Hamper it up It’s that time of year again when Christmas is just around the corner, and, by now most of you will be gearing up for the festive season. It’s usually a sign to the general public, that when Marks and Spencer display their Christmas selection of gifts, toys and other paraphernalia the rush is on with a belief that Christmas is next week! When, in fact, there is still seven weeks to go! I know some of you might like to get organised and start your shopping early, especially those families who have children and work - time just isn’t on your side. Indeed, buying off the shelf is probably the most efficient way for some of you where this is the case, but whether it’s cost effective is another matter. Many of you will also be shopping online - where’s the fun in that, I ask! Granted crowds aren’t fun either, but at least you get to see the beautiful displays that fill our shops. Perhaps then, it’s time for change, to look at other ways you can bring the festivities back into your home rather than pass you buy in the frenzy that lies ahead. Reflect and look at alternative ways to approach this years festivities for a change. But where do we begin? In some respects, we as a nation are spoilt for choice when it comes to selection and what there is to choose from at this time of year. In fact, it makes the decision process of what to buy and for who, a process that is an absolute nightmare! No wonder it has become a dread rather than enjoyment for many of us. Why not simplify things; hampers are a great way to solving many a dilemma, but to many of you are now just a thing of the past. You can either buy a hamper or make one up of your own - your almost guaranteed that what’s in it will be eaten. Why go overboard with expensive gifts, when the smallest of gestures can bring so much pleasure. Try making a jam or chutney yourself, knowing you’ve made it just makes it extra special. You can add things as you wish: cheeses, chocolates - all manner of things to be eaten and enjoyed, guaranteed they won’t be taken back. You can either make sweet or savoury hampers. You could also choose from a selection of products we make from our premises in Blaydon. Knowing your product is locally sourced adds to its authenticity. So on a final note, let us give some thought to those less fortunate, and consider donating a hamper - perhaps to an elderly neighbour or a charity of your choice. For further information on hampers you can either email or telephone us, see details below. Enjoy

Starting a business? Consider your options

Starting a business at any time in life can be a daunting process. You may go through many ideas before deciding on the best route or idea to take forward and then undertake research and planning to ensure as much as you can it will be a success. So what if a lot of this hard work was done by someone else? Someone who had tried and tested the idea and licensed it to you for a fee to run as your own business? This concept is called franchising where a business idea is tried and tested before you buy into it. The principle is quite simple some businesses choose to grow by granting a franchise license to others who sell their product or service within a specific territory.

The advantages to this are: - You don’t need to come up with a new idea - With larger brands you buy into national advertising and recognised trading names - Good franchisors offer comprehensive training and support Like any financial contract you enter into there is still homework to do. You must check the franchisor (grants the license) is reputable and preferably registered with an official regulator like the BFA (British Franchise Association) Investing in a franchise can be anything from £500 up to millions of pounds for large national or international brands.

What are the cost implications?

Normally the franchisor receives an initial fee, payable at the outset, sometimes with ongoing management service fees. In return, the franchisor has an obligation to support the franchisee with training, product development, advertising, promotional activities and specialist management services. If you are interested in franchising as a business opportunity and live in rural Gateshead, Durham or Northumberland, why not consider attending a free workshop funded by the North East Rural Growth Network. Workshops are listed below and include small and large franchise investment options. In addition to the franchising workshops we are also offering a session on ‘Introduction to building a website for a new business’ for if you are thinking about starting a business and will need a website on a budget. The North East Rural Growth Network provides a range of services and information for those in rural areas considering starting or those already in business looking to access information on business support initiatives. The project is being part financed by the European Union’s ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-13 and by Defra.

To book any of the workshops contact Caroline Preston on 0191 433 2855 or email carolinepreston@gateshead.gov.uk

The following workshops are available to people living in the RGN rural areas which include: Rural Gateshead (Whickham South, Sunniside, Lamesley, Chopwell, Rowlands Gill, Winlaton, High Spen, Crawcrook, Greenside, Ryton, Crookhill, Stella) Rural Durham or Rural Northumberland (all areas except Wansbeck/Blyth Valley)

Tyne Rivers Trust

Tyne Rivers Trust

We always need help. Tyne Rivers Trust acts as guardian of the entire River Tyne catchment of over 1,100 square miles – with nearly three thousand miles of rivers and streams to watch over! - with just a small team of scientists. The Trust relies heavily upon our wonderful volunteers to deliver our habitat improvement work and to act as our ‘eyes and ears’ across the entire catchment. We deliver focused, sciencebased conservation, education and habitat improvement programmes across this large area and our volunteer network really helps us to monitor the ‘health’ of our river system, and to implement some of the improvements. We are really grateful to all of our volunteers, who come in many different guises, in a wide range of ages and skills, living and working in both rural and urban districts.

‘Get Your Feet Wet!’ – River Watch groups

Our successful River Watch community groups of volunteers work under the banner of ‘Get Your Feet Wet!’. These groups of local volunteers work together, with guidance and training from us, to observe and report on their local stretch of river as well as make improvements through organised river activities, such as litter-picking. We provide training to interested River Watch individuals, to equip and empower them to deliver real physical improvements to the river environment. As these volunteers become more skilled and knowledgeable, they are keen to tackle some issues further upstream, realising that in some instances, issues literally arrive with the water flow.

Collecting a water sample to measure turbidity and phosphate

Some of this training is simply in general river knowledge to help to observe changes; combined with easy techniques, for example, how to best remove (and why!) the invasive non-native plant, Himalayan balsam. A smaller number are very keen to learn the more stringent techniques for stem-injecting the persistent and destructive Japanese knotweed in key sites. Some volunteers prefer to act alone (eg when taking regular temperature readings while on a dog-walk), others enjoy the company of like-minded individuals when tackling a river improvement together, for example a litter-pick, willow weave or balsam ‘bash’ event. Some have almost no time to offer, others, plenty. Each group is able to harness and coordinate all the help offered through their own River Watch Champion, who liaises directly with the Trust.

Litter Pick at Fish Quay and RW launch

We currently have River Watch groups in Corbridge, Stocksfield, Haydon Bridge, Ebchester, Tyne Green, Haltwhistle, Riding Mill, Ferndene, and the Lower Derwent. We are working to raise funds to launch more groups, both in urban and rural locations.

Good for Business

It’s not only residential communities that come together to look after ‘their’ river. We have had some great days out with groups from local businesses, including teams from Northumbrian Water and Greggs plc. Some businesses have committed at Board level to helping the environment, and individual members of staff often have a say in how this is achieved. ‘Riverfly’ - to check water quality

One of the single biggest indicators of the general health of a river is the state of the invertebrate population. Although we don’t often see the ‘wigglies’ in the river, they are vital for a healthy river food chain and healthy river water should be teeming with river fly larvae (the juvenile stages of invertebrates). A wide range of species, as well as a lot of them, indicates a healthy river system. We run regular ‘Riverfly Partnership’ training courses so that our volunteers train up to work across the catchment to survey and monitor invertebrates – a sudden drop in their numbers or changes in species, may flag up a problem. By using this nationwide monitoring scheme alongside routine monitoring by government agencies, we ensure that water quality is checked more widely and action taken at the earliest opportunity to address any issues.

Win-win

Some of the offers of help that we receive include students who need to do fieldwork / produce a paper as an academic requirement. By working together, we identify the best sites for the most interesting results; this both meets the necessary academic requirements, and, at the same time, really enhances our own knowledge, providing useful river data and analysis. Our project officers are often short of time, and it is really useful to have some regular help back in the office, to deal with the accompanying administration, entering data or helping to file, making even better use of our officers’ time.

Photos

Although we have a large archive of photographs, often these are used to catalogue problems or capture improvement works in progress. If you have taken some good quality photographs of one of the Tyne rivers, we are keen to add to our collection of river photographs at all times of year, so would be delighted to hear from you.

Trustees

We are extremely grateful for the time volunteered by our Trustees, who bring a wide range of experience to the team. Led by our Chairman, Hugo Remnant, our Board is a huge part of our success, providing guidance and strategic direction, helping with fundraising and occasionally getting out on the riverbank to carry out practical work.

Volunteers Officer

One of our frustrations is that we occasionally end up turning away or postponing, some offers of help – simply because we don’t have the initial time to get individuals up and running in the first place. We are therefore currently seeking funding, not only for new and existing River Watch groups; but also for a part-time Volunteers Officer to liaise with our volunteers and to coordinate all volunteer activity.

Thank you

So much has been achieved, with our volunteers’ help. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers, past and present, for all their hard work. If you would like to help Tyne Rivers Trust as a volunteer or donor in any capacity, please contact us on: info@tyneriverstrust.org

Ryton RFC Little Ruggaz

Rytons new fun training sessions for children age 2-6 has been a great success with upwards of 30 children taking to the field on a Sunday morning to take part in a games and skills development. With enthusiastic club members supported by current players the sessions have gone from strength to strength with the children making new friends and taking enjoyment from the game. The sessions begin at 10am on a Sunday morning with tea coffee and bacon sandwiches available from the kitchen, the children recently enjoyed a Halloween disco party and have plans for a Christmas disco with a visit from Santa.

For more info pop into the club or give us a call on 0191 413 6128.

Senior Rugby

Ryton consistently field 3 teams each Saturday, senior training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm. We are always looking for new players of all ages and abilities. Why not come along and take advantage of some of the best facilities in the North East, backed up by experienced qualified coaches and a family friendly comfortable club house.

It’s not just about the rugby….

Ryton have a fantastic club house which is available for hire for any occasion. With baby changing facilities, a fully equipped

kitchen, large screen and overhead projector, in house disco equipment, a huge car park and of course a fully stocked bar. We have always been a popular venue for christenings, birthday parties, anniversaries and live music however with very little activity taking place at the club during the day a recent push for corporate clients wanting to avoid the traffic and parking issues a meeting or conference in the centre of town create, has seen bookings for health and safety and training courses during office hours, something the club are keen to promote and the feedback has been fantastic. With space for around 60 people seated and room for demonstrations or activities and a buffet it’s a great choice

Ryton Market – People Behind the Scenes The Ryton Local Produce Market is about creating a one-stop shopping experience of diverse local produce. Established with both the customer and the trader in mind the premise is simply to bring an abundance of fresh goods to the local area. From uniquely flavoured sausages to freshly baked bread, to the homegrown fruits and veggies available and not forgetting the cakes and pastries for the sweet toothed amongst us, the best traders in the region have been sought to frequent this monthly event. Management of the Ryton Local Produce Market rests with BWtL CIC, a local community interest company and a non-profit organisation linked to Blaydon based literacy charity Bringing Words to Life. BWtL CIC is responsible for a number of projects, including a youth newspaper which is currently being piloted, both online and in print, called b**p. The project began last year, when young people from local schools, including Ryton’s Thorp Academy, were given the opportunity to write for an online blog. Since its inception over 20 young people have volunteered their time to contribute to this publication, by meeting weekly to discuss techniques and story ideas and then submitting stories in their free time. The online aspect was then developed further and b**p went to print in May with another edition due in November. The project, loved by a group of teenagers, who have a passion for writing, has now been running for eleven strong months. Through the management of the Ryton Local Produce market the money generated will allow more young people in Gateshead to become involved in this unique project. “B**P is a huge part of my life, as it gives me the opportunity to become a better writer, through many different experiences,” explains Lauren Hodgson, a writer for the project and sixth form student at Thorp Academy. I’m able to interview upcoming musicians, comedians and more. I’ve developed my writing skills, gained confidence and met some great people along the way. The experience will stay with me forever, and I hope that I’ll always be involved in some way for years to come.” Through projects such as the market and the newspaper, BWtL CIC are engaging with communities and strengthening them at the same time. “We are all about enabling young people and communities to reach their potential,” Melanie J Cornish, founder and project coordinator of BWtL CIC and Bringing Words to Life states. While managing a market is not directly linked to literacy, it does bring communities together and that is one of the basic fundamentals for all the work we do.” Taking place on the final Saturday of every month, with a Christmas Market planned for December 13th, the Ryton market is going from strength to strength. With the support of local people, volunteers and produce such as meat, vegetables, bread, cakes, pies, pastries, cheese and eggs all readily available, the future of this community based project is definitely a bright one. For more information on the market please visit www.rytonmarket.org For trader enquiries and volunteer opportunities please contact Melanie@rytonmarket.org To read the online version of B**P please visit www.NEBeep.com

NEW PATIENTS WELCOME

CLIN NOWIC

OPEN !

What a difference a year makes... In October 2013 our clinic was destroyed by a fire in an adjacent property. We’ve had a difficult year.

Thanks to the support of Rev. Clive Devonshire at the Church of the Holy Spirit; our staff, our patients and our business network we were able to keep going. We’ve listened to our patients and taken the opportunity to re-evaluate our services and to redesign the layout and appearance of the practice.

Roger Clegg Thinking of buying a Camera this Christmas? Christmas is bearing down quickly on us again with the traditional giving and receiving of gifts. Included in the huge variety of presents there will inevitably be a fair number of cameras. I have referred to cameras in my column over the years but have never really written about which type of camera is the best for you? So here goes and I will be concentrating on the type of cameras that most people are likely to use. Starting in order of generally accepted picture quality is the full frame Digital Single Lens Camera (DSLR). This type of camera is the one most likely to be appreciated by the person who regards photography as a serious hobby. It is the most flexible camera which allows you to change the lens giving potential for an enormous variety of subjects. There are many specialised lenses for such interests as wildlife, sport, people, insects, architecture, landscape and so on and so on. As a classification it provides the potential for the best quality pictures – it has the biggest sensor and generally the largest number of pixels or light receptors. The viewfinder sees through the lens and usually uses a system of mirrors / reflecting surfaces allowing you to very accurately see what will be in the picture. Most will allow you to also use the LCD screen on the back of the camera. There is a cost for such flexibility and potentially best quality, and it is size, weight and price. Next is the APS-C range of DSLR cameras. These are interchangeable lens cameras and generally much the same as the DSLR but smaller. The lenses are also smaller. They have the same potential for flexibility but with a smaller sensor. The cost of this smaller sensor is an alleged decrease in quality, but still very good. They can use the DSLR lenses with the appropriate lens mount but the DSLR cannot use their dedicated APS-C lenses. The advantages are smaller, lighter, and cheaper. Continuing to the next type of camera we have the Compact Mirrorless Camera (CMC). These are smaller again (some are very small!). Gone is the system of mirrors to allow you to see through the

lens. It has been replaced by use of the LCD screen on the back of the camera. The more sophisticated ones have traditional viewfinders but work electronically – hence, mirrorless. Despite their small size some are extremely sophisticated cameras with enormous potential and flexibility. Part of the penalty for the convenience of small size is that the sensor is that much smaller again and allegedly with consequent loss of some picture quality. As with the previous types of cameras they have a good range of dedicated interchangeable lenses. My penultimate group are the Compact Cameras. These have a fixed lens that cannot be changed so you must know the range of pictures you want to take before you buy a Compact Camera. Within this limitation these cameras cover the full spectrum of price and quality. Some are very, very small and some are larger with traditional viewfinders. Some are inexpensive and some very expensive. The advantage of this group is compactness – they will generally be smaller than a similarly specified camera in the other three groups. This category contains cameras of hugely varying robustness and picture quality. Perhaps an initial rough guide to quality is price. Finally come Phones and Tablets – brilliant! Convenient, always with us, available at a moment’s notice and much fun. The down side – quality of picture. These camera groups are listed in terms of declining picture quality. This assumes that you expect to get really big prints of your pictures. A few of us do and most don’t. Most people do not have many, or any, pictures printed these days. Most pictures are viewed exclusively on monitors, tablets or phones. If you fall into this group Compact Cameras are the best category to look at first. The camera price and quality is less relevant. Claims that some types of camera give better quality pictures than others again should be looked at in context of how you wish to present your pictures and the potential size of any enlargements you may have printed.

I have a full frame DSLR and a CMC - the DSLR having the superior image quality with the CMC somewhat down the scale. When I recently bought my CMC I took some pictures to see its capability. I got a 3ft wide print made. Was it as good as my DSLR? I don’t know, comparison wasn’t relevant, but what I will say is that picture quality amazed me. I will have no hesitation in putting a 3ft wide print (and bigger) from my CMC into a prestigious gallery where picture quality is paramount. The camera and lens is only one component of a high quality picture - obviously though, the better their quality the better the potential quality of your picture. The other components are your picture taking technique, the quality of the processing of the picture, and the quality of the printing. The picture from a lesser camera can look better than one from an expensive camera if any one of these components under perform with the better camera. Many cameras are sold on the basis that with more pixels you will get a better picture. Less but better pixels can give you better quality than more less efficient pixels. Again, the point made in the previous paragraph also applies. I hope this has clarified some of the mystique surrounding the different types of cameras. I hope you all enjoy your early winter and festive season photography and that many good memories are captured to be enjoyed for years to come.

The Yarn Bombing The yarn bombing is all about raising funds for the children’s charity Spirit of Africa which raises money for our foster care home and preschool in Kwa-Zulu Natal in the valley of a Thousand Hills. The children in foster care, may be with us permanently or for a short stays. The children are aged from 2 years to 16 years. In October 2013 a group of six volunteers from the UK went to South Africa to build a pre-school which now supplies 40 children will their first steps in education. Two of those volunteers are teachers in a Prudhoe First School and have since returned to work with the local teachers we employ. The yarn bombed Thanksgiving trees consist of having crochet squares made by friend’s, family, ladies in South Africa, and local knitting clubs. The crochet squares are then sold to individuals for £5 . The donator can then dedicate their square to a loved one, in memory or in thanksgiving. The dedications have gone into a book which is being kept in Prudhoe Waterworld, which is the building beside the trees that are bombed. Businesses in the area have also bought larger squares to put on to the tree. The location of the trees to be yarn bombed had been kept secret until they were bombed, under cover of darkness, on Saturday night by some of the trustee’s,their friend’s and family. By midnight the six trees were looking spectacular. Donna Southgate, Alan Moore and myself, Carol Tree have been working on the project for 10 months with support from their friend’s and family. Pauline from Ready Steady Knit supplied us with wool and with many crochet squares. Many of the schools in Prudhoe also bought school squares and it has been heart warming to watch school children spot their school squares done in school colours. Many people who have made a dedication were moved to tears when they saw the trees in all their colour.

The trees are being called the Thanksgiving trees. We are hoping to keep them up until the New year. The people of Prudhoe were out in their droves visiting the trees on Sunday and examining the book in which they had made their dedication. People are still able to make a donation to the charity through the website at www.spiritofafrica.org.uk or by contacting Carol on info@ spiritofafrica.org.uk. The charity fund raises through out the year. They have the local Fish restaurant Ball’s booked for a charity fun night on the 5th of December. Tickets available at £20 from Carol.

Ready, Steady... Knit! The clocks have gone back, the leaves are turning on the trees, Autumn is here and the knitting season has well and truly begun. But our customers have not been idle during the summer, oh no, they have been kept very busy with our charity knitting projects. Our hats for the homeless project has been very successful and a couple of weeks ago I was able to take two huge bags of knitted hats scarves and gloves to the Peoples Kitchen in Newcastle for distribution among the homeless and vulnerable people of Newcastle. With the weather getting colder they were very much appreciated and we have received a lovely thank you letter from the staff at the centre. We have also helped the Spirit of Africa children’s charity with their appeal for crocheted squares for their thanksgiving trees. If you are in Prudhoe have a walk past Waterworld and see the colourful trees dressed in colourful crocheted squares. This has helped to raise over £2000 for the work of the Charity supporting HIV and Aids orphans in a foster home and pre school in South Africa. We have lots of lovely new knitting yarns and patterns in the shop to inspire your own projects, start early for Christmas. We have regular knitting and crochet classes as well as the more informal knit and natter sessions. Call in and see us. This month I have a pattern for you for an easy knitted snood to keep you warm through to winter.

You will need - 100g ball of textured chunky yarn such as King Cole Bamboozle - one pair of each 6mm (UK4) and 5mm (UK6) knitting needles.

Method Using 5mm needles cast on 78 stitches Work 4 rows in garter stitch (every row is a knit row) Change to 6mm needles and working in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row) continue until work measures 28cm (11 inches) ending with a wrong side row. Change to 5mm needles and work 3 rows in garter stitch. Cast off knit wise.

To make up Using a matching plain yarn join side edges together and place seam to back. Pin out garment and cover with a damp cloth for 24 hours as this will help define the texture of the yarn. Happy Knitting Love

Walk in Bathrooms Hi I’m Derek Cummings. I have been established in the Tyne Valley for the past 30 years. I specialise in bathrooms including walk in shower rooms for the elderly and have fitted 100’s for many happy customers – references always available.

WALK IN BATHROOMS Trading in the Tyne Valley & Surrounding Area for over 30 years

There are a number of national companies doing the same work promoting themselves with slick advertising campaigns but I am horrified by the quotes customers receive. I am a bit more old school and only charge a fair price for a fair days work. My average cost for a bathroom / walk in shower washroom is around £3500. Many large companies charge around £10,000 for the same work!

These are my work promises to you • I will treat your home with respect, putting down dust sheets and hovering up at the end of each day. • I will treat you, the customer with respect too and never be pushy. Honest and open is my moto. • I will quote a fare price and explain my costs. • I will carry out my work to the highest stands – every tile has its place! • I will help you plan your space for you specific needs. Call me anytime if your thinking of having a bathroom / shower room fitted and I’ll help you from start to finish

Average installation cost £3,500 For a fast and friendly service call Derek on:

Carrying the wealth of the nation – from Allendale to Blaydon

No, not the crown jewels but lead. Lead for roofs of London churches after the great fire; lead for grand houses; lead for pipes and sewers. The rich lead deposits of the North Pennines provided for much of country’s needs in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. And just how that lead was carried long ago is being brought to life through an unusual programme of research, digging, conservation, walking, cycling, drawing, acting and even eating and drinking.

Slaley Commemoration Hall Saturday 8th November, 7pm.

Premiere of ‘Carry on Mining…Ore’ a lighthearted look at the lives and times of the lead industry at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Tickets 01434 673388 £8.50 adult, £5.50 children including a three course meal. Sponsored by the Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project www.dukesfield.org.uk

The catalyst for the whole project was the dangerous state of the Dukesfield Arches near Slaley, now known to be the remains of a huge old lead smelt mill, probably one of the largest in Europe for a century or so. This was where lead ore, mined high in the North Pennines was reduced from large chunks into purer ‘pigs’ of lead for stowing on boats down at Blaydon. The two majestic arches deep in the wood have been an enigma and puzzled passing walkers and cyclists for years. Why were they there? Did they carry a railway, were they some sort of lime-kiln, were they something to do with mining, were they a grand folly? Many local people knew that the Dukesfield Arches were part of an old lead smelt mill and a special part of their local heritage. They also knew that they needed attention. ‘Something needs to be done about the arches’ was a rallying cry at a Hexhamshire Parish Council meeting some three years ago. Local people, led by Anne Porter and Greg Finch, worked with Slaley and Hexhamshire Parish Councils and The Friends of the North Pennines, to prepare an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. The bid was about much more than restoring the arches, it was about the lives and times of the people who worked and carried the lead and the links between the North Pennines and the Tyne. The bid was successful and the Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project was born in 2013. The project is a truly collaborative affair. Down in Blaydon, volunteers have joined the project’s ‘Reading the Past’ group to help transcribe archive material. Volunteers around Blaydon are also helping to research a walk and a cycle-route linking to the lead carrier’s way and an interpretation panel planned for the old refinery site on the Keelman’s Way. Volunteers there are fascinated by finding out more about Blaydon’s links with the lead route. They’ve always known a lot about the links with Derwent Valley iron but this project is opening up new areas of local history. Meanwhile, up in Allendale towards the other end of the carrier’s way, volunteer Jennifer Norderhaug is busily devising a walking route. Local teachers are delighted with the opportunities offered through the project. Youngsters in Allendale, Whitley Chapel and Slaley are playing their part and becoming experts in the lead industry. As well as producing inspiring artwork and spar boxes, some now aspire to being archaeologists and there are alarming reports of at least one mining in his back garden. The heart of the project is the Dukesfield Arches. Volunteers have been happily combating the elements over the last two years working alongside professional archaeologists and the conservation team. As volunteer archaeologist Pete Lee said, ‘Uncovering preserved remains that have been buried for so long is fascinating. Equally addictive is piecing together a coherent story of what those remains show, trying to separate initial construction work from subsequent re-developments and demolition, and linking all of the above to any historical documentation that has been found. Having real archaeologists on hand to guide you in these efforts is a great help; a good learning experience. Many questions still remain to be answered. Midges, damp feet, mud, aching muscles ... but who cares!’

Above Right: BBC weatherman, Paul Mooney, pulls the first pint of ‘Ore’Some Ale

Joining all areas together are initiatives like ‘Ore’Some Ale, brewed by the Hexhamshire brewery, on sale at pubs and promoted by beer mats along the lead route. There’s a locally devised play based on the projects research, ‘Carry on Mining…Ore’ being performed now by David Nixon’s On the Move Theatre. There will be a cycle route and walking routes and a book is planned. The energy and enthusiasm around the project is infectious. As Ian Forbes, Chairman of the Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Steering Group, said, ‘I think we are demonstrating an excellent model here. I’m not aware of many other community heritage projects that have been tackled quite so much “in the round” as this one.’

Gardener’s Cottage Plants Barley Straw – The Miracle Mulch The cooler months of the year can be a good time to catch our breath a bit in the garden. If you like armchair gardening with a magazine or book, planning next year’s borders can be relaxing and enjoyable with the rosy prospect of exciting things to come. My bedside table is piled high with gardening literature and good intent. The trouble is, I all too easily fall asleep before hardly a page is turned! Despite the weather I love to get out there as much as I can, enjoying every minute - even if it’s weeding in the rain! However, I think the days when we are fortunate enough to get a bit of low winter sun to warm our backs whilst working in the crisp still air are an absolute joy to experience and are amongst my favourite type of days. So during the busy summer months I have been planning ahead saving up some projects to do in the garden which I can do without the interference of other gardening maintenance jobs and make the most of every bit of the autumn and winter that I can. Please allow me to tell you a story. Our garden used to be mainly lawn and, lovely though it was, I found myself a slave to the lawnmower at the expense of what I really wanted to do – gardening! So slowly the lawn disappeared as I dug up more and more turf and the flower borders took over. It was backbreaking work and persistent weeds were tiresome to eradicate in the new beds. For a few years now, I have been routinely spreading barley straw around my veg plot on the pathways to keep the weeds down and very well it worked too. In fact so well that I often noticed where it had touched upon the lawn, the grass had completely died back. The divide was very distinct and was like the grass had never been there, even though the straw had only been down a few months. As an experiment, I decided to apply a thick mulch of straw on the grass where my next new bed was going to be. A 4” (10cm) layer was spread from a large round bale I had delivered from our local farmer. £15 for a large round bale dropped over the hedge. Roll it in to position then take off the webbing. The straw can then be unrolled incredibly easily like unfurling a carpet, leaving a very neat, thick, wide layer. A few months later I had my next new bed ready for planting. Stones were placed to form the perimeter of the bed. This was to be my new fruit bed so blackcurrant, redcurrant and gooseberry were planted through what was left of the straw. Amazingly, all the grass and weeds had been destroyed beneath the straw including dandelions, couch grass, creeping buttercup and yarrow. The fruit bushes thrived and gave us (and the birds!) bountiful crops. Applications in other areas have eradicated ground elder. The action of the straw also appears to kill off or inhibit most weed seeds present in the area. My theory on its action is akin to its use in ponds to kill off algae. Tannins and possibly other plant inhibiting chemicals are released in the decomposing process and it may well be that these cause the weeds to succumb. I stress here that barley straw is the only type of straw to use for this purpose. So back to this winter’s projects. For a start, I will be shaping new beds in more straw strewn areas, laying stone edgings and carting in lots of woodchip for my pathways. All this marvellous mulching means we have vast amounts of the gardener’s best friend – the earthworm. Other creatures have enjoyed the straw too, including field mice and voles. In turn this has attracted their predators such as weasels, owls and other birds of prey. In effect, wildlife corridors have been created and with the attracting qualities

46

of the additional planting for pollinating insects and many other invertebrates, the bio diversity in the garden has rocketed! Furthermore, the moles don’t bother me anymore because they have no grass to spoil and their annoying earthworks tend to stay under the mulches. Marvellous! I can’t wait to get planting in the spring where my new borders will at last be free from weeds and their seeds. These borders and paths will really become low maintenance with the continued application of a good mulch about once a year. So whatever projects or jobs you plan and carry out, make the most of the weather when you can and enjoy the special atmosphere that the autumn and winter garden brings.

The Floppy Infant Many times have I had parents bring their youngsters in to see me, concerned with aspects of their babies/toddlers development having been told by their medical primary care givers that they should sit tight and simply ‘watch and wait’ to see how their development unfolds. As a parent myself to three children I understand the worry parents have about their little ones reaching developmental milestones, or not reaching them as the case may be. Not reaching developmental milestones is an indicator that something might be wrong, and to ignore it and adopt the ‘watch and wait’ approach might be truly detrimental to the long -term development of that child both cognitively and physically. One condition I would like highlight as an example here is Benign Congenital Hypotonia (BCH) or simply hypotonia, otherwise known as the ‘floppy infant’. Whilst the name suggests the condition is benign, it is very misleading as BCH is anything but benign. This is a non progressive muscle disorder that is present at birth and early recognition and appropriate management is vitally important for the future welfare and development of the child. BCH may affect many areas of a child’s life and lead to developmental delays. Children with BCH exhibit varying degrees of decreased muscle tone and do not reach various developmental milestones at which point parents might be prompted to seek help.

My youngest daughter suffered with BCH/ hypotonia and significant hypermobility, which I first noticed at a very young age. When lifting her up under the armpits the lack of shoulder tone was so bad she would almost slip right through our hands. Her head control was also poor and she wouldn’t stand and bounce on my knees. Holding her up in the air and her limbs would just dangle straight down. As 9 months approached there were no signs of crawling, I decided to get a second opinion (it is extremely difficult to be totally objective about your own child!) and medically, the approach to my daughters problem was to simply ‘watch and wait’ with a view to pursuing further investigations to check for possible muscular dystrophy pending a continued lack of development. I really wasn’t keen to put her through that so taking matters into my hands I put my daughter through a protocol that involved regular specific chiropractic cranial work and exercises to stimulate brain function, and in particular the vestibulo-cerebellar system which is responsible for processing sensory information to the higher centres of the brain which is then responsible for eliciting motor responses. After a relatively short space of time, my daughter started to crawl and now I have difficulty stopping her running everywhere. Being akin to a little mountain goat her balance is incredible. Her development since we started her specific chiropractic protocol has been exponential both physically and mentally. Hypotonia is a very common and often undiagnosed condition, but some of the red flags for BCH might include the following: 1. Floppy infant – your baby should demonstrate ‘flexor tone’, such as arms and legs slightly bent, not just flopping out straight. 2.

Poor head control - when you pull the baby into a sitting position, by 8-10 weeks they should be able to keep their head in line with their spine, and eventually keep some bend in the elbows when performing the ‘pull to sit’ test.

7. Hyper-mobility – increased mobility in joints and ‘doughy’ muscles 8. ‘Sitting on air’ posture when lowered onto a hard surface or reluctance to bear weight on their legs. 9.

Delayed cognitive development due to the limited ability of the child to explore their surroundings – the child may compensate with self stimulation activities such as head banging.

If you suspect your infant or child is not reaching developmental milestones or is exhibiting any of the above signs, it is essential you get help for them as soon as possible. At Family Chiropractic we see many babies and children as we are so passionate about children reaching their maximum potential. If you would like your baby or child to be thoroughly assessed, neurologically and physically, we offer ‘Free Kids Checks’ to see if we can help. You can call us on 01434 605688, we would love to see you.

3. Weak shoulder girdle – when to lift your baby up underneath their arms, they feel as though they will slip through your fingers. 4. Poor trunk tone – you baby sits in C shape (collapsed forward) 5.

Abnormal or late motor milestones - such as lack of rolling, not cross crawling (instead might be bum shuffling or adopting some other variation of getting around), late walking.

6. Feeding/sucking issues – you persist with soft feeds for longer due to chewing issues; the baby may be holding saliva in their mouth for a long time and/ or drool food and saliva from the mouth (this may persist in school aged children).
