It is your journey, make the most of it

T

his year my life took an unexpected turn, literally. Instead of enjoying the city

lights, traveling on my old familiar highway and indulging in all the comforts the city has to offer, life happened, and here I am confined to the imaginary boundaries of country life. Single lanes, pothole ridden, sometimes even gravel roads. Where the

lights are few but the stars are oh so bright. Perhaps someone else decided differently and I was rerouted into the unknown which turned out to be the biggest blessing. People in small towns still chat to one another, they are genuine and kind and care enough to stop whatever it is they’re doing to say hello.

Small towns are not build for comfort but it is what you make of it, it is the journey through this unfamiliar part in all our lives that gives us character, makes us tougher or thougher-er (like a Toyota Hilux).

What a privilege to be part of the TWK Radius team! Enjoy the journey with us. Merry Christmas and may you be blessed in abundance in 2019.

Hy noem dit die ‘Sharpen the Saw’ gewoonte. Bestee tyd met jou Skepper, raak stil by Hom, beleef Hom in jou.

2018 Eddie Fivaz : CFO // Financial Director The 2018 financial year was an exciting year, full of reporting challenges due to new IFRS standards and requirements to ensure that our financial statements truly reflect the operations of the TWK Group. The main objective of the reporting function is to ensure that financial performance is reported timely and in the most usable formats. During the financial year our management reporting and financial reporting platform was integrated to allow for monthly consolidated reporting based on IFRS, allowing management to consider accounting requirements as it would be in the annual financial statements to be prepared in line with Zar-X reporting timeframes and this has also reduced monthly reporting times, ensuring that financial results are available timeously. Once again, the quality of financial reporting has proven that there is synergy between the reporting and operational functions of the group and that there is a capable and willing team to uphold the standard as the group continues to grow and diversify. Lukas Coetzer // Chief Executive Manager: Trade Compared to the previous year, the Trade Division of TWK was blessed with an overall good year during 2018 as far as turnover and profits were concerned even though trading conditions varied in the different areas where TWK Trade operates. During the past year the Umlaas Road blending facility in KZN was completed, while several of the five Constantia Kunsmis blending facilities were upgraded to improve quality and production capacities. During this period TWK Trade also increased their shareholding in Gromor Pty Ltd, the manufacturer of organic and fertiliser products. Special attention was also given to optimise operations by closing down non profitable operations and to restructure some operations to improve profitability and service to our customers. The appointment of key personnel was done during the past year to enhance service to our customers. The Trade Division of TWK is well positioned to ensure an acceptable return for shareholders going forward. We are excited to see what 2019 will have to offer!

Tinus Potgieter // Executive Manager: Business Development / Group Company Secretary 2018 was a year in which TWK share prices again reached record heights. The TWK Agriculture Holdings (Pty) Ltd. share price increased from R34-00 per share in January 2018 to a level of R36-00 per share by 09 November 2018. The TWK Investments Ltd. share price increased from R14-55 in January to 2018 to a level of R18-20 per share by 09 November 2018.

Any investor or client that received an allocation of shares through the TWK Loyalty Scheme have realized an excellent return during the last few years. As a company with multiple sources of income, a strong underlying asset profile and an excellent history of financial performance, we are looking forward to unlock more value for our shareholders in the coming years. For more information on how to invest visit the TWK website, or send an email to invest@twkagri.com Ferdie Brauckmann // Chief Executive Manager: Timber The Timber Division, once again, did exceptionally well during 2018 to obtain and supply sustainable, quality processed and unprocessed timber products to a growing global demand. In the current climate where South Africa is approaching the limits of increasing productivity from a declining natural resource base, coupled with the restrictions on licenses for plantations, we understand the importance of effective business practices, constantly searching for new opportunities and striving towards enhancing and developing stakeholder relationships. A big thank you to all our dedicated and competent staff for their hard work and to our suppliers, clients and producers for making TWK their market of choice! We wish everyone a blessed festive season and look forward to improve our product offerings even further in 2019.

2019-Mindset

and opportunity

Theo Vorster // CEO: Galileo Capital

W

e have short memories – one year ago as 2017 gave way to 2018, our President was Jacob Zuma, with the Gupta point man Mosebenzi Zwane as our Minister in charge of Mining, the institutionally discredited Malusi Gigaba was minister of Finance, a compromised Lynne Brown was minister of state-owned entities and David

Mahlobo was minister of State Security or as Max du Preez refers to him as “Zuma’s Rottweiler”! What we hear now in the Zondo commission on State capture is a history lesson and to a large extent justifies what some of our investigative journalists have been saying for the best part of the past 5 years. When it comes to investments and investment decisions, it is all about the future and how to position oneself for the future – without falling in the trap of believing we are good at making predictions, we are actually poor at predicting, and any long-term decision based purely on our presumptuous ability to predict the future will most likely end in tears! As I look forward to 2019, I want to highlight two points to consider – one is a mindset and the second is an opportunity of a decade. In terms of the mindset – we need to make a mind shift and view ourselves as global citizens and approach investment decisions from a global citizen mind set. South Africa is less than 0,5% of the World’s GDP and to put the total value of all the companies on the JSE’s All Share Index into perspective – Apple, Microsoft and Amazon combined are worth more than twice the value of all our companies combined! The underlying reasons for investing offshore is to diversify one’s risk

country, diversify sources of growth and revenue within the investment portfolio and to gain access to world class assets not listed or available

The graph on right illustrates the Rand vs Dollar exchange rate over the past 10 years (red line) compared the difference in inflation between South Africa and the USA (blue line) over the same period. One can extend the period to 30 or 40 years, the Rand US Dollar exchange rate always revert to the channel between the two pink lines (one standard deviation).

19

TWK RADIUS The emotional decision is to take out money when the exchange rate is above the top pink line (like in late 2015 early 2016 when Zuma fired Nene as Finance and replaced him Des van Rooyen for a weekend, before firing Des and replacing him with Pravin and so on) when the Rand was trading at levels of weaker that R15 and even R16 to the USD. The rational decision would be to first accept the need for portfolio diversification, start the diversification process at level closer to R13,50 to the USD and then to continue it over a period of time – say in 3 tranches over an 18-month period! Opportunity of a decade – every 10 or 20 years the equity market presents investors with the opportunity to buy quality assets at deeply discounted prices. The companies operating and listed primarily in South Africa are currently trading at these, once in a decade, attractive valuation. Part of the decimation of the South African economic prospects was the mismanagement of the economy for the best part of the past decade. With the advent of an improved political outlook and the real prospect of improving business confidence, the underperforming South African Inc companies are set to do well. There has always been a close correlation going back decades between the economic growth of South Africa and the economic growth of the rest of the world. This correlation broke in the past 8 years. Post the 2008 financial

had jobs! The opportunity lies in the fact that the SA Inc companies are trading at extremely favourable valuations. Some of the companies that one would include in such an opportunistic portfolio would include Standard Bank, Reunert, Imperial and Stefanutti Stocks to name but a few. If we analyse a portfolio of these SA Inc companies, one can comfortably say that such a portfolio is trading at less than half of fair value – this implies that to get back to long-term fair value, an investment in such a portfolio now could double in value in the next two to three years as confidence returns to the South African economy and we start looking past the disaster of the Zuma presidency years. So – if you believe South Africa will normalize under a new administration and confidence in the local economy will return, you have the once in a decade opportunity to buy great companies at half-price! I want to emphasize that this does not imply that you ignore international diversification as part of your long-term strategy, but for those with a bit more risk appetite – there is currently a great local opportunity!

Soil Scientists were employed to carry out soil surveys to determine which tree species were best suited to which soils, with a view to obtain optimum yield from each site. This method was to be employed on all of the farms which TWK purchased, including Wyntoun and Bonnie Braes in the Lothair area. The purchase of Shiselweni Forestry Company in the south of Swaziland followed. In

For this reason TWK embarked on a project to establish Timber Holding Depots which could absorb high volumes of wattle timber during the “wattle season” and then release these timber stocks into the market place rateably throughout the year. This was one of my big responsibilities as I was personally responsible for the laying out of these depots and the placing of the timber stacks, as well as the control of the quality of the timber being received into the depots. Stock control and administration was also my responsibility. The depots were established in the following places and order:

It was while being involved with these organisations that I had the privilege to meet many of the giants of the South African Forestry and Timber Industry, people who made a huge impression on my life in forestry. Apart from the people that I have met and all of the things I have learnt during my time at TWK, I must also say how fortunate I was to have been able to work in the outdoors, in God’s beautiful creation, in some of the most awesome rural areas of this beautiful country. One of the first things that I ever learnt as a child was that “Time and tide wait for no man”. Now that the time has come for me to retire from my working career in forestry, and after 34 years at TWK, I look back on a life filled with adventure, excitement, challenges,

Dis immers skoolvakansie! Maar Basjan sit kliphard en planne maak. Strepies is verveeld. Hy knibbel aan Basjan se oor. “Eina! Nee, Strepies!” raas Basjan. Strepies is ’n gebande muishond. Hy volg Basjan soos ’n skaduwee, oral waar hy gaan. “Basjan!” roep ’n stem. “Is jy daar bo?” roep ’n ander stem. Strepies kwetter opgewonde. Hy ken daardie stemme baie goed!

“Hallo, Nandi! Hallo, Neville!” roep Basjan. “Ja, ek is hier. “Eina, man, jy trap op my vingers!” raas Nandi. “Dis oor jy so stadig is.

“Jou mond is mos groter as ’n kwêvoël s’n!”

“Hierdie is van my af,” sê Basjan trots. Jou spaarvarkie is mos altyd leeg.” “Nou is ek lekker nuuskierig!” sê Basjan se ma. 57

TWK RADIUS

Almal skeur hulle geskenke oop. Basjan hou hulle gesigte dop. Strepies is ook nuuskierig. Hy skarrel rond en loer in almal se pakkies. Karlien se pakkie is eerste oop. “Dis ’n Kersboom-in-’n-boks,” sê Basjan trots. Regte egte, lewende Kersbome is baie meer pret!

Hoe werk denneboom-bestellings? Die boer plaas ‘n bestelling by TWK kwekery.

Why is it important to keep your business up to date with

Whether you want to deliver outstanding service, boost you image, beat opponents or streamline everyday business dealings, keeping up to date with technological advances are crucial for success. In today’s day and age, it is practically impossible to avoid technology. Sometimes we forget how integrated we live with technology every day. It may be the card machine you use to make purchases, your smartphone, computer, tablet or laptop, it is constantly evolving and it is becoming more essential to stay on trend and in touch with new innovations to make your organisation more efficient and ahead of your competitors. Service With technology like social media and other electronic communications platforms you can know who your customers are (more capably) and what it is that they need, with less need for paperwork and faster interactions on service. With so many competitors out there doing the same thing, service is what’s going to set you apart, using technology like free Wi-Fi hot spots will not only make a customer feel welcome and encourage others to make use of your service, but also increase your business prospects. Security As threats like viruses and cyber-attacks are also evolving and becoming more advanced technology wise, it is important to keep your systems up to date. Having the latest software and bug fixes installed will keep those threats at bay with built in security structures. Information like your customers, shareholders and business financial situations needs to be kept secure, investing in current security software will put you and your clients at ease. Technology is also becoming increasingly mobile, it is much easier to make backups to be stored off site in the event of a treat taking place.

Cost Effective Although it might be costly at first to invest in technology, it will be worth it in the long run. Streamlining your organisation will increase your productivity and efficiency, giving you and your workforce more time to concentrate on the quality of service and products. Missing opportunities because of a lack of communication or information is history. Keeping your technological tools like printers up to date, will save costs on consumables, like ink, paper and power usage, this will be much more sustainable for your business and the environment.

tech savvy and innovative and put your business in a positive light as most individuals these days do a lot of research online before committing to a purchase or investment. So don’t resist technological progress, don’t be a victim to disorganisation, obscurity, missed opportunities and don’t become irrelevant. Stay up to date with your technological operations and in turn you will stay in line with the modern consumer and in front of your competitors leaving them in your dust. ■

Marketing and Image Communicating with potential customers is much easier with the latest technology, be it via email, SMS, social media or having a website. This is where you can portray your organisation’s image, what your vision an missions are, having an easily accessible and navigable website will immediately show the customers that you are

MY SMART LIFE Desirè du Plessis

BE ‘MONEY WISE’ BUDGET FOR YOUR FUTURE START AND END THE YEAR AHEAD AND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IN THE BLACK

There is nothing more satisfying than receiving an alert from your bank that your paycheck has been deposited. You feel invigorated and ready for life! But it is a feeling that quickly disappears once you start seeing debit order after debit order eating away at your balance – and by mid-month, after having lived it up a bit, you start wondering where it all has disappeared to. How are you going to survive the rest of the month!

SOUNDS FAMILIAR? Few of us hava had jobs that pay us salaries big enough to have endless piles of money laying around, so we must be smart about the money we have. That means planning and thinking about the now and the future and how we spend our money.

WHY SHOULD I BUDGET? Tempting as it might be to run your finances in your head and on good intentions, chances are you will lose track quickly of what you have spent (or may still need to spend) your money on. Financial experts agree that a budget is the single most effective tool to take control of your finances and in understanding where all your money is going. With a budget you can stick to, you will know where you are spending too much or too little and can move your money around accordingly. A well-executed budget is a great tool to help you save and build your wealth. It shows you where to cut costs, and how to save and better understand your money – and the better you understand your money, the easier it is to control and grow for your future.

THE STEP-BY-STEP BUDGET PLAN The goal is to spend less money than you make. Spending more money than you make will force you to generate debt (payday loans, overextended credit cards) just to survive. That will quickly lead to even more debt to pay off old debt, trapping you for years as you try to repay what you owe, while trying to live the life you are longing for. Focus your energy on creating a balanced budget by following the step-by-step budget plan:

APPS TO HELP YOU MANAGE YOUR MONEY - www.22seven.com Free budgeting and investment app - www.moneysmart.co.za Free money and spending app - www.myfinanciallife.co.za

STEP 1: LOOK AT HOW MUCH MONEY YOU EARN Look carefully at your payslip so that you know your net salary. Your net salary is your gross salary minus deductions (income tax, medical aid and pension). Add on any other forms of income you might have. Perhaps you have a side-job? Investment income? And don’t forget to add your partner’s income. If you’re a freelancer or self-employed, your income will fluctuate from month to month. Figure out your monthly average income.

STEP 2: TRACK YOUR SPENDING Pay attention to every cent you spend. This is an essential step to get your head around your spending habits, and to pick up where the numbers are totally out of whack. Simplify the process by paying all your bills online and the rest of your purchases with a debit or credit card. Sync your accounts with a finance tracking app such as moneysmart.co.za that will automatically track and report your spending for you. Or you can do it the old-fashioned way with a notepad, receipts and your debit- and credit-card statements.

examples would be entertainment, eating out, clothing, electricity (perhaps you use more in winter), etc. Irregular expenses only happen every now and then and here you include anticipated holiday expenses, emergency expenses, vet bills, gifts, etc.

Now that you have a clear understanding of your monthly income and expenses, you build your budget. The easiest approach is to use an online budget planner such as 22seven.com. You can also create an Excel spreadsheet

The fact that you have started a budget means you are taking control of your finances. It is time to start revising your spending.

BUT, IF IT IS NOT A PRETTY PICURE, DON’T PANIC

SMALL EXPENSES (THAT YOU HARDLY NOTICE) ARE COSTLIER THAN YOU MIGHT THINK Get rid of subscriptions you never use.

Eat out one or two times less a month? Do you make phone calls when a text or via social messenger will do? Can you make your morning coffee at home rather than buying a cappuccino every morning? Do you need a pair of new shoes every month? Really?

STEP 7: FOCUS ON SMALL DAILY DECISIONS The silver lining is that financial responsibility begins with the small daily decisions you make as you walk through life, whether it’s while shopping for groceries or buying airplane tickets for your family trip. Approach your budget by being realistic, flexible and honest. Cut back and trim rather than going cold turkey. And make sure to work in some fun!

STEP 6: START TINKERING

wants and look for any unnecessary expenses you can cut. Are you living beyond your means?

THE 50 / 20 / 30 A BUDGET FORMULA THAT WORKS If you are new to budgeting, figuring out how to manage your money and deciding how to split your budget can feel overwhelming. The good news is that the 50/20/30 rule helps you to build a budget by creating a balance between obligations and goals - while allowing you to splurge!

THE 50 WHAT IS INCLUDED? The 50 means 50 percent of your income (amount after deductions). You allocate living expenses and essentials to this category: rent, mortgage, car payments, utilities, groceries (but not eating out), basic clothing, gym memberships (because you’ve committed to paying them monthly), child care, etc.

THE 20 WHAT IS INCLUDED? This number is all about the future and how you’re going to gain financial traction. Twenty percent of your income should go to financial goals, meaning your savings, investments, and debt reduction payments. This category is invaluable because as you pay off your existing debt it will drop your necessities percentage even lower, which will free up more money for your wants and investments.

The trick is in keeping this number down to 50 percent (if you are trying to make more room in your budget, the 50 can be a great place to trim). You need to make smart decisions about what you can afford, for instance when buying a house, you can quickly get lost in the process. When a bank says you’re approved for a loan, that’s what the banks have determined is the largest amount of debt you can take on with a reasonable chance of paying it back. This maximises the bank’s bottom line, not your finances. Be attentive to your own best interest and make sure what you take on fits within the 50.

THE 30 WHAT IS INCLUDED? This number is all about the future and how you’re going to gain financial traction. Twenty percent of your income should go to financial goals, meaning your savings, investments, and debt reduction payments. This category is invaluable because as you pay off your existing debt it will drop your necessities percentage even lower, which will free up more money for your wants and investments.

WHY IT WOKRS With the 50/20/30 budget you’ll make progress toward your financial goals without feeling deprived. Instead of feeling stressed when you look at the upcoming month’s budget, you will feel excited.

They mentioned the idea to Christo, who was not keen on such an extravagant gesture. But the Mooi River community and the Farmers Association decided to go ahead and together with a little help raised the total amount needed. An event was held on August 28, 2018 to thank the community of Mooi River for their generosity and to officially hand over the new wheelchair to Christo.

Vars blomme is ‘n moet! ‘n Alternatief is ‘n aparte opskeptafel.

TWK RADIUS

Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is tell my wife that I love her. You might say that she should know that by now, after more than 40 years of being together, but she still likes to hear it. And when your tractor driver has done a good job preparing the land, he’ll appreciate a “thank you”. It doesn’t matter he’s doing what he gets paid for, encouragement means so much! Psalm 119 says: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” What keeps me going is the encouragement that I get from the Lord. Encouragement like we see in 1 John 19, which says that if we confess our sins, then He will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In other words, there’s always hope if we keep our eyes on the Lord. Jesus never gave up on those who were failures in the sight of the world. In the Bible, there’s Mary Magdalene, a former prostitute, Matthew, a tax collector who was stealing from his own people, and many others. Jesus groomed them, encouraged them and turned them into giants of the faith. And when He called Peter to walk on water, and Peter lost his confidence, Jesus didn’t rebuke him. Instead, He stretched out His hand and helped Peter. The Lord turns us inside out and makes us into successes. So, my dear friends, let us encourage one another all the time. It costs nothing to say, “Well done! You did a good job!” Encouragement is worth more than gold. We need to put negativity behind us – especially those

harsh words that might have been spoken to us when we were young and have haunted us ever since. I’m not saying for a minute that we should tell lies, but we must choose to see the best in everything, especially in our beloved South Africa. We have to be able to say, “The best is yet to come.” We must extend grace to people just like Jesus extended grace – undeserved love and kindness – to us. Thinking back to my early days of farming, I shudder at the mistakes I made, the amount of money I must have cost my employers, yet they always gave me another chance. If we have no patience with our workers, they’ll never amount to anything and it will actually be our fault. And if your children make a mistake and sincerely apologies, give them another chance. Why? Because that’s what Jesus said. Never miss an opportunity to be kind and encouraging. You’ll soon see how treating strangers – from shop assistants and waitresses to bank tellers and government bureaucrats – to a smile and a compliment will invariably work wonders, especially if the person is clearly having a bad day. God bless Angus Buchan
