Editor’s page Welcome to this summer issue packed to Olympic proportions with things to do in the Tyne valley this summer.

What an amazing year we are having in this country and here in the Tyne valley. At the time of writing this England have just qualified through there Euro 2012 group and no matter how far they have got by the time you read this, they have already exceeded expectations. Which just adds to the sense of the great year we are enjoying, despite the economy and the rather wet start to the summer we have had.

I hope you all got to celebrate the Jubilee and to be fair I think if Jubilee celebrations were an Olympic sport the Tyne valley would have won a gold medal! I attended two events, one of which at Greenside we have an article on in this issue on page 23. The other Jubilee event I got along to was at Prudhoe which I think the whole of Prudhoe turned up to as you could not see the high street for folk. I also know friends who attended events at Heddon, Hexham and all around Tyne valley who tell me they were a great well attended success.

It certainly has brought an even stronger sense of community to the already strong community spirit in Tyne valley. The Jubilee being so swiftly followed by the visit of the Olympic torch gave us all an excuse to leave out the bunting and stay in party mood.

Organisers of the torch route commented that the route between Blaydon and Hexham (Tyne Valley) was one of the best attended in

the North East. Something that I am sure many of you that attended would agree with after witnessing the packed streets.

Myself and the Old Blaydonians got to serenade the torch onto the old Blaydon Comprehensive/Grammar school site. The Old Blaydonians exist to keep the spirit of the old school going despite the fact it has been pulled down. They do this by trying to reunite old school members and are planning a reunion of old Grammar and Comprehensive students and teachers this September at the old school site. We have an article on this over on page 14 of this issue.

We have another great community story on page 13 about a group of folk that have banded together to form Ryton litter group a great community idea. Over on page 33 we have the story of Judith who has taken over the reins of a post that up until now has always been filled by men. So go and have a look at what Judith is up to with the Prudhoe Gleemen. Find out about the exciting new addition to the adventure playground up at Wallington on page 50 and how to host your own blooming great tea party for a good cause on page 55.

Our photography pages this month come from a young budding photographer who lives in Tyne valley. Joe from Crawcrook has his images on display on pages 56/57. My

favourite being what looks like two dinosaurs taking a drink from a lake in the bottom right hand corner. Or is that just me?. Let me know what you think. The cover is provided

by Roger Clegg of Northern Horizons, of some Romans messing about in a field. Only in Northumberland as one of my friends commented.

Our regular columnists can be found dotted around the publication with some very interesting views and comments which I encourage you to check out, but especially Phil Penny’s column on page 30 which talks about the organisation he is involved with to get Greyhounds good homes. Our Express publications have already helped him get a greyhound a home and we do hope to help him with many more over the coming months.

Ryton Ryton to welcome Norwegian team Ryton Methodist Church is getting ready to welcome a team of young Norwegians who will work with them in the community this summer.

The team is one of several coming to the North East on July 20 through More Than Gold – a programme for churches to engage with their communities in the run-up to the Olympics.

The young people, who will be staying with local families for the 12-day visit, will take part in a wide-reaching programme of events and projects, including holiday club and refurbishing Ryton Scout Hut. Evening events include a Geordie Night, Norwegian Night and Sports Quiz, as well as watching the opening ceremony of the Olympics on the church’s big screen on Friday 27th July.

There will also be an afternoon drop-in Fairtrade café with Traidcraft stall running from Monday July 23 for five days. The Norwegians will also be taking part in church services on the two Sundays of their stay.

With so many ways for individuals and families to take part, the hope is that the visiting group will have a chance to meet many local people and get to know the area well this summer.

Ryton New group tackles litter in Ryton A new volunteer group in Ryton is looking for more people to get involved in keeping the local area tidy.

Set up earlier this year, Ryton Litter Action aims to clear litter from Ryton and the surrounding countryside and work with the local council, other community groups and businesses to keep it that way.

As Andrew Wallace, who set up the group, explains: “Litter can be as small as a sweet wrapper or it can be as large as a bag of rubbish that someone has deliberately fly-tipped. Whatever the size, it blights our local community.

“It is a widespread and growing problem. The council waste services team does a great job but, with spending being prioritised, it’s getting harder to keep on top of it. That’s why Ryton Litter Action was formed - we wanted to help keep Ryton and the surrounding area a pleasant place to live and work.

“There has been a great response so far, with a group of volunteers going out every couple of weeks for an hour or two to pick up litter.

Not only is it a way of keeping our local area tidy, it’s also a good way to meet your neighbors.

“Since the group was started, we’ve collected more than 200 bags of rubbish. But, sadly, there is always more to do, and that’s why we’d welcome more volunteers to give just an hour or so of their time once a fortnight.

“But anyone can do their bit - we’ve met local residents on our picks who regularly take a plastic bag when they are walking the dog, for example,

and collect any litter they see. The more of us doing that, the better.”

In the UK, an estimated 25 million tones of litter are dropped each year, most of which is made up of food and drink packaging, as Andrew confirms: “The majority of rubbish we’ve picked is soft drink bottles and beer cans - most of which can be widely recycled – and also things like chocolate bar wrappers and plastic bags. We’ve even found a television and video player that have just been dumped.

“A plastic bottle thrown from a car, or dropped on a country lane takes hundreds of years to decompose naturally. So this sort of litter is going to stay where it is dropped unless something is done about it.”

A survey carried out by the AA showed that 94% of people think roadside litter gives a bad impression of Britain. Similarly, many people admit to littering, but when it is pointed out to them, the vast majority accept that it’s not acceptable.

Andrew continues: “If people see that an area is already littered, they think it’s ok to drop their own. Bill Bryson, author and anti-litter campaigner once said that Britain is a beautiful country ‘but only from the ankles up’. As a group, we are taking action so that Ryton and surrounding areas can look their best from any angle.”

So it was that Blaydon School began in an atmosphere of confrontational politics and its entire life was determined by government policy and diktats.

Opened as a Secondary School it remained so until, following the 1944 Education Act, it became a Grammar School in 1945.

By 1970 , Grammar Schools were considered too elitist and to conform to the new educational ethos it converted - with a massive increase in pupil numbers - to a Comprehensive School.

It remained as such until 1998 when local politicians deemed it to be surplus to requirements and it was closed.With indecent haste the entire range of buildings was razed to the ground and Blaydon School was no more.

The third was marked by a single (though highly controversial) paragraph in the local paper as follows;“Whilst we appreciate the value of a sound education, yet at the same time we deplore the erection of such a palatial building as that which was opened on Saturday afternoon for higher education in the Blaydon district. We particularly refer to the extravagant furnishing of the building.

There is a medium in everything, but the Durham Education Authority seem to have missed that happy medium. About four acres of land has been set apart for recreational purposes; the child at the elementary school has to be content with an asphalt playground that has no recommendation than its efficacy for breaking legs and cracking skulls. Only the other day a scholar attending one of the Blaydon schools had to be carried home in an unconcious condition through falling in the playground. A comparison between the elaborately furnished new Secondary School and the elementary schools furnish a glorious example of class distinction - that hated thing”

In order that Blaydon School, though gone, will never be forgotton, the Old Blaydonian Association has arranged that a commemorative plaque be erected in the building which now stands on the old school site - namely the new Blaydon Leisure & Primary Care Centre. The ceremony will take place on the day following the centenary anniversary of the School, Saturday October 13th at 1pm.

A cordial invitation is extended to ALL who attended the School in any of its guises, or were in any way connected to the School, to join in the unveiling, have a bite to eat and share many fond memories of a grand institution.

St John’s Hall in Greenside is over 100 years old. For most of that 100 years it has been at the heart of the community until it was closed due to health and safety concerns five years ago.

However the people of Greenside Parish have recently pulled together to raise funds and restore this great community facility.

The grand opening tied in with the Queens jubilee and a great celebration and family day was had by all. The day was started with the official opening of the Hall by the deputy mayor of Gateshead/Greenside resident and long time public servant, the much loved Jack Graham and rounded of with an evening of dancing. It was a great success with hundreds of local people attending from Greenside, Crawcrook, Coalburns, Clara Vale and the surrounding areas.

As you can see by the images of the day everybody had a great day and there was great sense of community spirit.

St John’s Community Hall has excellent facilities and can accommodate a range of activities such as Keep Fit, Badminton, Table Tennis, Parents and Toddlers, Drop ins, Blood Transfusion Point, Councillor ward surgeries, MPs ward surgery, Meeting Rooms, Public Meetings; Youth Groups; Art classes, Drama, Dance, Film Club, Music classes, Line Dancing, Music Festivals, Birthday Parties, Wedding Anniversaries, Wedding Receptions.

The Greyhound House “Do something amazing” – this is the message from the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) for people to come forward and donate their blood by the start of the Olympic Games in July.

Each year human donors give lifesaving blood anonymously to people they will probably never know regardless of creed or colour. For Dogs the same lifesaving process is required in the canine world.

The greyhound is the perfect canine for blood donation. Known for their speed and endurance the greyhound is the only breed that has a universal blood type for dogs. The breed’s size and calm disposition is ideal for blood donation, which only takes about 10 minutes. During which time approximately 450 ml of blood is collected in a special collection bag from the jugular vein in the dog’s neck.

Collected blood is then transported to the processing centre.

Just like the human blood service, canine donations are a vital resource to help treat health conditions. Singing and performing arts have always been Judith’s passion.

She began dancing at the age of 3 and singing and performing at the age of 5, performing as a dancer and singer throughout her childhood and taking part as a principle in many productions including Wizard Of Oz, Oliver, Mary Poppins, Carmen, many musicals and Gilbert and Sullivan Operas. Whilst studying for a Degree in Music, Drama and Dance at Birmingham University she studied singing at the Birmingham Conservatoire, and conducting with Jon Joubert and music arranging with Prof.

Ivor Keys at the University. Judith has always been involved in singing, as a soloist performer, choral member, vocal coach and conductor As a solo singer she successfully competed at Ryton, Consett and York Festivals; performed for many choral societies and groups, including The Prudhoe Gleemen, Ovingham Choral Society, Riding Mill Choral Society, Priory Singers, Ryton Choral Society, plus many charity concerts and events; performed at Newcastle City Hall, The Sage Gateshead and Sheffield Arena; made a recording for Tyne Tees Television.

It was good. Were the pictures worthy of a wedding photographer – I leave others to judge!

Will I take up wedding photography? Wedding photography is a skill, an art and a remarkable ability to communicate with large numbers of people with efficiency, humour and the personal touch. I will leave it to the good wedding photographers.

I recently ran a one day course on “how to improve your photography” at Vindolanda Roman Fort.

Following its success I will be running two more on the 29th July and 11th August. One of the participants wrote this comment. ‘It was a great day! - Roger managed the course in an informal way, allowing plenty of room for our ‘daft questions’ and particular problems we were having. The opportunity to then take photos of Vindolanda, applying what we had learnt, and have them shown and constructively reviewed was brilliant!.’

I was asked by the most delightful young couple who are close friends of my son and his family. In reality it was not simply asking me, it took them a lot of persuasion to get me to finally agree. It is a big responsibility, I have absolutely no experience and they will want to value those pictures for decades to come. It was time for me to put into practice the things I write about in this column.

That dreadful word “planning”! What I could and could not photograph during the civil ceremony; when and when not I could photograph; where and where not I could stand. A good location for photographing the “groups” had to be found where there were no distractions like telegraph poles coming out of peoples’ heads or wheelie bins strategically placed as an all too prominent distraction in the background. At least these days you may be able to digitally remove some of these eyesores, but it is still best to not have them in the first place and I chose to have a simple uncluttered background. I settled for a very quiet pastoral corner of the gardens with just grass and trees. It

I swore that I would never photograph a wedding.

I am a photographer of places, whether it be remote landscapes or the towns and villages. I have the greatest of admiration and respect for good wedding photographers. They do a great job in getting great pictures of people who, on the whole, do not respond well to being asked to be photographed. Also there is much going on to divert attention away from the photography.

Hexham The bottom line about plastics Plastics are everywhere in the modern world, and much of it is designed to either go into your mouth or into your children’s mouth, or serve as a vessel for things that go into your mouth.

Bisphenol- A or BPA commonly found in plastic is an endocrine disruptor, meaning it mimics your body’s natural hormones and can trigger major changes in your body. Of 115 published animal studies, 81 percent found significant effects from even lowlevel exposure to BPA. A recent study found that most plastic products leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals even if they’re labeled “BPA -free” What’s more disconcerting is researchers are finding that BPA-free plastics in some cases leached more BPA than the non-BPA free plastic when the plastic is subject to real life conditions such as being heated in a microwave or dishwasher. Think baby bottles here.

Plastic chemicals are among the most potentially damaging toxins for a fetus, so if you’re pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, now is the time to start limiting your exposure.

Even early-life exposure to BPA can lead to chromosomal errors in your developing fetus, causing spontaneous miscarriages and genetic

damage.

And exposure to just 0.23 parts per billion of BPA is enough to disrupt the effect of estrogen in your baby’s developing brain. No one is immune to the health risks of BPA. Research has linked BPA to: structural damage to your brain; hyperactivity, increased aggressiveness and impaired learning; increased fat formation and risk of obesity; altered immune function; early puberty; stimulation of mammary gland development; disrupted reproductive cycles and ovarian dysfunction; changes in gender-specific behaviour and abnormal sexual behaviour; stimulation of prostate cancer cells; increased prostate size and decreased sperm production; diabetes, heart disease, and liver disease As it stands, BPA is one of the world’s highest production-volume chemicals and is widely used in the production of: plastic water bottles; tooth sealants; canned foods and soda cans (most have plastic lining in the cans); plastic milk bottles; plastic microwavable plates, ovenware, and utensils; baby toys, bottles, dummies and cups.

To be fair, you probably can no longer completely eliminate your exposure to BPA (since it’s likely in our air, water, and food, too) but you can certainly reduce your exposure dramatically.

The following tips will not only reduce your exposure to BPA, but also to many of the other dangerous plastics chemicals as well.

Only use glass baby bottles and dishes for your baby. Store your food and beverages in glass, not plastic containers. Give your baby natural fabric toys instead of plastic ones. If you choose to use a microwave, don’t microwave food in a plastic container. Stop buying and consuming canned foods and drinks. Avoid using plastic wrap (and

never microwave anything covered n it). Get rid of your plastic dishes and cups, and replace them with glass. If you opt to use plastic kitchenware, at least get rid of the older, scratched ones, avoid putting them in the dishwasher, and don’t wash them with harsh detergents. Avoid using bottled water; filter your own using a reverse osmosis filter. Before allowing a dental sealant to be applied to you, or your children’s, teeth, ask your dentist to verify that it does not contain BPA. At any rate, doesn’t a drink always taste better from a glass than a plastic cup?

Woolaballoo is about to relocate and expand their operations, by opening a large Knitting and Craft boutique in the Market Place, Hexham in the premises that previously housed the National Trust shop. Due to open at 10am on Saturday 30 June 2012, we have a number of high profile knitting designers scheduled to do book signings, meet and greet events and yarn launches throughout the year.

This September Tynedale U3A is organising a unique exhibition of Arts and Crafts. The Exhibition will be open from 8th September until 29th September. The exhibition will be held in the Queens hall prestigious gallery two and will be available for viewing during normal library opening hours.

All aboard at Wallington

An exciting new addition to the adventure play area at National Trust’s Wallington has been inspired by the children who grew up in the house in the early 1900’s.

A twelve metre long train complete with a climbing wall, slide, fireman’s pole and driving cab will arrive in the West Woods at Wallington this Saturday (26 May).

Inspiration for the train came from a photograph in a Trevelyan family album that shows the opening of the Great Wallington Railway in 1934. The railway was built by Geoffrey Trevelyan, son of Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan who gifted Wallington to the National Trust in the 1950’s, and two of his friends.

Robin Dower, Grandson of Sir Charles, has fond memories of the Great Wallington Railway, he told us: “Geoffrey and his friends Nigel Bricknell and Andrew Huxley persuaded Sir Charles to let them build the Great Wallington Railway in the West Wood.

They formed the timber track on sleepers with a converted coal bogie as a chariot which sped down 100 yards of steep bank, rattled across a bridge and over a burn up the other side to come to rest at the foot of a large tree.

“It survived until after the War. Some bits of track were replaced but I recall the pretty terrifying experience of being a rider on its last run in about 1948; the track was becoming wobbly with rot and there were no brakes.”

Today a slate plaque fixed to the bridge abutment in the burn records the building of the railway – the three engineers were only teenagers on holiday from school.

Further National Trust research into the extensive photograph collection and documentation of life at Wallington has identified that the Trevelyan children particularly enjoyed the freedom of playing in the West Woods.

The National Trust are using this information to make developments in their offer for families.

Gillian Mason, Visitor Experience Manager at Wallington told us: “We are continually looking for ways to improve the experience we offer our visitors and want to use the history of Wallington to inform how we do this. The West Woods were used as a place for adventure and discovery by the Trevelyan Children and so we’re looking at ways to help our visitors enjoy the space as they did. It’s a perfect place to carry out many of the

activities listed in our 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ campaign such as den building and making mud pies. We also hold lots of outdoor bush craft events here too.”

Wallington is a popular attraction for a day out in the North East, welcoming over 200,000 visitors a year. Gillian tells us it’s important to balance the needs of each visitor: “Wallington is such a great place that is loved by many people, all of whom visit for different reasons. Some visit for the peace and tranquillity of the gardens and grounds, others for play and adventure and some who simply come to picnic in the courtyard or walk their dog. Wallington is a vast estate with plenty of space and we’re keen to ensure it remains a special place for all.”

The new adventure play train design, created by the creative play company Flights of Fantasy exclusively for Wallington, is based on a locomotive which was known to run along the Wannie Line from Morpeth to Reedsmouth via Scots Gap. Many of the children and young people referred to us from the North East Local Authorities, who are in need of foster care have experienced huge difficulties in their lives. They require stability, understanding, love and continued support to enable them to turn their lives around. Our aim is to find more quality foster carers who are able to meet those essential needs.

In order to foster we ask that you care about our children and young people and want to make a difference to their lives. We ask that you are over twenty one and have a spare room in your home. We also ask that if you are single then fostering is your main occupation and if you are a couple then one of you is the main carer.

As fostering with us is considered a full time occupation we do provide a minimum of £395 per week, per child, (much of which will attract tax relief), additionally there are holiday allowances as well as respite care available. Darras Hall & Ponteland 2012, the Year of Positive Patriotism In a special address to the nation, after the celebrations to mark her Diamond Jubilee were over, the Queen said: “It has touched me deeply to see so many thousands of families, neighbours and friends celebrating together”.

It was a heartfelt, reflective address and our stoical monarch really did appear to have been moved by the warmth of feeling towards her and her family.

The four days of celebrations were quite wonderful. There was the Diamond Jubilee Flotilla on the Thames which saw a thousand boats sailing or rowing down the river in the best of British rain.

There was the concert at Buckingham Palace where performers including Paul McCartney, Tom Jones and Robbie Williams paid homage to Her Majesty, (who was later said to have been wearing earplugs).

And finally there was the Thanksgiving Service at St.Pauls and the carriage drive through the City.

Throughout this exhausting schedule, the Queen remained composed and inscrutable, even though Prince Philip was hospitalized. Around the country, shops were full of Union Flagged merchandise, streets were strewn with red, white and blue and parties held around the country. There was hardly a voice of dissent, not even from the anti-monarchists

and all have agreed that the celebrations have united the country and made Britain a cheerier place.

The Queen’s renewed popularity at this time is pretty incredible when you consider how unpopular she was after the death of Princess Diana and after her ”annis horribilis” twenty years ago when Windsor Castle caught fire and she was criticized for her tax-exempt status.

Much of the resurgence in support for the Royal Family follows the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year and the so-called “Kate Effect”. The Duchess of Cambridge may well be a “commoner” but she has succeeded because she is a strong, well educated woman in her own right who knows when to step back from the limelight. She is proving an excellent companion for the Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as Prince William. She is not too formal but remains approachable and dignified. What is more, her High-Street style chimes with the national mood during this period of austerity.

The patriotism on display during the Jubilee weekend demonstrates that public opinion is definitely pro-Royal but there is also a pervading feeling of us all being in “it “ together, whatever “it” is. The ubiquitous “Keep Calm and Carry on” poster, the original of which was discovered in the archives of the region’s very own “Barter Books”, may be said to have become so popular because it too embodies that British spirit of unity, commitment and courage.

At a time when we are once again in economic recession, when the Euozone crisis threatens and when even Englebert Humperdinck can muster only 12 points in the Eurovision Song Contest, we Britons can still hold our heads high. It seems we don’t want to scrap our history and heritage for a Head of State who is an ex-politician or civil servant, we want to hang out bunting, sing “God Save the Queen” and rock with Royalty. For the time being at least, we are happy to practice positive patriotism.

Darras Hall & Ponteland This Month’s Recipe Hello readers, What’s the treat in store for us this month, I hear you ask, my recipe for chocolate cake.

Chocolate cake 8 oz plain flour 10 oz caster sugar 4oz cocoa powder (not drinking chocolate) 2 tsps of bicarbonate of soda 2 tsps of baking powder a pinch of salt 8 fluid oz of sour cream 4 fluid oz of unsalted butter, melted 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 large fresh eggs (at room temperature) 8 fluid oz of freshly brewed coffee Method Preheat the oven to 180 degrees centigrade, grease and line either a deep 8” round baking tin or two 8” shallow baking tins – whatever you have at hand.

Sift the flour, cocoa, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and salt together in a bowl. If you have an electric mixer, place the ingredients in the bowl with the paddle attachment.

Combine the melted butter, sour cream, eggs, vanilla extract, and mix together separately. It is important to melt the butter gently on a very low

Pour the wet ingredients to the dry, mix or switch on low speed if using a mixer until all the ingredients are combined. Once cooled, add the coffee to the mixture - the mixture will be very soft, but don’t worry because this is what makes the cake moist.

Pour the mixture into the prepared tins and place in the oven and cook for either 35 – 40 minutes or when the cake is firm to the touch. To check that the cake is cooked right through, take a skewer and test the cake in the centre, if the skewer comes out clean it is cooked.
