAS AND MONITORING

Advanced AI-powered cameras are increasingly being used to monitor traffic violations, including those related to weight limits. These cameras can quickly identify vehicles exceeding restrictions, so compliance is more important than ever. Avoid costly penalties by adhering to the rules.

PROFOFESSIONAL DRIVERS MUST STAY INFORMED

Regularly review the Highway Code to keep abreast of updates. Small changes can have significant implications, and staying informed helps you drive responsibly and safely.

For any non- critical health and safety support or suggestions please contact Constantin - our safety rep!

UBU provides staff with resources and has a Mental Health First Aider available for mental health issues. Scan the QR code to visit the Mental Health Hub or reach out to the Mental Health First Aider for assistance.

IMPORTANT DRIVER INFORMATION

SPRING WORKING

As we embrace the arrival of spring, it's important for drivers to be mindful of the different risks to maintain safe vehicle operation In the UK, spring often presents a variety of weather conditions, sometimes occurring all in one day.

VISIBILITY

ROUTE PLANNING

STRONG WINDS

BRAKING

VEHICLE CHECKS

POTHOLES

April is known for unpredictable rain showers, making it a good time to assess windscreen wipers after winter use Ensure they are clean and check for any damage or wear on the blades.

Drivers should allow extra travel time and use major road networks due to unpredictable weather, as these routes are usually less congested

Spring marks the start of storm season in the UK, where strong winds may cause road debris In such weather, avoid oversteering and slow down to improve reaction time to hazards.

Drivers need to keep a greater distance behind other vehicles since stopping distances will be extended. Make sure to leave ample space to allow for smooth braking, helping to prevent possible accidents.

Drivers must exercise caution during their vehicle inspections. Ensure that the brakes, exhaust, wipers, washer fluids, and lights are all functioning properly

Winter creates potholes, which can be hidden by spring rain. To avoid damage, slow down when driving and do not brake suddenly if you hit a pothole, as it increases the risk of injury.

TYRES Daily vehicle inspections should check tyre grip and tread depth before leaving the UBU depot. Properly inflated tires with sufficient tread improve handling and reduce slipping risks. Spending a few extra minutes on tire checks enhances safety, especially in spring conditions.

SURFACE

WATER

SKID

Spring rains create puddles that increase aquaplaning risk. Drivers should lower their speed in wet conditions to mitigate this risk.

TITLE:

Hook Lift Safety

TARGET AUDIENCE:

A F E T Y A L E R T

Hook lift operators, site supervisors

Hook lifts are essential for transporting skips and containers efficiently but pose significant risks if not used correctly. This talk highlights key hazards, legal responsibilities, and safe practices to prevent accidents

Hazards to Be Aware Of:

Crush Injuries: Risk of being caught in moving parts or struck by falling containers.

Equipment Failures: Poor maintenance can lead to serious incidents.

Overloading: Excess weight can cause instability.

Misalignment: Improper positioning can damage equipment

Pedestrian Safety: Others may be at risk near operating machinery

Uneven Surfaces: Slopes or rough terrain increase hazards

Legal Responsibilities:

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 mandates a safe workplace.

LOLER 1998 requires regular inspection of lifting equipment. PUWER 1998 ensures equipment is suitable, safe, and wellmaintained

Emergencies & Maintenance:

Stop and isolate faulty equipment

Keep people clear of hazardous areas. Report faults or near misses immediately. Regularly inspect and maintain hook lifts.

Safe hook lift use protects everyone on-site. Following safety procedures prevents accidents and ensures compliance with regulations

ACTIONS

INDUSTRY SECTOR:

Construction, Waste Management, Logistics, and Heavy Equipment Operations

Pre-Use Checks: Inspect hook lift system for damage, wear, and leaks Ensure secure container connection and good condition Verify vehicle roadworthiness and load capacity

Safe Loading & Unloading: Park on flat ground; align vehicle with container. Inspect hook and load connection at various stages. Operate controls smoothly; establish an exclusion zone.

Securing & Transporting the Load: Secure container fully before driving; use straps/chains as needed Drive carefully with attention to weight distribution

At the Drop-Off Point: Check for uneven ground/obstacles before unloading Confirm load is stable before moving away

Emergency Procedures & Maintenance: Isolate faulty equipment, keep personnel away from hazards. Report faults and conduct regular inspections and maintenance.

Parking Update - New Reversing Area

To improve safety and traffic flow, we have introduced a designated reverse bay for staff parking outside the Bungalow (see below):

UBU DEFIBRILLATORS

New Procedure:

Drive in and park as normal in the designated spaces. When leaving, reverse out of your parking space and drive up to the top car park. Reverse into the newly marked reverse bay.

Drive back down past the Bungalow facing the correct way.

This change prevents vehicles from reversing into the main yard, enhancing safety during departures. Please adhere to the new system for smooth traffic flow.

UBU and TJM offices now have a defibrillator station - The location for Walkden Yard will be in the HireDesk reception and the one at TJM Whitefield will be near the front garage.

Signage will be in place and training provided to a number of employees.

Remember, safety is a shared responsibility, and being prepared can make all the difference.

Look Carefully When Reversing

Top Tips: Check your blind spots regularly

Use your mirrors constantly Watch out for pedestrians and other vehicles

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Remember that there is no parking allowed for private cars in the depot with the exception of;
