It’s with the warmest of welcomes that we invite you to ponder the pages of the summer edition of the Tyne Valley Express, soaking up all that the Valley has to offer. Whether feasting on the fantastic photography of Roger Clegg (page 54) or brushing up on our BBQ skills with Eliza’s latest creation (page 57), we’re certain there is plenty to be getting stuck into this summer. After a decade of dancing, Feet First Dance (page 25) give us an insight of who they are and what has contributed to their success as they invite us to share in their birthday celebrations. Hitting the stage at Queen’s Hall, Hexham (page 46), this is not to be missed as they showcase their finest talent. Continuing on the art theme, the hugely successful Prudhoe Community Arts Week gives us the round up on page 31. Our regular columnists are sprinkled among the Tyne Valley mix once again, providing us with valuable insight and

sharing their experiences. Belinda Ambrose (page 49) tackles Fever Phobia as she seeks to encourage and reassure parents when faced with an under the weather little one. Sharing some up and downs that the summer holidays can bring, Joanne Major (page 61) gives some advice on how to avoid potential problems within the modern day family. Sharing with us how she takes flight, Lisa Jacobs (page 22) reminds us of how we can relax into the beauty and tranquillity of the summertime. Finally, Roger Clegg (page 45) gives us some wonderful tips on taking the correct equipment when trying to capture the perfect photograph when out and about in the Valley. If we’re looking for a summer adventure suitable for the whole family, the National Trust definitely does not disappoint. Pages 42 and 43 are packed to the rafters with a whole host of fun and they would love you to come and join in with their events, rolled out across the whole Tyne Valley.

Bringing us some splendid art, we have the Balman Gallery (page 37) have some stunning pieces on display in Corbridge. Their latest exhibition features art work from across the region and further afield, provoking many an interesting thought. Finally, for more local events, our what’s on pages continue to highlight some of the ongoing community activities that you’re always invited to get involved in. We wish you all the best as you enjoy a super summer in the Tyne Valley.

God Bless Robert and the Tyne Valley Team.

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy This timeless aria, composed by the legendary George Gershwin, is quite probably one of my favourite songs of all time. Beautifully combining a soulful melody with laid back folk inspired tones, it is no surprise that Summertime is one of the most covered songs ever. As the opening song in Gershwin’s opera, Porgy and Bess, we see and hear it as a lullaby sang by Clara to her child. Emotive and pure, the song strikes a chord with all who listen to it. It paints a delightful picture of a mother affirming her love and desire to care for her child until she is ready to find her own path in life. For my 21st birthday, I was given a wonderful painting which features a big eagle taking flight over a green valley with mountains in the background. Sitting on the eagle is a blonde haired girl whom I have decided is me. This girl is flying across the landscape with little worry or stress, enjoying the view and the freedom of flying. Much like the child in the lullaby, she has spread her wings and taken to the sky.

This picture hangs above my piano and is a continual source of inspiration for me, reminding me of how nothing is impossible. As a musician, I often can feel so caught up in the music I’m playing that it is like flying. I easily lose sight of whatever might be causing me trouble, worry or stress as I fly way above my circumstances, just as the eagle looks down upon things rather than being caught up in the centre of them. It gives me a fresh perspective and enables me to appreciate the bigger picture. Moving into the summer, we naturally become more relaxed as we ease into holidays and hopefully see a change in the weather. We are so fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the UK and in a country which freely allows us to live, work and worship in ways that don’t automatically land us in prison or worse. We are free to enjoy our lives and get the very best out of what life has to offer.

As the hustle and bustle begins to die down, it is a great opportunity to seek out some time to rest and recharge our batteries, especially in our glorious corner of the world with the Tyne Valley on our doorstep. Why not take the chance this summer to discover what it is that makes you fly, spread your wings and take to sky? The view will be absolutely amazing.

Feet First Dance Ten years ago, a new dance company began to tread the boards in the North East of England. With a vision to see young dancers tap into their creativity and grow in confidence, Feet First Dance provide a positive and encouraging environment for members to explore various styles of dance whilst developing their understanding and technical ability. Having danced since the age of 6, Lucy Hudson realised her ambition to become a teacher following completion of her BA Honours degree in 2003. It was then that Feet First Dance was launched across the Tyne Valley, enabling many to access excellent dance tuition that was both local and affordable. With classes running in a variety of rural locations, students can take part in Stage, Contemporary, Street Dance, Musical Theatre and Ballet. Speaking from her own childhood experience of dance, Lucy was keen to avoid the negative experiences she had come through when pursuing her love for dance, saying “I wanted to provide an environment where children would not fall victim to favouritism, negative criticism or size stereotypes.” With this refreshing outlook, it is wonderful to see Feet First go from strength to strength and boasting a company of 220 students between the ages of 3 and 18. Whilst not entering students for exams, Feet First believe in striving for excellence in all areas of performance and academic development. To celebrate the success of the students, the company gather for a performance at the end of each academic term. This culminates in a summer performance at the Queen’s Hall, Hexham which showcases the incredible talent of the dancers. Across the last 10 years, Feet First Dance has taken part in a variety of local and national events, galas and festivals. Taking every effort to enjoy and encourage the hard work and determination of the Feet First dancers, it is no wonder they are sought after performers for many events across the region, most recently at the Prudhoe Community Arts Festival which successfully brought together and showcased a whole host of local talent. In recent years, the dance company have been invited to be the principle dancers on the music videos of local band, Vinyl Jacket, receiving very positive reviews. To celebrate its milestone birthday, the entire company of Feet First will be performing at the Queen’s Hall, Hexham on July 12th & 13th, Bringing to the stage a show called “Once upon a time...”. Based on a theme of fairy tales and fantasy, each dance group will perform a series of dances focusing on a different fairy tale. With each dance group being encouraged to create and develop their own style of choreography, it promises to be a spectacular performance featuring the very best the dancers have to offer and definitely not one to miss. Tickets for “Once upon a time...” are available from Lucy Hudson and from the Queen’s Hall. Prices are £9 for Adults, £7 for Children/Concessions For further information about Feet First Dance, contact Lucy Hudson on 07855 761199 or email hudsonlucy@yahoo.co.uk You can also connect with us on Facebook and Twitter.

week Prudhoe’s first Community Arts Week covered a range of activities, including singing, dancing, acting, groups and individual performers, displays and just having fun! The first event took place on Saturday 25 May with a Teddy Bears’ Picnic held at the Riverside Park in the amphitheatre area. The sun shone and the family groups were entertained by Magic Punch with his Punch and Judy Show, storytelling from Patricia Hatherley and facepainting supplied by WaterWorld staff. Bank Holiday Monday, 27 May, saw a Ceilidh with entertainment provided by The Hedgehog’s Skin - great fun and sore feet were had by all! The Fuse Media Centre provided a wonderful venue for Sing-along-a-film - Mamma Mia - on the afternoon of Tuesday 28 May. A large group of children and adults sang along to ABBA’s great songs. The evening saw something completely different with a Zumba and Energize evening at the Tory Club with a great turnout to watch and take part! A highlight of the week took place on the afternoon of Wednesday 29 May at The Manors, West Wylam, with 1950s memories. The afternoon had a range of 1950s music from Prudhoe’s Music Man, John Robson and singing duo The Satellites, as well as artefacts collected by the Local History Society. Wednesday evening saw a great concert, Musical Communities, held in West Road Methodist Church, featuring the Community Band and the Community Choir. Thursday 30 May saw the first of two evening events celebrating performing arts in Prudhoe. Four groups of performers entertained a sell-out audience, who greatly enjoyed the skills of the Prudhoe Gleemen, Dragon Tale Theatre Group, Fool’s Gold acoustic group and Colin Waters, jazz and soul music. Friday 31 May saw the second, comprising the Cherrypickers, Jemms and Greenshoe singing and acting groups and Feet First Dance Group. Both evenings were a great success and show how much talent there is in Prudhoe and the surrounding area.

Throughout the week Waterworld ran a children’s art competition and Richard Heslop ran storytelling activities for younger children. The week concluded with a Coronation Jubilee Street Fair held on Sunday 2 June, which saw Front Street packed with people, being entertained by many of the groups who had appeared during the week and local community and charity stalls as well as the fair rides for all ages. The sun shone again and this was a fitting end to a fabulous eight days of entertainment for all ages. Alongside these activities Radio Prudhoe ran for three weeks from the Fuse Media Centre. Music from all eras, news and interviews supported the Arts Week and the Fair. Prudhoe Community Arts Week was part of a much bigger venture! The Prudhoe Community Arts Project comprises a number of creative and performing arts groups and organisations based in the Prudhoe area. The overall plan is to find space for a Community Arts Centre and Theatre within Prudhoe. Very many thanks to everyone involved. Will we do this again in 2014......maybe! For more information please contact Ian and Caroline Warburton through prudhoecap@hotmail.com and to see more information about the Arts Week please see Prudhoe Community Arts Festival Facebook page.

Over 40? Having problems with your vision? Frustrated that you can’t read a menu or check prices when out shopping? Irritated that you have to put on reading glasses to send a text? Would you like your vision of 10 or 20 years ago? We can give you back your vision of your youth. Yes we can! There are two great alternatives to the hassle of reading glasses & I can personally recommend them. I am 47 myself & I don’t wear reading glasses! I just couldn’t be bothered with the hassle....constantly looking for them .... carrying them around all the time...searching for them in my handbag......no chance! Instead I wear multifocal lenses. I either wear my multifocal glasses or my multifocal contact lenses. My glasses are just fabulous. Wonderful clear vision at all distances. I put them on in the morning & take them off at night & I can see clearly all day. So much so, that I never think about my vision. Hassle free on a busy work day. On other more active days, I don’t wear my glasses. On these days, I am busy doing shopping or exercising or catching up with paper work or enjoying time with my children. No glasses! I wear my multifocal contact lenses. And I see clearly all the time & without reading glasses. Do you want to join me and have ‘hassle free’ vision?

Give your eyes the freedom of contact lenses... and discover natural vision. Competitive... Monthly contact lenses with solutions from just £10 per month

Ready, Steady ... Knit! Since I first opened my lovely little wool shop just off Prudhoe front Street a year ago, I have been astounded by the generosity of knitters. As well as knitting for family and friends, many people want to use their skills to give something back. So to get those needles going, we happily hosted two charity knitting days at the shop to kick start projects to help others.

Luncheon Club Every Wednesday 12.30 Great Food, Great Company! 10 -14’s Club Every other Wednesday 6.30pm to 8.30pm Computer Games, Films, Group Activities, Free Food and Much Much More! Great activities in a safe environment. Mark 1:1 Church@West Wylam Cricket Pavillion. Every Sunday at 5.30pm

Soon after that I was approached by Brenda Lowrey, a midwife from Hexham Hospital, who was knitting baby clothes to sell to raise funds for the Iolanthe Midwifery trust, promoting health and wellbeing for mothers and babies both at home and abroad. Brenda asked if I knew anyone who could knit baby clothes to help her, and the volunteers came pouring in. Our knitting friends continue to knit gorgeous baby hats and bring in beautifully knitted baby clothes to pass on to Brenda to sell.

Mobile Valets by

From 4x4’s to luxury sports cars, caravans, taxis and more, every vehicle deserves that showroom look.

From the moment you choose Valets by Valentino you can be sure that your vehicle is in safe hands. The products and equipment we use are of the highest quality and what’s more, the versatility and flexibility of our services means that you can keep your vehicle in showroom condition and have complete control over costs.

And lastly, our exciting international project saw us knitting jumpers and hats for new-born babies in Africa. These are known as the “fish and chip babies”, as they are so poor that mothers have to take their babies home from hospital wrapped up in newspaper - just like fish and chips! This simple pattern has been knit in dozens of bright colours, and twice this year we have sent parcels out to Ethiopia where local teacher Victoria Bell has been doing voluntary work. Victoria took the baby clothes to Hosanna hospital where they were greatly received.

ROCK GUITAR TUITION

s Blue lising i d n a n Rock, Metal, Punk

Having lessons with an experienced tutor is still the most productive way to learn the guitar. With many years experience in performance, song writing and recording, my private lessons are tailored to each student and include: • Learning new chords and strumming patterns • Working towards a live performance • Developing your own style of songwriting or soloing • Phone and email support when needed • Most importantly HAVING FUN - it is after all called “playing” guitar

I can also provide advice and assistance on equipment, maintenance, setups, restringing etc.

So if you are at a loose end, get out your needles and join us at one of our knitting groups at Ready Steady Knit in Prudhoe.

Our first project was The Big Knitathon. Back in November, The Big Issue Foundation wanted to raise awareness of the needs of homeless people by knitting the world’s biggest blanket. And we were only too happy to get together and knit for a good cause. By the end of the month, we had a collection of almost 100 squares knitted by our customers to send off to the foundation - to be added to hundreds of other squares from all over the country. They would then be sewn together to make the world’s biggest blanket and tour the country promoting the work of the foundation. We are looking forward to seeing the finished article.

This is Chris Gollon’s first NE solo gallery exhibition and he is delighted to exhibit in the region that has given him so much. In 2009, Chris was Fellow and First Artist in Residence at the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS), Durham University. He participated alongside leading global thinkers in the Being Human project. Many paintings in the show were created at, or inspired by, this time in Durham. Chris is exhibited in the British Museum and his art has featured in Hollywood’s Twilight saga.

Dancing Philosophers at Durham At Durham University, Chris was given a superb studio at the IAS, overlooking the Cathedral. He left his studio door open, allowing fellow academics to drift in and react verbally to his imagery. For the first time, the IAS had invited a non-academic into its midst - with huge success! One night Chris took philosophers to a club, where, after a few drinks, one or two let their hair down on the dance floor in a variety of styles - some quite alarming! This inspired the Dancing Philosophers, featuring in the show.

Town and Gown: Durham University Two Friends II also emerged from this period. ‘In my second Residency at Durham,’ Chris explains, ‘I was exploring the theme of Love. I was living on my own in St Mary’s College quarters, so on Friday nights I would go to the pub, and being alone, I observed more. Although most people think town and gown stay separate, I noticed after they’d had a few drinks, once in a while, an unlikely friendship was formed. Unlikely friendships have always drawn me, and my stay in Durham helped me to capture one.’

Magic...

Chris Gollon, The Dancing Philosopher (top) Chris Gollon, Two Friends II (right)

Jenny Holm, A Twist in the Tail Northumbrian-based Jenny Holm’s magical, mystical paintings are a neat accompaniment to Chris’s. Witty, edgy and bristling with Biblical allusions, her new work sits alongside his well. We are always aware of a rich human story beneath Jenny’s paintings too. Jenny’s commanding figures both intrigue and compel. They leave you wanting to know more...

Metal...

Casper Prager Bowl Casper Prager adds a powerful 3D element to the show. His bowls and sculptures combine traditional blacksmithing with wit and with modern design. Amsterdam-based Casper breathes fresh life into this ancient craft and this is his first UK show.

And Wood!

Eleanor Lakelin Vessel Eleanor Lakelin is inspired by the warmth of wood and the way sun, rain, frost and fire colour and texture it. Her work combines traditional craftsmanship with a creative approach. Each unique piece is finished to the highest quality and undergoes up to thirty processes. Eleanor will turn, saw, carve, sandblast, scorch or bleach the wood, depending on the effect she is after. Vessels may be roundbottomed, gourd-like shapes or scorched black to contrast with the interior of a richly-grained fruitwood.

Sometimes less is best I know a lot about photographic equipment. I ought to, I’ve probably bought half the photographic equipment ever made over the last forty years, and then sold it, and bought more. I have had great big, impressive looking telephoto lenses that never took a decent picture and extreme wide angle lenses that have taken pictures where the detail has been almost too small to see. It did not stop with cameras and lenses, it also included enlargers and film and print processing equipment. It is strange that, on reflection, the more equipment I seemed to have, the already small number of good pictures taken seemed to decline. It became a nightmare trying to decide what to take out each day. The only way I could guarantee I would never miss a picture was to take it all! More and more the days out became a chore lugging a heavy rucksack miles and miles and never using most of the equipment. The trouble with following this approach to taking pictures is that the telephoto lens is all too frequently not long enough and the wide angle lens is often not wide enough resulting in the “need” to get something to address that problem – a sort of photographers OCD! It also led to a succession of ever larger bags to replace ones that became too small. I am too long in the tooth now to want to carry a heavy rucksack, so the amount of gear I use is very carefully worked out to minimise weight and try to never miss that vital picture.

One solution to this “never missing a picture syndrome” is to use one of the excellent digital compact cameras with their zoom lenses covering a large range from wide angle to telephoto. Of course there are many compromises to achieve this and you may or may not be prepared to accept these. Another solution is to have a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) with a wide range zoom lens - a bit bigger and heavier but, to many, worth it. Again, you must accept that the design is one

of compromise. However, you will probably be delighted with your pictures and unaware of these compromises. Because of what I do I have to go further in my search for quality because I have had pictures reproduced that are metres wide.

In a very early column I described the criteria I set myself in collecting pictures to build up the story of the Wall throughout the year. I wanted one type of picture to emphasise the foreground and put it into the context of its surroundings. I now rely on a moderate wide angle lens with a fixed focal length. They are relatively small and easy to make and the technical quality is superb. Gone is my ability to stand in one place and compose my picture with a zoom ring – I have to actually move around a bit for the best composition. I think this has improved my photography because I have to think more about what I am doing. The moderate wide angle lens emphasises the foreground and is wide enough to give a good idea of its context. I remember when I first used my new wide angle fixed focal length thinking “if only I had brought my very wide angle zoom lens I could have got more in”. On thinking about it I decided I could have got much more of the fabulous sky but Hadrian’s Wall, an integral part of the picture a bit further away, would have become almost invisible. Joe Cornish is a brilliant landscape photographer who has had a massive impact on landscape photography – if he does most of his photography with one moderately wide angle fixed focal length lens, it must be good enough for me. I now take out with me my wide angle lens, a very compact standard focal length lens which equates closer to the our own angle of view and a short telephoto fixed focal length lens which allows me to pull in some slightly more distant subjects and to change the apparent perspective. This is lighter

to carry in a bag over my shoulder. I have added a slightly longer telephoto lens that lives in my rucksack for less frequent use. This simplifying of my photography has refocused my mind and made it much more enjoyable. I have yet to “miss” a picture because I did not have the right lens! Plans are being finalised for a PHOTOGRAPHY DAY at CORBRIDGE ROMAN SITE on the 17th SEPTEMBER. It will be FREE! but numbers will be limited. It will be about how to get the best out of your holiday / days out photographs. If you are interested contact Alex McCroskie at Hadrian’s Wall Trust on 01434 609700. May you capture many happy memories with your cameras this Summer

Do you suffer with fever phobia? Just as the innate intelligence of your body knows how to heal a cut, it also knows how to fight viruses and bacteria. Childhood illness or ‘health challenges’ as I like to refer to them, are normal developmental steps for building a healthy immune system. With each infection dealt with successfully by the body’s immune system, it emerges stronger and better equipped to deal with similar infections later on. US scientists have discovered that babies who have had regular fevers in their first year have stronger immune systems and are less at risk of allergies such as eczema and asthma that those children whose fevers are suppressed.

*

Hall, Stairs & Landing

Hexham

Fevers with infections are a normal response to the body fighting off the invading organism. Anytime you lower a fever artificially you’re making your body more receptive to the invading pathogens. A fever stimulates the immune system and creates an inhospitable environment for invading organisms, essentially turning up the heat high enough that the invading microbes cannot live. Yet despite evidence showing that an increased body temperature of up to 40 degrees Celsius has a number of beneficial effects including helping the body fight unwanted bugs, many parents (and physicians) are overly concerned about the rare potential complications of a fever, and will medicate their child with Calpol or ibuprofen at the slightest sign of an elevated temperature in the fear that they will suffer brain damage from it. Medical journals refer to this as fever phobia, and numerous studies have found doctors actually perpetuate fever phobia by fixating on a child’s temperature when enquiring about symptoms often resulting in a lot of unnecessary medication. With every drug, including Calpol and ibuprofen which are the most widely used drugs amongst infants and children, there are known side-effects. It is very concerning that our youngsters are exposed to the hazards of these drugs for often very minor conditions that do not threaten life. Medical research indicates that paracetamol, the main ingredient in Calpol and other cold and flu preparations for babies and children, increases the risk of developing asthma. The results of the of the world’s largest study on asthma published in The European Respiratory Journal supports the link between paracetamol use and an increased susceptibility to asthma. Non steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen

have side-effects such as inflammation and bleeding in the gut, causing increased permeability and the likelihood of a ‘leaky gut’ with regular use. That aside, there is often the fear that your child may suffer a seizure with fever referred to as a febrile seizure which will occur in 4% of children with temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius. According to Dr Murtogh who authored ‘General Practice’, febrile seizures are triggered by a rapid rise in temperature rather than its absolute level. Though a febrile seizure can be frightening, it typically will cause no lasting effects if they last for less than 15 minutes. Any seizure lasting longer than this or continuing intermittently for longer than 30 minutes will require close monitoring. When observing fevers in your child, spiking temperature which means marked variations in temperature compared to a slow rise in temperature can be problematic, and according to medical texts, a fever is not harmful unless until it reaches 41.5 degrees Celsius. It is important to note that fevers will always be highest at night and should start to decline over a 12 hour period. In most cases, rest, as your child will feel tired and nauseas and plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and plenty of TLC is all that’s needed when a fever strikes. Whilst letting your child sleep, be mindful to keep a check on their temperature. Whilst your may be feeling a bit uncomfortable lowering a fever with medications will mask symptoms which may lead your child returning to your normal activities too soon, when their body could still benefit from extra rest. Be aware though, that complete lethargy, unresponsiveness or twitching in your child will warrant medical attention. There are some other instances when a fever does require medical attention, such as fever in an infant younger than 3 months (at any temperature). A baby is much more likely to get dehydrated very quickly and complications can arise. Through personal experience when young baby Beatrice had a high temperature preceding a nasty croupy cough, we opted to use Belladonna (which is a natural homeopathic remedy) over medical drugs and it worked beautifully. We kept her well hydrated through regular breastfeeding and this also provided her with comfort. By

the morning her temperature was normal. You can also prevent dehydration if your infant has a fever by giving them water in a bottle, or if she refuses that, try using an eyedropper instead. Many parents worry a fever may be an indicator of meningitis, but there are other signs to look for here such neck stiffness, listlessness, poor appetite, vomiting, inconsolable crying, irritability, headache and possibly a rash. If you are concerned, then always seek medical help. Finally, remember that letting a fever run its course is typically the best choice to help your child fight off a viral or bacterial infection … but you should also take steps to bolster your child’s immune system to ward off pathogens without ever needing a fever in the first place, using tools like proper nutrition, exercise, stress relief, high-quality sleep and regular chiropractic check-ups. As a mother of three children I know the anxiety when children or babies become unwell but through my life and learning experiences I am in awe of my children’s bodies’ ability to heal themselves with the right support. After all, the power that made the body can heal the body. “Faith is like a bird that feels the dawn breaking and sings while it is still dark.”

Children go ‘potty’ for Marie Curie Cancer Care Thousands of children will raise vital funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care this year by growing the charity’s iconic yellow daffodil logo as part of the Mini Pots of Care appeal. Now in its ninth year, Mini Pots of Care is a creative and educational project for schools and groups, teaching children about science, nature and the work of Marie Curie Nurses. Last year over 3,200 schools, nurseries and organisations took part in the appeal which invites children aged between 3 and 11 to plant and grow beautiful yellow daffodils and fundraise for the charity. The children receive a free kit including daffodil bulbs to plant in the autumn and care for throughout the winter months, reflecting the work of Marie Curie Nurses, who provide free care to patients with terminal illnesses in their own homes throughout the UK.

I would like to introduce my company, A.Douglas Construction. We have been established for over 10 years and are a building company based on a family tradition with a reputation for quality project management, timely delivery and aftercare service. All work undertaken is fully guaranteed and is completed to the highest standards of quality control.

Hexham Pump up the Volume Hello readers, It looks like summer has eventually arrived we have certainly waited long enough! With it comes the thought of outdoor entertaining; whether it is a picnic, barbecue or something grander such as tea in the garden at some grand stately home we Brits just can’t wait to dine outside. It conjures up images of neatly trimmed lawns, tables groaning with food: pork pies, quiche, tea sandwiches, crunchy leafy salads and all manner of side dishes. But is the food on your garden table one to be proud of? If barbecuing is your thing, do you take the easy option of popping on a few burgers and sausages, and have a few white rolls at the ready. Yes! I hear some of you cry – we don’t live in a grand house or have the time. But really folks, is barbecuing so difficult – just get the coals at the right temperature and you have an outside oven – simple as that. Fish is one of the easiest things to cook on a barbecue, place it on some tin foil, drizzle over some olive oil, season it with salt and pepper a squeeze of lemon, a few sprigs of fresh dill, seal the foil, cook for 3 – 4 minutes dependent on the size of the fillet. Remember; try using fish that is sustainable, it’s usually cheaper too. Ask your fishmonger if you’re not sure. Let’s face it we’re all cutting our cloth at the moment and keeping an eye on the purse strings; and if fish isn’t your thing try my recipe for sausage kebabs –

they’re delicious. Children love them too and they get to eat vegetables at the same time. This is an economical and tasty dish that can also be done in the oven.

Sausage Kebabs (serves 4) For this recipe you will need: 1lb of good quality sausage – try to get sausage with a high meat content 1 large red pepper 1large yellow pepper

Remove the onion skins and cut them in half then quarters – the onion will come apart. You will need to use the bigger pieces of onion as these will stay on the skewer. Take the skewer and slide a whole tomato onto it, then take a few layers of onion and slide onto the skewer next to the tomato, then take the peppers and repeat the process – finish with a tomato. Repeat the process on each skewer.

4 large red onions 8 large vine ripened tomatoes or whatever your budget allows

For the marinade I use my own chili jam for this but you can purchase sweet chili sauce in the shops – this is optional if you are making them for children, dependent on how hot the sauce is.

Method Cut the sausage into 1” pieces – set aside. Half each pepper and remove the inner core and seeds –cut into pieces approximately 2” in size as they have to be slightly larger than the sausage.

You can either place the kebabs directly on the barbecue or use a sheet of tin foil over the grill itself, this makes it easier to turn the kebabs. As sausage has a high fat content it will burn very quickly, wait until the coals are quite low before you start cooking. Brush the kebabs with the sweet chili sauce, turning and brushing with the marinade as they cook. This is an economical and tasty dish that can also be done in the oven. Serve with pitta bread, a crunchy green salad, boiled rice or cous cous. Enjoy! www.elizapepperpot.co.uk info@elizapepperpot.co.uk

Darras Hall & Ponteland It is not flesh and blood but the heart which makes us fathers and sons. - Johann Schiller The school summer holidays are upon us! That time of the year when parents are driven demented and long for September. In the modern family structure, parenting often involves step-families. The cry “you can’t tell me what to do! You’re not my Dad!” is more than just a cliché. Being a step-parent is not an easy job, but neither is it an uncommon one. There are legal implications to being a stepparent too. No matter how involved you are in the upbringing of a child, if you are not related, then you have no legal standing in respect of that child. Whilst this may not be evident on a day by day basis, it means a step-parent is not entitled or authorised to take decisions relating to the child’s upbringing. A perfect example of such a situation is if the stepparent is caring for the child, and the child has an accident requiring a trip to A&E. The step-parent cannot legally sign the consent forms for any required treatment, and the hospital cannot treat the child until the consent of one of the biological parents is obtained. Such decision making in relation to raising children has been encapsulated in the legal definition of what is called Parental Responsibility, which is “...all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority

which by law a parent of a child has in relation to the child and his property”. All mothers who give birth to a child automatically have parental responsibility, but it is not automatic for fathers. Although the mechanism has been in place for some time for biological fathers to acquire parental responsibility to acknowledge their role in their child’s life, the law has now envisaged the situation where it may be appropriate to acknowledge a step-parent’s role too. For the purposes of the law, you are classed as a step-parent if you are married to the child’s biological parent. If you have consistently played a significant parenting role in the life of your stepchild, there may be a number of benefits to that role being legally recognised. If everyone who has Parental Responsibility for the child agrees (and this can be just the mother, or the mother and the father), a legal agreement can be drawn up and ratified by the Court granting the step parent Parental Responsibility alongside the biological parent or parents. This does not diminish either the other parents’ rights and responsibilities towards the child or their duty to maintain, but it can be significant for both the step-parent and the child in acknowledging their relationship.

Even if the absent parent doesn’t agree, it is still possible to obtain Parental Responsibility as a stepparent if the Court is satisfied that it is in the child’s best interests to make such an order. At Major Family Law, we embrace supporting the family in whatever guise that takes. We think more step-parents should be made aware of their position and acknowledged for their role in the family. If you or someone you know is a step-parent, come and talk to us about our step-parent package, and have a happy summer!

Spreading a bit of sunshine Not one for sitting around, Joanne Major and her legal team at Major Family Law joined local runners on the evening of 26th June for a 5km fun run along a scenic route of the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside in support of The Evening Chronicle Sunshine Fund. The charity provides specialised equipment to children with disabilities in the North East of England, and individuals, groups, registered organisations, special and mainstream schools and hospitals can ask for their support to improve the lives of children with disabilities. The Sunshine Run is an annual event which encourages runners of all levels to take part and this is the first time that Major Family Law have been involved. Delighted by the support received for the team by way of sponsorship, the generosity no doubt spurred the team on to complete the run. Donating in support of any or all of the MFL runners is made easy by being able to give through the Major Family Law Just Giving Page at www.justgiving.com/Major-Family-Law and donations are still most welcome via the link post event. Major Family Law were delighted

to be able to inform the Sunshine Fund well in advance of the event that they had exceeded their sponsorship target, and remain intent on raising as much as possible for such a worth local charity. Not all their donations could be registered on the Just Giving site though: Lanchester Dairies, with whom Major Family Law have an established relationship thanks to a unique advertising campaign on the dairy’s milk bottles, have offered to donate some of their delicious Bill n Geoff’s real dairy ice cream to The Evening Chronicle Sunshine Fund to delight the junior beneficiaries of the charity, although runners may be hoping to be greeted at the finish line by a Bill n Geoff’s ice cream for their efforts! Major Family Law would like to thank everyone who has given so generously in support of the run and the Major Family Law team. For more about The Evening Chronicle Sunshine Fund, see their website: www.sunshine-fund.org For more information about Bill n Geoff’s real dairy ice cream, see their website: www.billandgeoffs.co.uk
